Adsorption of fullerene C60 from solution to the external surface of zeolite particles has been investigated. The most intriguing result of this study was the nature of C60 adsorption to ultrastablized zeolite Y (or USY). Two commercial samples of USY were tested: CBV780 (Y780) and CBV901 (Y901). Y901 was shown in previous reports to be more hydrophobic than Y780. Higher affinity of C60 for Y901 was found relative to Y780 in a variety of hydrocarbon solvents, including toluene and cyclohexane. In these same solvents, weak or no affinity for Y901 of typical arenes such as naphthalene or pyrene was observed. In toluene, adsorption isotherms for C60 gave dissociation constants (and values of saturation binding) = 0.5 microM (5.8 micromol g(-1)) and 8 microM (1.4 micromol g(-1)) for Y901 and Y780, respectively. C60 was estimated to cover nearly one-half of the estimated external surface area of Y901 particles at saturation. Significant adsorption of C60 to the ionic zeolites NaX, NaY, and KL was observed in cyclohexane but not in toluene, consistent with the pi-cation effect as a driving force for adsorption to these materials. The main driving force for C60 adsorption to Y901 is postulated to involve the interaction of C60 with lone pair electrons of framework oxygen atoms of the 12-ring entry aperture to the supercage. In the 12-ring site, C60 is located in half-supercage bowls on the exterior particle surface. The adsorptive interaction on Y901 relies on the spherical shape of C60 and the hydrophobicity of the zeolite surface. On ionic zeolites, the presence of specific adsorption sites such as exchangeable cations and hydroxyl groups hinder the special positioning necessary for C60 interaction with the 12-ring site. The ground-state and triplet-state absorption spectrum of adsorbed C60 was solution-like on all zeolites. Quenching of the C60 triplet state was examined by using transient absorption spectroscopy. Rate constants for quenching by rubrene, ferrocene, and O2 at the Y901-toluene interface were 18, 9, and 3 times lower, respectively, relative to rate constants in solution. These differences point out that the approach of molecular quenchers to C60 at the interface is more hindered for larger molecules, an expected result for C60 located in half-supercage bowls. The high affinity of fullerenes for hydrophobic zeolite Y provides a strategy for organizing fullerenes at interfaces and for studies of fullerene photochemistry.

Fluorescence methodologies have been utilized to examine micropolarity, intramolecular motion, and singlet quenching in the intraparticle void volume of zeolites X, Y, and ultrastable Y (USY) interfaced with bathing polar solvents. Micropolarity was assessed from the 3-to-1 band ratio (III/I) of the fluorescence spectrum of pyrene (PY) and from lambda(max) of the fluorescence spectrum of 1-pyrenecarboxaldehyde (1-PCA). In zeolites bathed in anhydrous solvents, both PY and 1-PCA reported increased micropolarity according to the trend USY < bulk solvent < NaX approximately NaY. For example, in NaY (USY), III/I ranged from 0.44 (0.98) in acetonitrile to 0.52 (1.34) in n-hexanol, compared to 0.60, 1.06, and 1.62 in bulk acetonitrile (ACN), n-hexanol, and n-hexane, respectively. The polarity studies reveal that the ionic nature of NaX and NaY and the hydrophobic nature of USY strongly influence the microenvironment of the arene despite the presence of desorbing polar solvents. Constraints on intramolecular motion were examined in polar-solvated NaX through measurements of the fluorescence lifetime of trans-stilbene. Lifetimes ranged from 113 ps in NaX-ACN to 671 ps in NaX-tert-butyl alcohol. The latter value is close to that observed in bulk glycerol. Diffusion-controlled quenching of PY fluorescence by O2 and a series of nitrocompounds dissolved in solvents bathing the zeolite was examined by a time-resolved approach. For all of the quenchers and solvents studied, quenching was more efficient in USY compared to NaX and NaY. Interestingly, the rate of O2 quenching in USY-MeOH was only 12 times lower than that in bulk MeOH. In contrast, in NaY-MeOH and NaX-MeOH the rate of O2 quenching was too low to be measured. The rate constants in these systems were therefore taken as the rate constant for diffusion-controlled quenching of trapped electrons measured previously. These values were 600 times and 10(5) times lower than the rate of fluorescence quenching in USY-MeOH, respectively. The O2 quenching studies show that dispersive interactions of polar solvents with the cavity walls dominate in USY because of the hydrophobic nature of the USY surface. In NaX and NaY, stronger ion-dipole and hydrogen bonding interactions dominate and lead to more restricted access and lowered quenching efficiency. Perrin (or static) quenching of pyrene fluorescence was also examined to infer the concentration of nitromethane (NM) in the void volume of NaX and NaY bathed in MeOH, ACN, or H2O. The results indicate that access of NM to the interior of NaY is more inhibited in ACN compared to MeOH, presumably because of the higher dipole moment of ACN and its resulting stronger association with the zeolite surface. At similar levels of static quenching equated to a similar NM concentration in the zeolite, dynamic quenching by NM varied by no more than a factor of 2 in all systems compared. This implies that the rate of NM diffusion in solvated zeolite interiors is similar regardless of zeolite or solvent properties. In contrast to O2 diffusion in zeolites, NM exhibits a high dipole moment and can therefore migrate through polar-solvated zeolite apertures by adsorbing to the zeolite. Overall, the results of this study show a close relationship between the behavior of probes and quenchers in the confines of polar-solvated zeolite interiors and the chemical properties of the zeolite. Differences between weakly and strongly interacting surfaces are revealed clearly in the results.

Of current interest in our laboratory is the nature of photoinduced processes in the cavities of zeolites completely submerged in polar solvents, or polar-solvated zeolites (PSZ). The present study addresses the nature of electron trapping in PSZ with emphasis on the zeolites NaX and NaY. Free electrons were generated by two-photon, pulsed-laser excitation of either pyrene or naphthalene included in zeolite cavities. Trapped electrons were monitored by diffuse transmittance, transient absorption spectroscopy at visible wavelengths. In anhydrous alcohols, electron trapping by Na(4)(4+) ion clusters was observed in both NaX and NaY. The resulting trapped electrons decayed over the course of tens of milliseconds. No evidence for alcohol-solvated electrons was found. More varied results were observed in solvents containing water. In NaX submerged in CH(3)OH containing 5% or higher water, species having microsecond lifetimes characteristic of solvated electrons were observed. By contrast, a 2 h exposure of NaY to 95/5 CH(3)OH/H(2)O had no effect on electron trapping relative to anhydrous CH(3)OH. The difference between NaX and NaY was explained by how fast water migrates into the sodalite cage. Prolonged exposure to water at room temperature or exposure to water at elevated temperatures was necessary to place water in the sodalite cages of NaY and deactivate Na(4)(4+) as an electron trap. Additional studies in NaY revealed that solvent clusters eventually become lower energy traps than Na(4)(4+) as the water content in methanol increases. In acetonitrile-water mixtures, electron trapping by Na(4)(4+) was eliminated and no equivalent species characteristic of solvated electrons in methanol-water mixtures was observed. This result was explained by the formation of low energy solvated electrons which cannot be observed in the visible region of the spectrum. Measurements of the rate of O(2) quenching in anhydrous solvents revealed rate constants for the quenching of ion cluster trapped electrons that were 2-4 times higher than that for pyrene triplets. In NaX, the rate constant in methanol was 10(4) times smaller than that in cyclohexane, showing greater inhibition of O(2) reactivity in the medium of PSZ. The results of this study point out the conditions under which Na(4)(4+) is active as an electron trap in PSZ and that water must be present in the sodalite cage to produce solvated electrons in the supercage.

This manuscript briefly reviews the photochemistry of organic molecules on porous silica (or SiO2). To gain an understanding of the chemistry on silica, data are displayed and discussed with respect to studies in homogeneous solution. In particular, the exact dimensionality of kinetic processes on porous SiO2 is a matter for debate. Hence, units of concentration of an adsorbate on the surface are expressed as moles per nanometer squared and as moles per liter, in order to compare with solution. Many studies show that organic molecules adsorb to SiO2 via the surface silanol (or surface hydroxyl OH) groups. The adsorption is heterogeneous, due to various clusters of silanol groups and to charge transfer (CT) sites. Photophysical studies clearly show these effects. The photo-induced reactions on SiO2 may be described by 'fractal' approaches, but a 'Gaussian' approach is often more useful to the photochemist. Photo-induced reactions occur via movement of the reactants on the surface, as in the case of the Langmuir-Hinshelwood (LH) mechanism or, as in the case of the Eley-Rideal (ER) mechanism, by bombardment of a surface bound excited state by a gaseous reactant, such as O2. Quenching of excited singlet states by O2 produces excited triplet states, which in turn are quenched to give singlet molecular oxygen. At room temperature the O2 quenching process on silica occurs by both mechanisms to approximately the same extent. However, the LH mechanism is dominant at lower temperatures and the ER mechanism is dominant at higher temperatures. Some quenchers, including carbon tetrachloride and tetranitromethane only quench by the LH mechanism giving rise to static quenching and chloro or nitro derivatives of the excited state. Photo-induced electron transfer between excited arenes and amines occurs readily, but the ionic products are short-lived compared to solution. This is due to the limited diffusion of the products on the surface, which in turn promotes back-electron transfer. Photoionization of arenes occurs on SiO2 via a two-photon process and gives very long-lived ions compared to solution. This is due to trapping of the photo-produced electrons by the SiO2 itself. Finally, the effects of co-adsorbants, including solvents, surfactants, and polymers, in photoreactions at the SiO2 surface are considered. The review ends with suggestions for future studies.

Spread phospholipid monolayers are particularly useful as model membranes in that changes in surface pressure (Deltapi) can be monitored in response to protein adsorption to the monolayer, thus providing a unique manner of assessing protein-membrane contact. In the present study, spread monolayers below their collapse pressures have been utilized to evaluate Ca2+-specific adsorption of several vitamin K-dependent coagulation proteins to monolayers that contain negatively charged phospholipid. From combined measurements of Deltapi and Gamma (the surface excess protein concentration), values of dGamma/dpi have been evaluated for different proteins with varying lipid composition of the monolayers. Using mixed, liquid-expanded monolayers at equivalent initial surface pressures (pii) and which contain different amounts of phosphatidylserine, phosphatidylcholine, and phosphatidylethanolamine, the dGamma/dpi of bovine prothrombin was shown to decrease monotonically with increasing protein affinity for the monolayer. For example, KD values of 7, 20, and 60 nM produced dGamma/dpi values of 14, 17, and 21 nmol m-1 mN-1, respectively. However, the trend in dGamma/dpi appears to originate from characteristics of the monolayer and not from those of the protein, since a much different adsorbate (i.e., a positively charged pyrene derivative) exhibited a similar trend in dGamma/dpi with monolayer composition. On the other hand, dGamma/dpi values of bovine prothrombin, human factor IX, human protein S, bovine protein C, and human protein C, determined using liquid-expanded phosphatidylserine monolayers, were essentially equivalent. Therefore, the five vitamin K-dependent proteins that were examined were equivalent in terms of the manner in which the gamma-carboxyglutamic acid (Gla) domain of each protein perturbed the surface pressure. This study shows that Ca2+-specific membrane contact sites in the Gla domain of the five proteins tested are similar despite the naturally occurring differences in the normal Gla domain sequence of these proteins.

The interaction of bovine prothrombin with phospholipids was measured, using as the lipid source monolayers spread at the air-buffer interface. Fluorescence spectroscopy was implemented to determine the equilibrium concentration of free prothrombin in the aqueous subphase of the protein-monolayer suspensions, in a continuous assay system. The increase in surface pressure (pi) from the protein-monolayer adsorption was also measured and, with values of the adsorbed protein concentration (c[s]), was used to calculate dc(s)/d(pi). At a particular phosphatidylserine (PS) content of liquid-expanded (LE) phosphatidylcholine (PC)/PS monolayers, dc(s)/d(pi) was independent of the initial surface pressure (pi[i]), when this latter value exceeded 30 mN/m. However, dc(s)/d(pi) varied significantly with the relative PS content of the monolayer. Values of the equilibrium dissociation constants calculated from the concentration dependence of delta(pi) indicated that the affinity of prothrombin for LE monolayers was higher at higher PS contents and lower packing densities. The affinity of prothrombin for liquid-condensed (LC) PC/PS monolayers was found to be much weaker relative to LE monolayers of similar phospholipid composition. This approach, employing spread monolayers to study prothrombin-phospholipid binding, coupled with a simple and accurate method to determine the free protein concentration in protein-monolayer suspensions, offers significant advantages for the investigation of protein-membrane interaction. The equilibrium characteristics that describe the interaction of prothrombin with the different phospholipid monolayers under various conditions also provide support for previous results which indicated that hydrophobic interactions are involved in the adsorption of vitamin K-dependent coagulation and anticoagulation proteins to model membrane systems.
