- Abstract

PrefaceHearing loss due to otosclerosis has been a subject of many different treatments. Since the understanding at the end of the nineteenth century that the disease was located in and around the cochlea and that it produces conducting and also perceptive hearing loss, all kinds of medical as well as surgical treatments have been applied to cure the disease. Most of the treatments have fallen into oblivion after the successful introduction of the stapedectomy in the late fifties of the last century. This book tries to highlight almost all possible treatments for otosclerosis presented in lite.

- Abstract
Due to the complex anatomical structure of the temporal bone, imaging diagnosis requires a very high degree of expertise. This atlas is not only helpful to assess pediatric ear disorders accurately, but also provides a treasure trove to experts. It consists of a pediatric temporal bone imaging atlas followed by case reports of typical pediatric ear diseases. In the first part complete contiguous temporal bone CT sections of an infant and an older child are shown along with a detailed listing of anatomical names of the structures. It further presents developmental changes in size, shape, location and orientation of the primary components of the temporal bone. The second part contains case images in combination with reference illustrations of a healthy child in the same age range allowing the reader to identify the key findings of the disorder with only one reference book at hand. Further images illustrate the posttreatment follow-up. This publication which is translated from the successful Japanese edition (2011) will be essential for otorhinolaryngologists and pediatricians particularly interested in pediatric ear diseases. Its unique layout makes it also a very effective tool for students learning image diagnosis.

The middle ear plays a vital role in the sense and sensitivity of hearing. Of the various characteristics that distinguish mammals from other vertebrates, several pertain specifically to the middle-ear system, such as the presence of three middle-ear bones and the four-layer composite structure of the tympanic membrane. The Middle Ear attempts to elucidate the role this system plays in sound transmission, as viewed from both scientific and clinical perspectives.

- Abstract
Exposure to loud noise continues to be the largest cause of hearing loss in the adult population. The problem of NIHL impacts a number of disciplines. US standards for permissible noise exposure were originally published in 1968 and remain largely unchanged today. Indeed, permissible noise exposure for US personnel is significantly greater than that allowed in numerous other countries, including for example, Canada, China, Brazil, Mexico, and the European Union. However, there have been a number of discoveries and advances that have increased our understanding of the mechanisms of NIHL. These advances have the potential to impact how NIHL can be prevented and how our noise standards can be made more appropriate.

- Abstract
I wrote the first edition of this work in 1987 with the object of providing a review of the aetiology, pathogenesis and morphological basis of diseases of the ear, nose and throat. Since that time important changes have taken place in the disciplines of both histopathology and otorhinolaryngology. Pathology has shifted its research orientation towards a molecular one; notable successes with new medical and surgical treatments in ENT have resulted in a striking expansion of that field. To provide a precis of the scientific principles of a subject lying between two such mobile territories was a daunt ing prospect. Help was indeed necessary and I welcome Henrik Hellquist as the co author of this second edition. He has had a longstanding interest in both head and neck and molecular pathology and has not only produced scholarly publications, but has also played an important role in enhancing international cooperation in this combined field.

- Abstract
Tinnitus is a prevalent hearing disease, affecting 15% of the population, particularly hearing impaired, veterans and even young people who grow up with mp3 players and iPods. The mechanisms underlying tinnitus remain controversial. At present there is no cure for tinnitus, and treatment options are limited. Different from previous tinnitus books, including A. R. Moller's book [in press at Springer], which typically have a strong clinical flavor, the present volume focuses on neural mechanisms of tinnitus and its behavioral consequences. The proposed book starts with a general summary of the field and a short introduction on the selection and content of the remaining chapters. Chapter 2 overviews tinnitus prevalence and etiologies to set the tone for significance and complexity of this neurological disorder spectrum. Chapters 3-8 cover neuroscience of tinnitus in animal models from molecular mechanisms to cortical manifestation. Chapters 9-12 cover human brain responses to tinnitus and it clinical management.

- Abstract
Otology is an intriguing subdiscipline of otolaryngology—head and neck surgery. Ear disorders are one of the commonest diseases encountered in ear, nose and throat practice. The correct diagnosis of ear diseases requires a thorough knowledge of the normal anatomy and its alteration in pathological conditions. Middle ear anatomy is quite complex. Rendering a concrete picture of middle ear using only words had been always a challenging task. The constant effort to solve the doubts of the students in the best possible way was the driving force behind this atlas. With this backup in mind, this comprehensive atlas was developed with lucid and relevant text which addresses normal and diseased state of tympanic membrane, ear canal and middle ear. The atlas consists of a total of 271 colored photographs obtained by using 4 mm zero degree sinuscope. The clarity and the optics of the endoscope give greater information of the ear conditions contrary to the traditional outpatient Bull's lamp or otoscopic examination. Before discussing the pathological conditions of the external and the middle ear, we have detailed the description of the normal tympanic membrane along with its variations. The appearance of the tympanic membrane is altered in various acute and chronic conditions affecting the middle ear. The alteration in its color, surface, intactness and position has been well illustrated in this atlas. The highlight of the atlas is unique approach of Exploration of the middle ear contents through subtotal perforation and its vast collection of pre and post operative images of Cartilage Tympanoplasty. This atlas will definitely supplement the standard ENT textbooks for a further in depth pictorial depiction of the ear disorders and thus facilitate proper diagnosis for dispensing appropriate treatment for otological disorders. We believe that this atlas will definitely be of immense help not only to the undergraduate and the postgraduate students, the ENT fraternity but also to general practitioners who also get a regular share of ENT patients. It is an update for the specialist treating otological pathologies as it is a “photogallery” of clinical findings accumulated over a period of time.

- Abstract
Soun is nought but air y-broke —Geoffrey Chaucer end of the 14th century Traditionally, acoustics has formed one of the fundamental branches of physics. In the twentieth century, the?eld has broadened considerably and become - creasingly interdisciplinary. At the present time, specialists in modern acoustics can be encountered not only in physics departments, but also in electrical and mechanical engineering departments, as well as in mathematics, oceanography, and even psychology departments. They work in areas spanning from musical instruments to architecture to problems related to speech perception. Today, six hundred years after Chaucer made his brilliant remark, we recognize that sound and acoustics is a discipline extremely broad in scope, literally covering waves and vibrations in all media at all frequencies and at all intensities. This series of scienti?c literature, entitled Modern Acoustics and Signal P- cessing (MASP), covers all areas of today's acoustics as an interdisciplinary?eld. It offers scienti?c monographs, graduate-level textbooks, and reference materials in such areas as architectural acoustics, structural sound and vibration, musical acoustics, noise, bioacoustics, physiological and psychological acoustics, speech, ocean acoustics, underwater sound, and acoustical signal processing.

- Abstract
Rational pharmacotherapy of the inner ear will become an important issue in treatment of inner ear diseases today and in the future. The contributions of some of the experts in the field are gathered in the present volume dedicated to all aspects of the pharmacology and the possible local and systemic treatment of inner ear diseases. Major topics include new aspects of human inner ear anatomy, neurotransmission, ion channels, vascular system, immunology, excitotoxicity, modulation of cell cycle, regeneration and differentiation, as well as new aspects of basic mechanisms at the cellular and molecular levels. A major feature of this volume is that it brings together both basic researchers and physicians to evaluate new experimental therapies and discuss future clinical strategies in the treatment of cochleo-vestibular disorders. Therefore, it will prove interesting to both scientists and clinicians in sensory physiology and auditory systems.

- Abstract
Inspired by the conference “Deaf People in Hitler's Europe, 1933–1945,” hosted jointly by Gallaudet University and the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in 1998, this extraordinary collection, organized into three parts, integrates key presentations and important postconference research. Henry Friedlander begins “Part I: Racial Hygiene” by analyzing the assault on deaf people and people with disabilities as an integral element in the Nazi attempt to implement their theories of racial hygiene. Robert Proctor documents the role of medical professionals in deciding who should be sterilized or forbidden to marry, and whom the Nazi authorities would murder. In an essay written especially for this volume, Patricia Heberer details how Nazi manipulation of eugenics theory and practice facilitated the justification for the murder of those considered socially undesirable. “Part II: The German Experience” commences with Jochen Muhs's interviews of deaf Berliners who lived under Nazi rule, both those who suffered abuse and those who, as members of the Nazi Party, persecuted others, especially deaf Jews. John S. Schuchman describes the remarkable 1932 film Misjudged People, which so successfully portrayed the German deaf community as a vibrant contributor to society that the Nazis banned its showing when they came to power. Horst Biesold's contribution confirms the complicity of teachers who denounced their own students, labeling them hereditarily deaf and thus exposing them to compulsory sterilization. The section also includes the reprint of a chilling 1934 article entitled “The Place of the School for the Deaf in the New Reich,” in which author Kurt Lietz rued the expense of educating deaf students, who could not become soldiers or bear “healthy children.” In “Part III: The Jewish Deaf Experience,” John S. Schuchman discusses the plight of deaf Jews in Hungary. His historical analysis is complemented by a chapter containing excerpts from the testimony of six deaf Jewish survivors who describe their personal ordeals. Peter Black's reflections on the need for more research conclude this vital study of a little-known chapter of the Holocaust.

- Abstract
Diseases of the Nose, Throat and Ear: For Practitioners and Students, Fourth Edition provides information pertinent to the fundamental aspects of the diseases of the ear, nose, and throat. This book discusses allergy and its allied conditions. Organized into six sections encompassing 41 chapters, this edition begins with an overview of anatomical structure of the nose. This text then explores the various processes of examination of the cavities of the nose, pharynx, larynx, and ear. Other chapters consider inference with phonation, which is one of the most common symptoms in affections of the larynx. Other chapters consider the sensitivity of the nasal mucous membrane to atmospheric changes, including temperature, humidity, sunshine, prevailing wind, and dust. This book discusses as well heliotherapy as a useful adjuvant to other treatment in nasal disease. The final chapter deals with the congenital defects of the labyrinth, which are responsible for the condition known as sporadic congenital deaf-mutism. This book is a valuable resource for clinicians.

- Abstract
With a total of more than 10,000 operated patients worldwide, the implantation of cochlear devices has become the most effective technique in the treatment and rehabilitation of individuals with sensorineural hearing loss. The number of cochlear implant users, notably in Asian countries, is expected to grow significantly within the next few years. For this reason, more than 250 of the most experienced clinicians and researchers from 22 different countries gathered in Kyoto convey the latest knowledge on every aspect of this forward-looking discipline. The topics discussed in this volume range from basic sciences, anatomy and pathology to coding strategies, surgical techniques as well as pre- and postoperative complications. In a special section, the reader will find inspiring contributions on pediatric cochlear implantation. Particular emphasis is put on the comparison and evaluation of the various devices and on how different languages influence the performance of these implants. This publication will be an important source of information for anybody who is involved in the field of cochlear implantation.

- Abstract
Zinc Ions in Ear, Nose, and Throat Work presents the method of effectively treating otorrhea. This three-chapter text discusses the means of applying electric current to the infected area to introduce zinc ions into the tissue. It addresses the progress made with the treatment and the use of this in treating maxillary and frontal sinusitis. Some of the topics covered in the book are the dissociation of atoms into ions; description of a simple voltaic cell; features and chemical reactions in an electrolytic cell; and source and regulation of the electric current. The next chapter provides the basic procedures of using the zinc ion treatment and the clinical application of zinc ionization and zinc electrolysis in chronic otorrhea. An evaluation of tympanic sepsis treatment and the analysis of tympanic conditions with rhinitis and tonsillitis are presented. The last chapter is devoted to zinc ionization in the post-operative treatment of cerebral abscess. The book can provide useful information to doctors, students, and researchers.

- Abstract
Born almost totally deaf, Philip Zazove has spent his entire life beating the odds first by excelling in public schools during an era when most deaf children went to special schools, then by aspiring to become a medical doctor. When the Phone Rings, My Bed Shakes is the remarkable story of his determination and achievement in realizing his dreams. Despite his stellar record at Northwestern University, Zazove was rejected by a host of medical schools. This only caused him to press harder, which won him acceptance at Rutgers University. He transferred to Washington University in St. Louis where, again against all advice, he decided to specialize in family practice. In vignettes of his patients, some amusing, others moving, he reveals the dedication and humanity that have made him a respected and well-loved doctor. His story will inspire all who read it.
