Higher-order notions of Kreweras complementation have appeared in the literature in the works of Krawczyk, Speicher, Mastnak, Nica, Arizmendi, Vargas, and others. While the theory has been developed primarily for specific applications in free probability, it also possesses an elegant, purely combinatorial core that is of independent interest. The present article aims at offering a simple account of various aspects of higher-order Kreweras complementation on the basis of elementary arithmetic, (co)algebraic, categorical and simplicial properties of noncrossing partitions. The main idea is to see noncrossing partitions as providing an interesting noncommutative analogue of the interplay between the divisibility poset and the multiplicative monoid of positive integers. Just as the divisibility poset can be regarded as the decalage of the multiplicative monoid, we exhibit the lattice of noncrossing partitions as the decalage of a partial monoid structure on noncrossing partitions encoding higher-order Kreweras complements. In the last decade, the concept of path signature has found great success in data science applications, where it provides features describing the path. This is partly explained by the fact that it is possible to compute the signature of a path in linear time, owing to a dynamic programming principle, based on Chen's identity. The path signature can be regarded as a specific example of product or time-/path-ordered integral. In other words, it can be seen as a 1-parameter object build on iterated integrals over a path. Increasing the number of parameters by one, which amounts to considering iterated integrals over surfaces, is more complicated. An observation that is familiar in the context of higher gauge theory where multiparameter iterated integrals play an important role. The 2-parameter case is naturally related to a non-commutative version of Stokes' theorem, which is understood to be fundamentally linked to the concept of crossed modules of groups. Indeed, crossed modules with non-trivial kernel of the feedback map permit to compute features of a surface that go beyond what can be expressed by computing line integrals along the boundary of a surface. A good candidate for the crossed analog of free Lie algebra then seems to be a certain free crossed module over it. Building on work by Kapranov, we study the analog to the classical path signature taking values in such a free crossed module of Lie algebra. In particular, we provide a Magnus-type expression for the logarithm of surface signature as well as a sewing lemma for the crossed module setting.

Over the past decade, the importance of the 1D signature which can be seen as a functional defined along a path, has been pivotal in both path-wise stochastic calculus and the analysis of time series data. By considering an image as a two-parameter function that takes values in a $d$-dimensional space, we introduce an extension of the path signature to images. We address numerous challenges associated with this extension and demonstrate that the 2D signature satisfies a version of Chen's relation in addition to a shuffle-type product. Furthermore, we show that specific variations of the 2D signature can be recursively defined, thereby satisfying an integral-type equation. We analyze the properties of the proposed signature, such as continuity, invariance to stretching, translation and rotation of the underlying image. We investigate the algebraic structure underlying Voiculescu's S-transform in the setting of operator-valued free probability. We show that its twisted factorisation property gives rise to post-groups, crossed morphisms, as well as pre- and post-Lie algebras.

We propose a novel way to describe numerical methods for ordinary differential equations via the notion of multi-indice. The main idea is to replace rooted trees in Butcher's B-series by multi-indices. The latter were introduced recently in the context of describing solutions of singular stochastic partial differential equations. The combinatorial shift away from rooted trees allows for a compressed description of numerical schemes. The Magnus expansion, introduced by Wilhelm Magnus in 1954, is an infinite Lie series employed to express solutions for first-order homogeneous linear differential equations involving a linear operator. Since its discovery it has evolved into a pivotal tool used across diverse disciplines, including physics, chemistry, and engineering. In this work we study conditional monotone cumulants and additive convolution in the shuffle-algebraic approach to non-commutative probability. We describe c-monotone cumulants as an infinitesimal character and identify the c-monotone additive convolution as an associative operation in the set of pairs of characters in the dual of a double tensor Hopf algebra. In this algebraic framework, we understand previous results on c-monotone cumulants and prove a combinatorial formula that relates c-free and c-monotone cumulants. We also identify the notion of $t$-Boolean cumulants in the shuffle-algebraic approach and introduce the corresponding notion of $t$-monotone cumulants as a particular case of c-monotone cumulants., Comment: 27 pages

The main objective of this work is to show that the single-input, single-output (SISO) affine feedback group, a transformation group in the context of the affine feedback interconnection of Chen-Fliess series, is a post-group in the sense of Bai, Guo, Sheng and Tang.

After providing a short review on the recently introduced notion of post-group by Bai, Guo, Sheng and Tang, we exhibit post-group counterparts of important post-Lie algebras in the literature, including the infinite-dimensional post-Lie algebra of Lie group integrators. We survey the Munthe-Kaas--Wright Hopf algebra defined on planar rooted trees. This algebra serves a role akin to that of the Butcher--Connes--Kreimer Hopf algebra on non-planar rooted trees within the domain of numerical methods for ordinary differential equations. In the course of our presentation, we revisit Foissy's work on finite-dimensional comodules over the Butcher--Connes--Kreimer Hopf algebra and expand on his findings to include the Munthe-Kaas--Wright Hopf algebra. This involves detailing its endomorphisms and recursively constructing its primitive elements. These results are applied within the context of rough paths, where we describe an isomorphism between planarly branched and geometric rough paths. Our approach hinges on the extension of the Guin--Oudom construction to post-Lie algebras. In the case of the free post-Lie algebra defined on planar rooted trees, it yields the dual of the Munthe-Kaas--Wright Hopf algebra. Surprisingly, we uncover a natural connection between the concept of bialgebras in cointeraction and the Guin--Oudom construction. Prompted by the rough path perspective, we explore this finding through the lens of translations on rough paths. Additionally, we investigate the geometric embedding for planar regularity structures.

The goal of this paper is to establish some facts concerning the problem of zeroing the output of an input-output system that does not have relative degree. The approach taken is to work with systems that have a Chen-Fliess series representation. The main result is that a class of generating series called primely nullable series provides the building blocks for solving this problem using the shuffle algebra. It is shown that the shuffle algebra on the set of generating polynomials is a unique factorization domain so that any polynomial can be uniquely factored modulo a permutation into its irreducible elements for the purpose of identifying nullable factors. This is achieved using the fact that this shuffle algebra is isomorphic to the symmetric algebra over the vector space spanned by Lyndon words. A specific algorithm for factoring generating polynomials into its irreducible factors is presented based on the Chen-Fox-Lyndon factorization of words.

Recent works have explored relations between classical and quantum statistical physics on the one hand and Voiculescu's theory of free probability on the other. Motivated by these results, the present work focuses on the notion of effective action, which is closely related to the large deviation rate function in classical probability and one-particle irreducible correlation functions in quantum field theories. The central aim is to understand how it can be defined and studied in free probability. In this respect, we introduce a suitable diagrammatic formalism.

We give series solutions to single insertion place propagator-type systems of Dyson--Schwinger equations using binary tubings of rooted trees. These solutions are combinatorially transparent in the sense that each tubing has a straightforward contribution. The Dyson--Schwinger equations solved here are more general than those previously solved by chord diagram techniques, including systems and non-integer values of the insertion parameter $s$. The goal of the paper is multi-fold. First, an explicit formula is derived to compute the non-commutative generating series of a closed-loop system when a (multi-input, multi-output) plant, given in Chen--Fliess series description is in multiplicative output feedback interconnection with another system, also given as Chen--Fliess series. Furthermore, it is shown that the multiplicative dynamic output feedback connection has a natural interpretation as a transformation group acting on the plant. A computational framework for computing the generating series for multiplicative dynamic output feedback is devised utilizing the Hopf algebras of the coordinate functions corresponding to the shuffle group and the multiplicative feedback group. The pre--Lie algebra in multiplicative feedback is shown to be an example of Foissy's com-pre-Lie algebras indexed by matrices with certain structure.

We consider the bialgebra of hypergraphs, a generalization of Schmitt's Hopf algebra of graphs, and show it has a cointeracting bialgebra. So one has a double bialgebra in the sense of L. Foissy, who recently proved there is then a unique double bialgebra morphism to the double bialgebra structure on the polynomial ring ${\mathbb Q}[x]$. We show the polynomial associated to a hypergraph is the hypergraph chromatic polynomial. Moreover hypergraphs occurs in quartets: there is a dual, a complement, and a dual complement hypergraph. These correspondences are involutions and give rise to three other double bialgebras, and three more chromatic polynomials. The role of coalgebras as well as algebraic groups in non-commutative probability has long been advocated by the school of von Waldenfels and Sch\"urmann. Another algebraic approach was introduced more recently, based on shuffle and pre-Lie calculus, and results in another construction of groups of characters encoding the behaviour of states. Comparing the two, the first approach, recast recently in a general categorical language by Manzel and Sch\"urmann, can be seen as largely driven by the theory of universal products, whereas the second construction builds on Hopf algebras and a suitable algebraization of the combinatorics of noncrossing set partitions. Although both address the same phenomena, moving between the two viewpoints is not obvious. We present here an attempt to unify the two approaches by making explicit the Hopf algebraic connections between them. Our presentation, although relying largely on classical ideas as well as results closely related to Manzel and Sch\"urmann's aforementioned work, is nevertheless original on several points and fills a gap in the non-commutative probability literature. In particular, we systematically use the language and techniques of algebraic groups together with shuffle group techniques to prove that two notions of algebraic groups naturally associated with free, respectively Boolean and monotone, probability theories identify. This article approaches the counting of subgraphs, in terms of signature-type functionals defined over combinatorial Hopf algebras of graphs. Well-known algebraic identities that arise in the context of counting subgraphs are then captured by their character property and a type of "Chen's identity". While different notions of subgraphs (and homomorphisms) correspond to different combinatorial Hopf algebras on graphs, we will show that they are all isomorphic to a polynomial Hopf algebra. We study a particular group law on formal power series in non-commuting variables induced by their interpretation as linear forms on a suitable graded connected word Hopf algebra. This group law is left-linear and is therefore associated to a pre-Lie structure on formal power series. We study these structures and show how they can be used to recast in a group theoretic form various identities and transformations on formal power series that have been central in the context of non-commutative probability theory, in particular in Voiculescu's theory of free probability.

We consider the group $(\mathcal{G},*)$ of unitized multiplicative functions in the incidence algebra of non-crossing partitions, where ``$*$'' denotes the convolution operation. We introduce a larger group $(\widetilde{\mathcal{G}},*)$ of unitized functions from the same incidence algebra, which satisfy a weaker condition of being ``semi-multiplicative''. The natural action of $\widetilde{\mathcal{G}}$ on sequences of multilinear functionals of a non-commutative probability space captures the combinatorics of transitions between moments and some brands of cumulants that are studied in the non-commutative probability literature. We use the framework of $\widetilde{\mathcal{G}}$ in order to explain why the multiplication of free random variables can be very nicely described in terms of Boolean cumulants and more generally in terms of $t$-Boolean cumulants, a one-parameter interpolation between free and Boolean cumulants arising from work of Bozejko and Wysoczanski. It is known that the group $\mathcal{G}$ can be naturally identified as the group of characters of the Hopf algebra Sym of symmetric functions. We show that $\widetilde{\mathcal{G}}$ can also be identified as group of characters of a Hopf algebra $\mathcal{T}$, which is an incidence Hopf algebra in the sense of Schmitt. The amalgamated $T$-transform of a non-commutative distribution was introduced by K.~Dykema. It provides a fundamental tool for computing distributions of random variables in Voiculescu's free probability theory. The $T$-transform factorizes in a rather non-trivial way over a product of free random variables. In this article, we present a simple graphical proof of this property, followed by a more conceptual one, using the abstract setting of an operad with multiplication.

Given an additive network of input-output systems where each node of the network is modeled by a locally convergent Chen-Fliess series, two basic properties of the network are established. First, it is shown that every input-output map between a given pair of nodes has a locally convergent Chen-Fliess series representation. Second, sufficient conditions are given under which the input-output map between a pair of nodes has a well defined relative degree as defined by its generating series. This analysis leads to the conclusion that this relative degree property is generic in a certain sense.

We explore the algebraic properties of a generalized version of the iterated-sums signature, inspired by previous work of F.~Kir\'aly and H.~Oberhauser. In particular, we show how to recover the character property of the associated linear map over the tensor algebra by considering a deformed quasi-shuffle product of words on the latter. Aiming for a systematic feature-extraction from time series, we introduce the iterated-sums signature over arbitrary commutative semirings. The case of the tropical semiring is a central, and our motivating example. It leads to features of (real-valued) time series that are not easily available using existing signature-type objects. We demonstrate how the signature extracts chronological aspects of a time series, and that its calculation is possible in linear time. Hairer's regularity structures transformed the solution theory of singular stochastic partial differential equations. The notions of positive and negative renormalisation are central and the intricate interplay between these two renormalisation procedures is captured through the combination of cointeracting bialgebras and an algebraic Birkhoff-type decomposition of bialgebra morphisms. This work revisits the latter by defining Bogoliubov-type recursions similar to Connes and Kreimer's formulation of BPHZ renormalisation. This chapter is divided into two parts. The first is largely expository and builds on Karandikar's axiomatisation of It{\^o} calculus for matrix-valued semimartin-gales. Its aim is to unfold in detail the algebraic structures implied for iterated It{\^o} and Stratonovich integrals. These constructions generalise the classical rules of Chen calculus for deterministic scalar-valued iterated integrals. The second part develops the stochastic analog of what is commonly called chronological calculus in control theory. We obtain in particular a pre-Lie Magnus formula for the logarithm of the It{\^o} stochastic exponential of matrix-valued semimartingales.

Boolean, free and monotone cumulants as well as relations among them, have proven to be important in the study of non-commutative probability theory. Quite notably, Boolean cumulants were successfully used to study free infinite divisibility via the Boolean Bercovici--Pata bijection. On the other hand, in recent years the concept of infinitesimal non-commutative probability has been developed, together with the notion of infinitesimal cumulants which can be useful in the context of combinatorial questions. In this paper, we show that the known relations among free, Boolean and monotone cumulants still hold in the infinitesimal framework. Our approach is based on the use of Grassmann algebra. Formulas involving infinitesimal cumulants can be obtained by applying a formal derivation to known formulas. The relations between the various types of cumulants turn out to be captured via the shuffle algebra approach to moment-cumulant relations in non-commutative probability theory. In this formulation, (free, Boolean and monotone) cumulants are represented as elements of the Lie algebra of infinitesimal characters over a particular combinatorial Hopf algebra. The latter consists of the graded connected double tensor algebra defined over a non-commutative probability space and is neither commutative nor cocommutative. In this note it is shown how the shuffle algebra approach naturally extends to the notion of infinitesimal non-commutative probability space. The basic step consists in replacing the base field as target space of linear Hopf algebra maps by the Grassmann algebra over the base field. Gian-Carlo Rota mentioned in one of his last articles the problem of developing a theory around the notion of integration algebras, which should be dual to the one of differential algebras. This idea has been developed historically along three lines: using properties of iterated integrals and generalisations thereof, as in the theory of rough paths; using the algebraic structures underlying chronological calculus such as shuffle and pre-Lie products, as they appear in theoretical physics and control theory; and, more generally, using a particular operator identity which came to be known as Rota-Baxter relation. The recent developments along each of these lines of research and their various application domains are not always known to other communities in mathematics and related fields. The general aim of this survey is therefore to present a modern and unified perspective on these approaches, featuring among others non-commutative Rota-Baxter algebras and related Hopf and Lie algebraic structures such as descent algebras, algebras of simplices as well as shuffle, pre- and post-Lie algebras and their enveloping algebras. Accordingly, two viewpoints are proposed. A geometric one, that can be derived using combinatorial properties of Euclidean simplices and the duality between integrands and integration domains in iterated integrals. An algebraic one, provided by the axiomatisation of integral calculus in terms of Rota-Baxter algebra.

We establish and explore a relationship between two approaches to moment-cumulant relations in free probability theory: on one side the main approach, due to Speicher, given in terms of M\"obius inversion on the lattice of noncrossing partitions, and on the other side the more recent non-commutative shuffle-algebra approach, where the moment-cumulant relations take the form of certain exponential-logarithm relations. We achieve this by exhibiting two operad structures on (noncrossing) partitions, different in nature: one is an ordinary, non-symmetric operad whose composition law is given by insertion into gaps between elements, the other is a coloured, symmetric operad with composition law expressing refinement of blocks. We show that these operad structures interact so as to make the corresponding incidence bialgebra of the former a comodule bialgebra for the latter. Furthermore, this interaction is compatible with the shuffle structure and thus unveils how the two approaches are intertwined. In data science, one is often confronted with a time series representing measurements of some quantity of interest. Usually, as a first step, features of the time series need to be extracted. These are numerical quantities that aim to succinctly describe the data and to dampen the influence of noise. In some applications, these features are also required to satisfy some invariance properties. In this paper, we concentrate on time-warping invariants. We show that these correspond to a certain family of iterated sums of the increments of the time series, known as quasisymmetric functions in the mathematics literature. In this work we extend the recently introduced group-theoretical approach to moment-cumulant relations in non-commutative probability theory to the notion of conditionally free cumulants. This approach is based on a particular combinatorial Hopf algebra which may be characterised as a non-cocommutative generalisation of the classical unshuffle Hopf algebra. Central to our work is the resulting non-commutative shuffle algebra structure on the graded dual. It implies an extension of the classical relation between the group of Hopf algebra characters and its Lie algebra of infinitesimal characters and, among others, the appearance of new forms of adjoint actions of the group on its Lie algebra which happens to play a key role in the new algebraic understanding of conditionally free cumulants., Comment: 24 pages

The central aim of this work is to understand rough differential equations on homogeneous spaces. We focus on the formal approach, by giving an explicit expansion of the solution at each point of the real line in terms of decorated planar forests. For this we develop the notion of planarly branched rough paths, following M. Gubinelli's branched rough paths. The definition is similar to the one in the flat case, the main difference being the replacement of the Butcher--Connes--Kreimer Hopf algebra of non-planar rooted forests by the Munthe-Kaas--Wright Hopf algebra of planar rooted forests. We show how the latter permits to handle rough differential equations on homogeneous spaces using planarly branched rough paths, the same way branched rough paths are used in the context of rough differential equations on finite-dimensional vector spaces. An analogue of T. Lyons' extension theorem is proven. The objective of this work is to compare several approaches to the process of renormalisation in the context of rough differential equations using the substitution bialgebra on rooted trees known from backward error analysis of $B$-series. For this purpose, we present a so-called arborification of the Hoffman--Ihara theory of quasi-shuffle algebra automorphisms. The latter are induced by formal power series, which can be seen to be special cases of the cointeraction of two Hopf algebra structures on rooted forests. In particular, the arborification of Hoffman's exponential map, which defines a Hopf algebra isomorphism between the shuffle and quasi-shuffle Hopf algebra, leads to a canonical renormalisation that coincides with Marcus' canonical extension for semimartingale driving signals. This is contrasted with the canonical geometric rough path of Hairer and Kelly by means of a recursive formula defined in terms of the coaction of the substitution bialgebra.

We explain the notion of a post-Lie algebra and outline its role in the theory of Lie group integrators.

In these notes we review and further explore the Lie enveloping algebra of a post-Lie algebra. From a Hopf algebra point of view, one of the central results, which will be recalled in detail, is the existence of a second Hopf algebra structure. By comparing group-like elements in suitable completions of these two Hopf algebras, we derive a particular map which we dub post-Lie Magnus expansion. These results are then considered in the case of Semenov-Tian-Shansky's double Lie algebra, where a post-Lie algebra is defined in terms of solutions of modified classical Yang-Baxter equation. In this context, we prove a factorization theorem for group-like elements. We present an approach to classical definitions and results on cumulant--moment relations and Wick polynomials based on extensive use of convolution products of linear functionals on a coalgebra. This allows, in particular, to understand the construction of Wick polynomials as the result of a Hopf algebra deformation under the action of linear automorphisms induced by multivariate moments associated to an arbitrary family of random variables with moments of all orders. Commutative shuffle products are known to be intimately related to universal formulas for products, exponentials and logarithms in group theory as well as in the theory of free Lie algebras, such as, for instance, the Baker-Campbell-Hausdorff formula or the analytic expression of a Lie group law in exponential coordinates in the neighbourhood of the identity. Non-commutative shuffle products happen to have similar properties with respect to pre-Lie algebras. However, the situation is more complex since in the non-commutative framework three exponential-type maps and corresponding logarithms are naturally defined. This results in several new formal group laws together with new operations - for example a new notion of adjoint action particularly well fitted to the new theory. These developments are largely motivated by various constructions in non-commutative probability theory. The second part of the article is devoted to exploring and deepening this perspective. Poincare's center problem asks for conditions under which a planar polynomial system of ordinary differential equations has a center. It is well understood that the Abel equation naturally describes the problem in a convenient coordinate system. In 1989, Devlin described an algebraic approach for constructing sufficient conditions for a center using a linear recursion for the generating series of the solution to the Abel equation. Subsequent work by the authors linked this recursion to feedback structures in control theory and combinatorial Hopf algebras, but only for the lowest degree case. The present work introduces what turns out to be the nontrivial multivariable generalization of this connection between the center problem, feedback control, and combinatorial Hopf algebras. Once the picture is completed, it is possible to provide generalizations of some known identities involving the Abel generating series. A linear recursion for the antipode of this new Hopf algebra is also developed using coderivations. In this note we further explore the properties of universal enveloping algebras associated to a post-Lie algebra. Emphasizing the role of the Magnus expansion, we analyze the properties of group like-elements belonging to (suitable completions) of those Hopf algebras. Of particular interest is the case of post-Lie algebras defined in terms of solutions of modified classical Yang-Baxter equations. In this setting we will study factorization properties of the aforementioned group-like elements.
