As large, high-dimensional data have become more common, software development is playing an increasingly important role in research across many different fields. This creates a need to adopt software engineering practices in research settings. Code review is the engineering practice of giving and receiving detailed feedback on a computer program. Consistent and continuous examination of the evolution of computer programs by others has been shown to be beneficial, especially when reviewers are familiar with the technical aspects of the software and also when they possess relevant domain expertise. The rules described in the present article provide information about the why, when, and how of code review. They provide the motivation for continual code reviews as a natural part of a rigorous research program. They provide practical guidelines for conducting review of code both in person, as a "lab meeting for code," as well as asynchronously, using industry-standard online tools. A set of guidelines is provided for the nitty-gritty details of code review, as well as for the etiquette of such a review. Both the technical and the social aspects of code review are covered to provide the reader with a comprehensive approach that facilitates an effective, enjoyable, and educational approach to code review. Palliative care (PC) clinicians are well poised to help people with disabilities (PWD) live well in the context of serious illness. PC prioritizes person-centered care with a focus on function, autonomy, and quality of life. This approach aligns with principles of high-quality care for PWD. An understanding of the unique experiences and needs of PWD can advance the delivery of comprehensive, equitable PC for this population. This paper addressed the identity work of female exercisers during menstruation. Specifically, we considered (a) behavioural expectations attached to the sport and exercise role identity during menstruation, (b) menstruation as a discreditable stigma, and (c) the impression management strategies that exercisers put in place to successfully enact the desired sport and exercise role identity during menstruation. Data were generated via 30 semi-structured interviews with female exercisers from diverse ethnic groups. Interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed, and analysed using phronetic iterative analysis. Data were interpreted through symbolic interactionist and dramaturgical theorisations of identity, impression management, and stigma. Our analysis highlighted the importance of the sport and exercise role identity, which was reflected in the time and money that the participants invested in their sport and exercise engagement. We illustrated that, during menstruation, behavioural expectations determined the participants’ hidden management of menstrual symptoms to ensure the successful enactment of their desired sport and exercise role identity. This was because menstruation represented a discreditable stigma, a blemish that had to be hidden away from the view of others. Our participants therefore implemented impression management strategies including the use of props (e.g. pain relief), and management of their appearance (e.g. clothing, hair, makeup), manner (e.g. a stoic expression), and staging (e.g. standing at the back of an exercise class) to help with the enactment of their sport and exercise role identity. We believe this study makes a substantial contribution to the literature addressing menstruation within sport and exercise by unpacking the norms and expectations associated with menstruation. In turn, this study is giving voice to the unique needs and experiences of menstruating exercises and with this, contributes to normalising conversations about menstruation and its impact on menstruators’ daily lives. In an 1817 letter, John Keats mentioned giving a copy of Jane Taylor's Essays in Rhyme, on Morals and Manners (1816) to his sister Fanny Keats. The reference to Jane Taylor hints at how and why Taylor captured Keats's interest. Keats acquired Taylor's book at a moment of peak aspiration when he was struggling to write his long, ambitious poem Endymion, and when he had switched publishers to Taylor and Hessey, the publisher of Jane Taylor and her mother Ann Martin Taylor. With a vision of himself as the publisher of major writers, John Taylor was able to gamble on Keats because the Taylors' books were steady sellers. This article argues that when Keats read Taylor's Essays in Rhyme, he read a work that met with a more favourable reception than did his own early work. This article further underscores that the commercial trajectories of the Taylors and Keats were intertwined. The profits from the Taylors' books served to underwrite the publishing of Keats's work. This study examined the metaphorical expressions of death in Chinese quadrisyllabic idioms. Specifically, the research investigated the cultural connotations and implications conveyed through death-related idioms by analyzing metaphorical examples. Adopting the 'Great Chain of Being' framework (Lakoff and Turner, 1989), a total of 579 death-related idioms with metaphorical and euphemistic meanings were classified and examined. These idioms were further categorized based on the gender of the deceased as well as the initial metaphors and expressions employed. Our research findings highlight cultural parallels evident in death-related idiomatic expressions. Both English and Chinese languages employ metaphors like "DEATH IS SLEEP" and "DEATH IS DEPARTURE." These pervasive metaphors can be attributed to shared aspects of the human experience. Meanwhile, our findings also revealed a strong intertwining of metaphors and culture within death-related idioms, such that the metaphor "TO DIE IS TO FALL" is frequently used in Mandarin but is not as common in English. The metaphorical mapping mechanisms employed in these idioms reflect the Chinese way of projecting thoughts onto objects and highlight the unique features of the Chinese language. Chinese culture places great emphasis on social classes, relationships, and hierarchical structures. Email etiquette is an important skill, especially in professional settings. Research demonstrates that undergraduate students follow email rules when given written instructions plus an example. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the effects of computer‐based email instruction on undergraduate students' email etiquette and to assess the social validity of that instruction. The email instruction package was delivered through an online learning management system and consisted of written instructions plus a model, a quiz, and quiz feedback. We measured email etiquette by scoring emails from course assignments using a checklist. The instruction package produced a replicated increase in mean email checklist scores across two sections of introductory psychology, and checklist scores were elevated when participants sent emails in a novel context. The results of the social‐validity assessments suggest that the goals were important, the procedures were acceptable, and there were meaningful improvements in email etiquette for some participants. Human interactions are guided by rules, guidelines, and social norms—a tacit understanding of what is adequate in a given context. With interactions being increasingly digitally mediated, understanding how behavior is regulated in these environments becomes imperative. In this paper, we provide an overview of the literature on netiquette and how usage of the term developed over time. We then present findings from five exploratory focus groups, discussing general characteristics of netiquette, how users acquire and adapt netiquette, as well as the social dynamics associated with netiquette. Findings suggest that netiquette dynamically interacts with social, psychological, and environmental factors. We thus propose integrating the netiquette literature with research on social norms and conceptualize netiquette as digital social norms. The paper identifies five areas for further research that will deepen our understanding of how netiquette evolves, how it is perceived by users, and how it impacts their everyday experiences. Summary: On 1 October 2004, a new Royal Netherlands Embassy building opened in Warsaw, Poland. Its striking, contemporary appearance surprises and seduces at the same time: glass, concrete and wood artfully intersect in a sophisticated design that champions transparency and openness. This four-year building project commissioned by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs was entrusted to the highly acclaimed Dutch architect Erick van Egeraat (b. 1956). His carefully conceived architectural programme invites a wider discussion on the ways in which embassy architecture can support the aspirations of modern diplomacy. To this end, this article situates the Dutch Embassy building within the wider context of Dutch–Polish diplo-matic relations and examines how its design contributes to defining the practice of Dutch diplomacy. The circumstances faced during emergency incidents are characteristically physical, situational or time-critical, but little is known about how people manage their periods in these extreme settings. This study examined the attitudes, experiences and practices of managing menstruation by emergency services personnel in Australia while deployed operationally. Using a mixed-methods approach, a survey (n=287) collected data about operational roles, period characteristics, period management during operations and period stigmatisation. The findings show that navigating and solving the intersections between periods and the demanding circumstances of deployment is given substantial consideration by people who menstruate. Participants actively found solutions to the various routines, etiquettes and discomforts of menstruation to maintain service to their operational roles, despite problematic influences of period character and menstrual symptoms, menstrual products, hygiene, toileting, privacy and stigmatisation. Such selfdetermination suggests identity formation as competent first responders who also menstruate. However, externalities of menstruation that could be better accommodated in operational settings include toileting, bodily hygiene, field privacy, menstrual product supplies, used product disposal or cleaning, support, education and training. The need to study the concept of "politeness" from the point of view of its linguistic and cultural nature is caused by the desire to study the national identity of speech etiquette in different cultural spaces and conditions. The aim of the work was to form an idea about the specifics of the implementation and understanding of the concept of "politeness" in the Uzbek information field. In this study, the following methods were used: contextual, conceptual, communicative, linguocultural, analytical-synthetic, and comparative. This study is focused on the study of key lexical meanings (stylistically neutral and marked, basic and additional) that are within the functional-semantic field of the concept "politeness." With the help of contextual study of different variants of the use of the lexeme, the meanings were distributed in the conceptual structure (core, near and far periphery). Also, the key etiquette formulas representing the originality and national-specific features of the Uzbek linguocultural tradition were considered. The importance of politeness in the information space of Uzbekistan is assessed, including with the help of both positive and negative associations, that is, from an axiological point of view. Speech etiquette and linguistic formulas were considered from the point of view of the influence of social, cultural, and political values of the Uzbek people. In the process of analyzing the lexical layer, the boundaries of the functional-semantic field of the concept "politeness" were determined: from the principles of communication and a set of rules of etiquette to the strategy of obtaining benefits from communication and insincere attitude. In the future, this work can be used for comparative analysis of the conceptual structure of politeness with models presented in other close and distant languages, comparison of speech etiquette and linguistic formulas in different national cultures. Digital technologies are gaining more and more popularity in a person's life and radically affect the communication process. It is necessary to create appropriate limits (norms and rules of etiquette behaviour) in the business communication. This article analyzes articles devoted to the culture of business communication in the digital environment, comprehends the personal experience of the authors, analyzes the results of a questionnaire of students of a technical university about digital etiquette, emphasizes the importance of forming a culture of business communication among students.

Technical and practical advancements in Artificial Intelligence (AI) have led to AI teammates working alongside humans in an area known as human-agent teaming. While critical past research has shown the benefit to trust driven by the incorporation of interaction rules and structures (i.e. etiquette) in both AI tools and robotic teammates, research has yet to explicitly examine etiquette for digital AI teammates. Given the historic importance of trust within human-agent teams, the identification of etiquette's impact within said teams should be paramount. Thus, this study empirically evaluates the impact of AI teammate etiquette through a mixed-methods study that compares AI teammates that either adhere to or ignore traditional etiquette standards for machine systems. The quantitative results show that traditional etiquette adherence leads to greater trust, perceived performance of the AI, and perceived performance of the team as a whole. However, qualitative results reveal that not all traditional etiquette behaviors have universal appeal due to the presence of individual differences. This research provides the first empirical and explicit exploration of etiquette within human-agent teams, and the results of this study should be used further design specific etiquette behaviors for AI teammates. This article aims to analyze the Decameron taking into account the relational and social dynamics of every human relationship. The work presents itself as a model of etiquette of speech, life, death and passions, because balance and respect for others, values that are hidden in all the stories, anticipate the sixteenth-century concepts of civilization and etiquette, both evolutions of the principle of courtesy. The relational dimensions are translated on the basis of an implicit and necessary social order, canceled by the plague, which must be maintained for there to be harmony; in this regard, Goffmanian sociology finds a coherent witness in the Decameron. Boccaccio’s anthropological choice - to entrust a possible ethical solution to the brigade - is the true distinctive feature of the equality represented by the Decameron.

This paper analyses the nineteenth-century discourse around the human body. It examines two corpora: Charles Dickens's works and contemporary writings. In both contexts, the body is observed through a detailed focus on its individual parts. This study employs a corpus-driven approach to investigate the vocabulary used to describe the body in these two corpora, providing complementary explanations to traditional close reading methods. The findings indicate that Victorian authors, including Dickens, tend to use nouns associated with time and space when representing the body, while also placing significant emphasis on codes of etiquette in the depiction of its physical actions. In Dickens's corpus, nouns related to the body are influenced by gender ideology. Furthermore, a gender-based sub-corpus analysis, particularly focusing on verbs, highlights the disparities in agency between male and female bodies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The principle of reasonable accommodation according to Article 2 of the UNCRPD is defined as ‘necessary and appropriate modification and adjustments not imposing a disproportionate or undue burden, where needed in a particular case, to ensure to persons with disabilities the enjoyment or exercise on an equal basis with others of all human rights and fundamental freedoms’. Exploring the relationship between inclusive policies enacted in institutions of higher education in India, and their impact on those who claim accommodation, we discuss the nature of care that informs and animates such interactions. Drawing on feminist disability studies scholarship on care, particularly, Akemi Nishida’s recommendation that care is inherently collective we analyse two sets of transactions selected for study as enabling care in patronizing and charitable manners, while simultaneously ignoring the politics of responding to and providing accommodations. We find that institutional responses to accommodation claims are less reflective of the socio-political and affective aspects integral to the RA principle. Instead, the focus seems to be on providing either technocratic solutions or interpreting RA claims as causing undue burden. This study was conducted to determine the measures taken and tried to be taken by Şanlıurfa Metropolitan Municipality for the protection of common areas where everyone can freely enter and use and where consumption by users cannot be prevented. Case study, one of the qualitative research designs, was used in the study. The sample group of the study consists of senior managers authorized to make decisions in Şanlıurfa Metropolitan Municipality. Within the scope of the research, interviews were conducted with senior managers in Şanlıurfa Metropolitan Municipality. The data obtained from the interviews were analyzed in MAXQDA qualitative data analysis program. As a result of the study, it is understood that Şanlıurfa Metropolitan Municipality utilizes municipal personnel to a great extent in protecting common areas. In addition, on the one hand, it is emphasized that Şanlıurfa Metropolitan Municipality does not take clear deterrent measures for the protection of common areas, and on the other hand, the loss of importance of the rules of etiquette today compared to the past is seen as the reason for the destruction of common areas. This article explores the influence of Josse Bade's commentary on Alexander Barclay's Eclogues. Barclay incorporated material from Bade's commentary into his own work, particularly in Eclogues 4 and 5, but also in Eclogues 1-3. The article provides specific examples of passages where Barclay used Bade's commentary. It discusses the role of genethliacists, who study natal horoscopes and are associated with the planet Mercury. The text also explores the differences between rural and urban lifestyles and the stereotypes associated with them. It concludes by mentioning biblical figures who were shepherds before attaining positions of power. The article also touches on themes related to human behavior, societal norms, alchemy, the vices of city-dwellers, the dangers faced by soldiers, and the perception of blackness. Throughout history, the correct understanding of the Hadiths has been considered important, and many studies and researches have been carried out for this purpose, both in the past and today. Some hadith sciences and commentaries that focus more on the text of the hadith are works written for this purpose. In this research, we mainly focused on how some hadiths should be understood and examined the meaning of the narrations containing the expression "لا يؤمن احدكم ". This is because this expression does not have the same meaning in all the narratives where it is in use. If the principles of faith are mentioned in the content of the narrative in which the expression is used, the expression is used in the literal sense, but if the social relations are mentioned in the content of the narrative, the expression is used in the figurative sense. In other words, in the narrations whose content consists of the principles of faith, this expression is attributed to the negation of the original faith, while in the narrations that deal with matters outside the principles of faith, it is referred to the perfection of faith. In this respect, it can be said that the content of the narration determines the meaning of the expression "he cannot have believed". In view of this situation, the narrations on this subject were studied under two main headings: "Narrations on the Origin of Faith" and "Narrations on the Perfection of Faith". Users of escalators and moving walkways with sufficient space to accommodate two lanes of users often follow an implied etiquette for the two lanes: one for walking and one for standing (in the US, China, and many countries, the convention is "walk left, stand right"). When there is high volume, e.g., when exiting a subway or train station or at the conclusion of an athletic event, the escalators often experience bottleneck congestion that constitutes the primary source of delay. It has been suggested that during such high-congestion periods, it would be more efficient if everyone just stood in both lanes, with empirical evidence used to support this counterintuitive finding. Simple deterministic queueing models are used to show under what conditions such results hold and also to provide further insights regarding tradeoffs between performance metrics as a function of the distribution of walkers and standers, which could inform practical implementation policies to increase efficiency. The Victorians were notorious for their preoccupation with the posture and carriage of men and women, by which they outlined the contours of their refinement and moral characters. Drawing on Victorian etiquette manuals and modern social psychological studies regarding sitting postures, this article addresses scenes and melodramas featuring seats in Charles Dickens's Our Mutual Friend so as to reveal how Dickens has created a scathing satire on the respectable pretension and deep moral vices of Victorian society through his seemingly exaggerated description of characters' sitting manners. It argues that seat performance is not only a crucial means for Victorians' self-representation but also a shrewd strategy for domination. While Dickens's caricatured depictions of Lammle's and Fledgeby's abominable sitting manners manifests his biting attacks on Victorian predatory fortune-hunters' thirst for power and money, his rendition of Jenny's and Bella's questionable sitting poses lays bare the miseries and imprisonment of women in that era. One of the most spectacular events of the Ottoman experience of modernity was the inauguration of the Ottoman General Exposition in Istanbul in 1863. The ancient Hippodrome, which is one of the most prominent venues of the city and the setting of memorable celebrations and festivals for centuries, hosted the event and provided the visitors with the opportunity to become part of the modern regimes of gaze and spectacle. This article posits three observer roles to reveal the multilayered structure of urban spectacle in mid-century Istanbul, namely the sultanic gaze, spectacle of the ordinary citizens, and the mediated experience of the foreigner. To understand the particularities of each position, I utilize several visual and textual documents about the exhibition event. Though just a single case in Ottoman urban history, the exposition enables us to understand how the new manner of modern urban spectacle emerged during a spectacular public event in Istanbul. The use of social media in pathology has broadly had a positive impact on pathology education and outreach with the frequent posting of high-quality educational material of potential value to trainees, practicing pathologists, and other clinical and laboratory specialists. These posts are also of potential utility and interest to members of the public, who are now more than ever able to gain a window into the field and the role of pathologists in their medical care. There can be a lighthearted aspect to teaching material with the use of food items/analogies, emojis, or other descriptors, which may cross over into the classroom. However, when pathology discussion is taken to a public forum, such as on Twitter (parent company: X Corp.), there is the potential for posted material to be misunderstood, such as when certain emojis or adjectives may be used to describe a human disease state or patient sample. The authors present examples of potential areas of caution, suggestions of how to create a positive impact, and brief guidelines for social media etiquette on #PathTwitter that may apply to other social media platforms widely used by pathologists (including, but not limited to, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and KiKo). While the points discussed here may be common knowledge and well-known to pathologists who use social media for virtual medical education, the concerns mentioned here (such as using language like "beautiful" to describe abnormal mitotic figures and cancer cells) still exist and, henceforth, bear reinforcing. This article examines the social practices and material culture surrounding the consumption of chocolate in eighteenth-century Spain, through the practice of dipping bizcochos (sponge biscuits). Yet dipping biscuits into chocolate appears ubiquitously in early modern textual and visual sources, this custom has been mostly overlooked by historians. By focusing on the materiality of chocolate consumption, this study offers another example of a more complicated and nuanced story of 'the civilising process' and manners in the eighteenth century. An examination of underexplored visual, textual and material evidence allows us to further our understanding of how the introduction of chocolate had a profound impact on Spanish economies, culture and society. Overall, the focus on bizcochos (and dipping) opens a window to explore broader cultural phenomena regarding sociability, table manners, and gender relations in the Spanish Enlightenment. This paper presents an exploration of turn-taking strategies and their reflection of the politeness principle in interview programs. Conversations, while appearing effortless, require coordination of multiple cognitive processes, including turn-taking. Turn-taking, an integral part of any multi-party conversation, can be impolite when inappropriate. Drawing from previous research on turn-taking and the prisoner's dilemma, this study examines the strategies employed by guests and hosts in reality talk shows, particularly focusing on how these strategies reflect the Politeness Principle. This research analyzes the specific turn-taking strategies and their politeness implications. The findings contribute to a deeper understanding of turn-taking in interview settings and their significance in maintaining politeness and effective communication. Religious protest, such as the protest that Job expresses, reveals the manners in which believers experience the absurd while hanging on to God. The purpose of this article is to explore the "grammar" of this paradoxical faith stance by bringing Kierkegaard and Camus to bear upon it, and thereby to show the "family resemblance" between Job, Camus's "absurd man," and the Kierkegaardian believer. I begin with a discussion of experiences of the absurd that give rise to religious protest. I then turn to Kierkegaard to explore the manners in which "faith's thought" renders the "experience of the absurd" a religious one, while pushing the believer further into the absurd. The research aims to explore the differences in politeness strategies between Pakistani males and females, using English as their second language, and Native American males and females using English as their first language, specifically in the context of TV talk shows. The study investigates how politeness strategies vary based on gender, language proficiency, and cultural background, with a focus on positive and negative face-saving acts. The research methodology includes a quantitative analysis of twenty English-language TV talk shows from American and Pakistani channels, examining the politeness strategies used by hosts and guests of different genders. Findings of this study suggest that Pakistani speakers, especially males, tend to use more positive face-saving acts in interactions with females, while American speakers exhibit similar patterns but with variations based on cultural norms and language skills. Both cultures establish a preference for maintaining positive face and avoiding negative face-threatening acts, especially in cross gender interactions. The research study adds to what we already know about how language and gender are connected. It gives us new information about how people use politeness when they communicate with each other across different cultures. It also shows us how a person's language skills, their culture, and their gender all affect how they communicate with others. Bible journaling is a creative practice that has become increasingly popular within Christian communities over the past few years, particularly in the United States and the Netherlands. Journalers decorate, illustrate, and annotate their Bibles with colourful drawings and extensive notes as a devotional practice and as a way of shaping personal connections with the transcendent. When comparing these practices with early modern Bible use, striking parallels appear. These can provide further insight into the why of the active involvement of believers in the material construction and customisation of Bibles. Both modern and early modern Bible use activities can be understood as forms of 'vernacular religious creativity', as individuals engage in a creative manner with and within the material space of their Bibles in order to establish meaningful connections with a higher entity. This article centers around the early translation of the term Li 礼 in the Analects of Confucius (论语). This Latin translation shows that the interpretation of the Confucian term Li 礼 mostly did not include any religious meaning. This article also centers on the personal formation of the Jesuits of that time. Taking Michele Ruggieri as reference, this article details how studies based on the Latin Classics (especially Cicero) provided them with a reference to interpret this term as unrelated to religious worship. When the Jesuits arrived in China, at the end of the Ming dynasty, strong emphasis was given to the proper etiquette towards state officials. This in turn derived from the situation in the imperial court. In this historical environment, the Confucian rites (Li 礼) were interpreted as "good manners". This study highlights the integration of speech acts and politeness in two short stories, "Anandi" (an Urdu short story) and "Overcoat" (an English short story), both by Ghulam Abbas. The focus is on how speech acts and politeness contribute to the portrayal of societal image and the theme of appearance versus reality. The stories were selected by the same author to see from the comparative lens to analyze pragmatic features hidden behind the textual instances. For this purpose, 'Speech Act Theory' has been employed proposed by Langshaw Austin (1962). Different types of speech acts, including locutionary, illocutionary, and perlocutionary acts, to see how they make language use more purposebased in context. Politeness levels embedded in the content were also analyzed to understand their portrayal of societal norms. Results showed that speech acts significantly enhance language use by adding purpose and context. Locutionary, illocutionary, and perlocutionary acts contributed to depicting societal norms and values. Politeness was crucial in portraying societal expectations and maintaining face in social interactions. Further studies should explore speech acts and politeness in various cultural contexts and genres to gain a broader understanding of their impact on communication. In the eighteenth century, a period dominated by linguistic correctness, propriety and etiquette, appropriate forms of address are a customary feature in correspondence and a key means by which individuals are able to construct their social identity in light of their relationships with others. In this context, and framed within the fields of historical sociolinguistics and historical sociopragmatics, this paper explores the role of direct address as a socially-governed linguistic practice and as an index of politeness, and the focus lies in intra-speaker variation in the use of personal names and honorifics in the opening, body and subscription parts of the letter. The study is based on a set of 170 private letters written by Mary Hamilton (1756–1816), courtier, diarist and a member of the Bluestocking circle, and the analysis considers notions traditionally connected with pragmatic language use such as distance, power and politeness, bearing in mind other content-dependent factors as well. People learn about social groups by reading and hearing verbal statements. We investigated if the perceived truth and acceptability of such statements depend on whether they are implicitly vs. explicitly comparative (e.g., "Women are brave" vs. "Women are braver than men"). Participants (Study 1: Ns = 259; Study 2: N = 246) rated the truth, acceptability, familiarity, and positivity of implicitly vs. explicitly comparative, stereotypical vs. counter-stereotypical statements about positive vs. negative features. Consistent with an Etiquette Hypothesis, implicitly (vs. explicitly) comparative statements about positive features were judged as truer and more acceptable, presumably because they adhered better to a positivity norm. Consistent with a Fluency Hypothesis, stereotypical explicitly (vs. implicitly) comparative statements about age groups were judged as truer, presumably because of higher ease-of-processing. Thus, mechanisms affecting judgments vary somewhat with the groups compared. We discuss the role of metacognitive and normative processes in stereotype maintenance and stereotype change. An editorial is presented on the evolution of politeness studies over the past 20 years, spurred by conferences in 2002 and 2022 with contributions from scholars revisiting key concepts. Topics include the ongoing debate between first-order and second-order perspectives, the nuanced exploration of politeness and impoliteness beyond binary categorizations, and the need for continued theoretical development to address complexities in interpersonal communication.

Historical politeness scholars use Discernment as a second-order metaterm for compulsory social behaviour that is scripted according to circumstances and rank difference. However, in Renaissance courtesy books the Italian verb discernere 'to discern' has a first-order meaning: to individually work out appropriate behaviour when the fit of rules to circumstances is unclear. Discernment1 and Discernment2 appear to contradict each other. This paper addresses a theory gap: a theory of Discernment2 must unravel the link with Discernment1, given that Discernment1 functions as a metaterm in prescriptive politeness sources from a historical period for which scholars believe social practices are determined by Discernment2. Using a self-built corpus of ca. one hundred nineteenth-century etiquette books in US-UK English, French, Italian and Dutch, I conduct a semantic analysis of discern* (92 hits) and its collocate "tact", tact, tatto, takt (575 hits), which point to a practical type of reasoning, to carry out a careful assessment of the unique and complex situation at hand before deciding on a course of action. However detailed etiquette scripts are, discernment (tact) is needed to process the complexity of real-life circumstances. Hence, Discernment1 and 2 appear complementary. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper argues for a distinction between "conduct politeness" and "etiquette politeness", where the former refers to the propriety of what people do and the latter to the decorum of how people do things. In everyday discourse, the distinction is often fuzzy, but as a second order distinction the terminology provides a useful analytical tool. In the history of politeness in English, a bifurcation into the two types of politeness can be observed in the eighteenth century, and today the distinction provides additional conceptual clarity of the changing theoretical focus during the three waves of politeness theory. After a review of the historical link between morals and manners, a brief case study focuses on their separation in the eighteenth century. A final discussion applies the distinction to the paradox that politeness is often seen as a positive thing that, unfortunately, is on the decline and as a negative thing because it is insincere, superficial and hypocritical.
