The gender gap in job burnout research indicates that women score higher on job burnout. However, this gender difference has rarely been studied from developmental perspectives. Moreover, the underlying gender differences in job resources—driven by gendered socialization in early career years—have been under-investigated. The present study examined the trajectory of early career job burnout, gender differences in job burnout development, and gendered job resources. Results from latent growth curve modeling (N = 619, 65.3% women, ages 26–34), using the longitudinal data from three time points (2013–2020), showed that the trajectory of job burnout was decreasing in early career years, and this pattern did not vary between genders. As expected, women scored higher in job burnout. Gender differences in job resources were found: parenthood status only prevented job burnout for women, whereas income and partner support only prevented job burnout for men. Belongingness to the workplace prevented job burnout for both genders. Findings suggest that young adults make use of job resources from their socialization in early career years and experience a decreasing pattern of job burnout. This study provides new evidence of the gender wage gap among recent university graduates at different stages of their early career. Using a unique administrative dataset from Russia, we estimate the gender wage gap at means and across wage distribution for a cohort of 2018 university graduates during the first 4 years after graduation. We explore the contribution of educational and job factors to the explanation of the gap. Although a substantial gap of 14% is already present at labour market entry, it is two times smaller compared to the gap for the overall working population. Eighty five percent of the entry wage gap can be explained with differences in fields of study, work experience, and job characteristics. More than 4 years after graduation, the gender wage gap experiences a dramatic increase, reaching 26%. Only 28% of the resulting gap can be explained by the observed characteristics, including industrial and occupational segregation. The size of the gap varies drastically in different parts of the wage distribution, suggesting the existence of a strong glass ceiling effect from the very beginning of graduate careers. The rapidly expanding early career gender wage gap with a growing unexplained component suggests that education policies may have limited ability to promote gender equality in the labour market. Aim: To explore the career decisions and aspirations of early‐career registered nurses in New Brunswick, Canada. Design: A qualitative study using an interpretive description approach was conducted. Methods: Semi‐structured one‐on‐one interviews were conducted with a purposive sample of nurses (n = 22) currently working in New Brunswick, Canada, with up to 5 years of experience from February to April 2022. Results: Participants described diverse career paths and aspirations. Personal factors affecting these included the desire for meaningful work, career satisfaction, work‐life balance, spending time with family, working in a preferred location, and finances. Professionally, working conditions were the dominant factor influencing early‐career nurses' career decisions and aspirations. Participants described how short staffing, safety, support, and scheduling influenced their day‐to‐day work, mental and physical health, job and career satisfaction, and intent to leave. Conclusion: The findings highlighted the abundant and diverse career opportunities available to nurses early in their careers. Early‐career nurses are interested in finding nursing positions with a high degree of person‐job fit and value opportunities for ongoing professional education and growth. Impact: This study in New Brunswick, Canada, explores early‐career nurses' career decisions and aspirations during nursing shortages and the pandemic, emphasizing the importance of person‐job fit. Counselling Psychologists (CPs) constitute a considerable proportion of psychologists in South Africa (SA), yet empirical knowledge on this workforce remains limited. Furthermore, changes within this workforce overtime have not been thoroughly examined. This study compares early career (<10 years) and established (>10 years) CPs relating to demographic characteristics, work settings, professional roles and activities, career satisfaction, and perspectives on efforts to demarcate the practice of CPs in SA. A total of 512 survey responses were analysed, with 39% representing early career CPs and 61% representing established CPs. Findings reveal significant differences between early career and established CPs across several domains, including age, race, geographic location, highest professional degree, languages spoken; current job-seeking status; satisfaction with income, employment opportunities, work-life balance and primary work settings; likelihood of emigration; and supervision frequency and format. Overall, the results suggest movement towards transformation within the CP profession in SA. Nevertheless, systemic issues continue to hinder the optimal utilisation and equitable distribution of CPs within the country. Advocacy and ongoing workforce analysis is thus essential to support, retain, and effectively utilise CPs as a valuable resource, especially in light of the ongoing debates surrounding the implementation of the National Health Insurance (NHI) system in SA. Abstract Background There is increasing demand for professional practice placement opportunities, supported by health professional educators, to enable future health workforce development. Early career health professionals performing the educator role is one strategy that can help meet this demand. However, there is a need to consider how best to prepare and support early career health professionals to become educators. This study aimed to explore the experiences and perspectives of early career occupational therapy clinical educators including their preparation and support needs. Methods Semi-structured interviews were completed with ten early career occupational therapists who had supervised their first or second student on a professional practice placement. The participants worked within an Australian tertiary hospital and health service in various clinical settings. Interviews were completed within six weeks of placement completion and lasted approximately one hour. They were recorded and transcribed verbatim and reflexive inductive thematic analysis was undertaken to identify key themes. Results Ten occupational therapists, who had been working for an average of two years and two months, consented to participate. Initially, participants expressed mixed emotions about taking on the clinical educator role. They then described their adjustment to the role responsibilities, challenges encountered, and the development of the educator-student relationship. Participants found that the experience of supervising a student enhanced their educator, clinical, and professional skills and confidence. The important support elements of tailored educator preparation, placement design, and timely access to relevant resources and experienced staff were identified. Conclusions This study demonstrated how early career health professionals can possess desirable educator attributes, such as enthusiasm for taking on the role and cultivating collaborative learning relationships with their students. The experience of being an educator also presents a professional development opportunity for early career health professionals. Insights gained about the specific preparation and support needs of early career clinical educators warrant consideration by organisations and staff involved in the provision of student professional practice placements. Overall, this study’s findings signify the importance of engaging and investing in early career health professionals to support student clinical education and to develop our current and future healthcare workforce.

In an increasingly competitive world, master’s degrees are becoming the new common educational currency, leading to a markable increase in the number of students pursuing Professional Doctorates to stand out, boost their professional standing, and increase their income. The rise of Professional Doctorates is eclipsing the growth of traditional PhDs, and the academic intakes of the future look to be built of part-time professionals, who must also balance additional stressors such as family and personal life and their day-to-day careers. As such, this author recommends academic institutes promote the skills of resilience to help part-time students manage day-to-day stressors and embark on a more successful doctoral journey. This is an opinion-based paper that utilises lessons learned from the author’s own academic journey and the classic underpinning literature on resilience to recommend three sets of skills and mindsets that could help boost part-time doctoral students’ resilience.

In this study, we investigate the nature of Canadian early career (0 to 3 years) nurses' (N = 704; 87.8% female, aged 20 to 52) psychological need fulfillment profiles, accounting for the global and specific level of satisfaction and frustration of their needs for autonomy, relatedness, and competence. Our adoption of a longitudinal design (12 months, three time points with n = 626 at Time 1, 459 at Time 2, and 370 at Time 3) made it possible to test the within-person and within-sample stability of these profiles. To obtain a more in depth understanding of these profiles, we investigated the role of job demands and resources in the prediction of profile membership, and several work-related outcomes of these profiles. Latent transition analysis revealed five profiles differing in global and specific need fulfillment levels. These profiles remained stable over the 12 months, although nurses tended to transition into less fulfilled profiles over time. Nurses' perceptions of job demands and resources shared well-differentiated relations with the profiles, and more fulfilled profiles tended to report more adaptive functioning and well-being at work. The examination of gender in fieldwork highlights a need to provide attention to possible problematic instances that may arise between women interviewers and men participants. Qualitative research identifies that women interviewing men find themselves continually navigating power imbalances while attempting to negotiate safe environments for themselves. Gender in fieldwork predominately focuses on differences between interviewer and interviewees, with little understanding of similarities that contribute to shaping the research environment and research outcomes. This article draws on PhD research and my experience as a cisgender woman PhD student conducting interviews with cisgender men to demonstrate the multiple meaningful ways interviews are constructed and negotiated, including how both interviewer and interviewees draw on sameness in the field. I argue that gendered behaviours are not always obvious and problematic, but rather can be subtle, fluid and work to support shared understandings of the research topic. The research involved surveying active pastors of the Reformed Church in Hungary through an online tool between 2 May and 18 June 2023. In our current analysis, we included pastors with active status in Hungary (N = 681). In this study, we looked at the mental health of those in their first five years of ministry compared to those who have served longer. In terms of well-being, there is a higher proportion of pastors at risk among those who have served for 1–5 years. In this essay, we explore the possible causes of this phenomenon and formulate hypotheses for further research. We discuss the challenges and complexities faced by pastors in contemporary society, highlighting the changing roles and expectations within the church. The findings suggest that pastors often experience fatigue, emotional challenges, and conflicting expectations. The diversity of pastoral roles, evolving societal norms, and the pastor’s evolving identity contribute to the complexity of their responsibilities. This paper identifies different phases in the pastor’s journey, from initial exposure to pastoral life to assuming the role professionally. Little is known about the procedural characteristics, case volumes, and mortality rates for early- vs non–early-career interventional cardiologists in the United States. This study examined operator-level data for patients who underwent percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) between April 2018 and June 2022. Data were collected from the National Cardiovascular Data Registry CathPCI Registry, American Board of Internal Medicine certification database, and National Plan and Provider Enumeration System database. Early-career operators were within 5 years of the end of training. Annual case volume, expected mortality and bleeding risk, and observed/predicted mortality and bleeding outcomes were evaluated. A total of 1,451 operators were early career; 1,011 changed their career status during the study; and 6,251 were non–early career. Overall, 514,540 patients were treated by early-career and 2,296,576 patients by non–early-career operators. The median annual case volume per operator was 59 (Q1-Q3: 31-97) for early-career and 57 (Q1-Q3: 28-100) for non–early-career operators. Early-career operators were more likely to treat patients presenting with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction and urgent indications for PCI (both P < 0.001). The median predicted mortality risk was 2.0% (Q1-Q3: 1.5%-2.7%) for early-career and 1.8% (Q1-Q3: 1.2%-2.4%) for non–early-career operators. The median predicted bleeding risk was 4.9% (Q1-Q3: 4.2%-5.7%) for early-career and 4.4% (Q1-Q3: 3.7%-5.3%) for non–early-career operators. After adjustment, an increased risk of mortality (OR: 1.08; 95% CI: 1.05-1.17; P < 0.0001) and bleeding (OR: 1.08; 95% CI: 1.05-1.12; P < 0.0001) were associated with early-career status. Early-career operators are caring for patients with more acute presentations and higher predicted risk of mortality and bleeding compared with more experienced colleagues, with modestly worse outcomes. The fragmentation of academic work and its uneven distribution among academic staff have produced particular challenges for new entrants to teaching in Higher Education, Early Career Teachers [ECTs]. In this paper, documentary analysis of the narratives of fourteen ECTs, who worked across six different continents, was undertaken. The findings highlight the diverse forms of precarity that ECTs face, which cut across migratory, identitarian, economic, and ideological dimensions. It discusses ECTs' reflections on their expectations of teaching and their adaptation to the demands of neoliberal Higher Education. Drawing from their narratives and Sevil Sümer's theories of differentiated academic citizenship, ECTs are recognised as 'precarious academic citizens'. This has important implications for revealing the unique circumstances of this group, thereby opening further questions as regards their mentoring and support to enable them to be situated more equally as citizens of the academy. The number of transplant infectious disease (TID) fellowship programs has expanded rapidly in the past 5 years, with the creation of many new programs and the expansion of training tracks and dedicated years as the demand for TID physicians grows drastically. This editorial focuses on major factors and complexities that programs should consider in TID fellowship creation, as well as highlighting examples of formative experiences, programmatic structure, and fellow resources that trainees can use to identify their desired career path in TID. Combining study and work has become a widespread phenomenon in Russia. According to the national monitoring of graduate employment, about 53% of full-time bachelor and specialist degree holders worked for at least one month during their studies. The article presents a comprehensive analysis of the characteristics of combining study and work and an assessment of their contribution to individual wages and the probability of employment one year after graduation. The results suggest that regular employment during the academic year is more common than temporary employment during the summer break. On average, combining study and work increases the probability of employment one year after graduation by 16-19% and brings a wage premium of 14%. However, there are significant differences in the size of the effect depending on the characteristics of student employment and educational factors. The combination of studying and working in the final years of university has a larger effect on wages and the probability of employment. There are significant cross effects between the fact of combining study and work with fields of study and the degree of university selectivity. The observed effects suggest that a special model of transition from study to work has emerged in Russia, in which professional career entry precedes graduation. Moreover, the results of the study show that there is a strong complementarity between education and combining study with work. Combining study and work does not yield significant returns when the quality of education is low, while success in the labour market is achieved through a combination of different educational factors and not solely work experience.

Counselling psychology in South Africa has recently emerged from a tumultuous period, stemming from regulatory efforts in 2011, which negatively impacted on the profession's status and viability. While the definition and scope of counselling psychology arguably demonstrate improvements in aligning with global practices, concerns persist surrounding the work opportunities and professional experiences of counselling psychologists, particularly those in the early stages of their careers. This study aimed to gain an in-depth understanding of the professional experiences of early career counselling psychologists in South Africa. The pool of participants were 10 early career counselling psychologists (females = 7, males = 3, period in service = 1–10 years). The participants completed semi-structured interviews on their early career professional experiences, as well as the meanings they attributed to these experiences. An interpretative phenomenological analysis of the data revealed three group experiential themes: (1) the complexity of finding and securing work; (2) navigating an array of personal, professional, and systemic challenges, and (3) self-acquiring support. The findings suggest that despite the unique and valuable skills and knowledge counselling psychologists possess, the participants struggled to successfully transition into the workforce, resulting in feelings of anxiety, frustration, and professional disillusionment. The findings indicate enhanced support is needed at various levels to address the needs and bolster the wellbeing, utilisation, and retention of counselling psychologists in their transition into the South African workforce. The purpose of this study was to understand how early career Women of Color (WOC) in school-based mental health fields experienced a structured, group-based approach to help them navigate the imposter syndrome. The researchers employed a case study design to examine the women's experiences. Findings revealed that participants developed critical consciousness about imposter syndrome, recognizing the systemic and oppressive underpinnings of the construct, and acquired helpful strategies for dismantling their experiences of imposter syndrome (e.g., gaining support from other women) in their professional lives. Introduction: Disparities between metropolitan and non‐metropolitan health workforce must be addressed to reduce inequities in health care access. Understanding factors affecting early career practitioners' choice of practice location can inform workforce planning. Objective: To investigate influences on rural practice location preferences of recent graduates. Design: Cross‐sectional analysis linked university enrolment, Graduate Outcomes Survey (GOS) and Australian Health Professional Regulation Agency (Ahpra) principal place of practice (PPP) for 2018 and 2019 nursing and allied health graduates from two Australian universities. Chi‐squared tests and logistic regression compared rural versus urban PPP and locational preference. Findings: Of 2979 graduates, 1295 (43.5%) completed the GOS, with 63.7% (n = 825) working in their profession and 84.0% of those (n = 693) in their preferred location. Ahpra PPP data were extracted for 669 (81.1%) of those working in their profession. Most reported influences were 'proximity to family/friends' (48.5%), 'lifestyle of the area' (41.7%) and 'opportunity for career advancement' (40.7%). Factors most influential for rural PPP were 'cost of accommodation/housing' (OR = 2.26, 95% CI = 1.23–4.17) and 'being approached by an employer' (OR = 2.10, 95% CI = 1.12–3.92). Having an urban PPP was most influenced by 'spouse/partners employment/career' (OR = 0.53, 95% CI = 0.30–0.93) and 'proximity to family/friends' (OR = 0.41, 95% CI = 0.24–0.72). Discussion: While the findings add strength to the understanding that graduates who originated from a rural area are most likely to take up rural practice in their preferred location, varied social and professional factors are influential on decision‐making. Conclusions: It is imperative to recruit students from non‐metropolitan regions into health professional degrees, as well as addressing other influences on choice of practice location. To scope and synthesise literature around the job satisfaction of early career midwives – those in their first five years of post-qualification practice – including the effect on their career aspirations and intention to leave the profession. Scoping review. Relevant databases were searched for published research studies and grey literature. Literature were selected through adherence to pre-set inclusion and exclusion criteria to ensure relevance. Literature was included that was published from 2012. Selected literature were tabled and common themes were mapped to look for similarities and differences in findings. Ten papers were included – seven original research studies, a fact sheet, a non peer-reviewed article, and a conference paper. Negative themes – lack of support, workload stress, and job dissatisfaction, and positive themes – passion for midwifery, collegial relationships, and autonomy – were found across many of the included papers. Many midwives are considering leaving their profession due to the stress of their work, role dissatisfaction, and a lack of support. This is more common amongst early career midwives. There were some protective factors such as having pride in the midwifery profession. More research is needed to identify and address the needs specific to early career midwives. This column will showcase different aspects of the journey from musical theatre professional to director of a rural public library: how this came to be, findings of a library outsider, and recommendations for overcoming imposter syndrome. The author mentions the successes and failures she experienced in her first year as a library supervisor, and the sharp contrast between growing up in an urban setting and working in a rural city/county public library. This column concludes with the idea that how one presents oneself and the tangible actions one takes towards working in and advocating for their library can speak more highly of their abilities than being a perfect job candidate on paper.

This exploratory study aims to identify the prevalence of organizational cynicism among early career psychiatrists in Lithuania. In order to achieve the purpose, the following research questions were raised: What is the prevalence of organizational cynicism among early career psychiatrists in Lithuania and how does organizational cynicism differ depending on the sociodemographic characteristics of these specialists? All early career psychiatrists employed in Lithuanian health care institutions were invited to participate in the study, and 56 of them filled out questionnaires. The obtained data were processed using descriptive statistical methods. Significant differences in indicators of organizational cynicism were identified depending on the respondents’ place of study. In addition, organizational cynicism varied by specialty: psychiatry residents had the highest mean scores; while child and adolescent psychiatrists, had the lowest. The study provides valuable insights into understanding the nature of organisational cynicism in terms of dispositional, cognitive, affective and behavioural cynicism. The obtained findings may contribute to the development of further research by promoting targeted interventions to address cynical attitudes towards work among early career psychiatrists.

Abstract Plastics pollution research attracts scientists from diverse disciplines. Many Early Career Researchers (ECRs) are drawn to this field to investigate and subsequently mitigate the negative impacts of plastics. Solving the multi-faceted plastic problem will always require breakthroughs across all levels of science disciplinarity, which supports interdisciplinary discoveries and underpins transdisciplinary solutions. In this context, ECRs have the opportunity to work across scientific discipline boundaries and connect with different stakeholders, including industry, policymakers and the public. To fully realize their potential, ECRs need to develop strong communication and project management skills to be able to effectively interface with academic peers and non-academic stakeholders. At the end of their formal education, many ECRs will choose to leave academia and pursue a career in private industry, government, research institutes or non-governmental organizations (NGOs). Here we give perspectives on how ECRs can develop the skills to tackle the challenges and opportunities of this transdisciplinary research field and how these skills can be transferred to different working sectors. We also explore how advisors can support an ECRs’ growth through inclusive leadership and coaching. We further consider the roles each party may play in developing ECRs into mature scientists by helping them build a strong foundation, while also critically assessing problems in an interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary context. We hope these concepts can be useful in fostering the development of the next generation of plastics pollution researchers so they can address this global challenge more effectively. Drawing on my previous experience as an early career scholar, my current role as a global mentor to emerging scholars, and my decade of research on sustainable careers, I shed light on the profound impact of mentorship for early career scholars. This article uncovers three compelling facets illuminating how mentorship can offer robust scaffolding for these intellectuals. Firstly, we unravel the secret to deciphering the unspoken codes of the academic world, ensuring you are not just a player but a master of the game. Secondly, we explore how taking the reins of your academic destiny can be made more attainable with a mentor's steady support and wisdom. Lastly, we delve into the often overlooked link between mentorship and holistic well-being, emphasising the vital role in nurturing careers and personal fulfilment. Through these insights, we see how mentorship catalyses early career scholars towards heightened productivity, career satisfaction, and an increased likelihood of success in their scholarly pursuits.

Donor‐derived infections in solid organ transplantation can be prevented by risk stratification of donors based on available information, and inquiries surrounding possible or diagnosed infection are common questions posed to transplant infectious disease subspecialists. This article outlines the five key steps in addressing a donor call from a transplant team in a systematic approach, focusing on donor and recipient‐specific factors, transmissibility and treatment of possible infections, and the likelihood of a patient's future organ offers and mortality remaining on the waitlist. These principles are then applied to five donor call cases, in which we review the key takeaway points and supporting literature. These cases can be used as a resource for teaching with trainees. Creating protocols surrounding the guidance of the prevention and treatment of infections in transplantation is an integral part of being a transplant infectious disease physician. This piece outlines the key components for success in developing a protocol, with an example protocol and protocol template available for readers. Collaborating effectively within the multi‐disciplinary team to develop, implement, and assess the efficacy of a protocol is a skill that enhances the relationship with our transplantation colleagues and improves patient outcomes by standardizing the care delivered. Transcribed interview data was subjected to reflexive thematic analysis.Four themes were generated, constructed as questions to represent participants’ temporary holding of intentions: 1) What drives me?; 2) Do my expectations align?; 3) Do my values align?; and 4) What does the future hold?Early career physiotherapists’ perspectives encompass diverse and varied experiences that reflect an alignment, or in some cases a misalignment, of the expectations, values and resulting practices of becoming and being a physiotherapist. Early career physiotherapists experience a range of challenges within their workplaces, including significant experiences of stress, yet they express an underlying commitment to the wider profession. Plastics pollution research attracts scientists from diverse disciplines. Many Early Career Researchers (ECRs) are drawn to this field to investigate and subsequently mitigate the negative impacts of plastics. Solving the multi-faceted plastic problem will always require breakthroughs across all levels of science disciplinarity, which supports interdisciplinary discoveries and underpins transdisciplinary solutions. In this context, ECRs have the opportunity to work across scientific discipline boundaries and connect with different stakeholders, including industry, policymakers and the public. To fully realize their potential, ECRs need to develop strong communication and project management skills to be able to effectively interface with academic peers and non-academic stakeholders. At the end of their formal education, many ECRs will choose to leave academia and pursue a career in private industry, government, research institutes or non-governmental organizations (NGOs). Here we give perspectives on how ECRs can develop the skills to tackle the challenges and opportunities of this transdisciplinary research field and how these skills can be transferred to different working sectors. We also explore how advisors can support an ECRs' growth through inclusive leadership and coaching. We further consider the roles each party may play in developing ECRs into mature scientists by helping them build a strong foundation, while also critically assessing problems in an interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary context. We hope these concepts can be useful in fostering the development of the next generation of plastics pollution researchers so they can address this global challenge more effectively. An abstract is a concise summary of scholarly work and is the first impression for the editor, peer reviewer, or journal audience. When presenting or writing up scholarly activity, an abstract is required for submission and guidelines vary depending on the conference, journal, and grant application. Many early career researchers and pharmacists feel unequipped to summarize research activity and need guidance to get started with abstract writing. A stepwise approach can be a valuable tool for all types of learners. From start to finish, this paper provides guidance and specific examples to write a high‐quality abstract effectively for conferences, journals, and grant application submissions. By following the eight sequential steps of abstract writing provided, pharmacists can potentially develop a skillset to advance scholarly work and showcase it to the scientific community. Nurturing the development of the next generation of resuscitation scientists is essential for creating a vibrant and enabled community equipped with the necessary knowledge, attitudes, and skills to transform resuscitation practice and improve outcomes.In this concept paper we will describe the development and implementation of the first Young European Resuscitation Council Resuscitation Science Masterclass. The masterclass aims to connect, inspire, and support the growth of the next generation of resuscitation scientists through education, networking, and joint scientific work. The masterclass provides 20 international, multi-professional early career resuscitation scientists with the opportunity to expand their knowledge and network as well as conduct joint scientific work over the course of one year. This is achieved by interactive webinars, innovative online workshops, engaging online journal clubs as well as an educational in-person event to conclude the masterclass.The Young European Resuscitation Council Resuscitation Science Masterclass aims to strengthen the global resuscitation community and next generation of resuscitation scientists by facilitating opportunities of broader international initiatives and collaboration for early career resuscitation scientists, potentially leading to accelerated recruitment of future resuscitation leaders. Ultimately, this masterclass may enable early career researchers to produce high impact research that can shape the future of resuscitation science and improve cardiac arrest patient care globally.

Abstract Background Early- and mid-career academics in medicine, dentistry and health sciences are integral to research, education and advancement of clinical professions, yet experience significant illbeing, high attrition and limited advancement opportunities. Objectives Identify and synthesise published research investigating challenges and opportunities related to diversity and inclusion, as experienced by early and mid-career academics employed in medicine, dentistry and health sciences disciplines. Design Rapid review. Data sources OVID Medline, Embase, APA PsycInfo, CINAHL and Scopus. Methods We systematically searched for peer reviewed published articles within the last five years, investigating challenges and opportunities related to diversity and inclusion, as experienced by early and mid-career academics employed in medicine, dentistry and health sciences. We screened and appraised articles, then extracted and synthesised data. Results Database searches identified 1162 articles, 11 met inclusion criteria. Studies varied in quality, primarily reporting concepts encompassed by professional identity. There were limited findings relating to social identity, with sexual orientation and disability being a particularly notable absence, and few findings relating to inclusion. Job insecurity, limited opportunities for advancement or professional development, and a sense of being undervalued in the workplace were evident for these academics. Conclusions Our review identified overlap between academic models of wellbeing and key opportunities to foster inclusion. Challenges to professional identity such as job insecurity can contribute to development of illbeing. Future interventions to improve wellbeing in academia for early- and mid-career academics in these fields should consider addressing their social and professional identity, and foster their inclusion within the academic community. Aims: To (a) explore the experiences of early career registered nurses in rural hospitals in Australia and (b) identify strategies they believe would help increase job satisfaction and retention. Design: Qualitative descriptive design. Methods: Thirteen registered nurses located in outer regional, remote or very remote (herein 'rural') Australian hospitals participated in semi‐structured interviews. Participants had graduated from a Bachelor of Nursing program in 2018–2020. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis and an essentialist, bottom‐up approach. Results: Seven themes related to the experiences of rural early career nursing: (1) appreciate diverse scope of practice; (2) rewarding sense of community and opportunity to give back; (3) staff support determines the quality of experience; (4) feeling underprepared and the need for ongoing education; (5) diverse views on the optimal length of rotation and level of input into choice of clinical area; (6) difficulty maintaining work/life balance due to work hours and rostering; and (7) lack of staff and resources. Strategies to improve nurses' experiences included: (1) assistance with accommodation and transport; (2) social gatherings to enhance connection; (3) sufficient orientation and supernumerary time; (4) increased frequency of contact with clinical facilitators and multiple mentors; (5) prioritizing clinical education across diverse topics; (6) greater involvement in choice of rotations and clinical areas; and (7) desire for more flexible work hours and rostering. Conclusions: This study highlighted the experiences of rural nurses and explored their suggestions for how to overcome challenges in their roles. Greater consideration of early career registered nurses' needs and preferences is vital to improving and maintaining a satisfied, dedicated and sustainable rural nursing workforce. Introduction: Workforce sustainability is critical to equitable and safe healthcare. However, there is evidence of poor transition of new graduates to the workplace, with a resultant loss of health professionals from the system. Globally, little is known about allied health transition and transition interventions. The aims of this mixed-methods systematic review were to describe the characteristics of transition to practice programs for novice allied health professionals, the outcomes from these programs, how they are measured and how transition challenges are addressed in transition programs. Methods: Searches were conducted in MEDLINE, CINAHL, PsycINFO, AMED and the Cochrane Library. Two researchers reviewed the studies and reached a consensus for inclusion through discussion. All study types were included. Articles were evaluated using the Mixed-Methods Appraisal Tool, with reporting guided by the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses. Results: A total of 15 studies were included. Various allied health populations, interventions, timeframes, program content and learning modes were used but with limited description. There was misalignment between allied health graduates' expectations, practice reality and supports offered within transition programs. While authors reported success from transition interventions, outcomes were not clear and there was a lack of tools for robust outcome measurement. Conclusion: Well-designed transition programs are needed to build evidence on effective interventions and support. Introduction: The International Society for Bipolar Disorders created the Early Mid‐Career Committee (EMCC) to support career development of the next generation of researchers and clinicians specializing in bipolar disorder (BD). To develop new infrastructure and initiatives, the EMCC completed a Needs Survey of the current limitations and gaps that restrict recruitment and retention of researchers and clinicians focused on BD. Methods: The EMCC Needs Survey was developed through an iterative process, relying on literature and content expertise of workgroup members. The survey included 8 domains: navigating transitional career stages, creating and fostering mentorship, research activities, raising academic profile, clinical‐research balance, networking and collaboration, community engagement, work‐life balance. The final survey was deployed from May to August 2022 and was available in English, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, and Chinese. Results: Three hundred participants across six continents completed the Needs Survey. Half of the participants self‐identified as belonging to an underrepresented group in health‐related sciences (i.e., from certain gender, racial, ethnic, cultural, or disadvantaged backgrounds including individuals with disabilities). Quantitative results and qualitative content analysis revealed key barriers to pursuing a research career focused on BD with unique challenges specific to scientific writing and grant funding. Participants highlighted mentorship as a key facilitator of success in research and clinical work. Conclusion: The results of the Needs Survey are a call to action to support early‐ and midcareer professionals pursuing a career in BD. Interventions required to address the identified barriers will take coordination, creativity, and resources to develop, implement, and encourage uptake but will have long‐lasting benefits for research, clinical practice, and ultimately those affected by BD. This article describes a collaborative self-study of seven early career mathematics teacher educators. Our collective group sought to improve our practice in, and enhance transparency around, supporting prospective teachers as they engaged in equity-based mathematics pedagogies. The collaboration evolved into a critical friendship and provided a space to study, reflect and supportively challenge our practices. We found that self-study methodology matched our motivation to improve our practice as teacher educators, while recognizing the contexts of our other professional and institutional obligations and upholding our own values. We draw upon a traffic roundabout as a metaphor for our experience in self-study, noting the ways it provided professional learning and moved our work with prospective teachers forward. Referrals are individuals' whose employment suitability for desired roles has been validated by referrers. Traditionally, referrers were individuals whom referrals know in real life (IRL). Referrers are also known to hiring authorities and can vouch for the referrals' employment credentials. Hence, referrals' employment applications are viewed more favorably than applicants who are not referrals. However, the internet/social media also serves as a referrer for applicants' employment qualifications. That is, people's employment attributes can be validated by their internet/social media activity and engagement with followers. They may not know their followers IRL and hiring authorities may not know the applicants' followers IRL, either. Nevertheless, applicants' internet/social media engagement can serve as a referral for their qualifications. This study investigates how early career individuals perceive internet/social media activity as evidence of applicants' employment attributes and, thus, a referral method for employment opportunities. The study broadens research on referrals by including applicants' internet/social media activity and provides practical strategies to enhance early career individuals' employment strategies. Matt Clancy writes about how the pandemic shaped his career choices on completing his PhD, and argues that the present challenges facing the profession mean that we should reconsider how we define ourselves as medievalists. He affirms that it is possible to finish a PhD in a pandemic and tentatively begin a career, and that an apparent lack of correspondence between experience as a medievalist and seemingly non-medievalist employment diminishes neither his identity as a medievalist, nor his engagement with the field the enforced change from teaching in person to teaching online is well-suited to the skills medievalists have already developed through teaching Chaucer and other medieval texts, since both present a strange version of the familiar.

Improving our understanding of how the ocean absorbs carbon dioxide is critical to climate change mitigation efforts. We, a group of early career ocean professionals working in Canada, summarize current research and identify steps forward to improve our understanding of the marine carbon sink in Canadian national and offshore waters. We have compiled an extensive collection of reported surface ocean air–sea carbon dioxide exchange values within each of Canada's three adjacent ocean basins. We review the current understanding of air–sea carbon fluxes and identify major challenges limiting our understanding in the Pacific, the Arctic, and the Atlantic Ocean. We focus on ways of reducing uncertainty to inform Canada's carbon stocktake, establish baselines for marine carbon dioxide removal projects, and support efforts to mitigate and adapt to ocean acidification. Future directions recommended by this group include investing in maturing and building capacity in the use of marine carbon sensors, improving ocean biogeochemical models fit-for-purpose in regional and ocean carbon dioxide removal applications, creating transparent and robust monitoring, verification, and reporting protocols for marine carbon dioxide removal, tailoring community-specific approaches to co-generate knowledge with First Nations, and advancing training opportunities for early career ocean professionals in marine carbon science and technology.
