Ce document présente une étude exploratoire sur l’origine sociale des membres du corps estudiantin de l’EPFL en se basant sur le niveau de formation de leurs parents. L’évolution de la mixité sociale à chaque étape du parcours de formation (de la fin de l’école obligatoire aux études tertiaires) est présentée. Une comparaison avec d’autres hautes écoles suisses et pays voisins est faite quand cela se justifie. L’analyse se base essentiellement sur des données de l’Office fédéral de la statistique (OFS). D’une part, nous utilisons les données des enquêtes sur la situation sociale et économique des étudiantes et des étudiants (SSEE). Elles sont complétées par des données des analyses longitudinales dans le domaine de la formation (LABB).

Graphical abstract, The shoot apical meristem (SAM) is the primary stem cell niche in plant shoots. Stem cells in the SAM are controlled by an intricate regulatory network, including negative feedback between WUSCHEL (WUS) and CLAVATA3 (CLV3). Recently, we identified a group of signals, Epidermal Patterning Factor-Like (EPFL) proteins, that are produced at the peripheral region and are important for SAM homeostasis. Here, we present a mathematical model for the SAM regulatory network. The model revealed that the SAM uses EPFL and signals such as HAIRY MERISTEM from the middle in a synergistic manner to constrain both WUS and CLV3. We found that interconnected negative and positive feedbacks between WUS and CLV3 ensure stable WUS expression in the SAM when facing perturbations, and the positive feedback loop also maintains distinct cell populations containing WUSon and CLV3on cells in the apical-basal direction. Furthermore, systematic perturbations of the parameters revealed a tradeoff between optimizations of multiple patterning features. Our results provide a holistic view of the regulation of SAM patterning in multiple dimensions. They give insights into how Arabidopsis integrates signals from lateral and apical-basal axes to control the SAM patterning, and they shed light into design principles that may be widely useful for understanding regulatory networks of stem cell niche.

A research activity in the Institute for Plasma Science and Technology of National Research Council (ISTP-CNR, Italy, former IFP-CNR) and in L.T. Calcoli (LTC, Italy) is aimed at the design and construction of calorimetric loads for absorption and measurement of high power millimeter-waves in the electron cyclotron frequency range. Recently, two CW 170 GHz loads, one for the European ITER gyrotron test facility and the other for the FALCON test- bed, have been installed at the Swiss Plasma Center (SPC, Switzerland). One short pulse (2 s) load for 1 MW, designed and optimised to operate at two different frequencies (84 GHz and 126 GHz), was provided for testing and conditioning two new dual-frequency gyrotrons for the Tokamak a Configuration Variable (TCV, Switzerland). Two additional CW loads, designed for absorbing powers higher than 1 MW, have been delivered to the National Institutes for Quantum and Radiological Science and Technology (QST, Japan) and exploited for the acceptance tests and the conditioning of the prototype of the Japanese ITER gyrotron. The present status and the most recent experimental results achieved in the framework of this development activity are reported in the paper.

Plant cells communicate with each other using a variety of signaling molecules. Recent studies have revealed that various types of secreted peptides, as well as phytohormones known since long ago, mediate cell-cell communication in diverse contexts of plant life. These peptides affect cellular activities, such as proliferation and cell fate decisions, through their perception by cell surface receptors located on the plasma membrane of target cells. ERECTA (ER), an Arabidopsis thaliana receptor kinase gene, was first identified as a stem growth regulator, and since then an increasing number of studies have shown that ER is involved in a wide range of developmental and physiological processes. In particular, molecular functions of ER have been extensively studied in stomatal patterning. Furthermore, the importance of ER signaling in vascular tissues of inflorescence stems, especially in phloem cells, has recently been highlighted. In this review article, first we briefly summarize the history of ER research including studies on stomatal development, then introduce ER functions in vascular tissues, and discuss its interactions with phytohormones and other receptor kinase signaling pathways. Future questions and challenges will also be addressed.

AI is a dual-use technology that can be used for both civilian and military purposes or alternatively with good or bad intentions. Tech giants are in a precarious position where their technology is being used more and more for military purposes, against the values of users and employees. Responsibility grows on all sides, behavioral alternatives become more and more complex. Anxiety and feeling overwhelmed lead to lethargy and paralysis within the affected people and make communication and motivation for action more difficult. 2019 will be the year of (AI) enlightenment, which will produce fact-based statements and clearer definitional demarcations. The focus will be on ethics, privacy, security, open science, interdisciplinarity, internationality and narrowly defined, practical applications. The role of privacy and security, and their demarcation criteria in the context of AI will become clearer. An AI and Ethics Showdown will clarify what is needed and what is feasible and debunk sanctimonious good AI. Open Source (& Science) AI and interdisciplinary collaboration will increase significantly. In 2011, the EPFL Library conducted real-life parallel tests of four major providers of so-called "resource discovery services": Summon, EBSCO Discovery Service, Primo Central Total Care and Worldcat Local. The aim was to replace the Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC) currently in use at the EPFL Library and shared with all libraries of the NEBIS network. The Swiss meta-catalog Swissbib and Google Scholar were used as reference. The above products were tested against the following basic requirements: simultaneous search through multiple data sources, global search index instead of federated searches and hosted instead of local installation. Choosing the best tool depends greatly on the local context. This report aims to expose the strengths and weaknesses of the current offering in discovery tools, and what they would mean for the EPFL Library. It is therefore not meant as a definitive judgment on the merits of each tool but rather as an illustration of the issues raised while adapting such tools to an institution such as EPFL.

Part of a synthetic book from AUPELF UREF on operational applications of remote sensing. This chapter presents the links between remote sensing and hydrology as a comparison between required data for hydrological purposes and produced data by remote sensing techniques. In a first part, are defined the various elementary hydrological processes of runoff, in order to discuss the link with morphology and surface features. Then conditions, limits and interest of hydrological modelling are discussed, in link with a spatial approach. In an other part are given some examples of uses of remote sensing in hydrology. The originality of this paper is to start from an hydrological point of view to define the possibilities of remote sensing, without focusing on spatial tools., Ce chapitre est extrait d'un ouvrage de synthèse de l'AUPELF UREF portant sur les applications opérationnelles de la télédétection. Ce chapitre fait le point sur l'utilisation de la télédétection pour l'hydrologie. Le lien entre l'hydrologie et la télédétection est perçu comme une mise en parallèle des paramètres spatiaux obtenus par l'application des techniques de télédétection et de ceux requis par une démarche hydrologique. En un premier temps sont rapidement rappelés les processus élémentaires des écoulements des eaux dans un bassin versant de façon à mieux cerner les paramètres hydrologiques nécessaires ainsi que leur liaison avec les paramètres spatiaux (de morphologie et d'états de surface). Puis sont évoquées les conditions d'une modélisation hydrologique globale ou distribuée, ses limites et ses attentes en regard de données issues de télédétection. Enfin une série de cas précis permet d'illustrer ces applications de la télédétection dans le domaine de l'hydrologie. Ce document a la particularité de partir essentiellement du cadre de la modélisation hydrologique pour définir en quoi la télédétection peut lui être utile, en évitant une focalisation sur l'outil et ses performances.

La Bibliothèque de l'EPFL réfléchit à la problématique du signalement des livres électroniques depuis 2005, lorsqu'un catalogue ad-hoc est créé pour pallier aux difficultés d'insérer ces ouvrages dans le catalogue collectif NEBIS. Cette solution permet de cataloguer facilement les e-books, mais impose à l'utilisateur d'interroger plusieurs catalogues. Une solution avec un champ de recherche unique est donc préférable. Les outils de type "ressource discovery tools" pourraient permettre la mise en place d'une telle recherche unifiée. Cette présentation revient sur l'expérience de la bibliothèque de l'EPFL dans sa recherche d'une telle solution.

Conçu par le bureau d’architecture japonais SANAA, le Rolex Learning Center est le nouveau bâtiment phare du campus de l’EPFL. Inauguré le 22 février 2010, il abrite sur ses 15'000 m2: la Bibliothèque de l’EPFL, ses collections, bureaux et surtout 900 places de travail pour les étudiants (zone silence, zone calme et bulles de travail en groupe), des services (restaurants, banque, librairie), une salle de spectacles, un éditeur, un laboratoire de recherche sur les technologies appliquées à la formation, des associations d'étudiants... Le bâtiment et ses services sont ouverts 7/7 jours, de 7h à 24h. Tout est pensé pour répondre aux besoins de l'utilisateur d'une "bibliothèque" au sens large: lieu de vie, lieu de travail, lieu d'interaction. Cette présentation évoque les étapes du projet RLC, son contexte dans l'histoire du campus et l'évolution de l'enseignement, ainsi que les services proposés par la nouvelle Bibliothèque de l'EPFL.

Dans le sillage de la problèmatique de l'élimination des CFC, il existe une tendance accrue à l'utilisation de réfrigérants naturels dans les systèmes de pompe à chaleur. L'ammoniac connaît dans ce contexte un net regain d'intérêt. La centrale de chauffe de l'EPFL, qui comprend notamment deux pompes à chaleur à ammoniac de 3.9 MWh dont une est complètement instrumentée, présente toujours un caractère pilote susceptible d'intéresser la communauté technique internationale.

Au sein de l'Ouest lausannois, l'EPFL figure comme une enclave qui se déconnecte entièrement de ses alentours. ; Elle privilégie aujourd'hui des “constructions-images” aux dépens de ses espaces extérieurs. Revaloriser ceux-ci s'avère pourtant capital pour pallier l'absence de porosité du campus au sein de son territoire, et mettre l'accent sur des lieux d'échange, de rencontre et de détente, indispensables à un campus universitaire. Au travers d'une série de micro-interventions, réalisables dans de courts délais et sans grands moyens, le projet cherche à mettre en avant la capacité des usagers à contribuer progressivement à la transformation de leur environnement. Mises en réseau sous la forme de promenades, ces propositions sont destinées à mettre en lumière les qualités de lieux ciblés, ainsi que des connexions existantes insoupçonnées. Sous la forme de légers dispositifs spatiaux et d'aménagements délicats, les micro-interventions favorisent l'appropriation des lieux, l'expérimentation et le développement de nouveaux usages. En intensifiant l'usage des espaces extérieurs existants, les micro-interventions permettent de révéler un potentiel jusqu'ici ignoré. Elles préfigurent des situations futures et visent à entraîner des interventions plus radicales, motivées par un besoin réel exprimé par les usagers. Ce jusqu'à changer complètement l'aspect des espaces extérieurs de l'EPFL et par conséquent, le regard qu'on leur porte.

The design process is a series of endeavors aimed to solve a problem, which is extensively defined as a need, a task, a situation, etc. Visualizations are objects that result from a design process that solves a problem of unreadable data. They are technical mediators that transform data in graphics through a precise authorship that defines their social and political context. One way to understand visualizations is to analyze the process of design: this approach, applied to a case study called Affinity Map, unveils the complexity of an object and reveals the reasons of its creation.

This article discusses the forecasting of load for a period varying from an hour to a week. As usual for the modelling and prediction of nonlinear processes, the use of artificial neural nets appears very promising. In the project described, measured loads for the past seven days, those for the two preceding days, maxima and minima of average temperatures of the previous day, and predicted day temperatures were used as input values, with the day of the week and day of the year as indicators. The load and temperature are modelled separately. An automated method is used for online testing

The Affinity Map is a project founded by the ENAC whose aim is to provide an instrument to understand organizations. The photograph shows the disclosure of the first map for the ENAC Research Day. The visualization was presented to scholars who are displayed in the representation itself.

In industrialized countries, more than two-thirds of the energy is consumed in urban areas. Hence, energy sobriety calls for special attention to urban planning, especially regarding energy aspects.

La Bibliothèque de l’EPFL a conduit une observation de l’utilisation des espaces du Rolex Learning Center (RLC) selon le mode « Seating sweeps », du 6 au 12 novembre 2017 (semaine de fréquentation moyenne). Cette étude s’inscrit dans une réflexion globale sur le bâtiment, visant à formuler des propositions de réaménagement. Malgré les possibles biais liés au jugement des sondeurs, la Bibliothèque a retenu cette méthode d’observation, car elle offre l’avantage de ne pas déranger les usagers. Les objectifs de cette observation étaient multiples : il s’agissait de savoir qui fréquente le RLC et selon quelles modalités (seul ou en groupe), de voir comment ces usagers investissent les divers espaces, de connaître leurs activités et le support des ressources qu’ils utilisent. Cette enquête a montré que le RLC est fréquenté principalement par des étudiants venant seuls. Ils représentent 94% de la population observée. Ils sont vus principalement en train d’étudier (80% des cas), ou occupés par des loisirs ou des activités, telles que manger ou dormir (20%). Les activitésd’étudesontprincipalementobservéesdansl’enceintedelabibliothèque, les bulles, les tables des zones silence et de l’ex-restaurant Hodler, tandis que les autres activités se concentrent dans les espaces informels ou de restauration. L’étude montre le RLC essentiellement comme un lieu d’études, que l’on fréquente à titre individuel , mais ne permet pas de savoir s’il s’agit d’un choix ou d’un non-choix, le RLC se prêtant mal au travail de groupe: la configuration actuelle des espaces limite très fortement les opportunités de travail à plusieurs. Le taux moyen d’utilisation du bâtiment entier sur cette semaine moyenne est de 50%. Il a été observé que les effets personnels peuvent occuper jusqu’à 30% de places ( et ce particulièrement à l a bibliothèque). En incluant les sièges occupés par des affaires (veste, sac, etc.), le taux moyen d’occupation du bâtiment atteint 60%. L’étude a permis de mieux cerner ce phénomène problématique, qui donne l’impression d’un bâtiment « plein », source de récriminations des usagers, surtout en période haute de fréquentation. L’observation a mis en évidence le contraste entre des zones densément occupées et d’autres quasiment vides (de façon constante ou selon les heures de la journée). Elle souligne aussi les préférences des usagers pour certains mobiliers (tables vs canapés et poufs) ou configurations : certains préfèrent les endroits isolés et silencieux, alors que d’autres choisissent de s’installer dans des zones informelles ou de passage. La Bibliothèque esquisse quelques recommandations comme le choix de tables carrées ou rectangulaires pour limiter les places non occupées, l’installation de séparateurs sur tables pour délimiter plus formellement les places de travail, et la création de nouveaux espaces dédiés aux travaux de groupe.
