In many seasonally breeding birds, female and male testosterone (T) levels peak at the start of the breeding season, coinciding with pair bonding and nesting activities. Shortly after the onset of egg laying, T levels slowly decline to baseline levels in both sexes, but more rapidly so in females. During this period, T in males may still function to facilitate territorial behaviour, mate guarding and extra pair copulations, either via short lasting peaks or elevated basal levels of the hormone. In some species, however, males become insensitive to increased T after the onset of egg laying. It has been postulated that in these species bi-parental care is essential for offspring survival, as T is known to inhibit paternal care. However, only very few studies have analysed this for females. As females are heavily involved in parental care, they too might become insensitive to T after egg laying. Alternatively, because territorial defence, mate guarding and extra pair copulations are expected to be less important for females than for males, they may not have had the need to evolve a mechanism to become insensitive to T during the period of maternal care, because their natural T levels are never elevated during this part of the breeding season anyway. We tested these alternative hypotheses in female great tits (Parus major). Male great tits have previously been shown to be insensitive to T after egg laying with regard to nestling feeding behaviour (but not song rate). When females had started nest building, we experimentally elevated their T levels up to the nestling feeding phase, and measured incubation behaviour (only females incubate) and reproductive success. T did not significantly affect nest building or egg laying behaviour, although egg laying tended to be delayed in T females. Females with experimentally enhanced T maintained lower temperature during incubation but did not spend less time incubating. This might explain the reduced hatching success of their eggs, smaller brood size and lower number of fledglings we found in this study. As in this species T-dependent behaviour by females during the phase of parental care is not needed, the results support the hypothesis that in this species the need for selection in favour of T-insensitivity did not occur. Recent studies have demonstrated that carotenoid-based traits are under the control of testosterone (T) by up-regulation of carotenoid carriers (lipoproteins) and/or tissue-specific uptake of carotenoids. T can be converted to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) and estradiol (E2), and variation in conversion rate may partly explain some contradictory findings in the literature. Moreover, most studies on the effect of T on sexual signals have focused on the male sex only, while in many species females show the same signal, albeit to a lesser extent. We studied the effects of T, DHT, and E2 treatment in male and female diamond doves Geopelia cuneata in which both sexes have an enlarged red eye ring, which is more pronounced in males. We first showed that this periorbital ring contains very high concentration of carotenoids, of which most are lutein esters. Both T and DHT were effective in enhancing hue, UV-chroma and size in both sexes, while E2 was ineffective. However, E2 dramatically increased the concentration of circulating lipoproteins. We conclude that in both sexes both color and size of the secondary sexual trait are androgen dependent. The action of androgens is independent of lipoproteins regulation. Potential mechanisms and their consequences for trade-off are discussed.

The onset of mating in yellow-pine chipmunks (Tamias amoenus) follows emergence from a prolonged period of energy conservation during hibernation. Energy expenditures are greatly accelerated to meet the demands of the reproductive season. When emerging from hibernation, typical male chipmunks (breeders) have enlarged testes and a high level of plasma testosterone M. However, certain males that do not participate in reproduction (nonbreeders) maintain small testes and low plasma T levels and emerge several weeks later than the breeders. The timing of the terminal arousal from hibernation and onset of mating are associated with increased plasma T levels. Experimental elevation of T levels in T amoenus outside the mating season has been associated with a decrease in body mass, further suggesting an effect of T on energy balance. To test this hypothesis, we measured daily energy expenditure (DEE) in free-living, nonbreeding male chipmunks in the presence and absence of a T-implant. We also measured DEE in breeding males when endogenous T levels were high. DEE of the nonbreeders was not affected by our manipulation of plasma T, and the DEE of breeding males did not differ from that of nonbreeders. We conclude that energy expenditure on a daily basis in male yellow-pine chipmunks is not influenced by levels of T. However, on a seasonal basis, the earlier emergence from hibernation by breeding males, which appears to be influenced by T, represents an overall seasonal energy expenditure that exceeds that of nonbreeding males.
