AbstractThis study evaluated the legal frameworks that addressed the rights of migrant fishers in Taiwan, Japan, and South Korea, using selected provisions of the ILO Work in Fishing Convention, C188, as the criteria. Based on the findings, several recommendations are presented to improve migrant labor rights in the distant water fisheries (DWF). These include further aligning national laws with C188 provisions, enhancing pre-employment training programs for foreign fishers, prioritizing medical care and safety measures, and working with associations of fishers to improve compliance with labor and safety regulations. Collaborative co-management strategies, partnerships with worker and non-governmental organizations, and public awareness campaigns are also recommended. Encouraging corporate social responsibility among fishery corporations can improve working conditions and fair treatment for migrant fishers. In conclusion, by implementing the suggested policy measures, governments can make progress toward achieving fair treatment for migrant workers in the fisheries industry and support United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The origin and process of the domestication of wild animals have long fascinated scientists. However, there are no reliable methods to distinguish between tamed and wild animals. Here, we present a new method to identify tamed and wild juvenile brown bears (Ursus arctos) using retrospective isotope analysis of the femur. We used femurs from the nine bear cubs and the tibia from one domesticated dog excavated from the Nijibetsu Shuwan Kumaokuriba site, Hokkaido Islands, Japan (late 19th century–1939 AD). These bears were potentially tamed by indigenous Ainu people, and the domesticated dog was used as a reference of a tamed animal. We subdivided these bones into 10 sections along the growing axis, extracted collagen and measured the stable nitrogen isotope ratios (δ15N). The bone sections of the domesticated dog had constant δ15N values that were as high as that of salmon, suggesting that tamed animals exclusively consumed a marine diet fed to them by the Ainu. Notably, two of nine brown bear cubs showed a temporal elevation of δ15N to the similar isotope ratios of the dog tibia, which is unlikely to occur in the wild condition, strongly suggesting that they were tamed and fed by the Ainu people. Understanding species from an ecological and phylogenetic perspective facilitates an understanding of their conservation status in relation to the changing world. The frog genus Pelophylax is among the largest in terms of amphibian biomass in the Palearctic, but species have not been thoroughly studied at the Asian continental scale. The phylogeographic relationship, behavioural ecology, and ecological requirements within the genus need clarification, despite generally good local coverage. Here, for the first time, we conducted a literature review focused on phylogeography and behavioural ecology, supported by ecological niche modelling of twelve Asian Pelophylax lineages. Finally, we compiled the known threats for each of the lineages. We first determined the presence of twelve species and species-candidate lineages. In terms of behavioural ecology, the main difference among lineages is the time to metamorphosis and the time to reach sexual maturity. The ecological models highlighted a match between the known presence of each clade and their suitable habitat and highlighted the Syr Darya drainage on the eastern shore of the Caspian Sea for the non-described Pelophylax "Syr Darya lineage". Finally, we highlighted the greatest variation among lineages in terms of threats, as some lineages are threatened by numerous factors, whereas others are expanding. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

(1) Background: despite the fact that nowadays the genus Vulpes Frisch, 1775, is the most diverse among extant Canidae, its fossil record is utterly scarce, especially in the Asian Pliocene. The sparse nature of this record further complicates the reconstruction of the evolutionary scenario to fit these taxa with extant species. The situation seems to change slightly in the Early Pleistocene when two species are recorded: Vulpes alopecoides (Del Campana, 1913) in Europe and Vulpes chikushanensis, Young, 1930, in Asian localities. Unlike the former, which has an extensive record, the remains of the Chinese V. chikushanensis are sporadic and the validity of the taxon has also been questioned. (2) Methods: the study of the specimens from the Early Pleistocene site of Bajiazui (1.8–1.2 Ma, Qingyang, Gansu) in comparison to an extensive sample of Vulpes spp. The Pliocene–Early Pleistocene is relevant for the delimitation of fossil foxes variability; (3) Results: morphologically and morphometrically, the specimens of Bajiazui fit with the specimens of V. chikushanensis from other Chinese localities of the Early Pleistocene, e.g., Longdan (Gansu) and Huiyu (Fangshang), highlighting some difference with the latest Early Pleistocene forms of Jigushan fox; (4) Conclusions: the revision of the Asian fossil record of Vulpes is crucial in our attempt to understand and reconstruct the evolution of carnivoran guild during the late Early Pleistocene (1.8–0.8 Ma). The fox remains from Bajiazui, although fragmentary, add a valuable piece to our knowledge of V. chikushanensis, a species possibly strongly related to the extant Vulpes corsac (Linnaeus, 1768). Emerging infectious diseases are on the rise in many different taxa, including, among others, the amphibian batrachochytrids, the snake fungal disease and the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) virus, responsible for Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in mammals. Following the onset of the pandemic linked to COVID-19, eastern Asia has shown strong leadership, taking actions to regulate the trade of potential vector species in several regions. These actions were taken in response to an increase in public awareness, and the need for a quick reaction to mitigate against further pandemics. However, trade restrictions rarely affect amphibians, despite the risk of pathogen transmission, directly, or indirectly through habitat destruction and the loss of vector consumption. Thus, species that help alleviate the risk of zoonoses or provide biological control are not protected. Hence, in view of the global amphibian decline and the risk of zoonoses, we support the current wildlife trade regulations and support measures to safeguard wildlife from overexploitation. The current period of regulation overhaul should be used as a springboard for amphibian conservation. To mitigate risks, we suggest the following stipulations specifically for amphibians. I) Restrictions to amphibian farming in eastern Asia, in relation to pathogen transmission and the establishment of invasive species. II) Regulation of the amphibian pet trade, with a focus on potential vector species. III) Expansion of the wildlife trade ban, to limit the wildlife-human-pet interface. The resulting actions will benefit both human and wildlife populations, as they will lead to a decrease in the risk of zoonoses and better protection of the environment.Significance statementThere is an increasing number of emerging infectious diseases impacting all species, including amphibians, reptiles and mammals. The latest threat to humans is the virus responsible for COVID-19, and the resulting pandemic. Countries in eastern Asia have taken steps to regulate wildlife trade and prevent further zoonoses thereby decreasing the risk of pathogens arising from wild species. However, as amphibians are generally excluded from regulations we support specific trade restrictions: I) Restrictions to amphibian farming; II) regulation of the amphibian pet trade; III) expansion of the wildlife trade ban. These restrictions will benefit both human and wildlife populations by decreasing the risks of zoonoses and better protecting the environment.

Aim: Despite global efforts in public health campaigns concerning chronic kidney disease (CKD), awareness of the condition remains low. We evaluated CKD awareness and related factors to identify an effective way to raise awareness. Methods: This study assessed laboratory‐confirmed CKD and self‐reported CKD using a population‐based cohort (baseline from 2012 to 2014, age ≥40 years) in Niigata, Japan. Self‐reported CKD was obtained at a 5‐year follow‐up survey and laboratory‐confirmed CKD was diagnosed when an estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) < 60 mL/min/1.73 m2 or dipstick urinary protein ≥1+ was observed in at least two health check‐ups during the 5‐year period. CKD awareness was defined as a match between laboratory‐confirmed and self‐reported CKD. The association between characteristics and CKD awareness was tested by multivariable logistic regression analysis with adjustment for eGFR and other potential confounders. Results: The analytic population comprised 7472 individuals (mean age, 65.6 years old, 51.2% women) and 19.4% with laboratory‐confirmed CKD. The sensitivity and specificity of the survey question concerning self‐reported CKD were 12.4% and 98.2%, respectively. Among the participants with laboratory‐confirmed CKD, significant factors associated with CKD awareness were male sex (adjusted odds ratio [95% confidence interval], 1.81 [1.27, 2.59]), a history of urinary tract stone (1.86 [1.06, 3.26]), age (0.97 [0.95, 0.99]), and married status (0.66 [0.44, 0.99]). Conclusion: Our findings suggest that known lifestyle‐related diseases that could cause CKD are not associated with CKD awareness independently of kidney function and that a sex‐dependent approach may help to raise CKD awareness in community‐dwelling Japanese adults. As important atmospheric circulation patterns in Northern Hemisphere (NH), the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) and the Western Pacific teleconnection (WP) affect the winter climate in Eurasia. In order to explore the combined effects of NAO and WP on East Asian (EA) temperature, the NAO and WP indices are divided into four phases from 1980–2021: the positive NAO and WP phase (NAO+/WP+), the negative NAO and WP phase (NAO−/WP−), the positive NAO and negative WP phase (NAO+/WP−), the negative NAO and positive WP phase (NAO−/WP+). In the phase of NAO+/WP+, the low geopotential height (GH) stays in north of EA at 50°–80°N; the surface air temperature anomaly (SATA) is 0.8–1 °C lower than Southern Asian. In the phase of NAO−/WP−, the center of high temperature and GH locate in the northeast of EA; the cold air spreads to Southern Asia, causing the SATA decreases 1–1.5 °C. In the phase of NAO+/WP−, the high GH belt is formed at 55°–80°N. Meanwhile, the center of high SATA locates in the north of Asia that increases 0.8–1.1 °C. The cold airflow causes temperature dropping 0.5–1 °C in the south of EA. The SATA improves 0.5–1.5 °C in south of EA in the phase of NAO−/WP+. The belt of high GH is formed at 25°–50°N, and blocks the cold air which from Siberia. The NAO and WP generate two warped plate pressure structures in NH, and affect the temperature by different pressure configurations. NAO and WP form different GH, and GH acts to block and push airflow by affecting the air pressure, then causes the temperature to be different from the north and south of EA. Finally, the multiple linear regression result shows that NAO and WP are weakened by each other such as the phase of NAO+/WP+ and NAO−/WP−. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Epermenia sinjovi Gaedike, 1993, a species with a hitherto westernmost known occurrence in Central Siberia, is recorded from the European Alps (Tyrol, Austria and Bavaria, Germany). Its identification is based on DNA barcodes and morphological characteristics. The probability of a recent introduction is considered as very low due to the remoteness and wild nature of the habitat, and it seems likely that the species was previously over-looked due to its similarity to Epermenia chaerophyllella (Goeze, 1783).

The iconic sabretooth Homotherium is thought to have hunted cooperatively, but the origin of this behaviour and correlated morphological adaptations are largely unexplored. Here we report the most primitive species of Amphimachairodus (Amphimachairodus hezhengensis sp. nov.), a member of Machairodontini basal to Homotherium, from the Linxia Basin, northeastern border of the Tibetan Plateau (9.8–8.7 Ma). The long snout, laterally oriented and posteriorly located orbit of Amphimachairodus suggest a better ability to observe the surrounding environment, rather than targeting single prey, pointing to an adaptation to the open environment or social behaviour. A pathological forepaw of Amphimachairodus provides direct evidence of partner care. Our analyses of trait evolutionary rates support that traits correlated with killing behaviour and open environment adaptation evolved prior to other traits, suggesting that changes in hunting behaviour may be the major evolutionary driver in the early evolution of the lineage. A. hezhengensis represents one of the most important transitions in the evolution of Machairodontini, leading to adaptation in open environments and contributing to their further dispersal and radiation worldwide. This rapid morphological change is likely to be correlated with increasingly arid environments caused by the rise of the Tibetan Plateau, and competition from abundant large carnivores in this area. Background/Aims Symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), a common gut-brain interaction disorder, deteriorate patients’ quality of life and increase medical needs; therefore, IBS represents a significant global burden. The estimated global prevalence is approximately 10%; however, accumulated evidence shows international heterogeneity. In this study, we have described and compared the prevalence of IBS in 3 East Asian countries: Japan (Tokyo and Fukuoka), China (Beijing), and South Korea (Seoul). Methods We conducted an internet-based cross-sectional survey of the urban population aged > 20 years in the abovementioned countries. We recruited equal numbers of age- (20s-60s) and sex-matched participants (3910 residents). IBS was diagnosed according to the Rome III criteria, and the subtypes were analyzed. Results The overall prevalence of IBS with 95% CI was 12.6% (11.6-13.7); the prevalence was significantly different across Japan, China, and South Korea (14.9% [13.4-16.5], 5.5% [4.3-7.1], and 15.6% [13.3-18.3], respectively) (P < 0.001). Furthermore, 54.9% of patients were male. IBS-mixed was the most prevalent subtype; the prevalence of other subtypes varied. Conclusions The overall prevalence of IBS in the 3 countries was slightly higher than the global prevalence, and it was significantly lower in China than in Japan and South Korea. IBS prevalence was the highest and lowest among individuals in their 40s and 60s, respectively. Male individuals had a higher prevalence of IBS with diarrhea. Species of Gyroporus from southern China were studied in this study. Based on morphology and molecular phylogenetic analyses of DNA sequences from the nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer (ITS), the nuclear ribosomal large subunit (nrLSU), and the mitochondrial adenosine triphosphate ATP synthase subunit 6 (atp6), Gyroporus was divided into four main branches in the phylogenetic tree, and four sections were firstly proposed i.e. Gyroporus sect. Castaneus, G. sect. Cyanescens, G. sect. Longicystidiatus and G. sect. Pallidus. Five new species, i.e. G. alboluteus, G. atrocyanescens, G. pseudolongicystidiatus, G. pallidus and G. subcaerulescens, were revealed from China, and their phylogenetic positions were also analysed. Among them, G. alboluteus and G. pallidus were nested into the sect. Pallidus, although morphologically similar to G. castaneus; G. atrocyanescens and G. subcaerulescens, with obvious cyanescent oxidation reactions, were nested into the sect. Cyanescens; and G. pseudolongicystidiatus characterised by its long cystidia and was nested into the sect. Longicystidiatus. The new species were formally described and illustrated in the present study, and a key to the sections and species of Gyroporus in China was provided.

This study presents the observations of midlatitude plasma irregularities over Eastern Asia during a moderate magnetic storm on 16 July 2003. Multi-instrumental observations, including the ground-based ionosondes, the GNSS networks, and the CHAMP and ROCSAT-1 satellites, were utilized to investigate the occurrence and characteristics of midlatitude plasma irregularities. The midlatitude strong spread F (SSF) mainly occurred in the midnight–morning sector as observed by ionosondes over Japan during this storm. SSF was related to plasma depletions, which is also recorded by GNSS network in the form of the enhancement of the rate of total electron content (TEC) change index (ROTI). The possible mechanism for the generation of SSF is that the enhanced eastward electric fields, associated with the prompt penetration electric fields and disturbance dynamo electric fields, cause the uplift and latitudinal extension of equatorial plasma bubbles (EPBs) to generate the observed midlatitude SSF further. Meanwhile, plasma density increased significantly under the influence of this storm. In addition, other common type of spread F, frequency spread F (FSF), was observed over Japan on the non-storm day and/or at high latitude station WK545, which seems to be closely related to the coupling of medium-scale traveling ionospheric disturbances (MSTIDs) and sporadic E (Es) layer. The above results indicate that various types of midlatitude spread F can be produced by different physical mechanisms. It is found that SSF can significantly affect the performance of radio wave propagation compared with FSF. Our results show that space weather events have a significant influence on the day-to-day variability of the occurrence and characteristics of ionospheric F-region irregularities at midlatitudes. Geochemical compositions of Cenozoic intraplate volcanic rocks in eastern Asia reveal a highly heterogeneous mantle beneath them. Basalts from the northeast Asia are characterized by EM1 (Enriched Mantle-1) isotopic compositions while those from the southeast Asia are dominated by EM2 (Enriched Mantle-2) isotopes, and they converge on a common mantle component (C). Up to now, the overwhelming majority of studies have focused on the nature and origin of the enriched mantle domains, yet that of the common mantle component remain poorly constrained. In this study, we report compositions of olivines and melt inclusions for Cenozoic Halaha-Chaihe basalts from the Greater Khingan Range (GKR) in northeast China to constrain their source and origin. These basalts have compositions at the intersection of the EM1–C and EM2–C arrays and can represent the common mantle component beneath eastern Asia. Olivine phenocrysts in Halaha-Chaihe basalts are rich in Ni (1320–3033 ppm), poor in Mn (1038–2486 ppm) and Ca (364–2244 ppm), and show high Fe/Mn (64–90) and low Mn/Zn (< 13) ratios. These compositions are consistent with a pyroxenite source. The Halaha-Chaihe primary magma compositions, which were calculated from melt inclusion by adding/subtracting olivine until equilibrium with olivine of Fo88.6, show high MgO (12.92–14.33 wt%) and TiO2 (1.89–2.46 wt%), and low SiO2 (46.2–47.88 wt%), CaO (7.59–9.66 wt%) and Al2O3 (10.65–12.52 wt%) contents. Comparison between the inferred primary magma compositions and experimental partial melts further indicates that the mantle source was dominated by silica-deficient pyroxenites. This is supported by the CMAS projection, showing that all samples fall on the silica-poor side of the En-CaTs join. Geohygrometer, thermometer and oxybarometer calculations using olivine and melt inclusion indicate that the Halaha-Chaihe magmas were relatively wet (~ 1.02–2.83 wt% H2O), hot (~ 1050–1250 °C) and oxidized (FMQ + 1.2), and by inference that their mantle source was also relatively wet, hot, and oxidized. Seismic tomographic images show that the subducting Pacific slab is stagnant in the mantle transition zone (MTZ) with its western edge extending to the eastern margin of the GKR, approximately beneath the Halaha-Chaihe volcanic field. Integrating the geochemical and geophysical observations, we propose that the silica-deficient pyroxenite source of the Halaha-Chaihe basalts was most likely derived from melt-rock reaction or mechanical mixing between the subducted Pacific oceanic crust and ambient mantle in the MTZ, and that such zones are responsible for the extensive low-Vp anomalies and common mantle component presently observed beneath eastern Asia. A collection with several complete crania and mandibles recently found in the Latest Miocene Xingjiawan Fauna, Yongdeng, northeastern China enables a re-discussion of generic differences of metailurine felids. Four metailurine felids, including three new species, i.e., Yoshi yongdengensis sp. nov., Yoshi faie sp. nov., Paramachaerodus schlosseri, and Paramachaerodus yingliangi sp. nov., are recognised in the fauna. The two derived species previously assigned to Paramachaerodus, i.e., Paramachaerodus orientalis and Paramachaerodus maximiliani, are separated from Paramachaerodus and assigned to Pontosmilus Kretzoi, 1929. P. schlosseri is resurrected as the type species of Paramachaerodus, with wide distribution in northern Eurasia during the Turolian or Baodean. Yoshi, Metailurus, and Paramachaerodus are three closely related metailurine felids but can be differentiated by a suite of craniodental traits. The great diversity of metailurines in the Xingjiawan Fauna, especially the multiple species in the same genus, suggests the start of environment change and the presence of the a mosaic environment. There exist conflicting data on the efficacy and safety of ticagrelor and clopidogrel in East Asian patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS). We performed a meta-analysis to evaluate whether ticagrelor or clopidogrel produces better outcomes for East Asian patients with ACS.

East Asia is one of the most important sources of aerosols in the world. The distribution of aerosols varies across time and space. Accurate aerosol data is crucial to identify its spatiotemporal dynamics; thus, it is of great significance to obtain and verify new aerosol data for this region. Based on the Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) data of the Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) program for 17 stations from 2011 to 2020, this study comprehensively verified the accuracy and applicability of the Multi-Angle Implementation of Atmospheric Correction (MAIAC) AOD 1 km products among different seasons, elevations, and climate zones over entire East Asia. The results showed that: (1) The overall accuracy of MAIAC AOD was high in East Asia, and the accuracy of Terra was slightly better than that of Aqua. MAIAC AOD showed significant heterogeneity among sites. MAIAC AOD performed well in areas with high vegetation cover and flat terrain, while the inversion accuracy was relatively low in areas with low vegetation cover and high terrain. (2) In general, MAIAC AOD and AERONET AOD showed good agreement in different seasons, presenting as winter > spring > autumn > summer. Yet the accuracy and consistency of Terra AOD product were better than Aqua product. (3) MAIAC AOD showed different accuracy at different elevations and climate zones. It had a high correlation and best inversion accuracy with AERONET AOD at low and medium elevations. MAIAC AOD had better inversion accuracy in the arid and warm temperate zones than that in the equatorial and cold temperate zones. (4) AOD distribution and its trend showed significant spatial differences in East Asia. The high AOD values were dominant in the Sichuan basin and the eastern plains of China, as well as in India and Bangladesh, while the relatively low AOD values were distributed in southwestern China and the areas north of 40°N. A new small-sized lynx from Longdan, Gansu Province, China, Lynx hei sp. nov. , is described in this study. The new species displays the characteristic Lynx generic traits, such as distinct buccal grooves in the upper canine, presence of an anterior groove in the upper canine, absence of upper premolar 2, and a moderately developed mastoid process, but it is markedly smaller than the previously described Lynx issiodorensis specimens from the same site and is also smaller overall than most living species, comparable to Lynx rufus in size. The new species has a relatively wide and deep zygomatic arch, similar to that of living Lynx lynx , Lynx pardinus and Lynx canadensis but wider than that of Lynx rufus. Our phylogenetic analyses suggest that Lynx hei falls within the crown group Lynx , being the sister to Lynx rufus or, less probably, a sister to Lynx issiodorensis  + three other living species of Lynx. The Plio-Pleistocene Lynx issiodorensis is supported as the ancestor of Lynx lynx , Lynx pardinus and Lynx canadensis. Our phylogenetic study suggests that Lynx diversification over the Plio-Pleistocene was achieved initially by body size differentiation, putatively forced by intraspecific competition with other carnivorans, followed by morphological divergence. A new genus and eight new species of Cimbicinae from the East Asia are described: Asicimbex Yan, Deng & Wei gen. nov., A. concavicaputus Yan & Wei sp. nov., A. dengi Yan & Wei sp. nov., A. koreanus Yan & Wei sp. nov., A. lii Yan & Wei sp. nov., A. latistriatus Yan, Deng & Wei sp. nov., A. maculotegularis Yan & Wei sp. nov., A. nanjingensis Yan & Wei sp. nov. and A. shengi Yan & Wei sp. nov. Four new combinations are proposed: A. eous (Semenov, 1935) comb. nov., A. elminus (Li & Wu, 2003) comb. nov., A. ulmusvorus (Yang, 1996) comb. nov. and A. malaisei (Gussakovskij, 1947) comb. nov., all from Agenocimbex. The 12 known species of Asicimbex are separated into two species groups. Asicimbex stands between Agenocimbex Rohwer 1910 and Cimbex Olivier 1791. The differences between Asicimbex and Cimbex, Asicimbex and Palaeocimbex are discussed in detail. Descriptions, remarks, illustrations, a key to the known species of Asicimbex and a key to genera of Cimbicinae are provided. A. malaisei is confirmed as a valid species and recorded from China for the first time, with the female described for the first time. The distribution of the genus is also briefly discussed. Maianthemum is a genus with more than 35 species from the tribe Polygonateae (Asparagaceae), widely distributed between North to Central Americas and eastern Asia with high diversity in the eastern Himalayas to the Hengduan Mountains of SW China. Although most species from SW China form a well-supported clade, phylogenetic relationships within this clade remain unclear. With a broad level of taxon sampling and an extensive character sampling from eight DNA regions, this study intends to revisit the phylogeny and biogeography of the genus to better understand the divergence patterns of species from SW China. Phylogenetic results suggested the monophyly of Maianthemum with recognition of nine strongly supported clades, but backbone relationships among these clades remained largely uncertain. For the SW China clade, individuals from the same species are grouped into different lineages. Our results revealed that the fast radiation of the SW China clade was occurred in the eastern Himalayas, followed by subsequent radiation in the Hengduan Mountains in the Pliocene. Intercontinental disjunctions of Maianthemum in the Northern Hemisphere appear to have occurred multiple times during the late Miocene to the Pliocene, likely resulted by a combination of both vicariance and long-distance dispersal events.

Aim. The study of the genus Melanotus from the collection of the Institute of Zoology of the Scientific Center of Zoology and Hydroecology of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia taking into account new taxonomic and chorological data.Material and Methods. Scientific material was identified after desktop processing and preparation of genitalia according to current data on the genus Melanotus.Results and Conclusion. We determined 21 species of the genus Melanotus in the collection from Europe, the Caucasus and Middle Asia, 12 species being recorded from the territory of Armenia. The collection of the genus Мelanotus in the Institute of Zoology includes species endemic to Armenia (M. gedeoni Mardjanyan, 2015, M. platiai Mardjanyan, 2015, M. khnzoriani Mardjanyan, 2015), to Tajikistan (M. fragilloides Dolin, 1988, M. vidualis Gurjeva, 1988) and to Iran (M. dichroides Platia & Gudenzi, 1999, M. richterae Mardjanyan, 2015). Three species, M. castanipes Paykull, 1800, M. fulvus Reitter, 1891 and M. sladkovi Dolin & Atamuradov, 1986 are recorded for the first time for Armenia. M. rustamovi Dolin & Atamuradov, 1987 is the first record for Tajikistan and M. persimilis Dolin & Latifi, 1988 for Turkmenistan.

Cotoneaster is a taxonomically and ornamentally important genus in the family Rosaceae; however, phylogenetic relationships among its species are complicated owing to insufficient morphological diagnostic characteristics and hybridization associated with polyploidy and apomixis. In this study, we sequenced the complete plastomes of seven Cotoneaster species (C. dielsianus, C. hebephyllus, C. integerrimus, C. mongolicus, C. multiflorus, C. submultiflorus, and C. tenuipes) and included the available complete plastomes in a phylogenetic analysis to determine the origin of C. wilsonii, which is endemic to Ulleung Island, Korea. Furthermore, based on 15 representative lineages within the genus, we carried out the first comparative analysis of Cotoneaster plastid genomes to gain an insight into their molecular evolution. The plastomes were highly conserved, with sizes ranging from 159,595 bp (C. tenuipes) to 160,016 bp (C. hebephyllus), and had a GC content of 36.6%. The frequency of codon usage showed similar patterns among the 15 Cotoneaster species, and 24 of the 35 protein-coding genes were predicted to undergo RNA editing. Eight of the 76 common protein-coding genes, including ccsA, matK, ndhD, ndhF, ndhK, petA, rbcL, and rpl16, were positively selected, implying their potential roles in adaptation and speciation. Of the 35 protein-coding genes, 24 genes (15 photosynthesis-related, seven self-replications, and three others) were found to harbor RNA editing sites. Furthermore, several mutation hotspots were identified, including trnG-UCC/trnR-UCU/atpA and trnT-UGU/trnL-UAA. Maximum likelihood analysis based on 57 representative plastomes of Cotoneaster and two Heteromeles plastomes as outgroups revealed two major lineages within the genus, which roughly correspond to two subgenera, Chaenopetalum and Cotoneaster. The Ulleung Island endemic, C. wilsonii, shared its most recent common ancestor with two species, C. schantungensis and C. zabelii, suggesting its potential origin from geographically close members of the subgenus Cotoneaster, section Integerrimi. The giant hyena Pachycrocuta is one of the iconic components in Eurasia Pleistocene faunas. This genus largely went extinct near the Early-Middle Pleistocene boundary in Europe, but continued to flourish till the early Middle Pleistocene in eastern Asia. However, the Middle Pleistocene Pachycrocuta in eastern Asia is only well represented in Loc. 1, 9 and 13 of Zhoukoudian, and the geographic variation is unknown. Here, a complete mandible is reported from the Middle Pleistocene loess in Luoning, Henan Province, central China. The mandible is similar to that of Pachycrocuta from Zhoukoudian in dental morphology, but is markedly larger, being the largest Pachycrocuta known (the estimated skull total length reaches 385 mm, and the estimated body mass is 150.3 kg). It also displays several unique mandibular traits, e.g., strongly curved toothrow, and elevated condyle. This suggests the presence of geographic or chronological differences between the populations of Pachycrocuta across Asia during the Middle Pleistocene. Pyrgillus mammosus, a new species from Xitou, Taiwan is described and illustrated. It is similar to P. tibellii and P. rufus but differs in its potassium hydroxide reaction of the thallus (K+ red) as a main distinguishing feature, additional chemical compounds detected by thin layer chromatography, and larger conical to hemispherical ascomata. Lasioglossum albescens (Smith, 1853) is recorded from Taiwan for the first time. The specimens were collected in the Kinmen Islands, several kilometers east of Xiamen, in Fujian, China. This species is distinguished from the other Taiwanese Lasioglossum (Ctenonomia) species by a combination of male clypeus black, mesoscutum with relatively sparse punctures between parapsidal and median lines in both sexes, and first metasomal tergum without distinct punctures and with distinct tessellation over entire surface in both sexes.

This study examines media used for information in the East Asian countries of China, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, and Singapore, using data from the World Values Survey. The sharing of Confucianculturemayleadtoauniformmediastructureacrossthesenations. Anotherpossibility is technological determinism, which would also lead to similarity across nations. However, it is possible that countries are at different stages of technology development and will eventually become more similar. An opposing notion is that differences in other values among nations predict digital media use. To examine the evidence considering these possibilities, we factor analyze each population's use of nine traditional and digital media to see how similar the structures are. What results is a three-dimensional solution for four out of five countries, except Singapore, which has a more simple two-dimensional structure. Analysts regard Singapore as the most digitally connected society, which raises the question as to whether it is higher on a technological development trajectory, to which other countries may transition. Perhaps a more simple media use structure is an adaptation to increasing information load. As well, as mobile devices have become a primary means of accessing the range of traditional and social media, it may have an expanded role in reducing media channel entropy. In terms of frequency of media use, Singapore is highest, while China is the lowest. Singapore stands out in high mobile use, and China for low Internet use. There appear to be developmental differences across the nations. Regressions on Internet use for 18 values indices find different values predictors in the East Asian countries, ruling out Confucianism as producing similar media patterns.

The slab dynamics of the subducted Izanagi-Pacific plate is still a subject of controversy and its relationship with the tectonic evolution of Eastern Asia remains not well explored. Here, we perform 3-D global convection models to investigate the slab dynamics of the Izanagi-Pacific plate beneath Eastern Asia since the Mesozoic time. We introduce a tracking technique in numerical models to explicitly distinguish the Izanagi slab and the Pacific slab during their subduction processes. We find that all subducted Izanagi slabs have completely fallen into the lower mantle until the late Cenozoic and the stagnant slabs currently observed at the mantle transition zone depth beneath Eastern Asia are entirely from the Pacific plate. We also find that multiple slab stagnation events have occurred during the subduction of the Izanagi plate in the Mesozoic time (∼150–120 Ma, 90–70 Ma) with a timescale of tens of million years. The stagnation of the subducted slabs facilitates the formation of a big mantle wedge beneath the overriding lithosphere and the time periods of the mantle wedge are consistent with the episodes of magmatic activities in Eastern Asia.

Xenocyon lycaonoides is a well-represented large canid known from the middle Early Pleistocene to Middle Pleistocene in Europe, central Asia, and Alaska, yet its fossil record in eastern Asia is extremely poor. Here we report a well-preserved palatal part of the skull of this species from Jinyuan Cave of Luotuo Hill, Puwan, Dalian of Liaoning Province, northeastern China. The new material confirms the presence of this species in eastern Asia during the early Middle Pleistocene, supporting a Holarctic distribution of this lineage during the Mid-Pleistocene climate change. The morphology of the new material suggests that the Middle Pleistocene X. lycaonoides is more derived than the late Early Pleistocene population, and is distinct from the living Lycaon pictus, and imply the different evolutionary direction from Lycaon. Our analyses support a generic distinction of the Xenocyon from Lycaon. X. lycaonoides can not be the direct ancestor of Lycaon, but is a related taxon that lived in Eurasia and North America. The lineage includes Xenocyon, and Lycaon Brookes, 1827, and partially contributes to Cynotherium Studiati, 1857, showing two independent Island specialisation events, making it one of the most successful lineages of canids ever known. Owing to the scarcity of records, the Asian evolution and migration of Diaceratherium, a large extinct genus of rhinoceros of the Teleoceratini, remain unclear. The skeleton described herein, from the early Miocene Shanwang Basin in China, is identified as Diaceratherium shanwangense, a species originally defined based on upper cheek teeth. This skeleton features a large body, short horn-bearing nasal bones, moderately retracted nasal notch at the P3 level, and the metapodials that are less massive than those in other previously identified species of Diaceratherium. Mammalian fossils reported from the Oligocene–Miocene transition of the Old World, such as Dorcatherium and Amphicyon, have indicated a migration route between Europe and Eastern Asia via Southern and South-eastern Asia, namely along the southern margins of the Tibetan Plateau. However, the fossil remains of Diaceratherium reported in this study were discovered in eastern China, which represents the second accurate record of the genus in Asia (together with its presence in Kazakhstan). Consequently, given the temporal range and geological distribution of Diaceratherium, we propose that the expansion of this genus to the eastern part of the continent occurred via a route following the northern margins of the Tibetan Plateau, which if verified, represents an alternative expansion route differing from the established routes of other mammals.

Family Clausiliidae (door-snails), which includes oviparous, embryo-retaining and viviparous species, can be a model group for studies on the evolution of reproductive modes in land snails. Yet, for understanding of evolutionary drivers leading to repeated changes of reproductive strategy, the identification of life history traits in phylogenetic lineages and geographical regions is fundamental. In this paper, we identified reproductive modes of clausiliid species endemic to Taiwan: Changphaedusa horikawai, Formosana formosensis, F. swinhoei, and an undescribed new species Formosana sp. Observations were conducted under laboratory conditions. Among Formosana species, oviparity predominated but embryo-retention was also recorded. The size of eggs and egg clutches differed between studied taxa. In contrast, C. horikawai was viviparous and delivered neonates. Anatomical examination of the fresh material allowed for unique observation of a large podocyst in embryos kept in the genital tract. This flattened structure may enable respiration or nutrient transfer between an embryo and a parent. In the regularly sampled wild population from Dawulun (N. Taiwan), gravid individuals were collected between April and November. The number of embryos reached three to nine per gravid individual. None of the species reproduced by self-fertilisation. To evaluate the ability of CMIP6 Earth System Models to simulate net biome production (NBP) changes caused by natural and man‐made forcing, the simulated NBP during the period 1901–2010 at global, hemispheric and regional scales was compared with the estimated NBP of the TRENDY ensemble. The annual NBP, globally and over the Northern Hemisphere and tropics, from the CMIP6 ensemble reflected well the TRENDY ensemble annual values from 1901 to 2010, and the correlation coefficient passed the 0.05 significance level. The annual NBP estimated by CMIP6 over the globe, Northern Hemisphere and tropics was 0.20 ± 0.46, 0.25 ± 0.34, and −0.02 ± 0.14 Pg C yr−1, respectively; while from the TRENDY ensemble it was 1.04 ± 0.41, 0.55 ± 0.24, and 0.43 ± 0.20 Pg C yr−1, respectively. The main weaknesses of the CMIP6 multi‐model ensemble simulation was the lower strength of NBP, especially at low latitudes. The simulated results showed higher soil respiration estimated by CMIP6 for these regions, especially in the Amazon Basin, than that by the TRENDY ensemble, which produced the greater NPB estimated by TRENDY. The CMIP6 ensemble exaggerated the increasing trend of carbon sinks between 30° and 60°N in the Northern Hemisphere after 1961, due to the stronger positive response of NPP (net primary production) in the high‐latitude Northern Hemisphere to global warming. The NBP during 1901–2010 could not be reproduced well by the CMIP6 ensemble in most sub‐regions, as evidenced by the failure to pass the statistical test at the 5% significance level in 70% of the sub‐regions in terms of the correlation coefficients with the TRENDY ensemble. In eastern Asia, for example, NBP was poorly estimated by the CMIP6 ensemble, as evidenced by negative correlation coefficients with the TRENDY ensemble. Euceratherium is a genus generally considered to represent an Ovibovine member of the Caprini, and up to date considered to occur only in North America. Here, we describe two species of Euceratherium discovered from the Early Pleistocene deposits in northern China, E. collinum and Euceratherium sp., the first confirmed record of Euceratherium in Eurasia and outside North America. The earlier age of Chinese Euceratherium than that of its North American counterpart indicates that Euceratherium might originate from East Asia and spread into North America later. The phylogenetic analysis based on the North American and our Euceratherium collinum materials indicates its closer relationship to Ovibos moschatus than the other bovids. Ecomorphological analysis based on the teeth and metapodials of Euceratherium sp. from Xinyaozi suggests that the Chinese species has the same paleodiet and paleohabitat preferences as those of its North American counterpart. By broadening our study from Euceratherium to its upper taxonomic group, the Quaternary Ovibovine, we found that the latter probably originated from a Kabulicornis -like form and could be divided into two groups in the Late Pliocene, "alticornis" and "depressicornis". These two groups evolved in Eurasia in the Early Pleistocene. Abstract Spread-F is known as the electron density inhomogeneous structures in F layer of ionosphere and can usually be classified as frequency spread-F (FSF) and range spread-F (RSF). Few studies have reported on the statistical characteristics of spread-F occurrences at midlatitudes in Eastern Asia, particularly the comparison of spread-F occurrences between China and Japan. In this paper, we used spread-F data recorded by ten ionosondes located between 25°N and 45°N from 1997 to 2016, to investigate the longitudinal differences in the statistical characteristics of spread-F occurrence and the probable mechanism for its occurrence at midlatitudes in Eastern Asia. Variations in the spread-F occurrences with the solar and geomagnetic activities, season and local time are presented. The main conclusions are as follows: (a) the occurrence percentage of FSF is higher than that of RSF, of which the former is anti-correlated with the solar or geomagnetic activities; (b) higher FSF occurrence percentages mostly appeared during summer, while RSF occurred more frequently in winter near 45°N latitude such as Urumqi, Changchun and Wakkanai; (c) the maximum of the FSF occurrence percentages mostly appeared between 01:00 and 02:00 LT approximately, whereas that of RSF appeared near 00:00 LT; (d) the spread-F occurrence percentages in the coastal or marine areas are higher than those in the inland region between 35°N and 45°N latitudes; however, this phenomenon is not obvious at lower latitudes; and (e) both the mean occurrences of FSF and RSF reach the minimum around 31°N latitude. These above results are helpful for understanding variations in spread-F occurrence at midlatitudes in Eastern Asia.

I propose a redefinition of the sexstrigatus group of Lasioglossum (Hemihalictus) Cockerell, 1897, including a phylogenetic analysis. This group is characterised by a combination of the following 12 characteristics: male antenna short, not attaining to metasoma, male labrum with distal process and well-developed basal elevation, male head with genal process as variation, female mesepisternum reticulate-punctate on lower area, mesepisternum without tubercle in both sexes, female metasomal terga with distinct fimbriae on posterior margin, male S8 with well-developed median process, gonobase ventral arm of male genitalia connected with each other at upper ends, gonocoxite of male genitalia smooth, gonostylus of male genitalia small and simple, bud-like, and the ventral retrorse lobe of male genitalia not attaining to gonobase. The Japanese species of the sexstrigatus group are revised. Thirteen species in total are recognised, including three new species: Lasioglossum (Hemihalictus) ikudomei sp. nov., L. (H.) spectrum sp. nov., and L. (H.) subsimplicior sp. nov. Lasioglossum (Hemihalictus) perplexans (Cockerell, 1925) is synonymised under L. (H.) kiautschouense (Strand, 1910). A key to the Japanese species is provided. Bionomical data, such as flight and flower records or habitat, are reported for some species. The distributions of all species are mapped. DNA sequences including a part of the barcode region are given for L. (H.) kiautschouense, L. (H.) ohei Hirashima & Sakagami, 1966, L. (H.) speculinum (Cockerell, 1925), L. (H. ) spectrum sp. nov., L. (H. ) subsimplicior sp. nov., and L. (H. ) taeniolellum (Vachal, 1903).

Carex sect. Confertiflorae s.l. is a medium‐sized species group (ca. 40 species) with its center of diversity in E Asia (China and Japan). According to morphological traits, the section has been proposed to split into two sections (sects. Confertiflorae sensu Ohwi and Molliculae Ohwi) up to five different ones (sects. Confertiflorae s.s., Molliculae, Dispalatae Ohwi, Ischnostachyae Ohwi, and Alliiformes Akiyama). Recent phylogenetic reconstructions showed Confertiflorae s.l. not to be monophyletic, as species traditionally considered part of it were found to belong to other clades, whereas species traditionally ascribed to other sections were nested within it. In this study, we investigated the phylogenetic structure, morphological affinities, and biogeographic history of sect. Confertiflorae s.l. We employed a taxon‐based approach to explore the morphological affinities of the species considered in sect. Confertiflorae and compared the micromorphology of the nutlets of almost all the taxa using SEM. We included 40 samples representing 31 species/subspecies of sect. Confertiflorae s.l. and used two nuclear (ETS and ITS) and three plastid (trnL‐F, matK, and rpl32‐trnLUAG) molecular markers to reconstruct the phylogeny of the group. The phylogenetic analyses confirmed the polyphyly of sect. Confertiflorae s.l., whose representatives were found within five distinct clades. From these, two clades, sect. Confertiflorae and sect. Molliculae, were found to be closely related and contained the majority of the species. The composition of the two clades agreed with the morphological structure of the group, and we confirmed an exclusive combination of features (namely color of basal sheaths, presence of bract sheath, peduncle of lowest spike, inflorescence sex distribution, shape of pistillate glume apex, and color and veins of utricle, among others) characterizing each of the two clades. The origin of the two clades was found to be in the early Pliocene; however, the majority of the diversification events within each clade took place during the Pleistocene. This illustrates that although Asia has been regarded as having little potential ecological space for Carex to diversify due to its climate stability, groups of sedges sub‐endemic from that area may have a fairly recent origin related to glaciations. The Pteris fauriei group (Pteridaceae) includes Pteris with bipinnatisect laminae and entire pinnules. The taxonomic debate is led by morphological similarity and aggravated by the wide geographic distribution and a large number of involved taxa. We collected more than 500 plants and examined related herbarium specimens. Based on the evidence of morphology, molecular phylogeny, ecology, and reproductive biology, we propose the following taxonomic and nomenclatural novelties. 1) Two new species, Pteris austrotaiwanensis Y.S.Chao from Taiwan and Pteris pseudowulaiensis Y.S.Chao from China and Taiwan, are described. 2) The occurrence of Pteris wulaiensis in Japan is confirmed. 3) Pteris fauriei var. chinensis was treated as a synonym of Pteris latipinna Y.S.Chao & W.L.Chiou. 4) Pteris fauriei var. minor Hieron. is raised as species, Pteris minor (Hieron.) • First Jurassic palynological assemblage reported from Japan, composed of 41 species. • Cheirolepidiaceae, absent in the macroflora, dominate the pollen assemblage. • Palynoflora distinct from those of SE Asia and most similar with SE Russia. • Floral composition suggests a warm climate with humid conditions. The first Jurassic palynofloral assemblage from Japan is reported from the Oxfordian Tochikubo Formation of the Soma-Nakamura Group, Fukushima Prefecture. Palynomorphs are quite diversified, with 32 genera and 41 species of lycopod and fern spores, gymnosperm pollen and freshwater algae. The composition of the assemblage is consistent with the Oxfordian age of this nonmarine formation and confirms a fluvio-lacustrine paleoenvironment, further detailing the paleovegetation reconstructed from macrofloral remains. Previous palynofloral reports of eastern Asia are reviewed and indicate that northeast Japan shares most similarities with coeval paleofloras of southeastern Russia. The Eastern Palaearctic and Oriental fauna of gall wasp inquilines (Hymenoptera: Cynipidae) has been historically understudied. Previously, ten species of Synergus Hartig (Hymenoptera: Cynipidae: Synergini), the most speciose genus of inquilines associated with Fagaceae galls worldwide, were known to occur in mainland China despite this region harbors a great number of potential fagaceous tree hosts. After the examination of all the Synergus specimens deposited at the Parasitic Hymenoptera Collection of the Agriculture and Forestry University of Zhejiang (ZAFU, China), we provide a revision of this genus in mainland China. Three new species (S. drouarti Pujade-Villar, sp. nov. , S. ponsatiae Lobato-Vila & Pujade-Villar, sp. nov. and S. rovirae Lobato-Vila & Pujade-Villar, sp. nov.) are described and illustrated. Four species (S. areolatus (Weld, 1926) comb. nov.; S. formosanus Schwéger & Melika, 2015, S. gifuensis Ashmead, 1904 and S. ishikarii Melika & Schwéger, 2015) are new records for this area. Saphonecrus reticulatus Pujade-Villar, Wang & Guo, 2014 is proposed as syn. nov. of Synergus castaneus Pujade-Villar, Bernardo & Viggiani, 2013, and Synergus changtitangi Melika & Schwéger, 2015 as syn. nov. of S. deqingensis Pujade-Villar, Wang & Chen, 2015. We provide new biological and distributional data for all the species as well as redescriptions, pictures and other corrections for those which were originally poorly characterized. Recent studies on invasive Aedes koreicus (Edwards 1917) have been conducted to elucidate the source population introduced to Europe. However, current information about the native range of Ae. koreicus is not consistent. The purpose of this study is to resolve confusion in the native distribution of Ae. koreicus by reviewing available literature from the first description of the species in its native range in 1917 to the first invasion in Europe in 2008. Aedes koreicus have been recorded in China, Japan, Korea, and eastern Russia. The 2 existing records of Ae. koreicus from Hokkaido, Japan, however, is likely due to the misidentification of 2 different morphologically similar species, Ae. koreicoides (Sasa, Kano & Hayashi 1950) and Aedes japonicus (Theobald 1901). Upon re-examination of published records, we conclude that the native distribution of Ae. koreicus is confined to continental eastern Asian regions, specifically China, Korea, and eastern Russia., (© The Author(s) 2024. The development of targeted drugs in the Eastern Asia region is going through a flourishing stage. With the continuous advancement of technology and medical research, biotechnology companies and research institutions in the region have made significant progress in cancer field. The Eastern Asian region not only actively participates in clinical trials, but is also committed to developing personalized medical plans to meet the diverse genotypes and phenotypes of patients. The governments and enterprises are increasingly valuing innovation, strengthening international cooperation, and promoting drug development. This paper summarizes the development of genetic testing technology, targeted drugs approval, ongoing promising clinical trials in the field of lung cancer and the important progress made by governments in the Eastern Asian region, and proposed key factors that will contribute to the promising future prospects in the region. Maintaining emotional well-being in late life is crucial for achieving successful and healthy aging. While previous research from Western cultures has documented that emotional well-being improves as individuals get older, previous research provided mixed evidence on the effects of age on well-being in Eastern Asian cultures. However, previous studies in East Asia do not always take into account the effects of cognitive control—an ability which has been considered as a key to enable older adults to regulate their emotions. In the current study, we tested whether cognitive control abilities interact with age in determining individuals’ well-being in 59 Japanese females (age range: 26–79; Mage = 64.95). Participants’ mental health and mental fatigue were tracked for 5 years together with their cognitive control abilities. We found that as individuals became older, they showed improved mental health and decreased mental fatigue. In addition, we found a quadratic effect of age on mental fatigue, which was further qualified by baseline cognitive control abilities. Specifically, in those who had a lower level of cognitive control abilities, mental fatigue declined until the mid-60s, at which point it started increasing (a U-shape effect). In contrast, in those who had a higher level of cognitive control ability, mental fatigue showed a steady decrease with age even after their mid-60s. These results suggest that whether advancing age is associated with positive vs. negative changes in well-being depends on cognitive control abilities, and that preserved cognitive control is a key to maintain well-being in late life.

Abstract Background Refugial populations in Quaternary glaciations are critical to understanding the evolutionary history and climatic interactions of many extant species. Compared with the well-studied areas of Europe and Northern America, refugia of species in eastern Asia remain largely unknown. Here, we investigated the phylogeographic history of a globally important insect pest, the oriental fruit moth Grapholita molesta, in its native range of China. Results Genetic structure analyses unveiled three distinct groups and a set of populations with admixture. Approximate Bayesian Computation (ABC) analyses support range expansion of this moth from southwest groups of Yunnan and Sichuan to northern and eastern China. A set of admixed populations was found around these two ancestral groups. This pattern of genetic structure points to two refugia located in the Yunnan region and Sichuan Basin. The split of the two refugia was dated to 329.2 thousand years ago in the penultimate glacial period. One of the lineages was exclusively found around the Sichuan Basin, indicating the formation of endemic populations in this refugium. Ecological niche model analysis suggested a shrinking distribution from the LIG period to the MID period in the Sichuan lineage but a wide and stable distribution in the other lineage. Conclusions Our results for the first time suggest that Yunnan and Sichuan jointly served as two large-scale refugia in eastern Asia in Quaternary glaciations, helping to maintain genetic diversity overall.
