The termination of Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) events is examined in terms of equatorial wave dynamics. In situ and satellite observations combined with an output from a linear wave model are used in this study. Our emphasis is on the 1997 IOD event but our results apply to other positive IOD events as well. We find that the termination of anomalously cold sea surface temperature (SST) in the eastern pole of the dipole is associated with a warming tendency caused by the net surface heat fluxes. However, net surface heat fluxes alone cannot explain the total change in the SST. We show that during the peak phase of an IOD event, the weakening of zonal heat advection caused by eastern boundary-generated Rossby waves combined with the reduction of vertical entrainment and diffusion creates favorable conditions for surface heat fluxes to warm the SST in the eastern basin.

Two stratus-lowering marine fog events observed on 28 September and 4 October 2018 during the Coastal Fog (C-Fog) field campaign that took place offshore of eastern Canada from 1 September to 6 October 2018 are described. In situ, profiling, and remote sensing observations were made at selected land sites in eastern Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, and aboard the research vessel Hugh R. Sharp cruising in adjoining coastal waters. Synoptic-scale analysis shows that both fog episodes result from the interaction between synoptic-scale surface-level low-pressure systems and a contiguous high-pressure system. At the same time, back trajectories reveal that the bulk of the fog layer is formed due to differential advection. The diameter of the fog droplets at the surface gradually decreases from the centre of the fog layer to its leading/trailing edges. The bimodal fog-droplet diameter distribution with peaks at 5–10 µm and 20–25 µm provide clues on droplet collision and coalescence processes. The observed difference between microphysical variables and droplet distribution between the two fog events and within the same fog layer might be governed by the atmospheric-boundary-layer (e.g., humidity conditions and turbulence) that prevailed in the fog layer. Overall, it is concluded that the life cycle of observed stratus-lowering coastal-fog episodes depends on synoptic conditions and atmospheric-boundary-layer characteristics such as stability, cloud-top cooling, and entrainment.

This work presents ship-based measurements of fog off St John’s, Newfoundland, on 13 September 2018 during the Coastal Fog field campaign. The measurements included cloud-particle spectra, cloud-base height and aerosol backscatter, radiation, turbulence, visibility, and sea-surface temperature. Radiosonde soundings were made at intervals of less than 2 h. Fog occurred in two episodes during the passage of an eastward-moving synoptic low-pressure system. The boundary-layer structure during the first fog episode consisted of three layers, separated by two saturated temperature inversions, and capped by a subsidence inversion. The lowest layer was fog, and the upper layers were cloud. The second fog episode consisted of one well-mixed fog layer capped by a subsidence inversion. Low wind speeds and stable stratification maintained low surface-layer turbulence during fog. Droplet size distributions had typical bimodal distributions. The visibility correlated with the droplet number concentration and liquid water content. The air temperature was higher than the sea-surface temperature for the first 30 min of the first fog episode but was lower than the sea for the remainder of all fog. The sensible heat flux was upward, from sea to air, for the first 62% of the first fog episode and then reversed to downward, from air to sea, for the remainder of the first fog episode and the second fog episode. The counter-gradient heat fluxes observed (i.e., opposite to what is expected from the instantaneous air–sea temperature difference) appear to be related to turbulence, entrainment, and stratification in the fog layer that overwhelmed the influence of the air–sea temperature difference. While the synoptic-scale dynamics preconditioned the area for fog formation, the final step of fog appearance in this case was nuanced by stratification–turbulence interactions, local advective processes, and microphysical environment.

The zonal-mean position of the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ) and its shift in the meridional direction significantly influence both the tropical and even global climate. This work reviews three aspects of the progress in ITCZ-relevant research: 1) the mechanism behind the asymmetry of the ITCZ annual- and zonal-mean positions relative to the equator; 2) causes of the double-ITCZ problem (pervasive in climate models) and the efforts to solve it; and 3) the physical mechanisms by which anthropogenic aerosols affect the location of the zonal-mean ITCZ. According to recent studies, the north-of-the-equator location of the annual- and zonal-mean ITCZ is mainly driven by the cross-equatorial energy transports in the ocean, induced by the Atlantic overturning circulation. A quantitative relationship between the ITCZ shift and the anomalous cross-equatorial energy transport in the atmosphere has been found. Presently, the double-ITCZ problem is still the most common and pronounced bias in tropical precipitation simulations with climate models. Recently, some studies have found that simply correcting the biases in hemispheric energy contrast does not improve the simulation of the ITCZ with climate models; whereas others have found that improving model resolutions and convective parameterizations in climate models, such as entrainment rate, rain-droplet re-evaporation, and convection triggering function, can alleviate the double-ITCZ bias. Therefore, it seems that the double-ITCZ problem in climate models is rooted in the complex physics of the models, which is not yet well-understood. In addition, anthropogenic aerosols are suggested to be able to induce meridional shifts of the ITCZ, but through various physical mechanisms. Absorbing aerosols like black carbon influence the ITCZ position basically via instantaneous absorption of shortwave radiation in the atmosphere, whereas scattering aerosols like sulfate affect the location of the ITCZ through the cloud lifetime effect and the subsequent response of surface evaporation.

Motivated by recent discussions concerning differences of convective dynamics in polluted and pristine environments, the so-called convective invigoration in particular, this paper provides an analysis of factors affecting convective updraft buoyancy, such as the in-cloud supersaturation, condensate and precipitation loading, and entrainment. We use the deep convective period from simulations of daytime convection development over land discussed in our previous publications. An entraining parcel framework is used in the theoretical analysis. We show that for the specific case considered here, finite (positive) supersaturation noticeably reduces pseudo-adiabatic parcel buoyancy and cumulative convective available potential energy (cCAPE) in the lower troposphere. This comes from keeping a small fraction of the water vapor in a supersaturated state and thus reducing the latent heating. Such a lower-tropospheric impact is comparable to the effects of condensate loading and entrainment in the idealized parcel framework. For the entire tropospheric depth, loading and entrainment have a much more significant impact on the total CAPE. For the cloud model results, we compare ensemble simulations applying either a bulk microphysics scheme with saturation adjustment or a more comprehensive double-moment scheme with supersaturation prediction. We compare deep convective updraft velocities, buoyancies, and supersaturations from all ensembles. In agreement with the parcel analysis, the saturation-adjustment scheme provides noticeably stronger updrafts in the lower troposphere. For the simulations predicting supersaturation, there are small differences between pristine and polluted conditions below the freezing level that are difficult to explain by standard analysis of the in-cloud buoyancy components. By applying the piggybacking technique, we show that the lower-tropospheric buoyancy differences between pristine and polluted simulations come from a combination of temperature (i.e., latent heating) and condensate loading differences that work together to make polluted buoyancies and updraft velocities slightly larger when compared to their pristine analogues. Overall, the effects are rather small and contradict previous claims of a significant invigoration of deep convection in polluted environments.

Different entrainment-mixing processes of turbulence are crucial to processes related to clouds; however, only a few qualitative studies have been concentrated on the vertical distributions of entrainment-mixing mechanisms with low vertical resolutions. To quantitatively study vertical profiles of entrainment-mixing mechanisms with a high resolution, the stratiform clouds observed in the Physics of Stratocumulus Top (POST) project are examined. The unique sawtooth flight pattern allows for an examination of the vertical distributions of entrainment-mixing mechanisms with a 5 m vertical resolution. Relative standard deviation of volume mean radius divided by relative standard deviation of liquid water content is introduced to be a new estimation of microphysical homogeneous mixing degree, to overcome difficulties of determining the adiabatic microphysical properties required in existing measures. The vertical profile of this new measure indicates that entrainment-mixing mechanisms become more homogeneous with decreasing altitudes and are consistent with the dynamical measures of Damköhler number and transition scale number. Further analysis shows that the vertical variation of entrainment-mixing mechanisms with decreasing altitudes is due to the increases of turbulent dissipation rate in cloud and relative humidity in droplet-free air and the decrease of size of droplet-free air. The results offer insights into the theoretical understanding and parameterizations of vertical variation of entrainment-mixing mechanisms.

Recent reports have highlighted the need for improved observations of the atmosphere boundary layer. In this study, we explore the combination of ground-based active and passive remote sensors deployed for thermodynamic profiling to analyze various boundary-layer observation strategies. Optimal-estimation retrievals of thermodynamic profiles from Atmospheric Emitted Radiance Interferometer (AERI) observed spectral radiance are compared with and without the addition of active sensor observations from a May–June 2017 observation period at the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement Southern Great Plains site. In all, three separate thermodynamic retrievals are considered here: retrievals including AERI data only, retrievals including AERI data and Vaisala water vapour differential-absorption lidar data, and retrievals including AERI data and Raman lidar data. First, the three retrievals are compared to each other and to reference radiosonde data over the full observation period to obtain a bulk understanding of their differences and characterize the impact of clouds on these retrieved profiles. These analyses show that the most significant differences are in the water vapour field, where the active sensors are better able to represent the moisture gradient in the entrainment zone near the boundary-layer top. We also explore how differences in retrievals may affect results of applied analyses including land–atmosphere coupling, convection indices, and severe storm environmental characterization. Overall, adding active sensors to the optimal-estimation retrieval shows some added information, particularly in the moisture field. Given the costs of such platforms, the value of that added information must be weighed for the application at hand.

The method of entrainment-limited kinetics enables atmospheric chemistry models that do not resolve clouds to simulate heterogeneous (surface and multiphase) cloud chemistry more accurately and efficiently than previous numerical methods. The method, which was previously described for reactions with first-order kinetics in clouds, incorporates cloud entrainment into the kinetic rate coefficient. This technical note shows how bimolecular reactions with second-order kinetics in clouds can also be treated with entrainment-limited kinetics, enabling efficient simulations of a wider range of cloud chemistry reactions. Accuracy is demonstrated using oxidation of SO2 to S(VI) – a key step in the formation of acid rain – as an example. Over a large range of reaction rates, cloud fractions, and initial reactant concentrations, the numerical errors in the entrainment-limited bimolecular reaction rates are typically ≪1 % and always %; thus, they are far smaller than the errors found in several commonly used methods of simulating cloud chemistry with fractional cloud cover.

Northward propagation of the boreal summer intraseasonal oscillation (BSISO) system over the Indian Ocean significantly affects Asia summer monsoon and extreme weather events including typhoons but many climate models poorly simulate the norward movement of BSISO. Here, we suggest that the modified parameterizations can improve BSISO northward propagation and three-dimensional dynamic and thermodynamic structures by enhancing the vorticity anomalies under the mean vertical wind shear and meridional gradient of mean moisture in the climate models. We hypothesize that poor BSISO simulation in a climate model may result from too frequent deep convections without abundant moisture in the boundary layer (BL). To represent them, the modified parameterizations include (a) a BL depth-dependent convective trigger, (b) a bottom-heavy diffusivity in the shallow convection scheme, (c) Relative humidity-dependent convective entrainment rate, and (d) reduced conversion rate of convective cloud water to rainwater. The modified parameterizations increase vertical shear over the northern Indian Ocean by strengthened easterly anomalies in the upper troposphere, inducing positive barotropic vorticity anomalies. The enhanced positive vorticities generate boundary layer moisture convergence and positive convective instability in the north of the BSISO convection center, inducing next convection and thereby improving northward propagation of the BSISO. The modified parameterizations also improve the meridional gradient of mean-moisture advection in the lower troposphere with increasing upward transport of moisture in the boundary layer. The increased air-sea interaction by modified parameterization tends to intensify the signal of the northward movement of the BSISO. It is shown that the modified parameterizations work properly in different types of convective parameterizations. The possibility that our hypothesis may be applied to other climate models for improvement of the BSISO northward propagation is discussed.

Fire spread associated with violent pyrogenic convection is highly unpredictable and difficult to suppress. Wildfire-driven convection may generate cumulonimbus (storm) clouds, also known as pyrocumulonimbus (pyroCb). Research into such phenomena has tended to treat the fire on the surface and convection in the atmosphere above as separate processes. We used a numerical model to examine the effect of fire geometry on the height of a pyroconvective plume, using idealised model runs in a neutral atmosphere. The role of geometry was investigated because large areal fires have been associated with the development of pyroCb. Complementary results (detailed in Part I) are extended by considering the effect that fire shape can have on plume height by comparing circular, square, and rectangular fires of varying length and width, representing the difference between firelines and areal fires. Results reveal that the perimeter/area ratio influenced the amount of entrainment that the plume experiences and therefore the height to which the plume rises before it loses buoyancy. These results will aid in the prediction of blow-up fires (whereby a fire exhibits a rapid increase in rate of spread or rate of spread) and may therefore be useful in determining where fire agencies deploy their limited resources.

The planetary-boundary-layer (PBL) flow and above is investigated for the central north coast of Brazil, an equatorial region spanning from 8° to 2°S. The daily PBL flow is controlled by vertical entrainment of horizontal momentum from a southerly large-scale flow associated with the Hadley cell, and by a mesoscale pressure gradient force (PGF) created by the differential heating between land and ocean. Near the coast, the flow is from the north-east quadrant comprising a small rotation, probably caused by a weak mesoscale PGF and a weak Coriolis force. Inland it is north-easterly in the morning, but deep mixing during the afternoon brings down momentum from above causing it to become south-easterly. The mesoscale PGF executes a daily 360° rotation at most of the stations. In the afternoon it points to land due to continuous heating of the land, and a sea breeze develops in the presence of the background flow. Once convection dies out, the transfer of horizontal momentum is reduced, and the marine-air layer can flow faster into the continent as a nocturnal jet. As the stable boundary layer grows thicker, this flow tends to be eliminated at the surface. By morning, the mesoscale PGF points north, forcing the inland flow to become south-easterly, while on the coast flow becomes almost easterly. This scenario repeats during dry and wet seasons and can be understood as a consequence of the south–north propagation of an atmospheric circulation resembling a helix with its rotation axis oriented parallel to the shoreline.

On August 14, 2020, it occurred a landslide-induced debris flow in Wangcang County, Sichuan Province, Southwest China, three people killed, and two houses destroyed. Behaved as a typical geohazard chain, it originated from a rockslide in marlstone, controlled initially by structural planes in rock mass, and evolved into a debris flow through successive geophysical process. This debris flow reached a run-out distance of 2050 m in the horizontal and 628 m in vertical direction. Remote sensing analysis, field survey, and laboratory tests were conducted to investigate its failure mechanism and dynamic characteristics. The results found that the source zone in the gully was 16.32 × 103 m2, with a volume of 317.52 × 103 m3. Interbedded marlstone with dense structural planes was one of controlling factors for the landslide failure. The continuous rainfall up to 315 mm during the previous 24 days and 32 mm at the date before the incident directly motivated rock slope failure. The contributions of topography, rock fragmentation, entrainment, and flow discharge for this process were discussed. It is found that changes in slope from 11° to 40° provided tremendous potential energy for the rock mass sliding with high speed and then disintegrating in traveling. Entrainment in the channel increased the fine content of the moving rocky mixture. In addition, the flow discharge changed the rheological properties of the mixture by adding seepage. These factors significantly affected the transformation process. Notably, the turning relief or confluence site may be accelerating this process. This research may provide references for further research on geohazard chains.

Both low clouds and elevated ducts are common phenomena in the oceanic atmosphere. Low clouds affect elevated ducts by changing the structure of atmospheric temperature and humidity. However, due to the limitation of met-ocean measurements, research on them is still scattered. This paper presents the distribution of elevated ducts and clouds over the central Western Pacific Ocean (WPO) based on Global Position System (GPS) sounding data and Himawari-8 satellite products from November 2015 to January 2016. Results show that the frequency of elevated ducts detected by ship-based GPS soundings was as high as 77% over the central WPO. The height and frequency of elevated ducts are closely related to the low clouds. If there are no clouds, the occurrence probability and mean base height of the elevated ducts are 14% and 730 m, respectively. By comparison, the occurrence probability and mean base height increase up to 24% and 1471 m, respectively, in the presence of cumulus (Cu) clouds, and 22% and 1511 m, respectively, in the presence of stratocumulus (Sc) clouds. Elevated ducts occur near the cloud top. The analysis of geopotential height and wind fields from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) reanalysis dataset (ERA-interim) shows that the study area is covered by a strong and stable subtropical high, and slowly sinking dry air masses inside the subtropical high are above the moist boundary-layer air mass. The appearance and evolution of low clouds will adjust the temperature and humidity structure of the lower troposphere. If there are no clouds, the marine boundary layer (MBL) is the classic mixed boundary layer. Humidity gradient and subsidence inversion are formed atop the mixed layer. When low clouds are present, long wave radiation and entrainment atop clouds form a strong temperature inversion and humidity gradient, which strengthen elevated ducts. However, when Sc clouds are decoupled, a weaker temperature inversion and humidity gradient may occur between the surface mixed layer and subcloud layer, leading to a weak elevated duct atop the mixed layer.

The measurement of surface moisture on beaches is vital for studying aeolian sand transport mechanisms, but existing techniques are not adequate for monitoring the surface moisture dynamics over a substantial beach section. In this study, we investigated the suitability of a new remote sensing method to monitor the spatiotemporal variation in surface moisture on a sandy beach using a long-range static terrestrial laser scanner (TLS). The TLS was permanently deployed on top of a 42 m high building overlooking the study site at Ostend-Mariakerke, Belgium. Considering the effect of target surface roughness on the intensity and the laboratory’s length limitation, a new intensity correction method is proposed which only uses the field point cloud data measured on a homogenous beach surface (without time-consuming indoor experiments). Based on the corrected intensity data, the relation of the beach surface moisture to the corrected intensity was modeled by an exponential model with a correlation-coefficient squared of 0.92. A moisture estimation model was developed which can directly derive the beach surface moisture from the original intensity data of the TLS with a standard error of 2.27%. The hourly surface moisture dynamics across two tidal cycles on the beach were investigated as a case study, in which the point clouds derived from corresponding unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) imagery are utilized to improve the calculation accuracy of the incidence angles of TLS point clouds at long distances. Results reveal that, after the intensity correction, the long-range static TLS is an extremely suitable technique to monitor the surface moisture dynamics (daytime and nighttime) over a substantial beach section (hundreds of meters) at a high scanning frequency (minutes to hours).

This study explores the counterpart of marine heatwave, known as the cold blob, in the Northeast Pacific (NEP) by selecting the long-lived events with the normalized sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies averaged over the blob area (160°–135° W, 40°–50° N) smaller than − 0.75 for at least 5 months. There are 10 summer-peak events with a stronger intensity and 7 winter-peak events. The summer-peak cold blob events are mostly attributed to the vertical entrainment when the mixed layer depth is shoaling. For the winter-peak group, the greater heat loss at surface is the principal factor to stimulate the cold blob, associated with the intense westerly anomalies around the blob area. However, the vertical entrainment generally hinders the amplification of winter-peak cold blobs. Moreover, the advection of colder-than-normal water to the blob area contributes much less for both two groups. We conjecture that the NEP cold blob and tropical La Nina-like state are potentially linked. The summer-peak cold blob event is often followed by a La Nina event in the ensuing winter. On the other hand, the equatorial La Nina-like SST cooling in late summer and autumn in turn enhances the winter-peak cold blobs. We find the subtropical region, particularly near the Baja California, may act as the oceanic bridge to connect the NEP cold blob and equatorial La Nina.

The Sun was dimmer earlier in Earth’s history, but glaciation was rare in the Precambrian: this is the ‘faint young Sun problem’. Most solutions rely on changes to the chemical composition of the atmosphere to compensate via a stronger greenhouse effect, whereas physical feedbacks have received less attention. We perform global climate model experiments, using two versions of the Community Atmosphere Model, in which a reduced solar constant is offset by higher CO2. Model runs corresponding to past climate show a substantial decrease in low clouds and hence planetary albedo compared with present, which contributes 40% of the required forcing to offset the faint Sun. Through time, the climatically important stratocumulus decks have grown in response to a brightening Sun and decreasing greenhouse effect, driven by stronger cloud-top radiative cooling (which drives low cloud formation) and a stronger inversion (which sustains clouds against dry air entrainment from above). We find that systematic changes to low clouds have had a major role in stabilizing climate through Earth’s history, which demonstrates the importance of physical feedbacks on long-term climate stabilization, and a smaller role for geochemical feedbacks. Reduced planetary albedo due to fewer low clouds on early Earth could explain some 40% of the required forcing to offset the faint young Sun, according to global climate model experiments.

Some flow-like landslides tend to lose materials while moving on a relatively dry sliding surface. This phenomenon is called bed deposition. In contrast to the bed entrainment phenomenon, bed deposition is relatively poorly understood. Therefore, an improved depth-averaged model is proposed to quantify this phenomenon. The deposition depth is calculated according to the momentum conservation of the deposited mass, and the rheological property of the sliding mass on the bottom is modified considering an abrupt increase in the depth of the sliding surface after deposition. Utilizing the proposed model, the Gaolou andslide, a typical flowlike landside occurring on October 6th, 2006 with an obvious bed deposition phenomenon in Shaanxi Province of China, is simulated to investigate the influence of bed deposition on its propagation process. The results indicate that the proposed model can effectively depict the bed deposition phenomenon in the Gaolou landslide. Bed deposition dissipates part of the kinetic energy of this lndslide; thus, the simulated debris inundation area would likely be overestimated when this effect is neglected. On the other hand, the thin liquefied layer formed by the bed deposition process reduces the friction energy dissipation, contributing to the high mobility of this landslide.

Calibration of the cumulus parameterization scheme for localized areas is one method that can improve numerical weather prediction rainfall forecast accuracy. Calibration for model development, however, is a time-consuming procedure that requires numerous simulations. The utilization of an efficient method for calibrating complex dynamical models can help mitigate the heavy computational costs involved. In this study, five parameters in the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) Kain–Fritsch cumulus scheme were calibrated based on rainfall verification in the northwest and the southeast regions of the Philippines. Two optimization methods—Multiple Very Fast Simulated Annealing (MVFSA) and Adaptive Surrogate Modeling-Based Optimization (ASMO)—were used to find the best parameter set values. Both methods generated a higher coefficient of downdraft (Pd), lower entrainment (Pe), and longer convective available potential energy (CAPE) consumption time (Pc), which were found to result in better skill scores than the default WRF. Precipitation amount in both calibrated models decreased leading to an overall less wet bias. Precipitation skill score in the northwestern Philippines significantly improved by 35%, while that of the southeastern Philippines only increased by 3%. In addition, model calibration had no significant effect on the simulated temperature and wind speed. The results show that calibration of the cumulus parameterization scheme yields better results for convective rainfall rather than rain from stratiform clouds, which is expected since the cumulus parameterization scheme represents the effects of sub-grid-scale convective processes.

This work presents a numerical study of performance characteristics and flow dynamics of a centrifugal rotor operating with gas-liquid flow. An Euler-Euler polydispersed model is adopted, which was validated in a previous publication and is used in this work to assess quantities not addressed in the earlier study. An analysis of the rotor performance under two-phase is performed, for which suitable expressions are presented. In particular, an analysis of the rotor head components is carried out including the dynamic head evaluation through the rotor, which is often neglected in most studies. The numerical model is explored further to analyze flow patterns and relevant gas-liquid flow quantities. This includes analysis of the three-dimensional distribution of the gas phase inside the rotor, evaluation of gas-liquid interphase forces, and the effect of the intake gas flow rate on the bubble diameter, gas-liquid relative velocities, and the overall turbulence levels through the rotor. Such analyses, which are usually hard to obtain through experimental methods, are also rarely found in related numerical studies. Thus, this work could bring useful information to help in the understanding of the gas-liquid flow behavior in centrifugal rotors, while also contributing to the progress of numerical solution of this problem.

The paper presents results of an experimental study of the structure of gas-liquid flow in a slit microchannel with a cross section of $$200\times 1205$$ $$\mu$$ m and an aspect ratio of 1:6. The liquids used were ethanol and distilled water, and the gas was nitrogen; a cross-junction mixer performed the mixing. In the wide ranges of gas and liquid flow rates J $$_\mathrm{liq}=0.02$$ –0.1 m/s and J $$_\mathrm{ gas}=0.03$$ –73 m/s, characteristic patterns of gas-liquid flow were determined: the flow with elongated bubbles, transitional flow, stratified flow, stratified-wavy flow, stratified-wavy flow with droplet entrainment, and annular flow. Maps of flow patterns were constructed. The conditions were determined at which the liquid was displaced from menisci to the wide side of microchannel at high gas velocities with formation of wave flow in the liquid film.

A non‐eddy‐resolving microscale model is applied to simulate convection over three different leads (elongated channels in sea ice), which were observed by aircraft over the Arctic Marginal Ice Zone in 2013. The study aims to evaluate the quality of a local and a non‐local turbulence parametrization. The latter represents a lead‐width‐dependent approach for the turbulent fluxes designed for idealised conditions of a lead‐perpendicular, near‐neutral inflow in an atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) capped by a strong inversion at around 250 to 350 m height. The observed cases considered here are also characterised by an almost lead‐perpendicular flow but, in comparison to the idealised conditions, our analysis covers effects in stable inflow conditions and a much shallower ABL. The model simulations are initialised with observed surface parameters and upwind profiles, and the results are compared with measurements obtained above and downwind of the leads. The basic observed features related to the lead‐generated convection can be reproduced with both closures, but the observed plume inclination and vertical entrainment near the inversion layer by the penetrating plume are underestimated. The advantage of the non‐local closure becomes obvious by the more realistic representation of regions with observed vertical entrainment or where the observations hint at counter‐gradient transport. It is shown by comparison with the observations that results obtained with the non‐local closure can be further improved by including the determination of a fetch‐dependent inversion height and by specifying a parameter determining the plume inclination as a function of the upwind ABL stratification. Both effects improve the representation of fluxes, boundary‐layer warming, and vertical entrainment. The model is also able to reproduce the observed vanishing of a weak low‐level jet over the lead, but its downwind regeneration and related momentum transport are not always well captured, irrespective of the closure used., In typical springtime conditions of a cold atmospheric flow over the warm surfaces of leads, which are open‐water channels in sea ice, strong convective plumes are generated which have a large impact on atmospheric boundary‐layer characteristics. Here, a small‐scale model is applied to simulate such situations and model results obtained with different turbulence parametrizations are evaluated using airborne measurements. The local land–atmosphere coupling (LoCo) investigates the interactions between soil conditions, surface fluxes, planetary boundary layer (PBL) growth, and the formations of convective clouds and precipitation. Studying LoCo over the Tibetan Plateau (TP) is of great significance for understanding the TP's role in the Asian water tower. A series of real-case simulations, using the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model with different combinations of land surface model (LSM) schemes and PBL schemes, has been carried out to investigate the LoCo characteristics over a typical underlying surface in the central TP in the rainy season. The LoCo characteristics in the study area are analyzed by applying a mixing diagram to the simulation results. The analysis indicates that the WRF simulations, using the Noah with BouLac, Mellor-Yamada Nakanishi and Niino Level-2.5 PBL (MYNN), and Yonsei University (YSU) produce closer results to the observation in terms of curves of Cp⋅θ and Lv⋅q, surface fluxes (Hsfc and LEsfc), entrainment fluxes (Hent, and LEent) at site BJ of Nagqu Station (BJ/Nagqu) than those using the Community Land Model (CLM) with BouLac, MYNN, and YSU. The frequency distributions of Hsfc, LEsfc, Hent, and LEent in the study area confirm this result. The spatial distributions of simulated Hsfc, LEsfc, Hent, and LEent, using WRF with Noah and BouLac, suggest that the spatial distributions of Hsfc and LEsfc in the study area are consistent with that of soil moisture, but the spatial distributions of Hent and LEent are quite different from that of soil moisture. A close examination of the relationship between entrainment fluxes and cloud water content (QCloud) reveals that the grids with small Hent and large LEent tend to have high QCloud and Hsfc, suggesting that high Hsfc is conducive to convective cloud formation, which leads to small Hent and large LEent. A sensitivity analysis of LoCo to the soil moisture at site BJ/Nagqu indicates that, on a sunny day, an increase in soil moisture leads to an increase in LEsfc but decreases in Hsfc, Hent, and LEent. The sensitivity of the relationship between simulated maximum daytime PBL height (PBLH) and mean daytime evapotranspiration (ET) in the study area to soil moisture indicates the rate at which the maximum daytime PBLH decreases with the mean ET increase as the initial soil moisture goes up. The analysis of simulated Hsfc, LEsfc, Hent, and LEent under different soil moisture conditions reveals that the frequency of Hent ranging from 80 to 240 W m−2 and the frequency of LEent ranging from −240 to −90 W m−2 both increase as the initial soil moisture increases. Coupled with the changes in QCloud, the changes in Hent and LEent as the initial soil moisture increases indicate that the rise in soil moisture leads to an increase in the cloud amount but a decrease in QCloud.

Studies of emission factors from biomass burning using aircraft data complement the results of lab studies and extend them to conditions of immense hot conflagrations. A new theoretical development of plume theory for multiple tracers is developed after examining aircraft samples. We illustrate and discuss emissions relationships for 422 individual samples from many forest fire plumes in the Western USA. Samples are from two NASA investigations: ARCTAS (Arctic Research of the Composition of the Troposphere from Aircraft and Satellites) and SEAC4RS (Studies of Emissions and Atmospheric Composition, Clouds and Climate Coupling by Regional Surveys). This work provides sample-by-sample enhancement ratios (EnRs) for 23 gases and particulate properties. Many EnRs provide candidates for emission ratios (ERs, corresponding to the EnR at the source) when the origin and degree of transformation is understood. From these, emission factors (EFs) can be estimated, provided the fuel dry mass consumed is known or can be estimated using the carbon mass budget approach. This analysis requires understanding the interplay of mixing of the plume with surrounding air. Some initial examples emphasize that measured Ctot=CO2+CO in a fire plume does not necessarily describe the emissions of the total carbon liberated in the flames, Cburn. Rather, it represents Ctot=Cburn+Cbkgd, which includes possibly varying background concentrations for entrained air. Consequently, we present a simple theoretical description for plume entrainment for multiple tracers from the flame tops to hundreds of kilometers downwind and illustrate some intrinsic linear behaviors. The analysis suggests a mixed-effects regression emission technique (MERET), which can eliminate occasional strong biases associated with the commonly used normalized excess mixing ratio (NEMR) method. MERET splits Ctot to reveal Cburn by exploiting the fact that Cburn and all tracers respond linearly to dilution, while each tracer has consistent EnR behavior (slope of tracer concentration with respect to Cburn). The two effects are separable. Two or three or preferably more emission indicators are required as a minimum; here we used eight. In summary, MERET allows a fine spatial resolution (EnRs for individual observations) and comparison of similar plumes that are distant in time and space. Alkene ratios provide us with an approximate photochemical timescale. This allows discrimination and definition, by fire situation, of ERs, allowing us to estimate emission factors.

We use a high-resolution (9 km) one-way nested regional climate modeling framework to systematically evaluate individual and aggregate roles of various components of topography in the precipitation distribution during South Asian Summer Monsoon (SASM). While it is not the arrival but the north-northwestward extent of summer monsoon precipitation that is regulated by the presence of elevated surfaces in South Asia, both the thermal and mechanical topographic forcing play a role. Topography not only provides mechanical uplifting and prevents dry air entrainment, it also helps regulate the strength of upper level anticyclone and tropical easterly jet, all of which are necessary to sustain a conducive environment for monsoon precipitation in the South Asian summer. In turn, precipitation feedbacks positively by accelerating the tropospheric diabatic warming through atmospheric latent heating and by maintaining the moisture supply through local recycling. Modifications in the topography, particularly the removal of the Tibetan Plateau, substantially modulates the moist flow in the lower troposphere and the anticyclonic circulation in the upper troposphere to an extent that the northern branch of SASM becomes substantially weaker. These changes give way to negative precipitation anomalies and eventually to an environment where the cycle of feedbacks that runs the process of monsoon progression over land becomes inefficient. The design of topographic modification experiments can influence precipitation response; therefore, we advise caution in the interpretation of these and previously reported results.

The current paper investigates the flow and turbulence characteristics over dune bedforms by means of laboratory experiments, where spatially dense and temporally high frequency velocity measurements were done. Although similar studies are available in the literature, the focus and novelty of the current study is to assess the influence of surface roughness of the dune bedforms on the nearbed flow. For direct comparison, two different surface roughness heights over idealized, fixed-shaped, high-angled dune bedforms were tested; one with a hydraulically-smooth surface, and the other with a fully-rough surface. Spatial variation of time-averaged flow as well as turbulence statistics were examined, which was complemented by streamline plots and spectral analyses. The results are interpreted from sediment entrainment and sediment transport points of view. The results show that increased dune surface roughness reduces the nearbed flow velocity, but increases the flow velocities at upper regions. The upward directed flow near the dune crests becomes stronger in the case of smooth surface, while the re-attachment point moves further downstream compared to the rough wall case. It is concluded that the roughness of the dune surface affects the nearbed flow and turbulence characteristics qualitatively and quantitatively, which is shown to have direct consequences on sediment entrainment characteristics.
