Ocular health has emerged as one of the major issues of global health concern with a decline in quality of life in an aging population, in particular and rise in the number of associated morbidities and mortalities. One of the chief reasons for vision impairment is oxidative damage inflicted to photoreceptors in rods and cone cells by blue light as well as UV radiation. The scenario has been aggravated by unprecedented rise in screen-time during the COVID and post-COVID era. Lutein and Zeaxanthin are oxygenated carotenoids with proven roles in augmentation of ocular health largely by virtue of their antioxidant properties and protective effects against photobleaching of retinal pigments, age-linked macular degeneration, cataract, and retinitis pigmentosa. These molecules are characterized by their characteristic yellow-orange colored pigmentation and are found in significant amounts in vegetables such as corn, spinach, broccoli, carrots as well as fish and eggs. Unique structural signatures including tetraterpenoid skeleton with extensive conjugation and the presence of hydroxyl groups at the end rings have made these molecules evolutionarily adapted to localize in the membrane of the photoreceptor cells and prevent their free radical induced peroxidation. Apart from the benefits imparted to ocular health, lutein and zeaxanthin are also known to improve cognitive function, cardiovascular physiology, and arrest the development of malignancy. Although abundant in many natural sources, bioavailability of these compounds is low owing to their long aliphatic backbones. Under the circumstances, there has been a concerted effort to develop vegetable oil-based carriers such as lipid nano-emulsions for therapeutic administration of carotenoids. This review presents a comprehensive update of the therapeutic potential of the carotenoids along with the challenges in achieving an optimized delivery tool for maximizing their effectiveness inside the body. Lutein and zeaxanthin are the two most abundant natural xanthophylls (oxygenated carotenoids) with a linear C40 tetraterpene/isoprenoid lycopene-based backbone. Presence of extensive conjugation (more than 10 double bonds) enable these molecules to act as accessory light harvesting pigments apart from chlorophyll. More importantly, the xanthophylls prevent photobleaching of the pigments and proteins in the Light Harvesting Complex (LHC) by sequestering the excess unutilized blue light and preventing triplet chlorophyll associated formation of Reactive Oxygen Species. In human eye, lutein, zeaxanthin along with mesozeaxanthin constitute the three macular pigments forming the so called "yellow spot" of the macula and are implicated in maintaining the redox balance, homeostasis and normal physiology of the eyes. However, unlike plants, xanthophylls must be acquired from dietary sources such as colored leafy vegetables and egg yolk. Increase in the number of eye diseases in the aging population coupled with insufficient bioavailability of xanthophylls has mandated the industrial production of supplements enriched in xanthophylls. The bioavailability and delivery of xanthophylls can be significantly enhanced by suspension in a blend of extra-virgin olive oil and other vegetable oils. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The development of generic ophthalmic drug products with complex formulations is challenging due to the complexity of the ocular system and a lack of sensitive testing to evaluate the interplay of its physiology with ophthalmic drugs. New methods are needed to facilitate the development of ophthalmic generic drug products. Ocular physiologically based pharmacokinetic (O-PBPK) models can provide insight into drug partitioning in eye tissues that are usually not accessible and/or are challenging to sample in humans. This study aims to demonstrate the utility of an ocular PBPK model to predict human exposure following the administration of ophthalmic suspension. Besifloxacin (Bes) suspension is presented as a case study. The O-PBPK model for Bes ophthalmic suspension (Besivance® 0.6%) accounts for nasolacrimal drainage, suspended particle dissolution in the tears, ocular absorption, and distribution in the rabbit eye. A topical controlled release formulation was used to integrate the effect of Durasite® on Bes ocular retention. The model was subsequently used to predict Bes exposure after its topical administration in humans. Drug-specific parameters were used as validated for rabbits. The physiological parameters were adjusted to match human ocular physiology. Simulated human ocular pharmacokinetic profiles were compared with the observed ocular tissue concentration data to assess the OCAT models' ability to predict human ocular exposure. The O-PBPK model simulations adequately described the observed concentrations in the eye tissues following the topical administration of Bes suspension in rabbits. After adjustment of physiological parameters to represent the human eye, the extrapolation of clinical ocular exposure following a single ocular administration of Bes suspension was successful. This review article delves into the intricate roles of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the pathogenesis of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). It presents a detailed analysis of the oxidative stress mechanisms that contribute to the development and progression of these diseases. The review systematically explores the dual nature of ROS in ocular physiology and pathology, underscoring their essential roles in cellular signaling and detrimental effects when in excess. In the context of AMD, the focus is on the oxidative impairment in the retinal pigment epithelium and Bruch's membrane, culminating in the deterioration of macular health. Central to this review is the evaluation of various antioxidant strategies in the prevention and management of AMD. It encompasses a wide spectrum of antioxidants, ranging from dietary nutrients like vitamins C and E, lutein, and zeaxanthin to pharmacological agents with antioxidative properties. Tissue engineering (TE) is a field of science that combines biological, engineering, and medical sciences and allows the development of disease models, drug development and gene therapy studies, and even cellular or tissue-based treatments developed by engineering methods. The eye is an organ that is easily accessible and amenable to engineering applications, paving the way for TE in ophthalmology. TE studies are being conducted on a wide range of topics, including the tear film, eyelids, cornea, optic nerve, glaucoma, and retinal diseases. Corneal injury is associated with hypoxia-induced neovascularization, which interferes optical transparency of the cornea, resulting in vision loss and blindness. The treatment of corneal damage remains a significant unmet medical need. Lactoferrin (Lf) and angiostatins (AS) are naturally occurring antiinflammatory and antiangiogenic proteins, which play important roles in eye physiology and can be used as protectors against corneal diseases. The aim of the study was to evaluate and compare the effects of plasminogen fragment AS K1-3 and Lf (as a referent preparation) on the levels of the principal markers of angiogenesis, apoptosis, and autophagy in the burn-injured cornea. Additionally, effects of AS on the metabolic activity of macrophages have been studied. Materials and Мethods. Experimental model of corneal burn was induced by NaOH application to rabbit’s eye surface. One of the group of animals with injured cornea topically received AS, which were applied as eye drops (1 μM solution) daily for 14 days after injury, another one was treated by the equimolar solution of Lf. The levels of protein markers of angiogenesis (VEGF), apoptosis (caspase-3), and autophagy (beclin-1) were evaluated in corneal lysates by western blot. Histological analysis was performed by hematoxylin/eosin staining of corneal slices followed by light microscopy. Effects of AS in the range of concentrations 10–200 nM on the activity of phagocytic cells were assessed in murine macrophage cell line J744.2 by the test with nitroblue tetrazolium (NBT). The quantitative results were analysed with the use of Mann-Whitney U-test. The difference between group mean values was considered significant at P < 0.05. Results. Dramatically increased levels of protein markers related to angiogenesis, apoptosis, and autophagy were found in the corneas with burn-induced injury. AS or Lf-based treatment reduced burninduced overexpression of VEGF, caspase-3, and beclin-1. It is important to note that AS, along with anti-VEGF activity, appeared to more effectively suppress apoptosis and autophagy by decreasing tested markers near the control level, as compared with Lf. Histochemical examination revealed typical signs of fibrotic and necrotic changes in the injured corneas, which were associated with excessive inflammatory infiltration and intense neovascularization. Treatment of burn-induced injury with AS alleviated histopathological changes in cornea, which is evidenced by improving epithelial regeneration, reducing neovascularization, and moderating leucocyte infiltration. These observations are in agreement with the data of NBT test suggesting that AS in the concentrations >50 nM is able to moderately inhibit metabolic activity of macrophages up to 30% as compared with intact cells (P < 0.05). Obtained results indicate that AS may serve as an effective treatment option to relief alkali-induced corneal injury with the efficacy comparable or even higher than that of firmly established eye protective protein Lf. This study investigated how emotional valence of a perceived emotional state impacted performance on the Reading the Mind in the Eyes task (RMET) in adolescents with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and typically developing (TD) controls. Valence of items on the RMET, Adult (RMET-A) and Child (RMET-C) versions, was first classified in a survey of 113 medical students. Adolescents with ASD (N = 33) and TD adolescents (N = 30) were administered both RMET versions. Individuals with ASD made more errors than TD controls on positive and negative, but not neutral, valence items. The difference in performance was accentuated on the RMET-A compared to the RMET-C. Purpose: Lifestyle in the modern era has drastically changed across the globe, and the healthcare profession was no exception. The increased time spent in the virtual space for various purposes, including online classes and webinars, is hypothesized to increase the risk of vision-related disorders such as asthenopia, dry eyes, and visual fatigue. The purpose of this study was to evaluate fusional vergence and ocular accommodation among optometry professionals in a tertiary eye care center during the immediate post-coronavirus disease 2019 (post-COVID-19) lockdown period. Methods: Optometrists posted in the general out-patient department, specialty clinics, and the ocular diagnostics department were included in the study. A total of 65 optometrists were included in the study. All optometrists underwent a comprehensive binocular vision assessment. Convergence Insufficiency Symptom Survey questionnaires were administered to all optometrists at the beginning of the assessment. Results: Out of 65 optometrists, 48 (73.8%) were women. The mean (standard deviation) age of the participants was 24 (3) years. Eleven (16.9%) optometrists had normal binocular vision parameters, and the rest 54 (83.1%) had non-strabismic binocular vision anomalies. Reduced accommodative facility and convergence insufficiency were seen among 43 (66.2%) optometrists, whereas 30 (46.2%) had reduced accommodative facility alone. Twelve (18.5%) participants were symptomatic as per the convergence insufficiency symptom survey. Conclusion: This study highlights the fact that a large proportion of optometrists have undetected non-strabismic binocular vision anomalies in a tertiary eye care center. It is important for eye care professionals to undergo regular binocular vision assessments in association with ophthalmic examinations and relevant management. A limitation of the ability to rotate the head with respect to the upper body has been associated with turning problems; however, the extent of head constraints on whole-body coordination has not been fully determined. The aim of this study was to limit head on body rotation and observe the effects on whole-body coordination during standing turns at various speeds. Twelve participants completed standing turns at 180°. A Vicon motion system and a BlueGain Electrooculography system were used to record movement kinematics and measure horizontal eye movements, respectively. All participants were tested at 3 randomized speeds, and under 2 conditions with or without their head constrained using a head, neck, and chest brace which restricted neck movement. A repeated-measures analysis of variance found a significant main effect of turning speed on the onset latency of all segments, peak head–thorax angular separation, and step characteristics. Constraining the head rotation had multiple significant effects including delayed onset latency and decreased intersegmental coordination defined as peak head segmental angular separations, increased total step and step duration, and decreased step size. This study describes a pars plana incision surgical technique combined with 23 or 25-gauge vitrectomy in the management of intraocular foreign bodies (IOFBs) and to assess its anatomical and functional results. Sixteen patients with ocular trauma complicated with IOFB were enrolled in our study. The mean preoperative visual acuity was 2.01 ± 0.55 LogMAR, and the mean postoperative visual acuity at the final visit was improved to 0.91 ± 0.58 LogMAR (p < 0.001). Until the last follow-up, all IOFBs were successfully removed and anatomic success was obtained. Complications, such as endophthalmitis, silicone oil-dependent, and ocular hypotonia, were not observed. Microsurgical vitrectomy with modified pars plana incision is a safe and effective procedure in the treatment of retained IOFB, especially associated with transparent lens and posterior segment injury. Objective: The quality of life of people with multiple sclerosis (MS) is often affected by visual complaints. A previous study suggested that visual complaints are not likely to be related to specific visual functions, but by a global decline of cognitive and visual functioning. In this study, we further explore this hypothesis, by investigating the relation between visual functions and global cognitive functioning, aiming to provide recommendations for rehabilitation for visual complaints. Design: Cross-sectional study. Setting: A rehabilitation centre for partially sighted and blind people and a MS centre at a university hospital. Participants: 102 people with MS. Main measure: Correlations between assessments of visual functions (acuity, contrast sensitivity, visual field, smooth pursuit and saccades) and composite scores of a neuropsychological assessment (tests with a visual component and without a visual component). Results: All composite scores correlated with visual acuity, contrast sensitivity and the sensitivity of the monocular field, but not with smooth pursuit and saccades. Similar patterns were found in various subgroups. Results showed that visual functions that related to visual complaints correlated with a diffuse decline of global cognitive functioning and that visual and cognitive functioning may decline concurrently in people with MS. Conclusions: Visual complaints may occur as a result of a diffuse decline of the integrity of a cerebral network involved in vision and cognition. People with MS with visual complaints may benefit from neurovisual rehabilitation, in which low-vision rehabilitation and neuropsychological rehabilitation are closely intertwined. Myopia, a common ophthalmic disorder, places a high economic burden on individuals and society. Genetic and environmental factors influence myopia progression; however, the underlying mechanisms remain unelucidated. This paper reviews recent advances in circadian rhythm, intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (ipRGCs), and dopamine (DA) signalling in myopia and proposes the hypothesis of a circadian rhythm brain retinal circuit in myopia progression. The search of relevant English articles was conducted in the PubMed databases until June 2023. Based on the search, emerging evidence indicated that circadian rhythm was associated with myopia, including circadian genes Bmal1, Cycle, and Per. In both humans and animals, the ocular morphology and physiology show rhythmic oscillations. Theoretically, such ocular rhythms are regulated locally and indirectly via the suprachiasmatic nucleus, which receives signal from the ipRGCs. Compared with the conventional retinal ganglion cells, ipRGCs can sense the presence of light because of specific expression of melanopsin. Light, together with ipRGCs and DA signalling, plays a crucial role in both circadian rhythm and myopia. In summary, regarding myopia progression, a circadian rhythm brain retinal circuit involving ipRGCs and DA signalling has not been well established. Importance: Occupational therapy practitioners' knowledge of and advocacy for clients with visual symptoms postconcussion can have a considerable impact on recovery. Objective: To compare the frequency of vision symptoms and occupational performance deficits in a sample of participants with and without concussion. Design: Cross-sectional study. Setting: Sports medicine clinic. Participants: Adolescents and adults with concussion (n = 20) and musculoskeletal injuries (n = 19). Outcomes and Measures: Measures included monocular amplitude of accommodation, near point of convergence, Binocular Vision Assessment (BVA) computerized screening for phoria, BVA computerized screening for fusional vergence, the Developmental Eye Movement Test, the Canadian Occupational Performance Measure, and the Convergence Insufficiency Symptom Survey–Concussion Version (CISS–CON). Results: We found significant differences between participants with and without concussion using the CISS–CON (p =.001), positive fusional vergence (p =.02), and near point of convergence (p =.02). Participants with concussion scoring above cutoffs on multiple measures reported poorer performance (p =.005) and satisfaction (p =.004) with valued occupations. Conclusions and Relevance: Concussion has a detrimental effect on vision and occupation, and occupational therapy practitioners are well-positioned to assess and address issues arising from this relationship. Plain-Language Summary: Vision symptoms commonly experienced after a concussion are associated with reduced occupational performance and satisfaction and can have a considerable impact on recovery. Purpose. To analyze the distribution characteristics of axial length to corneal curvature radius ratio (AL/CR) and other ocular biometric parameters in adult myopia patients and their association with myopia. Methods. A cross-sectional study was conducted among patients with no eye diseases except ametropia who attended the optometry clinic of the First Affiliated Hospital of Hainan Medical College from January 2022 to June 2022. In total, 187 eyes (right eye) of 187 myopic patients aged 18–35 years were selected by random sampling. Based on the results of spherical equivalent (SE, (D)) obtained by postdilation optometry, all subjects were divided into three groups: mild myopia (≤−0.50D and >−3.00D, 42 eyes), moderate myopia (≤−3.00D and >−6.00D, 80 eyes), and high myopia (≤−6.00D, 65 eyes). The axial length (AL), corneal curvature radius (CR), and AL/CR were measured and compared between the three groups. The association between AL and AL/CR of the eye and SE was analyzed by multiple linear regression. Also, the predictive ability of AL/CR for high myopia was investigated by ROC curve. Results. There were no statistically significant differences in age, gender, or intraocular pressure between the three groups. The mean values of AL/CR in mild, moderate, and high myopia groups were 3.17 ± 0.06, 3.31 ± 0.08, and 3.43 ± 0.10, respectively, and the difference between the groups was statistically significant P < 0.001 ). Linear regression analysis showed that both AL and AL/CR were strongly negatively correlated with SE (P < 0.05), while CR had a weak positive correlation with SE without statistically significant differences (P > 0.05). The adjusted linear regression equation shows that for every 0.1 unit increase in AL/CR, SE increases by 1.54 D. Compared with 0.830 (95% confidence interval: 0.769 to 0.900) for AL, the area under ROC curve of AL/CR was 0.896 (95% confidence interval: 0.851 to 0.941), indicating that the diagnostic value of AL/CR for high myopia was higher than that of AL (P < 0.01). When the Youden index reached its maximum (0.626), the AL/CR cutoff point was 3.309, and the sensitivity and specificity were 0.954 and 0.672, respectively. Conclusion. This study showed that AL and AL/CR in adult myopia patients were significantly negatively correlated with SE, and the corralation between AL/CR and SE is greater than that between AL and SE. Therefore, AL/CR can be used to analyze the dynamic changes of SE in the development of adult myopia independently of optometry on a certain basis, and it is especially suitable for the diagnosis of high myopia in adults. To explore the potential role of microRNA miR-221-5p on the angiopoietin-1 (Ang-1)/Ang-2/Tie-2 signaling axis after subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) in a rat model. Aspects of the rat's behavior were measured using the Kaoutzanis scoring system to test neurological responses. This included feeding behavior, body contraction, motor, and eye-opening responses. Brain sections were studied using transmission electron microscopy and Evans blue extravasation. Levels of Ang-1, Ang-2, and Tie-2 were determined by Western blot, while miR-221-5p was quantified using stem-loop real-time quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR). The SAH group responded worse to the neurological response test than the sham-operated group. The intercellular space was widened in the SAH group, but not in the sham-operated group. Evans blue dye leaked significantly more into brain tissue cells of the SAH group. Stem-loop qRT-PCR showed elevated miR-221-5p levels. Additionally, Ang-1 and Tie-2 were reduced but Ang-2 expression was increased after SAH. This led to a significant reduction of the Ang-1/Ang-2 ratio in the brain tissue, which was associated with the destruction of the blood-brain barrier. The data indicate that miR-221-5p might regulate blood-brain barrier dysfunction through the Ang-1/Ang-2/Tie-2 signaling axis, suggesting that it should be further investigated as a potential novel biomarker. Two-photon excitation microscopy (TPM) and multiphoton fluorescence microscopy (MPM) are advanced forms of intravital high-resolution functional microscopy techniques that allow for the imaging of dynamic molecular processes and resolve features of the biological tissues of interest. Due to the cornea's optical properties and the uniquely accessible position of the globe, it is possible to image cells and tissues longitudinally to investigate ocular surface physiology and disease. MPM can also be used for the in vitro investigation of biological processes and drug kinetics in ocular tissues. In corneal immunology, performed via the use of TPM, cells thought to be intraepithelial dendritic cells are found to resemble tissue-resident memory T cells, and reporter mice with labeled plasmacytoid dendritic cells are imaged to understand the protective antiviral defenses of the eye. In mice with limbal progenitor cells labeled by reporters, the kinetics and localization of corneal epithelial replenishment are evaluated to advance stem cell biology. In studies of the conjunctiva and sclera, the use of such imaging together with second harmonic generation allows for the delineation of matrix wound healing, especially following glaucoma surgery. The optic nerve head (ONH) region at the posterior pole of the eye is supported by a fibrous structure of collagen fiber bundles. Discerning how the fibrous structure determines the region biomechanics is crucial to understand normal physiology, and the roles of biomechanics on vision loss. The fiber bundles within the ONH structure exhibit complex three-dimensional (3D) organization and continuity across the various tissue components. Computational models of the ONH, however, usually represent collagen fibers in a homogenized fashion without accounting for their continuity across tissues, fibers interacting with each other and other fiber-specific effects in a fibrous structure. We present a fibrous finite element (FFE) model of the ONH that incorporates discrete collagen fiber bundles and their histology-based 3D organization to study ONH biomechanics as a fibrous structure. The FFE model was constructed using polarized light microscopy data of porcine ONH cryosections, representing individual fiber bundles in the sclera, dura and pia maters with beam elements and canal tissues as continuum structures. The FFE model mimics the histological in-plane orientation and width distributions of collagen bundles as well as their continuity across different tissues. Modeling the fiber bundles as linear materials, the FFE model predicts the nonlinear ONH response observed in an inflation experiment from the literature. The model also captures important microstructural mechanisms including fiber interactions and long-range strain transmission among bundles that have not been considered before. The FFE model presented here advances our understanding of the role of fibrous collagen structure in the ONH biomechanics. The microstructure and mechanics of the optic nerve head (ONH) are central to ocular physiology. Histologically, the ONH region exhibits a complex continuous fibrous structure of collagen bundles. Understanding the role of the fibrous collagen structure on ONH biomechanics requires high-fidelity computational models previously unavailable. We present a computational model of the ONH that incorporates histology-based fibrous collagen structure derived from polarized light microscopy images. The model predictions agree with experiments in the literature, and provide insight into important microstructural mechanisms of fibrous tissue biomechanics, such as long-range strain transmission along fiber bundles. Background: Childhood myopia represents a global concern with increasing prevalence in recent decades. Lifestyle factors significantly impact myopia. Aim: To evaluate lifestyle factors in myopic children from a metropolitan area in Europe. Methods: This was a descriptive study including myopic subjects aged 4–18 years. Patient demographic and clinical data were collected, including cycloplegic refraction in spherical equivalent refraction (SER) and axial length (AL). In addition, a questionnaire on lifestyle factors was conducted between September 2022 and April 2023. Results: A total of 321 myopic children were included, aged 10.72 ± 3.05 years, of whom 51.4% were boys, with SER −2.25 ± 1.9 D and AL 24.54 ± 0.98 mm. The mean age of myopia onset was 7.69 ± 3.05 years. A total of 59.8% had family history of myopia. Those children who had <2 h/day of screen time (on weekdays) presented SER −2 ± 1.91 D, compared to those who had >2 h/day, SER: −2.50 ±1.88 D (p = 0.009). Children who spent <2 h/day doing near work after school were less myopic compared to those who spent >2 h/day (SER: −1.75 ± 1.83 vs. SER: −2.75 ± 1.82, respectively, p = 0.03). However, no significant association was observed between SER and AL and time spent outdoors nor between SER and AL and academic performance (p > 0.05). Purpose. To assess the differences in accommodation and binocular vision in children with myopic anisometropia and determine the correlation with anisometropia. Method. A total of 110 patients with myopia aged 8–15 years were recruited from June 2021 to February 2022 from the Affiliated Hospital of Xuzhou Medical University. Based on the interocular differences of spherical equivalent refraction, patients were divided into the isometropia (35 children), low anisometropia (LA group, 42 children), and high anisometropia (HA group, 33 children). The variables assessed were refraction, heterophoria, amplitude of accommodation (AMP), accommodative response (AR), gradient AC/A, positive and negative relative accommodation (PRA/NRA), and near stereopsis in the three groups. Pearson's correlation coefficient tests were used to investigate the possible association between each parameter and interocular differences (IODs). Results. Among 110 subjects, there were 49 males and 61 females with a mean age of 11.39 ± 2.28 years. Compared with those in the isometropia group, AMP was lower and near stereopsis was higher in the LA group, and the distance and near heterophoria, PRA, AR, and near stereopsis were higher, and PRA, AMP, and gradient AC/A were lower in the HA group (all P < 0.05). Compared with those in the LA group, the near stereopsis, AR, and the near stereopsis were higher in the HA group, and the gradient AC/A was lower (all P < 0.05). However, no significant differences existed in the negative relative accommodation (P > 0.05). The distance and near heterophoria, AR, AMP, and near stereopsis were observed to be correlated with IODs, respectively (r = −0.259, p = 0.006 ; r = −0.201, p = 0.036 ; r = 0.306, p = 0.001 ; r = −0.315, p = 0.001 ; r = 0.535, p < 0.001). Conclusion. Our results suggested that with the increase of anisometropia, distance and near heterophoria, AR, AMP, and near stereopsis had a tendency to get worse in children with myopic anisometropia. Objective: This study aims to examine the effects of virtual reality (VR) usage on the eyes and investigate the parameters responsible for the subsequent discomfort sensation. Materials and Methods: This prospective study enrolled 20 healthy volunteers who were engaged in a 10-minute VR game session. Refractive errors, kappa angles, phoria presence, accommodative responses, and scotopic, mesopic, and photopic pupillometry values were recorded before and after using VR. A Virtual Reality Sickness Questionnaire (VRSQ) was applied to assess discomfort, and the relation with evaluated parameters was investigated. Results: Twenty volunteers (mean age 29.80±0.57 years) included 11 females (55%) and 9 males (45%). The mean spherical equivalent refractive error was -- 1.94±0.28 diopters and 5 (25%) volunteers had phoria. Average kappa angles were 0.23±0.02 mm (x-axis) and 0.11±0.01 mm (y-axis). Post-VR, the median [(interquartile range (IQR)] stereopsis decreased from 30 (30-60) to 60 (60-60) arc seconds (P<0.001). Pupil sizes increased significantly across all lighting conditions (P<0.001). Accommodation did not significantly change post-VR (P>0.05). VRSQ scores correlated positively with phoria and kappa-x angle (r=0.458, P=0.003 and r=0.330, P=0.038) while negatively with stereopsis and kappa-y angle (r=-0.375, P=0.017 and r=-0.326, P=0.04). Conclusion: Virtual reality use reduces depth perception and induces significant mydriasis across lighting conditions. Objective: The study aimed to evaluate the influence of ocular dominance, clinical experience, and sex on the accuracy of visual color matching. Method and materials: A total of 104 selected participants consisting of dental students and dental practitioners were allocated into two groups based on their clinical experience of using visual shade matching tabs for the selection of tooth shade. Both the inexperienced (IXP), as well as experienced participants (EXP), were then asked to correctly match the shades of five tabs (A2, A3.5, B1, C2, and D3) of a commonly used visual shade guide (Vitapan Classical shade guide, VITA Zahnfabrik) that were kept constant throughout the study. The participants documented the shade of those tabs using another set of shade guide using the right eye (left eye covered), left eye (right eye covered), as well as both eyes. Test for ocular dominance was performed using the Dolman method. The results were statistically analyzed using the chi-square test with a level of signifi- cance set at < .05. Results: The percentage of correct shade matching with the monocular dominant vision (53%) was signifi- cantly better as compared to the monocular non- dominant vision (12%) (P < .001) or binocular vision (44%) (P < .05). Sex had an influence in shade selection (P = .031). However, clinical experience was an insignificant aspect in shade matching (P = .078). Conclusions: Knowing the clinician's dominant eye can be clinically relevant, as it can influence the accuracy of shade selection, irrespective of sex and clinical experience. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recently, a Y727C variant in the dual-specific 3′,5′-cyclic nucleotide phosphodiesterase 11A (PDE11A-Y727C) was linked to increased sleep quality and reduced myopia risk in humans. Given the well-established role that the PDE11 substrates cAMP and cGMP play in eye physiology and sleep, we determined if (1) PDE11A protein is expressed in the retina or other eye segments in mice, (2) PDE11A-Y7272C affects catalytic activity and/or subcellular compartmentalization more so than the nearby suicide-associated PDE11A-M878V variant, and (3) Pde11a deletion alters eye growth or sleep quality in male and female mice. Western blots show distinct protein expression of PDE11A4, but not PDE11A1-3, in eyes of Pde11a WT, but not KO mice, that vary by eye segment and age. In HT22 and COS-1 cells, PDE11A4-Y727C reduces PDE11A4 catalytic activity far more than PDE11A4-M878V, with both variants reducing PDE11A4-cAMP more so than PDE11A4-cGMP activity. Despite this, Pde11a deletion does not alter age-related changes in retinal or lens thickness or axial length, nor vitreous or anterior chamber depth. Further, Pde11a deletion only minimally changes refractive error and sleep quality. That said, both variants also dramatically alter the subcellular compartmentalization of human and mouse PDE11A4, an effect occurring independently of dephosphorylating PDE11A4-S117/S124 or phosphorylating PDE11A4-S162. Rather, re-compartmentalization of PDE11A4-Y727C is due to the loss of the tyrosine changing how PDE11A4 is packaged/repackaged via the trans-Golgi network. Therefore, the protective impact of the Y727C variant may reflect a gain-of-function (e.g., PDE11A4 displacing another PDE) that warrants further investigation in the context of reversing/preventing sleep disturbances or myopia. Bayer Color-Filter-Array (CFA) is commonly used in single-chip digital image sensors as it efficiently approximates the physiology of the human eye. These sensors capture only one color component per pixel, not an entire RGB image. Conventionally, a Bayer CFA image is converted to an RGB image, and then compressed for processing and storage. However, storing a Bayer CFA image before converting to RGB can preserve more details, which is preferable for post-processing tasks. Due to the arrangement of color channels in a CFA image, compression algorithms cannot efficiently reduce the size of the raw CFA image. In this paper, a Cascade Overlapping Color Transformation (COCT) method is proposed and implemented. In the first step, the Haar Wavelet Transform (HWT) is performed on the image to reduce the spectral redundancy. The second step of the color transformation reduces the redundancy of color components even higher, resulting in a color map that can be compressed better using an image coding system. Experiments performed on several datasets showed that the COCT improves the compression ratio compared to the state-of-the-art techniques. The proposed method improved the compression ratio by 17.6% and 15.6% for 16 bpp and 8 bpp CFA images, respectively. Computational load has also been improved by the proposed method. In addition, the hardware implementation is discussed using a CMOS 65 nm technology that costs 3.18 K gates and 2.05 mW of power. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We report a technique of fixation of rotational flap of the conjunctiva in primary surgical treatment of pterygium using a biodegradable adhesive Diplen membrane. A 78 years old patient was referred to ophthalmology department in September 2022 for treatment of pterygium of right eye. Primary pterygium surgery was performed using fixed rotational flap of the conjunctiva. In this method, the conjunctival flap is rotated to close the open sclera and fixed with a biodegradable adhesive Diplen membrane. The flap did not undergo ischemic changes, retained its original position and fully took root. Inflammatory and allergic reactions to the components of the membrane were not observed. Seamless fixation of conjunctival flap using an adhesive Diplen membrane is a safe, cost-effective and reliable method of treating pterygium. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: To compare the central corneal thickness (CCT), minimum corneal thickness (MCT) and corneal power measured using the Scheimpflug-Placido device and optical coherence tomography (OCT) in healthy eyes. Study Design: Descriptive observational. Place and Duration of Study: Al-Kindy college of medicine/university of Baghdad, from June 2021 to April 2022. Methods: A total of 200 eyes of 200 individuals were enrolled in this study. CCT and MCT measurements were carried out using spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (Optovue) and a Scheimpflug-Placido topographer (Sirius). The agreement between the two approaches was assessed using Bland-Altman analysis in this study. Results: Mean age was 28.54 ± 6.6 years, mean spherical equivalent of refraction was -3.57 ± 3.35 D. Mean CCT by Optovue, and Sirius were 534.13 ± 27.88 μm, and 540.2 ± 27.85 μm, respectively. Mean CCT differences between them were -6.070 ± 6.593 μm, (p < 0.05). Minimum thickness by Optovue was 526.79 ± 27.81, and by Sirius was 537.44 ± 27.56, mean difference between the two devices was 10.66 ± 6.89, p = 0.00. The net power by OCT was 43.44 ± 1.456, mean K by Sirius was 43.597 ± 1.408, with p = 0.000. Maximum level of agreement between the two devices is -18.99 to 6.85 for CCT, is widest for minimum thickness -24.166 to 2.85 and narrowest for differences between net corneal power by OCT and mean K By Sirius is -0.87 to 1.18. Conclusion: In clinical practice, the two devices cannot be used interchangeably. CCT and keratometry should be evaluated and followed up using the same device. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Psychologists have long been interested in the underlying visual perceptual processes associated with forming responses to certain psychological tests, including the Rorschach Ink Blot Test, which modern users conceptualize as a conceptual problem-solving task. Accordingly, we used eye tracking technology to assess the internal consistency of saccadic responses to both the Rorschach Ink Blot Test and a facial expression task. Internal consistency was highest for eye Fixation Duration (FD) and Saccade Amplitude (SA), and both FD and SA measures in the Rorschach were positively related to the same measures in the facial expression task. Given this high internal consistency of FD and SA for viewing Rorschach ink blots and viewing pictures from well-known collections of facial expressions, and given high correlations between these eye tracking measures across the two tasks, FD and SA may now be used in further studies of eye movements in visuo-attentive psychological/neuropsychological tests (e.g., the Thematic Apperception Test). Reliability of these eye movement measures across tasks enables their use for better understanding of underlying visual processes and improved interpretations of the meaning of behavioral responses to psychological/neuropsychological tests. Previous studies have reported an increased postural sway after short-term unilateral lower limb movement restriction, even in healthy subjects. However, the associations of motion limitation have not been fully established. The question of whether short-term lower limb physical inactivity and movement restriction affect postural control in the upright position remains. One lower limb of each participant was fixed with a soft bandage and medical splint for 10 h while the participant sat on a manual wheelchair. The participants were instructed to stand still for 60 s under eyes-open (EO) and eyes-closed (EC) conditions. Using a single force plate signal, we measured the center of pressure (COP) signal in the horizontal plane and calculated the total, anterior–posterior (A–P), and medial–lateral (M–L) path lengths, sway area, and mean COP displacements in A–P and M–L directions. The COP sway increased and the COP position during the upright stance shifted from the fixed to the non-fixed side after cast removal, compared to before the cast application, under both EO and EC conditions. These findings indicated that 10 h of unilateral lower limb movement restriction induced postural instability and postural control asymmetry, suggesting the acute adverse effects of cast immobilization. Purpose: MRI is increasingly used in the diagnosis and therapy planning of uveal melanoma (UM). In this prospective cohort study, we assessed the radiological characteristics, in terms of anatomical and functional imaging, of UM after ruthenium-106 plaque brachytherapy or proton beam therapy (PBT) and compared them to conventional ultrasound. Methods: Twenty-six UM patients were evaluated before and 3, 6 and 12 months after brachytherapy (n = 13) or PBT (n = 13). Tumour prominences were compared between ultrasound and MRI. On diffusion-weighted imaging, the apparent diffusion value (ADC), and on perfusion-weighted imaging (PWI), the time-intensity curves (TIC), relative peak intensity and outflow percentages were determined. Values were compared between treatments and with baseline. Results: Pre-treatment prominences were comparable between MRI and ultrasound (mean absolute difference 0.51 mm, p = 0.46), but larger differences were observed post-treatment (e.g. 3 months: 0.9 mm (p = 0.02)). Pre-treatment PWI metrics were comparable between treatment groups. After treatment, brachytherapy patients showed favourable changes on PWI (e.g. 67% outflow reduction at 3 months, p < 0.01). After PBT, significant perfusion changes were observed at a later timepoint (e.g. 38% outflow reduction at 6 months, p = 0.01). No consistent ADC changes were observed after either treatment, e.g. a 0.11 × 10−3mm2/s increase 12 months after treatment (p = 0.15). Conclusion: MR-based follow-up is valuable for PBT-treated patients as favourable perfusion changes, including a reduction in outflow, can be detected before a reduction in size is apparent on ultrasound. For brachytherapy, a follow-up MRI is of less value as already 3 months post-treatment a significant size reduction can be measured on ultrasound. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Humans recognize familiar faces highly accurately. However, it is unclear precisely what information is stored in the underlying long-term face representations. While some have emphaszsed the importance of the eye region, other evidence has shown that faces are processed as integrated wholes. We examined the role of the eye region in activating familiar face representations using the N250r, an event-related potential correlate of repetition priming. We presented blur chimeras, i.e., spatially low-pass filtered faces with unfiltered eye regions, and observed a clear N250r which was absent for fully blurred faces (Experiments 1 and 2). However, we observed a similar N250r for chimeras with unfiltered eye or mouth regions (Experiment 3), indicating that the effect is not exclusive to the eyes. We conclude that the efficient activation of face representations is not specifically facilitated by detailed information from the eye region, and that face representations are not centred around the eyes. The extracellular matrix (ECM) is a noncellular structure that plays an indispensable role in a series of cell life activities. Accumulating studies have demonstrated that ECM stiffness, a type of mechanical forces, exerts a pivotal influence on regulating organogenesis, tissue homeostasis, and the occurrence and development of miscellaneous diseases. Nevertheless, the role of ECM stiffness in ophthalmology is rarely discussed. In this review, we focus on describing the important role of ECM stiffness and its composition in multiple ocular structures (including cornea, retina, optic nerve, trabecular reticulum, and vitreous) from a new perspective. The abnormal changes in ECM can trigger physiological and pathological activities of the eye, suggesting that compared with different biochemical factors, the transmission and transduction of force signals triggered by mechanical cues such as ECM stiffness are also universal in different ocular cells. We expect that targeting ECM as a therapeutic approach or designing advanced ECM-based technologies will have a broader application prospect in ophthalmology. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A leading reason for patients to abandon their contact lenses is discomfort. Mechanisms and biomarkers for lens discomfort remain to be elucidated. Physical stress and tear film interaction are likely factors for lens discomfort. Lipid mediators are generated from polyunsaturated fatty acids. They regulate ocular surface physiology and pathophysiology, are constituents of human tears and may interact with contact lenses. This study set out to determine if hydrogel lenses and silicone hydrogel lenses interact with tear film polyunsaturated fatty acids and polyunsaturated fatty acids-derived mediators. In vitro incubations, rat experiments and analysis of worn human lenses assessed polyunsaturated fatty acids and lipid mediator interactions with lenses. Silicone hydrogel and hydrogel lenses were incubated with lipid mediators and polyunsaturated fatty acids up to 24 hours. Rats were fitted with custom silicone hydrogel lenses and basal tears collected. Silicone hydrogel lenses worn for 2 weeks were obtained from 57 human subjects. Tear and lens lipidomes were quantified by mass spectrometry. Silicone hydrogel lenses retained polyunsaturated fatty acids and lipid mediators within 15 minutes in vitro. Lenses contained 90% of total polyunsaturated fatty acids and 83–89% of total monohydroxy fatty acids by 12 hours. Retention correlated with polarity of lipid mediators and lipophilic properties of silicone hydrogel lenses. Polyunsaturated fatty acids and lipid mediators such as lipoxygenase- and cyclooxygenase-derived eicosanoids were present in tears and worn lenses from rats. Worn silicone hydrogel lenses from human subjects established robust and lens-type specific lipidomes with high levels of polyunsaturated fatty acids, lipoxygenase-pathway markers and subject-specific differences in lipoxin A4 and leukotriene B4. Worn silicone hydrogel lenses rapidly retain and accumulate tear polyunsaturated fatty acids and lipid mediators. Marked subject and lens type differences in the lipidome may document changes in ocular surface physiology, cell activation or infection that are associated with lens wear. In this study, virtual reality technology was used to simulate the virtual scene of three common light environment forms of professional classrooms in universities. The experimental results show that people's environmental perception is related to the average pupil diameter, saccade frequency, high frequency/low frequency (LF/HF) and skin conductance change rate in a combined light environment; moreover, when the colour temperature is 4500 K, the space is brighter, more spacious, more relaxed and the willingness to learn is stronger. In the range of 22.4°C–25°C, temperature does not affect people's perception of the warm feeling of the light environment, while the light colour temperature has a greater impact on people's perception of the warm feeling. The lower the light colour temperature is, the warmer people feel subjectively. However, people's eye movement behaviour and physiological system data have no obvious perception of colour temperature changes. Indoor noise affects the indoor brightness perception to some extent. In the range of 43–46.9 dB, with the increase of noise value, the evaluation score of people's brightness perception basically increases. A highlight of these developments can be seen in the context of vision, where pioneering studies have uncovered fundamental and generalizable principles of sensory processing. Here we begin with an overview of vision-guided behaviors and common methods for probing visual circuits. We then outline the anatomy and physiology of brain regions involved in visual processing, beginning at the sensory periphery and ending with descending motor control. Areas of focus include contrast and motion detection in the optic lobe, circuits for visual feature selectivity, computations in support of spatial navigation, and contextual associative learning. Ocular inflammation is commonly associated with eye disease or injury. Effective and sustained ocular delivery of therapeutics remains a challenge due to the eye physiology and structural barriers. Herein, we engineered a photocrosslinkable adhesive patch (GelPatch) incorporated with micelles (MCs) loaded with loteprednol etabonate (LE) for delivery and sustained release of drug. The engineered drug loaded adhesive hydrogel, with controlled physical properties, provided a matrix with high adhesion to the ocular surfaces. The incorporation of MCs within the GelPatch enabled solubilization of LE and its sustained release within 15 days. In vitro studies showed that MC loaded GelPatch supported cell viability and growth. In addition, subcutaneous implantation of the MC loaded GelPatch in rats confirmed its in vivo biocompatibility and stability within 28 days. This non‐invasive, adhesive, and biocompatible drug eluting patch can be used as a matrix for the delivery and sustained release of hydrophobic drugs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background. The change in refraction caused by accommodation inevitably affects the peripheral defocus state and thus may influence the effect of retinal peripheral myopic defocus measures in myopia control. This study investigated accommodation changes in different peripheral retinas under cycloplegia to help improve myopia control. Methods. Fifty-six eyes of fifty-six myopic subjects were recruited for this prospective study. The center and peripheral retina refractions were measured using multispectral refractive topography. The subjects were divided into low-to-moderate myopia group (range: −1.25 D to −6.00 D) and high myopia group (range: −6.25 D to −9.75 D) according to spherical equivalent (SE). The compound tropicamide (0.5% tropicamide and 0.5% phenylephrine) was used to relax the accommodation. The difference between cycloplegia and non-cycloplegia peripheral retinal refraction was analyzed using the t-test. The correlation between eccentricity and changes in peripheral refraction was analyzed using Pearson's correlation analysis. Results. The manifest refraction of the retina significantly decreased with an increase in eccentricity after cycloplegia. The annular refraction difference value at 50°–53° (ARDV 50–53) showed the largest refraction decrease of 1.31 D compared with the central retinal refraction decrease of 0.84 D. The inferior quadrantal refraction difference value had the least change compared to the other quadrants. The relative peripheral refraction (RPR) changes in refraction difference value (RDV) at 15° (RDV-15), RDV-30, and RDV-45 were less than 0.15 D. When the range of annulus narrowed to 5°, the narrower annulus showed faster change with eccentricity increase in ARDV 30–35, ARDV 35–40, ARDV 40–45, ARDV 45–50, and ARDV 50–53. The RPR was highly correlated with eccentricity (R = 0.938 and P < 0.001). The high myopia group had a greater hyperopic shift in the periphery than the low-to-moderate group after cycloplegia. Conclusions. Peripheral refraction showed a significant hyperopic shift after cycloplegia with an increase in eccentricity. The RPR became more hyperopic than the central refraction. Currently, much attention is paid to measuring the temperature of the ocular surface in various ophthalmic diseases. However, for a comprehensive assessment of heat transfer of the eye, it is advisable to measure both the ocular surface temperature and the heat flux (HF) density. This will expand our knowledge of the physiology of the eye and create new possibilities for diagnosing ocular pathology. The present study aimed to develop a thermoelectric device to study rabbits' ocular surface temperature and HF density. The multichannel thermoelectric device was developed to measure the ocular surface temperature and HF density. This study included ten rabbits (20 eyes). In all animals, the temperature and the HF density were measured on the surface of the central cornea of both eyes. The measurement was repeated after pupils' dilation. The corneal surface temperature of rabbits was 33.1 ± 0.8 °C, and the HF density of the surface of the cornea was 8.3 ± 0.6 mW/cm2. Our results revealed a high degree of interocular symmetry in the surface HF density in healthy rabbits. After pupil dilation, an increase in the HF density on the surface of the rabbit cornea compared with the initial data and control eye was noted. The application of the developed device showed that it is safe and allows for the measurement of the ocular surface temperature and the HF density. We believe that further studies on the ocular surface HF density measurement in various eye diseases will allow us to evaluate the possibilities of this device and technique for diagnostic purposes. Blue-hazard-free lighting is in urgent need in order to protect human eyes and physiology. A candlelight-style organic light emitting diode (OLED) is so far the safest measure for its blue-hazard-free, low-color-temperature illumination. However, lifetime is still the most critical reliability issue in OLEDs, especially in lighting applications that are closely associated with high current density operation. Here, we present a novel approach to develop blue-hazard-free OLEDs with a lifetime exceeding 200,000 h at 1000 cd/m2 by employing a tandem structure with ultra-high purity emitter. The resultant device shows a current efficacy of 37.4 cd/A, an external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 22.7%, an 80 CRI, and a 78 SRI with a 223,500 h lifetime (t50). Additionally, the resultant device also exhibits a long retina exposure duration of 12,300 s (3.42 h) and suppresses very less melatonin generation (1.7%), demonstrating that the fabricated OLED device is a highly prospective general lighting source to safeguard human health. The porcine ocular surface is used as a model of the human ocular surface; however, a detailed characterization of the porcine ocular surface has not been documented. This is due, in part, to the scarcity of antibodies produced specifically against the porcine ocular surface cell types or structures. We performed a histological and immunohistochemical investigation on frozen and formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded ocular surface tissue from domestic pigs using a panel of 41 different antibodies related to epithelial progenitor/differentiation phenotypes, extracellular matrix and associated molecules, and various niche cell types. Our observations suggested that the Bowman's layer is not evident in the cornea; the deep invaginations of the limbal epithelium in the limbal zone are analogous to the limbal interpalisade crypts of human limbal tissue; and the presence of goblet cells in the bulbar conjunctiva. Immunohistochemistry analysis revealed that the epithelial progenitor markers cytokeratin (CK)15, CK14, p63α, and P-cadherin were expressed in both the limbal and conjunctival basal epithelium, whereas the basal cells of the limbal and conjunctival epithelium did not stain for CK3, CK12, E-cadherin, and CK13. Antibodies detecting marker proteins related to the extracellular matrix (collagen IV, Tenascin-C), cell–matrix adhesion (β-dystroglycan, integrin α3 and α6), mesenchymal cells (vimentin, CD90, CD44), neurons (neurofilament), immune cells (HLA-ABC; HLA-DR, CD1, CD4, CD14), vasculature (von Willebrand factor), and melanocytes (SRY-homeobox-10, human melanoma black-45, Tyrosinase) on the normal human ocular surface demonstrated similar immunoreactivity on the normal porcine ocular surface. Only a few antibodies (directed against N-cadherin, fibronectin, agrin, laminin α3 and α5, melan-A) appeared unreactive on porcine tissues. Our findings characterize the main immunohistochemical properties of the porcine ocular surface and provide a morphological and immunohistochemical basis useful to research using porcine models. Furthermore, the analyzed porcine ocular structures are similar to those of humans, confirming the potential usefulness of pig eyes to study ocular surface physiology and pathophysiology. Objective: To describe normative ocular surface and aqueous tear testing data for cats of various cephalic conformation. Animals studied: Fifty‐three healthy adult cats (11 British Shorthair, 11 Burmese, 10 Devon Rex, 10 Scottish Fold, and 11 Sphynx). Procedures: Blink rate, corneal tactile sensation (CTS), and Schirmer tear test with or without topical anesthesia (STT‐1, STT‐2) and with nasolacrimal stimulation (NL‐STT1, NL‐STT2) were assessed. Palpebral fissure length (PFL) and skull morphology were measured, and cephalic index (CI) and craniofacial ratio (CFR) calculated. Results: Mean ± SD test results were as follows: blink rate (5.0 ± 2.3 blinks/min), CTS (3.2 ± 0.7 cm), STT‐1 (11.2 ± 4.3 mm/min), STT‐2 (6.7 ± 3.6 mm/min), NL‐STT1 (13.4 ± 5.7 mm/min), NL‐STT2 (13.5 ± 5.2 mm/min), and PFL (2.0 ± 0.2 cm). Corneal sensitivity did not differ significantly among breeds (p =.152) but was negatively correlated with body weight (r = −.32, p =.019). STT‐1 significantly differed among breeds (p <.001) and was lowest in Sphynx cats (8.7 ± 4.3 mm/min). A positive correlation was detected between STT‐1 values at 30 and 60 s (r =.98; p <.001). The nasolacrimal reflex significantly increased STT in anesthetized and unanesthetized eyes (approximately +100% and +20%, respectively; p ≤.002). STT‐1 tended to be higher in intact versus neutered cats (p =.062). Age did not impact any test result (p ≥.085). Conclusions: Normative data described here serve as a baseline for future studies assessing ocular surface disease in multiple feline breeds. Objective: The exposure to constant light during the hospitalization was investigated to verify its influence on the daily rhythmicity of Schirmer tear test I (STT I) in the Felis catus. Animal studied: One group (HG—hospitalized group) was consisted of 10 owned‐cats hospitalized to perform a sterilization procedure and was exposed to a 24/0 light/dark (L/D) cycle; the cat control group (CG) was consisted of 10 staff‐owned cats living in an indoor environment (12/12 L/D cycle). Procedure: The STT I values was performed at 4 h intervals over a 48 h period (starting at 8:00 a.m. on Day 1 and finishing at 8:00 a.m. on Day 3) on the left (LE) and right (RE) eyes into two cat groups. A 35 x 5 mm commercial tear test strip was used to record tear production in millimeters wetting per minute (mm/min). Results: Multivariate for repeated measure analysis of variance (ANOVA) showed a statistically significant effect of time. No difference was found between LE and RE tear production, and between the two experimental conditions. Robust daily rhythmicity was exhibited by the STT I in both eyes during the entire monitoring period in control cats and only during the Day 1 in hospitalized cats. Conclusions: These data are a starting point for evaluating the imbalance of ocular physiology observed in hospitalized cats. Further studies on larger sample size and exposing the animals to various hospitalization procedures are needed to establish whether these alterations are caused by hospitalization procedures or by the light/dark schedules. Visual exploration (scanning) of one's environment is a key aspect in team sports. Based on Gibson's (1979) ecological approach of visual perception, this study aims to advance the understanding of scanning by focusing on the direction of head movements in football and its implications for subsequent on-ball actions. The video-based data analysis consisted of nine selected matches and 162 players of the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) U17 and U21 European Championship 2019. The results indicate that the direction of the last scan prior to receiving the ball is related to the foot used for the first ball contact. This relationship was further analysed in view of the game context (direction of play and opponent pressure) and with information about the player's dominant foot. The findings reveal a relationship between the direction of the last scan before receiving the ball and the direction the game is proceeded in. Further, when a player performs the last scan to the side of their dominant foot, the probability increases that their dominant foot is used for the subsequent first ball contact. Depending on the direction of the last scan, opponent pressure had various effects on the foot used for the first contact. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Exocrine meibomian glands (MGs) play a central role in the ocular physiology and biochemistry by producing in situ and, mostly, de novo a secretion (meibum), which is composed of a complex mixture of homologous lipids of various classes, in a metabolic pathway termed meibogenesis. Recent in vivo experiments with a number of mouse models demonstrated that inactivation of any of the major genes of meibogenesis led to alterations in the lipid composition of meibum and severe ocular and MG abnormalities that replicated various human ocular pathologies. However, the role of dietary lipids in meibogenesis, and in the onset and/or alleviation of these diseases, remains controversial. To uncover the role of dietary lipids, the metabolic transformations of a dietary lipid tracer--stable isotope-labeled glyceryl tri(oleate-1,2,3,7,8-13C5) (13C15-TO)--were investigated using liquid chromatography-high-resolution mass spectrometry. We demonstrated that major metabolic transformations of the tracer occurred in the stomach and small intestines where 13C15-TO underwent immediate and extensive transesterification into 13C5- and 13C10-substituted triacylglycerols of various lengths, giving a mixture of 13Clabeled compounds that remain virtually unchanged in the mouse plasma, liver, and white adipose tissue but were almost undetectable in the feces. Importantly, the tracer and its metabolites were virtually undetectable in MGs, even after 4 weeks of daily supplementation. Notably, unbiased principal component analysis of the data revealed no measurable changes in the overall chemical composition of meibum after the treatment, which implies no direct effect of dietary triacylglycerols on meibogenesis, and left their systemic effects as the most likely mechanism. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are highly conserved, small non-coding RNA molecules (~21 nucleotides) that regulate numerous biological processes, including developmental timing, hematopoiesis, organogenesis, apoptosis, cell differentiation, and proliferation either by mRNA degradation or translation repression. Since eye physiology requires a perfect orchestration of complex regulatory networks, an altered expression of key regulatory molecules such as miRNAs potentially leads to numerous eye disorders. In recent years, comprehensive progress has been made in demonstrating the precise roles of miRNAs, emphasizing their potential use in diagnostic and therapeutic purposes of chronic human diseases. Thus, this review explicitly illustrates the regulatory roles of miRNAs in four common eye disorders, such as cataract, glaucoma, macular degeneration, and uveitis, and their application in disease management.
