No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2019-01-01 The DMRT3 gene has been described as the main gene influencing gait in horses; however, most studies have examined its effects by comparing information from trotted and gaited individuals. Within the Brazilian Mangalarga Marchador breed, animals can present two types of gaits (marcha batida and marcha picada), which differ in the movement form diagonal (marcha batida) or lateral (marcha picada). We examined a possible association of the g.22999655C>A DMRT3 SNP with the type of gait, in this two-gaits breed. The relationship between individuals was calculated for the two phenotypic groups, as well as the inbreeding coefficient and its trend over generations. The allelic and genotypic frequencies were estimated based on genotype data from 310 horses (205 marcha batida; 105 marcha picada).Two threshold models were used to determine the proportion of phenotypic variance explained by DMRT3 genotypes. The average coancestry for animals with marcha batida was 0.04 ± 0.00, whereas in marcha picada it was 0.05 ± 0.01 (higher than the population mean of 0.04 ± 0.00). The inbreeding coefficient was 1.71% and 3.48% for marcha batida and marcha picada animals, respectively. Effects of the DMRT3 gene ranged from 9.94 to 10.77% (as a proportion of phenotypic variance) when included as an uncorrelated random effect and as a covariable, respectively. The genotypic frequencies of the DMRT3 and the patterns of kinship and inbreeding could be a result of selection in this breed, resulting in statistical confusion between the DMRT3 effects and population structure. The objectives of this study were to characterize the allelic and genotypic frequencies of polymorphisms in the μ-calpain and calpastatin genes, and to assess their association with meat tenderness and animal growth in Nellore cattle. We evaluated 605 Nellore animals at 24 months of age, on average, at slaughter. The polymorphisms were determined for the molecular markers CAPN316, CAPN530, CAPN4751, CAPN4753, and UOGACAST1. Analyses of meat tenderness at 7, 14, and 21 days of maturation were performed in samples of longissimus thoracis obtained between the 12th and 13th rib and sheared using a Warner Bratzler Shear Force. Significant effects were observed for meat tenderness at days 7, 14, and 21 of maturation for the marker CAPN4751, at day 21 for the marker CAPN4753, and at days 14 and 21 for the marker UOGCAST1. For genotypic combinations of markers, the results were significant for the combination CAPN4751/UOGCAST1 in the three maturation periods and CAPN4753/UOGCAST1 at days 14 and 21 of maturation. The sexual precocity and fertility of bovines have great impact on the economic success of commercial cattle herds, where some reproductive traits have been adopted as selection criteria. However, the majority of these traits depend on reproductive events of the females and, with exception of the scrotal circumference, few studies approach others andrological traits. The estimation of heritabilities and genetic correlations of testicular and seminal traits and also sexual behaviour, will allow to provide alternatives for the design of more appropriate selection strategies for fertility, together with other economic traits. &nbsp, La precocidad sexual y fertilidad tienen gran impacto en el éxito económico de los rebaños bovinos comerciales, en que las características reproductivas han sido adoptadas como criterios de selección. Sin embargo, la mayoría de estas características dependen de eventos reproductivos de las hembras y, con excepción del perímetro escrotal, pocos estudios abordan las características andrológicas. Las estimaciones de las heredabilidades y correlaciones genéticas de las características testiculares y seminales, además del comportamiento sexual, podrán proveer alternativas para la elaboración de estrategias más adecuadas de selección para fertilidad, en conjunto con las demás características de interés económico. &nbsp

No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2012-04-01 The present work aimed to estimate heritability and genetic correlations of reproductive features of Nellore bulls, offspring of mothers classified as superprecocious (M1), precocious (M2) and normal (M3). Twenty one thousand hundred and eighty-six animals with average age of 21.29 months were used, evaluated through the breeding soundness evaluation from 1999 to 2008. The breeding soundness features included physical semen evaluation (progressive sperm motility and sperm vigour), semen morphology (major, minor and total sperm defects), scrotal circumference (SC), testicular volume (TV) and SC at 18 months of age (SC18). The components of variance, heritability and genetic correlations for and between the features were estimated simultaneously by restricted maximum likelihood, with the use of the vce software system vs 6. The heritability estimates were high for SC18, SC and TV (0.43, 0.63 and 0.54; 0.45, 0.45 and 0.44; 0.42, 0.45 and 0.41, respectively for the categories of mothers M1, M2 and M3) and low for physical and morphological semen aspects. The genetic correlations between SC18 and SC were high, as well as between these variables with TV. High and positive genetic correlations were recorded among SC18, SC and TV with the physical aspects of the semen, although no favourable association was verified with the morphological aspects, for the three categories of mothers. It can be concluded that the mothers sexual precocity did not affect the heritability of their offspring reproduction features. The objective of this study was to estimate genetic parameters for pre-weaning traits of Braunvieh cattle raised under tropical conditions in Brazil. The weight and weight gain parameters were birth weight (BW, N = 9955), weight at 120 days of age (W120, N = 5901), weaning weight at 205 days (WW, N = 6970), weight gain from birth to 205 days (GAIN205, N = 6013), weight gain from birth to 120 days (GAIN120, N = 5135), and weight gain from 120 to 205 days (GAIN85, N = 4482). Variance components were estimated using the animal model with the MTDFREML software. The relationship matrix included 35,188 animals; phenotypic measures were available for 18,688. Direct and maternal heritability increased from birth to weaning, with estimates of 0.23 +/- 0.037, 0.25+/- 0.050, 0.41+/- 0.059 for direct heritability for BW, W120 and WW, respectively, 0.08 +/- 0.012, 0.15 +/- 0.032, 0.22 +/- 0.036 for maternal genetic effects, and 0.18, 0.14 and 0.16 for total heritability estimates. For pre-weaning gains, estimates of heritability were 0.36 +/- 0.059, 0.30+/- 0.059, 0.12 +/- 0.035 for direct genetic effects of the traits GAIN205, GAIN120 and GAIN85, respectively, 0.23 +/- 0.038, 0.17 +/- 0.037, 0.03 +/- 0.029 for estimates of maternal heritability, and 0.12, 0.13, 0.16 for total heritability, respectively. Genetic correlations between weights were greater between measures taken at shorter intervals. This information can be used to optimize the design of programs for genetic improvement of Braunvieh cattle raised under tropical conditions.

Foram analisados 39.212 registros para peso à desmama e 16.546 registros para peso aos 12 meses e ganho de peso até 160 dias pós-desmama, com a finalidade de avaliar a utilização de metodologia para discriminar estimativas de parâmetros de adaptabilidade e estabilidade fenotípicas. Nove composições genotípicas foram distribuídas em seis ambientes para peso à desmama. Para peso aos 12 meses e ganho de peso até 160 dias pós-desmama, utilizaram-se cinco ambientes. As estimativas de médias, desvios-padrão e coeficientes de variação para peso à desmama, peso aos 12 meses e ganho de peso até 160 dias pós-desmama foram: 204,3± 22,6kg e 11,1%; 280,4± 25,9kg e 9,2% e l64,8± 18,1kg e 28,0%, respectivamente. Verificou-se dependência entre principais combinações genotípicas e ambientes avaliados, o que impediu a recomendação geral das melhores combinações genotípicas para todos os ambientes. As análises de adaptabilidade mostraram ser eficientes em discriminar o comportamento das combinações genotípicas dentro de cada ambiente avaliado. Data from 39,212 weaning weights and 16,546 yearling weights and weight gain from weaning to 160 days after weaning, were used to evaluate a methodology to discriminate estimates of phenotypic adaptability and stability. Nine genotypic compositions distributed in six environments for weaning weight, and in five environments for yearling weight and weight gain from weaning to 160 days post weaning, were analyzed. The averages, standard deviations and coefficients of variation for weaning weight, yearling weight and weight gain from weaning to 160 days post weaning were: 204.3± 22.6kg and 11.1%; 280.4± 25.9kg and 9.2%; and l64.8± 18.1kg and 28%, respectively. The genotype by environment interaction suggests that the best genotype combinations can not be recommended for all the environments. The adaptability analysis was efficient to discriminate genotype combination within environment.
