Translation is crucial in cross-cultural communication, especially in today's globalized world. Understanding translation techniques, such as the Molina-Albir technique, is key to producing high-quality translations. This study aims to evaluate the understanding and application of Molina-Albir translation techniques among English Literature students at Bina Sarana Informatics University. This descriptive qualitative research involves observing and analyzing the translation work of peers. It focuses on students in class 33.6A during the Even Period of 2022-2023, who will analyze their classmates' translations based on detailed instructions. Data is analyzed both qualitatively and quantitatively, with results validated by researchers and/or lecturers. The study found that 68% of students had a fair to very good understanding of Molina-Albir techniques, while many scored below 60%. Key issues included misidentification of techniques such as amplification, modulation, and adaptation, indicating a need for improved teaching methods.

Artificial intelligence (AI)-driven learning has become an irreversible trend in foreign language education. Scholars are increasingly focusing on this field, yet few have examined its impact within English literature classes. To fill this gap, we designed an 8-week intervention study with mixed methods and recruited 90 students, with 42 in the experimental group and 48 in the control group, matched for average age, English proficiency and gender ratio. Critical thinking levels were measured before and after the intervention using a standardised assessment tool. In the experimental group, students used AI tools (ChatGPT-3.5, Bodoudou, SummarizBot, etc.) to generate and answer text-related questions, and participate in interactive quizzes and AI-assisted debates during classes, while the control group followed traditional methods without AI tools. The findings revealed a statistically significant improvement in the critical thinking skills of the experimental group compared to the control group, as measured by pre and postintervention assessments (p < 0.05). This suggests that AI tools can effectively enhance critical thinking abilities in English literature classes. This study not only contributes to the emerging discourse on AI in education but also offers practical implications for integrating AI technologies to support and enrich the learning experiences of EFL students in literature classes. The findings have the potential to guide educators and policymakers in designing AI-driven educational strategies that are culturally responsive and pedagogically effective.

In the era of remote learning courses, the humanities instructor struggled more than most to translate the many familiar techniques of close reading to the unfamiliar realm of technology. Oftentimes instructors have depended on facsimiles of traditional methods: a shared passage annotated by the class digitally, or small groups sent to individual breakout rooms which will eventually rejoin the class and share their findings. This article offers a methodology which incorporates the beneficial technologies which were necessary in remote classrooms into the traditional classroom, encouraging students to collaborate and debate through the shared digital annotation of primary texts.

The decline in English majors has energized instructors to upskill for the post-COVID Gen Z student. Toward that end, this small-scale (n=20), one-semester study of an upper-division literature class identifies the preferred learning styles of English majors at a public comprehensive regional university in Kentucky. The participants represent national English major demographics. The research methods are quantitative and qualitative. Eight figures and an appendix are included. Three guidelines emerge for responding to the needs of Gen Z students: (1) keep communication brief, (2) co-create, and (3) interact in-person. The findings about English major learning preferences uphold cross-disciplinary research on active learning in the post-COVID era by indicating ways our teaching styles can keep pace with the needs of our changing majors. In addition to the participants' experience in the investigator's course, the survey collects their experience of teaching styles in six core courses in the English major. One drawback of the study is the small participant sampling. Future studies might investigate the difference between students' preferred learning styles and instructors' actual teaching styles. Building the English major back better calls for putting accepted theory into reskilled practices.

As a means for students to comprehend and communicate knowledge in our technologically advanced and culturally diverse globalized societies, more integrative ELT approaches are required. Multiliteracies is a literacy concept that addresses meaning-making variability in various cultural, social, or domain-specific contexts. Extensive reading activities are an essential component of the curriculum for Indonesian EFL students, especially those who major in English in higher education. Previous research has demonstrated that reading literary texts can enhance cultural comprehension. Reading is fundamental to getting new information and fostering students' empathy for world conditions. This qualitative case study aims to discover the implementation of multiliteracies practices and the student's responses to the multicultural book Amazing Grace in the multiliteracies framework in the Extensive Reading class. The researcher used a purposive sampling of one lecturer and twenty students in the Extensive Reading classroom. Data are compiled through observation and interviews. The data are then analyzed through Saldaña's (2016) coding. The findings showed that the lecturer had implemented all stages of multiliteracies. The students showed various responses to multicultural literature in every multiliteracies stage. Their responses demonstrated that the practice could recollect their knowledge of diversity in Indonesia. They also can investigate the cultural identity and aspects within the text. They evaluated the text's meaning based on their experience regarding cultural issues. Last, they constructed multiculturalism-themed posters as a reflective practice of critical learning. The students' responses emphasized raising multicultural awareness and upholding tolerance. This research provides new insight into how multiliteracies pedagogy can encourage students' responses to multicultural literature. The inclusion of multicultural awareness is crucial for Indonesia as a multicultural country.

Purpose: Private supplementary tutoring - widely known as shadow education because of the ways in which it mimics regular schooling - is increasingly visible across the globe. The Middle East is no exception, though the phenomenon has received relatively little attention in the English-language literature. This article maps some key features of shadow education, identifying ways in which contextual forces have shaped it. Design/Approach/Methods: The article focuses on patterns across and within the six members of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), namely Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. It draws on literature in both Arabic and English and shows the value of multiple units of comparison. Findings: Private tutoring has a long history as a significant phenomenon in some GCC countries, but in others developed more recently. Some governments have had active policies to dampen the phenomenon, but with little success. Factors in the complex dynamics include social, economic and cultural forces. Originality/Value: The article assembles literature from around the region, noting both commonalities and diversities among GCC members. It contributes to the global literature by providing the regional mapping from this specific part of the world and by showing comparisons with other world regions.

This paper focuses on integrating multimodal communication into the English-as-a-foreign-language classroom to enhance the development of students' multimodal communicative competence, multiliteracies, and 21st-century skills. To do so, I compiled a corpus of authentic materials from Lady Whistledown's Society Papers in Julia Quinn's novel "The Viscount Who Loved Me" (2000), her appearances as narrator in the Netflix series "Bridgerton" (2022), and some tweets posted by @Bridgerton. This corpus was used to plan and design a game-based teaching proposal. Finally, the paper offers a critical analysis and suggests how this proposal can feasibly contribute to fostering students' multimodal communicative competence.

The online flipped classroom model (OFC) is increasingly being adopted in higher education. However, little is known about the effect of OFC on students' self-regulated learning (SRL). The current study explored the students' SRL strategy in the OFC. A quantitative method with multiple linear regression analysis based on online survey data was used to assess how 111 first-year, English literature students at a university in Indonesia used SRL strategies after implementation of the OFC. The results indicated that the students' experience in relation to the OFC was positive and their self-regulation of goal setting, environment structure, and help seeking were developed. Based on the results of correlation analysis it was found that the OFC experiences significantly correlated to the students' SRL skill. Suggestions for effectively designing OFC approaches to develop students' SRL are proposed and areas needing future research are discussed.

The study examined the role of self-efficacy and self-regulated learning on the effect of self-directed learning on academic writing problem-solving for EFL undergraduates. The study applied a cross sectional design to evaluate 213 students from the Departments of English Education and English Literature of a private university in Malang, Indonesia. Participants aged 18 to 24 years were randomly selected to ensure representative samples. This study assessed undergraduate students' writing problem-solving using custom instruments inventory of problem-solving in academic writing. Selfdirected learning, self-efficacy, and self-regulated learning are evaluated on different scales. Methods such as confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation models are used to ensure the instrument's validity and reliability. The study found that selfdirected learning had a significant impact on self-efficacy and selfregulated learning and on writing problem-solving. The study also found an important relationship between self-directed learning and the ability of EFL undergraduates to solve academic writing problems through self-efficacy and self-regulated learning. This research contributes to ongoing discussions on the relevance of selfdirected learning for personal and professional development. It encourages re-evaluating educational and organizational strategies to maximize self-directed learning's benefits and minimize potential challenges.

From its conception in Australia, subject 'English' has been considered central to the curriculum. The English literature strand in the curriculum does not stipulate specific texts but is more explicit regarding what should be considered as an appropriate 'literary text'. Curriculum documents emphasise the need for texts to have cultural and aesthetic value whilst suggesting that English teachers include texts that are chosen by students, texts from Asia, and texts by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander authors. Despite this, the influences of British colonisation manifests in Australian English teachers' text selection as they continue to choose texts from the 'canon'. This paper is framed by Rigney's principles of Indigenism and Indigenous Standpoint Theory (1999; 2017) and will draw on my own lived experience -- as an Aboriginal student, English teacher, and now researcher -- to examine the presence of colonialism in English and the consequent subordination of Indigenous perspectives. This paper will suggest some of the ramifications of prioritising colonial texts while teaching and learning on Aboriginal land and investigate how the construction of subject English could feel assimilative to Indigenous people. I will explore this by using my own experience of learning William Shakespeare's 'Othello' as a student and of teaching Doris Pilkington's 'Follow the Rabbit-Proof Fence' as a teacher as examples.

We teach English literature in South Africa, to third- or fourth-language English speakers. Increasingly dissatisfied with the effectiveness of our pedagogy under conditions of massification, we seek to agitate propositions about our students' reading and what these propositions means for our pedagogy. Drawing on narrative theory we analyse our students' written responses to a portfolio assessment designed to scaffold their reading of a setwork novel, Lauren Beukes' "Zoo City." Six patterns emerge, around paraphrase, compensation strategies that replace literary reading, repertoires of knowledge and how these relate to access, personal salience and dissonance, reader discomfort, and decolonial opportunities. Understanding the students' reading for our course as a complex web of material, social and affective relations opens avenues for pedagogy and assessment design that frames literary reading as communal encounter.

In considering how to bring joy back to education and the curriculum in England, I argue that it is also necessary to bring the joy of teaching back to classroom practitioners. A fundamental contribution to this may be leadership typologies employed by schools' senior leadership. As an experienced secondary English teacher, over the last 20 years I taught at schools in which my experiences of being led -- just prior to, and then under, the education reforms introduced to promote the 'knowledge-rich' approach1 -- were very different. This article reflects on my experiences of contrasting leadership-styles, and of educational leadership on a national scale, through the metaphorical lens of one of the poems I taught for GCSE English literature. My aim is to consider how leadership can be successful, sustainable and inspiring of joy.

Testing organizations are faced with increasing demand to provide subscores in addition to the total test score. However, psychometricians argue that most subscores do not have added value to be worth reporting. To have added value, subscores need to meet a number of criteria: they should be reliable, distinctive, and distinct from each other and from the total score. In this study, the quality of subscores from two subscore augmentation models (Wainer and Yen) was compared in terms of distinctness and variability. The reliabilities of the Wainer-augmented subscores were also examined. The models were applied to a high-stakes English language proficiency test in Iran. The results of the study showed that Yen better-satisfied subscore distinctness while Wainer best-preserved variability and had high-reliability subscores. In other words, Yen-augmented subscores had lower correlations while Wainer-augmented subscores better discriminated examinees with different ability levels. Thus, none of the examined models of subscoring satisfied all criteria. The results of the study are discussed and suggestions for future research are provided.

Recently, translanguaging has begun challenging and replacing English-only policies in English-medium instruction (EMI) contexts, advocating that bi/multilingual learners may better internalise information in two or more languages. Within this perspective and using linguistic ethnography as the framework, this case study examines the translanguaging practices used by the instructor and the students in English literature classrooms and how/whether these practices mediate learning when multilingual resources are used for pedagogical purposes. The data for this study comes from the researcher, as the instructor, observing and recording their two content classrooms in an English Literature department, namely Contemporary British Novel and Discourse Analysis courses. These observations and recordings were analysed from a pedagogical translanguaging lens to identify the instructor's input and the students' output in terms of their display of linguistic repertoires in English (the language of instruction) and Turkish (the shared language in the classroom). The results provide implications for research and practice, offerings suggestions for how/whether a pedagogical translanguaging lens might be adopted in content classrooms.

Following Richards's (2015) ideas of using movie clips, videos, and games as valuable technological tools for language learning, the present study was conducted to investigate the effectiveness of using novel extracts and computer game cutscenes based on the same story to develop the vocabulary knowledge of English as a foreign language (EFL) learners. The study employed a quasi-experimental design with a control group and an experimental group. Initially, both groups studied a target vocabulary list of 20 words and their definitions. The participants were asked to complete a multiple-choice definition matching test after studying the list to find out whether their levels of vocabulary knowledge were comparable prior to the applications. For the experimental group, a second vocabulary test equivalent to the first one was conducted after they read a novel extract including the target vocabulary items, and a third test was carried out after they watched two computer game cutscenes that were based on the same events as the novel extract to understand whether seeing the target vocabulary items in these contexts repetitively would result in a significant increase in their target vocabulary knowledge. For the control group, the second and the third vocabulary tests were undertaken immediately after the first one to investigate whether mere exposure to equivalent vocabulary tests without the interventions would lead to a significant increase in their target vocabulary knowledge. The findings of the study indicated that the scores of the participants in the experimental group increased descriptively on the second test and significantly on the third test, whereas the scores of the participants in the control group decreased significantly on the second test and descriptively on the third test. The study provides practical and academic implications based on the findings.

Preparing English as a foreign language (EFL) students for final exams and language exams has become more and more significant in secondary education. However, those students who continue their studies as English majors have to live up to new expectations and rise to different challenges such as reading and discussing literary texts written in English. Thus, they would need help, nevertheless it is generally believed in many university courses that students have already reached the needed language proficiency level and they are able to read academic texts in English without having difficulties (Paran, 2008). Therefore, firstyear English majors are often unprepared to cope with the demands made on them in literature courses. The main objective of this interview study, involving four EFL and four English literature tutors from a university in Hungary, is to explore the tutors' perceptions on first-year English majors' reading habits, what reading skills and strategies are required in literature courses. The findings provide an insight into some of the issues related to reading texts in English, what demands English majors have to meet when they enter tertiary education, and some possible solutions.

This paper explores the effectiveness of online teaching methods during COVID-19 pandemic due to the closure of educational institutions. Online classes were introduced as a strategy of bridging the learning gap created by the pandemic, with the goal of maximizing learning opportunities and reaching remote areas. The University of Prizren "Ukshin Hoti" (UPZ) faced the challenge of adopting online teaching methodology due to the changing needs of the students. The learning process at UPZ during the period as it was organized through virtual platforms resulted not satisfactory. Main challenges were found out to be virtual classrooms, internet network, computer equipment. A quantitative survey was conducted from 153 students from a group of English Language and Literature students for determining the usefulness of online classroom. This survey reveals the limitations and inadequate of online classroom based teaching.

The United Nations' (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) aim to create a sustainable world and provide permanent solutions to major social, ecological, and economic problems affecting the world. Education holds a central position in disseminating and achieving these goals with a thorough understanding. From this stance, English language teaching (ELT) lends itself to giving leeway to integrating SDGs considering students' academic purposes. With all these in mind, this study investigates EAP students' conceptualization of SDGs and derives from data collected from 360 undergraduate students enrolled in the English language and literature department at a state university in Turkey. A descriptive survey design was employed to seek answers to the research questions, and both quantitative and qualitative data were collected from participants. Results revealed divergences between qualitative and quantitative findings. Quantitative findings indicated the predominance of the systems thinking perspective among the participants, suggesting that they viewed SDGs as a complex whole, encompassing various intertwined and interconnected elements. However, qualitative findings revealed the problematic conceptualization of SDGs, providing deeper insights into the phenomenon in question. In line with these findings, this study suggests several pedagogical implications for integrating SDGs into teaching practices.

This essay analyzes student experiences of studying all-female and non-binary cast Shakespeare productions in the Seattle area, including upstart crow collective's "Richard III" and The Fern Shakespeare Company's "Much Ado About Nothing." I draw on my teaching of the experimental work of these regional companies in an upper-level special topics course focused on all-female and non-binary Shakespeare, "Early Modern Drama on the Modern Stage," to articulate the pedagogical value of students' experiences of representation in live theater performances of Shakespeare. I argue for the importance of intentionally framing such inclusively-cast productions, and describe the enlivened learning that emerges from students' creative and analytical engagements with the local voices of modern Shakespearean performance, which offer representations of their identities in live theater within their own communities. To do so, I detail students' responses to these performances, their study of the history of women's Shakespeare, and the classroom products--including two major collaborative projects--that document their learning at the site of performance.

Over the past decade, local live productions of Shakespeare have become increasingly visible to scholars and audiences alike, both through critical work on the subject as well as through public projects such as Shakespeare on the Road. This visibility highlights the cultural and artistic work of regional theatre. On the one hand, local live productions celebrate regional culture through visual or aural appropriation: original music written by local artists, or an iconic building recreated in the set. On the other hand, these shows also expand and sometimes challenge our sense of Shakespeare's work through these local appropriations. And yet, despite recent interest in local live productions, there is a curious lack of scholarship on how we might encourage students to understand and appreciate regional productions of Shakespeare. This article explores one way to engage students in regional Shakespeare through discussing the Nashville Shakespeare Performance Archive, a student-curated online archive of local productions that has been a feature of Shakespeare classes at Belmont University in Nashville since 2016. Funded by a micro-grant from the Folger Institute, this project enables our students to collect artefacts from the Nashville Shakespeare Festival's annual performances and curate them into a suite of webpages each year that includes video footage, interviews, photos, musical scores, set models, costume sketches, and other elements of the production. This article overviews the early years of the project and explores a recent redesign that more directly challenged student assumptions about what constitutes a performance of "Shakespeare." Ultimately, this article makes the argument that a student-curated archive has the potential to slow students down in their encounters with local live theatre, helping them to identify a show's contributions to local artistic identity and challenge their notion of Shakespearean "authenticity."

The benefits of performance-based classroom approaches to teaching Shakespeare have been well-documented in pedagogical scholarship. This paper is an effort to push beyond the performance-based classroom and begin to incorporate ideas from the field of performance studies into a new pedagogical approach that capitalizes on my institution's proximity to a resident ensemble Shakespeare theatre, the Cincinnati Shakespeare Company (CSC). I propose what I hope is a strong approach to teaching Shakespeare at the performance. Ultimately, this paper is about bridging the gap between performance-based in-class activities and in-person attendance at live performance, connecting these two experiences into a pedagogically cohesive and effective approach. In this essay, I will outline a carefully scaffolded course design that prepares students to engage critically with Shakespeare at the performance, using both a series of preparatory readings and exercises, and a multiple post-performance engagement opportunities. The preparation includes performance-based classroom exercises; readings focused on theatrical reviews of early modern plays in performance; using performance to discuss and resolve textual cruxes; reading some introductory material about performance studies theory; and discussing the physical space of the theatre, with a particular focus on the local history and impact of CSC's newly constructed theatre. Students will attend two live performances at CSC and a staged reading by the on-campus theatre department. After each of these events, they will complete post-performance assignments to help them engage critically with the experience of live theatre. They will write reflections that address the physical space of the theatre and the experience of being an audience member, analysis essays focused on specific moments in the performance that provide rich textual interpretation, and collaboratively-authored reviews of the performance. We will discuss in class the nuanced distinctions between attending live theatre and viewing filmed productions, and the different formats live theatre can take, from staged readings, to Shakespeare in the park, to full-scale theatrical productions. This aspirational course design will provide a test case for a pedagogical approach that combines performance-based classroom techniques with more advanced performance studies concepts and capitalizes upon access to live theatre. Through this kind of classroom approach and engagement, students will learn that theatre is a collaborative experience, and that audiences shape performance. They will gain an appreciation of the power of local theatre to make classical texts live anew and in locally meaningful ways. And they will learn a wide variety of new approaches to texts they may have previously struggled with interpreting.

The present study explores the educational potential of multiliteracies-based pedagogy to enhancing pre-service teachers' creativity-convergence competency in an EFL literature classroom. To examine the pedagogical effect, both quantitative and qualitative data were analyzed, including the pre- and post- creativity-convergence competency tests, participants' course evaluation questionnaire, and students' reflective journals. The results from the quantitative analysis indicated that multiliteracies pedagogy employed in the EFL literature classroom enhanced participants' creativity-convergence competency significantly (p<0.05) in its all components, including creativity, problem-solving ability, convergent thinking ability, and self-efficacy. The findings in the analysis of participants' views on the positive potentials of the multiliteracies pedagogical approach in fostering learners' creativity-convergence competency were identified as follows: (1) use of multimodal resources in the communication process promoted their creativity-convergence competency, (2) transformative practices served as the facilitator to foster creativity-convergence competency, and (3) critical literacy practices helped them develop problem-solving ability and self-efficacy. The paper ends with some pedagogical implications and suggestions for further research.

Idioms are a colourful and fascinating aspect of English which are commonly used in all types of language, formal and informal, spoken and written. Despite the emerging theoretical accounts of idioms up to now, little attention has been paid to teaching and learning idiomatic expressions in English as a Foreign Language, English for Specific Purposes or English for Academic Purposes classroom. Developing idiomatic competence among English language learners in Slovakia remains a formidable challenge. Secondyear undergraduates of the study programmes 'Teacher Training of English Language and Literature' (single major study) and 'Teacher Training of English Language and Literature (double major study) need to master different types of idioms within one-term course in 'English Lexicology and Phraseology'. Their language skills will increase rapidly if they can understand and use them confidently and correctly. The communication role of idiomatic comparisons is often neglected, as well. The aim of the paper is to find out their level of knowledge of standard idiomatic comparisons at the beginning and the end of the course. The paper intends to reveal how students of different nationalities -- Slovak, Hungarian, Russian and Ukrainian -- are able to explain the meaning of similes used in example sentences in English or their mother tongue. Altogether 51 students are tested twice via tests focused on similes, and their results are compared via a statistical t-Test. The results from the initial test show that their knowledge of idiomatic comparisons was not very wide. However, the results from the final test prove that they were motivated to learn idioms, and thus they extended their knowledge of idiomatic comparisons significantly. In addition, the paper suggests some implications for teaching and learning similes and phraseological units in general.

This article examines how technology-enhanced inquiry-based learning (IBL) affected students' language acquisition and the evolution of motivation in the subject of English as a Foreign Language (EFL). Furthermore, this study presents a proposal for the collaboration of the subjects of Spanish and English, using translanguaging to establish connections between students' L1 and L2 and reducing curricular duplications. EFL presents itself as an opportunity for learners to engage with a broader scope of authentic resources, using Inquiry-Based Learning (IBL) as the main driving force of problem-solving situations. Thus, the investigation used Tolkien's literary world as the main theme and topic of research, and robotics (Ozobot), IBL and a gamified learning management system (Classcraft) as the main methodologies. Through a series of diagnostic and proficiency tests (which included a robotic-supported storytelling activity and an ARCS motivation test), quantitative data were gathered concerning the two analysed variables. Results indicated improved language acquisition and motivation in all four parameters. Furthermore, Ozobot showed to have a quick adaptation period for student use at basic levels of functioning, as well as aiding in creative storytelling. Results will contribute to closing the knowledge gap detected in EFL learning since has been mostly used for scientific learning.

This exploratory practice study examined the effectiveness of film adaptation in teaching a Shakespearean play, "The Merchant of Venice," during the fall semester of 2022 at the Higher Institute of Languages, Gabès. Qualitative and quantitative data from third-year students majoring in English language, literature, and civilization, as well as teachers of English literature were collected through a questionnaire and two interviews. Questionnaire results indicated that the majority of students had a positive view of the film adaptation of the play in question, noting that it helped them overcome their anxiety when reading Shakespearean works and increased their motivation and engagement. The teachers interviewed highlighted the effectiveness of film adaptation in teaching literature, in general, and Shakespearean plays, in particular.

This IRB-approved qualitative case study was grounded in Vygotsky's (1978; 1987) socio-cultural constructivism theory and New London Group (1996) postulates of multiliteracies. The participants in this project were 12 domestic and international polylingual English as an Additional Language students at a public university in one of the north-eastern states in the United States of America. The data was collected via site and participant observations, analytical notes and memos, surveys, audio-recorded and transcribed interviews, and artifacts in the forms of the reading comprehension tests to two different texts. One of the texts was supported by an audio recording, another one had a video support with the sound track. All the data was coded using Saldaña's (2012) thematic and value coding and triangulated in the process of analysis. The findings of this study indicated that all 12 research participants strongly relied on the means of multimodality while reading the texts and working with the comprehension test questions. All participants in this study found video mode as most helpful to them, followed by the auditory one in the process of their meaning making of the text, which they found complex. Major implication of this study is that multimodality needs to be embedded in the higher education curriculums in order to assist students, including but not limited to the polylingual EAL leaners with reading and meaning making.

Grounded within the tenets of culturally responsive education, this qualitative case study examined the culturally responsive instructional practices of teachers working with linguistically, ethnically, and culturally diverse students in sheltered English Language Arts (ELA) classrooms that mainly serve English language learners in an urban high school located in the midwest United States. Three teachers participated in the study through interviews and observations. The findings of the study indicate that the inclusion of culturally and linguistically affirming and familiar tasks, including translanguaging, led to greater student engagement and academic gains in the ELA classroom.

Disrupting the canon of Eurocentric literature often used as a whole-class novel study in the secondary English Language Arts (ELA) curriculum is needed in order to push back against white hegemony in and out of ELA spaces. This disruption needs to occur at the teacher preparation level through discussion, examination, and curriculum development, including contested and nostalgia-laden texts such as Harper Lee's (1960) "To Kill a Mockingbird" (TKAM). In this paper, we draw on Sealey-Ruiz's (2019) concept of the archaeology of the self, Vygotskian perspectives on literacy instruction (Lee & Smagorinsky, 2000), and the gradual release of responsibility in teaching and learning to interrogate the metaphor of the "grasp" that the canon has on the ELA community. We examine the epistemological shifts and evolutions between a preservice ELA teacher and an ELA teacher educator in a two-year study that focused on developing Culturally Sustaining Literacy Pedagogy (Paris, 2012; Paris & Alim, 2017) aiming to disrupt the teaching of TKAM. We found that releasing ourselves from the canonical grasp of TKAM, placing it not as a centered novel, but as a literary artifact, was imperative in disrupting our own whiteness and developing culturally relevant, responsive, and sustaining critical literacy instruction surrounding themes of present-day racism and (in)justice.

The present research paper seeks to ascertain whether students respond emotionally to literature-- as it is argued that the emotions experienced during reading help interpret literary texts. To that end, the study departs from an investigation of students' personal responses only to determine whether emotion-based responses exist in the EFL context, thus answering the central question that guides this work: do affective responses to literature exist? The stakeholders involved in this study are master-one, EFL students who specialize in literature and civilization at the University of Oran 2, in Algeria. These students were asked to answer a mixed-methods questionnaire. Of the 61 students concerned with the study, thirty-one have answered. The analysis of the ensuing data showed that affective responses to literature are quasi-nonexistent, thus the urgent need to reassess the current literature teaching approaches.

Firstly, this paper analyzes the role of AI in the reading management of English language and literature, establishes the implicit knowledge base of neural network, designs the auxiliary reading system for learning English language and literature, and optimizes the English language and literature management model of AI. The experimental results show that its reading efficiency is increased by 0.48%, and the performance of the credibility model is improved by 0.53% compared with the original system, which greatly optimizes the running time of the system. To some extent, it helps users to manage their time in English language and literature reading, and greatly improves users' reading efficiency and quality. Based on this advantage of AI algorithm, this paper introduces that the algorithm optimizes the reading management model and the training process of neural grid, and constructs a model of English language and literature assisted reading system based on AI. The system can better meet the needs of users in English language and literature reading management.

This article interrogates the role of retrieval practices in an urban, multicultural London classroom. With the advent of cognitive science-based approaches in recent years, retrieval has become a central tenet for testing foundational knowledge in English literature. I consider the implications of retrieval for classroom discourses concerning feeling, experience and aesthetics. I ask whether it is possible to conceptualise 'retrieval' differently to encompass the funds of knowledge offered by our students and contexts that lie beyond the classroom.

In Hong Kong, Chinese and English are considered separate mediums of instruction. English immersion is expected for schools that teach with English as the medium of instruction, and direct instruction in Chinese is often used to teach English in Chinese medium schools. Evidently, a great divide persists in the Hong Kong government curriculum. In the English classroom, translanguaging is considered as detrimental to students' progress or reserved for the lower ability students. The significance of translanguaging on students' identity and meaning making is overlooked due to institutional English-only discourse. This article examines the possibility and potential impact of translanguaging in Hong Kong from the perspective of a student teacher who was an international school student and tuition centre instructor.

This qualitative Action Research study explores a group of lower secondary pupils' use of social semiotic resources and traditional and digital tools to develop an understanding of "Romeo and Juliet" at a private trilingual school in Barcelona. Forming part of a wider study undertaken by an English language and literature teacher, it documents how learners engage in visual, linguistic, manual, and digital responses to the play. The results show the increased enjoyment and the agency of learners when a range of modes are introduced to facilitate a Shakespeare study. It demonstrates how integrating multimodality can encourage pupils to draw on their backgrounds and cultural experiences to access classic texts. Furthermore, it reveals how a multimodal approach can be part of a student-centred pedagogy and facilitate assessment methods that are alternative to traditional written assignments. Integrating multimodal composition processes gives learners opportunities to create texts for a specific audience, to think critically about the reading, make personal connections with the classical play, and increase their knowledge of English literature.

This article analyses the activities and early outcomes of an ongoing co-designed and co-delivered research impact project entitled "Decolonising the English Literature A-Level". It draws on examples from three case studies, classroom experiences, and student and teacher feedback to show how efforts to support the decolonisation of taught content and pedagogies aimed at A-Level learners can generate benefits for students relating to knowledge and understanding; skills development; personal motivation and well-being; academic attainment; and educational and career ambitions and prospects.

This article explores the use of artificial stuttering as a powerful practice and therapy in higher education in Palestine where the need for applied drama is increasing. It specifically focuses on the artistic and/or performative reemployment of Charles Dickens's "Nicholas Nickleby" to enhance the academic achievement and social development of dysfluent students throughout and beyond their university education. By using extra-curricular, art-mediated training and in-class performance of chosen passages from Dickens's narrative, students not only improve their linguistic and intellectual competencies but also develop dynamic confidence to articulate themselves in daily social contexts during self-presentation. This academic practice, which is part of a one-term educational disability programme, focuses on training a selected number of undergraduate students with a severe or mild stutter by relying on the technique of artificial impersonation of the stuttering of Smike, who is one of the most common Victorian dysfluent characters, in different melodramatic acts. In this experience, students show linguistic growth and social command of communication, and thus chart a new subjective identity.

This paper delves into the intricate realm of Shakespearean characters in love, employing a psychoanalytical lens to unravel the depths of their emotions, desires, and conflicts. Drawing on psychoanalytic theories, particularly those of Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung, this paper aims to dissect the subconscious motivations and psychological intricacies of characters such as Romeo and Juliet, Orsino and Viola, and other iconic figures. Through this analysis, the paper seeks to offer a nuanced understanding of how Shakespeare masterfully crafted characters whose emotional journeys resonate with universal human experiences. In addition to exploring the psychoanalytical aspects of Shakespearean characters' love, this paper also investigates the socio-cultural influences shaping their romantic dynamics. By examining the historical context in which these plays were written and performed, it aims to illuminate the ways in which societal norms and expectations intersect with individual psychology to influence characters' behaviors and choices. Furthermore, it analyzes how Shakespeare's portrayal of love reflects broader themes of power, gender, and identity, shedding light on the complex interplay between personal desire and societal constraints in Renaissance England. Through this multidimensional approach, it endeavors to provide a comprehensive examination of Shakespearean love that resonates with contemporary audiences while honoring the timeless brilliance of the Bard's storytelling.

This essay considers what happens in the English classroom when teaching the same lesson to two classes considered to be of different levels of 'ability'. It explores what happens during a discussion about the fate of Eva Smith in "An Inspector Calls" when students' reading of a text diverges. I consider what teachers do when students' readings of a text goes against our expectations and accepted critical norms of both the teacher and the National Curriculum. Finally, I explore the potential problems with using retrieval practice as a way to manage divergent readings and interpretations in classroom discussion.

This essay surveys C. S. Lewis's statement and critique of British education as found in "Screwtape Proposes a Toast" (Lewis, 1961) and other works within his oeuvre. In this short story, Lewis elaborates on the state of education in postwar English society through the eyes of his protagonist: a demon. In distilling Lewis's Christian philosophy of education, the essay explores individuality, differentiation, and various correlated themes in juxtaposition to extant literature on twentieth-century educational reform. Having the educational impact of Christian tenets as the common denominator, the essay concludes with individuality and differentiation standing at the core of Christian education.

Although interdisciplinary scholars have long debated the ethics of empathy, it continues to be widely seen as universal, prosocial, and reparative in education. Subject English, long associated with the work of producing civilised, moral and cultured students, is a critical locus for the activation of empathy. But what becomes of empathy in the high stakes senior secondary English classroom? Drawing on an in-school ethnography, the paper begins to map the ways in which empathy is activated through and around set literary texts in Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) English classrooms in Australia. In so doing, it highlights the unpredictable nature of empathy as a relation exceeding pedagogical mediation, as well as the troublesome aspects of empathy entangled with neoliberal imperatives and the interpellation of the civilised English student. Finally, it turns to the generative possibilities of an empathy unsettled -- an unruly empathy.

Interactive Fiction (IF)--a digital form of non-linear narrative writing--requires readers to respond, to make choices that shape their reading experience. I argue that such choices can be put to use in the classroom, helping teachers to facilitate metalinguistic talk. In this article, I offer a clear conceptualisation of metalinguistic talk, drawing upon existing research to create a useful framework comprised of four characteristics. Using this framework, and with reference to interview data and field notes, I analyse and consider two transcripts of classroom talk in order to explore the extent to which a particular work of IF enabled me to facilitate metalinguistic talk with a class of 16-17-year-old English Literature students. The lesson in question formed part of an action research project exploring the possibilities for IF in the secondary school English classroom. I argue that the choices contained within "A Great Gatsby," a work of IF which I designed via a process of critical-creative textual intervention and using Fitzgerald's "The Great Gatsby" as my source material, can help to scaffold metalinguistic talk--conversations "about" language.

This article explores the tensions between the concept of powerful knowledge, developed by social realist scholars Michael Young, Leesa Wheelahan and others, and the history of thinking about school subject English. In it I outline why, since its inception, the study of literature has had an ambivalent relationship with the notion of academic knowledge. I then draw out three areas of tension between curriculum thinking in the "powerful knowledge" paradigm and prominent research scholarship in school subject English. I tentatively argue that, despite real differences, there are still areas of fruitful discussion around central questions pertaining to the nature of the curriculum and the rationale for school subject English.

While Sada Harbarger is primarily known as the author of the first genre-based technical communication textbook, 1923's "English For Engineers," I argue through extensive archival materials that her innovative conferencing with engineering students and interdisciplinary writing efforts, rather, drove her interwar success at Ohio State. Her rural agricultural background and acquaintance with the engineering faculty, combined with her literature training, led to OSU's engineering faculty demanding successfully that English promote her without reference to her textbook. Harbarger is also a notable early example of navigating being a female professor teaching engineering writing in a male-dominated English literature department.

Despite the difficulty of defining young adult literature (YAL), the benefits of it have been well recognised for adolescent learners. With the aim of exploring pedagogical approaches to L2 literature, this study reports on a YAL reading programme carried out in a secondary EFL classroom in China. To gain both teacher and student perspectives, data were collected from three main sources: semi-structured interviews with the teacher and student participants (N = 3); teacher's reflective journal; students' written works published on a social media platform (N = 304). Following the comprehensive approach model of L2 literature teaching [Bloemert, J., A. Paran, E. Jansen and W. van de Grift. 2019. Students' perspective on the benefits of EFL literature education. "The Language Learning Journal" 47, no. 3: 371-384.], the teaching activities of the reading programme carried out over ten weeks are presented and analysed, illustrated by samples of students' work. Findings of the study suggest that YAL has positive effects on teenage L2 learners including interest in the story and relatable protagonists, enhanced understanding of the embedded culture, and personal growth. Teaching activities conducted in this programme are categorised into facilitating activities and reading tasks. Two principles for L2 literature teaching are drawn out of the teaching activities: providing others' perspectives and eliciting students' perspectives on the novel; and integrating multimodal production into literature teaching. Detailed implications for future practice are explored.

This study examines the negative effects of social media addiction on the reading habits of second language learners at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. It is anchored on two theories: the Uses and Gratification theory and the Time Displacement theory. These theories were exploited in assessing the effects of addiction to the use of social media on the reading habits of second-language users. The quantitative method for data collection and analysis was adopted. A questionnaire was administered to 525 respondents to ascertain the level of their addiction to social media and reading habits. The study shows that students are seriously addicted to social media, spending 3-4 hours on non-academic matters, which affects their reading habits seriously. Based on the above discoveries, it is recommended that compulsory orientations should be organised on when, how, and what social media should be used for.

Our paper seeks to investigate how mediation using emerging technologies can increase student engagement within the context of teaching English Literature in Singapore. Through a discussion of our ongoing project to create an adaptation of Shakespeare's "Pericles, Prince of Tyre" as an animated game in virtual reality, we focus upon the interdependencies between narrative content, style of visualization and interactive engagement to demonstrate the potential of fully immersive media in an educational context. "Pericles" is one of Shakespeare's lesser-known plays: in five acts, it tells the dramatic story of a family separated at sea and reunited by fate. Our findings will highlight the opportunities that works of Shakespeare that fall outside the group of texts commonly studied offer for innovation within the classroom, as well as the benefits of taking a practice-led approach to research that draws together Shakespeare scholars, artists, researchers, and technical developers to adopt a playful yet meaningful approach towards educating secondary-level students. Most importantly, however, we will focus on demonstrating how our adaptation facilitates conclusions regarding employing animated immersive media for novel ways of teaching "boring", complex, canonical literary texts. We suggest our adaptation prompts a reconsideration of means of student engagement for classical literature in general, and Shakespeare's work in particular.

This study addresses the problems in traditional English literature teaching methods for Chinese English majors, proposing a new teaching approach based on smart education concepts to enhance learning effectiveness. An evaluation of a semester-long reform in teaching methods is conducted using a quantitative methodology. The findings reveal significant differences in learning outcomes between the experimental and control classes, suggesting the new model's positive influence on student academic performances. Machine learning algorithms are also used to analyze student classroom behavior, indicating a significant increase in active engagement. In conclusion, students' learning outcomes, as well as engagement, can be substantially improved by integrating smart education techniques into English literature instruction.
