This essay intercedes in our understanding of the temporal formations that characterized New England's Great Awakening (1730s-1740s). It takes as its case study the Connecticut farmer Nathan Cole, whose spiritual new birth scholarship has been seen as prototypical of both the instantaneity and the affect of evangelical conversion. This essay contests the predominance of these figurations of the awakenings. Offering literary criticism's first full engagement with Cole's archive, rather than keeping to well-known short extracts from his "Spiritual Travels," it posits the interval as the temporal and literary form that structures Cole's writing. The essay thus reads Cole's narrative as something more than a lay account that testifies to evangelical feeling, arguing that his writing instead exhibits continuities with seventeenth-century habits of thought. Particularly, it traces how Cole's writing carries into the eighteenth century Puritan labors to apprehend doctrines (such as predestination) that were, fundamentally, matters of time. In treating Cole's text as a document of theological heft and temporal consciousness, as well as spiritual encounter, this essay also asks scholars to consider how turning toward cognitive aspects of devotion provokes our field's understanding of genre, time, and evangelical experience. This essay attempts to rethink what is here called "the Socratic Moment" in Western philosophy, that is, the unique turn that philosophy takes in the early Socratic dialogues of Plato. The essay begins by contesting the traditional view that the goal of Socratic inquiry is to gain irrefutable knowledge of ethical concepts such as courage, justice, friendship, and the holy for the purposes of future action. It argues instead, through a close reading of key passages from Plato's Apology and Euthyphro, that Socratic inquiry actually begins with the concept under consideration in order to put the interlocutor themself—their beliefs and their actions—into question. In 2023, the medical journal Resuscitation published the results of the latest study by Sam Parnia and his team, the AWARE II, in which they aimed to study consciousness after cardiac arrest and during the resuscitation process. Once again, the main objective was to detect any near-death experience (NDE) in which explicit memories occurred, either visual--of hidden images--or auditory. An important novelty was the measurement of EEG and cerebral oximetry during the brief pauses of CPR. Out of 28 interviews the researchers conducted with survivors, six patients reported NDEs, but none of them explicitly recalled either the hidden images or the auditory stimuli. However, in other patients from the study, some EEG activity that the authors deemed "compatible with consciousness" was detected during resuscitation, at least in some frequencies and brain areas. These data reopened the debate about whether the lucid consciousness of NDEs is generated by the dying brain. Parnia's own reflections in his earlier Bigelow contest essay denied this possibility. The AWARE II results did not resolve this question, but Parnia and his team suggested a possible explanation, still very theoretical, of NDEs based on brain disinhibition and ac-tivation of dormant brain circuits that would give access to "new dimensions of reality". Up to 1670, when the Theological-Political Treatise was published, Spinoza supported Johan De Witt's government, against the House of Orange and the orthodox Calvinists. By 1676, while writing the Political Treatise, that fight had been lost, and Spinoza was now positively opposed to the sovereign of his country. Scholars argue that the violence that marked the intervening "year of disaster" of 1672 saw security prioritised in the Political Treatise, where the Theological-Political Treatise had focused on freedom. This essay contests this view. Analysing the Political Treatise's response to contemporary events, and comparing the two books, it sees the Political Treatise as less concerned than the earlier text with the stability of the sovereign, and more concerned with the subjects' freedom from oppression by the sovereign: more than a dispassionate treatise on the organization of the state, it is a plea for the role of the ordinary citizen, written in response to authoritarian times. We assessed the 29 winning essays of the Bigelow Institute of Consciousness Studies (BICS) contest using an evidence hierarchy approach adopted by many scientific fields. Two independent judges rated the target essays for their quality of scientific evidence, reproducibility, and replicability using an evidence hierarchy adapted from several published models that accommodate both qualitative and quantitative evidence. According to our criteria, six essays (20.7%) were categorized as the highest level of scientific evidence, four essays (13.8%) were categorized at a medium level of scientific evidence, whereas the remaining 19 essays (65.5%) were considered a low level of scientific evidence. The overall agreement of the essay rankings between the present authors' classifications of evidence quality and the rating system used by the BICS judges was only 44.8%, with a nonsignificant Spearman's rho correlation of .03. This result indicates extremely little concordance (overlap) of the two evaluation systems, which corroborates prior research on the critical shortcomings of evidence hierarchies. The essays representing the highest level of scientific evidence per our criteria involved near-death experiences and mental mediumship. For other anomalies that ostensibly support the survival hypothesis (e.g., physical mediumship or electronic voice phenomena), more studies with refined experimental designs are needed to improve their quality of evidence as defined in current scientific terms. BICS was founded in 2020 to communicate, facilitate, educate, and organize scientific research and exploration into the survival of human consciousness (SOHC) after permanent bodily death. In early 2021 BICS announced an essay contest on the best evidence for survival of human consciousness with $950,000 in prizes. Essay contestants were tasked to present evidence for SOHC after death beyond a reasonable doubt. "Beyond a reasonable doubt" is the most demanding and rigorous burden of proof in the criminal justice legal system and BICS challenged essay contestants to achieve this very high bar in order to maximize the focus on presentation of evidence from as many directions and sources as possible. By December 2020, seven respected judges from the research and academic communities were recruited. BICS received 1300 applications from all continents and invited 264 authors and groups of authors to submit essays. 204 essays were received from 38 countries. Following an intensive five-month judging process, a large group of essays was down-selected. So high was the standard among the dozens of essays that the judges had difficulty in choosing three essays for the top prizes. After several more rounds, eventually 29 essays were chosen and the prize money was increased from $950,000 to $1,800,000. Prizes were awarded at a gala in Las Vegas on December 4, 2021. Following the conclusion of the BICS essay contest, the organization is preparing for another major program. On September 1, 2022, BICS will unveil "Challenge 2023," which is a targeted grants program that is aimed at funding research proposals on SOHC with a particular focus on contact and communication with the afterlife. Prior experimental studies of anomalous information reception (AIR) have been touted as strong evidence for postmortem survival of consciousness yet are plagued by several methodological weaknesses that preclude clear evidence of positive results. The present team provides an adversarial collaboration to identify and compensate for the major limitations of these previous approaches. We outline a more rigorous preregistered study design that eliminates or minimizes researcher bias in (a) data cleaning and (b) statistical analysis. Obtaining positive results with our recommended design would arguably yield data that skeptics and sympathetic researchers would agree is more clearly interpretable and offers stronger support for a survivalist interpretation. However, this proposed study is not intended to be definitive but rather only a next step in a research program that aims to improve on earlier published efforts. It would also admittedly be time-consuming and expensive to implement, as well as raise ethical considerations in utilizing vulnerable research populations. Keith Augustine's critical evaluation of the essay contest sponsored by the Bigelow Institute of Consciousness Studies (BICS) is an interesting but problematic review. It mixes reasonable and detailed criticisms of the contest and many of the winning essays with a disappointing reliance on some of the most trite and superficial criticisms of parapsychological research. Ironically, Augustine criticizes the winning essays for using straw-man arguments and cherry-picked evidence even though many of his own arguments commit these same errors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Does a penny per month constitute a Basic Income? Were that penny to be paid individually, universally, and unconditionally, the answer would be 'yes', following the definition of Basic Income given by some of its leading advocates, be it organisations like the Basic Income Earth Network (BIEN) or prominent scholars such as Philippe Van Parijs. Some might be puzzled as to how this could be 'a capitalist road to communism', or give us 'freedom as the power to say no', both of which have been advocated by prominent researchers. The purpose of this paper is not to argue for or against their definition, but rather to situate it historiographically, enabling fruitful discussion. The paper will show how there was a widely shared assumption in the 1970s and 80s, at the early stages of both academic articulations and public discussion, that Basic Income comes with some notion of a threshold or level to be taken as a minimum or as adequate. The paper goes on to outline three issues that arise once the concept of a threshold is dropped from the definition. Examined in addition are five justifications for doing so. Much like any other idea, the concept of Basic Income is a social construct. By situating it here within a historical perspective, we wish to facilitate academic discussion regarding both the achievements and erasures that have occurred as a consequence of the concept's academic refinement—refinement that is in itself majorly indebted to BIEN and Van Parijs. One of the most difficult parts of the writing process for many teachers is publishing. It is easy to focus writing instruction on the process itself and give publishing much less time-or leave it out completely. Many teachers are unaware of options they have to help students publish outside of essay contests and often rely on gallery walks or student presentations that limit publications to within the classroom. But publishing is so beneficial for students both during the writing process and as whole learners. By publishing, students will more fully understand author's craft and the entirety of the writing process. They will also develop numerous soft skills like empathy and self-efficacy. Publishing leads to an increase in students' perception of themselves as learners and helps them take ownership of their writing. This essay makes the case for the 1968 community newspaper Black Newark as an archival site that provides an alternative account of the growth of the Black Power movement in the city of Newark. The issues written about in this radical publication are an abundant resource for historians and researchers of New Jersey culture and Black cultural production in the United States. This essay contests the fact that no books devoted to the history of the Black press in the United States or surveys of African American newspapers make mention of Black Newark. It is the aim of this essay to examine both the 1968 edition of Black Newark and the later 1972-1974 edition of Black New Ark with the express goal of including the publications in the archive of both the history of Newark, New Jersey, and the Black press in the United States.
