Question-and-answer (Q&A) sessions following research talks provide key opportunities for the audience to engage in scientific discourse. Gender inequities persist in academia, where women are underrepresented as faculty and their contributions are less valued than men's. In the present research, we tested how this gender difference translates to face-to-face Q&A-session participation and its psychological correlates. Across two studies examining participation in three conferences, men disproportionately participated in Q&A sessions in a live, recorded conference (N = 189 Q&A interactions), and women were less comfortable participating in Q&A sessions and more likely to fear backlash for their participation (N = 234 conference attendees). Additionally, women were more likely to hold back questions because of anxiety, whereas men were more likely to hold back questions to make space for others to participate. To the extent that men engage more than women in Q&A sessions, men may continue to have more influence over the direction of science.

Replication studies in psychological science sometimes fail to reproduce prior findings. If these studies use methods that are unfaithful to the original study or ineffective in eliciting the phenomenon of interest, then a failure to replicate may be a failure of the protocol rather than a challenge to the original finding. Formal pre-data-collection peer review by experts may address shortcomings and increase replicability rates. We selected 10 replication studies from the Reproducibility Project: Psychology (RP:P; Open Science Collaboration, 2015) for which the original authors had expressed concerns about the replication designs before data collection; only one of these studies had yielded a statistically significant effect (p

To what extent are research results influenced by subjective decisions that scientists make as they design studies? Fifteen research teams independently designed studies to answer five original research questions related to moral judgments, negotiations, and implicit cognition. Participants from 2 separate large samples (total N > 15,000) were then randomly assigned to complete 1 version of each study. Effect sizes varied dramatically across different sets of materials designed to test the same hypothesis: Materials from different teams rendered statistically significant effects in opposite directions for 4 of 5 hypotheses, with the narrowest range in estimates being d = -0.37 to + 0.26. Meta-analysis and a Bayesian perspective on the results revealed overall support for 2 hypotheses and a lack of support for 3 hypotheses. Overall, practically none of the variability in effect sizes was attributable to the skill of the research team in designing materials, whereas considerable variability was attributable to the hypothesis being tested. In a forecasting survey, predictions of other scientists were significantly correlated with study results, both across and within hypotheses. Crowdsourced testing of research hypotheses helps reveal the true consistency of empirical support for a scientific claim. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2020 APA, all rights reserved).

The university participant pool is a key resource for behavioral research, and data quality is believed to vary over the course of the academic semester. This crowdsourced project examined time of semester variation in 10 known effects, 10 individual differences, and 3 data quality indicators over the course of the academic semester in 20 participant pools (N = 2696) and with an online sample (N = 737). Weak time of semester effects were observed on data quality indicators, participant sex, and a few individual differences—conscientiousness, mood, and stress. However, there was little evidence for time of semester qualifying experimental or correlational effects. The generality of this evidence is unknown because only a subset of the tested effects demonstrated evidence for the original result in the whole sample. Mean characteristics of pool samples change slightly during the semester, but these data suggest that those changes are mostly irrelevant for detecting effects.

- Abstract
We will recruit 500 participants from Amazon's Mechanical Turk. Exclusion Criteria: We will exclude any participants who fail the 1 item attention check. We will delete any repeat IP addresses. Analysis plan: See attached syntax for how variables will be created. 1. We hypothesize that Manichaeism will predict social distance differences between liberals and conservatives, even after controlling for ideology. Testing Hypothesis 1: We will run a linear regression with ideological manichaeism predicting ideologically continuous social distance, liberal social distance and conservative social distance. We will run a step-wise linear regression with ideology entered at the first step and Manichaeism at the second step predicting ideologically continuous social distance, liberal social distance, and conservative social distance. 2. We hypothesize that Manichaeism will predict social distance differences between ingroups and outgroups, even after controlling for ideological extremity. Testing Hypothesis 2: We will run a linear regression with manichaeism extremity predicting ingroup social distance, outgroup social distance and the difference between ingroup and outgroup social distance social distance. We will run a step-wise linear regression with ideological extremity entered at the first step and Manichaeism extremity at the second step predicting ingroup social distance, outgroup social distance, and the difference between ingroup and outgroup social distance. 3. We hypothesize that Manichaeism will predict outgroup distancing more than ingroup closeness. Testing Hypothesis 3: We will test whether the correlation between Manichaeism and ingroup closeness is smaller than the correlation between outgroup closeness and Manichaeism. 4. We hypothesize that Right Wing Authoritarianism and Social Dominance Orientation will predict preference for conservative over liberal closeness, but that this relationship will be explained by ideology. We will run a linear regression with SDO/RWA predicting ideologically continuous social distance, liberal social distance and conservative social distance. We will run a step-wise linear regression with ideology entered at the first step and SDO/ RWA at the second step predicting ideologically continuous social distance, liberal social distance, and conservative social distance. 5.We hypothesize that RWA and SDO will not predict ingroup or outgroup social distance or liberal conservative intergroup social distance differences. Testing Hypothesis 5: We will run a linear regression with SDO/RWA predicting ingroup social distance, outgroup social distance, and the difference between ingroup and outgroup social distance.

33. Manichaeism Study 2

- Abstract
In Study 2, we also tested whether Manichaeism scores would predict intergroup dependent measures that occur more frequently in daily life such as willingness to have a partisan individual in a close social environment or sit near them on a bench. Additionally, prior research has shown that negative attitudes toward an outgroup is independent from ingroup support (Brewer, 1999). We sought to test whether high Manichaeism extremity predicts ingroup closeness, outgroup distancing or both. Finally, typical ideology measures are only able to identify ingroup and outgroup perceptions for individuals who indicate conservative or liberal ideological leaning. For the increasing number of individuals who do not identify with particular parties (Gallup, 2015) or do not feel represented by their ideological group (Johnson et al., 2014; xxxcitation), this method of identifying ingroups and outgroups can become less meaningful when attempting to predict important intergroup outcomes. Our scale provides a way to measure intergroup perception biases without requiring that individuals identify with a particular group. This can help to avoid desirability biases which could affect self report as well as issues where individuals feel strongly about their own ideological position but believe that those associated with their ideological group are not representative. To this end, we hypothesize that Manichaeism scores will be predictive of intergroup perceptions and outcomes for both partisan and nonpartisan identifying individuals. We also hypothesize that using participants’ scores on the ideological Manichaeism measure to identify ingroups and outgroups will more strongly predict closeness perceptions and preferences than ideological identification regardless of partisan ideological identification.

45. Testing the Incremental Validity of the IAT using Structural Equation Modeling
- Author
-
Ebersole, Charles, Buttrick, Nick, and Axt, Jordan
- Abstract
This project will examine the ability of the Implicit Association Test (IAT) to predict outcomes above and beyond explicit attitudes using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). SEM allows for tests of incremental predictive validity while avoiding some of the issues of ordinary least squares regression with regard to false positives (OLS regression has been the primary model for testing the incremental predictive validity of the IAT in the past).
