X- and γ-ray spectroscopy ,Solid-state detector - Abstract
Following the commissioning of the PRISMA large-acceptance spectrometer, installed at the Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro (LNL), an international nuclear-structure collaboration has started to develop a large γ-ray setup to be installed in the target position of the spectrometer. The array is based on the EUROBALL composite CLOVER detectors. In this contribution the CLOVER detector array is described and its expected performance figures discussed. This new setup, by using the high-intensity heavyion beams provided by the LNL ALPI linac, will push the study of nuclear structure towards moderately neutron-rich nuclei by means of quasi-elastic and deep inelastic reactions.

The Rare ISotopes INvestigation at GSI project combines the former EUROBALL Ge-Cluster detectors, the MINIBALL Ge detectors, BaF2--HECTOR detectors, and the fragment separator at GSI for high-resolution in-beam gamma-ray spectroscopy measurements with radioactive beams. These secondary beams produced at relativistic energies are used for Coulomb excitation or secondary fragmentation experiments in order to explore the nuclear structure of the projectiles or projectile like nuclei by measuring de-excitation photons. The newly designed detector array is described and the performance characteristics are given. Moreover, particularities of the experimental technique are discussed.

The neutron-deficient nucleus 68As was populated at high spin in two experiments using the reaction 40Ca(32S, 3pn) at beam energies of 105 and 95 MeV. A self-supporting and a gold-backed, highly enriched 40Ca target were used. Gamma rays were detected with the EUROBALL array, combined with the charged-particle detector array EUCLIDES and the Neutron Wall. The 68As level scheme was considerably extended, especially at negative parity and many previous spin-parity assignments were confirmed or rejected. The total-Routhian-surface (TRS) calculations find shape coexistence and γ softness for the negative- and positive-parity states, respectively.

For a level scheme investigation of ^{142}Gd an experiment with the $\gamma$-spectrometer EUROBALLIII has been carried out and lifetimes have been measured with EUROBALL IV using the Doppler-shift attenuation method. The high-spin states have been populated in these experiments by means of the ^{99}Ru(^{48}Ti, 2p3n) reaction at a beam energy of 240MeV and the ^{114}Sn(^{32}S, 2p2n) reaction at 160MeV, respectively. Reduced E2 transition probabilities B(E2) were determined for 15 members of four quadrupole bands. For the interpretation of the positive-parity even-spin quadrupole bands, calculations in the cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky as well as interacting boson models have been performed. From the former calculations it was concluded that the high-spin states of the (+ , 0)_{1} band in ^{142}Gd represent a triaxial nucleus rotating around the longest principal axis.

Lifetimes of exited states in 134 Pr were measured be means of the recoil distance Doppler-shift and Doppler-shift attenuation techniques. The experiments were performed at IReS, Strasbourg using the EUROBALL IV spectrometer, in conjunction with the inner BGO ball and the Cologne coincidence plunger apparatus. Exited states in 134 Pr were populated in the fusion-evaporation reaction 119 Sn (19 F , 4 n )134 Pr . Reduced transition probabilities in 134 Pr are compared to the predictions of the two quasiparticle+triaxial rotor and interacting boson fermion-fermion models. The experimental results do not support the presence of static chirality in 134 Pr underlying the importance of shape fluctuations. Only within a dynamical context the presence of intrinsic chirality in 134 Pr can be supported.

High-spin states of $^{84}$Se, produced as a fission fragment in the fusion-fission reaction $^{18}O+^{208}$Pb, have been identified for the first time thanks to the EUROBALL IV array. The excitation energies of three of these states, interpreted as being due to the ($\nu g_9/2^-1 \nu d_5/2^+1 $) neutron-core excitation, give new insights about the evolution of the N=50 shell gap at the vicinity of $^{78}$Ni.

The study of $\gamma$-decays in $^{24}$Mg$^{*}$ is presented for excitation energies between the $\alpha$+$^{20}$Ne (9.3 MeV) and $^{12}$C+$^{12}$C (13.9 MeV) thresholds, where molecular resonances have been observed in $^{12}$C+$^{12}$C collisions. Various theoretical predictions exist for the occurence of superdeformed and hyperdeformed bands which can partially be identified with known resonance structures correlated in several reaction channels, and for which low spin members are predicted within the measured $^{24}$Mg$^{*}$ excitation energy region. The inverse kinematics reaction $^{24}$Mg$+^{12}$C has been investigated at E$_{lab}$($^{24}$Mg) = 130 MeV, an energy which enable the population of $^{24}$Mg states decaying into $^{12}$C+$^{12}$C resonant breakup states. Exclusive data were collected with the Binary Reaction Spetrometer (BRS) in coincidence with EUROBALL installed at the VIVITRON Tandem facility of the IReS at Strasbourg. Specific structures with large deformation were selectively populated in binary reactions and their $\gamma$-decays determined by using the BRS as a master trigger. Coincident events with inelastic as well as with binary $\alpha$-transfer channels have been selected by choosing the excitation energy or the entry point via the two-body Q-values. The analysis of the binary and quasi-binary reaction channels is presented with a particular emphasis on the $^{24}$Mg-$\gamma$ and $^{20}$Ne-$\gamma$ coincidences as well as the $^{12}$C-$^{12}$C coincidences.

Matière Nucléaire; The three superdeformed (SD) bands in $^{132}Ce$ and the two SD bands in $^{131}Ce$ have been extended to higher spin, following experiments with the Euroball IV spectrometer. The two SD bands in $^{131}Ce$ have been linked together. However, despite the relatively high population intensity of the bands (up to 5\% of the respective channel), it has not been possible to unambiguously link any of the five SD bands into the low-spin, normally deformed structures of $^{131,132}Ce$. At the highest spins ($>60hbar$), some of the bands exhibit the characteristic behavior of smooth band termination, i.e., energetically costly angular-momentum generation near the finite mesoscopic limit. Configuration-dependent cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky calculations have been performed to suggest single-particle configurations for the SD bands and to investigate the possibility of termination in these bands.

High-spin states in the nucleus 102Ru have been investigated via the 96Zr(13}C,alpha3n) reaction at beam energies of 51 and 58 MeV, using the EUROBALL IV gamma-ray spectrometer and the DIAMANT charged particle array. Several new high-spin bands have been established. The ground state band has been extended up to E_x \sim 12 MeV with Ipi = (26+), while the previously published negative-parity bands have been extended up to E_x \sim 11 and sim 9 MeV with I pi = (23-) and (20-), respectively. The deduced high-spin structure has been compared with Woods-Saxon TRS calculations and, on the basis of the measured Routhians, aligned angular momenta, and B(M1)/B(E2) ratios, nu h_11/2(g_{7/2},d_{5/2} configurations are suggested for the negative-parity structures.

We report the results of an experiment, realized with the EUROBALL IV spectrometer, in which superdeformed (SD) states have been populated in 197,198Pb nuclei. Crosstalk transitions between two signature partner SD bands in 197Pb have been observed with an established M1 character, giving access to the magnetic properties of the $\nu$ [752]5/2 intruder orbital. Six new SD bands have been identified in 197,198Pb. The results are interpreted in the framework of cranked Hartree-Fock calculations. A mixing between quasi-particle excitations and an octupole vibration is suggested in the two SD isotopes.

15 págs.; 9 figs.; 5 tabs. ; PACS number(s): 23.20.Lv, 21.10.Re, 27.50.1e, 21.60.2n, Excited levels in 69Se have been studied using the 40Ca(32S,2pn)69Se reaction at 95- and 105-MeV beam energy, γ rays have been detected with the EUROBALL spectrometer operated in conjunction with the neutron wall and the charged-particle detector array EUCLIDES. New level sequences with positive and negative parities have been identified from n-γγ and n-γγγ coincidences. Spins have been assigned to many of the levels on the basis of angular distribution and directional correlation measurements. Excitation energies of the positive-parity yrast band and the branching ratios of its decay are compared with the predictions of the rigid triaxial rotor plus particle model. ©2004 The American Physical Society, A. The gamma-rays following the reaction 105 MeV 18O + 28Si have been measured using the EUROBALL IV, HECTOR and EUCLIDES arrays in order to investigate the predicted Jacobi shape transition. The high-energy gamma-ray spectrum from the GDR decay indicates a presence of large deformations in hot 46Ti nucleus, in agreement with new theoretical calculations based on the Rotating Liquid Drop model., NS2002 Conference. The gamma-ray spectra from the decay of the GDR in the compound nucleus reaction 18O+28Si at bombarding energy of 105 MeV have been measured in an experiment using the EUROBALL IV and HECTOR arrays. The obtained experimental GDR strength function is highly fragmented, with a low energy (10 MeV) component, indicating a presence of a large deformation and Coriolis effects. In addition, the preferential feeding of the highly-deformed band in 42Ca by this GDR low energy component is observed., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures, Proceedings of the Zakopane2004 Symposium, to be published in Acta Phys. Matière Nucléaire; Linking transitions between the superdeformed (SD) and the normal deformed (ND) wells have been searched in $^{151}$Tb nucleus. Two experiments of 5 and 17 days have been performed with EUROBALL IV. Transitions of 2818 keV and 3748 keV with intensities of about 1 % relative to the yrast SD band have been observed. Their decay-out properties are discussed in the text. In addition the eight known SD bands have been extended towards higher rotational frequencies where orbital crossings are observed. For the first time, weakly populated collective ND structures, likely triaxial, similar to the ones recently identified in $^{152}$Dy, $^{153}$Ho and ${155}$Er nuclei have been observed in ${151}$Tb. The SD and ND structures are interpreted in the frame of Woods-Saxon theoretical calculations.

A method based on the conservation of linear momentum is used to correct the position and the width of the γ-ray lines of the residual nucleus produced in heavy-ion induced fusion–evaporation reactions. This method implies the measurement of the total number of the emitted particles, their masses, energies and directions of emission in coincidence with the prompt γ-rays. It has been applied to the 120 MeV 32 S + 58 Ni reaction whose data have been collected using the high efficiency and large granularity 4π light charged particle detector DIAMANT, coupled to the 4π γ-ray spectrometer EUROGAM II.

A first experiment was performed with the Binary Reaction trigger Spectrometer (BRS) for Euroball, as second last experiment of phase III. The reaction 24Mg(32S, 56Ni*) at E = 163.5 MeV was chosen in order to populate a specific hyperdeformed resonance state in the compound nucleus 56Ni* at E* = 84 MeV (Jπ = 46+) and to investigate the spectroscopy of its binary descendents. The experimental setup combined the γ-detector array Euroball III, without the phase I Ge detectors, the two large-area gas detector telescopes of the BRS at forward angles and 31 of the 40 detectors of the 4π silicon ball EUROSiB (now called ROSiB) at backward angles. We report on results of binary reaction triggers collected with one BRS telescope. Binary events are separated from evaporation residues due to (i) the large laboratory scattering angles of the detected reaction fragments, the opening angle of the BRS telescope being θ = 12 ° – 46 °, and (ii) by means of particle identification in the telescope. In this paper channels with emission of 8Be plus two protons and of 12C will be discussed.

High-spin states in 105 Rh were populated by the 96 Zr( 13 C, p3n) reaction at beam energies of 51 and 58 MeV, and studied using the EUROBALL IV γ -ray spectrometer and the DIAMANT charged particle array. A pair of nearly degenerate Δ I = 1 three-quasiparticle bands with the same spins and parity have been observed. Comparison of the experimental results with tilted axis cranking calculations confirms the chiral character of the two bands, while arguments based on the excitation of particles within the π g 9 / 2 ν ( h 11 / 2 ) 2 configuration of the yrast band and comparison with the previously observed γ band exclude the other possible interpretations. This is the first experimental evidence for three-quasiparticle chiral structure in the A ∼ 100 region, and the first simultaneous observation of a γ band and chiral partner bands in one nucleus.

International audience; 136 P. Joshi et al. / Physics Letters B 595 (2004) 135–142AbstractThe nucleus 106Rh was populated using the reaction 96Zr(13C, p2n) at a beam energy of 51 MeV. γ -ray transitions wereidentified using the EUROBALL-IV γ -ray spectrometer and the DIAMANT charged particle array. The yrast band, which isbased upon a πg−19/2 ⊗ νh11/2 configuration, has been extended to I π = (22−). A new I = 1 band has been identified whichresides ∼ 300 keV above the yrast band. Core–quasiparticle coupling model calculations show reasonably good agreement withthe data. The properties of the two pairs of strongly coupled bands are consistent with a chiral interpretation for these states. 2004 Elsevier B.V

Matière Nucléaire; International audience; The ultimate search for hyperdeformation (HD) at high spins with the EUROBALL spectrometer was performed for 126Ba as a hyper long (HLHD) experiment. The DIAMANT ancillary detector was used to tag \gamma -rays in coincidence with the emitted light charged particles. Using \gamma -energy correlation methods, the particle--xn-\gamma data have been analysed to search for hyperdeformed structures in the corresponding residual nuclei. Data in coincidence with one \alpha particle indicate the presence of normal deformed collective bands up to very high spins and the possible occurrence of HD-like ridge structures in 122Xe.
