The blast resistance of a typical two-lane steel girder highway bridge structural system was modeled using a nonlinear finite-element approach that considered material damage, fracture, and separation. Critical blast scenarios were based on field observations of terrorist attacks on bridges in Iraq, while system failure was defined in terms of practical emergency serviceability criteria used on actual blast-damaged bridges. The blast resistance of various design parameters was assessed, including the number of girders, deck concrete strength, reinforcement ratio, slab thickness, girder and reinforcement yield strength, girder sectional dimensions, and pier column width. The presented approach uniquely quantifies structural system blast resistance in terms of the charge weight that can be applied at different locations until failure. A sensitivity analysis was conducted to determine the most influential design parameters. It was found that system blast capacity was primarily influenced by the number of girders and girder yield strength, while additional significant parameters were deck compressive strength, deck thickness, web stiffener width, and girder depth. Secondary parameters were deck reinforcement ratio, girder flange, and web thickness, while deck reinforcement yield stress was found to be insignificant. This study discusses the development of a procedure that can be used to assess the reliability of concrete masonry unit infill walls subjected to personnel-delivered blast loads. Consideration is given to maintain reasonable computational effort for both the structural analysis and reliability models. Blast load and wall resistance models are developed based on experimental and analytical data, and resistance is evaluated with a large strain, large displacement transient dynamic finite-element analysis. A sensitivity analysis is conducted to identify significant random variables and a reliability analysis conducted with a feasible level of computational effort. Reliability indices are estimated for two wall types and three design blast load levels in terms of wall failure as well as occupant injury, over various load frequency-of-occurrence times. The loads associated with Hurricane Katrina led to the destruction or severe damage of approximately 130,000 homes and over 200 deaths in the state of Mississippi. This paper discusses the results of a field inspection of structural damage along the state's Gulf Coast area caused by this hurricane. It was found that reinforced concrete, steel frame, and heavy timber structures generally performed well, with minimal structural damage. Precast concrete, light frame wood, and bridge structures generally performed poorly. Nonstructural components of all building types, in particular facades and interior partitions subjected to storm surge, were typically destroyed. For various structures, the primary cause of failure was found to be insufficient connection strength. A comparison of Katrina's storm surge and wind loads is made to those specified in current design standards. It was found that Katrina's forces exceeded those specified in design standards in many parts of the state. A reliability-based optimization procedure is developed and applied to minimize the weight of eight fiber-reinforced polymer composite bridge deck panel configurations. The method utilizes interlinked finite element, optimization, and reliability analysis procedures to solve the weight minimization problem with a deterministic strength constraint and two probabilistic deflection constraints. Panels are composed of an upper face plate, lower face plate, and a grid of interior stiffeners. Different panel depths and stiffener layouts are considered. Sensitivity analyses are conducted to identify significant design and random variables. Optimization design variables are panel component ply thicknesses, while random variables include load and material resistance parameters. It was found that panels were deflection governed, with the optimization algorithm yielding little improvement for shallow panels, but significant weight savings for deeper panels. The best design resulted in deep panels with close stiffener spacing to minimize local upper face plate deformations under the imposed traffic (wheel) loads. Concrete masonry unit walls subjected to blast pressure were analyzed with the finite element method, with the goal of developing a computatitonally efficient and accurate model. Wall behavior can be grouped into three modes of failure, which correspond to three ranges of blast pressures. Computational results were compared to high-speed video images and debris velocities obtained from experimental data. A parametric analysis was conducted to determine the sensitivity of computed results to critical modeling values. It was found that the model has the ability to replicate experimental results with good agreement. However, it was also found that, without knowledge of actual material properties of the specific wall to be modeled, computational results are not reliable predictors of wall behavior. Eamon This paper presents the results of a study on the combined shape and sizing optimisation of automotive structures while examining the effects of different design constraints and associated uncertainties on reliability and efficiency of the optimum designs. Nonlinear transient dynamic finite element analysis is used for full- and offset-frontal crash simulations of a full vehicle model. Surrogate models are developed for the intrusion distance and peak acceleration responses at different vehicle locations based on the material and geometric characteristics of the rail component. The obtained solutions provide insight on the effect of uncertainties in optimum design of automotive structures.
