The pervasive presence of nanoplastics (NPs) in the environment has gained increasing attention due to their accumulation in living organisms. These emerging contaminants inevitably interact with extracellular polymeric substances along respiratory or gastrointestinal tracts, and diverse organic coating on the surface of NPs, known as bio- or eco-corona, is formed. Although its impact on altering the NP properties and potential cell internalization has been extensively examined, studies on its role in NP partitioning in the cell membrane are elusive yet. In this work, molecular dynamics is used to investigate the formation of chitosan (CT) corona centered on a polyvinyl chloride (PVC) nanoparticle and the uptake of the resulting complex onto lipid membranes. Coarse-grained models compatible with the newly developed Martini 3.0 force field are implemented for the two polymers employing the atomistic properties as targets in the parameterization. The reliability of the coarse-grained polymer models is demonstrated by reproducing the structural properties of the PVC melt and of solvated CT strands, as well as by determining the conformation adopted by the latter at the NP surface. Results show that the spontaneous binding of CT chains of high and intermediate protonation degrees led to the formation of soft and hard corona that modulates the interaction of PVC core with model membranes. The structural changes of the corona adsorbed at the lipid–water interface enable a subsequent transfer of the NP to the center of the saturated lipid membranes and a complete or partial transition to a snorkel conformation depending on the hydrophilic/hydrophobic balance in the CT–PVC complex. Overall, the computational investigation of the coarse-grained model system provides implications for understanding how the eco-corona development influences the uptake and implicit toxicology of NPs. Emerging contaminants (EC) distributed on surfaces in the environment can be oxidized by gas phase species (top-down) or by oxidants generated by the underlying substrate (bottom-up). One class of EC is the neonicotinoid (NN) pesticides that are widely distributed in air, water, and on plant and soil surfaces as well as on airborne dust and building materials. This study investigates the OH oxidation of the systemic NN pesticide acetamiprid (ACM) at room temperature. ACM on particles and as thin films on solid substrates were oxidized by OH radicals either from the gas phase or from an underlying TiO2 or NaNO2 substrate, and for comparison, in the aqueous phase. The site of OH attack is both the secondary >CH2 group as well as the primary -CH3 group attached to the tertiary amine nitrogen, with the latter dominating. In the case of top-down oxidation of ACM by gas phase OH radicals, addition to the -CN group also occurs. Major products are carbonyls and alcohols, but in the presence of sufficient water, their hydrolyzed products dominate. Kinetics measurements show ACM is more reactive toward gas phase OH radicals than other NN nitroguanidines, with an atmospheric lifetime of a few days. Bottom-up oxidation of ACM on TiO2 exposed to sunlight outdoors (temperatures were above 30 °C) was also shown to occur and is likely to be competitive with top-down oxidation. These findings highlight the different potential oxidation processes for EC and provide key data for assessing their environmental fates and toxicologies.

Modern gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC–MS) allows for the analysis of complex samples, such as fragrances. However, identifying all the constituents in natural fragrance mixtures, especially allergens that need to be listed on product labels, is a significant challenge. This is primarily due to the high complexity of the sample and the fact that electron ionization, the most commonly used ionization method in GC–MS, produces numerous nonspecific fragment ions, often resulting in the absence or very low abundance of the molecular ion. These factors affect confidence in assigning the analyte. In this study, we demonstrate that the combination of GC × GC separation, with high mass resolution and accurate mass measurements, as well as chemical ionization in addition to traditional electron ionization, becomes an efficient tool for reliable qualitative analysis of a mixture containing 100 fragrance allergens, even when many of them are closely related species or isomers. The proposed approach expands the applicability of the comprehensive GC × GC-HRMS method, which includes complementary ionization techniques, from studies on anthropogenic priority pollutants and emerging contaminants to the analysis of natural products. Although targeted qualitative and quantitative analysis of allergens in the modern laboratories is well organized, GC × GC-HRMS, being a useful complement to routine quality control of volatile allergens in fragrances, definitely gives an additional contribution to the analytical cases when conventional 1D-GC–MS faces some problems or uncertainties. Large amount of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastics waster and emerging contaminants in water, including fluoroquinolone antibiotics, pose challenges to human survival. In this work, a green synthesis scheme is proposed in which the defective UiO-66 (d -UiO-66) is fabricated via a solvent-free routine by using PET plastics waster as raw materials for lomefloxacin (LOM) removal. In comparison with defect-free UiO-66, the created defect imparts d -UiO-66 with higher porosity and abundant defective Zr sites, which are beneficial to boost LOM adsorption. As expected, d -UiO-66 exhibited excellent LOM adsorption performances, showcasing a saturation adsorption capacity of 588 mg g−1 and a kinetic rate constant of 0.204 g mg−1 h−1, which are 3.5 and 2.0 times higher than those of the pristine UiO-66, respectively. Remarkably, the LOM saturation adsorption capacity of d -UiO-66 surpasses that of all reported adsorbents. Mechanism study reveals that this outstanding adsorption performance of d -UiO-66 is mainly ascribed to the abundant defective sites, high porosity, together with the strong hydrogen bonding interaction and π-π stacking interaction between d -UiO-66 and LOM. Therefore, the d -UiO-66 obtained by the solvent-free method can not only effectively upcycle PET plastic waster, but also efficiently remove LOM, demonstrating a potential routine to simultaneous address the solid PET waster and wastewater. AbstractEmerging contaminants (ECs) have become a significant threat to the aquatic environment due to their persistence and potential to harm living organisms exposed to them over extended periods. The identification of a broad range of ECs in various water bodies has accelerated research into their harmful effects and removal methods. The presence and durability of ECs, such as endocrine-disrupting substances, personal care products, pharmaceuticals, and their transformation products pose important environmental and health challenges. Traditional wastewater treatment processes often fail to eliminate ECs due to their ability to form hazardous derivatives, complexes, dynamic partitioning, and transformation products. Membrane processes have become increasingly important in pollution control, as their performance has been proven from technological, economic, energy, and environmental perspectives. This review article aims to provide a comprehensive summary of the origins and effects of ECs on humans and the environment. It discusses various membrane technologies for the efficient and ecologically responsible removal of emerging pollutants from wastewater. Reverse Osmosis (RO), Microfiltration (MF), Ultrafiltration (UF), and Nanofiltration (NF) membranes demonstrated outstanding removal efficiency for a variety of ECs; nevertheless, both methods are hindered by fouling problems. The paper highlights the methods used by hybrid membrane technology to eliminate emerging pollutants. Additionally, the use of ceramic membrane technology in removing emerging pollutants has been investigated. Ceramic membrane technology is particularly appealing due to its inherent benefits, such as chemical and thermal stability, low fouling propensity, and extended lifespan. The widespread presence of microplastics (MPs) in freshwater systems as an emerging environmental pollutant has caused a global environmental problem. The present study investigates the distribution and abundance of source pathway and abundance of microplastics in surface sediment samples from rivers discharging into the Gorgan Bay, southeast of the Caspian Sea. A total of 57 surface sediment samples were taken from 19 stations to investigate the potential hot spots of pollution in the four rivers leading to the Gorgan Bay. The average level of microplastics was 333 ± 268 particles/kg. The highest amount is in the estuary of the Qarasu River (1080 ± 380 particles/kg) due to the accumulation of fishing, boating and tourism activities and the lowest amount in the forest area (80 ± 19 particles/kg) in the Klak River. The most common type of microplastic was fiber (68%). Microplastic pollution in the studied rivers is mostly black and gray (75.39%), and about 53% of them were sized less than 1000 μm. Spectroscopic analysis (Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) of the MP showed that 37% were polyethylene, polyethylene (37%) and polypropylene (27%) were the dominating groups. The sediments’ size was significantly correlated (p>0.05) with the presence of microplastics. Sediments with a coarse grain (sand) demonstrated a great potential to store microplastics. Freshwater biodiversity loss is accelerating globally, but humanity can change this trajectory through actions that enable recovery. To be successful, these actions require coordination and planning at a global scale. The Emergency Recovery Plan for global freshwater biodiversity aims to reduce the risk for freshwater biodiversity loss through six priority actions: (1) accelerate implementation of environmental flows; (2) improve water quality to sustain aquatic life; (3) protect and restore critical habitats; (4) manage exploitation of freshwater species and riverine aggregates; (5) prevent and control nonnative species invasions in freshwater habitats; and (6) safeguard and restore freshwater connectivity. These actions can be implemented using future-proofing approaches that anticipate future risks (e.g., emerging pollutants, new invaders, and synergistic effects) and minimize likely stressors to make conservation of freshwater biodiversity more resilient to climate change and other global environmental challenges. While uncertainty with respect to past observations is not a new concern for freshwater biodiversity, future-proofing has the distinction of accounting for the uncertainty of future conditions that have no historical baseline. The level of uncertainty with respect to future conditions is unprecedented. Future-proofing of the Emergency Recovery Plan for freshwater biodiversity will require anticipating future changes and developing and implementing actions to address those future changes. Here, we showcase future-proofing approaches likely to be successful using local case studies and examples. Ensuring that response options within the Emergency Recovery Plan are future-proofed will provide decision makers with science-informed choices, even in the face of uncertain and potentially new future conditions. Aquatic insects serve as vital inter‐habitat linkages between aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems, as their life cycle includes both aquatic and terrestrial stages. They facilitate the flow of energy and nutrients and play an important role in the transport of waterborne contaminants to terrestrial environments. This study focused on the under‐investigated environmental fate of emerging contaminants (ECs), particularly pharmaceuticals (PhACs) and endocrine‐disrupting compounds (EDCs), which originate from wastewater effluents and accumulate in aquatic insects.Using an in situ study of a highly abundant caddisfly species (Trichoptera), Silo nigricornis (Pictet, 1834), inhabiting a wastewater‐impacted drainage ditch, we examined the bioaccumulation and bioamplification of PhACs and EDCs across the aquatic and terrestrial life stages of the caddisfly.We observed variations in the highest concentrations of PhACs and EDCs in different sample types, including water, biofilm and different life stages of S. nigricornis. Adult S. nigricornis exhibited the highest total concentrations of ECs among the different life stages, with 17 different ECs bioaccumulated in caddisfly tissues. Most of these ECs had higher concentrations in terrestrial adults compared to aquatic larvae and pupae. The total concentration of ECs increased significantly with development, revealing a 41% higher concentration in adult terrestrial caddisflies compared to pupae and larvae.Bioamplification factors provided insights into the increased body burden of the majority of compounds during at least one stage of metamorphosis in S. nigricornis. Evidence of bioamplification was observed in both metamorphosis stages, with certain compounds, such as antibiotics (azithromycin and tilmicosin), endocrine disruptors (TCPP – tris[1‐chloro‐2‐propyl]phosphate and parabens; methylparaben, propylparaben), consistently exhibiting increased concentrations from larval to pupal and from pupal to adult stages. The observed pattern of increasing body burden of contaminants during the caddisfly life cycle emphasises the effects of metamorphosis on the concentration of PhACs and EDCs in adult holometabolous aquatic insects.Our results emphasise the importance of adult caddisflies for the transport of waterborne contaminants such as PhACs and EDCs from aquatic to terrestrial environments. Therefore, our results emphasise the need to include adult trichopterans in the assessment of habitat quality, as their influence extends beyond the boundaries of the aquatic ecosystem. Due to rapid economic development and urbanization, water pollution has posed a significant threat to public health and social stability. Therefore, accurate and rapid monitoring of water quality becomes particularly important and significant. As an environmentally friendly, nondestructive and efficient detection technology, spectral analysis technology provides an effective tool for qualitative analysis and quantitative detection of pollutants in water environment. In this paper, the principle of UV-Vis spectroscopy and near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy and their application in water quality detection are studied. UV-Vis and NIR spectroscopy techniques for the detection of many kinds of water quality parameters are discussed according to the classification of chemical oxygen demand, organic matter, microbial pollutants, heavy metals and emerging pollutants. The information of light source in spectroscopy measurement and the algorithms used in spectral data processing are summarized. There is an increasing attention for using compost in remediation of heavy metals, textile dyes and emerging contaminants. In this work, the competitive uptake of two weakly interacting dyes, Direct Blue 71 and Direct Blue 151, by compost is examined. The optimum uptake of both dyes in single and bi-solute systems is achieved at pH 3.0, 240 min equilibrium time, 25 °C, and a relatively high compost dose 3.0 g L−1. Using Langmuir model, the maximum individual uptake of dyes by compost is 117.5 and 102.5 mg g−1 for DB151 and DB71, respectively. These values, estimated from their single-solute solution, were used to assess their overall competition under batch and fixed bed conditions. Under batch conditions, both dyes are removed from bi-solute solutions with higher competition for DB151 against DB71. The estimated competitive factors were 0.70 and 0.80 for DB71 and DB151, respectively. With a combined uptake capacity of 162 mg g−1 for both dyes, the performance of compost is promising. The fixed bed uptake of dyes indicated 80% utilization of compost capacity for single-solute solutions, at bed-depth 20 cm, flow rate 10 mL min−1 and inlet concentration 150 mg L−1. However, dyes adsorption under dynamic conditions is making only 40 and 60% of the maximum capacity of DB71 and DB151, respectively. The incomplete utilization is attributed to the fact that dynamic conditions are not as favorable to reach equilibrium as the batch process. The relative efficacy factor rexp was then used to select the optimum treatment process. From single and bi-solute solutions, dyes are effectively removed by fixed bed adsorption as rexp < 1.0, however, batch process is recommended to remove DB71 in the presence of DB151 as rexp > 1.0. Fluoroquinolone antibiotics are pseudo-persistence in aquatic environments as emerging contaminants. In this study, the Shitoukoumen Reservoir and its four inflow rivers were selected as a typical river-reservoir system. The factors, including river input, rainfall, flow regulation, population, antibiotic half-life, and antibiotic emission path were investigated to find out the reasons for antibiotic variations in the river-reservoir system during the reservoir discharge and filling periods. The results showed that ofloxacin was the most prevalent antibiotic in both the reservoir and inflow-river water, with median concentrations of 18.6 ± 2.4 and 39.7 ± 6.2 ng L−1, respectively. The concentrations of enrofloxacin, norfloxacin, and ofloxacin in the reservoir fluctuated during the reservoir discharge and filling periods. Enrofloxacin was only detected in the reservoir during the discharge period due to its input from the inflow rivers. Artificial reservoir discharge decreased the dissolved concentrations of norfloxacin and ofloxacin in the reservoir, whereas reservoir filling increased their accumulation. The Shuangyang, Yinma, and Chalu Rivers contributed relatively high individual antibiotic mass loads to the reservoir, ranging from 66.7% to 100%. Antibiotic-containing waste runoff during rainfall events increased input contributions of antibiotics from the Shuangyang and Chalu Rivers. The risk assessments indicated that norfloxacin posed a high risk to the most sensitive algae and therefore required greater attention. The study provides a comprehensive insight into fluoroquinolone antibiotic residues in the river-reservoir system during the periods of reservoir discharge and filling, and is of importance for their future monitoring and management. The worldwide pesticide marketplace was approximate 85 billion dollars in 2019, growing at a geometric progression rate of 4.2% from 2015, and by 2023 it is projected to grow at a rate of 11.5% to approximately 130.7 billion dollars. Pesticides' uniqueness is defined by the distinctiveness of their chemistry and their relationship with the environment. Pesticide mobility and bioavailability in water bodies are determined by their desorption and absorption processes from soil particles. Waterbodies are severely affected with the build-up of these poisonous impurities with its imbalance in pH and accumulation of heavy metals, which adversely distress the aquatic ecology in the waterbodies. Pesticides are not only damaging to the ecology of the waterbodies; it is also consequentially harmful to humans. It causes gastrointestinal disorders, cardiac and respiratory issues, and even affects the biotic molecules and organs subsequently leading to acute and/or chronic illnesses. This article reviews 200 scientific literatures for existence of pesticides in drinking water and the various remediation technologies available for the treatment to render the water potable. Microalgae represent an alternative to conventional wastewater treatment, potentially improving antibiotic removal and offering a solution to combat the spread of antimicrobial resistance. Through batch assays, this study investigates the routes for antibiotic removal using three strains (Chlamydomonas acidophila, Auxhenochlorella protothecoides and Tetradesmus obliquus). Using mixtures of ciprofloxacin, clarithromycin, erythromycin, metronidazole, ofloxacin, sulfamethoxazole, and trimethoprim at concentrations simulating wastewater composition, it also assesses antibiotic effects on microalgae physiology. The three strains primarily removed antibiotics through rapid biosorption, achieving up to 91.5% removal for specific ones like ciprofloxacin. T. obliquus and C. acidophila showed efficacy, with total removals of 37.2% and 49.3%, respectively. Over time, A. protothecoides demonstrated the highest active removal efficiency, eliminating 22.1% of total antibiotics, with a notable 67.6% removal for sulfamethoxazole. Abiotic degradation through hydrolysis and photolysis contributed to ciprofloxacin, ofloxacin, clarithromycin, and erythromycin removal (34.7% to 96.7%), showing pH-dependent photolysis. However, algae induced a shading effect, reducing the photolytic and hydrolytic degradation of specific antibiotics. T. obliquus and C. acidophila were inhibited by antibiotics, whereas A. protothecoides showed a 30.6% growth rate increase. The stimulatory effect was also observed for the nutrient removal, with A. protothecoides showing a 46.6% increase in ammonium removal and a 44.8% increase in phosphate removal with antibiotics. Additionally, antioxidant activities remained stable, except for a notable increase in peroxidase activity for A. protothecoides and T. obliquus. The study confirms efficient antibiotic removal and stimulatory responses in the three algal strains, indicating their potential for wastewater treatment and combating antimicrobial resistance. Urban soil and water contamination by xenobiotics is an increasing hazard to ecosystem health and human well-being. Xenobiotics including synthetic chemicals and contaminants from industrial, agricultural, and urban activities are renowned for accumulating in the environment. As urbanization expands, the detrimental impacts of xenobiotics on ecosystems and public health will intensify, making it more necessary than ever to learn about and implement appropriate remediation methods. This review article is focused on diverse categories of xenobiotics, their health impacts, and a range of xenobiotic removal methods from urban soils and water sources. We also explored extensive literature based on established and novel technological and natural approaches, spanning the physical, chemical, and biological sciences. Physicochemical methods including soil cleaning, electrokinetics, and adsorption may decontaminate xenobiotic-contaminated sites. Bioremediation using bacteria and plants degrades and detoxifies several xenobiotics. Advanced oxidation methods can also degrade persistent water pollutants very effectively. Nanoremediation, phytoremediation, and microbial-assisted remediation are some of the emerging technologies that effectively remove persistent pollutants and preserve ecological balance. Nature-based solutions like artificial wetlands and biofiltration can lessen xenobiotic impacts and sustainably increase urban ecosystem services. These methods have been tested in several urban locations. We also explored the hybrid approaches for the removal of xenobiotics and secondary pollution. A combination of techniques may be effective for efficient cleanup thereby promoting sustainable cleanup solutions for urban expansion and safeguarding the environment and residents from emerging contaminants. Microplastics (MPs) are emerging pollutants, and they can absorb and transfer chemicals, which may cause significant effects on biota and risks to human health. State parks are natural areas highly influenced by seasonal tourist activities. This study investigated the distribution and characterization of MPs, including abundance, size, shape, and color, in seven Virginia State Parks within the James River Watershed (Douthat, Natural Bridge, Holliday Lake, James River, Powhatan, Pocahontas, and Chippokes Plantation State Parks). The MP concentration among the seven locations in the watershed had a significant difference (p < 0.05) and ranged from 0–26.5 particles/L with a mean of 8.33 ± 1.39 particles/L. The mountain region water bodies (Douthat and Natural Bridge) had the lowest MP concentration (< 4 particles/L), while the mainstream water bodies had a significantly higher MP concentration than other water bodies (10–20 particles/L) (p < 0.01). The size, shape, and color of MPs were also significantly different among all locations (p < 0.05). Faded and aged fragments with sizes below 1 mm were the most abundant, suggesting that terrestrial MPs were the most influencing source at most of the State Parks, and weathering effects have played a significant role in the fragmentation of plastics. In addition, a significantly positive relationship between MP concentration and the fraction of overnight guests was found (p < 0.0001). Our study indicated that State Parks and protected areas are polluted by MPs, which may pose potential harm to the surrounding environment, including both wildlife and humans. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Microplastics (MPs), which are emerging pollutants in terrestrial ecosystems, could potentially impact plant growth. One of the least explored aspects of crop development is seed germination, a crucial stage in the plant's lifecycle. This study conducted soil cultivation trials to investigate the effects of 1% (w/w) concentrations of polyethylene (PET), polypropylene (PP), and polystyrene (PS) MPs on rice growth over a 15‐day period. Parameters such as fresh weight, shoot height, root length, chlorophyll levels, and MPs identification in the roots were observed. The findings revealed the accumulation of 6–9 MP items in the roots. PET MPs inhibited root elongation (15%–20%), reduced shoot height (15%–30%), and decreased rice fresh weight (12%–37%). MPs PET, PP, and PS contamination reduced the content of chlorophyll a (15%–43%), b (21%–41%), and total (11%–40%) in rice leaves. This study enhances our understanding of the ecotoxicological effects of these three types of MPs on rice. This review examined the global issue of endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs) in drinking water, including their sources, health effects, and the efficacy of advanced treatment technologies like biodegradation and photocatalytic degradation, using case studies. Recently, endocrine disrupting substances or disruptors in drinking water have become a global issue. Emerging pollutants including endocrine disrupting chemicals can enter the body through water drinking. Endocrine disruptors affect gene expression and damage the endocrine system, harming humans, wildlife, and the environment. Pesticides, detergents and surfactants, plasticizers, industrial compounds, medicines, natural plant derivatives, and heavy metals are endocrine disruptive compounds in water. These endocrine disrupting substances enter raw water bodies by untreated and treated wastewater discharges, runoff, and leachate. However, the convectional drinking water treatment facility cannot cleanse and process endocrine disruptive substances from raw water intakes, resulting in inefficient eliminations and health risks. Mechanisms, benefits, and drawbacks of new water treatment technologies such biodegradation, photocatalytic degradation, and oxidation for endocrine disruptive chemicals are reviewed. Esomeprazole (ESO) is one of the proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) that is commonly used to treat extreme acidity and gastrointestinal irritation. Since it is used at a high rate, it is now classified as a pollutant of emerging concern (CEC). ESO gravely jeopardizes the health of living beings because it persists in water and wastewater sources even after standard treatment. Studies on the effective removal of PPIs, especially ESO, are scarce. In the current study, esomeprazole is disintegrated in water using electrochemical oxidation (EO). Titanium cathode with sodium sulfate electrolyte and carbon coated titanium (C/Ti) anode were used to apply EO. Through optimization studies utilizing COD measurement, it was discovered that 93% of the COD could be removed at pH 3, 60 mM sodium sulfate concentration, 300 min treatment period, and 115 mA cm−2 current density. Pyrolysis is a promising alternative for the removal or immobilization of hazardous elements in sewage sludge (SS) without compromising its biofertilizer features. However, the effects of pyrolysis on SS emerging contaminants have not been fully investigated. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the fate of heavy metals, pesticides, and organic pollutants in SS through pyrolysis, as well as the suitability of SS and its derived biochar (SSB) for soil application. Municipal SS was pyrolyzed at different scales (bench and micro units) and temperatures (400, 500, and 600°C) for comparison. The general properties, surface morphology, and functional groups of SS and SSB were analyzed. Also, a quantitative analysis of heavy metals (Zn, Cu, Cr, Ni, Cd, and Pb) and a qualitative investigation of organic pollutants and pesticides were performed. The results demonstrated that pyrolysis at 400°C increased the stability of SS and strongly affected its surface area, resulting in a high pore structure with a developed surface charge. Simultaneously, the relative content of organic matter and nutrients remained nearly unchanged. All heavy metals analyzed in SS and SSB400 were within limits set by the International Biochar Initiative for soil application. Moreover, organic pollutants and pesticides were detected in the SS but were partially degraded or immobilized after pyrolysis > 400°C. The reuse of biomass waste has been gaining attention in adsorption processes to remove pollutants of emerging concern from water and wastewater. In this work, the potential of alginate-extracted macro-algae waste to uptake synthetic dyes and metal cations was evaluated in comparison with raw algae. In affinity assays, both materials were able to remove metal cations and cationic dyes up to maximum rates, and no significant removal was observed for an anionic dye in an acidic medium. Competition was observed in multi-component systems of metal cations and dyes. For binary samples containing organic and inorganic contaminants, kinetic modeling evidenced the distinct nature of both types of adsorbates. Pb(II) biosorption was best described as a first-order process, while second-order and Elovich models better fitted methyl blue (MB) uptake data. For equimolar binary samples, the Sips isothermal model fitted the experimental data more satisfactorily at room temperature. Isotherms for 20, 30, 40, and 60 °C exhibited favorable adsorption profiles with spontaneous ΔG values for both raw macro-algae and waste from alginate extraction. Maximum adsorption capacities were competitive with previous reports in the literature for a wide range of biomaterials, pointing to the slightly higher efficiency with algae waste in batch experiments. In elution tests, HNO3 (0.5 M) showed the best recovery rates of metal cations. Continuous biosorption operation revealed the performance of the brown algae waste was considerably more efficient than raw algae with breakthrough biosorption capacities up to 3.96 and 0.97 mmol.g−1 for the removal of Pb(II) and MB, respectively. A total of 3.0 g of algae and algae waste were able to deliver 1.20 and 1.62 L of contaminant-free water, respectively. AbstractCiprofloxacin is used for curing infectious diseases and its residue pollutes the biosphere. We prepared coal-based activated carbon and characterized it by FTIR, SEM, BET, zeta potential, TGA and XRD. Its surface area is (3472 m2 g−1), pore volume (1.568 cm3 g−1) and pore size (1.808 nm) and disordered graphitic nature. The material removed ∼100% ciprofloxacin from aqueous solutions in 35 min. The adsorption data follows Langmuir, Freundlich, D-R and Temkin isotherms and a pseudo second-order kinetic model. The adsorption capacity of the material computed is 724.3 ± 23.5 mg g−1. Thermodynamic parameters (ΔS = 16.536 ± 0.397 J mol−1 K−1, ΔH = 560 ± 8.65 kJ mol−1 and ΔG = −27.916 ± 0.45 kJ mol−1 and) describes feasible, endothermic and spontaneous nature of adsorption. Regeneration studies demonstrated that the material is effective for up to six cycles. The material is very effective in real water samples. Computational results i.e. decrease in band gap (Eg = 1.735, 1.717 and 1.698 eV), EHOMO (−4.446, −4.677 and −4.431 eV), ELUMO (−2.710, −2.978 and −2.714 eV) and charge transfer phenomenon (Q = −0.2, −0.069 and −0.057) demonstrates hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interaction mechanisms. Au@Ag core--shell composites were successfully fabricated on urchinlike covalent organic frameworks (COFs), providing a platform with numerous hot spots for the detection of two categories of emerging contaminants: sulfonamide antibiotics and nanoplastics, using surfaceenhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). Au seeds (~10 nm) were generated on the COFs, leveraging the reducing properties of the vinyl and imino groups within the framework. This ensured the growth of dense and uniformly distributed Ag nanoparticles. The COFs exceptionally large surface area (2324 m² g-1) and high adsorption capacity, significantly contributed to the enrichment and detection of trace pollutants. Owing to their capability to produce reactive oxygen species (ROS) under solar irradiation, covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with pre-designable structure and unique architectures show great potentials for water purification. However, the sluggish charge separation, inefficient oxygen activation and poor structure stability in COFs restrict their practical applications to decontaminate water. Herein, via a facile one-pot synthetic strategy, we show the direct conversion of reversible imine linkage into rigid thiazole linkage can adjust the π-conjugation and local charge polarization of skeleton to boost the exciton dissociation on COFs. The rigid linkage can also improve the robustness of skeleton and the stability of COFs during the consecutive utilization process. More importantly, the thiazole linkage in COFs with optimal C 2p states (COF-S) effectively increases the activities of neighboring benzene unit to directly modulate the O2-adsorption energy barrier and improve the ROS production efficiency, resulting in the excellent photocatalytic degradation efficiency of seven toxic emerging contaminants (e.g. degrading ~99% of 5 mg L−1 paracetamol in only 7 min) and effective bacterial/algal inactivation performance. Besides, COF-S can be immobilized in continuous-flow reactor and in enlarged reactor to efficiently eliminate pollutants under natural sunlight irradiation, demonstrating the feasibility for practical application. Linking COFs by rigid thiazole linkages can simultaneously enhance the stability, charge separation efficiency, and oxygen activation capability of COFs, resulting in the excellent photocatalytic degradation performance towards micropollutants in water. Introduction: Emerging contaminants in irrigation wastewater can cause bioaccumulation in crops, posing health risks to humans and other living organisms. The extent to which different emerging contaminants (ECs) are taken up by plants varies depending on the physicochemical properties of the contaminants and the type of crops grown. Methods: This study investigated the fate of emerging contaminants (ECs), particularly pharmaceuticals, in durum wheat grown on soils irrigated with treated wastewater in southern Italy. The experiment was conducted in lysimeters irrigated with wastewater during previous crop cycles, assessing the presence and distribution of ECs in both soil and plant tissues. Three different levels of exposure to ECs were compared: freshwater irrigation (FW), wastewater treated to European average contaminant levels (TWWx1), and a triple dose of contaminants (TWWx3). Results: The behavior of 12 different ECs in the plant-soil complex was analyzed and found variable. Fluconazole and carbamazepine were found to have higher uptake concentrations in the plant, with accumulation observed in the plant and grain, especially in the TWWx3 treatment. However, some ECs (such as Sulfamethoxazole, Trimethoprim, Ketoprofen, Diclofenac, Metoprolol, and Naproxen) showed high uncertainties in their fate, probably due to degradation in soil and influential crop parameters. Discussion: The results of this study contribute to the argument that the reuse of treated wastewater for irrigation, if properly monitored, can be a safe approach in agriculture and can support policymakers in developing future legislative frameworks for sustainable water management. Ciprofloxacin (CIP) is the commonly prescribed fluoroquinolone antibiotic and one of the top ten emerging pharmaceutical contaminants in the world. It can pose a potential health risk if its residues enter the body. In this study, the adsorption of CIP onto magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles coated with silver (Fe3O4@AgNPs) was evaluated. Fe3O4@AgNPs were characterized by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), X‐ray Diffraction (XRD), and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). The parameters affecting the adsorption of CIP on nanoadsorbent were investigated including the adsorbent dose, pH, contact time, the salt content, and mixing speed. The highest efficiency of removal was achieved at pH 6, adsorbent dose of 3 mg l−1, salt content of 1 % (W/V) and shaking rate of 100 rpm. The adsorption process of CIP on the nanoadsorbent followed the Freundlich adsorption isotherm model, the adsorption kinetics was pseudo‐second order and the maximum adsorption capacity was 125 mg g−1. Microplastics (MPs) are emerging persistent pollutants, and heavy metals are typical environmental pollutants, with their coexistence potentially compounding pollution and ecological risks. However, the interactive impacts and the relevant mechanisms of heavy metal and different types of MPs in plant-soil systems are still unclear. This study investigated the differential impacts of polyethylene MPs (PE MPs) and biodegradable polybutylene adipate MPs (PBAT MPs) on chromium (Cr) uptake in peanuts, focusing on plant performance and rhizosphere soil microenvironment. Compared with nondegradable PE-MPs, biodegradable PBAT MPs produced less significant influences on plant phytotoxicity, soil Cr bioavailability, and soil properties such as pH, CEC, DOC, and MBC, with the exception of MBN in Cr-contaminated soils. Compared to the control, soil pH and cation exchange capacity (CEC) decreased by MPs, while soil-soluble carbon (DOC), microbial biomass carbon, and nitrogen (MBC and MBN) increased by MPs. Compared to the control, soil-bioavailable Cr increased by 11.8–177.8% under PE MPs treatments, while increased by 5.1–156.9% under PBAT MPs treatments. The highest Cr content in shoots and roots was observed at 500.0 mg·kg−1 Cr level, which increased by 53.1% and 79.2% under 5% PE MPs treatments, respectively, as well as increased by 38.3% and 60.4% under 5% PBAT MPs treatments, respectively, compared with the control. The regression path analysis indicated that pH, MBC, MBN, and soil-bioavailable Cr played a vital role in the changes of soil properties and Cr uptake by peanuts induced by MPs. Soil bacterial community analysis revealed that Nocardioides, Proteobacteria, and Sphingomonas were reduced by the inhibition of MPs, which affected Cr uptake by peanuts. Introduction: The presence of pharmaceuticals and personal care products in environmental matrices is considered one of the major scientific concerns. Most of these substances are disposed of unchanged through wastewater treatment plants and sewage systems. Consequently, they are continuously introduced into the water systems and progressively contaminate surface, ground and drinking water. During the COVID-19 pandemic, a large number of emerging contaminants including parabens were released to the environment through various routes. In this study, the occurrence of parabens (methylparaben (MePB), ethylparaben (EtPB), propylparaben (PrPB), and butylparaben (BuPB) was investigated in wastewater samples from various wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) and the receiving surface waters in KwaZulu Natal and Gauteng Provinces (South Africa). Methods: The samples were collected between October 2020 and December 2021, covering the 2nd, 3rd and 4th waves of the COVID-19 pandemic. A solid phase extraction protocol with high-performance liquid chromatography was used to extract and enrich parabens before analysis. Results and Discussion: Methylparaben (2.02-84.7 μg/L), EtPB (<0.24-24.8 μg/L), PrPB (<0.26-55.1 μg/L), and BuPB (<0.27-17.3 μg/L) were quantified in wastewater influent collected WWTPs of KwaZulu Natal Province. While <0.19-5.43 μg/L, <0.16-5.63 μg/L, <0.17-6.89 μg/L, and <0.19-5.32 μg/L for MePB, EtPB, PrPB, and BuPB, respectively, were quantified in effluent wastewater from the same province. The concentrations of MePB, EtPB, PrPB, and BuPB in influent wastewater from Gauteng Province were 2.58-123 μg/L, <0.24-33.6 μg/L, 3.77-73.4 μg/L and <0.27-85.8 μg/L, respectively. In effluent wastewater, concentrations ranging from 0.24-17.76 μg/L (MePB), <0.16-4.88 μg/L (EtPB), 0.69-12.5 μg/L (PrPB), and <0.19-4.726 μg/L (BuPB) were quantified. During the 4th wave, the concentrations of parabens in surface water were lower compared to the second and third waves of the pandemic. In general, the paraben residues in the surface of KwaZulu Natal Province (<0.08-16.4 μg/L) were higher than those in Gauteng Province (0.08-3.14 µg/L). Methylparaben and propylparaben were dominant in all investigated samples (wastewater and surface water), followed by ethylparaben. The ecotoxicological risk assessment was carried out for aquatic biota, which was estimated in terms of risk quotients (RQs). As lithium (Li) stands out as a crucial component of batteries, the inappropriate disposal of electronic gadgets might drive Li pollution in environmentally sensitive environments, such as dumps, where castor bean (Ricinus communis) plant communities are usually found. The exposure to high Li concentration is potentially harmful to the environment and humans. Therefore, it is opportune to evaluate the potential of bioindicator species to monitor Li contamination. In this scenario, the present study assessed the effects of Li exposure on the development of castor bean plants exposed to lithium chloride at five Li dosages (0, 5, 10, 20, and 30 mg dm−3). Significant symptoms of phytotoxicity were observed at all doses. Li dosage exhibited increasing impairment effects on plant biometrics, such as stem diameter and the number of leaves, as well as on the SPAD index, nutritional balance, and biomass production. Considering the high cost and complicated recycling process of spent lithium-ion batteries (SLIBs), transforming SLIBs into environment functional materials may be a wise approach. Herein, lithium cobaltite (LCO) cathode powders recovered from SLIBs were used to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for removing carbamazepine (CBZ). The recovered LCO enables a 98.2% removal efficiency of CBZ (2.5 mg/L) within 10 min, which was effective at a broader pH range (pH = 5.0–11.0). The influence of key factors (initial pH, PMS, and catalyst dosage) and coexisting substances (SO42−, H2PO4−, NO3−, Cl−, HCO3−, and HA) on CBZ degradation were examined in detail. The primary radical species during the degradation of CBZ were proved to be 1O2, SO4−, and.OH that generated from PMS activation initiated by the valence change of Co in recovered LCO. The recovered LCO displayed excellent reusability with about 80.0% removal of CBZ after six cycles. Homogeneous activation of PMS mainly contributed to CBZ degradation in the first run, but the recovered LCO catalyst dominated the heterogeneous activation of PMS for the degradation of CBZ in the second to sixth run. Finally, the CBZ degradation pathways were presented based on the identified intermediates. Resource utilization of waste masks has become an urgent scientific issue. In this work, with sustainably, waste masks and biomass were co-pyrolysis with oxygen limitation to prepare mask-based biochar (MB). Then, urea was introduced to prepare novel nitrogen modified mask-based biochar (NMB) via a one-step hydrothermal synthesis method. The adsorption characteristics of NMB on the emerging environmental pollutant, bisphenol A (BPA), were evaluated via batch adsorption tests. Moreover, the physicochemical properties of the materials were characterized with various advanced techniques. Also, the roles of waste masks and nitrogen modification were explored. The adsorption mechanisms of NMB on BPA were revealed as well as the performance differences between different adsorbents. The results showed that waste masks participated in thermochemical reactions, shaped the microsphere structure of biochar, and increased the types of surface functional groups. The nitrogen modification enriched the surface elemental composition and activated the specific surface area via the mesopore. These would enhance the adsorption performance. The maximum adsorption of BPA by NMB was 62.63 mg·g−1, which was approximately 2.35–5.58 times higher than that of the control materials. Temkin model and pseudo-second-order model optimally simulate the isothermal and kinetic adsorption, respectively. The adsorption mechanisms are jointly by physical and chemical adsorption, which mainly includes π–π interaction, hydrogen bonding, intraparticle diffusion, surface adsorption, and ion exchange. After discussion and evaluation, NMB has lower preparation process cost (7.21 USD·kg−1) and safety, with potential for environmental applications. Phthalic acid esters (PAEs) are emerging pollutants that need to be analyzed precisely. Chromatography-based determination of PAE content in soils are frequently affected by matrix effect, which may limit the quantification of different kinds of PAEs from different types of soil. Here we optimized a QuEChERS protocol combined with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC–MS) for simultaneous determination of 16 PAEs in different soils. PAEs in different type of soils (fluvo-aquic soil, red soil, and black soil) were extracted with acetonitrile followed by GC–MS detection based on quantitative ion internal standard method. All 16 PAEs showed excellent linear relationships with mass peak areas (R2 > 0.99). The limits of detection (LOD) and limits of quantitation (LOQ) of all the samples were in the range of 0.91–66.97 µg/kg and 2.7–200.9 µg/kg, respectively. The accurate test at 0.5, 0.1, and 1.0 mg/kg spiking level recorded recovery rate between 80.11% and 100.99% with relative standard deviations (RSDs) ranging from 0.37 to 8.50% in tested matrices. No significant matrix effect was observed for most tested PAEs. Neonicotinoids (NEOs), the most widely used class of insecticides, are pervasive in the environment, eliciting concerns due to their hydrophilicity, persistence, and potential ecological risks. As the leading pesticide consumer, China shows significant regional disparities in NEO contamination. This review explores NEO distribution, sources, and toxic risks across China. The primary NEO pollutants identified in environmental samples include imidacloprid, thiamethoxam, and acetamiprid. In the north, corn cultivation represents the principal source of NEOs during wet seasons, while rice dominates in the south year-round. The high concentration levels of NEOs have been detected in the aquatic environment in the southern regions (130.25 ng/L), the urban river Sects. (157.66 ng/L), and the downstream sections of the Yangtze River (58.9 ng/L), indicating that climate conditions and urban pollution emissions are important drivers of water pollution. Neonicotinoids were detected at higher levels in agricultural soils compared to other soil types, with southern agricultural areas showing higher concentrations (average 27.21 ng/g) than northern regions (average 12.77 ng/g). Atmospheric NEO levels were lower, with the highest concentration at 1560 pg/m3. The levels of total neonicotinoid pesticides in aquatic environments across China predominantly exceed the chronic toxicity ecological threshold of 35 ng/L, particularly in the regions of Beijing and the Qilu Lake Basin, where they likely exceed the acute toxicity ecological threshold of 200 ng/L. In the future, efforts should focus on neonicotinoid distribution in agriculturally developed regions of Southwest China, while also emphasizing their usage in urban greening and household settings. Antibiotic contamination poses a significant global concern due to its far-reaching impact on public health and the environment. This comprehensive review delves into the prevalence of various antibiotic classes in environmental pollution and their interactions with natural ecosystems. Fluoroquinolones, macrolides, tetracyclines, and sulphonamides have emerged as prevalent contaminants in environmental matrices worldwide. The concentrations of these antibiotics vary across diverse environments, influenced by production practices, consumer behaviours, and socio-economic factors. Low- and low-middle-income countries face unique challenges in managing antibiotic contamination, with dominant mechanisms like hydrolysis, sorption, and biodegradation leading to the formation of toxic byproducts. Ecotoxicity reports reveal the detrimental effects of these byproducts on aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems, further emphasizing the gravity of the issue. Notably, monitoring the antibiotic parent compound alone may be inadequate for framing effective control and management strategies for antibiotic pollution. This review underscores the imperative of a comprehensive, multi-sectoral approach to address environmental antibiotic contamination and combat antimicrobial resistance. It also advocates for the development and implementation of tailored national action plans that consider specific environmental conditions and factors. The global concern over water pollution caused by contaminants of emerging concern has been the subject of several studies due to the complexity of treatment. Here, the synthesis of a graphene oxide-based magnetic material (GO@Fe3O4) produced according to a modified Hummers' method followed by a hydrothermal reaction was proposed; then, its application as a photocatalyst in clonazepam photo-Fenton degradation was investigated. Several characterization analyses were performed to analyze the structure, functionalization and magnetic properties of the composite. A 23 factorial design was used for the optimization procedure to investigate the effect of [H2O2], GO@Fe3O4 dose and pH on clonazepam degradation. Adsorption experiments demonstrated that GO@Fe3O4 could not adsorb clonazepam. Photo-Fenton kinetics showed that total degradation of clonazepam was achieved within 5 min, and the experimental data were better fitted to the PFO model. A comparative study of clonazepam degradation by different processes highlighted that the heterogeneous photo-Fenton process was more efficient than homogeneous processes. The radical scavenging test showed that O 2 · - was the main active free radical in the degradation reaction, followed by hydroxyl radicals (•OH) and holes (h+) in the valence layer; accordingly, a mechanism of degradation was proposed to describe the process. Among the various compounds regarded as emerging contaminants (ECs), pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) are of particular concern. Their continuous release into the environment has a negative global impact on human life. This review summarizes the sources, occurrence, persistence, consequences of exposure, and toxicity of PPCPs, and evaluates the various analytical methods used in the identification and quantification of PPCPs in a variety of solid and liquid environmental matrices. The current techniques of choice for the analysis of PPCPs are state-of-the-art liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (LC-MS) or tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS2). However, the complexity of the environmental matrices and the trace levels of micropollutants necessitate the use of advanced sample treatments before these instrumental analyses. Solid-phase extraction (SPE) with different sorbents is now the predominant method used for the extraction of PPCPs from environmental samples. This review also addresses the ongoing analytical method challenges, including sample clean-up and matrix effects, focusing on the occurrence, sample preparation, and analytical methods presently available for the determination of environmental residues of PPCPs. Continuous development of innovative analytical methods is essential for overcoming existing limitations and ensuring the consistency and diversity of analytical methods used in investigations of environmental multi-class compounds. The use of graphene oxide (GO) photogenerated electron–hole (e–h+) pairs to degrade pollutants is a novel green method for wastewater treatment. However, the interaction between photosensitive pollutants and a GO–light system remains unclear. In this work, the mechanism of degradation of photosensitive pollutant tetracycline (TC) promoted by GO photogenerated e–h+ pairs was studied. Our studies encompassed the determination of TC removal kinetics, analysis of active substances for TC degradation, identification of degradation products, and computational modeling. Clear evidence shows that a new reaction mechanism of enhanced adsorption and induced generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) was involved. This mechanism was conducive to significantly enhanced TC removal. Kinetic studies showed a first-order behavior that can be well described by the Langmuir–Hinshelwood model. Radical scavenging experiments confirmed that 1O2, •O2−, and holes (h+) were the main active substances for TC degradation. Electron spin resonance analysis indicated that photoexcited TC molecules may transfer electrons to the conduction band of GO to induce the generation of additional ROS. A major transformation product (m/z 459) during TC degradation was identified with liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry. Density functional theory calculation indicated a stronger adsorption between TC and GO under photoirradiation. This mechanism of photo-enhanced adsorption and synergistic induced generation of ROS provides a new strategy for the removal of emerging pollutants in water. The rare earth elements and yttrium (REY) are critical resources increasingly released into the environment due to their pivotal role for an ever-growing number of high-tech products and processes. Fjords, worldwide and particularly in Norway, are not only of high importance for biodiversity but they also have great economic value. Knowledge on the distribution of REY in Norwegian coastal and riverine waters is, however, surprisingly scarce. We here report REY data for water samples from depth profiles from ten stations in the Trondheimfjord, one of Norway's largest fjords, several Norwegian rivers, and two wastewater treatment plants in Trondheim. Our results show that water from different locations in the Trondheimfjord yield similar REY concentrations that correlate well with dissolved organic carbon. The deepest sample at each station shows the lowest REY concentrations. The shale-normalised (SN) REY patterns of the fjord waters resemble those of North Atlantic seawater, but can be distinguished from open-ocean water by the smaller fractionation between light and middle REY (Pr SN /Tb SN ≥ 0.5). Stations in the vicinity of a river mouth show considerably higher REY concentrations at shallow depths. The respective REY SN patterns resemble the typically flat patterns of boreal rivers that are often rich in nanoparticles and colloids (NPCs). The REY SN patterns of the four rivers investigated (Nidelva, Orkla, Gaula, Stjørdalselva) show the features of the shallow(er) fjord water samples but have even higher REY concentrations. Ultrafiltration (< 1 kDa) data for the Nidelva corroborate that the typical "REY SN seawater signature" is in fact already present in freshwater where it is, however, usually hidden by the REY associated with NPCs. The local wastewater treatment plants release anthropogenic Gd (from contrast agents used in magnetic resonance imaging) into the Trondheimfjord, but this signal is immediately diluted and thus is not observed in the REY SN patterns of the fjord water. However, our results in general suggest that the slightly elevated Gd/Tb ratios observed in almost all fjord waters relative to North Atlantic marine water may rather be due to the presence of anthropogenic Gd in the southern North Sea and the Baltic Sea, corroborating that anthropogenic Gd can be applied as a sensitive far-field watermass tracer. Abstract\nNOVELTY STATEMENTHerbicide contamination in aquatic systems has become a global concern due to their long- term persistence, accumulation and health risks to humans. Paraquat, a widely used and cost-effective nonselective herbicide, is frequently applied in agricultural fields for pest control. Consequently, the removal of paraquat from contaminated water is crucial. This research presents a sustainable and environmentally benign method for paraquat removal from aqueous system by integrating wetland plants (Eichhornia crassipes) with biochar derived from melamine-modified palm kernel shells. The prepared biochar was characterized by using various analytical techniques. The effectiveness of biochar in enhancing phytoremediation was evaluated through a series of experiments, showing significant paraquat removal efficiencies of 99.7, 98.3, and 82.8% at different paraquat concentrations 50, 100, and 150 mg L−1, respectively. Additionally, present study examined the impact of biochar on the growth of E. crassipes, highlighting its potential to reduce the toxic effects of paraquat even present at higher concentrations. The paraquat removal mechanism was elucidated, focusing on the synergistic role of biochar adsorption and phytoremediation capability of E. crassipes. This innovative approach is an effective, feasible, sustainable and eco-friendly technique that can contribute to the development of advanced and affordable water remediation processes for widespread application.The novelty of this study lies in the implementation of combined approach by phytoremediation with biochar modified with melamine. This study highlighted synergistic integration of two concurrent systems. The biochar generated from waste palm kernel shells played a pivotal role in facilitating the plants’ survival and resilience against the paraquat toxicity, rather than succumbing to its deleterious effects. This research aims to propose management strategies to mitigate eutrophication caused by inefficient wastewater treatment plants in Colombia. The information analyzed was provided by environmental authorities such as IDEAM, CORANTIOQUIA, and CORNARE in Antioquia, where the average concentrations of phosphorus in wastewater from municipal, livestock, and industrial activities are 5.1, 30.6, and 29.1 mg P/L. The total nitrogen concentrations are 77, 143, and 121 mg N/L, respectively, surpassing the limit concentrations stated by the European Union, the United States, and Mexico, among others, while Colombia has not established its own limits. Including limitations for nutrient concentrations will align Colombia with the 2050 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), where microalgae species like Chlorella or Scenedesmus could be used in wastewater treatment systems for municipalities and industries. These microalgae can capture organic matter, nutrients, and greenhouse emissions and reduce the concentrations observed in natural water. They could also be an alternative for capturing heavy metals and some pollutants of emerging concern. In addition to the ecological and social benefits, the algal biomass could be valorized by transforming it into biological products such as fuels, fertilizers, and pigments when micropollutants are not present, reducing operational costs for treatment systems. Soil and groundwater contamination has been raised as a concern due to the capability of posing a risk to human health and ecology, especially in facing highly toxic and emerging pollutants. Because of the prevalent usage of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), in industrial and production processes, and subsequently the extent of sites contaminated with these pollutants, cleaning up PFOA polluted sites is paramount. This research provides a review of remediation approaches that have been used, and nine remediation techniques were reviewed under physical, chemical, and biological approaches categorization. As the pollutant specifications, environmental implications, and adverse ecological effects of remediation procedures should be considered in the analysis and evaluation of remediation approaches, unlike previous research that considered a couple of PFAS pollutants and generally dealt with technical issues, in this study, the benefits, drawbacks, and possible environmental and ecological adverse effects of PFOA-contaminated site remediation also were discussed. In the end, in addition to providing sufficient and applicable understanding by comprehensively considering all aspects and field-scale challenges and obstacles, knowledge gaps have been found and discussed. Hydrochar from waste biomass is a promising material for removing emerging contaminants (e.g., antibiotics) in water/soil environment. Abundant small-sized hydrochar particles (HPs) with a high content of reactive functional groups and high mobility are easily released into ecosystems through hydrochar applications. However, the photodegradation ability and corresponding structures of HPs are largely unknown, which hinder accurate estimation of the remediation effect of hydrochar in ecosystems. Herein, photodegradation performance of HP towards targeted norfloxacin (NOR, a typical antibiotic) under light irradiation (visible and UV light) were investigated after adsorption processes upon release into soil/water, and its reactive species and photoactive structures were clarified and compared with those of residual bulk hydrochar (BH) comprehensively. The results showed that: (1) photodegradation percentages of HPs were 4.02 and 4.48 times higher than those of BHs under UV and visible light, in which reactive species of both HPs and BHs were ·OH and ·O2−; (2) density functional theory (DFT) results identified that the main photoactive structure of graphitic-N decreased the energy gap (Eg) of HPs, and C=O, COOH groups improved electron donating ability of BHs; (3) well-developed graphitization structure of HP resulted from higher polymerization reaction was an significant photoactive structure involving its superior photodegradation ability relative to that of BH. The distinct heterogeneities of photodegradation ability in HP and BH and underlying photoactive structures provide an in-depth understanding of hydrochar application for removing emerging contaminants in soil/water environment. Identifying photoactive structures is helpful to predict photodegradation ability of hydrochar according to their abundance. This work presents the development of eco-friendly ferrogel beads that can effectively remove emerging pollutant diclofenac (DFC) from wastewater. These beads are composed of natural polysaccharide/iron oxide. The structure and properties of the ferrogel beads were studied using various techniques. Scanning electron microscopy images revealed porosity nature of hydrogel and ferrogel beads due to the incorporation of magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs). TEM images indicates the diameter size of MNPs around 8.3 ± 2 nm. The addition of MNPs resulted in enhanced porosity and visible MNP agglomerates. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy confirmed interactions between the polymer (carboxymethyl cellulose, CMC) and iron oxide nanoparticles, as indicated by characteristic peaks associated with both compounds. X-ray diffraction patterns indicated that MNPs had a crystalline nature (appears the characteristic peaks at 35.6°, 43.3° and 53.7° were corresponding to the (3 1 1), (4 0 0), (4 2 2)) while CMC hydrogel exhibited an amorphous structure. The behavior of fresh and dried beads was compared, revealing that drying increased crosslinking, particularly in the presence of MNPs. This led to a reduction in the swelling percentage of ferrogels (154% at 23 °C in water) when compared to hydrogels (581% at 23 °C in water). Magnetic properties analysis using a vibrating sample magnetometer demonstrated a Langevin-type response for NMPs dispersions, they showed no coercivity, and the saturation magnetization was 47(3) emu/g, in the case of ferrogels beads, the saturation magnetization is 3.8(2) emu/g, indicating a proportion of 8% p/p of nanoparticles relative to the dried beads. Adsorption studies showed that DCF is slowly adsorbed into the beads after 500 min, reaching 50% in the lowest DFC concentration (10 mg/L), 75% in 20 mg/L, 83% in 30 mg/L and 30% in the highest DFC concentration solution (2000 mg/L), the kinetics of DFC adsorption onto ferrogel beads followed a pseudo-second-order and intraparticle diffusion model, indicating physical and chemical interactions as the controlling factor. Adsorption isotherm studies provided insights into the adsorption mechanism and capacity, which are crucial for optimizing adsorbent performance. It was found that the Temkin isotherm shows a better fit. Overall, these findings suggest that ferrogel beads have great potential for environmental applications in pollutant removal due to their high DFC adsorption capacity (qe = 666.7 mg/g), sustainability through reusability, and promising magnetic recovery post-adsorption capabilities. Conventional advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) require significant external energy consumption to eliminate emerging contaminants (ECs) with stable structures. Herein, a catalyst consisting of nanocube BiCeO particles (BCO‐NCs) prepared by an impregnation‐hydrothermal process is reported for the first time, which is used for removing ECs without light/electricity or any other external energy input in water and simultaneous in situ generation of H2O2. A series of characterizations and experiments reveal that dual reaction centers (DRC) which are similar to the valence band/conducting band structure are formed on the surface of BCO‐NCs. Under natural conditions without any external energy consumption, the BCO‐NCs self‐purification system can remove more than 80% of ECs within 30 min, and complete removal of ECs within 30 min in the presence of abundant electron acceptors, the corresponding second‐order kinetic constant is increased to 3.62 times. It is found that O2 can capture electrons from ECs through the Bi─O─Ce bond bridge during the reaction process, leading to the in situ production of H2O2. nH-Perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids (nH-PFCAs) are emerging pollutants. Their identification by ion mobility is frustrated by the nH-PFCAs having unexpectedly small collision cross sections (CCS). Theory and experiment agree that this is because nH-PFCA ions undergo internal hydrogen bridging, and this insight will help guide the creation of more accurate methods for pollutant identification. Urban runoff appears to be a pathway for transferring new emerging pollutants from land-based sources to the aquatic environment. This paper aimed to identify and describe the groups of pollutants present in rainwater surface runoff as well as their mixture with wastewater in the combined sewer system from urbanized catchments and to determine the correlations between these pollutants. Four leading groups of new emerging pollutants have been identified that may be present in rainwater and municipal wastewater mixtures. The samples were tested for microplastics, phthalic acid esters, pesticides, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons as well as basic parameters. The pilot site was Słupsk (northwestern Poland). We conducted nine sampling campaigns at three points. The results of the present study revealed that (i) polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons were not present in the tested samples; (ii) the selected organochlorine pesticides were detected during one campaign in the dry season and therefore were not of critical importance; (iii) out of the 11 analyzed phthalic acid esters, five selected substances released from commonly used plastic products were present; and (iv) the number of microplastics contained in the tested samples ranged from 1,400 to 14,036 pcs/L and even occurred during pure rainfall. Clean energy production and environmental remediation are imperative for sustainable future. Specially, exploration of multifunctional catalyst, for production of low-cost and eco-friendly hydrogen (H 2) fuel as well as efficient decomposition of emerging pollutants are certainly needed. This study investigates magnesium manganese oxide (MgMnO 3), a perovskite oxide, synthesized by simple citrate sol–gel technique, and its structural, morphological, optical, and photoelectrochemical properties were analyzed for the photodegradation of ciprofloxacin (CIP) antibiotic, methylene blue (MB) dye, and photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting. The cubic spinel crystal structure of MgMnO 3 was confirmed through powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. FE-SEM images of the MgMnO 3 material revealed a cauliflower-like morphology, consisting of an assembly of microspherical grains of varying sizes. UV–Vis spectroscopy exhibited broad absorption in the UV–Visible region, and the Tauc plot estimated a band gap of 1.54 eV. The MgMnO 3 catalyst showed 88% and 96% for photodecomposition of CIP (10 mg/L) and MB (10 mg/L), respectively, using 35 mg and 30 mg of catalyst quantity over 90 min. In addition, MgMnO 3 photoelectrode showcases superior photoelectrochemical behavior, exhibiting maximal photocurrent density of 13.21 mA cm−2 measured at 1.2 V vs. RHE and achieving a solar-to-hydrogen conversion efficiency of 2.45% compared to MgO and MnO 2 photoelectrode. EIS measurements of MgMnO 3 show enhanced charge transfer and recombination kinetics. Notably, the MgMnO 3 electrode reveals outstanding photoelectrochemical durability, maintaining its stability even after continuous illumination for 9 h. Improved PEC properties could be attributed to wider light absorption, enhanced photo-induced charge-separations, and electron mobility. Water is an essential and irreplaceable necessity for life on earth, sustaining ecosystems, nourishing agriculture and vital for human survival. However, increasing population and industrialization has exacerbated water scarcity and pollution. The Sustainable Development Goal 6 focuses on clean water and sanitation for all; thus, water purification and conservation are key priorities globally. Rampant pollution of water sources by emerging bio-recalcitrant contaminants, often deviant of conventional treatment methods, necessitates new approaches to water treatment. In this regard, metal organic frameworks (MOFs) are gaining prominence and offer solutions in versatile applications due to their unique structural characteristics and tunable properties. This review provides a comprehensive analysis of MOFs, covering their diverse structures, types, synthesis methods and characterization techniques. We explore the application of MOFs in water purification, as adsorbents, photocatalysts, and in membrane separation. The mechanism of operation of MOFs in each application is critically evaluated. The effect of the water treatment methods on energy consumption has also been investigated. We propose that for MOFs application in water treatment to be competitive and sustainable, there is need to address key issues such as synthesis of highly selective MOFs, recovery and reuse, scalability (pilot and industrial scale), and integration with existing water treatment technologies to create synergy. South-to-North Water Diversion Project, a globally renowned engineering feat, aims to address water supply issues. The sediments within reservoirs play a pivotal role in natural ecosystems, not only as habitats for diverse biota but also as repositories of heavy metals, organic matter, and other contaminants. These sediments serve as a critical interface between sediment and water bodies. This comprehensive analysis focused on the spatial patterns of nutrients, organic matter, and heavy metals in the surface layer and profiles of reservoirs, exploring their interconnectedness. Leveraging the integrated pollution index, organic pollution index, potential ecological risk index, and geo-accumulation index, an ecological risk assessment was performed. The key findings are as follows: (i) Along the Middle Route of the South-to-North Diversion Project, the nutrient and organic matter contents in sediments tends to rise with distance from the Danjiangkou Reservoir, with the TN and TC contents increasing by 2.35- and 3.05-fold, respectively. (ii) As the sediment depth increases, the carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, and organic matter contents exhibit varying degrees of decline, with average decreases of 62.38%, 67.47%, 17.56%, and 41.83% for TN, TC, TP, and OM, respectively. (iii) Among the eight heavy metals, only manganese (Mn) and zinc (Zn) in the Yahekou Reservoir showed moderate pollution levels, according to the geo-accumulation index. The Mn content within the surface sediments of the six reservoirs ranges from 550 to 1837 mg/kg (average, 1019.5 ± 548.3 mg/kg), whereas the Zn content ranges from 89 to 360 mg/kg (average, 156.5 ± 101.6 mg/kg). (vi) Total phosphorus (TP) and total nitrogen (TN) emerged as the primary pollutants in surface sediments. Comprehensive nitrogen and phosphorus pollution assessment revealed that the surface sediment of Danjiangkou Reservoir is mildly polluted, while Baiguishan and Jiangang Reservoirs are moderately polluted, and the rest are heavily contaminated. For the Yahekou and Chaohe Reservoirs, the average pollutant content indicates moderate pollution, while the remaining reservoirs show mild pollution levels.
