Concerns have been raised about a potential shortage of farm animal vets in the UK. There is no apparent lack of new graduates willing to work with farm animals, but practices report difficulties in recruiting and retaining experienced farm animal vets. Retention of vets in farm animal practice has been identified as a key issue for the sustainability of veterinary businesses and livestock health. A cross-sectional study design was used to identify factors associated with vets remaining in farm animal practice. Data were collected via an online questionnaire covering employment, education, personal background and future plans. The target population was vets with experience of farm animal work in the UK. 380 responses were included in the analysis. Working in a practice where accommodation was provided and an increasing number of years since graduation were associated with significantly lower odds of remaining in farm animal practice, while working in a practice where staff appraisals were carried out; coming from a family with a commercial farm; spending more time on farm work and being on call with an experienced vet in the first job after graduation increased the odds of remaining in farm work. Although continuing professional development (CPD) is regarded as mandatory by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons, it is not yet a statutory requirement. To understand what motivates veterinary surgeons to engage in CPD and perceived barriers to participation, a national survey was administered to a sample of the profession. The study sought to report overall opinion and to compare the views of different groups in terms of decade of graduation, gender, employment status, area of employment and position in the workplace. The results of the study are encouraging in that recent graduates would like to engage in more CPD, compared with their predecessors, and are the most intrinsically and extrinsically motivated. However, significant barriers to participation exist, including personal barriers, a lack of workplace support and a lack of CPD activities at a suitable time, location or level. Part-time workers reported higher barriers than full-time workers. Although the majority (90 per cent) of respondents receive all or part of their CPD funding from employers, a significant proportion (41 per cent) are required to fund at least part of their CPD. First-opinion practitioners reported significantly less access to a professional library, which has implications for lifelong learning and the practice of evidence-based veterinary medicine. The present study was undertaken to determine the permanent employment status, changing job opportunities and cross-sectoral orientations of veterinarians and to evaluate the views and expectations regarding to sectors for near future and the year 2023. For this aim, a questionnaire was applied to totally 771 veterinarians, from public workers (398) and private sector workers (377). According to data analysis, it was determined that public sector employees expect more to found a permanent job when compared with private sector employees but change their job less than others. Although private sector seems to be more advantageous in terms of job opportunities the transition from private sector to public sector was found to be higher rates in today's conditions. The particular fields expected to have the highest improvement potential were 'food quality and security', 'organic agriculture-animal husbandry', 'herd health', 'public health' and 'companion animal sector' in near future and 2023. In conclusion, it can be said that public space are more preferable than the other work areas in veterinary medicine in Turkey and the opinions of participants about the areas which will gain the importance in next future and 2023 year point to "One medicine one health concept" awareness. In this paper I have collected information about the first women veterinarians in approximately 40 countries. However, I am aware of the fact that some information may not be complete or correct, therefore, I shall be very glad to receive any missing information or rectification. Nowadays, when in some countries female veterinary students make about 75-80% or even more of veterinary medicine students in total, it is good to learn that a century ago it was not easy for women to study veterinary medicine, a subject taught since Cheiron's time only to male students. The first countries where we found female veterinarians are Switzerland, France, Great Britain and Germany. In all these countries veterinary schools have an old and rich tradition. A stimulating factor for women to study veterinary sciences was also the First World War because of good possibilities for employment. After WWI it was easier to study veterinary medicine for women, especially in the newly founded countries: Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia, and Baltic countries. A lot of German university professors worked in the 1920s and 1930s in Bulgaria and Turkey, which probably also contributed to the situation: women were beginning to be accepted at studies of veterinary medicine. The development and implementation of new fields such as hygiene, laboratory, pets, fish disease etc. also resulted in the opening of new working areas for women veterinarians. Objective-To identify factors associated with veterinarians leaving a career in rural veterinary practice (RVP). Design-Cross-sectional descriptive study. Sample Population-Veterinarians from the United States who no longer worked in RVP Procedures-Veterinarians in any area of practice were solicited to participate in an online survey through invitation letters sent to various veterinary associations. Those who indicated that they had left RVP were asked to rank the importance of various potential factors in their decision to leave RVR Results-805 responses were obtained from veterinarians who had worked in RVR of which 246 (30.6%) had left RVP Most (231/246 [93.9%]) of those who reported leaving RVP had been in practice > 5 years, and 75.2% (185/246) had been in practice> 12 years. Eighty-three (33.7%) who left RVP pursued careers in urban areas, 72 (29.3%) entered academia, and 7 (2.8%) retired. Reasons for leaving RVP ranked by the highest proportions of respondents as being of high importance were emergency duty, time off, salary, practice atmosphere, and family concerns. Women ranked factors such as time off, mentorship, practice atmosphere, conflict with staff, and gender issues as being of high importance more often than men did. Conclusions and Clinical Relevance-Results suggested that the perceived shortage of veterinarians in RVP may be in part influenced by a lack of retention, particularly among experienced veterinarians. Targeted efforts to tackle issues related to emergency duty, time off, salary, practice atmosphere, and family issues could help alleviate the efflux from RVP. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
