Abstract

Experiments at synchrotron radiation sources and X-ray Free-Electron Lasers in the soft X-ray energy range ($250$eV--$2$keV) stand to benefit from the adaptation of the hybrid silicon detector technology for low energy photons. Inverse Low Gain Avalanche Diode (iLGAD) sensors provide an internal gain, enhancing the signal-to-noise ratio and allowing single photon detection below $1$keV using hybrid detectors. In addition, an optimization of the entrance window of these sensors enhances their quantum efficiency (QE). In this work, the QE and the gain of a batch of different iLGAD diodes with optimized entrance windows were characterized using soft X-rays at the Surface/Interface:Microscopy beamline of the Swiss Light Source synchrotron. Above $250$eV, the QE is larger than $55\%$ for all sensor variations, while the charge collection efficiency is close to $100\%$. The average gain depends on the gain layer design of the iLGADs and increases with photon energy. A fitting procedure is introduced to extract the multiplication factor as a function of the absorption depth of X-ray photons inside the sensors. In particular, the multiplication factors for electron- and hole-triggered avalanches are estimated, corresponding to photon absorption beyond or before the gain layer, respectively., Comment: 16 pages, 8 figures

Abstract

The evolution of charge carriers in photoexcited room temperature ZnO nanoparticles in solution is investigated using ultrafast ultraviolet photoluminescence spectroscopy, ultrafast Zn K-edge absorption spectroscopy and ab-initio molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The photoluminescence is excited at 4.66 eV, well above the band edge, and shows that electron cooling in the conduction band and exciton formation occur in <500 fs, in excellent agreement with theoretical predictions. The X-ray absorption measurements, obtained upon excitation close to the band edge at 3.49 eV, are sensitive to the migration and trapping of holes. They reveal that the 2 ps transient largely reproduces the previously reported transient obtained at 100 ps time delay in synchrotron studies. In addition, the X-ray absorption signal is found to rise in ~1.4 ps, which we attribute to the diffusion of holes through the lattice prior to their trapping at singly-charged oxygen vacancies. Indeed, the MD simulations show that impulsive trapping of holes induces an ultrafast expansion of the cage of Zn atoms in <200 fs, followed by an oscillatory response at a frequency of ~100 cm-1, which corresponds to a phonon mode of the system involving the Zn sub-lattice.

Abstract

We show the developments carried out to improve the silicon sensor technology for the detection of soft X-rays with hybrid X-ray detectors. An optimization of the entrance window technology is required to improve the quantum efficiency. The LGAD technology can be used to amplify the signal generated by the X-rays and to increase the signal-to-noise ratio, making single photon resolution in the soft X-ray energy range possible. In this paper, we report first results obtained from an LGAD sensor production with an optimized thin entrance window. Single photon detection of soft X-rays down to 452~eV has been demonstrated from measurements, with a signal-to-noise ratio better than 20., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures

9. Brukarens förväntningar på knapporientering och dimringsfunktionen hos styrningspanel med fyra knappar

Abstract

Introduction – Digital systems for lighting control are becoming increasingly common. One way to manually control these systems is through control panels with buttons. These panels can vary in both appearance (layout) and function (user interaction). These differences can create confusion and, in the worst case, result in the control equipment not being used. This study specifically focuses on panels with four buttons and aims to provide a basis for developing button panels that are as intuitive as possible for end-users. Method – To determine the preferred layout among users, a quantitative online survey with 60 respondents was conducted. Respondents were asked about their preferred button placement for controlling the dimming function on a 4-button panel. This question was repeated for three different button layouts: horizontal, vertical, and square. At the end of the survey, respondents were asked about their overall preferred layout. To determine the user's expected interaction with a button panel, an experiment was conducted. In the experiment, 36 participants tested identical panels with different types of interaction programming. They performed a task while the time was recorded, and in addition to the time, participants also provided a qualitative evaluation of which of the three panels they preferred and why. Results – The survey responses show that a vertical button layout is preferred by the majority of respondents. The top button received the most votes for the "dim-up” function, while the bottom button received the most votes for the "dim-down" function. The results from the experiment show that a panel with scene-based lighting was the fastest for performing the task. Scene-based lighting means that each button is linked to a specific lighting-scene without providing any fine-tuned manual control. A panel with continuous pressure to adjust the brightness took the longest time to complete the task. Metod – För att svara på vilken layout som föredras av brukare gjordes en kvantitativ online-enkät som skickades ut till 60 respondenter. I enkäten fick respondenterna svara på föredragen knapplacering för att styra dim-funktionen på en 4-knappspanel. Denna fråga repeterades för tre olika knapp-layouter: vågrät, lodrät, och kvadratisk layout. I slutet av enkäten frågades respondenterna vilken layout de föredrog överlag. För att svara på vilken interaktion med en knappanel som brukare förväntar sig gjordes ett experiment. I experimentet fick 36 deltagare testa identiska paneler med olika typer av interaktionsprogrammering, de fick utföra en uppgift där tiden registrerades, utöver tiden fick deltagare även ge ett kvalitativt omdöme om vilken av de tre panelerna de föredrog och varför. Resultat – Enkätsvaren visar att en lodrät knapplayout föredras av flest respondenter, knappen högst upp fick flest röster för funktionen ”dim-upp” och knappen längst ner fick flest röster för funktionen ”dim-ner”. Resultaten från experimentet visar att en panel med scenbaserad belysning var snabbast för att utföra uppgiften, scenbaserad belysning innebär att varje knapp är kopplad till ett specifikt läge utan möjlighet till mer finjusterad manuell kontroll. Providing reliable and performant Data Acquisition System (DAQ) at Free Electron Lasers (FELs) is a challenging and complex task due to the inherent characteristics of a pulsed machine and consequent need of beam synchronous shot-to-shot DAQ, which enables correlation of collected data associated with each FEL pulse. We will focus on experiences gathered during the process of moving towards 100 Hz operation at SwissFEL from the perspective of beam synchronous DAQ. Given the scarce resources and challenging deadlines, a lot of efforts went into managing conflicting stakeholder expectations and priorities and into allocation of time for operation support and maintenance tasks on one side and time for design and development tasks on the other side. Abstract

At the center for Proton Therapy of the Paul Scherrer Institute about 450 cancer patients are treated yearly using accelerated protons in three treatment areas. The facility is active since 1984 and for each patient we keep detailed log files containing machine measurements during each fraction of the treatment, which we analyze daily to guarantee dose and position values within the prescribed tolerances. Furthermore, each control and safety system generates textual log files as well as periodic measurements such as pressure, temperature, beam intensity, magnetic fields or reaction time of components. This adds up currently to approximately 5 GB per day. Downtime of the facility is both inconvenient for patients and staff, as well as financially relevant. This article describes how we have extended our data analysis strategies using machine archived parameters and online measurements to understand interdependencies, to perform preventive maintenance of ageing components and to optimize processes. We have chosen Python to interface, structure and analyze the different data sources in an standardized manner. 13. PShell: from SLS beamlines to the SwissFEL control room

PShell is an in-house developed scripting environment in use at PSI since 2014. Started as a beamline data acquisition tool at SLS, PShell is being used by different SwissFEL groups for the commissioning and operation of the SwissFEL machine. New features were added to meet new requirements, such as supporting beam synchronous data and streamed cameras. Besides providing a workbench for developing data acquisition logic, PShell also offers a convenient way to create user interfaces/panels that can easily trigger the execution of logic. Abstract

The SwissFEL beam-synchronous data-acquisition system is based on several novel concepts and technologies. It is targeted on immediate data availability and online processing and is capable of assembling an overall data view of the whole machine, thanks to its distributed and scalable back-end. Load on data sources is reduced by immediately streaming data as soon as it becomes available. The streaming technology used provides load balancing and fail-over by design. Data channels from various sources can be efficiently aggregated and combined into new data streams for immediate online monitoring, data analysis and processing. The system is dynamically configurable, various acquisition frequencies can be enabled, and data can be kept for a defined time window. All data is available and accessible enabling advanced pattern detection and correlation during acquisition time. Accessing the data in a code-agnostic way is also possible through the same REST API that is used by the web-frontend. Abstract

The SwissFEL is a new free electron laser facility at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) in Switzerland. Commissioning started in 2016 and resulted in first lasing in December 2016 (albeit not on the design energy). In 2017, the commissioning continued and will result in the first pilot experiments at the end of the year. The close interaction of experiment and accelerator components as well as the pulsed electron beam required a well thought out integration of the control system including some new concepts and layouts. Abstract

Recently, the installation of the components for the free electron laser SwissFEL has started at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI). In March 2016, beginning of the injector commissioning is planned and first lasing is foreseen a year later. New hardware, like VME64x-boards (IFC 1210, an P2020 based intelligent FPGA controller from IOxOS) and -crates (Trenew), timing system (from MRF with advanced features), motion controllers (Power PMAC from Delta Tau, and MDrive from Schneider), among others, as well as modern field buses, pose great challenges to the controls team. The close interaction of machine- and experiment-components require advanced software concepts for data-acquisition, -distribution, and -archiving. An overview of the project will be presented and the different HW and SW solutions based on the experience gained from preliminary implementations at other facilities of PSI will be explained. Abstract

Data acquisition software is an essential component of modern macromolecular crystallography (MX) beamlines, enabling efficient use of beam time at synchrotron facilities. Developed at the Paul Scherrer Institute, the DA+ data acquisition software is implemented at all three Swiss Light Source (SLS) MX beamlines. DA+ consists of distributed services and components written in Python and Java, which communicate via messaging and streaming technologies. The major components of DA+ are the user interface, acquisition engine, online processing and database. Immediate data quality feedback is achieved with distributed automatic data analysis routines. The software architecture enables exploration of the full potential of the latest instrumentation at the SLS MX beamlines, such as the SmarGon goniometer and the EIGER X 16M detector, and development of new data collection methods.
