1. Transvenous lead extraction on uninterrupted anticoagulation: A safe approach?

Abstract

Introduction: Current guidelines advocate reviewing peri-procedural anticoagulation on individual case basis for transvenous lead extraction (TLE). We investigated the safety of TLE on uninterrupted warfarin with therapeutic INR. Methods: Retrospective registry of consecutive patients undergoing TLE on uninterrupted warfarin (Warfarin Group) across two centres. Age and sex matched controls not on anticoagulation (No-Warfarin Group) and undergoing TLE over the same time-period were included. Both groups were compared over one-year. Results: 121 TLEs over 18-months. 22 patients on uninterrupted anticoagulation were compared to 22 controls. Groups were well matched for baseline demographics other than INR. Warfarin group had mean INR of 2.2 ± 0.6 (range 2–3.5). Primary end point was procedural safety and efficacy. Amongst cases, 43/45 (96%) leads were removed in their entirety compared to 37/40 (93%) in controls (p = 0.66). In the cases, these included 44% defibrillator, 47% pace-sense and 9% CS leads of average duration 7yrs. There was no reported tamponade, haemothorax or procedural mortality in either group. One patient amongst cases required inotropic support while two patients amongst controls had device-site haematomas. No significant difference reported in Hb drop post-procedure or overall complication rate between the groups (p = 0.11,0.32). Cox regression showed a significant association between procedural success and device infection, number of leads extracted, serum creatinine (p = 0.03, 0.04, 0.02). Over a 1-year follow-up, there was lead displacement in one case and one control had infection of the re-implanted device. Conclusion: TLE can be carried out safely in anticoagulated patients with therapeutic INRs. Larger multicentre studies are required to confirm these findings.

12. Flipping the Graduate Qualitative Research Methods Classroom: Did It Lead to Flipped Learning?

Abstract

The flipped, or inverted, classroom has gained popularity in a variety of fields and at a variety of educational levels, from K-12 through higher education. This paper describes the author's positive experience flipping a graduate qualitative research methods classroom. After a review of the current literature on flipped classrooms in higher education, the author discusses his reasons for flipping, the steps he took to create the flipped classroom, and the outcomes of the flipped classroom experience. The author evaluates whether flipped learning occurred according to the four pillars of FLIP (FLN, 2014) and discusses suggestions for both future researchers and future classroom flippers.

15. Graduate Students' Expectations of an Introductory Research Methods Course

Abstract

While there is a scattered literature base on teaching research methods courses, there is very little literature that speaks to what and how students learn in research methods courses. Students are often described as coming to the course not seeing its relevance, bringing negative attitudes and low motivation with them. The purpose of this exploratory mixed methods study was to investigate graduate student attitudes toward research, expectations of an introductory research methods course, and any relationship between the two. A total of 117 students completed the Attitudes Toward Research scale and a series of open-ended questions. Results indicate these graduate students actually came in with moderate to high positive attitudes toward research and mixed expectations about what the course would entail. Students expected research methods to be difficult, but they did not report much anxiety related to research. Implications for teaching and future research are discussed.

16. A Statistics Course with No Instructor? Why Students Would Revolt.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to talk with students about their experiences taking introductory statistics. There are few data in the current literature beyond "statistics anxiety" and test scores to tell us how students perceive the course. The researcher met with 11 students individually for 4 interviews throughout the semester, followed by a member-checking focus group during the last week of classes. One of the most salient themes to emerge from the data was the students' reliance on their instructor for feedback about performance, directions on taking notes, and creating a classroom environment that motivates them to study. Further, none of these students considered this course as different from any of their other courses except in content. The paper discusses some implications for helping instructors create supportive classroom environments through a model that stresses the interactions between students and instructors, both directly in the classroom and indirectly outside the classroom. 17. A Comparison of the Psychometric Qualities of Surveys Administered by Web and Traditional Methods.

Abstract

A study was conducted to compare the psychometric qualities of two forms of an identical survey: one administered in a paper-and-pencil format and the other administered in Web format. The survey addressed the topic of college course anxiety and used to survey a sample of 236 undergraduate students. The psychometric qualities investigated included the overall reliability (internal consistency) and item analyses of the 56 individual survey items for both versions. Results reveal a great deal of similarity between the two modes of survey delivery. Analysis of the paper-and-pencil survey data generated a Cronbach's alpha equal to 0.88; analysis of the Web survey data generated a value of 0.89. Further information comparisons of the item analysis revealed very similar patterns in the responses to individual items, indicating that the two modes of survey delivery were quite comparable. 18. Deconstructing Statistics Anxiety.

Abstract

A number of scales have been developed to measure the construct of statistics anxiety, the anxiety students feel when they take a statistics course, but few researchers have examined whether this anxiety is due solely to being enrolled in a statistics course or if there is some component that is simply a function of being a student (anxiety in any course, not just statistics). This study compared responses statistics students and writing students gave to the same course attitude scale, which was created from two existing statistics anxiety scales. Responses were received from approximately 28% of students in three writing and three statistics sections. Response patterns from the two groups were similar, indicating that items created to measure statistics anxiety may be measuring a general "course anxiety" construct instead of being specific to statistics courses. Future research should continue to explore the existing anxiety surveys to determine how "statistics anxiety" is being defined, and how the definition may be made more clear. Abstract

Abstract

INTRODUCTION The Heliostar™ ablation system is a novel RF balloon ablation technology with an integrated three-dimensional mapping system. Here, we describe our early experience and procedural outcomes using this technology for atrial fibrillation catheter ablation. METHODS We sought to comprehensively assess the first 60 consecutive patients undergoing pulmonary vein isolation using the novel HELISOTAR™ RF balloon technology including procedural outcomes. A comparison of the workflow between two different anaesthetic modalities (conscious sedation [CS] vs. general anaesthesia [GA]) was made. Procedural data were collected prospectively from two high-volume centers (Barts Heart Centre, UK and University Hospital of Zurich, Zurich). A standardized approach for catheter ablation was employed. RESULTS A total of 35 patients had the procedure under CS and the remaining under GA. Mean procedural and fluoroscopy times were 84 ± 33 min and 1.1 min. The median duration of RF energy application was 7 (5-9.8) mins per patient. All veins were successfully isolated, and the median isolation time was 10 (7-15) seconds. Our cohort's rate of procedural complications was low, with no mortality within 30 days postprocedure. CONCLUSION Our early experience shows that catheter ablation using the Heliostar™ technology can be performed efficiently and safely; however, long-term data is yet to be established. Low fluoroscopy requirements, short learning curves and use of this technology with CS is possible, including the use of an oesophageal temperature probe.

40. A Synthesis of the Literature on Research Methods Education

Abstract

The purpose of this research synthesis is to examine the current research on teaching and learning research methods. The aims are to understand the themes present in the current literature and identify gaps in our understanding of how we teach, and how students learn, research methods. A synthesis of 89 studies generated three themes: (1) characteristics of students taking a research methods course, (2) teaching methods and techniques, and (3) content and course goals. Gaps identified include a lack of research on assessment and on what and how students learn in research methods courses. The majority of studies reviewed were teacher reports of attempted teaching strategies so that an additional need exists for other types of research into the teaching and learning of research methods such as case studies of students' learning or experimental studies of assessment techniques. Suggestions for instructors and future research are considered.

44. Students' Expectations of Introductory Statistics Instructors

Abstract

The purpose of this phenomenological study was to talk to students about their experiences taking introductory statistics. The author met with eleven students individually for four interviews throughout the semester, followed by a member-checking focus group during the last week of classes. One of the most salient themes to emerge was the students' reliance on their instructor for feedback about performance, directions on taking notes, and the creation of a classroom environment that motivated them to study. As part of the phenomenological tradition, the author presents his own reflections based on these students' comments. 45. Middle Grades' School Models and Their Impact on Early Adolescent Self-Esteem

Abstract

Throughout the world, school grade structures are most variable during the early adolescent years when students can find themselves in a variety of school models. This paper investigates the impact of two popular school models in the United States (middle school and K-8) on the self-esteem and self-concept of early adolescents. Based on mixed method longitudinal research conducted over the 2004-2005 academic year, the study finds differences in levels of self-esteem amongst sixth grade students at the beginning and end of the school year, with students in K-8 buildings having higher increased levels of self-esteem when compared to students in other models. Gender analysis reveals girls are more negatively impacted by middle school environments than boys. Both quantitative and qualitative analysis reveals greater feelings of anonymity amongst middle school students and more negative attitudes toward their own social behavior. Overall results point to serious implications in school design and timing of transition for early adolescents. (Contains 1 figure, 3 tables and 1 footnote.)

50. Improving Statistics Education through Simulations: The Case of the Sampling Distribution.

Abstract

This paper presents a summary of action research investigating statistics students' understandings of the sampling distribution of the mean. With four sections of an introductory Statistics in Education course (n=98 students), a computer simulation activity (R. delMas, J. Garfield, and B. Chance, 1999) was implemented and evaluated to show students the sampling distribution "in action," as recommended by many authors and statistics professors. Assessments after the activity point to clear deficiencies in student understanding, such as not understanding how sample size affects the shape and variability of sampling distributions. With the addition of the computer simulation, the understandings of many students are still incomplete. This was most evident as the instructor moved forward in class to introduce inferential statistics. The paper discusses some of the deficiencies noted in student understandings and how the action research cycle will continue to work on these deficiencies. The posttest is attached. (SLD)
