Variations in the size and shape of the eye have been observed in many species of fish. As eye size is positively related to visual acuity, larger eyes should favour foraging and detection of predators.However, few studies have examined the variation in eye morphology in relation to the complexity of lake conditions, including environmental perturbation and spatial variation in predation and competition. Such tests are especially important as the degrading of the visual climate is expected due to climate change, where browning, turbidity and variations in structural complexity should set different demands for visual acuity of foraging fish under predation risk.In this study, we tested the variation of the eye size among 667 individuals of an aquatic predator perch, Perca fluviatilis, from littoral and pelagic habitats of 14 lakes. We used Secchi depth to assess the effects of the visual climate of our lake systems, as fish foraging is highly related to visual conditions, and studied eye size variation in relation to the contribution of the pelagic resources to an individual's diet and the risk of predation.Secchi depth, the pelagic contribution to the diet and the percentage of piscivores had significant effects on eye size.These variable outcomes suggest that the lake environment in terms of visual climate, predation landscape and diet are major factors of eye size variation in this generalist predator. As many fish species trade off foraging against predation risk, future studies will show whether the complexity of intra‐ and interspecific interactions contribute to the variation in eye size in freshwater fish. ABSTRACT Biological invasions pose a serious threat to native biodiversity, and climate change intensifies the risk of non‐native species invasion in human‐altered environments, particularly in freshwater ecosystems. In South Korean freshwaters, the number of non‐native fish species increased significantly since the early 1950s. We screened risk of invasion by 43 freshwater fish species in South Korea using the Aquatic Species Invasiveness Screening Kit (AS‐ISK). Of these species, 26 (~ 61%) posed a high to very high risk of invasiveness. Black bullhead Ameiurus melas, brown bullhead Ameiurus nebulosus, North African catfish Clarias gariepinus, green sunfish Lepomis cyanellus, black carp Mylopharyngodon piceus, round goby Neogobius melanostomus, and Chinese sleeper Perccottus glenii were very high risk under current and predicted climate conditions. Striped snakehead Channa striata, longear sunfish Lepomis megalotis, smallmouth bass Micropterus dolomieu, white perch Morone americana, Eurasian perch Perca fluviatilis, and rudd Scardinius erythrophthalmus were high risk only under predicted climate conditions. Present risks were generally consistent with previous qualitative assessment, with some discrepancies, likely due to unobserved or under‐reported invasive traits of some species or a better ability of the present semi‐quantitative approach to estimate potential risks. Our results will inform South Korean decision‐making to potentially enhance regional cooperation across East Asia against transboundary introductions of aquatic invasive species. The results of our preliminary studies indicated that the diets of predatory fishes can be bioindicators of faunistic changes in ecosystems and indirectly of changes taking place in aquatic environments in the Pomeranian Bay. We examined the diet composition of top predators Gadus morhua, Sander lucioperca, Perca fluviatilis, and the mesopredator Neogobius melanostomus. The diet composition of the perch, pikeperch, and round goby in the Pomeranian Bay was analyzed for the first time. Our findings indicated that perch, an euryphagous species, is the best potential bioindicator because it is present in the area studied most of the year and has a low to moderate feeding index (FI). Baltic cod, also an euryphagous species, could be a good bioindicator in the areas where it is abundant and occurs frequently, but not in the Pomeranian Bay, where it is caught mainly in the fall. Round goby, which is present in the area studied and had a low FI, is a stenophagous species that preys mainly on benthic species, while pikeperch had a very high FI and the least number of prey species in its diet. The contemporary diversity and distribution of species are shaped by their evolutionary and ecological history. This can be deciphered with the help of phylogenetic and demographic analysis methods, ideally combining and supplementing information from mitochondrial and nuclear genomes. In this study, we investigated the demographic history of Eurasian perch (Perca fluviatilis), a highly adaptable teleost with a distribution range across Eurasia. We combined whole‐genome resequencing data with available genomic resources to analyse the phylogeny, phylogeography, and demographic history of P. fluviatilis populations from Europe and Siberia. We identified five highly diverged evolutionary mtDNA lineages, three of which show a strong signal of admixture in the Baltic Sea region. The estimated mean divergence time between these lineages ranged from 0.24 to 1.42 million years. Based on nuclear genomes, two distinct demographic trajectories were observed in European and Siberian samples reflecting contrasting demographic histories ca. 30,000–100,000 years before the present. A comparison of mtDNA and nuclear DNA evolutionary trees and AMOVA revealed concordances, as well as incongruences, between the two types of data, most likely reflecting recent postglacial colonization and hybridization events. Overall, our findings demonstrate the power and usefulness of genome‐wide information for delineating historical processes that have shaped the genome of P. fluviatilis. We also highlight the added value of data‐mining existing transcriptomic resources to complement novel sequence data, helping to shed light on putative glacial refugia and postglacial recolonization routes. The ability of fish to sustain environmental perturbations during fragile early‐life stages can be of vital importance for populations and species facing rapid global environmental change. One of the potential challenges for aquatic organisms, including teleost fish, is rising concentration of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in freshwater environments, known as brownification, which causes a cascade of changes including a decreased visibility and pH. Conversely, humic substances are increasingly recognised for their potential antimicrobial and immunostimulant properties. The questions remain whether exposure to humic waters high in DOC during the development causes significant perturbation, and to what extent genetic and parental factors may maintain optimal development in such a possibly challenging environment.To address these questions, we generated pure and hybrid (inter‐population) crosses of Eurasian perch (Perca fluviatilis) originating from clear‐water and humic lakes. Fertilised eggs from each cross were exposed to natural humic and clear‐water lake water. Intra‐chorionic space diameter (embryo diameter) and hatching success were recorded.Perch embryos successfully developed even in a small volume of water (5 mL) and majority hatched (70%) by 13 day post‐fertilisation. Embryo diameter was influenced by the interaction between cross type and treatment where embryos with maternal clear‐water origin were smaller than embryos of humic water origin in both clear‐water and humic water treatments. The probability of hatching was not related to female size, but rather to embryo diameter at the eyed stage and the interaction between cross type and treatment, resulting in pure clear‐water crosses hatching earlier and at higher numbers.Our study shows that effects of humic water are not uniformally negative in perch and discloses population‐dependent responses to humic water exposure during development. Our experimental design also illustrates the utility of multi‐well plates for conducting complex high‐throughput experiments beyond traditional model species and opens new possibilities for testing perch genotype–environment associations in early‐life traits.Taken together, results of this study add to the growing evidence that humic substances may have complex effects on fish during early life, motivating further investigations on their role in shaping natural phenotypes and potential use in the applied sector. Traditional methods for collecting robust samples of recreational effort and catch data from offsite mail or telephone surveys are becoming increasingly difficult to obtain. Smartphone applications (apps) that allow recreational fishers to report their effort and catch are a potentially viable data collection tool, but may be biased. We evaluated demographics, effort, and catch of freshwater anglers in south‐west Western Australia by comparing independent data from concurrent phone‐recall and app‐diary surveys for a 12‐month period in 2017–2018. Survey modes differed, with higher proportions of app respondents angling in freshwater and being avid anglers. For both survey modes, unweighted mean effort (days fished) was higher in dams than rivers, but was higher from the phone‐recall survey for dams and rivers. The unweighted distribution of kept and released catches (number of fish per angler) of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) and redfin (Perca fluviatilis) were similar between survey modes, with higher retention of redfin and higher release of rainbow trout. Kept and released rates of freshwater cobbler (Tandanus bostocki) and brown trout (Salmo trutta) were less common in both survey modes. Lower response rates and higher survey participation by avid anglers (≥20 days per year) from the app‐diary survey may bias survey data. Predator responses to warming can occur via phenotypic plasticity, evolutionary adaptation or a combination of both, changing their top-down effects on prey communities. However, we lack evidence of how warming-induced evolutionary changes in predators may influence natural food webs. Here, we ask whether wild fish subject to warming across multiple generations differ in their impacts on prey communities compared with their nearby conspecifics experiencing a natural thermal regime. We carried out a common garden mesocosm experiment with larval perch (Perca fluviatilis), originating from a heated or reference coastal environment, feeding on zooplankton communities under a gradient of experimental temperatures. Overall, in the presence of fish of heated origin, zooplankton abundance was higher and did not change with experimental warming, whereas in the presence of fish of unheated origin, it declined with experimental temperature. Responses in zooplankton taxonomic and size composition suggest that larvae of heated origin consume more large-sized taxa as the temperature increases. Our findings show that differences between fish populations, potentially representing adaptation to their long-term thermal environments, can affect the abundance, biomass, size and species composition of their prey communities. In a commercial fishery, some fish are classified as low-value, but their classification varies in different countries. The aim of this study was to determine the abundance, contribution, and dominance of low-value fish species, such as Abramis brama < 1000 g, Alburnus alburnus, Blicca bjoerkna, Gymnocephalus cernua, Perca fluviatilis < 100 g, Rutilus rutilus < 200 g, and Scardinius erythrophthalmus < 200 g, in 145 Polish lakes of different areas, depths, and trophic statuses situated in the northern and central parts of Poland in 2021. Perca fluviatilis and R. rutilus were the most frequent low-value species (100% and 99%, respectively). The contribution of all low-value fish to the total biomass of caught fish was relatively high, ranging from 37% in the mesotrophic lake to 100% in the eutrophic lake (mean of 77 ± 14%). Lakes in which the contribution of low-value species exceeded 90% were relatively numerous (24 lakes, 17% of the studied lakes). Among a total of about 437.5 thousand low-value fish, 261 thousand specimens (60%) had a body weight of below 10 g. All low-value fish species, except for P. fluviatilis and S. erythrophthalmus, were related to the studied environmental variables. The relative biomass of these species increased with increasing lake productivity, while it decreased with the increasing maximum and mean depth of the studied lakes. The high contribution of low-value fish to the total biomass in many lakes indicates the need for the constant monitoring of the abundance and structure of fish communities and the use of appropriate actions (biomanipulation and stocking with piscivorous fish species) to improve the ecological condition of lakes. This study examines the compositional (taxonomic) and functional diversity changes in the fish fauna of a Mediterranean urban lake (Lake Kastoria) over a period of 12 decades (1900–2020, as of 2022). Moreover, the current status (2010 and 2022) of the fish fauna is assessed along with the lake's ecological quality. Intentional or accidental species introductions resulted in significant compositional changes in the lake's fish fauna. The functional richness among the assemblages from 1900 and 2020 was increased due to species introductions, resulting in a peak of functional dissimilarity in 1990, when most introductions took place. However, the functional dissimilarity measures revealed that there have been moderate changes in groups of the functional traits which may be indicative of high species competition. The lake's open waters are dominated by Rutilus rutilus and the introduced species Perca fluviatilis and Lepomis gibbosus. The estimated ecological quality was higher in 2022 than in 2010, categorizing the lake as having "Moderate" quality and providing an upgrade from its earlier 'Poor" condition. This positive shift is attributed in part to the burgeoning population of Perca fluviatilis, as evidenced by increased catch rates. The species' resurgence may be linked to enhancements in the lake's physicochemical parameters, potentially facilitated by more effective treatment of urban wastes. The study underscores the complex interplay between species introductions, functional diversity, and ecological quality in the urban Lake Kastoria, highlighting the need for continued monitoring and management efforts to sustainably preserve and enhance the biodiversity and ecological integrity of urban aquatic ecosystems. Background and Objective: The presence of toxic mercury in fish has caused global concern, as one of the main ways of humans are exposed to it is through fish consumption. Therefore, the main goal on this research was to determine the concentration of mercury in fish and evaluate the health risk to consumers. Materials and Methods: Samples of pike, common perch, European perch, common carp and goldfish were collected from Anzali wetland. Mercury concentration was measured using a graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometer. Differences in mercury concentration among the species and the comparison of mercury concentration with the standards were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance and one sample t-test, respectively. Results: The average concentrations of mercury for pike, common perch, European perch, common carp and goldfish were 59.59, 67.55, 30.45, 9.84, and 10.44 µg/kg ww, respectively. The results showed significant differences in mercury concentrations among different species. The concentrations of mercury in all samples were below the permissible limits of international standards (300 and 500 µg/kg dw), and the HQ index values were less than 1. Therefore, the results indicated no potential risk to consumer health. Additionally, the consumption of European perch, common carp and goldfish is considered safe for sensitive people (children and pregnant women). The frequency of skeletal deformations in fish is a common biomarker when investigating the environmental response to effluents of various origins. This study discovered a new biomarker: elevated mineralization levels of the vertebrae in the caudal region of perch Perca fluviatilis. The study was conducted in northern Sweden in lakes receiving discharges from an iron ore mine and adjacent reference lakes. The introduction and spread of alien fish species pose a major threat to native communities and ecosystem functioning in freshwaters. Black bullhead is one of the most successful invaders in European waters with several detrimental effects on native biota and ecosystems. In this study, we used stable isotope analysis to compare the body size and season-dependent diet, trophic position, isotopic niche size, and niche overlap of the invasive black bullhead with two native fish species (roach and European perch) in Lake Balaton, Hungary. We found that black bullhead could be characterized by invertivore-piscivorous feeding habit with a high rate of fish consumption. The rate of fish predation by invasive black bullhead increased with body size, while no seasonal differences were observed in fish consumption. Contrary to our hypothesis, little evidence of actual feeding competition was found between black bullhead and native fishes. Our results suggest that the studied species assimilate distinct energy resources in different proportions leading to a substantial amount of niche partitioning among them. We conclude that black bullhead may represent a threat for native, small-sized fishes primarily through predation and recommend urgent management actions (e.g. selective removal of the species) to minimize its adverse impacts on native communities. Day and nighttime autumn fish abundance and biomass were studied in the pelagic and littoral zones of Lake Sauka in Latvia. Both pelagic methods (hydroacoustics and trawling) revealed significantly higher fish abundance and biomass during the day than at night, especially in deeper zones (below 3 m). Roach (Rutilus rutilus) and Eurasian perch (Perca fluviatilis) dominated the trawl catches during the day, while roach and ruffe dominated at night. Fish smaller than 14 cm strongly dominated in both the trawl catches and hydroacoustic observations. Our hydroacoustic sampling found inhomogeneous pelagic distributions of fish aggregated in big shoals during the day. In the littoral zone, which was sampled by beach seining, both the abundance and biomass were significantly higher at night than during the day. Roach, bleak, and European perch usually dominated in beach seine catches during the day and at night. The daytime pelagic biomass found by hydroacoustics was 62 kg/ha and it decreased to approximately 11 kg/ha at night. The littoral biomass found by beach seining was diurnally opposite, 4 kg/ha during the day and 37 kg/ha at night. It is obvious that diurnal horizontal migrations between pelagic and littoral zones, and shoaling behavior during the daytime are common patterns in the shallow Lake Sauka during the autumn. The study of the spatial distribution of fish is extremely important for the establishment of an appropriate monitoring plan for the purposes of the Water Framework Directive with regard to the morphometry of the lake, the geographical location, and the sampling period of the year. This study also shows that the combination of completely non‐invasive hydroacoustic and other methods that are invasive (trawls, beach seines) but not as destructive as gillnets, which are normally used for scientific fish monitoring in Europe, could be a future way forward for fish monitoring. Widespread persistent contaminants are a global environmental problem. In the Baltic Sea, wildlife contamination was first noticed in the 1960s, prompting the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency to establish a comprehensive Swedish National Monitoring Programme for Contaminants in Marine Biota (MCoM) in 1978 run by the Swedish Museum of Natural History. Eight species have been analysed, four fish species (Atlantic herring, Atlantic cod, European perch, viviparous eelpout), one bivalve species (blue mussel), and egg from three bird species (common guillemot, common tern, Eurasian oystercatcher). Here, we present a dataset containing MCoM data from its start until 2021. It includes 36 sets of time-series, each analysed for more than 100 contaminants. The longest time-series is for common guillemot and starts in 1968. We describe the structure of MCoM including historic changes to the number of stations, sample treatment, analytical methods, instruments, and laboratories. It is well established that non‐native fish can become invasive and outcompete and displace native fish populations. However, little research has explored the potential benefits that non‐native fish may provide to native fish populations. To address this information gap, we examined how the availability of non‐native perch (Perca fluviatilis) as prey could benefit populations of the endemic longfin eel (Anguilla dieffenbachii) and the native shortfin eel (Anguilla australis) in two neighbouring open‐water wetlands in the Rakatu‐Redcliff wetland complex in the Southland region of Aotearoa New Zealand. The Redcliff wetland fish community comprised native fish only, while the Rakatu wetland comprised native fish and non‐native perch. We compared the size, condition, population density, population size structure and diet of eels in these wetlands. While eels were not necessarily larger or better conditioned in Rakatu wetland, their population density was three times higher than the Redcliff wetland, with young‐of‐the‐year perch comprising ca. 40% of their diet. Furthermore, juvenile eel density was four times lower in Redcliff wetland, suggesting that cannibalism may occur at this site to support the existing eel population. Based on our findings, we suggest that freshwater managers consider the predator–prey dynamics of both native and non‐native fish before removing non‐native species, to avoid unintended negative consequences for native predatory fish species. Citizen science involves non-professionals assisting with scientific research, contributing data, and conducting experiments under professional guidance. In this paper, we describe the citizen science project DNA & life, based at the Natural History Museumof Denmark, which actively engages high school students in both fieldwork and advanced laboratory analyses by collecting and analyzing eDNA samples frommarine environments across Denmark. The analysis is performed via species-specific real-time PCR and in a case study we present data gathered in the project from 2017-2023 with focus on the potential of eDNA detecting in use for species monitoring. The results include seasonal occurrence of Mnemiopsis leidyi and national distributions of selected species of particular ecological interest Perca fluviatilis, Anguilla anguilla, Neogobiusmelanostomus and Alexandriumostenfeldii. In addition to the eDNA case study, we present a new way of conducting citizen science and eDNA analysis, as a development of the established DNA & life project. Local DNA laboratories are created to shorten the path from sampling site to laboratory facility, creating the possibility for Danish high schools to participate in a new version of the project. In close collaboration with the academic staff of the DNA & life project both teachers and students help develop facilities, protocols and laboratory analyses in an extreme citizen science and co-creation approach, where the participants are involved in a higher level of laboratory work and data analysis. Allowing high school students to perform intricatemolecular lab analyzes through an extreme citizen science approach has demonstrated encouraging outcomes and potential for data of high quality in terms of sampling and analyzing eDNA with the purpose of species monitoring and conservation. One of the negative impacts of non-native invasive species on trophic interactions in an invaded ecosystem occurs via increased interspecific competition for food resources between the invader and local species of the same food niche. In freshwaters, there are usually several fish species that feed on similar food resources. Ponto-Caspian gobies are amongst the most successful and widespread invaders colonising European waterways. They have a wide food niche and an opportunistic feeding strategy, with a focus on benthic invertebrates and piscivory occurring occasionally mainly in the case of large individuals. Competition with native percids for food resources is predicted on the basis of high dietary overlap. However, studies published so far provide no unequivocal answer. In order to resolve this question, we conducted a comparative taxonomic analysis of gut content, with an emphasis on chironomids and amphipods, of the invasive monkey goby (Neogobius fluviatilis), racer goby (Babka gymnotrachelus) and the native Eurasian perch (Perca fluviatilis) occurring sympatrically in a large lowland European river, the Bug River in Poland. We found that each species forages in slightly different habitats, as indicated by the different composition of prey species in the gut content. This suggests feeding niche partitioning between the studied species facilitating their co-existence and reduction or avoidance of competition for food resources. Resource partitioning regarding prey types and foraging habitats is a mechanism for permitting the co-existence of closely-related alien gobies with similar food preferences in the invaded waters and co-occurrence with local species. This mechanism can contribute to their invasion success, as observed in European waters during the recent decades. We also demonstrate that precise prey identification to the lowest possible taxon is crucial to reveal the dietary overlap between co-occurring fish species and to predict the impact of alien invaders on native species through interspecific competition, as well as to recommend such an approach in studies upon fish foraging strategies. A helminthological survey of three fish species (Perca fluviatilis, Stizostedion lucioperca and Esox lucius) from the lower section of the Dniprovske Reservoir (also known as Zaporizhzhia) revealed the presence of the dioctophymatid nematode Eustrongylides excisus (third stage larvae). The study was conducted in 2020 and 2021. It was found that the total prevalence of infection was more than 40%. The nematode was found in the liver, abdomen and muscles. Significant tissue lesions were observed in some fish specimens. They were visually accompanied by mechanical damage, oedema and inflammation. The intensity of infection in P. fluviatilis and S. lucioperca was 14.18 ± 0.81 and 12.69 ± 0.73, respectively. In turn, the intensity of infection in E. lucius had the lowest value 2.40 ± 0.41. The abdomen and muscles of P. fluviatilis and S. lucioperca were affected more than the liver. No statistically significant differences were found between the intensity of infection of the abdomen and muscles in P. fluviatilis. Furthermore, the musculature of S. lucioperca was more heavily infected than the abdomen. In E. lucius, nematodes were found only in the abdominal cavity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study investigated the concentrations and profiles of 19 perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in the muscle and liver of four freshwater species from Lake Trasimeno (Italy): Anguilla anguilla (European eel), Carassius auratus (goldfish), Perca fluviatilis (European perch), and Procambarus clarkii (red swamp crayfish). In livers, the amount of PFASs ranged from 3.1 to 10 µg kg−1, significantly higher than that in muscle (0.032–1.7 µg kg−1). The predominant PFASs were perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) and long-chain carboxylic acids (C8–C14). Short-chain compounds (C4–C5), as well as the long-chain sulfonic acids (C9–C12), were not quantified. The contamination patterns were similar among species with few differences, suggesting the influence of species-specific accumulation. The PFAS concentrations in livers were comparable among species, while in muscle, the higher values were measured in European eel, followed by goldfish, European perch, and red swamp crayfish. The levels were generally lower than those reported for fish from Northern Italian lakes and rivers. The concentrations of regulated PFASs were lower than the maximum limits set by Regulation EU 2023/915 and did not exceed the Environmental Quality Standards (PFOS in biota). The size and shape variability of three bones of river perch from two adjacent reservoirs in the upper reaches of the Techa River (the Southern Urals, Russia), the Techa storage reservoir cascade of liquid radioactive technogenic wastes (contaminated for over 50 years), and Lake Irtyash (control) has been studied using geometric morphometrics methods. Perch bones in adjacent populations differ in shape; however, they are similar in growth rates. The range of sex variability of the bone shape is on average 5.4 times less than the intergroup differences of the perch population. With age, the frontal bone growth rates slow down, the praeoperculum growth rates do not change, and the cleithrum increases. Sexual dimorphism in bone sizes of older fish and a low level of sex differences in the shape of the frontal bone and praeoperculum in the Techa cascade population has been revealed. These data characterize a high degree of phenotypic plasticity of the perch and adaptive restructuring of its morphogenesis associated with the local environment of technogenic reservoirs. • We characterize the diplostomid parasite communities in two fish species. • We applied a quadrupled-indexing cox1 region-specific DNA metabarcoding method. • Diplostomid communities in temperate lakes show spatial and temporal heterogeneity. • We revealed novel associations between co-infecting diplostomid species. • This method proved to be effective to describe communities with cryptic species. Eye flukes (Diplostomidae) are diverse and abundant trematode parasites that form multi-species communities in fish with negative effects on host fitness and survival. However, the environmental factors and host-related characteristics that determine species diversity, composition, and coexistence in such communities remain poorly understood. Here, we developed a cost-effective cox1 region-specific DNA metabarcoding approach to characterize parasitic diplostomid communities in two common fish species (Eurasian perch and common roach) collected from seven temperate lakes in Estonia. We found considerable inter- and intra-lake, as well as inter-host species, variation in diplostomid communities. Sympatric host species characterization revealed that parasite communities were typically more diverse in roach than perch. Additionally, we detected five positive and two negative diplostomid species associations in roach, whereas only a single negative association was observed in perch. These results indicate that diplostomid communities in temperate lakes are complex and dynamic systems exhibiting both spatial and temporal heterogeneity. They are influenced by various environmental factors and by host-parasite and inter-parasite interactions. We expect that the described methodology facilitates ecological and biodiversity research of diplostomid parasites. It is also adaptable to other parasite groups where it could serve to improve current understanding of diversity, distribution, and interspecies interactions of other understudied taxa. The trophic niche of aquatic generalist predators is influenced by ontogeny, habitat characteristics, availability and type of prey, and competitive interactions. Many interrelated lake characteristics influence the availability of prey and may thereby impact foraging niches and the trajectory of ontogenetic niche shifts. Our work uses Eurasian perch (Perca fluviatilis) as a model species to examine the correlation of multiple lake and fish community characteristics with the size‐dependency of perch populations' realised trophic niche. We used carbon and nitrogen stable isotopes to correlate the changes in perch trophic position across a gradient of total lengths in seven gravel pit lakes that differed in lake morphology, habitat heterogeneity, productivity, structural complexity, and fish community composition. Perch populations in lakes with more shallow‐water habitat reached a higher trophic position at smaller sizes than perch in deeper lakes. However, the changes in trophic position with increasing size were less pronounced compared to perch from deeper lakes. Large individuals from the latter perch populations ultimately achieved higher mean trophic positions compared to fish from shallow lakes. Perch in lakes with more shallow‐water habitat may, therefore, achieve lower rates of piscivory because of higher relative availability of macroinvertebrates or greater competition with zooplanktivores. Our results suggest that large, piscivorous perch are more likely to develop in deeper lakes, and that these changes in perch trophic position across ontogeny are more strongly related to the depth of lakes than to the type of structured habitat in the littoral zone. Diet of the otter inhabiting a forest stream in SW Poland was studied in order to show the impact of the otter on fish and other aquatic animals. The diet was examined by means of spraint analysis. A total of 157 spraints were collected from 14 sites, and 605 prey items were extracted. Fish comprised the staple diet. It was supplemented by frogs, birds, small mammals and invertebrates. Fish were represented by at least 23 species belonging to seven families. Two families Cyrinidae and Percidae dominated the fish component of the diet (together 70.1%). The most numerous fish species consumed were Perca fluviatilis (24.1%) and Rutilus rutilus (12.1%). The otter diet was most diversified in the coldest months of the year (November-April; B = 10.0-10.5), and least in the warmest months of the year (July-August; B = 5.7). The niche breath was wider in 2006 (B = 12.2), compared with 2007 (B = 20.4). However, only the proportions of Gobio gobio and Esox lucius were statistically different in those two years compared. This study confirms previous findings that the otter is a generalist piscivorous predator hunting opportunistically on locally and seasonally most common fish species, mainly of low economic importance. Based on spore morphology and small subunit ribosomal DNA sequences, we describe a new Myxobolus species, Myxobolus tihanyensis n. sp., parasitizing the European perch (Perca fluviatilis) from Lake Balaton in Hungary. The brownish plasmodia were found in various locations of the body, mainly in the muscle adjacent with fins and vertebrae. The spores were ovoid, and measured 9.84 ± 0.38 μm in length, 7.69 ± 0.23 μm in width, and 5.35 ± 0.21 μm in thickness, with 8–10 sutural (edge) markings. The polar capsules were mostly equal in size, with 4.91 ± 0.39 μm in length and 2.27 ± 0.24 μm in width. The polar tubule length is 38.15 μm ± 2.70, and coiled 6–7 times. In particular, these morphological data overlap with those of Myxobolus sandrae Reuss1906 infecting the European perch (Perca fluviatilis), the pikeperch (Sander lucioperca), and the Volga pikeperch (Sander volgensis) according to previous descriptions and the taxonomic data here described. However, the phylogenetic analyses separate the two species as sister clades with 16.8% genetic distance. This study has demonstrated that the two species of Myxobolus exhibit phenotypic similarity while displaying significant genetic divergence. Therefore, the importance of including molecular data in the taxonomic description of myxozoans is emphasized.

In an experimental assessment of the stamina of fish the perch was shown to be almost twice as strong as the roach in terms of swimming power. In the early stages, interspecific differences are weakly expressed, but, with an increase in body size and weight, differentiation increases significantly. The rapid growth rate of burst swimming speed of the perch provides the ability to feed on more mobile objects. With age, the diet of fish is diverged to a large extent, roach feeding mainly on sedentary animals and plant food compared to perch almost completely switching to feeding on fish and benthic invertebrates. Long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) are critical for reproduction and thermal adaptation. Year-round variability in the expression of fads2 (fatty acid desaturase 2) in the liver of European perch (Perca fluviatilis) in a boreal lake was tested in relation to individual variation in size, sex, and maturity, together with stable isotopes values as well as fatty acids (FA) content in different tissues and prey items. ARA and DHA primary production was restricted to the summer months, however, perch required larger amounts of these PUFA during winter, as their ARA and DHA muscle content was higher compared to summer. The expression of fads2 in perch liver increased during winter and was higher in mature females. Mature females stored DHA in their gonads already in late summer and autumn, long before the upcoming spring spawning period in May. Lower δ13CDHA values in the gonads in September suggest that these females actively synthesized DHA as part of this reproductive investment. Lower δ13CARA values in the liver of all individuals during winter suggest that perch were synthesizing essential FA to help cope with over-wintering conditions. Perch seem able to modulate its biosynthesis of physiologically required PUFA in situations of stress (fasting or cold temperatures) or in situations of high energetic demand (gonadal development). Large reductions in fish biomass are common both as a method of managing lake ecosystems by fish removals (biomanipulation) and as naturally occurring fish kills. To further understand how fish reductions change feeding patterns of fish, we studied the diets of small‐ to medium‐sized roach (Rutilus rutilus) and European perch (Perca fluviatilis) on a monthly basis using gut‐content analysis during an 18‐month period before and after a whole‐lake fish removal in a eutrophic shallow lake. Further, we performed in‐depth analyses of zoobenthos communities of the profundal and littoral zones, as well as analysed the zooplankton community in the littoral and pelagic parts of the lake to estimate abundance and biomass of potential diet items. We found that, in general, there was a trend toward increased zoobenthivory in both species and among all‐sized fish after fish removal, regardless of prior diet preference. Reduced piscivory among larger perch (>150 mm) and reduced zooplanktivory among smaller perch and roach (<150 mm) were also observed. Moreover, during a short period of high zooplankton biomass after fish removal, both perch and roach (all sizes) shifted their diet toward daphnids, which likely caused a decrease in daphnid population. We suggest that such change toward periodical zooplanktivory across fish species and size groups may lead to unexpectedly high top‐down control by fish after lake restoration by fish removal. Northern pike (Esox lucius L.) is one of the fish species whose production in freshwater aquaculture may increase in the next few years. One method of producing this species is to create monosex stocks of pike, as females grow faster, mature later and gain larger body sizes. They can be obtained in the process of gynogenesis. The aim of this research was to determine and optimize the conditions of UV irradiating European perch (Perca fluviatilis L.) spermatozoa to inactivate them genetically (first experiment). The aim of this study was also to confirm whether perch spermatozoa can be used to induce northern pike gynogenesis using thermal shock (second experiment). During first experiment the highest rate of haploid larvae (29.9 ± 0.85%) was noted in the group inseminated with perch sperm irradiated for 6 min (1548 J m-2). No viable embryos were observed in groups of eggs inseminated with sperm irradiated for more than 10 minutes (2580 J m-2). The heat shock applied 12 or 14 min after gamete activation, for 3 or 5 min at 34.0°C, resulted in obtaining of gynogenetic specimen due to retention of the second polar body in all experimental groups. The most efficient was heat shock applied 14 min after gamete activation and lasting 3 min, and resulted in 18.5 ± 1.3% of gynogenetic larvae for female B. Heat shock applied 12 min after gamete activation, lasting 3 min was also effective in the case of female A, resulting in obtaining of 16.5 ± 2.1% gynogenetic specimen. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the scope of this study, fish fauna of Küçük Menderes River and its tributaries, updated with the comparison of the recent ichthyofaunal studies, as well as the length-weight relations (LWR) and condition factors (CF) were estimated for 7 freshwater fish species belonging to six families from the river basin: endemic Oxynoemacheilus eliasi, Cobitis fahireae; invasive, Carassius gibelio, Atherina boyeri, transloce Perca fluviatilis and the native Squalius fellowesii, Cyprinus carpio. The fish samples were collected with various fishnets and DC electro-fishing devices from six stations in 2018 and 2019. The LWR of the fishes was studied based on 379 specimens. The estimated values of parameter b ranged from 2.884 (A. boyeri) to 3.176 (C. fahireae). The coefficient of determination (R2) was changed between 0.792 to 0.980 for all sampling localities. In the study, Fulton's condition factor ranged between 0.391 (S. fellowesii) to 3.080 (S. fellowesii); the relative condition factor ranged between 0.346 (O. eliasi) to 2.746 (S. fellowesii), respectively. This research is anticipated to contribute valuable insights for the conservation of the species, while also furnishing essential data to inform future fisheries management studies in the region. Globally, fish are frequently introduced beyond their native range. Some, like Ponto-Caspian gobies, are becoming invasive, achieving high colonization rates and constituting frequent prey for native predators. However, little is known about the effectiveness of antipredator behaviors of the invaders, which may shape their role in the invaded community and contribute to the invasion success. We compared antipredator behaviors of invasive gobies and native fish species after their detection by the predator, when the danger becomes direct. We studied 2 fish pairs, each consisting of an invasive and native species co-occurring in the environment and belonging to the same prey guild: (1) the racer goby Babka gymnotrachelus versus European bullhead Cottus gobio , (2) the monkey goby Neogobius fluviatilis versus gudgeon Gobio gobio , facing a naïve predator (the Eurasian perch Perca fluviatilis). We analyzed behaviors of single prey individuals (escaping, staying in shelter, and activity) and single predators (activity, searching, following, capturing, and latency to prey consumption). In the predator presence, the bullhead was less active and more often managed to escape after capture than the racer goby. The gudgeon escaped before the capture more often than the monkey goby. The predator succeeded later with the bullhead compared to racer goby, whereas no differences in ingestion time occurred between the gudgeon and monkey goby. The results suggest that, in terms of hunting effort of native predators, the invasive gobies are equivalent to or more profitable prey than their native analogs, which can facilitate the integration of the gobies into local food webs. Biological invasions, particularly of fish species, significantly threaten aquatic ecosystems. Among these invaders, the introduction of the European perch (Perca fluviatilis) can have particularly detrimental effects on native communities, affecting both ecosystem functioning and human well-being. In this study, carbon and nitrogen stable isotope analysis was employed, using perch originating from five different ecosystems, to model the effects of their hypothetical introduction into İznik Lake, an economically and ecologically important, biodiversity-rich lake in northern Turkey, to ultimately assess their potential predation impact and competition with native predators. The results revealed that if perch were introduced to the community, they would – considering gape size limitations – primarily prey upon Vimba vimba and Rutilus rutilus, indicating a significant feeding pressure on these species. Furthermore, the study identified a potential overlap and competition for resources between commonly mesopredator perch and the European catfish Silurus glanis, the current top predator in the ecosystem. Both species would occupy top predatory positions, emphasizing the potential disruption of predator–prey dynamics. Our findings underscore the potential ecological repercussions of perch invasions. The selective predation on V. vimba and R. rutilus, with the latter being consumed to a lesser extent by perch, could lead to cascading effects throughout the food web, altering the community structure, and ecosystem dynamics. Additionally, the competition between perch and S. glanis raises concerns about effects on the stability and functioning of the fish community. These results highlight the need for proactive management strategies to mitigate the risk of perch introductions. Strict regulations on the movement and introduction of invasive species, along with comprehensive monitoring, are crucial for preserving native communities and maintaining the ecological integrity of freshwater ecosystems. Our study demonstrates the potential predation impact of perch on vulnerable fish species and the competition with the established apex predator, emphasizing the importance of considering the ecological consequences of perch invasions and informing management decisions to ensure the conservation and sustainability of aquatic ecosystems. The aim of this study was to perform a morphometric analysis of Prussian carp individuals collected from the Moara Domnească pond in Ilfov County, Romania. This was accompanied by a physico-chemical characterization of the water, which was sampled from the same location. Consequently, we analyzed a total of 60 Prussian carp individuals that were caught in April (N = 32) and May 2023 (N = 28). For the Carassius gibelio in the study site, we provided, for the first time, data on the weight–length relationships (WLRs), the Fulton K condition factor and the biometric features, including the total length (TL), standard length (SL), head length (HL), snout length (SNL), body depth (BD), girth and ratios for the TL/HL, as well for the TL/BD and TL/SL. A negative growth type was estimated for both the samples of C. gibelio. Based on other studies and fishing reports, besides C. gibelio, there are another 11 species that belong to the Cypriniformes order, and there are two teleost members of the Perciformes order (Lepomis gibbosus and Perca fluviatilis)—these were also associated with this habitat. Water samples were collected from 12 sampling points (SP), which were subjected to physico-chemical characterizations that consisted of an assessment of the turbidity (T), pH, electrical conductivity (EC), chloride (Cl−), total hardness (TH), oxygen regime parameters, phosphate phosphorus (P-PO43−), nitrate nitrogen (N-NO3−), nitrite nitrogen (N-NO2−) and ammonium nitrogen (N-NH4+) levels. In addition, considering their characteristics (high toxicity, non-biodegradability, long-range atmospheric transport and bioaccumulation potential), a number of organochlorine pollutants (OCPs) were identified. The total hardness values presented a very significant correlation with conductivity (r = 0.5974 ***) and with pH (r = 0.5854 ***). The results allowed for the water samples to be placed into the quality classes established by legislation, and they were also discussed in relation to the fishes' requirements. In this paper, the levels of nine heavy metals in the organs and tissues of six commercially important fish species from the Barguzin River (Eastern Cisbaikalia, Russia), bream Abramis brama, roach Rutilus rutilus, crucian carp Carassius carassius, common carp Cyprinus carpio, perch Perca fluviatilis and northern pike Esox lucius, were investigated. The distribution of HMs in the fish organs and tissues was unequal and was determined by both their physiological functions and routes of entry. The study also characterized the environmental habitats, including water and sediments, and conducted an assessment of potential risks to human health associated with fish consumption. The results showed that the levels of Fe, Zn, Cu, Ni, Cd, Pb, Cr and Hg in the muscle tissue of fish from the Barguzin River were generally low and did not exceed the maximum allowable concentrations established in Russia and worldwide. However, Mn levels in a number of samples exceeded the corresponding maximum allowable concentrations, which may be attributed to its elevated presence in the habitat. The calculated fish condition factor K showed good health status of fish from the Barguzin River. The highest Metal Pollution Index values were recorded for northern pike scales (5.9), which, however, corresponded to a low level of contamination. The other metal pollution index values for fish organs and tissues were all below five, indicating either no or very low contamination. Risk to human health was assessed using target hazard quotients and hazard index. None of these indices, both for each fish species studied and for each of the nine heavy metals, exceeded one. This indicated that consumption of the fish species studied did not pose an excessive risk of non-carcinogenic health effects to humans. The data on the content of nine heavy metals in the main commercially caught fish species from the Barguzin River indicated a low level of tissue and organ contamination by heavy metals and the absence of health risks to humans associated with their consumption as food. Simple Summary: In this study, the levels of infestation of two different species of pikeworm, Triaenophorus crassus and T. nodulosus, inhabiting a deep, oligotrophic mountain lake in Siberia were revealed. Based on results of five years of studies, a significant interannual variation in T. crassus infestation level was found, whereas the stability of T. nodulosus infestation in their host fishes was seen. Differences in feeding habits and physiology of fishesprobably had an effect on the mass of parasite abundance. Moreover, an asymmetry in parasite infestations between the number of T. crassus cysts in the left and right body surfaces of the "benthivorous" Coregonus lavaretus pidschian was also observed. In the present study, we estimated the levels of infestation of the main fish species that are hosts for two Triaenophorus species: T. crassus and T. nodulosus. The prevalence of T. crassus and T. nodulosus infestations in the intestine of their definitive host–pike Esox lucius was similar (71.0% and 77.4%, respectively). At the same time, the prevalence of T. crassus infestation in muscle tissue was significantly different between the second intermediate hosts, Coregonus lavaretus pidschian (31.4%) and Cor. l. pravdinellus (91.2%), due to considerable differences in their diets. For T. nodulosus, we found significant variations in the levels of prevalence among the second intermediate hosts—100% for Lota lota, 81.8% for Cottus sibiricus 31.9% for Thymallus arcticus, and 24.5% for Perca fluviatilis—that we also explained using different diets. Moreover, analysis of the symmetry of parasite infestations did not reveal any asymmetry between the number of cysts in the left and right body surfaces of the "planktivorous" form/species of whitefish, whereas in the "benthivorous", an asymmetry of parasite infestations was found. Simple Summary: This study concerns evaluation of the possible negative effects of power plants as one of the most important objects generating environmental pollution in aquatic ecosystems. We attempted to research the intraspecific genetic diversity of a naturally distributed fish species, Eurasian perch, based on a comparison of its mitochondrial DNA sequences. To distinguish naturally occurring mutagenesis from DNA changes caused by thermal or chemical pollution, the molecular data representing patterns of perch populations inhabiting hydro-systems profoundly affected by power plants and non-affected perch populations were collected and analysed. The obtained results indicate that most genetic differences among perch populations representing a large geographic area that encompasses territories from the Baltic Sea to Ukraine could be explained by historical and ongoing natural processes instead of pollution from power plants. The intraspecific genetic diversity of freshwater fish inhabiting hydro-systems of the macrogeographic area spreading from the Black to Baltic Seas requires comprehensive investigation from fundamental and practical perspectives. The current study focused on the involvement of the mtDNA ATP6 region in the adaptability and microevolution of Perca fluviatilis within phylogeographic and anthropogenic contexts. We sequenced a 627 bp fragment encompassing the ATP6 region and used it for genetic analysis of 193 perch caught in Latvia, Lithuania, Belarus, and Ukraine, representing natural and anthropogenically impacted populations. We evaluated patterns of intraspecific genetic diversity in the ATP6 region and phylogeographic trends within the studied area compared with previously established D-loop trends. Evaluation of ATP6 coding sequence variability revealed that among 13 newly detected haplotypes, only two were caused by non-synonymous substitutions of amino acids of the protein. PCoA revealed three genetic groups (I–III) based on the ATP6 region that encompassed four previously described genetic groups established based on the mtDNA D-loop. The two mtDNA regions (D-loop and ATP6) have microevolved at least partially independently. Prolonged anthropogenic impacts may generate new point mutations at the ATP6 locus, but this phenomenon could be mainly concealed by natural selection and reparation processes. Diet plasticity is often studied in Eurasian perch (Perca fluviatilis), a species commonly described as having generalist populations composed of specialised individuals. Perch diet was examined using gut content analysis (GCA) and stable isotope analysis (SIA), and individual specialisation was calculated in two study lakes within 2 years. Mostly only one diet category was present in the perch stomach, with more variation in the diet in the Most lake compared to the Milada lake between 2013 and 2014. The calculated degree of individual specialisation indicated higher specialisation in the Most lake. Interestingly, despite the different or almost uniform diet composition between the years, the total niche width (based on SIA) of the population remained similar in both lakes. This suggests that the overall variation in the sources utilised by the entire population remained consistent between the years. GCA mostly indicated zooplankton as the prevailing food source, whereas SIA indicated significant utilisation of YOY fish earlier that year, an information that was completely missed by the GCA of fish caught in September. The differences between GCA and SIA results could be attributed to the different time intervals reflected by the methods, but possibly to the conversion of the diet into the body tissues that is reflected by SIA and may depend on the diet's nutritional values rather than the proportion of different prey consumed. The diel distribution of early juvenile fish communities from two temperate freshwater reservoirs that differed in cover of submerged aquatic vegetation was investigated. In the daytime, about 99.9% of the juvenile fish community from the plant‐rich Žlutice Reservoir was found in the nearshore belt of submerged aquatic vegetation reaching an average abundance of ~7982 inds. 1000 m−3. In contrast, in the pelagic habitat, few fish were found at day. In the plant‐poor Římov Reservoir, 98.9% of juveniles occupied the pelagic habitat during daytime and reached an average abundance of ~333 inds. 1000 m−3. Vertical distribution of fish in the pelagic habitat in both water bodies was affected by steep thermal and oxygen stratification and no individuals occurred below 6 m depth. At night, 88.8% of the juvenile fish community from the plant‐rich Žlutice Reservoir was in the pelagic habitat with an average abundance of ~1423 inds. 1000 m−3. Their diel horizontal shifts were much more pronounced compared to the community from the Římov Reservoir that reached an average nighttime pelagic abundance of ~523 inds. 1000 m−3. Only 1.1% of the juvenile fish community in the Římov Reservoir was found in the littoral during the daytime and 0.7% at night reaching an average daytime abundance of ~1688 inds. 1000 m−3 and average nighttime time abundance of ~1664 inds. 1000 m−3. This study indicates that if a well‐developed littoral zone with abundant aquatic vegetation is present, early juvenile fish will perform diel horizontal movement in temperate stratified reservoirs. Space‐for‐time approaches are often used to indicate current or future changes over time. A European gillnet standard facilitates spatial‐scale comparisons of fish communities in European lakes. Fish size was generally lower and densities higher in warmer lakes, but less is known about trends over decadal time scales. We analysed the size of European perch (Perca fluviatilis L.) in 2121 Swedish lakes sampled during 1996–2021. The aim was to test whether size changed over time, and whether trends were similar in southern and northern regions. We analysed mean length and occurrence or relative abundance of size classes from the smallest (<100 mm) to the largest individuals (≥350 mm), and length at 1 and 5 years. The large data set was used to find general trends over time within regions, and within‐lake trends were tested for 40 time‐series lakes. The mean length of perch decreased in the southern and increased in the northern region. The proportion of the smallest perch increased in the southern, but not in the northern region. The most general trend was an increasing occurrence and proportion of the largest‐sized perch in both regions in the large dataset. The average trends in the southern region of the large dataset also appeared as predominant trends within time‐series lakes, although opposite trends occurred within some lakes in each region. This study also revealed that perch size at age 1 often increased within lakes over time, while more variable trends were found for size at age 5. The duration of the growth season has generally increased during the time frame of the present study, while other changes may differ between lakes in the same region. We recommend more studies based on time series of fish monitoring, including studies on possible reasons for the increased occurrence of very large perch in Swedish lakes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Eurasian perch Perca fluviatilis has been a popular model species for decades in the fields of aquatic ecology, community dynamics, behaviour, physiology and ecotoxicology. Yet, despite extensive research, the progress of integrating genomic perspective into existing ecological knowledge in perch has been relatively modest. Meanwhile, the emergence of high‐throughput sequencing technologies has completely changed the methods for genetic variation assessment and conducting biodiversity and evolutionary research. During the last 5 years, three genome assemblies of P. fluviatilis have been generated, allowing substantial advancement of our understanding of the interactions between ecological and evolutionary processes at the whole‐genome level. We review the past progress, current status and potential future impact of the genomic resources and tools for ecological research in Eurasian perch focusing on the utility of recent whole‐genome assemblies. Furthermore, we demonstrate the power of genome‐wide approaches and newly developed tools and outline recent cases where genomics have contributed to new ecological and evolutionary knowledge. We explore how the availability of reference assembly enables the efficient application of various statistical tools, and how genomic approaches can provide novel insights into resource polymorphism, host–parasite interactions and to genetic and phenotypic changes associated with climate change and harvesting‐induced evolution. In summary, we call for increased integration of genomic tools into ecological research for perch, as well as for other fish species, which is likely to yield novel insights into processes linking the adaptation and plasticity to ecosystem functioning and environmental change. We used yellow perch (Perca flavescens) captured at four sites differing in legacy industrial pollution in the Lake St. Clair–Detroit River system to evaluate the lingering sublethal effects of industrial pollution. We emphasized bioindicators of direct (toxicity) and indirect (chronic stress, impoverished food web) effects on somatic and organ‐specific growth (brain, gut, liver, heart ventricle, gonad). Our results show that higher sediment levels of industrial contaminants at the most downstream Detroit River site (Trenton Channel) are associated with increased perch liver detoxification activity and liver size, reduced brain size, and reduced scale cortisol content. Trenton Channel also displayed food web disruption, where adult perch occupied lower trophic positions than forage fish. Somatic growth and relative gut size were lower in perch sampled at the reference site in Lake St. Clair (Mitchell's Bay), possibly because of increased competition for resources. Models used to determine the factors contributing to site differences in organ growth suggest that the lingering effects of industrial pollution are best explained by trophic disruption. In the receiving areas of effluents from municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), aquatic organisms are threatened by adverse effects due to exposure to pharmaceutical residues. To elucidate the uptake of pharmaceuticals in fish, measurements were made in bile of brown trout (Salmo trutta) exposed in aquaria to 100% effluent water and in muscle, liver, kidney, and bile in northern pike (Esox lucius), European perch (Perca fluviatilis) and common rudd (Scardinius erythrophthalmus) from a lake receiving municipal wastewater. Pharmaceuticals were also measured in hepatopancreas of signal crayfish (Pacifastacus leniusculus). In addition to the measurements in fish and crayfish, pharmaceuticals were measured in the effluent, upstream and downstream of the WWTPs. In effluent water, pharmaceuticals were detected in the µg/L range, with the highest concentrations being of commonly prescribed NSAIDs and hypertension drugs, such as diclofenac, ibuprofen, naproxen, losartan, and metoprolol. However, the differences in concentrations between different sampling occasions were high, indicating a need for repeated sampling to obtain representative average concentrations. Pharmaceuticals in fish samples showed strong tendencies to species and tissue-specific partitioning. Levels of diclofenac in the brown trout bile were within the range of 4-16 µg/g w.w and naproxen within 37-170 ng/g w.w, while for all other pharmaceuticals, they were below detection limits. Several other pharmaceuticals were present in a similar order of magnitude in the effluent as diclofenac, suggesting diclofenac has a strong partitioning to trout bile. In the wild fish, the highest number of detected pharmaceuticals and the highest levels were observed in kidney of pike. Diclofenac in pike kidney was at most 37 ng/g w.w, followed by propranolol (20 ng/g w.w) and losartan (18 ng/g w.w). In crayfish, no pharmaceuticals were detected. The results suggest that the kidney of pike is a suitable tissue for evaluating pharmaceuticals in fish, while hepatopancreas of signal crayfish is not. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The anti-protease inhibitory ability of the cestode Triaenophorus nodulosus (Pallas, 1781) was studied in extracts of its plerocercoid larvae from the liver of a perch (Perca fluviatilis Linnaeus) and in excretory-secretory products and extracts of its mature and immature forms from the intestine of a pike (Esox lucius Linnaeus). It was found that excretory/secretory products (ESP) and extracts of both mature and immature T. nodulosus exhibited varying degrees of anti-protease inhibitory ability, including toward commercial trypsin. Tapeworm extracts had a greater inhibitory ability compared to ESP. At the same time, the extract of immature tapeworms exhibited a higher anti-protease activity compared to mature forms. Objective: Modeling of fecundity with allometric, nutritional, and environmental covariates has increased sensitivity of reproductive metrics in many fish species. In estuaries with heavy anthropogenic influence, resident species often experience sublethal health impacts because of increased stress, which can include increases in gonadal pathology, intersex, or potential reproductive failure. This study models the fecundity of the estuarine species White Perch Morone americana in response to health parameters identified as signals of habitat stress, including gross pathology presentation, nutritional condition, and disease presence. Methods: Subpopulation fecundity in the Choptank River (Maryland) of the Chesapeake Bay was estimated using stereological fecundity sampling methods and modeled using information‐theoretic approaches of model selection. Nutritional and health parameters identified through health assessment techniques, specific somatic indices, and disease presence were selected as covariates. Result: Nutrition demonstrated limited influence on model fit as compared to models with only conventional allometric variables such as weight and length. Of the health variables, gross pathology and somatic indices showed minimal influence on selection, but mycobacterial infection, a chronic condition in the Chesapeake Bay among temperate basses, showed measurable influence. Models with mycobacteriosis included were 40 times more likely the best fit when compared to models with only allometric parameters. Conclusion: Whether this has a region‐wide influence on all subpopulations will require further research and sampling of the magnitude of mycobacteriosis infection. Like the other organisms around us, fish are not immune to changes in health as a result of changes in their habitat. In the Chesapeake Bay, resident fish are subjected to habitat contamination, low oxygen, and high disease rates, all of which can reduce reproductive health and reproductive success. Simple Summary: The study aimed to assess the effect of squalene supplied in feed on the growth performance, health status, and fatty acid profiles of the muscle and liver of Siberian sturgeon, rainbow trout, and Eurasian perch. To achieve our aim, we fed fish with three feeds containing different levels of squalene (0%, 0,5%, 1%). Then, analyses such as hematological and biochemical assays, liver histology, and fatty acid content of muscle and liver were performed. The results that we obtained indicate changes in the values of hematological, and biochemical indicators between groups. Squalene addition influences the nucleocytoplasmic index values in all fish offered feed containing 1% squalene. The PUFA and docosahexaenoic acid increased with both groups where squalene was added. Exogenous squalene increases the content of PUFAs in the liver and muscles of the examined species. Squalene is an antioxidant that plays an essential role in fat metabolism. This study reveals the diet of pike-perch from two habitats within the Tersko-Caspian region. The feeding habits of pike-perch in the Sulak and Terek rivers and Tersko-Caspian region were investigated based on 354 specimens sampled monthly from a commercial catch in 2019. Their diet consisted of different prey, with fish representing the most important prey group (up to 90%). Rutilus caspicus dominated with a frequency of occurrence of 20.5, and Aspius aspius, Perca fluviatilis, and Chondrostoma oxyrhynchum, had 13, 9.5, and 8.3%. In the earlier ages 1+ and 2+, zooplankton dominated, followed by mysids and chironomids, which continues into the older ages but at decreasing rates. Analysis of monthly variations in stomach fullness indicated that feeding intensity fluctuated in time, with the highest values in March–April, and lowest in September and November. It was found that the diet of pike-perch in the western Caspian changed considerably from season to season. They begin to actively feed after wintering and before, or even during, spawning period. The spectrum of the diet of Sander lucioperca includes more than 20 elements, mainly juveniles of commercially valuable fish. This fish is characterized by a relatively low ontogenetic diet diversity and flexibility, which makes it sensitive to environmental changes, including anthropogenically induced ones. This fish partially compensates for this disadvantage with its lifestyle, namely, its active foraging movements and migrations from fresh water to salt water and back, following its prey species. Simple Summary: Niche widths and individual specialization were studied based on the isotopic signals, but using the innovative and non-lethal approach. We analyzed four different body tissues with different isotopic half-lives, and revealed crucial results on trophic interactions of fish. We assume that the observed trends will occur in other food webs with similar trophic positions. For example, the apex predator status of ectotherms is linked to the individual size, not to the species. In addition, thanks to the consideration of the site trophic state (total phosphorus content), which has been little studied in relation to niche width, we observed a significant impact on the individual specialization of species in higher trophic positions. Thus, eutrophication can significantly change the foraging behavior. Intra-species variability in isotopic niches, specifically isotopic total niche width (ITNW), isotopic individual niche width (IINW), and isotopic individual specialization (IIS), was studied using an innovative approach without sacrificing the vertebrates. Stable isotopes (δ13C, δ15N) in four body tissues differing in isotopic half-life were analyzed from four freshwater fish species representing different trophic positions. ITNW was widest for the apex predator (European catfish) and narrowest for the obligate predator (Northern pike). IINW exhibited a polynomial trend for the European catfish, Northern pike, and Eurasian perch (mesopredator), decreasing with body mass and increasing again after exceeding a certain species-dependent body mass threshold. Thus, for ectotherms, apex predator status is linked rather to its size than to the species. In herbivores (rudd), IINW increased with body mass. The IIS of predators negatively correlated with site trophic state. Therefore, eutrophication can significantly change the foraging behavior of certain species. We assume that the observed trends will occur in other species at similar trophic positions in either aquatic or terrestrial systems. Background: Freshwater fish communities typically thrive in heterogenous ecosystems that offer various abiotic conditions. However, human impact increasingly leads to loss of this natural heterogeneity and its associated rich fish communities. To reverse this trend, we need guidelines on how to effectively restore or recreate habitats for multiple fish species. Lake Markermeer in the Netherlands is a human-created 70,000-ha lake with a uniform 4 m-water depth, steep shorelines, high wind-induced turbidity, and a declining fish community. In 2016, a forward-looking restoration project newly created a 1000-ha five-island archipelago in this degrading lake, which offered new sheltered shallow waters and deep sand excavations to the fish community. Methods: In 2020, we assessed how omnivorous and piscivorous fish species used these new habitats by tracking 78 adult fish of five key species across local and lake-scales. We monitored spring arrival of adult fish and assessed local macro-invertebrate and young-of-the-year fish densities. Results: Adult omnivorous Cyprinidae and piscivorous Percidae arrived at the archipelago in early spring, corresponding with expected spawning movements. During the productive summer season, 12 species of young-of-the-year fish appeared along the sheltered shorelines, with particularly high densities of common roach (Rutilus rutilus) and European perch (Perca fluviatilis). This suggests the sheltered, shallow, vegetated waters formed new suitable spawning and recruitment habitat for the fish community. Despite highest food densities for adult fish in the shallowest habitats (< 2-m), adult fish preferred minimally 2-m deep water. After spawning most Cyprinidae left the archipelago and moved long distances through the lake system, while most Percidae remained resident. This may be related to (1) high densities of young-of-the-year fish as food for piscivores, (2) medium food densities for omnivores compared to elsewhere in the lake-system, or (3) the attractiveness of 30-m deep sand excavations that were newly created and frequently used by one-third of all tracked fish. Conclusions: New littoral zones and a deep sand excavation constructed in a uniform shallow lake that lacked these habitat types attracted omnivorous and piscivorous fish species within four years. Coragen 20 SC is an insecticide based on chlorantraniliprole that is applied on many crops. Considered an effective product with an incremental cost-benefit ratio, it has been widely used globally. Residual pesticides affect non-target organisms, so it is necessary to explore the possible effects induced by these xenobiotics on different species. This work aimed to assess some morphological, physiological and biochemical effects induced by Coragen 20 SC on two non-target species: Perca fluviatilis (Linné, 1758) and Triticum aestivum L. The concentrations used were the same for all tested species (0.0125, 0.025 and 0.05 mL L−1), and the experiments were of the acute, subchronic and chronic type. The toxicological effects of Coragen 20 SC on perch recorded behavioral changes, a decrease in respiratory rate and oxygen consumption, an increase in blood glucose levels and a decrease in the number of erythrocytes and leukocytes. The results obtained from the evaluation of Coragen 20 SC toxicity using the Triticum test indicate a weak to moderate phytotoxicity for the considered parameters at the applied doses. Only the assimilatory pigments were significantly modified at the concentration of 0.025 mL L−1 for the growth of the axial organs and the wet and dry weight, with the changes obtained not being statistically significant.
