Abstract

The safe storage of plutonium in the form of plutonium oxide (PuO[sub2]) is a major concern in countries with significant plutonium inventories. The goal is to stabilize and package oxide in such a way that the possibility of leaks and failures are unlikely. Currently in Russia, PuO[sub2] is stored at the Mining and Chemical Combine (MCC, Zheleznogorsk) and at the Siberian Chemical Combine (SCC, former Tomsk-7). (Plutonium metal is stored at PA 'Mayak' and is not addressed here). Current storage containers for Russian PuO[sub2] do not meet modern safety requirements. Further, every three years the gaskets have to be replaced. The containers can become overpressurized due to radiation processes, and this results in possible container failures. In the U.S., PuO[sub2] is present at several Department of Energy (DOE) sites. U.S. reports of long-time storage of PuO[sub2] show a few cases of storage container failures among thousands of intact cases. Major causes of malfunction are metal oxidation in nonairtight packages and gas pressurization from inadequately stabilized oxide. Because of these failures, the U.S. DOE adopted a standard for stabilization, packaging and storage of plutonium-bearing material that addresses these vulnerabilities. Research programs both in Russia and the U.S. continue to evaluate metal corrosion, gas generation (e.g., Reference 6), and interaction of PuO[sub2] with residual water (e.g., Reference 7) that may contribute to package failure. Abstract

The article asserts that the U.S. Department of Energy has no uniform requirements for packaging and storage of nuclear materials other than those declared excess and packaged to DOE-STD-3013-2000. The article describes a methodology for prioritizing nuclear material containers so that the highest risk containers are repackaged first. The methodology utilizes expert judgment to assign respirable fractions and reactivity factors to accountable levels of nuclear material at the U.S. Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). A relative risk factor is assigned to each nuclear material container based on a calculated dose to a worker due to a failed container barrier and a calculated probability of container failure based on material reactivity and container age.

Abstract

Because of their rapid dissolution of many actinide metals and refractory oxides, superacids such as HSO3F/SbF5 have potential applications in actinide processing. However, material compatibility must first be addressed because of the highly corrosive nature of superacids. Abstract

Chromyl fluoride provides a nonconducting solution in anhydrous hydrogen fluoride with Raman spectroscopic features indistinguishable from those of the solute in the gas phase, indicating no fluoride or proton transfer in solution. With increasing acidity in the SbF5–HF solvent system, CrO2F2forms cationic species, the nature of which is discussed. The acidity-dependence of cationic speciation in HF–TaF5and in HF–AsF5is consistent with that in HF–SbF5. 44. Anticonvulsive drugs and blood levels of lactate pyruvate and glucose in children with seizures

Abstract

Lactate, pyruvate, and glucose were determined in groups of 10 patients, each receiving single drug therapy for their seizure disorder with either phenytoin, valproic acid, carbamazepine, or phenobarbital, and in patients not taking medication. All drug levels were in their therapeutic ranges. The characteristics of the groups were similar, except for the phenytoin group being significantly older. No significant differences were found in glucose or pyruvate concentrations. However, patients on valproic acid had reduced lactate (p< 0.05) and L/P ratios (p< 0.05). The reduction in lactate in patients on valproate therapy may mask inborn errors of metabolism that normally result in an increase in blood lactate levels.
