Examined styles of denial associated with traumatic information (specifically human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)/acquired immune deficiency syndrome infection) among 58 HIV-positive patients. Found three styles of denial, evenly distributed across subjects: primary denial, secondary denial, and denial with no benefit. Found some mobility where 9 percent of population migrated from one style to higher adaptive style. (Author/NB)

Investigated 85 female adolescent inpatients in treatment for problems of differentiation and emancipation. Used treatment variation which suggested that girls were suffering from variety of posttraumatic stress disorder. When ritualistic behavioral repetitions were addressed by cognitive behavioral approaches, behaviors decreased. Findings support hypothesis that subjects were experiencing effects of trauma (actual or perceived) rather than personality disorder. (Author/NB)

The nature of titanium sites in titanium-substituted zeolites were examined using the paramagnetism of Ti3+.

(Ir4(CO)12) and (Ir6(CO)16) were synthesized in the pores of zeolite NaY by reductive carbonylation of sorbed (Ir(CO)2(acac)), and (Rh6(CO)16) was similarly synthesized from (Rh(CO)2(acac)). The supported metal carbonyl clusters were decarbonylated to provide supported clusters modeled on the basis of extended X-ray absorption fine structure spectra as Ir4, Ir6 and Rh6, respectively. The supported metal carbonyl clusters and the supported metal clusters formed by their decarbonylation were studied by 129Xe NMR spectroscopy at 100-305 K. As the temperature increased the chemical shift decreased. Findings showed that xenon is less strongly adsorbed on the decarbonylated metal clusters than on the zeolite framework.

One- and two-dimensional NMR spectra of 129Xe sorbed in NaY zeolite at a loading of about 1 Xe atom/4 alpha-cages were investigated as a function of temperature. The data were fitted to the simple statistical mechanical cylindrical pore model of Cheung producing a van der Waals adsorption energy of 3.3 kJ/mol. Two-dimensional data indicated that the intercrystalline diffusion is slow compared to intracrystalline diffusion. Findings showed that the Xe atoms spend most of their time in the alpha-cages and at the lower temperatures, near the cage walls.

The chemical shifts of titanosilicates were observed using 29Si MAS nuclear magnetic resonance to determine the existence of interactions between titanium silicates. The study tried to identify the catalytically active site in titanium-substituted zeolites. It was also hypothesized that the 29Si isotropic chemical shift relied on both the substitution and geometry of Si-O-X bonds. It was concluded that even if the equations and correlations were used in the study, there was still an unclear knowledge on the 29Si MAS NMR spectrum of the titanium-containing zeolites.

This study describes styles of denial associated with traumatic information (specifically HIV/AIDS infection). Participants were referred from three sites. Psychosocial, knowledge, and belief inventories were administered in structured individual intervies. CDC evaluations of high risk also were utilized. Clients with similar knowledge bases exhibited some differences in evaluating 'risk groups' versus 'high risk behavior.' Three styles of denial emerged: a) Primary Denial (PD), 2) Secondary Denial (SD, and 3) Denial with no benefit (NBD) (Deferred Behavior--conscious knowledge is high). The three styles were evenly distributed PD = 38 percent (22); SD = 33 percent (19); NBD = 29 percent (17). Threre appeared to be some mobility where 9 percent of the total population migrated from one style to a higher adaptive style.

Attempted to separate out an entity defined as self-trust from more social components of self-function (self-esteem, social appropriateness). Subjects were 95 high school students, 45 emotionally disturbed girls, and 55 junior college students. Self-trust was differentiated from self-esteem by social feedback issues. Self-trust should contribute to understanding of behavior of creative individuals. (Author/NB)

A pulse sequence designed for the excitation of multiple quantum transitions in magic angle spinning solid state NMR spectroscopy is presented. It is shown that under the action of the standard time-reversal pulse sequence, the change in the sign of the dipole coupling (which is used to generate the multiple quantum coherences) upon rotation causes the multiple quantum intensity to vanish after each rotor period. This effect is demonstrated both in calculations and in experimental 1H spectra of adamantane. A modification of the time-reversal pulse sequence, which involves switching the phase of the rf pulses every half-rotor period causes the spin part of the Hamiltonian to switch sign in synchrony with the modulation of the spacial part. This allows the creation of multiple quantum coherences in solids with magic angle spinning. The effectiveness of this pulse sequence is demonstrated through calculations and experiments. We present microscopic evidence that the aci ion (H2CNO-2) of nitromethane (H3CNO2) plays an important role in the detonation kinetics of liquid-phase nitromethane. It is known from previous detonation experiments that very minute additions of organic bases (e.g., amines) have a profound effect on the detonation properties of nitromethane; i.e., the explosive is strongly sensitized. Here we show that, under conditions similar to the detonation experiments, the only new chemical species generated in nitromethane by the bases sodium hydroxide (NaOH), diethylenetriamine (NH2CH2CH2NHCH2CH2NH2), and pyridine (C5H5N) is the aci ion, within the sensitivity of the experiments. The primary tool used to demonstrate this is 13C NMR spectroscopy. Ab initio quantum-mechanical calculations of the chemical shifts are used to support the experimental interpretation. Qualitative arguments concerning the increased reactivity of the aci ion, relative to normal nitromethane, are given. We review earlier work and relate it to the current findings.
