The purpose of this study was to examine the evolution of social media commentary pertaining to LeBron James' activism efforts during two pivotal moments of state-enacted anti-Blackness violence. Utilizing the lens of critical race theory and critical whiteness studies, we examined user commentary pertaining to James' two Instagram posts responding to the state-enacted violence against Michael Brown in 2014 and George Floyd in 2020. While responses to LeBron's activism certainly evolved between 2014 and 2020, it is wise to be skeptical of that newly found support for James' message and the outrage toward a fundamentally racist society. Superficial rhetoric and virtue signaling are the norm, while progress toward substantive change remains stoic and still, often like the beliefs deeply etched within us. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

It is widely recognized that Emil Kraepelin explicitly advocated for eugenic ideas in his academic works. Given the renewed interest in related concepts such as self-domestication and neo-Lamarckism in different contexts, this article revisits his eugenic arguments by scrutinizing a section of his seminal work, the 8th edition of his textbook published in 1909. Our analysis reveals that Kraepelin's arguments consisted of multiple theories and ideas prevalent at the time (i.e. self-domestication hypothesis, neo-Lamarckism, degeneration theory, social Darwinism, racism and ethnic nationalism), each of which presented individual fundamental claims. Nevertheless, Kraepelin amalgamated them into one combined narrative, which crystallized into an anti-humanistic psychiatry in the next generation. This article explores the development of psychiatric interest in the Ainu people of Hokkaidō Island within the socio-political context of Japan's colonial expansion and the eugenics movement from the late nineteenth century to the end of the Second World War. Japanese researchers reinterpreted data on the Ainu – particularly as this related to racial categorization and blood-mixing – in reaction to the passing of the 1940 National Eugenics Law and the Japanese Empire's geographic expansion. Their studies negated colonial reality and attributed psychiatric degeneracy to a racialized Ainu constitution, building off and reinforcing preexisting anticipated futures for Ainu people. A recent report by G. Clark points to a sustained persistence of social status in England that extends vertically across several generations and horizontally across many levels of kinship. We seek to put his findings in historical perspective. We do so by relating them to two lines of thinking related to biological inheritance. One predated the rediscovery of Mendel’s work and led to the field of quantitative genetics, which dealt on the whole with quasi-continuously varying traits. The other is based on the rediscovery itself and led to a reconciliation between quantitative genetics and discrete Mendelian elements of heredity. Both were enmeshed with the supposed need for, and societal consequences of, eugenics and assortative mating. Also on both issues, the significant ideas can be traced to R. A. Fisher, inspired in one case by F. Galton and in the other by J. A. Cobb, with strong support for Galton and Cobb coming from Karl Pearson. Clark’s findings point to societal stratification, and assortative mating for wealth is a straightforward hypothesis to account for it. Much of the evolutionary literature on mate choice presumes that individual mate preferences function to increase individual fitness, and this assumption has been confirmed in several experimental studies with animals. However, human mate choice, in many cultures, is heavily controlled by parents via arranged marriages, rather than the selection of the marrying individuals. Several studies have demonstrated that parents and offspring do not exhibit identical preferences for an in-law or spouse, respectively. If parental choice thwarts offspring's evolved mate preferences from being expressed, then arranged marriages should reduce fitness. Using data from the Chitwan Valley Family Study, I examined whether having an arranged marriage, as compared to a non-arranged marriage, is associated with differences in total births, offspring survival to age 15, or interbirth intervals in Nepal, a culture with a rich history of arranged marriage. I find that there are no differences in any reproductive outcomes between arranged, co-selected, and self-selected marriages. These results indicate that individuals in arranged and non-arranged marriages may achieve similar fitness outcomes via different pathways, which may be unique to human mating systems. Robert A. Millikan (1868–1953) was the second American to win the Nobel Prize in physics. At the peak of his influence, no scientist save Einstein was more admired by the American public. Millikan, the head of the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) during its first 24 years, oversaw its rapid growth into one of the leading scientific institutions of the world. However, in response to demands for social justice following the murder of George Floyd, Caltech launched an investigation into Millikan. Caltech reached a decision to strip Millikan of honors (such as the library named after him), following accusations from various sources that he was a sexist, racist, xenophobic, antisemitic, pro-eugenic Nazi sympathizer. In short, Caltech threw the book at him. This article analyzes two accusations against Millikan. The first of these accusations was published in Nature: that he collaborated to deprive Japanese Americans of their rights during their forced relocation to internment camps during the Second World War. An examination of original historical sources will show that this accusation is false. On the contrary, Millikan actively campaigned during the war to promote the rights of Japanese Americans. This article traces the stages of misrepresentation that led to current false beliefs about Millikan. In view of Millikan's extraordinary position in American science, this misrepresentation is a cautionary tale. The article also treats Caltech's central accusation against Millikan: he lent his name to "a morally reprehensible eugenics movement" that had been scientifically discredited in his time. The article considers the statements purporting to show that eugenics movement had been denounced by the scientific community by 1938. In a reversal of Caltech's claims, all three of Caltech's scientific witnesses against eugenics—including two Nobel laureates—were actually pro-eugenic to varying degrees. Herbert Adolphus Miller (1875–1951) is a neglected figure within North American sociology, yet he made a distinctive contribution to the sociology and politics of race relations. He was one of the first sociological critics of eugenics and developed a distinctive approach to race relations and the position of subject minorities derived from a critical analysis of European empires. His approach was complementary to that of Du Bois with whom he had a close relationship. In this article, we trace Miller's critique of eugenics and the idea of 'Americanisation' as a policy of immigrant assimilation, showing the distinctiveness of his approach within North American sociology, including the milieu of Chicago sociology with which he was associated. We also examine the connection between his sociology of race and Park's position on race relations as being a process of gradual assimilation. We conclude with discussion of the Chicago school influence over Gunnar Myrdal's The American Dilemma and the alternative approach to race relations that both Du Bois and Miller had already outlined in the 1920s. This study focuses on how admissions at selective colleges and universities represent key racialized organizations. We analyzed data from 50 individual interviews of admissions professionals, through a theory of racialized organizations to recognize admissions as practices that consistently reproduces systemic inequities. We reveal how organizational structures centering an array of institutional priorities can maintain the systemic reproduction of intersectional racial inequalities, by privileging priorities like budgetary constraints, geographic diversity, and other interests, minimizing racial diversity as a priority. Our study bears key implications for future research and practice, by demonstrating that much like a Möbius strip, admissions organizations are difficult to fundamentally change for diversity and equity goals. Even with seemingly dramatic alterations to practices (e.g. test-optional policies) in isolation, Möbius strips generally maintain their structure. Institutional priorities, especially fiscal priorities, maintain the durability in racially unequal admissions outcomes through logics of racial capitalism. Unless institutional priorities fundamentally change, admissions processes will likely continue to reproduce inequalities. Research and systemic change efforts in college admissions should go beyond focusing on isolated elements (e.g. test requirements) and approaches to admissions (e.g. percent plans) to confront admissions and enrollment management systems, by interrogating underlying institutional logics and routines. The treatment of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) with adverse genetics remains unsatisfactory, with very low response rates to standard chemotherapy and shorter durations of remission commonly observed in these patients. The complex biology of AML with adverse genetics is continuously evolving. Herein, we discuss recent advances in the field focusing on the contribution of molecular drivers of leukemia biogenesis and evolution and on the alterations of the immune system that can be exploited with immune-based therapeutic strategies. We focus on the biological rationales for combining targeted therapy and immunotherapy, which are currently being investigated in ongoing trials, and could hopefully ameliorate the poor outcomes of patients affected by AML with adverse genetics. The negative effects of alcohol use can transmit intergenerational harm if alcohol use disorder (AUD) occurs during pregnancy and/or while parenting a child. Prenatal alcohol exposure is the leading preventable cause of congenital anomalies in the USA, and heavy drinking in women has been on the rise, further accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic. This study describes the most recent patterns in the past year AUD prevalence and treatment among reproductive-aged women, with a specific focus on pregnant and parenting women, and barriers to treatment among those affected. We analyzed data on reproductive-age women from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (2015–2021). We used generalized linear models to estimate prevalence ratios (PR) for past 12-month AUD and its treatment based on DSM-V criteria. We considered sociodemographic characteristics, including age, race/ethnicity, income, health insurance type, and arrest history. Pregnant and parenting women displayed lower risk for AUD (PR = 0.48, 95% CI:0.41–0.57; PR = 0.5 95% CI:0.48–0.54, respectively) relative to non-pregnant/non-parenting women. Excess risk for AUD was associated with education (some college vs. college graduates, PR = 1.07, 95% CI:1.01–1.13) and history of arrests (PR = 2.93, 95% CI:2.67–3.21). There were no clear differences in AUD treatment use based on parenting or pregnancy status. Among those with AUD, the prevalence of treatment was higher among individuals aged 35–49 years compared to those 18–25 years (PR = 1.6, 95% CI: 1.19–2.14) and in those enrolled in Medicaid vs. private insurance (PR = 2.62, 95%CI:1.97–3.47). Financial barriers and treatment not being a priority were the most frequently reported barriers to treatment. To promote well-being among parents and their children, healthcare providers should prioritize reproductive-age women at higher AUD risk. Decreasing the stigma attached to AUD and intensifying efforts to educate women about the dangers of AUD may improve treatment use among pregnant and parenting women. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Summary: Many people like to perceive themselves as better than previous generations: more knowledgeable, moral, tolerant and humane. Values associated with these aspects of ourselves may affect how we understand our professional forebears. In the early 20th century, some psychiatrists adopted new biomedical theories, including focal sepsis and eugenics, which resulted in inestimable harm. Detrimental clinical practices arose and were perpetuated in the context of societal values, medical ethics and other forces within and outside the medical profession. Historical understanding of the processes by which these things took place may help inform debate concerning current and future challenges of providing psychiatric care. Summary: Few studies have examined racial/ethnic differences in rates and correlates of insomnia among veterans. This study compared rates of insomnia and interest in sleep treatment among veterans of diverse racial/ethnic backgrounds. Consistent with the 3P model, we tested racial discrimination as a predictor of insomnia, with post‐traumatic stress disorder symptoms and romantic partners as perpetuating and protective moderators of this association, respectively. A total of 325 veterans (N = 236 veterans of colour; 12% Asian, 36% Black, 14% Hispanic/Latine) completed questionnaires online from remote locations. Descriptive statistics were used to compare patterns across racial/ethnic groups. Linear regression was used to test moderators of the association between racial discrimination and insomnia severity. Overall, 68% of participants screened positive for insomnia: 90% of Asian; 79% of Hispanic/Latine; 65% of Black; and 58% of White participants. Of those, 74% reported interest in sleep treatment, and 76% of those with partners reported interest in including their partner in treatment. Racial discrimination and post‐traumatic stress disorder were correlated with more severe insomnia, while romantic partners were correlated with less severe insomnia. Only post‐traumatic stress disorder moderated the association between racial discrimination and insomnia severity. Rates of insomnia were highest among Asian and Hispanic/Latine participants, yet these groups were among the least likely to express interest in sleep treatment. Racial discrimination may exacerbate insomnia symptoms among veterans, but only among those who do not already have disturbed sleep in the context of post‐traumatic stress disorder. Romantic partners may serve as a protective factor in insomnia, but do not seem to mitigate the impact of racial discrimination. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: The aim of this study was to explore the ergogenic effect of advanced footwear technology (AFT) upon world-class male marathon running speed. Method: A retrospective analysis of 99 world-class male marathon runners' performances between 2012 and 2021 was undertaken, providing a sample size of 971 performances, split into two footwear groups: AFT (n = 299) and traditional (n = 672). Additionally, details regarding the year of the marathon performance and racecourse were extracted. A mixed model for repeated measures (MMRM) analysis were undertaken identifying athlete (Wald Z = 2.821; p =.005) and course (Wald Z = 4.111; p < 0.001) as significant contributors to the variance in marathon running speed and as such were included as random factors with footwear type set as a fixed factor. Results: World-class male marathon running speeds were significantly faster (p < 0.001) when running in AFT (5.441 m.s−1) when compared with traditional shoes (5.386 m.s−1) with a mean difference of 0.055 m.s−1 (95% CI 0.039–0.071 m.s−1), translating to an improvement in marathon speed of 1.0% or a 79 s improvement in marathon race time. Conclusion: Our findings demonstrate an improvement in world-class male marathon running speed of 1% when running in AFT, a near identical degree of improvement to the male marathon world record ran in AFT. Whilst a 1% improvement in marathon running times associated with AFT is smaller than previously predicted utilizing laboratory-based models, this still reflects a significant degree of improvement at the elite level. Much of evolutionary theory is predicated on assumptions about the relative importance of simple additive versus complex epistatic genetic architectures. Previous work suggests traits strongly associated with fitness will lack additive genetic variation, whereas traits less strongly associated with fitness are expected to exhibit more additive genetic variation. We use a quantitative genetics method, line cross analysis, to infer genetic architectures that contribute to trait divergence. By parsing over 1,600 datasets by trait type, clade, and cross divergence, we estimated the relative importance of epistasis across the tree of life. In our comparison between life-history traits and morphological traits, we found greater epistatic contributions to life-history traits. Our comparison between plants and animals showed that animals have more epistatic contribution to trait divergence than plants. In our comparison of within-species versus between-species crosses, we found that only animals exhibit a greater epistatic contribution to trait divergence as divergence increases. While many scientists have argued that epistasis is ultimately of little importance, our results show that epistasis underlies much of trait divergence and must be accounted for in theory and practical applications like domestication, conservation breeding design, and understanding complex diseases. Although the canonical interpretation by scholars of the life and thought of Malcolm X suggest that he would experience a major shift in his views on race, this author contends that Malcolm's post-Hajj declarations about the white race were his beliefs about white people all along. It is not denied that Malcolm himself assisted in the construction of his Hajj experience being understood as an epiphany moment in regard to his views on race. However, a postcolonial studies reading that aims to uncover the agency of subaltern subjects provides a lens for a critical look at his words and actions throughout his life and provides a different explanation. Engaging with Judith Weisenfeld's religio-racial theory, it is argued that Malcolm conceded to the Nation of Islam's beliefs about race through suppressing his personal beliefs because of his acceptance of the overall mission of the group. Securitization theory posits that security threats are socially constructed. Yet, how audiences influence the failure and success of securitization attempts is still not well understood. In this article, I argue that audiences bring their normative perspectives to bear upon the interpretation of securitization attempts. This theoretical addendum, I hold, permits a fuller appreciation of how audiences express their agency when receiving securitization attempts. I examine the Singaporean context, where the discursive backdrop favours the construction of security threats. While the Singaporean government has successfully securitized many issues, Lee Kuan Yew's attempt to securitize the country's declining birth rates failed dramatically. This occurred, I contend, as the Singaporean public was deeply offended by the normative premises of Lee's eugenicist argument, thus refusing to engage with the issue on the government's terms. These objections were only fuelled by the eugenics programme the government later introduced, ultimately causing the government to discontinue its pronatalist policies and significantly revise its rhetoric. This article develops the understanding of how securitization unfolds by expanding on the conceptualization of audience behaviour. By examining Singapore, which has failed to inspire many analyses of securitization, it also diversifies securitization theory's empirical reach, highlighting its intelligibility within non-democratic contexts. Introduction The early geneticist and psychiatrist Ernst Rüdin (1874–1952) became one of the key figures in the eugenics movement and in the German health system of the Nazi era. His connections in the international eugenics network have played an important role in the history of eugenics. Objective To discuss the connections between Ernst Rüdin's scientific group in Munich and Otmar von Verschuer's group in Frankfurt during the Nazi era. Methods Otorhinolaryngological materials from Ernst Rüdin's former private library are presented, and they show Rüdin's deep involvement in the international eugenics network. These materials provide insights into early medical genetics in otorhinolaryngology. Results One result of the present study is that eugenics groups from Munich, Frankfurt, and New York certainly influenced one another in the field of otorhinolaryngology. Karlheinz Idelberger and Josef Mengele were two scientists who performed hereditary research on orofacial clefts. Later, Mengele became deeply involved in Nazi medical crimes. His former work on orofacial clefts clearly had, to some extent, an influence on subsequent studies. Conclusion An international eugenics network already existed before 1933. However, it becomes clear that the weaknesses of many early genetic studies did not enable its authors to draw firm scientific conclusions, suggesting that scientists lacked an accurate concept of the genetic causes of most illnesses. • Partisanship and race/ethnicity influence parents'/guardians'vaccine hesitancy. • Children living in Republican states are less likely to receive a COVID-19 vaccine. • Children of White parents/guardians are less likely to receive a COVID-19 vaccine. We undertook an observational study to assess the impact of state-level partisanship and parents'/guardians' race/ethnicity on their degree of COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy. We observed a pooled cross-section of 59,280 U.S. adults residing with children in the same household between June 29 and November 14, 2022. Using household-weighted logistic regression models, we evaluated the association between partisanship, race/ethnicity, and vaccine hesitancy, while controlling for other social determinants of COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy. We found that children were less likely to receive a COVID-19 vaccine if they resided in Republican as compared to Democratic states, with the difference in probability greatest among those households where parents/guardians identified as White. We also found that children were less likely to receive a COVID-19 vaccine if their parents/guardians identified as White as compared to any other race/ethnicity, with the differences in probability greatest among households in Republican states. Motivation Imaging genetics integrates imaging and genetic techniques to examine how genetic variations influence the function and structure of organs like the brain or heart, providing insights into their impact on behavior and disease phenotypes. The use of organ-wide imaging endophenotypes has increasingly been used to identify potential genes associated with complex disorders. However, analyzing organ-wide imaging data alongside genetic data presents two significant challenges: high dimensionality and complex relationships. To address these challenges, we propose a novel, nonlinear inference framework designed to partially mitigate these issues. Results We propose a functional partial least squares through distance covariance (FPLS-DC) framework for efficient genome wide analyses of imaging phenotypes. It consists of two components. The first component utilizes the FPLS-derived base functions to reduce image dimensionality while screening genetic markers. The second component maximizes the distance correlation between genetic markers and projected imaging data, which is a linear combination of the FPLS-basis functions, using simulated annealing algorithm. In addition, we proposed an iterative FPLS-DC method based on FPLS-DC framework, which effectively overcomes the influence of inter-gene correlation on inference analysis. We efficiently approximate the null distribution of test statistics using a gamma approximation. Compared to existing methods, FPLS-DC offers computational and statistical efficiency for handling large-scale imaging genetics. In real-world applications, our method successfully detected genetic variants associated with the hippocampus, demonstrating its value as a statistical toolbox for imaging genetic studies. Availability and implementation The FPLS-DC method we propose opens up new research avenues and offers valuable insights for analyzing functional and high-dimensional data. In addition, it serves as a useful tool for scientific analysis in practical applications within the field of imaging genetics research. Elizabeth Robins and Florence Bell's Alan's Wife (1893) shocked its first audiences with the brutality of the piece, but the play holds greater historical interest for its fusion of nineteenth-century theatrical approaches. The Naturalism associated with the independent theater movement is apparent in the debates about eugenics, capital punishment, and women's roles embedded in the piece, but Robins and Bell also borrow from commercial melodrama the device of the silent heroic character. In the final scene, Jean Creyke does not speak until her closing monologue, responding instead solely through eloquent gesture. The choice of gestural rather than spoken language draws on the moral certainty of melodrama to impart a political argument, anticipating the performance-based methods of the campaign for women's suffrage. AbstractBackgroundMethodsResultsConclusionsAutism self-advocates’ views regarding genetic tests for autism are important, but critical questions about their perspectives arise.We interviewed 11 autism self-advocates, recruited through autism self-advocacy websites, for 1 h each.Interviewees viewed genetic testing and its potential pros and cons through the lens of their own indiviudal perceived challenges, needs and struggles, especially concerning stigma and discrimination, lack of accommodations and misunderstandings from society about autism, their particular needs for services, and being blamed by others and by themselves for autistic traits. Their views of genetic testing tended not to be binary, but rather depended on how the genetic test results would be used. Interviewees perceived pros of genetic testing both in general and with regard to themselves (e.g., by providing “scientific proof” of autism as a diagnosis and possibly increasing availability of services). But they also perceived disadvantages and limitations of testing (e.g., possible eugenic applications). Participants distinguished between what they felt would be best for themselves and for the autistic community as a whole. When asked if they would undergo testing for themselves, if offered, interviewees added several considerations (e.g., undergoing testing because they support science in general). Interviewees were divided whether a genetic diagnosis would or should reduce self-blame, and several were wary of testing unless treatment, prevention or societal attitudes changed. Weighing these competing pros and cons could be difficult.This study, the first to use in-depth qualitative interviews to assess views of autism self-advocates regarding genetic testing, highlights key complexities. Respondents felt that such testing is neither wholly good or bad in itself, but rather may be acceptable depending on how it is used, and should be employed in beneficial, not harmful ways. Culture is one of the great themes of Bloch and Dawkins' philosophy. They use ideas of materialism and processtual evolutionism with reduction approach to explain the cultural realm. These common aspects make a comparative/synthetic study of their philosophy of culture-based on components "Ideas" and "Memes"- possible. The claims of this article are: 1) Bloch's processtual ontology is a proper metaphysics for Dawkins' genetics and theory of culture; 2) Dawkins' genetics explains the relation between the human biological sphere and social/historical structures. This article tries to show that the analysis of the cultural theories in Bloch and Dawkins' thought can provide genuine and profound insight into the fundamental dynamics of society and history and can more clearly explain some philosophical conceptions, for example "alienation" and "social class". On the other side, two pair's conceptions-mainly "praxis/expanded phenotype" and "mems/plus ultra"- are complementary and can more exactly explain the relation between gene, social structures, and culture. The result of this comparative/synthetic analysis of culture are: 1) A type of philosophical "determinism" that is challenging for some basic Bloch's conceptions: utopia and hope; 2) An example -by adding the Bloch's conception of "teleology" to Dawkins' genetics- of compromising the scientific and philosophical exceptional approach. The phrase "severely normal" was often used by Premier Ralph Klein in 1990s' Alberta to describe the Albertans he wished to interpellate, and it has had enduring power as a dog whistle by the political right in the province. Against commentators who see it as only a facile populist gesture, in this article the author deploys Foucault's lectures on "racism against the abnormal," together with Ladelle McWhorter's interpretation, to argue that there is a historical and conceptual continuity to "severely normal" that ties back to Alberta's infamous eugenic history. Articulating this genealogy enables the connection of political struggles on the part of sexual minorities, disabled people, members of non-normative families, and Indigenous people and illuminates the biopolitical rhetoric of successive Conservative governments. Drawing on archival materials from the Kinsey Institute, including letters of correspondence between medical professionals and transgender people during the 1950s–1970s, this article demonstrates how scientific and medical communities selectively employed old and new eugenics in their work with trans patients seeking hormonal and/or surgical interventions. Old eugenics helped providers control trans people's reproduction and family formations. New eugenics helped providers maintain social control over trans people's lives and solidify an 'ideal' patient who demonstrated their 'value' by upholding social fitness standards. This work contributes to histories of trans medicine by analysing this era through the lens of eugenics and expanding understandings of how medical and scientific communities sought to assert reproductive and social control over trans people. The case of the Juke family is one of the most notable episodes of the history of eugenics in the USA. The Jukes were initially brought to the fore in the 1870s by a famous investigation that aimed at estimating the interplay of heredity and environment in determining the problems of poverty and crime. This inquiry triggered a harsh confrontation between two polar interpretations of the study, an "environmentalist" one and a "hereditarian" one. It was with the later reassessment of the case made by the Eugenics American Office (ERO) in the 1910s that the controversy was considered closed with the victory of the eugenicists' hereditarian stance. As a result, the family was made a living proof of the alleged hereditary nature of crime and pauperism and a case study in support of the eugenicists' plea for the sterilization of people deemed the bearers of hereditary defectiveness. In this article, I explore the role played by pedigrees and other diagrammatic representations in the eugenicists' appropriation of the meaning of the case of the Juke family and the role played by this appropriation in asserting the superiority of the ERO's method of work over rival approaches. Objectives: The COVID-19 pandemic has caused unforeseen impacts on sexual and reproductive healthcare (SRH) services worldwide, and the nature and prevalence of these changes have not been extensively synthesized. We sought to synthesise reported outcomes on the impact of COVID-19 on SRH access and delivery in comparable countries with universal healthcare systems. Methods: Following PRISMA guidelines, we searched MEDLINE, Embase, PsycInfo, and CINAHL from January 1st, 2020 to June 6th, 2023. Original research was eligible for inclusion if the study reported on COVID-19 and SRH access and/or delivery. Twenty-eight OECD countries with comparable economies and universal healthcare systems were included. We extracted study characteristics, participant characteristics, study design, and outcome variables. The methodological quality of each article was assessed using the Quality Assessment with Diverse Studies (QuADS) tool. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses (PRISMA) guidelines were followed for reporting the results. This study was registered on PROSPERO (#CRD42021245596). Synthesis: Eighty-two studies met inclusion criteria. Findings were qualitatively synthesised into the domains of: antepartum care, intrapartum care, postpartum care, assisted reproductive technologies, abortion access, gynaecological care, sexual health services, and HIV care. Research was concentrated in relatively few countries. Access and delivery were negatively impacted by a variety of factors, including service disruptions, unclear communication regarding policy decisions, decreased timeliness of care, and fear of COVID-19 exposure. Across outpatient services, providers favoured models of care that avoided in-person appointments. Hospitals prioritized models of care that reduced time and number of people in hospital and aerosol-generating environments. Conclusions: Overall, studies demonstrated reduced access and delivery across most domains of SRH services during COVID-19. Variations in service restrictions and accommodations were heterogeneous within countries and between institutions. Advances in molecular tumor diagnostics have transformed cancer care. However, it remains unclear whether precision oncology has the same impact and transformative nature across all malignancies. We conducted a retrospective analysis of patients with human papillomavirus (HPV)-related gynecologic malignancies who underwent comprehensive molecular profiling and subsequent discussion at the interdisciplinary Molecular Tumor Board (MTB) of the University Hospital, LMU Munich, between 11/2017 and 06/2022. We identified a total cohort of 31 patients diagnosed with cervical (CC), vaginal or vulvar cancer. Twenty-two patients (fraction: 0.71) harbored at least one mutation. Fifteen patients (0.48) had an actionable mutation and fourteen (0.45) received a recommendation for a targeted treatment within the MTB. One CC patient received a biomarker-guided treatment recommended by the MTB and achieved stable disease on the mTOR inhibitor temsirolimus for eight months. Factors leading to non-adherence to MTB recommendations in other patient cases included informed patient refusal, rapid deterioration, stable disease, or use of alternative targeted but biomarker-agnostic treatments such as antibody–drug conjugates or checkpoint inhibitors. Despite a remarkable rate of actionable mutations in HPV-related gynecologic malignancies at our institution, immediate implementation of biomarker-guided targeted treatment recommendations remained low, and access to targeted treatment options after MTB discussion remained a major challenge. Privileged (in various forms, but especially class) people use egg or sperm donation and take other reproductive measures to achieve parenthood at all costs. Infertility issues for heterosexual partners and those who use donor eggs and sperm outside of heteronormative relationships has evolved into a type of entitled desperation and racial/ethnic/able-bodied form of eugenics, both further complicated by the cultural milieu of the post- Dobbs decision era. To illustrate how these rhetorics of infertility operate within broader neoliberal and racialized discourses, we critically consider three themes: first, we contend that fertility issues should become theorized through reproductive justice theory, particularly as class/race/nation divides donors from recipients, through forms of capitalistic endeavor as a rational enterprise; second, we review how "infertility" has become rhetorically important in the U.S. cultural milieu in critical communication and cultural studies; and finally, we argue that donor rhetorics represent a form of neoliberalism situated within racial/ethnic able-bodied eugenics and an inability to conceive, which results in emotional, physical, and financial cost to the self and society. This paper explores the links among internationalism, nationalism and racial discourses in post-Habsburg Central Europe. Focusing on Czech advocates of racial anthropology and eugenics, the paper documents that scientists embracing racial discourses did not evade scientific internationalism, either as an ideology or as a practice. Instead, in attempting to renew and expand their networks after the collapse of the empire, they were among its pioneers in interwar Czechoslovakia. This keen yet ambiguous embrace of internationalism that linked them to their counterparts in the Allied powers in the 1920s was reconfigured in the following decade. The 1930s were characterized by a search for alternative transnational models driven by political and epistemic challenges associated with the process of state-building and changing theories of heredity. This search resulted in interactions involving even Europe's colonies and dictatorships and became a significant, though not the only, factor contributing to the radicalization of these scientific communities. Analysing these exchanges as a manifestation of the 'dark side of transnationalism', the paper argues for the utility of this concept for the history of post-Habsburg Central Europe. Can a lifeworld survive without erotics? This question haunted decadent late-Victorian culture. Marriage appeared to be on the verge of collapse after the 1851 English census revealed that 30 percent of women would never marry. Mass female celibacy, as this demographic data was understood at the time, threatened the credibility of an expanding bourgeois ideal of marriage as a domestic retreat from the cold world of alienated productive labor and a site for accumulating unwaged reproductive labor. In this article I examine the chronically single, proto-asexual "odd woman," a now largely forgotten category of pathological femininity that absorbed anxieties about the collapse of the family, heterosexuality, and ultimately the English race elicited by mass celibacy. Tracing the odd woman's cultural circulation, the article exhumes this figure's role in the official foundation of English eugenics and in the intimately connected "New Woman" movement, an early form of feminist sexual politics. New Woman fiction, popularizing eugenic theory, made erotic desire compulsory to healthy white womanhood, even as its feminist authors held out eros as a resource of freedom from sexual norms—a contradiction the odd woman highlighted. Acknowledging that eroticism does not in itself liquidate social hierarchies but early on in its discursive life coalesced with the rise of formal eugenics, I build on the work of scholars like Sharon Patricia Holland to attend to the racist life of eroticism and other losses entailed in eroticism's ongoing monopoly in the queer and feminist world-building imaginary. The present study was aimed at optimizing the selection strategy for enhancing reproductive efficiency and milk productivity of Alpine × Beetal crossbred goats. The data set included 2949 milk trait records across parities and 1389 milk records from first parity and corresponding reproductive traits. The traits included for analysis were 150‐day milk yield (150DMY), days in milk (DIM), peak yield (PY) and total milk yield (TMY). The litter size (LS) and litter weight (LW) were used for specifically formulating selection plan using indirect selection. The least squares mean for lactation traits during the first parity were 150DMY: 195.32 ± 2.09 kg, DIM: 236.42 ± 3.04 days, PY: 1.82 ± 0.02 kg, TMY: 269.62 ± 4.52 kg. Notably, Alpine × Beetal goats demonstrated genetic superiority pan India for milk productivity as compared to other native goat breeds. The least squares mean for 150DMY across all parities was 236 ± 3.13 kg. An animal model employing average information restricted maximum likelihood was used for (co)variance component estimation to get the genetic parameters. The analysis revealed total heritability estimates for 150DMY, DIM, PY and TMY as 0.18 ± 0.06, 0.04 ± 0.04, 0.12 ± 0.06 and 0.08 ± 0.05, respectively. Repeatability estimates for 150DMY, DIM, and TMY were 0.28 ± 0.04, 0.21 ± 0.03 and 0.37 ± 0.03, respectively. Bivariate analysis of 150DMY with reproductive traits revealed heritability for LS and LW as 0.05 ± 0.01 and 0.10 ± 0.01, respectively using Gibbs sampling. Strong and positive genetic correlations of 150DMY with other production and reproduction traits was observed, such as DIM (0.72), PY (0.98), TMY (0.88), LS (0.57) and LW (0.33). Moderate heritability and repeatability estimate of 150DMY, along with its positive correlation with production and reproductive traits suggested it as a suitable selection criterion for early selection and overall genetic progress of lactation traits. The genetic trend analysis showed an overall improvement in all these traits, with observed gain of 98.4 g per year for 150DMY, 0.04 days per year for DIM, 0.5 g per year for PY and 220.5 g per year for TMY. We observed that selecting based on 150DMY would lead to a favourable indirect improvement for LW as 79 g and LS 0.04 units per generation. We, therefore, recommend employing 150DMY as the single trait selection criteria to enhance both milk productivity and reproductive potential of Alpine × Beetal goats. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper uses critical race theory to analyze several case studies focused on the experiences of two restorative justice coordinators (RJCs), both Black women and how they understood and responded to perceived racial injustices in urban schools with white leadership. These schools were attempting to address unequal disciplinary practices toward students of color through restorative justice and the RJCs adapted their approaches to addressing racialized dynamics while also developing school-wide networks to foster broader critical reflection on race. Maslow suggests that a study of "superior" human specimen might have the potential to identify biological traits that distinguish flourishing individuals from those who are languishing. Maslow's recommendation is open to criticisms. First, his method is circular. Second, the thrust of Maslow's project has a eugenic ring to it. However, while Maslow's eugenic vision should be sidelined, his call for an understanding of normativity and the need to overcome the fact-value dichotomy in psychology and neuroscience are well-considered recommendations. A phenomenological approach to normativity presents a more authentically humanistic approach to consideration of normativity. Husserl's concept of optimal givenness and Merleau-Ponty's notion of maximum grip illustrate that normativity is a quality that can be identified at a pre-predicative, implicit level of operative intentionality. Based on an examination of the notions of optimal givenness and maximum grip, the article further suggests that, within the context of interpersonal relations, agapic love can be understood to operate as a normative and regulative idea for ethical relations. Since this form of intentionality instantiates itself into perceptual and motor habits, normative ethical relations may be subject to investigation within neuroscience, to the extent that it maintains an ongoing dialogue with phenomenology. Following the vote in favour of birth control at the 1930 Lambeth Conference, the Church of England became the first major Christian denomination explicitly to condone the use of birth control. This paper argues that the bishop of Winchester, Theodore Woods, was the previously unheralded principal actor responsible for reversing the position of the Church. Woods was convinced that the Church needed to 'modernise' its position in order to secure a receptive audience for its higher-ordered teachings on marriage, sex and especially procreation. The sub‐title of this essay refers to Antonio Gramsci's concept of "prevision"—understood as neither foresight nor prediction, but a method of political work that enables intervention in the present in order to change it. Prevision forms part of conjunctural analysis, which remains powerfully salient and urgent in our own time. Over the past decade attention to conjunctural analysis has surged across a number of disciplines. Yet some distinctly different modalities of conjunctural analysis are at play in this burgeoning work. The first two sections of this essay offer close readings of the conjunctural analyses of Gramsci and Stuart Hall; their respective relationships to the work of Louis Althusser; and the political work that conjunctural analysis was doing for each of them in relation to fascism and Thatcherism. Building on but moving beyond these analyses, the third section focuses on what it might mean to "globalise" conjunctural analysis in relation to the urgent challenges of the current conjuncture, in a way that sheds light on articulations of racist, gendered, sexualised, and other exclusionary and oppressive forms of difference in relation to class and capitalism. Despite recent calls to make geographical analyses more reproducible, formal attempts to reproduce or replicate published work remain largely absent from the geographic literature. The reproductions of geographic research that do exist typically focus on computational reproducibility—whether results can be recreated using data and code provided by the authors—rather than on evaluating the conclusion and internal validity and evidential value of the original analysis. However, knowing if a study is computationally reproducible is insufficient if the goal of a reproduction is to identify and correct errors in our knowledge. We argue that reproductions of geographic work should focus on assessing whether the findings and claims made in existing empirical studies are well supported by the evidence presented. We aim to facilitate this transition by introducing a model framework for conducting reproduction studies, demonstrating its use, and reporting the findings of three exemplar studies. We present three model reproductions of geographical analyses of COVID‐19 based on a common, open access template. Each reproduction attempt is published as an open access repository, complete with pre‐analysis plan, data, code, and final report. We find each study to be partially reproducible, but moving past computational reproducibility, our assessments reveal conceptual and methodological concerns that raise questions about the predictive value and the magnitude of the associations presented in each study. Collectively, these reproductions and our template materials offer a practical framework others can use to reproduce and replicate empirical spatial analyses and ultimately facilitate the identification and correction of errors in the geographic literature. Zied Babai This research empirically identifies the best-performing forecasting methods for the Effective Reproduction Number Rt of coronavirus disease 2019, the most used epidemiological parameter for policymaking during the pandemic. Furthermore, based on the most accurate forecasts for the United Kingdom, we model the excess exports and imports during the pandemic (using World Trade Organization data), whilst simultaneously controlling for governmental decisions, i.e. lockdown(s) and vaccination. We provide empirical evidence that the longer the lockdown lasts, the larger the cost to the economy is, predominantly for international trade. We show that imposing a lockdown leads to exports falling by 16.55% in the United Kingdom; without a lockdown, the respective decrease for the same period would be only 1.57%. On the other hand, efforts towards fast population vaccination improve the economy. We believe our results can help policymakers to make better decisions before and during future pandemics. In recent years, the discipline of statistics has begun reckoning with its difficult history. Institutions are reconsidering names that have honored key historical figures in statistics who have deep ties to eugenics movements and racial and class prejudice. These names, however, continue to appear in our classrooms, where we teach the methods created by these individuals, raising the question of how instructors should address their legacies. Three examples of famous statisticians and their work—Francis Galton's use of conditional probabilities to demonstrate "hereditary talent," Karl Pearson's attempt to quantify the intelligence of Jewish immigrant students, and Ronald A. Fisher's creation of the analysis of variance to de-emphasize environment in human development—highlight the intimate ties between statistics and eugenics. These examples, along with a discussion of the context of these men, eugenics movements, and the statisticians and scientists who opposed their eugenic programs, can humanize the field for students, teach them about the challenges in accurate and unbiased data collection and analysis, and connect historical mistakes to contemporary ethical issues.
