The component structure of executive functioning (EF) has been shown to change across development. Empirical research examining this in Sub‐Saharan Africa is limited. We report the development of EF component structure with a large sample of Ghanaian children (n = 2,979) followed longitudinally from ages 3 through 12 across six waves. Existing literature suggests unitary models of EF (components loading onto a single factor) early in childhood, with development across childhood and into adolescence resulting in a more diversified EF model (components loading onto two‐ or three‐factors). To test these developmental differences, participants completed EF batteries that measured EF components: working memory, short‐term memory, inhibition, and cognitive flexibility/shifting. We employed confirmatory factor analysis to test factor models in 3‐ to 4‐year‐olds, 5‐ to 6‐year‐olds, 7‐ to 9‐year‐olds, and 10‐ to 12‐year‐olds. Contrary to existing literature, a two‐factor EF model best explained EF performance as early as 3–4 years of age. Findings suggest that diversification of EF components may emerge earlier in childhood than expected in some contexts, questioning the universality in the timing of unification and diversification of EF structure. Male postsmolt maturation ("jacking") is undesired in Atlantic salmon aquaculture due to economic and welfare impacts. Unfortunately, incidence of jacking has increased linked to intensive rearing conditions. This study subjected 1000 salmon (52.1 ± 5.2 g) to one of two temperatures (15, 12.5°C) and one of two photoperiods (constant light‐LL, a 5‐week LD12:12 winter signal regime‐WS) to assess their effects on spermatogenesis regulation. Indicators included testis histology images, mRNA transcription of gonadotropin receptors for follicle‐stimulating hormone (fshr) and luteinizing hormone (lhr), and of factors regulating spermatogenesis like anti‐Müllerian hormone (amh), gonadal‐soma‐derived factors 1 and 2 (gsdf1 and gsdf2), and insulin‐like growth factor‐3 (igf3). High temperature (15°C) induced early testis development processes irrespective of photoperiod, evidenced by presence of type B spermatogonia before clear increases in testis size or any transcriptional changes. The winter signal at 15°C caused a synchronized onset of spermatogenesis not present under constant light. This was evidenced by a pronounced downregulation of the spermatogenesis‐inhibiting factor amh and a clear upregulation in the stimulating factor igf3. Consequently, combining high temperatures with winter signal regimes pose risk; high temperature can stimulate early cellular/endocrine processes of spermatogenesis, which can later be synchronized in the population by an increase in daylength. Early flowering is a major contributing factor to early crop maturation and is a prerequisite for the expansion of crop production to high latitudes with short growing seasons as well as for annual double/triple cropping systems. Nitrogen is the mineral element most limiting to plant growth and, consequently, also to crop yield. Nitrogen also plays a role in the regulation of flowering time. Here, we show that OsNia3 is a member of the rice nitrate reductase (NR) gene family. OsNia3 was found to be expressed in stem nodes of rice, while the loss of its function led to a reduction in plant height mainly due to disrupted nitrate metabolism at the site of OsNia3 expression. The expression levels of genes related to nitrate transport, nitrate assimilation, and ammonium assimilation, such as OsNia1, OsNRT2.3A, and OsNGS1, increased in the leaves of osnia3 mutant plants, concomitant with an increase in the activity of the nitrogen metabolism pathway. The ammonium and amino acid contents in the leaves also increased in the osnia3 mutant, as did the chlorophyll content. Phenotypic analysis showed that the osnia3 mutant exhibited a shorter growth period compared with wild-type plants; nevertheless, yield was not significantly affected in mutant plants. The deletion of the OsNia3 gene led to the upregulation of genes related to the photoperiod regulation network (OsGI, OsHd1, and OsHd3a), which likely promoted early flowering. These results indicated that OsNia3 is involved in the floral inhibition pathway (OsGI-OsHd1-OsHd3a) in rice under long-day conditions. Research has shown that adolescents – particularly girls – who mature relatively early often experience more internalizing problems. This effect is thought to be partially driven by psychosocial mechanisms, but previous research based relative pubertal maturation on complete samples or population standards, instead of considering the adolescents' direct peer environment. In the current study the level of adolescents' pubertal development was assessed relative to their classmates in order to examine relative pubertal maturation. The effects of adolescents' relative pubertal status, and their perceived popularity, on symptoms of social anxiety and depression in adolescents were studied. All analyses were also performed for absolute pubertal maturation. Participants were 397 young adolescents (Mage = 13.06, SD = 0.36, 49.9% girls) at timepoint 1, and 307 (Mage = 14.08, SD = 0.36, 50.5% girls) at timepoint 2. A significant positive relationship was found between relative pubertal timing and symptoms of depression for girls but not boys. Social anxiety symptoms were not significantly related to relative pubertal timing in either sex. Relative pubertal maturation had no effect on change in or persistence of depressive and social anxiety symptoms one year later. The high fishing pressure may cause species evolutionary changes toward smaller maturation sizes. In this context, the fishing practices of mackerel scad, Decapterus macarellus (Cuvier, 1833), in tropical eastern Indonesia provide an excellent opportunity to examine this hypothesis. Two distinct fishing grounds, the Sulawesi Sea and Maluku Sea, were selected to explore this phenomenon. Samples of D. macarellus caught by purse seine fishers operating were sourced from the two fishing grounds. Analysing the total length and maturity stage of each D. macarellus specimen from the two stocks were made to estimate key parameters such as the length at first maturity (Lm) and total mortality (Z). The results revealed that total mortality, used as an indicator of fishing pressure, was higher in the Maluku Sea (5.3 year-1) than in the Sulawesi Sea (3.7 year-1) and other areas. Additionally, the Lm of D. macarellus in the Maluku Sea was remarkably lower (22.9 cm) than in the Sulawesi Sea (23.9 cm), which can be attributed to the higher fishing pressure. These findings support the fisheries-induced evolution hypothesis, particularly within Indonesian tropical fish stocks and their respective regions, adding new growing evidence that fishing pressure affects fish reproductive biology. Abstract Background Cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) is an important multiuse crop grown for economic and energy purposes. Its vegetative organs are storage roots, in which the main storage material is starch. The accumulation characteristics of starch in cassava roots can directly affect the yield, starch content and maturation of cassava storage roots. In this study, we used a cassava sexual tetraploid (ST), which showed early maturation heterosis in previous work, as the main test material. We analyzed the sucrose metabolism and starch accumulation characteristics of the ST and its parents from the leaf “source” to the storage root “sink” during different developmental stages and explored the regulatory mechanisms of ST storage root early maturation by combining the transcriptome data of the storage roots during the expansion period. Results The results showed that the trends in sucrose, glucose and fructose contents in the ST leaves were similar to those of the two parents during different stages of development, but the trends in the ST storage roots were significantly different from those of their parents, which showed high sucrose utilization rates during the early stage of development and decreased utilization capacity in the late developmental stage. Transcriptome data showed that the genes that were expressed differentially between ST and its parents were mainly involved in the degradation and utilization of sucrose in the storage roots, and four key enzyme genes were significantly upregulated (Invertase MeNINV8/MeVINV3, Sucrose synthase MeSuSy2, Hexokinase MeHXK2), while the expressions of key enzyme genes involved in starch synthesis were not significantly different. Conclusions The results revealed that the pattern of sucrose degradation and utilization in the cassava ST was different from that of its parents and promoted early maturation in its tuberous roots. Starch accumulation in the ST from sucrose mainly occurred during the early expansion stage of the storage roots, and the starch content during this period was higher than that of both parents, mainly due to the regulation of invertase and hexokinase activities during sucrose metabolism. This study provides a basis for further genetic improvements to cassava traits and for breeding varieties that mature early and are adapted well to provide starch supply requirements.

Summary: Cotton's fundamental requirements for long periods of growth and specific seasonal temperatures limit the global arable areas that can be utilized to cultivate cotton. This constraint can be alleviated by breeding for early‐maturing varieties. By delaying the sowing dates without impacting the boll‐opening time, early‐maturing varieties not only mitigate the yield losses brought on by unfavorable weathers in early spring and late autumn but also help reducing the competition between cotton and other crops for arable land, thereby optimizing the cropping system. This review presents studies and breeding efforts for early‐maturing cotton, which efficiently pyramid early maturity, high‐quality, multiresistance traits, and suitable plant architecture by leveraging pleiotropic genes. Attempts are also made to summarize our current understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying early maturation, which involves many pathways such as epigenetic, circadian clock, and hormone signaling pathways. The cryoresistance of sperm is a significant concern issue in conservation and aquaculture. The nutrition of broodstock fish affects the quality of gametes. This study aimed to assess the impact of four diets on the quality of fresh and cryopreserved sperm of sexually mature salmon parr during spermatogenesis. Two dietary factors were modulated: lipid intake (12% and 20%) and n-3 essential fatty acid composition (DHA and ALA). No significant difference in parr growth rate or sperm concentration following the feeding period was observed. Viability and mitochondrial membrane potential of fresh sperm were also unaffected. However, fresh sperm motility was significantly higher in fish fed the 20% ALA diet compared to those fed the 12% DHA diet (p = 0.001). Cryopreservation reduced viability, motility, curvilinear velocity (VCL), and average path velocity (VAP), and increased linearity, regardless of the diet (p < 0.01). However, cryopreserved spermatozoa from parr fed diets enriched with DHA and containing 20% lipids showed a higher percentage of viability compared to spermatozoa from fish fed diets containing 12% lipids (p = 0.044). The study found that mitochondrial membrane potential, motility, VCL, and VAP was higher and that linearity was lower in salmon fed diets with higher levels of lipid and plant-based n-3 fatty acids compared to those fed 12% lipid diets, regardless of the n-3 fatty acid composition. The aim of this review is to check the possibilities and circumstances regarding how to create a high-density Persian walnut orchard. Increasing yields, decreasing tree size, limiting juveniles, and lowering total costs are the most important objectives of breeders and horticulturists. Reducing the size of walnut trees can increase yield. Breeding programs in several countries have led to the production of walnut dwarf rootstocks. For example, Daixiang and Daihui in China, Alvand in Iran, and Fernette in France are all novel-bred dwarfing Persian walnut rootstocks. These precocious walnuts are considered to be a rare resource in the study of precociousness as well as juvenile and flowering mechanisms. Moreover, they play a potential role in breeding and modifying cultivars by genetic engineering, through walnut ameliorating programs. Objective: To develop genomic and phenotypic indices for beef cattle selection that afford progeny with reduced birth weight and fattening period. The indices should also allow regulating total weight gain during the fattening period and avoid marked increases of inbreeding., Methods: Whether addition of constraint on total weight gain to constraints on body weight gain at up to four specific time points during the fattening process was effective for the weight gain until the end of the fattening period was examined in two selection indices with the selection trait being a phenotypic or a genomic breeding value random regression coefficient., Results: Both indices afforded cattle with desired weight gains at specific time points and desired total weight gains. One cycle of index-based selection made it possible to shorten the fattening period two weeks compared with that before selection while maintaining the same final fattening weight as before selection. The impact of constraining total weight gain was smallest when the number of weight gain constraints at specific time points was three or four. However, constraining total weight gain was necessary to avoid poor total weight gain when the number of weight gain constraints at specific time points was only one or two., Conclusion: The developed indices make it possible to regulate total weight gain during the fattening process and to achieve desired weight gains at specific time points. Importantly, the indices bring about genetic improvement without an excessive increase of inbreeding. Thus, we expect that these indices will contribute to sustainable genetic improvement in cattle while maintaining genetic diversity.

Early maturation is an important objective in wheat breeding programs that could facilitate multiple-cropping systems, decrease disaster- and disease-related losses, ensure stable wheat production, and increase economic benefits. Exploitation of novel germplasm from wild relatives of wheat is an effective means of breeding for early maturity. Psathyrostachys huashanica Keng f. ex P. C. KUO (2 n =2 x =14, NsNs) is a promising source of useful genes for wheat genetic improvement. In this study, we characterized a novel wheat- P. huashanica line, DT23, derived from distant hybridization between common wheat and P. huashanica. Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) and sequential genomic in situ hybridization (GISH) analyses indicated that DT23 is a stable wheat- P. huashanica ditelosomic addition line. FISH painting and PCR-based landmark unique gene markers analyses further revealed that DT23 is a wheat- P. huashanica 7Ns ditelosomic addition line. Observation of spike differentiation and the growth period revealed that DT23 exhibited earlier maturation than the wheat parents. This is the first report of new earliness per se (Eps) gene(s) probably associated with a group 7 chromosome of P. huashanica. Based on specific locus-amplified fragment sequencing technology, 45 new specific molecular markers and 19 specific FISH probes were developed for the P. huashanica 7Ns chromosome. Marker validation analyses revealed that two specific markers distinguished the Ns genome chromosomes of P. huashanica and the chromosomes of other wheat-related species. These newly developed FISH probes specifically detected Ns genome chromosomes of P. huashanica in the wheat background. The DT23 line will be useful for breeding early maturing wheat. The specific markers and FISH probes developed in this study can be used to detect and trace P. huashanica chromosomes and chromosomal segments carrying elite genes in diverse materials. Context: A close link between body mass index (BMI) and female pubertal onset is well established. However, observations in boys remain inconclusive.Objective: We aim to determine whether BMI as well as total and central adiposity in prepubertal Chilean boys is associated with pubertal timing.Methods: We performed a longitudinal study in which 494 boys from the Growth and Obesity Chilean Cohort Study were followed starting from birth and throughout puberty, including 5 prepubertal visits. The main outcome measures included anthropometric data and semi-annual clinical pubertal staging. The association between BMI, obesity (BMI standard deviation score [SDS] ≥ 2) and central adiposity (waist circumference ≥ 90th centile) with precocious puberty and age at gonadarche was analyzed using survival- and logistic regression models.Results: BMI, prevalence of total obesity, and central obesity increased throughout childhood. Among the study population, 45 boys entered puberty before the age of 9 years (9.1%). Obesity at 4 to 7 years and childhood mean BMI SDS were significantly associated with precocious gonadarche. Mean age at testicular enlargement (≥4 mL), was 11.0 years (95% CI, 10.9-11.1) and was inversely associated with BMI SDS, waist circumference, and percentage fat mass in almost all prepubertal visits. Age at testicular enlargement in normal weight, overweight, and obese boys was 11.2 (11.0-11.3), 10.9 (10.6-11.1) and 10.7 (10.4-11.1) years, respectively.Conclusion: Our observation supports the association of BMI SDS and obesity with pubertal timing and precocious gonadarche in boys, respectively. The article considers the assessment results of winter triticale on the length of vegetation period on the experimental plots of the Tambov Research Institute of Agriculture in the soil- climatic conditions of the North-East of the Central Black Earth Zone (Chernozemie). During the five years of study (2009-2013) the length of the vegetation period was 307 days on average. According to the trait all variety samples were divided into the groups of maturity: early maturing (ripening), middle maturing and later maturing. The variety samples grown in theWest Europeand in the Near-abroad countries (former Soviet republics) have been presented in the collection by the early maturing varieties with the vegetation period of 305 days. The most varieties of winter triticale, developed inRussia, belong to the middle maturing and later maturing groups with the vegetation period of 307 days. The samples from Dagestan andBashkiriawere later maturing with the vegetation period of 310 days. There have been selected 34 early maturing varieties of winter triticale with the vegetation period of 302-304 days, among which there were 17 very early maturing varieties. They have been analyzed according to the heading stage. In the years with different climatic conditions these varieties came into their heading stage a bit earlier (the third decade of May) than the standard and other varieties of the collection, that confirmed their early maturation. We suggest to use the varieties ‘Bogo’, ‘Presto’, ‘RAH121/94’, ‘Pinokio’, ‘Tornado’ from Poland; ‘Maara’, ‘Modul’, ‘Sokol’ form Buelorus; ‘Suvenir’ form Ukraine; ‘Sargau’, ‘Kentavr’, ‘Vodoley’, ‘Legion’, ‘Zimogor’, ‘Bard’, ‘Vokaliz’, ‘Razgar’ form Russia with the vegetation period of 302-303 days and the heading stage in the third decade of May as the efficient sources for the development of early maturing varieties of winter triticale in the conditions of the North-East of the Central Black Earth Zone (Chernozemie).

Plant height plays an important role in the potential and stability of crop yields and represents one of the most important agronomic traits of wheat. Although more than 30 dwarfing genes have been identified in wheat, only a few are used in wheat breeding, which has narrowed the genetic basis of newly developed varieties. Therefore, continually identifying new dwarfing genes is required to produce improved wheat cultivars. TA001 is a new germplasm line marked by reduced plant height and early maturation, and it was derived from a hybridization between the common wheat Yannong 15 and the Aegilops ventricosa × Aegilops cylindrica amphiploid SDAU18. In this study, cytological observations, agronomic trait examinations, genomic in situ hybridization (GISH), multicolor genomic in situ hybridization (mc-GISH), multicolor fluorescence in situ hybridization (mc-FISH), SSR analysis and seed storage protein electrophoresis were combined to determine the cytological stability, main agronomic traits, chromosomal constituents and seed storage protein subunits of TA001. Twenty-one bivalents were observed in most of the pollen mother cells at metaphase I (PMCs MI) in TA001, which housed 42 chromosomes, and the chromosomes in most pollen mother cells at anaphase I (PMCs AI) displayed 21/21 segregation. Twenty bivalents plus two univalents were simultaneously observed in most of the PMCs MI of the hybrid F1 between TA001 and Yannong 15. TA001 possessed all chromosomes from genomes A, B and D except for chromosome 7B, which was replaced by one pair of N-genome chromosomes from Aegilops ventricosa. Several pairs of chromosomes in TA001 exhibited different FISH patterns from the equivalent chromosomes in Yannong 15. TA001 housed alien genetic materials from Aegilops ventricosa and Aegilops cylindrica and possessed new glutenin and gliadin subunits specific to SDAU18, as revealed by molecular marker analysis and protein electrophoresis respectively.

Abstract Wild Atlantic salmon populations show heritable variation in the proportion of fish that mature early, as grilse, after one winter at sea. Grilse are undesirable in aquaculture, and in hatchery-supported recreational fisheries, but their frequency could be reduced using marker-assisted selection. SNP markers near vgll3 on Ssa 25 are associated with 30–40% of the variation in early maturity in European (EU) Atlantic salmon. Our goal was to determine whether this association occurred in a major North America (NA) aquaculture strain from the Saint John River (SJR). Grilse reared entirely in freshwater tanks were heavier and longer two years post-hatching than normally-maturing post-smolts of the same sex. We first genotyped a large sample from a single year-class (YC-80) on a custom 80 SNP assay that included the four SNPs near vgll3. When no associations were found, our study was extended to include a genome-wide analysis (GWA) of another year-class using a custom 50 K SNP chip (YC-50 K). The GWA found no associations on Ssa 25 but did detect a SNP with experiment-wide significance on its homeolog, Ssa 21. The new SNP explained 6% of the variance in grilsing. Its association was not a by-product of the greater weights and lengths of grilse. GWA showed that the top SNP for weight was on Ssa 01/23. The early-maturing allele at vgll3 had a higher frequency of homozygotes in European populations than in the North American populations. We conclude that differences in the genetic architecture of traits between highly diverged populations, such as these from different continents, can require re-estimation of marker-trait relationships. The garden pea (Pisum sativum L.) is a legume crop of immense economic value. Extensive breeding has led to the emergence of numerous pea varieties, of which some are distinguished by accelerated development in various stages of ontogenesis. One such trait is rapid seed maturation, which, despite novel insights into the genetic control of seed development in legumes, remains poorly studied. This article presents an attempt to dissect mechanisms of early maturation in the pea line Sprint-2 by means of whole transcriptome RNA sequencing in two developmental stages. By using a de novo assembly approach, we have obtained a reference transcriptome of 25,756 non-redundant entries expressed in pea seeds at either 10 or 20 days after pollination. Differential expression in Sprint-2 seeds has affected 13,056 transcripts. A comparison of the two pea lines with a common maturation rate demonstrates that while at 10 days after pollination, Sprint-2 seeds show development retardation linked to intensive photosynthesis, morphogenesis, and cell division, and those at 20 days show a rapid onset of desiccation marked by the cessation of translation and cell anabolism and accumulation of dehydration-protective and -storage moieties. Further inspection of certain transcript functional categories, including the chromatin constituent, transcription regulation, protein turnover, and hormonal regulation, has revealed transcriptomic trends unique to specific stages and cultivars. Among other remarkable features, Sprint-2 demonstrated an enhanced expression of transposable element-associated open reading frames and an altered expression of major maturation regulators and DNA methyltransferase genes. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first comparative transcriptomic study in which the issue of the seed maturation rate is addressed.

Background: Milk composition is complex and includes numerous components essential for offspring growth and development. In addition to the high abundance of miR-30b microRNA, milk produced by the transgenic mouse model of miR-30b-mammary deregulation displays a significantly altered fatty acid profile. Moreover, wild-type adopted pups fed miR-30b milk present an early growth defect., Objective: This study aimed to investigate the consequences of miR-30b milk feeding on the duodenal development of wild-type neonates, a prime target of suckled milk, along with comprehensive milk phenotyping., Methods: The duodenums of wild-type pups fed miR-30b milk were extensively characterized at postnatal day (PND)-5, PND-6, and PND-15 using histological, transcriptomic, proteomic, and duodenal permeability analyses and compared with those of pups fed wild-type milk. Milk of miR-30b foster dams collected at mid-lactation was extensively analyzed using proteomic, metabolomic, and lipidomic approaches and hormonal immunoassays., Results: At PND-5, wild-type pups fed miR-30b milk showed maturation of their duodenum with 1.5-fold (P < 0.05) and 1.3-fold (P < 0.10) increased expression of Claudin-3 and Claudin-4, respectively, and changes in 8 duodenal proteins (P < 0.10), with an earlier reduction in paracellular and transcellular permeability (183 ng/mL fluorescein sulfonic acid [FSA] and 12 ng/mL horseradish peroxidase [HRP], respectively, compared with 5700 ng/mL FSA and 90 ng/mL HRP in wild-type; P < 0.001). Compared with wild-type milk, miR-30b milk displayed an increase in total lipid (219 g/L compared with 151 g/L; P < 0.05), ceramide (17.6 μM compared with 6.9 μM; P < 0.05), and sphingomyelin concentrations (163.7 μM compared with 76.3 μM; P < 0.05); overexpression of 9 proteins involved in the gut barrier (P < 0.1); and higher insulin and leptin concentrations (1.88 ng/mL and 2.04 ng/mL, respectively, compared with 0.79 ng/mL and 1.06 ng/mL; P < 0.01)., Conclusions: miR-30b milk displays significant changes in bioactive components associated with neonatal duodenal integrity and maturation, which could be involved in the earlier intestinal closure phenotype of the wild-type pups associated with a lower growth rate., (Copyright © 2023 The Authors. In Brazil, yerba mate is consumed after processing; however, in Chile and Uruguay, the consumers prefer the cured product, which acquires a yellow color. For that yerba-mate is stored for a period of six months to one year, which increases the cost of the final product for the overseas market. This study evaluated the effect of humidity and temperature in maturation chamber on the time required for the product to get this characteristic. The changes in the color, pH, moisture and water activity were evaluated during the time of storage in different conditions of temperature and humidity. Yerba-mate subjected to higher temperature and humidity showed nearest color of the product submitted to natural storage. The loss of green color was related to the reduction in pH and increase in the moisture of the samples. The higher humidity allowed the mate to reach conditions near to market requirements abroad in approximately 60 days of maturation.

With the recent finding that the vestigial-like family member 3 ( Vgll3 ) gene is associated with early maturation, we decided to re-examine previously reported quantitative trait loci (QTL) and genome wide association (GWA) studies, involved with early maturation, to see if Vgll3 was the source of any of these associations. Using a TaqMan assay for Vgll3 , we were able to verify that a prominent QTL for early maturation was indeed associated with Vgll3 . Next, we used Vgll3 genotypes as a cofactor to re-examine for any additional QTLs or GWAs. Several were found at the chromosome-wide significance level. By examining interacting partners of Vgll3 from other organisms, we identified several candidate genes that may interact with Vgll3 in Atlantic salmon and effect early maturation. The location of these genes were determined from the genome sequence, while markers near QTL were examined to see if they were near any Vgll3 interacting genes. In this way, we identified TEAD3 as a putative gene also influencing early maturation in Atlantic salmon. A TaqMan assay was used to genotype TEAD3 . Este estudo teve como objetivos descrever o ciclo gametogênico e o comportamento reprodutivo da população de Iphigenia brasiliana (Lamarck,1818) no estuário do rio Subaé, Baía de Todos os Santos, Bahia. Os bivalves foram coletados de novembro de 2001 a novembro de 2002. Um total de 244 espécimes foi medido (eixo anteroposterior), eviscerado, fixado, desidratado e incluído em parafina. O estudo histológico das gônadas foi realizado através de cortes seriados do tecido gonadal, de 5 mm de espessura, e corados pela HE. O tamanho médio mínimo da primeira maturação sexual (Lpm) foi estimado a partir da distribuição das frequências relativas de jovens e adultos, por classe de comprimento dos indivíduos. As frequências relativas dos sexos em cada estádio de desenvolvimento foram consideradas conjuntamente para a análise do comportamento reprodutivo da população, e, em separado, para avaliar a sincronia do ciclo sexual entre machos e fêmeas. Foi observada uma variação de tamanhos entre 9,1 e 66,6 mm, com comprimento médio de 50,2 mm. O estudo não demonstrou diferença significativa entre os tamanhos de machos e fêmeas. Não foi possível observar a diferenciação de sexos em 2,1% dos indivíduos analisados. 51,6% dos indivíduos foram identificados como machos (M) e 46,3% como fêmeas (F), não sendo constatadas diferenças significativas entre o número médio de machos e fêmeas, resultando numa proporção de M:F de 1,1:1. O Lpm foi estimado em 11,4 mm, mas apenas ao alcançarem comprimento médio de 34,4 mm, todos os indivíduos foram considerados adultos. Foram caracterizados quatro estádios de evolução do desenvolvimento gonadal em fêmeas e machos. A análise dos diferentes estádios permitiu a observação dos fenômenos de atresia e inversão sexual em fêmeas. O ciclo reprodutivo apresentou eliminação contínua de gametas, com maiores intensidades reprodutivas nos meses de novembro de 2001 a abril de 2002 e, também, no mês de outubro de 2002.This study aimed to describe the gametogenic cycle and reproductive behavior of the population of Iphigenia brasiliana (Lamarck, 1818) in the estuary of the Subaé river, Todos os Santos Bay, Bahia. The bivalves were collected from November 2001 to November 2002. A total of 244 specimens was measured (anteroposterior axis), gutted, fixed, dehydrated and embedded in paraffin. The histology of the gonads was performed by 5 mm thick serial sections of gonadal tissue, and stained with HE. The length at the beginning of gonadal maturation (Lpm) was estimated from the distribution of the relative frequencies of youth and adults, by length class of individuals. The relative frequencies of the sexes at each stage of development were considered together for the analysis of the reproductive behavior of the population, and, separately, to assess the sexual cycle synchrony between males and females. We observed a variation of sizes between 9.1 and 66.6 mm, with a mean length of 50.2 mm. The study showed no significant difference between the sizes of males and females. There was no evidence of gender differentiation in 2.1% of subjects analyzed. 51.6% of subjects were identified as males (M) and 46.3% as females (F), without significant differences among average number of male and female, resulting in the proportion of M:F ratio of 1,1:1. Lpm was estimated at 11.4 mm, but only to achieve average length of 34.4 mm, all subjects were considered adults. We characterized four stages of evolution of gonadal development in females and males. Analysis of different stages allowed the observation of the atresia phenomena and sex reversal in females. The reproductive cycle presents continuous elimination of gametes, with higher reproductive intensities in the months of November 2001 to April 2002 and also in October 2002.

Traditional genetic markers based on allozyme variation had indicated that in Atlantic salmon the genetic variation found for the locus coding for mMEP-2* could be adaptive, with the variation being related to river water temperature, growth, and maturation. More recently, SNP panels used to search for genes related to maturation in Atlantic salmon identified several genes, including the vgll3 gene related to early maturation. However, none of the analyses performed found an association between maturation and the already known locus coding for mMEP-2*. Recently, a method has been developed to characterize the different alleles of the locus coding for mMEP-2* using molecular techniques. In this work we use this method to study the salmon population of the Bidasoa River, located in the Iberian Peninsula, which is the limit of distribution of the species. We found a relationship between the presence of SNP G, equivalent to the 125* allele, and early maturation of Atlantic salmon in both males and females. It is possible that the relationship between the different alleles of this locus and maturation is not direct but is produced by differential growth during the juvenile and/or adult phase. It is also plausible that this association is exclusive to the salmon populations of the Iberian Peninsula. • In the past, numerous studies have found associations between the locus coding for mMEP-2* and adaptive variation in Atlantic salmon. • Recently, the mutation (A/G SNP) responsible for the variation of this locus has been identified. • In the Bidasoa river salmon with the GG and GA genotypes increased the log of early maturing relative to the AA genotype by 4.7 and 1.7 respectively.
