The aim of this work is therefore to model and simulate numerically different fatigue tests using intrinsic material parameters. The modeling of the fatigue tests proposed in this work is based on linear elastic fracture mechanics and the Paris law. This modeling is used to simulate four-point bending (4PB) and two-point bending (2PB) fatigue tests performed on the same asphalt mix using similar values of the model parameters. The results obtained are satisfying and attest that the same set of parameter values would be able to predict the mechanical response of different tests. 2PB fatigue tests are then carried out on a sand asphalt with digital images acquisition. The images recorded are processed by Digital Image Correlation (DIC) to provide the displacement and strain fields in the material as well as the crack paths. These are found not systematically identical for different samples of the same material undergoing similar test conditions because of heterogeneity of the material at local scale. The 2PB fatigue tests are then numerically simulated considering the crack paths determined from the DIC data. The results show that the scatter of the fatigue curves can be explained in part by the difference in crack path observed for the different samples.

The determination of the fatigue properties of asphalt mixes depends on the type of test performed as well as the method used to interpret the fatigue curve. The aim of this work is therefore to model and to reproduce numerically different fatigue tests by using intrinsic material parameters. To ensure the development of such approach, the first part of this thesis is devoted to carrying out two-point bending (2PB) fatigue tests and four-point bending (4PB) tests on a sand asphalt 0/2. The combined analysis of the kinematic fields obtained by digital image correlation and the thermal fields obtained by infrared thermography have improved the understanding of the phenomenology during fatigue tests as well as the analysis of the fatigue criteria proposed in the literature. Cracking and self-heating being the main phenomena in fatigue tests, a model based on cracking and self-heating was developed in the second part. It integrates viscoelastic behaviour, thermomechanical coupling and Paris law. This modeling allows to simulate 2PB and 4PB fatigue tests using the same parameters. The results show a good agreement between simulations and experimental data as well as the validation of the effect cracking path on the dispersion of fatigue curves. This work thus provides a basis for the reinterpretation of fatigue tests by simulating different types of fatigue test using intrinsic material parameters.; La détermination des propriétés de fatigue des enrobés bitumineux varie en fonction du type d'essai pratiqué ainsi que de la manière d’interpréter la courbe de fatigue. L'objectif de ce travail est de modéliser la réponse du matériau et de simuler numériquement différents essais de fatigue en utilisant les paramètres intrinsèques du matériau. La première partie de la thèse est consacrée à la réalisation des essais de fatigue en flexion sur poutre console et en flexion 4 points sur un sable bitume 0/2. Les analyses des champs cinématiques obtenus par corrélation d’images numériques et des champs thermiques obtenus par thermographie infrarouge ont permis d’améliorer la compréhension de la phénoménologie au cours des essais ainsi que l’analyse des critères de fatigue proposés dans la littérature. Comme la fissuration et l’échauffement thermique sont les principaux phénomènes observés, une modélisation basée sur la fissuration et l’échauffement a été développée dans la deuxième partie. Elle intègre un comportement viscoélastique, un couplage thermomécanique en associant la loi de Paris. Cette modélisation permet de simuler les essais de fatigue en flexion sur poutre console et en flexion 4 points au moyen d’un même jeu de paramètres. Les résultats montrent un bon accord entre les simulations et les données expérimentales ainsi que la validation de l’influence du trajet de fissuration sur la dispersion des courbes de fatigue. Ces travaux fournissent ainsi une base pour la réinterprétation des essais de fatigue grâce à la simulation du passage d’un essai à un autre au moyen de paramètres intrinsèques au matériau.

This paper reports an experimental study performed to investigate the effectiveness of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) laminates in extending fatigue life of old cracked metallic structures. Specimens consist of old metallic plates, mild steel and wrought iron, with one single crack emanating from a rivet hole. This cracking configuration has never been adopted in literature studies and was chosen to be representative of real cracked elements in riveted connections. Two different initial crack lengths before reinforcement, representing two degrees of fatigue damage, were adopted. Four strengthening configurations were investigated including single-sided and double-sided strengthened specimens, Normal Modulus (NM) CFRP plates with or without pre-stressing, and Ultra High Modulus (UHM) CFRP plates. «Beach marking» technique as well as crack gauge were used to monitor and record the crack propagation during fatigue loading. Experimental results show that the application of CFRP plates can effectively reduce the crack growth rate and extend the fatigue life. CFRP plates with high modulus were found to be more efficient. This study represents a contribution to the present state of research and provides some interesting results on crack propagation in CFRP repaired elements close to real riveted ones.

During the plastic deformation of crystalline materials, a soft plasticity, made up of many uncorrelated dislocation movements, can coexist with a wilder plasticity, in the form of collaborative movements: dislocation avalanches. The coexistence of the two plasticities depends on the establishment of a dislocation structure, which is supposed to hinder the spread of avalanches. It is proposed to study the correlation between microstructural evolutions and dislocation arrangements under cyclic loading on the one hand, and the nature of the collective dynamics of dislocations on the other hand, in the case of pure copper single crystals. Various stress imposed fatigue tests are performed to study the influence of (i) the loading path, (ii) the loading ratio and (iii) the crystallographic orientation on the plasticity phenomena. The acoustic emission (EA) technique is used to study both types of plasticity. Continuous EA, which can be considered as background noise resulting from the cumulative effect of many sources, is associated with mild plasticity. Discrete EA, with more energetic signals than those emitted continuously, is associated with wild plasticity. Dislocation microstructures are studied using EBSD (Electron Backscattered Diffraction) and ECCI (Electron Channeling Contrast Imaging) techniques at the end of each fatigue level. The EA-ECCI coupling provides valuable information on the dynamics of dislocations. The monitoring by ECCI, during a fatigue test at Rσ=0.1 shows that a given dislocation structure is stable only for given level of stress. The emergence of a dislocation structure act as an obstacle to avalanche movement. However, the application of a larger stress amplitude allows the rearrangement of the structure, which is largely in the form of dislocation avalanches that can travel longer distances than the dislocation mean free path. Small uncorrelated dislocation movements are confined within the dislocation structures, between dense dislocation arrangements (cells, walls, etc.). Mild plasticity is therefore increasingly restricted as the mean free path decreases. The various tests carried out show that the loading path (at Rσ=0.1) has no influence on the dislocation structure formed, but that the dynamics of the dislocations adapt to the way the material is loaded. The loading ratio (Rσ=-1) has a major influence on the formation of dislocation structures, with the emergence of veins, matrices, persistent slip bands and dense cells, but also on the dynamics of dislocations, with a gradual evolution of mild plasticity during cycles and a reduction in the number of avalanches during the hardening of the material. Concerning the influence of crystallographic orientation, a larger number of activated slip systems limit the contribution of avalanches to plasticity.; Pendant la déformation plastique des matériaux cristallins, une plasticité douce, faite de nombreux mouvements de dislocations non corrélés peut coexister avec une plasticité plus sauvage, sous la forme de mouvements collaboratifs : les avalanches de dislocations. Le rapport de chargement (Rσ=-1) a une grande influence sur la formation des structures de dislocations, avec l’émergence de structures veines, matrices, bandes de glissement persistant et cellules denses, mais aussi sur la dynamique des dislocations, avec une évolution progressive de la plasticité douce au cours des cycles et une réduction du nombre d’avalanches pendant le durcissement du matériau. Concernant l’influence de l’orientation cristallographique, un nombre plus important de systèmes de glissement activés permet de limiter la contribution des avalanches à la plasticité.

Pavement structures are designed to withstand continuous damage during their design life. Damage starts as soon as the pavement is open to traffic and increases with time. If maintenance activities are not considered in the initial design or considered but not applied during the service life, damage will grow to a point where rehabilitation may be the only and most expensive option left. In order to monitor the evolution of damage and its severity in pavement structures, a novel data compression approach based on cumulative measurements from a piezoelectric sensor is presented in this paper. Specifically, the piezoelectric sensor uses a thin film of polyvinylidene fluoride to sense the energy produced by the micro deformation generated due to the application of traffic loads. Epoxy solution has been used to encapsulate the membrane providing hardness and flexibility to withstand the high-loads and the high-temperatures during construction of the asphalt layer. The piezoelectric sensors have been exposed to three months of loading (approximately 1.0 million loads of 65 kN) at the French Institute of Science and Technology for Transport, Development and Networks (IFSTTAR) fatigue carrousel. Notably, the sensors survived the construction and testing. Reference measurements were made with a commercial conventional strain gauge specifically designed for measurements in hot mix asphalt layers. Results from the carrousel successfully demonstrate that the novel approach can be considered as a good indicator of damage progression, thus alleviating the need to measure strains in pavement for the purpose of damage tracking.

The steel manufacturers develop nowadays high strength steels as CP800 grade for automotive applications for the purpose of lightening vehicles. Such steels are strongly sensitive from the fatigue behaviour point of view to the surface defects generated by metal forming or cutting of steel sheets. Surface defects of different types and sizes were machined by electroerosion on CP800 specimens so that they are similar to the surface defects observed on steel sheets after stamping or cutting. The present study deals with the numerical and the experimental fatigue behaviour simulation of these specimens.The defect influence modelisation about the steel fatigue behaviour uses either the critical plane approach or the integral approach in multiaxial fatigue.The stress gradient influence contributes also to the fatigue life prediction of the defective simples.The numerical simulation aims to assess stress states and stress gradient fields within the tested specimens in the vicinity of their own surface defects. Accounting for stress gradients strongly improves the ability of multiaxial fatigue criteria to accurately predict the actual fatigue resistance of defective specimens. It shows also that multiaxial criteria have to be calibrated over fatigue test results with high stress gradients to properly predict the fatigue behaviour of high strength steel with surface small defect., L’innovation de l’industrie métallurgique des aciers pour le secteur automobile passe par la fabrication de nuances d’acier à haute résistance telle que le grade CP800. Les nuances d’acier sont très sensibles, du point de vue de leur comportement en fatigue, à la présence d’un défaut de surface comme ceux générés par la mise en forme des pièces ou par la découpe des tôles. Des défauts de plusieurs types et de différentes tailles, similaires à ceux rencontrés lors du poinçonnage ou de l’emboutissage des tôles, ont été reproduits par électroérosion sur des éprouvettes de la nuance d’acier CP800. Ces éprouvettes font l’objet de notre étude en fatigue sur les plans numérique et expérimental. La modélisation de l’influence de ces défauts en fatigue utilise les deux approches globale et de type plan critique de la fatigue multiaxiale, et avec prise en compte du gradient des contraintes.La simulation numérique vise à établir les champs des contraintes et leurs gradients au voisinage des défauts analysés expérimentalement. La prise en compte des gradients des contraintes permet aux critères de fatigue multiaxiaux une prévision du comportement réel en fatigue beaucoup plus juste de cette nuance d’acier en présence de défauts de surface. Prendre en compte l’influence du gradient de contrainte est indispensable pour une prévision correcte de la limite de fatigue du matériau à haute résistance en présence d’un défaut de petite taille.

Recycling of asphalt has become a well-established practice in many countries, however the road pavement industry remains a bulk consumer of extracted raw materials. Novel solutions that find root in circular economy concepts and life-cycle approaches are needed in order to enable optimisation of infrastructure resource efficiency, starting from the design stage and spanning the whole value chain in the construction sector. Itis within this framework that the present study presents a full-scale validation of asphalt mixtures specifically designed to ensure durability of flexible road pavements and at the same time enabling the reuse of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) through the incorporation of bio-materials as recycling agent. These bio-recycled asphalt mixtures have been first designed in laboratory and subsequently validated in a real scale experiment conducted at the accelerated pavement testing facilities at IFSTTAR. Four pavement sections were evaluated: three test sections with innovative bio-materials, and a reference section with a conventional, high modulus asphalt mix (EME2). Two tests were realized: a rutting test and a fatigue test and for each of them the evolution of bio-recycled asphalt mixtures properties as well as the pavement deteriorations were recorded and studied. Evolution of the bio-asphalt mixtures was monitored for a 5 months period after paving by a bespoke nondestructive micro-coring, extracting and recovering methodology developed at the Western Research Institute (WRI). The structural health of the pavement sections was monitored through periodic falling weight deflectometer (FWD) as well as with strain gages and temperature sensors. As a result the three tailored bio-asphalt mixtures performed similarly or better than the control mixture, both in terms of property evolutions and durability.

Composite materials are increasingly used as building materials, especially in civil engineering. However their fatigue behavior, especially when submitted to bending stress is still poorly understood. Thus, the development of appropriate structural health monitoring techniques are highly needed. The embedment of optical fiber sensors in a material obtained by pultrusion with the scope of monitoring the deformation of composite structures throughout its lifetime is one of the most promising way to get what is commonly called smart materials. This study focuses on the evaluation of the integrity of the instrumentation with Fiber-Bragg-Gratings that is embedded in composites, particularly in terms of quasi-static loading as well as fatigue. The final goal is to validate this technique so that it can apply successfully in SHM of large dimensions structures (20m x 7m).

Reinforcement using an interlayer system has been demonstrated for more than four decades as a multi-purpose solution to improve performance, to extend service life and thus to reduce maintenance costs of road pavements. Among a large number of existing interlayer systems, glass fibre grids have shown effective use in pavement reinforcement with a hot mix asphalt overlay. Recently they have received increasing attention from the pavement community. However, as for other types of interlayer systems, the mechanisms underlying the effectiveness and proper installation of this type of reinforcement system are still not fully understood, and the choice of the most appropriate grid (e.g. mesh size, tensile strength) and its optimal location in the pavement system are mainly based on experience. This article presents firstly a literature review on the use of glass fibre grids in pavement reinforcement. Then some results of recent full-scale tests on the accelerated pavement testing facility of the IFSTTAR are presented. They confirm that glass fibre grid properly installed near the bottom of the asphalt layer improves significantly the fatigue life of the reinforced pavement. They also demonstrate the efficiency of glass grid use under only a thin asphalt overlay. Finally, first results obtained using an original instrumentation of glass grid strands by means of strain gages, to understand better the mechanical behaviour of the glass fibre reinforcement in a new pavement structure are described.

Additive manufacturing offers new opportunities for industries to manufacture complex parts with no additional tooling and better optimization of the material used.This thesis is about the analysis of the mechanical properties and the damaging mechanisms of parts produced by additive manufacturing, using mechanical properties of casted and wrought parts as reference. This type of analysis is necessary in order to industrialize the process.The tensile and fatigue properties on Titanium Ti-6Al-4V and Aluminium AlSi7Mg0,6 were measured. The effects of the process, the manufacturing direction, the post-machining and the post-heat treatments were compared. Properties are at least at the level of casting.A correlation of these results with microstructures and fracture surfaces was made in order to extract the damaging mechanisms. A method to measure the criticity of the defects in a part was defined. Some of these hypotheses were verified using microtomographic in situ tensile tests.; La fabrication additive est un procédé offrant de nouvelles opportunités aux industriels pour fabriquer des pièces complexes, sans outillage spécifique et en optimisant la matière utilisée.Cette thèse présente les propriétés mécaniques de pièces réalisées par fabrication additive et l’analyse des mécanismes d’endommagement associés, en ayant comme référence les propriétés mécaniques des procédés de fonderie et de corroyage. Ce type d’analyse est indispensable pour l’industrialisation du procédé.Les propriétés en traction et en fatigue, sur des éprouvettes en titane Ti-6Al-4V et en aluminium AlSi7Mg0,6, ont été mesurées. Les effets du procédé de fabrication, de la direction de fabrication, du post-usinage et des post-traitements thermiques ont été comparés. Les propriétés sont au moins au niveau de la fonderie.Ces résultats ont été analysés en corrélation avec les microstructures et les faciès de rupture, afin de dégager des mécanismes d’endommagement. Les critères permettant de mesurer la criticité des défauts ont été définis.Certaines de ces hypothèses ont pu être vérifiées grâce à des essais de traction in situ au micro tomographe.

This PhD dissertation is part of the collaboration between the French Agency for Environment and Energy Management (ADEME), the companies Arkema and Malet and the Ecole Nationale de Travaux Publics de l’Etat (ENTPE). The aim of this dissertation is to study the thermo-mechanical behavior of asphalt mixes, specifically warm mix asphalts with and without Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP) in order to predict their fatigue life and to optimize their design by targeting sustainable development. Seven types of asphalt mixes are studied. They differ in their mixing method, RAP content, additives used and their content. Two types of mixing methods are studied: Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA), which serves as a reference, and Warm Mix Asphalt (WMA). Three RAP contents are considered: 0%, 30% and 50%. Two types of additives provided by Arkema are used : ETIMA (E) and ETIMA-BIO (B) with two contents for each of them (0% and 0.4%). The use of warm mix asphalt helps significantly reducing both energy consumption and the impact on health and environment. These innovations are significant contributions with respect to issues of sustainable development and environmental preservation. Four types of laboratory tests were performed: complex modulus tests, fatigue tests, Thermal Stress Restrained Specimen Tests (TSRST) and wave propagation tests. In the Linear ViscoElastic (LVE) behavior domain, complex modulus tests were performed on a wide range of temperatures (from -25°C to 45°C) and frequencies (from 0.03 Hz to 10 Hz). For each material, two specimens were tested. Values of complex modulus and complex Poisson’s ratio were obtained and modeled using the 2S2P1D analogies model, developed in the Laboratoire Génie Civil et Bâtiement (LGCB) of ENTPE. It was observed that this model can correctly simulate the LVE behavior of asphalt mixes. Fatigue behavior was studied by analyzing fatigue tests results. For each material, four or five specimens were tested. Four different failure criteria were used in order to evaluate fatigue life of materials. Low temperature behavior of materials was characterized using TSRST. For each material, three replicates were performed. Finally, wave propagation tests were carried out. The method to determine the time of flight of « P » and « S » waves and the impact resonance method are presented. These tests provide a non-destructive method to characterize materials, which easy to perform. Using those methods, values of complex modulus and Poisson's ratio of tested materials can be estimated. It is to be underlined that the tests performed in this PhD allow to obtaining some parameters which are required for asphalt pavement design. An important result obtained in this study is that warm mix asphalt combined with RAP and additives (ETIMA ou ETIMA-BIO) could perform as well as hot mix asphalt.; Cette thèse s’inscrit dans le cadre d’une collaboration entre le Laboratoire Génie Civil et Bâtiment (LGCB)/Laboratoire de Tribologie et Dynamique des Systèmes (LTDS) et l’entreprise Arkema, l’entreprise routière Malet, l’Agence de l’Environnement et de la Maîtrise de l’Énergie (ADEME). L’objectif de la thèse est l’étude du comportement thermomécanique des enrobés bitumineux, et spécifiquement les enrobés tièdes avec et sans agrégat d’enrobé (RAP, Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement), dans le but de prévoir leur durée de vie et d’optimiser leur dimensionnement dans un contexte de développement durable.Sept types d’enrobés bitumineux sont étudiés. Les enrobés diffèrent par leur procédé de fabrication, le pourcentage de RAP, les additifs et le pourcentage d’additif utilisé. Deux types de fabrications sont étudiées : à chaud (Hot Mix –HM) qui sert de référence et tièdes (Warm Mix –WM). Trois pourcentages de RAP sont considérés : 0%, 30% et 50%. Deux types d’additifs fournis par ARKEMA sont utilisés, ETIMA (E) et ETIMA-BIO (B), avec deux pourcentages, 0% et 0.4%. L’utilisation des enrobés tièdes contribue à réduire considérablement la consommation d’énergie, l’impact sanitaire et l’impact environnemental. D’autre part, l’ajout des RAP dans les enrobés permet d’augmenter le taux de recyclage des matières non renouvelables. Ces innovations participent à la prise en compte des enjeux du développement durable et de la préservation de l’environnement.Quatre types d’essais ont été réalisés. Ce sont : l’essai de module complexe, l’essai de fatigue, l’essai de retrait thermique empêché (TSRST) et l’essai de propagation d’ondes. Dans le domaine du comportement viscoélastique linéaire, les essais de module complexe sont réalisés sur une large gamme de températures (de -25°C à 45°C) et de fréquences (de 0.03Hz à 10Hz). Chaque test est dupliqué. Les résultats sont modélisés à l’aide du modèle analogique 2S2P1D qui a été développé au laboratoire LGCB de l’ENTPE. Ce modèle permet de modéliser correctement le comportement tridimensionnel viscoélastique linéaire des enrobés. Ensuite, le comportement en fatigue est étudié grâce à des essais de fatigue. Pour chaque matériau, quatre ou cinq éprouvettes sont testées. Quatre critères sont utilisés pour évaluer la durée de vie des matériaux. Puis, le comportement à basse température est caractérisé à l’aide de l’essai de retrait thermique empêché (TSRST). Pour chaque matériau, trois éprouvettes sont testées. Enfin, des essais de propagation d’ondes sont réalisés. La méthode de détermination du temps de vol des ondes « P » et des ondes « S » ainsi que la méthode Impact Résonance sont utilisées. Ces essais fournissent des mesures non destructives et faciles à réaliser. A partir de ces méthodes, on peut calculer les valeurs de modules et de coefficients de Poisson des matériaux.Soulignons que les essais réalisés permettent d’obtenir certain des paramètres utilisés pour le dimensionnement des chaussées. Un résultat essentiel de l’étude est la bonne performance des enrobés tièdes contenant des agrégats d’enrobés (RAP).

The excellent castability, relatively low production costs, and high strength to weight ratios make Al-Si-Mg cast alloys an attractive choice for use in cheaper and lighter engineering components, in both automotive and aerospace industries. However, it is well known that High Cycle Fatigue (HCF) lives (105 < Nf < 107 cycles) of cast components are severely reduced when casting defects (notably pores and oxides) are present at the free surface or subsurface. They act as stress raisers which can considerably reduce the crack incubation period depending on their size, shape and the microstructural features of the surrounding material. Internal casting defects are of special interest to this work. The application of safety coefficients considers that all casting defects present in a component have the same deleterious effect and no attention is paid, for example, to their distance to the free surface. In other words, internal defects (corresponding to the case where the depth of the defect allows crack nucleation and propagation to essentially occur without interaction with the air environment) are considered as damaging to fatigue life as surface defects (those placed at the free surface and in contact with the air environment). Surface crack monitoring performed on uniaxial fatigue specimens indicates that the presence of a surface microshrinkage exceeding the size of microstructurally small cracks (√A ≈ 500 μm, controlled by the SDAS) readily nucleates a fatigue cracks producing steady crack propagation and remarkable reduction in the expected fatigue life. A smaller surface defect (√A ≈ 300 μm) nucleated a crack that did not reduced the expected fatigue life as in this case early stages of propagation are still nfluenced by the SDAS. Pure torsional cycling reveals that the morphology of fracture surfaces is highly influenced by the stress level. In general, torsional fatigue behaviour is described by having reduced (with respect to uniaxial testing) and multisite crack nucleation periods. Several dominant cracks can evolve simultaneously and the final failure occurs by the linkage of some of those cracks. Crack propagation is controlled by the crystallography and pores do not appear to be preferential nucleation sites. S-N curves show that macroscopic specimens containing Øeq ≈ 2 mm internal artificial defect produce similar fatigue lives to those obtained with a defect-free material. Internal crack nucleation was rarely observed during synchrotron tomography experiments; instead the fatal cracks initiated from much smaller surface defects. Tomographic images show that, in the case of internal propagation, crystallographic paths are formed while surface cracks propagate in mode I. The crack growth rate of internal cracks is much smaller than that of cracks propagating from the free surface., L’excellente coulabilité, les coûts de production relativement bas, et ratio poids/résistance mécanique élevé des alliages de fonderie Al-Si-Mg en font une des solutions les plus intéressantes dans le secteur automobile ainsi que dans le domaine aérospatial. Toutefois, il est bien connu que la durée de vie de ces composants moulés à grand nombre de cycles (105 < Nf < 107 cycles) est sévèrement réduite lorsque des défauts de fonderie (notamment pores et oxydes) sont débouchants et/ou subsurfaciques sont présents. Ces défauts concentrent les contraintes et peuvent considérablement réduire la période d’amorçage des fissures de fatigue en fonction de leur taille, forme et des caractéristiques microstructurales du matériau. Les défauts internes (à partir desquels les fissures peuvent amorcer et propager sans interaction avec l’air ambiant) ainsi que les défauts de surface (ceux qui sont placés à la surface et en contact direct avec l’air ambiant) vont également nuire la durée de vie des composants moulés. Toutefois, dans le cas des défauts internes, les coefficients de sécurité préconisés par les règles de conception ne font pas intervenir la distance de défaut par rapport à la surface. Le suivi de fissures de fatigue effectué à la surface d’éprouvettes macroscopiques de traction indique que la présence d’un défaut avec une taille supérieure à celle des fissures microstructuralement courtes (√A ≈ 500 μm, taille contrôlée par la SDAS) produit une remarquable réduction de la durée vie. En revanche, la durée de vie n’est pas affectée lorsqu’un défaut plus petit (√A ≈ 300 μm) est présent à la surface car l’amorçage et les premiers stades de propagation sont encore influencés par la SDAS. Les essais de fatigue en torsion pure montrent que la morphologie des surfaces de rupture est fortement influencée par le niveau de contrainte. De plus, le nombre de cycles à l’amorçage est réduit par rapport à la traction. Cet amorçage est multi-site et plusieurs fissures peuvent croitre simultanément au cours de la durée de vie d’une éprouvette, la rupture finale se produisant lors de la jonction de certaines de ces fissures. La propagation des fissures en torsion est largement influencée par la cristallographie locale et les retassures ne semblent pas être des sites de nucléation préférentiels. Les durées de vie odes échantillons macroscopiques contenant défauts artificiel internes (Øeq ≈ 2 mm) sont pratiquement similaires à celles obtenues avec un matériau de référence. L’amorçage et la propagation de fissures internes a été rarement observé lors des expériences de tomographie synchrotron. Dans les rares cas où de telles fissures ont pu être observées, le chemin de fissuration semble fortement influencé par la cristallographie alors que les fissures amorcées depuis la surface se propagent globalement en mode I. La vitesse de propagation des fissures internes est très inférieure à celle des fissures se propageant à partir de la surface.

Steel structures are mainly prone to two types of degradation: corrosion and fatigue particularly in the case of welded structures. The presented work aims at investigating two treatment methods to increase the fatigue life expectancy of welded steel joints in civil engineering structures. It includes both numerical and experimental investigations and is interested in the use of grinding and shot peening. As far as experimental investigations are concerned, for both treatment methods and for untreated samples, the stress concentration coefficients are determined, surface residual stresses are measured using X-ray diffraction and fatigue tests are conducted. The results allow explaining for both methods the observed improvements in fatigue behaviour. As far as numerical investigations are concerned, the presented work concerns the use of a finite element model to simulate welding process. This allows the determination of residual stresses due to welding operation and their comparison with the former experimental measures. Results are satisfactory enough, and, though some improvements regarding the initial stress state and the modelling are still under progress, it should be used in a following study to model treatment operations to get a better understanding of their potentiality and the parameters that affect their efficiency.

High frequency mechanical impact is a recent improvement method which is probably one of the most effective for treating welded assemblies. A number of experimental results relating to this process are presented in this article. These results lead to better understand the mechanisms of the process, to outline the influence of the operating parameters and to confirm the role played by the initial quality of treated welds. In addition, a process is proposed in order to numerically estimate the fatigue life improvement reached after treatment. All these results were obtained in the scope of a study whose long-term aim is to propose an approach that can be industrially applicable for fatigue design of welded assemblies treated by high frequency mechanical impact.

This project aims to optimize the laser drilling process (process parameters, power, frequency, laser beam diameter) and to characterize the fatigue properties of a pierced specimen. This study will focus on fatigue crack initiation mechanisms. The test means used (furnace, hydraulic traction machine and power lasers) will be those of the center of Paris of ENSAM.

Les techniques innovantes d'hier sont devenues les techniques opérationnelles d'aujourd'hui, par suite de la mobilisation de tous les acteurs de la profession routière: " entreprises développant des produits et des moyens, issus de la recherche, " maîtres d'ouvrage et maîtres d'oeuvre instituant des dispositions pour évaluer et comparer l'intérêt de ces innovations (concours, charte, chantiers expérimentaux, ...), " laboratoires d'essai et de recherche disposant de moyens d'étude en semi-vraie grandeur tels que le manège de chaussées de Nantes permettant « l'accélération du temps », et par conséquent la validation des techniques. Cet article présente les résultats de synthèse des expérimentations concernant le développement des nouvelles couches de roulement, pour l'époque: les bétons bitumineux drainants (BBDr), les bétons bitumineux minces (BBM) et surtout très minces (BBTM), dont les formulations à fine granularité réduisent les nuisances sonores tout en améliorant les conditions d'adhérence. Les enrobés issus de différentes méthodes de formulation en laboratoire des enrobés de surface ont été soumis à l'épreuve du manège, pour comparer la pertinence de ces études. La durabilité sous trafic et dans le temps reste la question majeure des ingénieurs pour le choix des techniques, le manège constitue une réponse intéressante et pertinente, même pour les couches de surface.

One of most problematic in the aeronautical industries is the structural joining of the high performance thermoplastic composites like PEEK composites. Actually, a lot of technologies are used for joining thermoplastic composites like welding, bolting, riveting, fastening and adhesive bonding. Due to the various advantages that characterize the adhesive bonding method, such an uniform stress distribution along the joint, weight‐light and cost reduction, makes this technique more desirable to join thermoplastic composites materials compared to the other joining techniques. PEEK (PolyEtherEtherKetone) is a semi‐crystalline thermoplastic material with high performance. This material is wildly used in aeronautical industries, principally, reinforced with carbon of glass fibres. However, its high chemical resistance makes the adhesive bonding of PEEK and its composites difficult and therefore an appropriate and optimised surface treatment is necessary. In the aim to obtain a bonded system with high performance, scientific and technical problematic should be focussed on the junction between adherents. Indeed, the quality of this junction is of utmost importance because it must allow optimum transfer of thermomechanical stresses when the assembly is subject to its terms of use. Though, at this time it is well known that thermoplastic composite materials are difficult to bond with‐out surface treatment. This study, therefore, relates to the improvement of mechanical properties (monotonic and cyclic) of the adhesive bonding system PEEK / PEEK. In this context, a surface treatment, easy to implement, is proposed. This surface treatment is sandblasting, which enables surface topographic (morphological) modifications. Understanding of various phenomena of interfaces interaction involved in the improvement of the mechanical behavior of the adhesive joint and is part of the triptych "Rheology, Physico‐chemistry and topography" is the major scientific challenge in this thesis. Initially, the influence of processing parameters such as the projection time, the particle size on surface morphology of various materials based on PEEK was analysed, thus allowing establishing the correlation between morphological parameters and modification mechanisms involved during surface treatment surface. One of the key factors for understanding the mechanisms of interaction between the liquid adhesive and the solid substrate is wettability. The analysis of the wetting behavior as a function of various parameters of the treatment was performed. The wettability of treated surfaces is strongly affected by surface roughness created after this treatment. The relationship between morphological parameters and wettability was discussed. Finally, the influence of sandblasting processing parameters on the mechanical behavior in monotoning and long‐term (fatigue tests) of the adhesive joint strength was studied, using single lap shear tests specimens. This has led to the proposal of specific surface morphological parameters for the optimization of the mechanical behavior of the adhesive joint of PEEK and its composites.; L'assemblage des matériaux composites thermoplastiques tel que le PEEK est l'une des problématiques majeure de l'industrie aéronautique. Actuellement, différentes techniques sont développées pour assurer l'assemblage structural de ces matériaux, tels que : le soudage, le rivetage, le boulonnage et le collage. Les enjeux industriels majeurs sont principalement, à l'heure actuelle, la conception des structures simplifiées au maximum afin de réduire les coûts de production et la réduction des consommations énergétiques. A cet effet, l'industrie aéronautique fait fréquemment appel à l'assemblage par collage en raison de nombreux avantages qu'il offre (gain de poids, distribution régulière des contraintes, absence de trous) par rapport aux autres techniques existantes. Le PEEK (PolyEtherEtherKetone), est un matériau polymère semi-cristallin thermoplastique, à hautes performances. Ce matériau est souvent utilise dans l'industrie aéronautique principalement renforce par des fibres de carbone ou de verre. Cependant, du fait du niveau élevé de sa résistance chimique l'assemblage par collage du PEEK et de ses composites nécessitent des traitements de surfaces appropries et optimises. Or, afin d'obtenir un system collé à haute performance, la problématique scientifique et technique doit être concentrée sur la jonction entre les éléments à assembler. En effet, la qualité de cette jonction est de la plus haute importance car elle doit permettre un transfert optimal des contraintes thermomécaniques lorsque l'assemblage est soumis a ses conditions d'usage. Cette étude concerne donc, l'amélioration des propriétés mécaniques (monotones et cycliques) de l'assemblage par collage PEEK/PEEK. Dans cette optique, un traitement de surface simple de mise en œuvre est proposé. Ce traitement est le sablage, qui permet la modification topographique (morphologique) de surface. La compréhension des différents phénomènes d'interaction aux interfaces intervenant dans l'amélioration du comportement mécanique du joint de colle et qui s'inscrit dans la triptyque : " Rhéologie, Physico-chimie et topographie ", est l'enjeu scientifique majeur dans cette thèse. Dans un premier temps, l'influence des paramètres du traitement tels que le temps de projection, la taille des particules, sur la morphologie de surface de différents matériaux à base de PEEK a été analysée, permettant ainsi d'établir la corrélation entre les paramètres morphologiques et les mécanismes de modification topographique de surface intervenant pendant le traitement de surface. L'un des facteurs clefs pour la compréhension des mécanismes d'interaction entre l'adhésif liquide et le substrat solide est la mouillabilité. L'analyse du comportement au mouillage en fonction des différents paramètres du traitement a été réalisée. La mouillabilité des surfaces traitées est fortement affectée par la rugosité de surface créée après ce traitement. La relation entre les paramètres morphologiques et la mouillabilité a été discutée. Enfin, l'influence des paramètres du traitement par sablage sur le comportement mécanique monotone et à long terme (essais de fatigue) sur la résistance du joint colle a été étudié à l'aide d'essais de cisaillement sur éprouvettes à simple recouvrement. Ceci a conduit, à la proposition de paramètres morphologiques surfaciques spécifiques pour l'optimisation du comportement mécanique du joint de colle des matériaux composites à matrice PEEK.

L'augmentation de la charge autorisée à circuler sur les chaussées et la mise en place de l'éco-redevance poids lourds imposent de mieux quantifier l'effet des chargements complexes sur la durée de vie en fatigue des enrobés bitumineux. Des paramètres caractéristiques d'un signal de chargement ont été définis et déterminés pour des signaux réels mesurés au manège de fatigue du LCPC. Une analyse statistique en composantes principales a été menée dans le but de déterminer les corrélations entre les paramètres puis d'identifier les paramètres indépendants. Ces paramètres ont aussi été déterminés pour des signaux de laboratoire pour identifier le paramètre le plus influant sur la durée de vie en fatigue. Les plages de variation des paramètres retenus ont été identifiées pour la construction d'un plan d'expérience pour de futurs essais de fatigue de laboratoire.

Le projet ANR Orthoplus a pour objectif principal de mettre au point les outils théoriques et méthodologiques de prise en compte de l'épaisseur et de la nature du revêtement dans le calcul et la vérification en fatigue d'une dalle orthotrope. Les outils validés seront utilisés pour optimiser les revêtements bitumineux existants et développer une solution innovante de revêtement en Béton Fibré à Ultra-Hautes Performances (BFUP). Le présent rapport fournit les résultats expérimentaux correspondant au chargement du corps d'épreuve non revêtu, dont la tôle de platelage a une épaisseur de 14 mm, dans différentes configurations. L'analyse métrologique et la cohérence des séries de mesures sont également présentées.

In pavement engineering, fatigue resistance is evaluated using different tests protocols and different specimen geometries. The dependency of the specimen shape geometry on fatigue performance does not allow the evolution of intrinsic material properties. This paper deals with the calibration of intrinsic fatigue damage parameters for bituminous materials. A fatigue damage model is implemented. The decrease of stiffness of the specimen during fatigue tests for different laboratory testing conditions is calculated from finite element computations. An inverse optimization technique is used in order to adjust the fatigue damage parameters on bending fatigue tests. A Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm is implemented to fit the finite element specimen global response on experimental results. An application on bending laboratory fatigue tests is presented to illustrate the applicability of the method for pavement engineering.

Considering that most of time, cracks in bituminous mixes occur inside the binder/mastic film, it can be assumed that fatigue properties of the bitumen itself could give accurate information on the fatigue behaviour of mixes. It has been already demonstrated that a strong link exists between bitumen and mixe fatigue properties. From these previous studies, it is clear that when the same composition is used, mixes can be ranked as the corresponding binders. Whereas numerous studies have been conducted on shear fatigue properties using Dynamic shear Rheometer (DSR), only a few data obtained with other modes of loading are available. Knowing that mixes are tested in mode I crack opening, it seems interesting to test binders under the same fracture mode. For these reasons, the present study focuses on the design of a tension-compression fatigue test as well as the interpretation of the first results taking into account the rheological phenomena occurring during the test. The paper describes the design and the preparation of the diabolo shaped used samples. Fatigue test results from three binders are given and compared to the corresponding mixes results. Then, a particular attention is drawn on the phase angle versus stiffness (black diagram) during the fatigue experiments.

This paper presents the results of a round robin test (RRT) on binder fatigue, with data received from 11 participating laboratories. Most data were obtained with a Dynamic Shear Rheometer (DSR) equipment, one laboratory used a tension-compressiontest. In a first stage, the RRT consisted of three binders, two unmodified binders and onepolymer modified binder. These three binders had almost the same stiffness level at the testing conditions, 10°C and 10 Hz. Fatigue tests were conducted at three strain levels, and each strain level was measured in three repeats. For each test it was asked to follow the small strain stiffness during an equilibration time of 30 minutes. A second stage of this RRT including two more binders is foreseen. The same three binders were also tested in two and in four point bending mix fatigue tests. The analysis was separated into two parts, in a first part the repeatability and reproducibility of the small strain equilibrium stiffness was evaluated and in a second part the fatigue data were analyzed. Small strain stiffness data showed that the repeatability and reproducibility of G* is still not very high, and possible reasons are under evaluation. The analysis of the fatigue data showed that the overall reproducibility was not good. But when all participants that did in some way not follow the preparation procedure or that had problems with recording, were excluded, it was found that for 6 of the participating laboratories the fatigue properties gave good repeatability and reproducibility levels, for the two unmodified binders in this study. Each laboratory could distinguish the better fatigue life of the polymer modified binder compared to the unmodified binders as was also confirmed by mixture tests. This shows that the binder behavior plays an important role in the fatigue behavior of the mix, and that a binder test should be able to evaluate this role. The binder fatigue test can be used as a surrogate test for mixture fatigue, implying considerable time savings in sample preparation, however the testing of the binders is still time consuming.

In the framework of LCPC fatigue carrousel studies [Corté and others, 1994; Gramsammer and others, 1994], rutting measurements on several mixes have been carried out. For each mix, the granular distribution has been identical, but different types of bitumen have been chosen : classical bitumen 50/70, EVA modified bitumen and SBS modified bitumen. These mixes have been designed by a previous laboratory tests campaign. In comparing field and laboratory results, a different behaviour is observed on asphalts treated by EVA modified bitumen and SBS modified bitumen. The analysis of the laboratory rutting tests, carried out with the French wheel tracking device (FWTD), show overheating of the slabs and sticking is observed between the slab surface and the tyre during the test. These phenomena have induced a sudden increasing of the rutting after 300 or 3000 cycles. In order to obtain the in-situ behaviour at laboratory scale, a special procedure has been worked out to prevent these phenomena. The article shows the obtained results with this special procedure on two mixes and compares them with the tests results with the classic procedure and results of the fatigue carrousel study.

6th RILEM International conference on cracking in pavements, CHICAGO, ETATS-UNIS, 16-/06/2008 - 18/06/2008; International audience; This paper focuses on an experimental mechanical study of the bond fatigue life of composite (concrete over asphalt) pavements. This in-situ experiments is based on the use of an accelerated pavements testing facility (FABAC fatigue device). With the support of the French cement industry, a pavement section similar to an Ultra Thin White-topping structure has been realized at the LCPC-Nantes Center. Vertical joints of plain concrete have been loaded up to one million cycles. A non destructive seismic method, COLIBRI device, has been used to follow the interface debounding. Combined with core observations, it is possible to propose the accelerated fatigue damage scenario of such a composite pavement. The bond as well as the layers has been damaged by fatigue. These damages depend on temperature conditions wheel positions and interface treatments. Specific modeling and laboratory fatigue tests are proposed to be developed to deepen the knowledge of these deteriorations.

The research work presented in this PhD thesis lies within the framework of a partnership between the laboratory Mechanics and Modeling of Materials and Structures in Civil Engineering (3MSCE, University of Limoges) and Eurovia, a subsidiary of the VINCI Group. The study aims at better understanding the mechanistic behavior of tack coats spread at the interface between two asphalt concrete (AC) layers. This behavior is characterized through a large experimental campaign. Then, the tests results are used in a finite element program. This program allows the pavement structure engineer to predict, on the one hand, the durability of the bonding at the interface, and on the other hand, the effect of modeling the interface behavior on the pavement response. In this research project, a laboratory double shear test device is designed and manufactured. By means of a mono-axis hydraulic press, the device allows applying a double shear loading at the interfaces of a symmetrical specimen which is consisted of three AC layers. Thus, monotonic, oligocyclic and fatigue tests are carried out at 10 and 20°C on an interface BBTM/BBSG (very thin AC layer overlaid on a dense AC layer). This interface is with or without tack coat (a cationic rapid-set emulsion with pure bitumen). The oligocyclic and fatigue tests were carried out in a force controlled mode, and lead to very innovative and interesting results. Three failure criteria are analyzed. The results clearly show that the lack of tack coat reduces the fatigue performance of the bonding (interface). Through the analysis of the results, a method is proposed, and allows predicting the fatigue law of the bonding from the monotonic shear tests results. This shear tests campaign is completed by a series of laboratory monotonic torque tests. Besides the characterization of the tack coats shear behavior, the experimental conditions where the torque and the double shear tests results are similar are specified. The last part of this work deals with, on the one hand, the effect of the interface shear behavior on the pavement structure design, and on the other hand, the effect of the repeated horizontal loads on the fatigue of the bonding at the interface. Two finite element models (2D and 3D) are developed in order to evaluate the mechanistic response of the pavement subjected to the French standard axle. Findings from this numerical simulation show that, when taking into account the horizontal loads, the fatigue of the bonding becomes predominant during the pavement structure design., Cette thèse s'inscrit dans le cadre d'une collaboration entre le laboratoire Mécanique et Modélisation des Matériaux et Structures du Génie Civil (3MsGC) de l'Université de Limoges, et Eurovia, une société du groupe VINCI. Les travaux réalisés dans cette thèse visent à une meilleure connaissance du comportement mécanique des couches d'accrochages mises en oeuvre à l'interface de deux couches d'enrobés bitumineux. Afin de caractériser ce comportement, un large travail expérimental a été réalisé. Les résultats de cette campagne d'essais ont permis d'alimenter le modèle éléments finis développé dans le but de prédire la durabilité du collage à l'interface des couches de chaussée. Ce modèle permet également d'étudier l'effet de la modélisation ou non du comportement de l'interface sur le dimensionnement de la chaussée. Afin de mener à bien la campagne expérimentale de ce travail, un prototype de dispositif d'essai a été conçu et réalisé. Au moyen d'une presse servohydraulique mono-axe, le dispositif permet d'appliquer une sollicitation de double cisaillement aux interfaces d'une éprouvette symétrique constituée de trois couches d'enrobés bitumineux. Ainsi, des essais monotones, oligocycliques et de fatigue ont été réalisés à 10 et à 20°C sur une interface BBTM/BBSG, comportant ou non une couche d'accrochage à base de bitume pur. Les essais oligocycliques et de fatigue, réalisés en mode de contrôle de force, ont permis d'obtenir des résultats très satisfaisants, et très peu dispersés. Trois critères de rupture d'interface ont été analysés. Les résultats obtenus montrent que l'absence de couche d'accrochage réduit considérablement la performance à la fatigue du collage à l'interface. Les résultats d'essais ont également permis de proposer une méthode qui permet de prédire la loi de fatigue du collage à partir des résultats d'essais monotones de cisaillement. Cette campagne d'essais de cisaillement est complétée par une série d'essais monotones de torsion. Outre la caractérisation du comportement mécanique des couches d'accrochage, les résultats ont permis de déterminer les conditions expérimentales dans lesquelles les essais en laboratoire de cisaillement et de torsion sont corrélables. L'essai monotone de torsion présente l'avantage d'être réalisable sur chantier. Une dernière partie de ce travail est consacrée à l'analyse de l'influence, d'une part, du comportement mécanique du collage à l'interface lors du dimensionnement de la structure de chaussée, et d'autre part, des sollicitations tangentielles répétées sur la tenue à la fatigue du collage à l'interface. Deux modèles éléments finis (2D et 3D) sont développés pour étudier la réponse mécanique de la structure sollicitée par l'essieu standard français. Les résultats obtenus montrent que sur certaines sections de chaussée, la prise en compte des sollicitations tangentielles conduit à considérer la fatigue des interfaces comme prédominante lors du dimensionnement.

A five-point bending under negative moment test makes it possible to characterize the best bituminous mix. A thermomechanical modeling from finite elements software (COMSOL) is proposed. Bituminous concrete viscoelasticity and the dissipation of heat during the tests are taking account. That is why, tests on cylindrical specimens were done to obtain important mechanical and thermal bituminous concrete charateristics, which are rare in scientific literature. A third assumption based on damage theory is essential to obtain correct results near from tests., Un essai de fatigue, appelé également essai de flexion sous moment négatif permet de caractériser la formulation la plus appropriée. Une modélisation thermomécanique du système est développée à partir d'un logiciel aux éléments finis (COMSOL). Elle tient compte de la viscosité des matériaux bitumineux et de l'échauffement thermique crée par les cycles mécaniques de fatigue. Pour cela, des essais précis sur éprouvettes cylindriques ont été réalisés pour déterminer des grandeurs mécaniques et thermiques caractéristiques des enrobés bitumineux qui sont rares dans la littérature scientifique. Une troisième hypothèse s'appuyant sur la théorie de l'endommagement est abordée en conclusion et s'avère indispensable pour obtenir les résultats proches des expériences.

The paper deals with the assessment of wear of road surfaces subjected to traffic. Full-scale tests were performed by means of LCPC Carousel facilities to simulate passages of truck tires under pure cornering maneuver. Three types of road surface were tested. Up to 800 000 passages were performed and measurements of tire and road characteristics were carried out at different wear stages. Results were presented in term of evolution of skid resistance as well as macro- and microtexture of road surfaces. Tire wear was simply assessed by tire groove depth evolution. Discussion was focused on the relationship between evolutions of road surface microtexture and tire groove depths to assess road aggressiveness vis-à-vis tire wear. The study is part of European TROWS project that the main objective is to derive experimental and numerical tools to predict tire and road wear.
