The current research advances understanding of how consumers respond to embarrassing service encounters. Across a combination of field and online studies, the authors provide evidence that (1) consumers prefer self-service to human services when purchasing embarrassing products or services; (2) when self-service is not available, consumers respond more positively to a mechanistic service provider than to a personable service provider; and (3) if consumers must engage in embarrassing social interactions, they dehumanize service providers, perceiving them as more mechanistic and less capable of emotional reactions than when engaging in nonembarrassing service interactions. The authors also examine consumers' familiarity with the service provider as a boundary condition for the effect. Background: Comprehensive sexuality education (CSE) is essential in empowering adolescents with the knowledge and confidence to manage their sexual and reproductive health. Despite its recognized benefits, access to quality CSE remains limited, especially in low-income countries, where societal norms and structural barriers hinder effective delivery. The aim of this study is to investigate the experiences and perceptions among students, teachers, and principals in Nepal about comprehensive sexuality education. Methods: Qualitative methods were used. 13 Semi-structured interviews and 1 focus group discussion were carried out with 15 teachers and principals working at higher secondary schools and two focus group discussions were conducted with a total of 13 adolescents. Thematic analysis was used to analyze the data. Results: Four themes were developed: Resistance to Teaching and Learning, Preparation and Engagement Strategies, Taboos and Silencing and Structural Barriers. Students, teachers, principals and students reported discomfort and embarrassment when discussing sensitive topics, with gender dynamics playing a significant role. Strategies like warm-up sessions and continuous interaction with students and parents were used to create a supportive learning environment. However, socio-cultural barriers and family attitudes continued to hinder open discussions about sexuality. Structural barriers, including the lack of formal training for teachers and inadequate instructional materials, further impeded effective CSE delivery. Conclusion: The experiences of CSE in Nepal among students, teachers and principals highlight significant barriers including cultural taboos, gender dynamics and insufficient resources. This research analyses embarrassment as a barrier to the adoption of new technologies. It evaluates how the level of multifunctionality in technologies moderates the shopping experience of consumers in the technological environment (prior experience with the technology and their social exposure in the consumption environment), leading to feelings of embarrassment and impacting adoption intention. Four experiments were developed to assess the effects of the antecedents cited (multifunctionality and shopping experience) on embarrassment and adoption of new technologies. The results indicate that embarrassment can be generated according to the composition of the consumer's profile – for example, low levels of prior experience with the technology and high social exposure to technological innovation usage. This research also identifies the extent to which embarrassment directly reduces the intention to adopt new technologies and acts as a psychological barrier in the consumption process. Therefore, even if a product is new, exciting, and fun, and has high market potential, if the shopping experience (impacted by prior experience or social exposure) when moderated by the multifunctionality generates embarrassment, the individual will avoid consumption of the product. Background: Maintaining sexual health and function is important to many older adults. Although older patients are regular users of primary care, opportunities to address sexual health concerns are missed. Building on interview studies, this research aimed to collect a larger number of older adults' perspectives to deepen understanding of sexual healthcare needs and formulate recommendations for the Australian primary care context. Methods: As part of the SHAPE2 Survey of older adults' sexual health information-seeking behaviours, participants (aged ≥60 years and living in Australia) were asked what sexual health issues were most important to them, and the barriers they experienced in managing their sexual health. Data were collected in 2021 in the form of free-text comments. The sub-set of comments that related to healthcare experiences were analysed using qualitative content analysis. Results: Out of 1470 survey participants, 864 responded to the relevant questions, and of these 107 wrote about healthcare experiences. Some comments described positive experiences seeking sexual health care; however, the majority outlined barriers to accessing support. Barriers were categorised into seven categories: patient embarrassment, barriers to rapport, uncertainty about finding solutions, ageism, barriers unique to minorities, needing general practitioners to initiate conversations and structural barriers. Conclusions: Older patients want general practitioners to initiate sexual health conversations as part of routine care, and, crucially, sexual issues raised by the patient should be legitimised and treated with due attention. Although challenges, such as time, embarrassment and pressing health concerns, may hamper sexual health discussions, it is important that this area of holistic care is given more attention. Aims: Inpatient falls among older adults are a relentless problem, and extant inpatient fall prevention research and interventions lack the older adults' perspectives and experiences of their own fall risk in the hospital. Theory‐guided research is essential in nursing, and the purpose of this paper was to describe the process of developing a theoretical framework for a phenomenological nursing study exploring older adults' lived experiences of being at risk for falling in the hospital. Method: Based on philosophical nursing underpinnings, the Health Belief Model (HBM) was selected as the theoretical model. The limitations of the model led to expansion of the model with established concepts associated with accidental falls among older adults. Results: The HBM was selected as the guiding model due to its ability to capture a broad range of perceptions of a health threat. The HBM was expanded with the concepts of embarrassment, independence, fear of falling, dignity and positivity effect. The addition of these concepts made the theoretical framework more applicable to age‐related developmental behaviours of older adult and more applicable to nursing research. Theorists have proposed that a value of close friends and family—strong ties—is the ability to confide in them when facing difficult issues. But close relationships are complicated, and recent studies report that people sometimes avoid strong ties when facing personal issues. How common is such avoidance? The question speaks to theoretical debates over the nature of "closeness" and practical concerns over social isolation. We develop an approach and test it on new, nationally representative data. We find that, when facing personal difficulties, adult Americans are as likely to avoid as to talk to close friends and family. Most avoidance is not actively reflected on but passively enacted, and, contrary to common belief, is not limited to either specific network members or particular topics, depending instead on the conjunction of member and topic. Building on Simmel, we propose that a theory of the fundamental need to conceal and reveal helps account for the findings. We suggest that there is no more empirical justification for labeling strong ties as those who are trusted than for labeling them as those who are avoided. Background: Avoidance of colonoscopy is often associated with fear, embarrassment, and disgust aroused in screening procedures. However, each emotion can be linked to different challenges faced by patients. More research is needed to evaluate and address the causes of these respective emotions. Aim: The purpose of this study was to develop and assess the scales of three negative emotions (i.e., fear, embarrassment, and disgust) caused by specific issues in colonoscopy screening. Method: The measurement items were developed based on multiple common barriers in colonoscopy screening procedures. An online sample of 232 adults aged 45-75 was recruited from Amazon Mechanical Turk to test the scales. Explorative and confirmatory factor analyses were conducted to validate the measurement models. Results: Psychometric evidence demonstrated the factor structures of three negative emotions. Each emotional factor was caused by unique combinations of barriers in the preparation, screening, and recovery stages of colonoscopy. Most of the emotional factors were associated with attitudes and screening intention. Conclusion: This study showed different dimensions of negative emotions and their underlying causes in colonoscopy. Although possessing flexibility and accessibility, asynchronous online courses suffer from high attrition and cause unsatisfactory learning performance, leading to a pressing need to understand factors influencing learners' continuance of learning intention. Based on the expectation confirmation model, this study investigated perceived enjoyment as an extended variable to unpack the mediating effects of perceived usefulness and perceived enjoyment on the relationship between confirmation and continuance intention. Quantitative data from 254 learners enrolled in asynchronous online English courses were obtained for data analysis. Results indicate that confirmation significantly and positively affects learners' continuance intention to take the asynchronous online English courses. Perceived usefulness and perceived enjoyment significantly mediate the relationship between confirmation and continuance intention. The total indirect effect of confirmation on continuance intention through perceived enjoyment and perceived usefulness and the combination of perceived enjoyment and perceived usefulness was 55.52%. Additionally, interviews with five learners revealed that despite limited real-time interaction, they highly value asynchronous online courses given that they promote self-regulated learning, offer choice freedom, foster a sense of achievement, and reduce anxiety and embarrassment risks that trigger their learning enjoyment. This study provided deep insights into factors influencing EFL learners' decisions in asynchronous learning. Instructors are suggested to improve the quality of courses, provide timely feedback, and design tasks to improve learners' perceptions of enjoyment and usefulness to further improve learners' confirmation of online courses and their continuance intention to engage in online synchronous learning. Embarrassment plays a pivotal role in the consumer landscape by significantly influencing consumers' purchase and consumption experiences. While marketing scholarship has primarily focused on the undesirable facets of embarrassment, the present research examines the positive outcomes of embarrassment for consumers, firms, and the environment. Based on costly signaling theory, this research seeks to determine the effect of embarrassment on consumer preferences toward prosocial products. Using six experimental studies (including one in the Supporting Information: Appendix), we demonstrate that embarrassment positively influences the purchase intention for environment‐friendly and sustainable products. Using lab and consequential studies, we show that the motivation to repair the social image mediates the effect of embarrassment on prosocial product preference. We also identify that public self‐consciousness moderates this effect, such that embarrassed individuals with high (vs. low) public self‐consciousness exhibit higher prosocial product preference. We also show that our core predictions on the effect of embarrassment on prosocial products is contingent upon the social context, such that embarrassment leads to enhanced intentions to repair social image and prosocial product preference in public but not in private purchase context. The results hold for various product categories. The findings contribute to a greater theoretical understanding of embarrassment by revealing a prosocial facet of the phenomenon. Background: Dyspareunia (pain during sex) is a common condition that causes physical and emotional stress for many women. This condition can be caused by various factors, including physical, hormonal, inflammatory, viral, neoplastic, psychological, and traumatic events. Anatomical causes include pelvic floor muscular weakness, uterine retroversion, hymenal remnants, and pelvic organ prolapse. The etiology of this condition is complex, causing it to be often overlooked. Objectives: The main aim of this study was to conduct a qualitative exploratory study and provide a comprehensive description of the knowledge and attitudes held by gynecologists in Kazakhstan on the medical validity, diagnosis, and treatment of dyspareunia. Design: This is an exploratory-descriptive qualitative study. Methods: Semi-structured online interviews were conducted with 10 physicians. They were identified as obstetrics and gynecology specialists, gynecologic oncologists, and outpatient gynecologists. The average number of years spent practicing their specialty is 15.7, with the shortest being 4 years and the longest being 35 years. All the participants are female. Braun and Clarke's six-stage, step-by-step methodology was used for the thematic analysis. Results: Findings suggest that gynecologists in Kazakhstan have knowledge of the most common causes of dyspareunia, although they still often attribute women's distress to psychological rather than physical factors. It was found that due to stigma and mutual embarrassment open dialogue about sexual health was lacking between patients and physicians. In addition, gynecologists describe difficulties discussing symptoms and performing intimate examinations due to time constraints and a lack of privacy at state facilities. Conclusion: To knowledgeably diagnose and treat patients with dyspareunia, gynecologists recommend further training to acquire the requisite evidence-based knowledge and competencies. Darwin proposed that blushing—the reddening of the face owing to heightened self-awareness—is 'the most human of all expressions'. Yet, relatively little is known about the underlying mechanisms of blushing. Theories diverge on whether it is a rapid, spontaneous emotional response that does not involve reflection upon the self or whether it results from higher-order socio-cognitive processes. Investigating the neural substrates of blushing can shed light on the mental processes underlying blushing and the mechanisms involved in self-awareness. To reveal neural activity associated with blushing, 16–20 year-old participants (n = 40) watched pre-recorded videos of themselves (versus other people as a control condition) singing karaoke in a magnetic resonance imaging scanner. We measured participants' cheek temperature increase—an indicator of blushing—and their brain activity. The results showed that blushing is higher when watching oneself versus others sing. Those who blushed more while watching themselves sing had, on average, higher activation in the cerebellum (lobule V) and the left paracentral lobe and exhibited more time-locked processing of the videos in early visual cortices. These findings show that blushing is associated with the activation of brain areas involved in emotional arousal, suggesting that it may occur independently of higher-order socio-cognitive processes. AbstractDespite the growing research interest in facial recognition payment (FRP), the factors that influence the intention to switch to FRP have received limited attention. Grounded in status quo bias theory, this study explores predictors of users’ intention to switch from QR code payment to FRP through an online survey. The empirical findings based on 1,244 responses indicate that the need for uniqueness negatively affects embarrassment, privacy concern, and inertia and positively affects switch intention. Further, embarrassment and privacy concern are both positively related to inertia and negatively related to switch intention, and inertia significantly reduces switch intention. Through multi-group analysis, this study also finds that users with experience using services enabled by facial recognition technology are more willing to switch to FRP. With the widespread use of masks in the COVID-19 pandemic, it is crucial to understand how emotion recognition is affected by partial face covering. Since individuals with autism spectrum condition often tend to look at the lower half of the face, they are likely to be particularly restricted in emotion recognition by people wearing masks, since they are now forced to look at the upper half of the face. This study compared the recognition of basic and complex emotions in individuals with and without autism spectrum condition, when faces were presented uncovered, with face masks, or with sunglasses. We also used eye tracking to examine group differences in gaze patterns during emotion recognition. Individuals with autism spectrum condition were less accurate at recognizing emotions in all three conditions. Averaged across the three stimulus types, individuals with autism spectrum condition had greater difficulty recognizing anger, fear, pride, and embarrassment than control group. There was no group difference in emotion recognition between the three conditions. However, compared to individuals without autism spectrum condition, there was no evidence of either gaze avoidance or preference for the mouth region. Our results suggest that emotion recognition is reduced in individuals with autism spectrum condition, but this is not due to differences in gaze patterns. In the COVID-19 pandemic, wearing face masks became mandatory to prevent the spread of the virus. However, they restrict the ability to recognize emotions to the upper part of the face. Since individuals with autism spectrum condition often tend to look at the lower half of the face, they may be particularly restricted in emotion recognition by people wearing masks, since they are now forced to look at the upper half of the face. The current study compared the recognition of facially expressed emotions between individuals with and without autism spectrum condition. Each photo was shown in three types, once uncovered, once with face mask, and once with sunglasses. Our results revealed a reduction in accuracy of individuals with autism spectrum condition at recognizing emotions in all three stimulus types and exhibited more difficulties distinguishing anger, fear, pride, and embarrassment. During the emotion recognition task, there was no difference in which facial areas the groups looked at. The tendency toward poverty in the globalizing world significantly affects women. Unlike men, women have mandatory expenses every month. Especially poor women have difficulty in accessing to the hygienic products they need during the menstrual period. That is why, this study aims to develop a measurement tool that can effectively and widely assess women's menstrual poverty. This study is a methodological study that evaluates the psychometric properties of the scale. The study included 420 women living in a middle-income province in the north of Türkiye between April – July, 2023. The data were collected using the Menstrual Poverty Scale, and the items on the scale were developed based on a review of existing literature and expert opinions (CVI = 0.85–0.95). The sample was divided into two parts. It was made exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis. Before conducting the study, an ethics committee decision and informed consent of the women were obtained. The collected data were analyzed using the SPSS 23 and AMOS 23 programs. The EFA revealed a structure consisting of 13 items and four factors. The four factors considered were as follows; access to hygiene products, quality of life, embarrassment, and receiving information, and education about menstruation. The item factor loadings varied from 0.46 to 0.91. The Cronbach's alpha coefficient was determined to be 0.69. The corrected item-total correlations for the scale items ranged from 0.62 to 0.84. According to the confirmatory factor analysis, the structural equation modeling results of the Menstrual Poverty Scale were found to be meaningful (p =.000; RMSEA 0.64; CMIN/Df 1.70). Vaccination is a vital defense against COVID-19 infections and outbreaks, yet vaccine hesitancy poses a significant threat to pandemic response and recovery. We conducted a systematic review of published randomized controlled trials (N = 47) assessing the persuasive effects of COVID-19 communication on COVID-19 vaccine acceptance. Individual vs. collective appeals and gain vs. loss frames are among the most frequently assessed message features, but they generally do not make a difference in persuasion. Normative messages that highlight higher (vs. lower) prevalence of vaccine acceptance are more persuasive. Message sources overall have limited impact on COVID-19 vaccine acceptance, but sources that have a shared identity with the message receivers tend to be persuasive. More engaging message channels such as interactive chatbots and videos are promising communication tools but are generally under-utilized and under-studied. Compared to no communication or irrelevant communication, COVID-19 vaccine messages generally have a small advantage in increasing COVID-19 vaccine acceptance. Messages that include 1) vaccine safety and/or efficacy information; 2) collective appeals combined with embarrassment appeals; and 3) political leaders' vaccine endorsement are among the most effective messaging strategies. There is no evidence of any backfire effects of COVID-19 vaccine messages. We discuss the implications of our findings for persuasive message design in pandemic vaccine communication. We report on a qualitative Group Survey study involving four healthcare professionals (HCPs) and eight people living with HIV who were recipients of care in the United Kingdom (UK). The survey aimed to bring participants' perspectives into dialogue and establish consensus about how communication between HCPs delivering HIV care and their patients could be improved in the context of the routine care consultation. Responses from both parties were anonymously collated, thematically analysed, and shared back with participants in two subsequent survey rounds to support consensus-building on matters of concern and identify thematic insights. In this paper, we report three themes for informing future designs of tools and services to support communication between patients and HCPs: Patient-clinician relationship for trusted sharing; Self-reporting psychosocial information to support Whole-person care; and Perceived barriers for online trusted sharing with HCPs. Our findings highlight key areas of concern and further investigation is needed to understand how self-reported information may be meaningfully captured, interpreted and processed by HCPs in ways that are trusted by patients who voice privacy and security concerns. Ending the HIV epidemic in the United States will require addressing social determinants contributing to poor care engagement among people living with HIV (PLH), such as food insecurity. Food insecurity is associated with poor care engagement among PLH. Yet, few studies have examined the perspectives of healthcare and social services providers on addressing food insecurity in HIV care. Guided by the Social Ecological Model, we conducted semi-structured interviews with 18 providers in New York State to understand barriers and facilitators to addressing food insecurity in HIV care. Thematic analysis illustrated eight themes across various levels of the Social Ecological Model. At the patient-level, providers perceived patients' feelings of embarrassment, shame, and judgement, and low health literacy as barriers. At the provider-level, challenges included limited time. Facilitators included fostering strong, patient-provider relationships. Barriers at the clinic-level included limited funding, while clinic resources served as facilitators. At the community-level, challenges included intersecting stigmas arising from community norms towards PLH and people who receive food assistance and limited access to healthy food. This paper argues that the work of Erving Goffman can be profitably re-read with the aid of Juliane Vogel's work on the cultural logic of "the entrance" [der Auftritt]. Although Goffman's "dramaturgical sociology" makes use of several theatrical concepts for the analysis of face-to-face interaction in everyday life, "entrance" itself is not among them. The essay begins by demonstrating the significance of entrance for Goffman's thought. For Goffman, as for Vogel, answering the question, "Who's there?" is a necessary and pivotal moment in any face-to-face encounter. Then, it turns to the link between entrance and embarrassment, which has long been recognized as a critical concern for Goffman. Embarrassment proves to be the consequence of a "failed entrance" in Goffman's writing; its status as looming threat to any encounter, and the need for precautions to prevent it, suggest something about the fragility of social intercourse and a certain structural interminability of entrance. The final sections attempt to historicize Goffman's understanding of the human being as a performer compelled to enter into and out of conflicting and even contradictory roles, then explores theatrical antecedents of Goffman's social actor in two works from Shakespeare and Kleist. The condition of a product (i.e., being used or new) plays an important role in consumer judgment and purchase decisions, yet this phenomenon has been relatively under-researched. Using an experimental approach, this study investigates the effect of embarrassment on choice of used and new products. We demonstrate that due to the embarrassment associated with buying used products, Chinese consumers are more likely than their US counterparts to choose new products over used ones. Furthermore, we find that this difference can be attenuated by reframing used products positively as antiques. Our findings enrich the theoretical understanding of consumer behavior across cultures, offer important managerial implications, and provide novel insights into future research directions. This perspective paper presents a discussion around the issues of sexual violence (SV) in rural and remote areas and the associated discourses of shame. The authors propose that shame of SV adds additional trauma to survivors, further impacting survivors' mental health which may be exacerbated in rural areas. Shame is a complex emotion that can result in increased feelings of guilt, humiliation, and embarrassment. Shame has been identified as an underlying risk factor and a mechanism for post‐assault mental health problems. We propose it can be particularly pronounced for women subjected to sexual assault in rural or remote areas. This paper will explore the link between SV and shame, explain how shame attached to SV may be used as an informal social control mechanism for women, particularly in rural and remote areas, and discuss the role of health practitioners, particularly mental health nurses, who play a key role in supporting people impacted by SV. SV is an insidious social phenomenon that can have profound consequences for individuals, families, and communities. Addressing shame and stigma is a crucial component of supporting survivors of SV in rural and remote areas. There is a need for targeted community‐led interventions and responsive support services to address the complex and multifaceted issues contributing to SV in rural and remote communities. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between fear of failure and entrepreneurial intentions in students. The Entrepreneurial Intention Questionnaire (EIQ) was used to assess entrepreneurial intention, while the Performance Failure Appraisal Inventory (PFAI) was employed to evaluate the fear of failure. The study involved 288 students from various regions in Indonesia, and accidental sampling was used as the sampling technique. The analysis, using the Spearman-Rho correlation test, revealed a negative correlation between fear of failure and entrepreneurial intention (p = 0.033 (p < 0.05)), indicating that higher levels of fear of failure were associated with lower entrepreneurial intentions. Furthermore, the analysis showed that specific aspects of fear of failure, such as fear of shame and embarrassment (p = 0.016), fear of devaluing one's self-estimate (p = 0.002), and fear of having an uncertain future (p = 0.031) were significantly negatively correlated with entrepreneurial intentions. However, the fear of important others losing interest and the fear of upsetting important others showed no correlation with entrepreneurial intention. Additional analysis revealed no significant differences in entrepreneurial intention based on age and gender, but a significant difference was observed based on domicile. Aims: To explore the experiences and consequences of bariatric surgery stigma from the perspective of bariatric surgery patients and to identify knowledge gaps in the literature. Design: A scoping review. Data Sources: Studies published between December 2002 and January 2022 were identified from the following databases: PubMed, Web of Science, PsycINFO and MEDLINE. Review Methods: We screened 3092 records and included 28 studies. Findings were grouped thematically using the health stigma discrimination framework. Results: Patients experienced several types of stigmas, including perceived, experienced, anticipated and internalized stigma, related to undergoing bariatric surgery. Patients were confronted with negative comments and judgement from others when they disclosed their decision to have surgery or when they revealed that they had undergone surgery. These experiences led to conflicts in the decision‐making process, such as delaying the choice for surgery, seeking surgery abroad or opting out. Patients who internalized stigma often reported feelings of shame and embarrassment for choosing surgery and felt the need for secrecy or selective disclosure. Stigma experiences were influenced by gender and differed between different subgroups of patients. Conclusion: The stigma surrounding bariatric surgery has detrimental consequences for eligible individuals and bariatric surgery patients. However, the evidence from patients' perspective remains limited. More research into patient's experiences is needed to improve patient care and further educate healthcare professionals. In addition, to better understand the nature and implications of bariatric surgery stigma, future research should be founded on stigma theories and distinguish between the different types of stigmas. Despite the advances made in understanding the effects of humiliation, no univocal position regarding its meaning exists. Indeed, so indiscreet is its meaning, the emotion is commonly conflated with other related emotions such as shame, embarrassment, and anger. Employing a scoping review design, this review aimed to scope the empirical literature concerning the meaning of humiliation from the perspective of two definitional parameters: i) status, subsuming the values descriptive and prescriptive, and ii) format, subsuming the values intension and extension. CINAHL, EMBASE, EMCare, MEDLINE, PsycINFO, and PubMed were searched for eligible studies. In total, twelve studies were synthesized in this review. Vis-à-vis status, seven studies were found to define humiliation prescriptively, and five, descriptively. Vis-à-vis format, seven studies defined humiliation intensionally, and five, extensionally. Accordingly, the meaning of humiliation varies in the literature. As a first-generation college student (FGCS), I have never felt entirely comfortable with this label, both in academic spaces and in various personal family situations. The notion of being a FGCS has evoked internal embarrassment, a sense of academic otherness, and external micro-aggressions. Through an autoethnographic analysis of my participation in the FGCS annual workshop, I explore the strengths and weaknesses of this category. The workshop provided insights into the diverse experiences of FGCSs, revealing it to be a fluid academic construct with multiple voices and narratives. However, when intersecting with other identities, the fragility of the FGCS category emerged, leading to conflicting conversations and resistance among participants. A rigid definition of FGCS overlooks its historical context of social exclusions and disregards the unique sensitivities and differences among ethnic and national groups within it. This approach weakens the struggle of marginalized groups and perpetuates their exclusion, both on and off campus. Acknowledging the complexity and diversity within the FGCS category can foster a more inclusive environment that respects the unique experiences of each individual. Catfishing is a form of online deception where an individual presents themselves as an identity that is not their own. The study reported in this article explored the motivations for catfish perpetrators and the impacts on those who had been catfished in terms of the emotions and feelings expressed by victims. Data was collected using the crowd-sourced question and answer website Quora [1] and analysis was conducted on a pre-existing corpus of data which contained participant's answers to questions on catfishing. An automated linguistic analysis using Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count (LIWC-2022 [2]) and a thematic analysis (Braun and Clarke in Qual Res Psychol 3:77–101, 2006 [38]) were conducted on participant's descriptions of their perceptions of the motivations of catfishes and their catfishing experiences. The thematic analysis indicated that the motivations of catfish perpetrators can be linked to entertainment, emulating an ideal self, desiring meaningful interaction, and financial gain. Six emotions and feelings emerged from the accounts of catfishing victims: suspicion, love, depression, anger, embarrassment, and stupidity. These findings contribute to an understanding of what motivates individuals to catfish and suggests further research to explore specific emotions and feelings that catfish victims experience. The LIWC analysis and language style matching analysis showed that the data collected was mostly personal to each individual and that there were similarities in how victims write about their experiences. Chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) in the severe forms is associated with a poor quality of life. Dupilumab has been suggested as an add-on treatment option for severe CRSwNP. Severe CRSwNP patients treated with Dupilumab in different rhinological units were considered for this study via their evaluation at the baseline at first and the consequential follow-up at 6-, 12-, and 24 months from the first administration. At baseline (T0) and at each follow-up, patients underwent NPS, Sinonasal Outcome Test (SNOT)-22, Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) for smell, and Sniffin' sticks identification test (SSIT). The SNOT-22 domains for function and emotion were also analysed separately. Two hundred and seventeen patients with at least 6 months of follow-up were included. All parameters have improved during treatment (p < 0.0001). Noticeably, both the function and emotion SNOT-22 domains have improved within 6 months of treatment and have continued to progress during every interval within 12 months from the baseline, positively influencing patients' emotivity and augmenting their social and economic performances. Dupilumab improves the QoL of CRSwNP patients with good effects on the reported productivity and emotional health. We tested whether a didactic and a narrative video (i.e. educational content and personal stories versus irrelevant information) could boost colorectal cancer (CRC) screening intention directly and through cognitive predictors of CRC screening behavior. We also tested whether exposure to a story changed participants' affective forecasting, reducing the perception of negative emotions associated with CRC screening (disgust, embarrassment, and fear). The study was conducted online with a between‐participants design and recruiting a convenience sample (N = 375). We found that, compared with watching the control video, being exposed to the narrative video about CRC screening was indirectly associated with greater screening intention via vicarious experience and positive attitudes, whereas watching the didactic video was positively associated with CRC screening intention only among participants who had received an invitation letter but did not get screened, and among those yet to receive an invitation to screen. In the latter group, screening intention was boosted through positive attitudes. Our findings do not confirm that stories change affective forecasting, but narration likely fosters messages acceptance through vicarious experience. We also found support for the effectiveness of physicians' recommendations in promoting CRC screening, an intervention that might be effectively administered through a generalized, cost‐effective video. In public settings such as retail, an embarrassed consumer may be witnessed by others. Thus, vicarious embarrassment may be even more ubiquitous than embarrassment itself. However, the impact of observers' individual characteristics on reactions to embarrassing service disruptions is not clear. To close this gap, the current research examines how observers' self‐construal, or their perception of the self in relation to others, systematically alters observers' responses to embarrassing service disruptions. The data for this research was collected from 674 US respondents recruited amongst undergraduate students at a large North American university (study 1, n = 193) and from an online subject panel (study 2, n = 281 and study 3, n = 200). Across all three experiments, the authors demonstrate that vicarious embarrassment is conditional on observers' self‐construal. Specifically, the results demonstrate that observers with a predominantly interdependent self‐construal experience stronger vicarious embarrassment than consumers with a predominantly independent self‐construal. This occurs because they are more likely to take the actor's perspective. These differences manifest whether we operationalize self‐construal as a measured individual difference or use a prime to induce self‐construal situationally. Furthermore, observers with a predominantly interdependent self‐construal alter their word‐of‐mouth, complaining, and avoidance intentions, effects mediated by perspective‐taking and vicarious embarrassment. This study investigates the barriers in implementing design-thinking workshops aimed at facilitating digital transformation within organizations. Employing a qualitative approach with semi-structured interviews of experienced practitioners, the research identifies key barriers in pre-workshop preparations, during workshop facilitation and post-workshop implementation. Financial constraints, employee resistance due to a lack of perceived need, and discomfort with ambiguity are among the key challenges before the workshops. During execution, hierarchical dynamics, psychological barriers like fear of embarrassment, and cognitive barriers including limited creativity and imagination hinder effective participation. Additionally, post-workshop challenges primarily concern the lack of implementation due to resource constraints and unmet expectations. The study proposes strategies such as careful participant selection, fostering an open environment, and emphasizing post-workshop documentation to mitigate these issues. Background: Some studies suggest that female patients have more concerns about receiving intimate care from male than female nurses. Thus, providing intimate care to female patients is a challenging experience for male nurses. The purpose of this study was to explore Chinese male nurses' experiences and process of providing intimate clinical care to female patients. Methods: A constructivist grounded theory approach was used to develop a theoretical understanding of male nurses' experiences. This study included participants from 3 hospitals in different locations in China. Twenty-five male nurses were recruited using purposive and theoretical sampling. Semi-structured interviews were conducted. Data analysis was completed using initial coding, focused coding, theoretical coding and memo writing to produce core concepts and categories, and theory development. Results: Chinese male nurses' experiences of providing intimate care to female patients can be constructed as a three-stage process: (1) anticipation of the level of embarrassment, (2) deciding on the process: do it or not do it and (3) protecting both parties and dealing with embarrassment. Additionally, seven themes and associated categories were identified to represent the important factors in the process of male nurses providing intimate care to female patients in China. Conclusions: Chinese traditional culture may affect the embarrassment in Chinese male nurses providing intimate care to female patients. The embarrassing situation can be divided into three different stages, and male nurses have different main concerns in each stage. Hospital nursing administrators should consider the experiences and needs of male nurses in providing intimate care and provide them with psychological support, education and training. This paper investigates the moral emotion of being socially, but non-agentially connected to a harm. I propose understanding the emotion of an affiliated onlooker as a species of regret called 'social-regret'. Breaking from existing guilt- and shame-based accounts, I argue that social-regret can be a fitting, expressive, and revelatory reactive attitude that opens the way for deliberation over accountability for others' harms. When we feel social-regret, our attention is directed towards the moral salience of our social relations and the expectations that undergird them, as well as possibilities for ameliorative action. I consider several existing accounts of affiliated onlookers' emotions (including embarrassment, guilt, and shame), and I highlight the advantages of supplementing these with a regret-based account. Social-regret provides a novel way to understand negative, self-directed emotions in response to others' harms as rational, expressive, and potentially reason-giving experiences. American consumers tip $36bn annually, predominantly using small sums of cash. Yet, little is known about how the denominations of cash affect tipping behavior. In contrast to existing findings on the spending of different denominations (i.e., the denomination effect), we posit that consumers are less likely to tip smaller (vs. larger) denominations (e.g., $1 in 4 × 25¢ coins vs. a $1 banknote) to the same total value. We term this the "denomination‐tipping" effect and predict that it occurs because it is more embarrassing to tip with smaller denominations than larger denominations. Consistent with this prediction, we find across one field study and four online studies (N = 1402) that consumers are less likely to tip smaller (vs. larger) denominations, and that this "denomination‐tipping" effect is mediated by feelings of embarrassment regarding tipping smaller denominations. Our findings add to the literature on how cash denomination affects consumers' usage of money in the context of tipping, and we provide practical guidance on how service providers can minimize the adverse impact of smaller denominations on tips to their service staff. D. H. Lawrence is not usually viewed as a writer who was much concerned with, or sympathetic to, shyness. But shyness is structurally crucial to his exploration of emotion. His work echoes then-contemporary models for understanding shyness—from William James's "tender-mindedness" to Jung's "introversion," to the physiologist Angelo Mosso's idea of the "inner blush." Lawrence, suggesting the cognitive richness implicit in shyness, emphasizes the insights it offers into emotion, selfhood, and embodiment, even while he indicates that it might be too painful a state to be borne indefinitely. Although his own personal shyness became a quality that he had to discard as a writer, his work captures what it is to be at once invested in shyness and attempting to move beyond it. Debilitating fatigue is common in people living with kidney disease and often persists after a kidney transplant. Current understanding of fatigue is centered around pathophysiological processes. Little is known about the role of cognitive and behavioral factors. The aim of this study was to evaluate the contribution of these factors to fatigue among kidney transplant recipients (KTRs). A cross-sectional study of 174 adult KTRs who completed online measures of fatigue, distress, illness perceptions, and cognitive and behavioral responses to fatigue. Sociodemographic and illness-related information was also collected. 63.2% of KTRs experienced clinically significant fatigue. Sociodemographic and clinical factors explained 16.1% and 31.2% of the variance in the fatigue severity and fatigue impairment, respectively, increasing by 28% and 26.8% after adding distress. In adjusted models, all the cognitive and behavioral factors except for illness perceptions were positively associated with increased fatigue-related impairment, but not severity. Embarrassment avoidance emerged as a key cognition. In conclusion, fatigue is common following kidney transplantation and associated with distress and cognitive and behavioral responses to symptoms, particularly embarrassment avoidance. Given the commonality and impact of fatigue in KTRs, treatment is a clinical need. In Japan, many fathers consider their spouse to be their children's primary parent while casting themselves in a supporting role. Yet, in the majority of reported child maltreatment cases in Japan, the child's father is recorded as the perpetrator. This may seem somewhat puzzling, given that primary caregivers are recorded as the perpetrator of maltreatment in other cultures. This study qualitatively analyses the parenting experience of 11 Japanese fathers and their reflections on child maltreatment risks. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with fathers of pre-school aged children from middle-class families who had no reported history of child maltreatment. Using qualitative content analysis through a process of condensing, coding and categorising, we arrived at the following theme: fathers aspire to be an active parent, while respecting and supporting their spouses, but anxiety and stress trigger impatience and frustration during parenting. The fathers reported that they are more likely to maltreat their children, especially boys, in situations which triggered anxiety and frustration. Anxiety is particularly heightened when they feared public embarrassment. These findings are discussed with reference to the Japanese social and cultural context, and contrasted with previous research into the parenting experiences of Japanese mothers. The findings indicate that fathers may benefit from tailored support programmes which strengthen their self-efficacy before building resilience for the challenging situations they may encounter as fathers. Highlights: Japanese fathers at low risk for maltreatment were interviewed about their parenting experience. Social and professional barriers inhibit fathers' desire to be actively involved as parents. Participants' parenting ideals are threatened in stressful or anxiety-provoking situations. Objective The escalating challenges of drug and alcohol abuse underscore the critical need to prioritize Addiction-Affected Family members (AAFs), who face diverse health consequences and complex challenges. This study focuses on Addiction-Affected Mothers (AAMs) and their coping strategies during their child's substance abuse, aiming to explore their experiences during both the addiction and recovery periods. Materials & Methods Using interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA), nine AAMs, whose children had completed recovery, participated in semi-structured interviews. Purposive sampling ensured firsthand insights, with data analysis following IPA principles, including coding, categorization, and interpretation. Trustworthiness was maintained through member checking, peer debriefing, and ethical considerations. Results The data analysis and the codes extracted from the interviews revealed four main themes and 14 subthemes. The four main themes extracted from the data included 1. Social Isolation, 2. The Swamp Trails, 3. The Continuum of Injuries, and 4. The Pursuit of Freedom. The first three main themes contained 11 sub-themes reflecting the mothers' experiences caused by their child's addiction, and the fourth theme, containing 3 sub-themes, comprised of countermeasures and effective mechanisms employed to overcome addiction-caused problems. Conclusion The study provides evidence-based insights for enhanced services and policies targeting Addiction-Affected Mothers, who often initiate responses within families. Specialized interventions are crucial to address their unique needs and those of their families, minimizing the direct and indirect effects of addiction. Encouraging AAMs' participation in support sessions is vital for ongoing coping. Effective resources and strategies can facilitate long-term recovery for both individuals with substance abuse and their families, contributing to a deeper understanding of familial dynamics affected by addiction. Background: Adherence to inhalation therapy has direct relationship to the treatment outcome of asthma. Various patient-related factors such as lack of awareness, false beliefs, and embarrassment affect the usage of inhalers among asthmatics and also asthma control. Objectives: The objective of the study is to assess the knowledge, attitude, and practice of asthmatic patients toward inhaler use. The sociodemographic correlates for the same, the level of asthma control, proportion of patients using inhalers correctly were also assessed. Methodology: Asthma patients aged above 18 years and on inhaler treatment, attending outpatient department and inpatient department of a Medical College Hospital were included in the study. Global Initiative for Asthma guidelines were used to assess asthma control. Results: 130 patients participated in the study. Only 46.2% had prior knowledge about asthma, before their diagnosis. Only 35.4% preferred inhalers as choice before initiating their treatment. 68.5% had poor controlled asthma. 63.8% were regular in their follow-up visits and in using their prescribed inhalers. 63.8% had awareness about other forms of inhalers. 33.1% of patients felt that inhalers usage leads to addiction. 34.6% participants had concept that inhalers are only for serious illness/old age. High proportion of patients felt that inhalers are a lifelong measure (72.3%), inhalers are costlier compared to oral medicines for asthma (63.8%), and inhalers lead to complex side-effects (63.8%). 57.7% felt embarrassed to use inhalers in the public. On assessment, 37.7% had incorrect method of inhaler usage. Conclusion and Recommendations: High prevalence of false beliefs, misconceptions, and embarrassment about inhalers and its use among asthma patients was seen. Patient education in these aspects should be given for improving awareness of asthma and its treatment modalities, so as to achieve better disease control.

Body-related embarrassment (when an individual perceives they have publicly violated social standards involving the body's appearance or fitness) has been identified as an important and unique negative self-conscious emotion. However, a scale assessing body-related embarrassment has yet to be developed. The present study developed a body-related embarrassment measure and examined the psychometric properties using adult samples. In Study 1, initial items tapping appearance and fitness body-related embarrassment were generated, assessed with experts (N = 16), and refined. In Study 2, adults (N = 312; Mage = 23.62 ± 3.53 years) completed the six-item body-related embarrassment (BREM) scale and other negative body image measures. In Study 3, a separate sample of adults (N = 532; Mage = 28.01 ± 5.89 years) completed the BREM and several psychological scales. Findings demonstrated support for the theorized two-factor structure for body-related embarrassment (three-item appearance and three-item fitness subscales). Adequate internal consistency and construct validity were evidenced, and subscales were invariant across gender. Based on findings, the BREM can be used in research and practice settings to improve our understanding of appearance- and fitness-related embarrassment among adults and the unique antecedents and outcomes. Women experiencing homelessness are marginalized not only through their housing status but also through their access and ability to manage their menstrual health. Currently, there are no existing published reviews exploring this topic. This study aimed to begin closing that gap, by systematically reviewing the literature examining women's experiences of menstruation whilst being homeless. In June 2020 (and updated in December 2022), we conducted comprehensive and systematic searches of four electronic databases: Medline, Web of Science, CINAHL, and PsychINFO, from which nine studies were found. The findings were thematically analyzed, using the enhancing transparency in reporting the synthesis of qualitative research tools (ENTREQ) guidelines. Three themes related to menstrual experiences were found: (1) challenges in the logistics of managing menstruation while homeless, (2) feelings of embarrassment, shame, and dignity linked to maintaining menstrual health, and (3) making do: how people experiencing homelessness manage challenges related to menstruation. We discuss barriers women face in getting necessary products and in accessing private, safe, and clean facilities to manage menstrual health. The study found that women living with homelessness often abandon other basic needs in favor of managing menstruation (i.e. using unsuitable materials, stealing, etc.), which furthers their risk. The findings highlight the need for future research to investigate the experiences of women who are menstruating while being homeless and what support they would find helpful.
