Abstract Background The prostaglandin E1 analog “misoprostol” is a drug that has powerful ecbolic effects and can be beneficial in the prevention and treatment of postpartum hemorrhage, which is the leading cause of maternal mortality worldwide. Objectives To assess the value of adding intrauterine misoprostol together with intravenous oxytocin injection compared with sublingual misoprostol together with intravenous oxytocin injection during elective cesarean section to reduce blood loss intraoperatively and prevent postpartum hemorrhage. Methods A total of 192 pregnant women were counseled and recruited from the labor and delivery unit at Kasr Al Aini Hospital, Cairo University, and equally randomized into two groups. Group (A) included 96 women who received intrauterine misoprostol (400 mg) + oxytocin. Group (B) included 96 women who received sublingual misoprostol (400 mg) + oxytocin. The primary outcome of our study was estimation of the amount of blood loss during and after cesarean delivery. The secondary outcomes were the incidence of PPH within the first 6 h after labor, the need for blood transfusion, the need for any supplementary ecbolic drugs, the need for additional surgical intervention for PPH, changes in hematocrit and hemoglobin in both groups after delivery, and the incidence of side effects of the study medications. Results We observed a significant discrepancy between the two groups in terms of postoperative Hb and Hct, postoperative differences (pre- and post-Hb and post-Hct) and EBL favoring the intrauterine group. However, no significant difference was observed between the groups with respect to excessive blood loss > 1000 ml in the 1st six hours, the need for supplementary ecbolics, the necessity for blood or blood prod, the need for additional surgical intervention (for PPH) or side effects. Conclusion Intrauterine misoprostol combined with oxytocin intravenous infusion is more effective than sublingual misoprostol combined with oxytocin intravenous infusion in lowering intraoperative blood loss and preventing postpartum hemorrhage in elective cesarean section. Subsequently, within the current consider, the viability of post calving tonic (PCT) was assessed in vivo for the treatment of post calving complications in dairy cattle. Materials and Methods: The placentas of 10 chosen post-calved dairy animals with a history of postpartum complications primarily held placentas were drenched with PCT 250 ml twice a day for 2 successive days. The evaluation parameters, viz., time taken for removal of lochia, placenta, involution of the uterus and estrus come back time, body condition score, and milk yield have been analyzed to assess the efficacy of PCT in post calved dairy bovines. Results: The results depicted that following the administration of PCT, the mean time taken for expulsion of uterine discharge (lochia), placenta, time taken for the involution of the uterus, and estrus come back time was 86 and 10 h, 30 and 36 days, respectively. Additionally, the administration of PCT 250 ml twice daily for 2 consecutive days to the post-calved dairy cows caused a significant increase (p < 0.05) in milk yield. Conclusion: It was apparent that PCT encourages the unconstrained removal of held placenta through its ecbolic movement and advances uterine discharge exercises. The study was conducted on dystocia affected eighteen Dangi cows to investigate effect of different ecbolic therapies at calving on postpartum blood metabolic profile and proteinogram. Group-I (T1) and Group-II (T2) cows were injected intramuscularly with methyl-ergometrine (5mg) and dinoprost tromethamine (25 mg), respectively, immediately after parturition. Group-III (T3) cows received herbal ecbolic boli Exapar @ 2-4 boli, bid, PO for first 10 days postpartum. The mean plasma glucose levels were found significantly higher (P<0.05) on the day of calving and then declining up to 28th day postpartum. The mean serum total cholesterol levels in all treatment groups differed nonsignificantly with an increasing trend. The serum total protein concentrations fluctuated either significantly or nonsignificantly between various days of postpartum. The mean serum albumin concentration in T1 and T2 groups were decreased non-significantly (P?0.05) and in T3 group decreased significantly (P<0.05) at 7th day postpartum and thereafter linearly increased with a significant difference at 28th day postpartum. The mean serum globulin concentration in T1 and T3 groups decreased significantly (P<0.05) and in T2 group decreased non-significantly (P?0.05) at 7th day postpartum and thereafter linearly increased with significantly higher value at 28th day postpartum. The albumin globulin ratio fluctuated non-significantly (P?0.05) between different days/ intervals in all the treatment groups in Dangi cows and significantly (P<0.05) higher ratio was found on the 7th day postpartum in treatment T3. The study was conducted in eighteen dystocia affected Dangi cows that were handled without any complications from various villages of Dangs district in South Gujarat to evaluate the effect of different ecbolic therapies on serum macro-micro minerals profile. The cows were divided in to three groups consisting six cows in each. Group-I (T1) and II (T2) cows were given methylergometrine (Nexbolic, 5 mg) and dinoprost tromethamine (Lutalyse, 25 mg) i/m, respectively, soon after parturition. The cows in Group-III (T3) received herbal ecbolic (Exapar, 2-4 boluses, b.i.d.) for first 10 days postpartum. The jugular blood samples were collected aseptically on day 0 (day of calving), 7th, 14th 21st and 28th day postpartum to harvest serum. The serum macro-minerals (calcium, inorganic phosphorus, magnesium) and micro-minerals (copper, cobalt, zinc, iron, manganese) were analyzed using commercially available kits. The mean serum calcium level of Dangi cows did not differ significantly (p>0.05) between T1, T2 and T3. The serum calcium levels showed increasing trend from day 0 to 28th day postpartum and significantly higher (p<0.05) calcium levels were observed on 28th day postpartum. The serum inorganic phosphorus and magnesium levels did not differ significantly (p>0.05) at 0 day, 7th, 14th, 21st and 28th day postpartum within and between all the treatment groups including overall mean at different time intervals. The mean copper, cobalt, zinc, iron and manganese concentrations in treatment T1, T2 and T3 groups did not differ significantly (p>0.05) at different time intervals among all the treatment groups. Cross bred cows with the history of retained placenta (n=5), endometritis (n=5) and two of postpartum anestrus (n=2), were presented at Veterinary Hospital, Darang, (H.P.), India. The animals were treated with the polyherbal uterine tonic, restorative and ecbolic coded product AV/UTL/17. 83.33% recovery was recorded in this case study which reveals that the administration of herbal uterine tonic preparation is helpful in the treatment of reproductive disorders viz. retained placenta, post partum anestrus and endometritis in cows. A mare was presented with anamnesis of failing to expel foetal membrane after eight hours following normal foaling and gestation length. Clinical examination revealed terry colour shreds of foetal membrane hanging from ventral vulval lips. Mare was treated by traditional method of manual removal of placenta since therapeutic management failed to expel it. Mare recovered after routine care for five days uneventfully.
