Research.f i is a national service for collecting, integrating and disseminating information on research conducted in Finland. This includes information on publications and related research outputs (including in the arts), datasets, funding decisions and research infrastructures. Many other countries and regions also work on the development of CRISes. Sometimes features are developed before there is enough data to take full advantage of them. Sometimes you just wait for a critical mass of data to be available before starting as feature development. In this case it is a question of information on the various connections between different research objects. Research.f i has been somewhere in between, with 4 years since its initial release waiting for relationship data to come. You build it, and the data will come - has been a long wait. But PIDGraph to the rescue! This paper describes to piloting of PIDGraph scientific knowledge graph data in research.f i - to fill in the missing links. The PIDGraph is a collection of metadata about research objects, authors, publishers, institutions, and other research related items, all identified by persistent identifiers, and a series of systems to expose that metadata and make it available for analysis and integration with other systems. Research.fi is a national service for collecting, integrating and disseminating information on research conducted in Finland. This includes information on publications and related research outputs (including in the arts), datasets, funding decisions and research infrastructures. It has a specific section for researcher profiles, focusing on researcher descriptions, their research activities, merits, education - moving towards an affiliation-independent research CV. The plan is that within the Research.fi service, projects will become entities that bind different research objects together, even when funded from multiple sources and involving various researchers and organizations that may change over time. This concept of a project is aligned with the definition of a project in RAiD – the Research Activity Identifier. The RAiD service, developed originally by the Australian Research Data Commons, is being rolled out and adapted to the European context. RAiD provides a persistent and globally unique identifier that resolves in a browser to standardized information about a particular research project. Minting persistent identifiers (PIDs) for research projects facilitates the management of information about related participants, organizations, resources, and outputs. RAiD does so primarily by collecting other PIDs (where possible) representing project components, plus descriptive information about the project, storing it all in a metadata record associated with the identifier. University of Zagreb, University Computing Centre – SRCE is actively advancing open science and providing crucial support to the scientific community in Croatia. Through Croatian Scientific and Educational Cloud (HR-ZOO) [ 11 ], SRCE provides a wide range of advanced computing and cloud services, alongside data services designed to simplify research data management across all stages of the research process. In the meantime, a national CRIS (CroRIS) [ 12 ] was created and put into production, consisting of a variety of interconnected modules. We compare the FDO approach with established Linked Data practices and the existing Web architecture, and provide a brief history of the Semantic Web while discussing why these technologies may have been difficult to adopt for FDO purposes. Purpose The purpose of the ESCAPE Open-source Software and Service Repository (OSSR) is to provide a central location for the dissemination and use of trusted open-source software in the fields of astronomy, astroparticle physics, and particle physics. The repository allows users to easily access and download tools and services developed within the community, and to contribute their own tools and services. Methods The ESCAPE project has set up a curated repository of software that provides tools and an environment to make it easy for users to find and download the software and services that they need. The repository is regularly updated and is maintained by a curation board, ensuring that the software and services are reliable and up-to-date. The curation and onboarding process makes the OSSR a trustworthy source of software that can be used for scientific analysis. The software included in the repository must include documentation and instructions and follow a set of modern best practices in software development. Training is provided to students and researchers to help them provide high-quality scientific software following modern software development practices. Outcome The OSSR currently contains a wide range of software and services, including those for data management, data analysis, and machine learning. These tools and services are used by researchers and other users around the world. The OSSR has proven to be an effective means for disseminating and providing open-source software and services developed by the ESCAPE project partners and welcomes contributions from the entire community.

The Environmental Research Infrastructure (ENVRI) community is a cluster of European research infrastructures focused on the environment and Earth system science. The ENVRI-FAIR project aims to advance the FAIRness of their data and services with emphasis on interoperability and connect the ENVRI community to the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC). In this article, we present a proposal for a science project that will develop and launch a dashboard for environmental indicators as a contribution from the ENVRI cluster to the EOSC platform. The dashboard will provide easy access to environmental data and services from multiple research infrastructures and disciplines and support interdisciplinary Earth system science and societal challenges. The proposal describes the objectives, implementation, impact, and dissemination measures of the project, as well as the partners involved and the target groups that can benefit from the dashboard service. We explain how the dashboard will showcase the usefulness and relevance of the observations provided by the research infrastructures, and how it will engage a larger community of researchers and potential data providers in co-creation processes. We also discuss how the dashboard will make use of existing and new EOSC services and resources, and how it will contribute to several EU initiatives and directives related to the environment and climate change. Urgency of the research. The European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) is an environment for hosting and processing research data to support EU science. EOSC aims to provide European researchers and citizens with a unified and open multidisciplinary environment where they can publish, discover and reuse open data, tools and services for research, innovation and education. Target setting. Such powerful tools used by the scientific community can be used in all areas of education. In schools, the use of open science services will primarily be during the study of specialized subjects, in the process of performing laboratory work or during the preparation of student works for participation in competitions of the Small Academy of Sciences. Actual scientific researches and issues analysis. In her research, V.V. Kovalenko studied the features of using cloud-oriented services of open science during training and professional development of teachers. S. G. Lytvynova investigated the use of tools and services of cloud-based systems for the professional development of lyceum teachers. Separate EOSC services were previously considered. The presented recommendations for the high-quality and effective implementation of open science tools and services were taken as a basis for developing the methodology. The research objective. To develop the components of the methodology for using the European Open Science Cloud in the process of teaching and professional development of teachers and to establish the relationships between these components. The statement of basic materials. The structure of the methodology for using the European Open Science Cloud in the process of teaching and professional development of teachers consists of the following components: target (goal, target group), content, technological (methods, forms and means of training) and effective. An approximate plan of training sessions is given. The main steps of conducting the master class “Organization of training using European Open Science Cloud” are described. Conclusions. The content component of the methodology is designed in such a way as to introduce advanced training trainees to the basic structure of EOSC, general principles of work on the portal and categories of services. Registration on the EOSC portal is somewhat simplified and there is the possibility of authorization through the accounts of other services and systems. The proposed methodology was tested during seminars, master classes and trainings. This case study focuses on the online training activities on Open Science delivered within the H2020 project Transforming Research through Innovative Practices for Linked Interdisciplinary Exploration (TRIPLE, Grant Agreement 863420). The project is dedicated to building a discovery platform for the Social Sciences and Humanities (SSH) and is committed to promoting and supporting the uptake of Open Science within research practices. In order to address SSH research and training communities’ needs for enhanced competencies on Open Science and for stronger support in the Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable (FAIR) management of digital training materials, two reusable outputs were produced. The work carried out is presented as a novel approach to tackle the issues related to FAIRifying research and training practices and to create training resources whose reusability and relevance reaches beyond the project lifetime and framework. The case study presents the methods by which the results were produced so as to encourage and enable their future adaptation and reuse. The TRIPLE Open Science training series (result 1) targets SSH researchers, research support personnel and infrastructure developers in need of practical tools and specific skills to integrate Open Science practices in their workflows. The training series provides 12 competence-oriented online training events in Open Access whose training materials are available as Open Educational Resources (OER). The TRIPLE Training Toolkit (result 2) targets training organisers and research performing organisations who wish to design and manage training events as OERs and increase the impact of their training following good practice. The Toolkit is an easily reproducible workflow designed to help trainers minimise the time they spend in managing training events following FAIR practice. The workflow follows a FAIR-by-design method to address the frequent findability and reusability issues related to the management of digital training resources.

Il Sistema delle biblioteche depositarie delle Nazioni Unite è da alcuni anni attivo nella condivisione di documenti, materiali e buone pratiche, anche grazie ai progetti di digitalizzazione portati avanti dalle due biblioteche presenti presso il quartier generale delle Nazioni Unite a New York e l’Ufficio delle Nazioni Unite di Ginevra. Queste hanno di fatto anticipato ed accompagnato il processo di affermazione della scienza aperta e delle pratiche di scienza aperta a livello mondiale.

Lack of reproducibility of research results has become a major theme in recent years. As we emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic, economic pressures and exposed consequences of lack of societal trust in science make addressing reproducibility of urgent importance. TIER2 is a new international project funded by the European Commission under their Horizon Europe programme. Covering three broad research areas (social, life and computer sciences) and two cross-disciplinary stakeholder groups (research publishers and funders) to systematically investigate reproducibility across contexts, TIER2 will significantly boost knowledge on reproducibility, create tools, engage communities, implement interventions and policy across different contexts to increase re-use and overall quality of research results in the European Research Area and global R&I, and consequently increase trust, integrity and efficiency in research. The paper gives an overview on the Bulgarian participation in the einfrastructure part of the NI4OS-Europe project, funded by EC through H2020 program. NI4OS-Europe team has identified a set of necessary services and the corresponding policies that resources have to produce and publish, clearly stating to the users the ways these resources could be used, as well as the actions that are not allowed. By offering service providers a clear procedure for onboarding, NI4OS-Europe project partners are able to on-board more services with pan-European significance. Here we briefly present some of the services developed by the Bulgarian team.

This paper presents the interdisciplinary work undertaken by six photon and neutron research institutes to develop a common approach and implementation to data management plans in the context of the Photon and Neutron Open Science Cloud project. The paper introduces the context of the project and then describes the approach based on the concept of active data management plans and a common template of questions. The comparison of and choice of a common tool, the Data Stewardship Wizard, is then described. Finally, the deployment of the tool and its integration in the different facilities’ data workflows is described in more detail. The paper concludes with a summary of the achievements, the lessons learned, and which issues still need to be addressed.

Paolo Budroni ist seit 1991 im universitären Bereich tätig. Zunächst beantwortet er Fragen über seinen beruflichen Zugang zu den Themen Forschungsdokumentation und Forschungsdatenmanagement. Angesprochen werden auch nationale und internationale Projekte und Initiativen zum Forschungsdatenmanagement, wobei der Fokus auf der Darstellung der European Open Science Cloud liegt. Zuletzt richtet Budroni einen Appell an die Bibliotheken, sich verstärkt in die Umsetzung des Konzeptes von Open Science einzubringen.

National Initiatives for Open Science in Europe (NI4OS-Europe) is a Horizon 2020 project related to the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC). One of the project objectives is promoting EOSC and open science in 15 Central and East European EU states and EU-associated countries. This paper describes the variety of promoting activities carried out in Hungary as part of the NI4OS-Europe project by the Governmental Agency for IT Development (KIFÜ). Identifying good practices will give us the chance to find the best communication channels and methods to promote open science and to manage expectations of funders, researchers and librarians. The audience diversity of organized NI4OS events was analyzed in this study. The anonymized dataset based on registration forms was filtered by profession. Results suggest that events are generally visited by more librarians than researchers. The only exception is the third forum where the main Hungarian research fund as co-organizer might have attracted researchers’ attention. This suggests that librarians are considered to be in charge of open science issues in general. Usage data of the open science news feed were also studied. The 130 posts between May 2021 and April 2022 and 2500 visitors until the end of June 2022 give us the chance to learn about the characteristics of the most visited posts. We can conclude that the focus of communication is on open and FAIR data management, while other areas receive less attention. The results show that despite more international posts being published, the target group is more interested in local information.

Bericht vom letzten “EOSCpilot Stakeholders Forum”, 21. und 22. November 2018 im Austria Center in Wien. Einen Tag vor dem Launch der “European Open Science Cloud” (EOSC) unter österreichischer EU-Ratspräsidentschaft wurde hier vorgestellt, wie weit die Initiativen zur Implementierung dieses ambitionierten Projekts schon gekommen sind. Präsentationen zu Governance und technischer Umsetzung wechselten mit Diskussionen über noch ungeklärte oder unfertige Themen ab und gaben einen Vorgeschmack darauf, wie die ab jetzt “Stakeholders Forum” genannte Veranstaltung zukünftig über die Weiterentwicklung der EOSC mitbestimmen wird.

Am 23. November 2018 wurde im Rahmen der österreichischen EU-Ratspräsidentschaft die erste Version des Internet-Portals der „European Open Science Cloud“ (EOSC) an der Universität Wien präsentiert. Vertreterinnen und Vertreter aus Politik, Wissenschaft und Forschungsförderung sowie der Europäischen Kommission sprachen über Konzept und Bedeutung der EOSC und stellten an konkreten Beispielen deren Potential vor. Im Rahmen dieser Veranstaltung wurde auch „The Vienna Declaration on the European Open Science Cloud“ öffentlich vorgestellt.

The provision of open science is defined as a general policy aimed at overcoming the barriers that hinder the implementation of the European Research Area (ERA). An open science foundation seeks to capture all the elements needed for the functioning of ERA: research data, scientific instruments, ICT services (connections, calculations, platforms, and specific studies such as portals). Managing shared resources for the community of scholars maximizes the benefits to society. In the field of digital infrastructure, this has already demonstrated great benefits. It is expected that applying this principle to an open science process will improve management by funding organizations in collaboration with stakeholders through mechanisms such as public consultation. This will increase the perception of joint ownership of the infrastructure. It will also create clear and non-discriminatory access rules, along with a sense of joint ownership that stimulates a higher level of participation, collaboration and social reciprocity. The article deals with the concept of open science. The concept of the European cloud of open science and its structure are presented. According to the study, it has been shown that the structure of the cloud of open science includes an augmented reality as an open-science platform. An example of the practical application of this tool is the general description of MaxWhere, developed by Hungarian scientists, and is a platform of aggregates of individual 3D spaces.

This collaborative paper looks at how libraries can engage with and offer leadership in the Open Science movement. It is based on case studies and the results of an EU-funded research project on Research Data Management taken from European research-led universities and their libraries. It begins by analysing three recent trends in Science, and then links component parts of the research process to aspects of Open Science. The paper then looks in detail at four areas and identifies roles for libraries: Open Access and Open Access publishing, Research Data Management, E-Infrastructures (especially the European Open Science Cloud), and Citizen Science. The paper ends in suggesting a model for how libraries, by using a 4-step test, can assess their engagement with Open Science. This 4-step test is based on lessons drawn from the case studies.

Paolo Budroni has been working in the university sector since 1991. At the beginning he answers questions about his professional career in the field of research documentation and research data management. The interview addresses national and international projects and initiatives for research data management with a focus on the European Open Science Cloud. Im November 2017 fand an der Universität Wien der RDA Europe Workshop „From Planning to Action. Towards the Establishment of an Austrian Research Infrastructure“ mit Unterstützung von RDA Europe, der Technischen Universität Wien und der Universität Wien statt. Es war der erste in Österreich abgehaltene Workshop in einer Reihe von europaweiten RDA Veranstaltungen. Ziel war es, über praktische Umsetzungen von RDA Empfehlungen, Implementierungsmaßnahmen der European Open Science Cloud und andere bedeutende Dateninitiativen zu diskutieren, um europäische Forschende und die Entwicklung von Infrastrukturen bestmöglich zu unterstützen. Die unterschiedlichen Themenbereiche bezogen sich auf transversale und disziplinspezifische Projekte, Datenzentren und Repositorien in Österreich. Die Vorträge reflektierten auch die europäische Perspektive von Forschungsdatenmanagement sowie politische und wissenschaftliche Initiativen von internationalen Organisationen. Ebenso wurden Empfehlungen von einzelnen Working Groups dargestellt und anhand von Projekten gezeigt, wie diese bereits lokal Anwendung finden. In der Veranstaltung wurde schließlich eine neu gegründete RDA Gruppe für Österreich angekündigt. Dieser RDA Austria Node wird, nach der formalen Konstituierungsphase, die österreichische Community innerhalb der neuen administrativen RDA-Strukturen repräsentieren.
