- Abstract
This article analyzes the notion of emotion in early modern England, specifically throughout the Elizabethan era, from some perspectives of cultural history (Febvre and Burke) and the so-called "affective turn". First, it identifies the terms that describe and allude to emotions in two of the most representative treatises on the subject, those of Thomas Rogers and Thomas Wright, published in 1576 and 1601, respectively, to verify that the term "emotion", which describes a certain alteration of mood, does not appear in these sources, as its use in English is later. Both writers choose concepts that they consider synonymous to refer to emotions, whether "feelings", "perturbations", "motions", or "affections", but, above all, "passions", which emphasizes the intensity of that which is suffered, although without entirely denying human agency. Secondly, it is established that both sources draw on Hippocratic-Galenic humoral theory and the philosophical heritage of Aristotle and Augustine, among others, but differ in the moral perspective of the emotions, for while Wright professed Catholicism, Rogers adhered to the Protestant Reformation. Finally, it is argued that Elizabethan culture assumes that the male subject not only experiences and expresses emotions in a different way than women, but also that while his emotions are rooted in the brain, liver and spleen, the entire female emotional structure, with its various manifestations, is associated with the womb. - Abstract
In Vilcún, Chile, on the evening of September 21, 1942, Francisca Cayupi Marín confronted and publicly stabbed Alberto Moraga Bello for leaving her and marrying someone else. Employing a microhistorical approach and based on the study of this legal case file, this research proposes, on one hand, the analysis of the use of violence as female agency in the face of conflicts in couples; and on the other hand, the analysis of emotions in the construction of a narrative of female defense in judicial testimonies, understood as a performative act and the display of negotiating abilities in response to decisions by judges and justice agents, within a regional and border space. 4. EL FUROR, LA FURIA, LA VORACIDAD Y LA DESCOMPOSTURA: EVALUACIONES DEL EXCESO PASIONAL DE MUJERES EN LOS ARCHIVOS JUDICIALES DEL CHILE TARDO COLONIAL.

- Abstract
This article explores how was identified and evaluated the emotional states of women who, seized by strong emotions, reacted in a violent and disorderly way executing "excesses" considered outside the bounds of law in Captaincy General of Chile during the 18th century. To do so, it examines judicial records involving violent behaviors, interpersonal disputes and family conflicts in which mood was scrutinized to explain what predisposed the person's actions. It delves into how women's passional excess or disturbed emotions were described, comparing it to the descriptions of men acting under similar predisposition to find out patterns behind this identification and the evaluation made by those involved in the altercation, judges, witnesses and lawyers. The article suggests that Chilean culture identified in "furor" and "fury", translated into reactions that denoted "voracity" and "discomposure", a seed of inner instability that was close to madness or that could be assimilated to it. This state of internal disturbance could affect both men and women, although the evaluation on its significance was in each case different. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article examines what we term the 'un/making' of friendships: the complex, sometimes non-linear ways in which friendships start, are maintained (or not) and break down (or not). In doing so we seek to open out some of these complexities and explore how they interact with the form of these relationships. Drawing on repeat, in-depth interviews and ethnography with a friendship group of young people in rural community in the English Midlands, this paper theorizes the un/making of friendships through an exploration of young people's im/mobilities, their emotional attachments and responses to their friendships, and the ways in which their friendships are made, developed, sustained, fractured, and repaired as young people grow up/go on through transitions to adulthood. In doing so, the paper combines and contributes to literatures on geographies of friendships, youthful transitions and temporalities, and im/mobilities, principally through its theorization and exemplification of the 'un/making' of friendships. Emotions are central to human behavior and, consequently, play a significant role in policymaking. While the Multiple Streams Framework (MSF) incorporates the notion of "public mood" into the political stream, this concept primarily focuses on a fleeting, less intense, and diffuse emotional state that is not necessarily linked to a specific triggering event or policy‐related object. To address this limitation, the current article draws on robust findings from political psychology, viewing and interpreting the MSF through an emotional lens. It investigates the intersections between emotions, on the one hand, and the assumptions and structural elements of the MSF, on the other, by sharpening existing concepts—such as the emotional agenda (policy) window, emotional decision window, and emotional policy entrepreneurs—to examine emotionality in policy dynamics. It concludes by discussing how an emotional perspective on the MSF can help scholars generate nuanced hypotheses, overcome the MSF's metaphorical language, and gauge when policy may be in search of a rationale. Currently, one of the topics that attracts the most interest in the experimental science didactics research agenda are emotions and their role in learning and teaching. Given the above, a review of the literature in this regard is presented here. Our study has a first phase of identifying publications in databases such as Scopus, Dialnet and Redalyc and a second phase of selection with theoretical criteria, in which those documents that presented reviewed and meta-analysis against research advances in this line. Subsequently, the data from these selected documents were organized, coded and analyzed with the help of the Atlas.ti24 data processing software, resulting in the recognition of some "key moments" within the research on emotions in science teaching. We begin our analysis with the identification of some causes of the lack of research on the subject and we reach the point of making considerations for its rise in the last decade and projections for the near future. Emotions play an important role in fostering positive parenting and healthy child development. This qualitative study explored the affective experiences of racially diverse US fathers with low income across the prenatal, postnatal, and early childhood periods. Semi‐structured interviews were conducted with 24 fathers. Interview questions asked about fathers' early parenting experiences that elicit parenting emotions of different valence. Results from thematic analysis demonstrated activation of multiple emotions depending on different proximal and distal experiences. Specific to proximal experiences, fathers reported feeling both excited and anxious about pregnancy and joyful and disappointed at childbirth. Related to distal experiences, fathers reported feeling encouraged by their social support networks that further aid their parenting, but feeling marginalized given systematic barriers (e.g., societal bias, high incarceration rates of Black fathers). Most importantly, fathers' parenting emotions, especially negative ones, led to them resolving to stay involved in their children's lives, gaining a sense of responsibility, and changing behaviors to do right by their children. Fathers resorted to various coping strategies to regulate their negative emotions. Overall, fathers with low income are emotionally resilient. Infant and early childhood health professionals should support fathers' mental health to promote father‐child engagement and thus, ultimately, young children's mental health and wellbeing. 12. Entre a tristeza e a ira: emoções em disputa nas narrativas sobre o crime de uma mulher (São Paulo, Brasil, 1939).

- Abstract
In 1939, Marília, a thirty-year-old Brazilian housewife, residing in São Paulo, killed her lover, Armando, with an axe and gunshots. She turned herself in to the police and was admitted by her brother-in-law to the Pinel Sanatorium, a psychiatric institution catering to the city's more affluent social groups. The sources for this research include clinical documents—such as a medical report, lab tests, prescriptions, and a letter written by Marília—as well as newspaper articles from São Paulo that reported on the crime. Drawing on theoretical and methodological frameworks from the socio-cultural history of emotions, the history of women and gender, and the history of madness and psychiatry, this article identifies the emotions that surface in the different documents recounting Marília's story. Our primary objective is to analyze these emotions, not to explore their specific meanings, but to understand what they produce. I aim to comprehend how the collection of these emotions, as articulated across the various narratives I examine, operates through shared meanings to construct both an event and a subject: Marília. The different narratives about her life, including her own, and the crime she committed, highlight two central emotions: sadness and anger. This analysis demonstrates that these emotions operate within an emotional framework that defines places, possibilities, and limitations for women, grounded in the perception of their interconnected bodies and minds, social markers of difference, and expert discourses. It also reveals that emotional resistances are persistent. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Taking post-return everyday food practices as the primary analytical lens, this paper interrogates how the emotions of transnational returnees are structured by shifting spatio-temporalities in the process of return. Based on ethnographic fieldwork in Shanghai, the empirical discussion examines the experiences of overseas returned students in Shanghai through three cases. These respectively highlight how practices and emotions relate to the persistence of hometown tastes throughout migration, the embrace of host foods while studying overseas, and the adaptation to new dietary patterns after return. These cases of post-return exemplify the intricate connections between food, place, and emotions. There are two implications drawn from the empirical discussion. First, from the spatial perspective, the post-return emotions of transnational return migrants are intricately linked not only to the place to which they return and currently reside in but also to the places they previously experienced as emigrants. Second, the emotions of transnational return migrants should be comprehended under specific temporal frameworks, which, in this paper, refer to transitional life stages. By investigating the post-return place-related emotions indicated by everyday food practices, this research contributes a more intricate understanding of the emotional worlds of transnational returnees and sheds light on the emotionality of transnational return migration. The present study investigated the expression of emotions in pupils of the first five grades of primary school. The sample (N = 114) comprised pupils aged between 6.5 and 10.6 years, whose expression of emotions was observed using an observational schema. Observations were gathered in classrooms at 70 schools in different regions of Slovenia. Fourteen emotions were recognized in the pupils' expressions, with joy and anger predominating. The intensity of the expression of positive and negative emotions, as well as basic and complex emotions, was moderate, and no significant difference in intensity was observed between these categories. Boys expressed more positive, negative and basic emotions than girls. The situations that elicited emotions varied and reflected the prominent issues in school, particularly academic achievement, social interactions with teachers and classmates, and activities during lessons. The applicability of the results to teachers' work in the classroom was highlighted. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Sociological debates on the mobilising force of imagined futures are particularly relevant in our present context of climate emergency, where the claim-making of a 'threatened future' has come to the fore in civic mobilisations worldwide. This article addresses these debates by empirically examining how adverse views of the future underpinning present thematisations of climate change as an emergency shape collective action. Based upon qualitative research conducted in Barcelona on new climate movements, I analyse the content and form of two imagined futures ('catastrophe' and 'collapse') that emerge from the ways in which participants of Extinction Rebellion and Fridays for Future engage with the future and climate. This analysis shows how these imagined futures are reflected in individual imaginations and processed by these movements, infusing different forms of agency and impacting trajectories of action in the present. This empirically grounded focus on imagined climate futures reveals that not only are cognitions of climate risks crucial, but so are the emotions that these produce in configuring collective action. Likewise, this study highlights how even disastrous imagined climate futures include utopian impulses for sustainable futures as both a driver and result of collective action. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article analyzes abortion experiences with misoprostol during the first decade of the 21st century in Argentina, before the legalization of the practice and the publication of the World Health Organization manuals on medication dosage. Based on in-depth interviews with women who underwent medical abortions during those years, we inquire about the mechanisms of information circulation and clandestine purchase of the drug. In addition, the article delves into experiences on the use of medication, confidence in the procedure, and the pain felt by these women from the theoretical perspective of the sociology of emotions. Among the most relevant findings is that women build networks and links to overcome the problems surrounding the practice of abortion because of the difficulty of obtaining the medication in the context of legality and illegality and the lack of information about the procedure itself and to develop a reliable method based on their own experiences. This article examines the emotional aspects of international student mobility (ISM) from African countries to a higher education institution in China. While there is increasing scholarly attention to the role of emotional experiences in ISM, most of this work has focused on Western destinations with a long history of education mobilities. Information on newly emerged, non-Western ISM destinations is comparatively limited. Drawing on ethnographic research of 15 months at a Chinese university, this article shows how emotions shape and re-shape pre-arrival aspirations, daily interactions, and post-graduation plans among students from African countries. Specifically, the study shows that many students confront emotional dissonance and perform diverse forms of ‘emotion work’ in attempts to find a sense of familiarity and belonging while studying abroad. This is significant as it speaks to students’ agentive subjectivity in contending with emotional challenges and navigating complex ‘emoscapes’. The paper argues that a focus on emotions contributes to a more nuanced, multifaceted understanding of contemporary educational mobilities. It illuminates how students’ multiple emotions are continuously articulated and circulated with and within these ISM flows apparently driven by economic forces in the global higher education market. Does anxiety affect how public officials process policy information? It is often argued that the increasing number of policy failures can be explained by a lack of policy learning by decision makers. While previous studies show that socioeconomic and partisan variables are related to the perception of policy information, little attention has been paid to the role of emotions, such as anxiety, in the policymaking process. In this paper, we investigate the impact of anxiety on the policy learning of local office holders at the individual level in Switzerland. We introduce the Marcus' Affective Intelligence Model—which examines how emotions affect individuals' information processing—to the policy learning literature. To test the expectations of the model, we draw on novel experimental data collected among local elected officials from the 26 Swiss cantons. In the experiment, we randomly display anxiety‐inducing images along with policy information. We provide evidence that anxiety has a positive causal effect on learning. Considering potential moderators of this effect, we show that the relationship is not conditioned by the strength of priors or the perceived complexity of public policies. However, these variables are substantially correlated with policy learning. Our findings have important implications for better understanding how information influences policymaking. Ceuta and Melilla are considered exemplary models of the border spectacle. The fences of these cities typify the notion of ‘Fortress Europe’ and impel the emotional engagement of the inhabitants with migration control policies. This article focuses on the experiences of local activists who have resisted migration containment policies. Through a close examination of the emotional geographies of activism in border areas, and the effect of migration policies on the everyday, this article aims to uncover the civic emotions underlying the lived realities of activists. Furthermore, by addressing the methodological challenges of investigating social emotions, this study integrates visual elicitation methods into ethnographic research. The evocative power of cinema allows films to act as visual stimuli that convey the intimate narratives of activists, which encompass compassion, outrage, or fatigue in the context of pro-migrant mobilization. By drawing on the mundane experiences of borders, this article delves into the intersection of emotions, activism, and borders to elucidate experiences against migration control. - Abstract
In Mexico, insecurity and fear of crime had been affected Mexican’s society historically. However, research has focused on comprehend the causes society attributes to both phenomena increasing and a little has been explored about the relationship those variables can have with concepts like social well-being. This study aims to know about the effect social well-being (and his dimensions), emotions (positive and negative) and negative perception of the world have on the fear of crime. A sample of 152 young students (55.3% women and 44.7% men) with a mean age of 25.56 years (SD= 3.30) participated in this research. Results showed that fear of crime has configurated as a problem itself and affects society in a differential way. Consequently, high levels of social well-being diminish worry about fear of crime. In opposition, high levels of negative perception of the world and of negative feelings, including low levels of social well-being and positive emotions promote higher levels of worry about fear of crime. - Abstract
Feminist foreign policy is analyzed in the speeches published on two international conflicts in some government accounts of Colombia, Spain, Argentina, and El Salvador. To do so, a statistical analysis of the discourse and categorization of emotions was used in more than 2000 messages on the social network X. Colombia and Spain show a more significant commitment to the multilateral agenda and use characteristics of a feminist foreign policy. However, they approach the conflicts of Russia-Ukraine (Spain) and Palestine-Israel (Colombia) differently. Regarding the emotional tone, negative emotions (hatred, distrust, anger) predominate --particularly in Colombia-- and in the case of positive emotions, trust --predominantly in Colombia and El Salvador--. The implications of the findings for adopting feminist foreign policy are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

DIGITAL technology , *NEUROPLASTICITY , *SOCIAL space , *SOCIAL structure , *SOCIAL context - Abstract
Emotions are physiological, cognitive and behavioral reactions that allow us to adapt to our environment. The increase in the complexity of the social structure during our development as a species modified the emotional requirements necessary to favor the survival of the individual and the group. Responses to the demands of the environment were more flexible and controlled to face dangers that were not immediate but were projected into the future and needed to be foreseen and addressed in the present. Once the current structure of our brain was shaped, neural plasticity allowed for an appropriate adjustment of the subject's behaviors, cognitions and emotions to an ever-changing physical and social environment. However, the digital world poses a new evolutionary challenge, because it has modified the time and space parameters of social interactions. This could be a new requirement of the environment, necessary for our evolution as a species. Being optimistic, we can think that we will manage to adapt, but it will be necessary to protect ourselves into the future and see what changes we must make in the present. These changes must start with an adequate knowledge of the process of the construction of emotions in the natural world, to be able to replicate it with guarantees in the digital world. This article analyzes the association between emotions and electoral participation. It asks which encourages or inhibits the vote and whether or not they play the same role in different age groups. To address these questions, we use the results of a survey conducted in Chile during the 2017 elections. It is argued, first, that among the general population, fear and optimism play a role in the decision of the vote. Second, in young people’s case, these emotions play an even more significant role. Third, anger is not related to the decision to vote. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective/context: The objective pursued by this research is to analyse the possible existence of a social and political fracture around the figure of former President Rafael Correa and his political legacy, the Citizen Revolution, which would act as a kind of polarizing division of Ecuadorian society: correismo/anti-correismo axis. A division that, born of politics, would have been established within society, allowing the existence of two opposing sides that feel, perceive and act in politics in a very different way. Methodology: To this end, a study has been drawn up with a quantitative methodological approach based on an analysis of the data contained in the Study of Politics and Emotions in Ecuador, March 2021 (SPEE), carried out by the EIP-USC after the first round of the 2021 presidential elections. Conclusions: The results of this first approach (descriptive and multivariate) allow us to affirm the existence of important differences between supporters and detractors of correismo, especially as regards political and emotional issues, but not so regarding sociodemographic issues. Originality: The influence that the emotional factor expressed towards the different political leaders would have in the construction of this fracture is especially relevant; providing a novel vision to the literature on the influence of Rafael Correa and his project in the Ecuadorian political system. While emotions are an inherent component of the human experience that influence behavior, values, and beliefs, they have largely been left out of policy process studies theoretically and methodologically. Using the Advocacy Coalition Framework (ACF), with its focus on how individuals coalesce into coalitions around a set of common beliefs, we begin to situate emotions as a critical component of belief systems and discourse about public policies. This study analyzes legislative testimony from four policies debated during the 2021 Colorado Legislative Session using discourse analysis to identify the emotions and coalitional beliefs. We find that policy actors express emotions and beliefs similarly to other policy actors in the same coalition and differently from policy actors in the opposing coalition. We conclude this paper by discussing the theoretical and methodological contributions of including emotions in the ACF. The move to incorporate the analysis of emotional expressions, and hence the study of affect, into the ACF mirrors the ongoing incorporation of how people feel in politics and not just how they think. The article presents a general, though not exhaustive, overview of the notion of care and its presence and relevance in gender historiography, examining how historical research can inform and shape new discussions. A bibliographic and narrative review methodology is used, comparing selected studies based on their contributions and scope. Given that care is a transdisciplinary issue with significant heuristic potential, both historical topics and those from other branches of the humanities and social sciences are considered. Care is understood here both as an affective and a labor disposition, and it is from these dimensions that the main debates and problems are presented, focusing specifically on those that have had the greatest presence in gender and history studies: domestic work, feminized professions that care for others, affective communities, and maternal love. In the context of the current care crisis, it is concluded that the topic needs to be viewed broadly and its contributions revalued from a critical gender theory perspective, also considering a historiographic perspective sensitive to contexts and capable of interpretive flexibility. The article focuses on the main academic discussions held in North America and European countries, aiming to contribute to understanding the theoretical and applied scope of care and acknowledging that there is still much ground to cover. The conclusions offer an overview of the thematic lines and theoretical assumptions that could enrich future historiographical research agendas on care. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
