Beam exit windows are crucial components of any particle accelerator as they provide an interface between the beamline vacuum and target material at atmospheric media. For high beam power machines, special materials and designs are required to withstand high radiation and mechanical loads, while minimizing energy loss during transition and maximizing window lifetime. This research investigates the impact of electron beam exposure to bulk CrMnV and CrMnTiV high entropy alloys (HEAs) with the primary goal of identifying suitable candidate materials for the design of robust and durable exit window settings. The selection criteria include intrinsic characteristics, power dissipation, and mechanical responses. According to the thermodynamic calculations, both equiatomic CrMnV and the addition of 7% of Ti with equiatomic CrMnV yield solid-solutions phases. The structural and mechanical properties of CrMnV and CrMnTiV samples were tested using field emission scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, scanning electron microcopy with energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy, x-ray diffraction, and nanoindentation before and after exposure to a dose of ∼66 kGy from a 10 MeV e-beam accelerator. Despite exhibiting beam transmission characteristics comparable to Cr and V, the indentation hardness of HEAs exceeded that of the Cr and V samples by five to six times. The examination of the CrMnTiV irradiated samples revealed organized deformation patterns depicting new features, which we suspect twinning and twin boundaries due to the addition of Ti to CrMnV. For microscale gaps, DC breakdown voltage is described theoretically and through simulation by accounting for field emission generated electrons and the subsequent ionization of neutral gas and ion-induced secondary electron emission. Here, we extend DC microscale breakdown theory to AC. Particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations show that breakdown voltage V varies linearly with gap distance d independent of frequency and the ion-induced secondary electron coefficient γ S E for d ≲ 4 μ m , where field emission dominates breakdown over ionization and avalanche. For d ≳ 4 μ m and γ S E = 0 , DC breakdown voltage increases linearly with d; for γ S E = 0.05 , DC breakdown voltage decreases to a minimum before beginning to increase at larger gap distances. For AC fields with γ S E = 0.05 , V behaves similarly to the DC case with the decrease corresponding to secondary emission occurring at higher voltages and larger gap distances with increasing frequency. At 10 GHz and γ S E = 0.05 , V resembles that of the DC case with γ S E = 0 up to ∼8 μm, suggesting that increasing the frequency effectively changes the number of ions striking the electrodes and the resulting electrons released. Phase space plots showing electron and ion velocities as a function of position across the gap show that electrons and ions are increasingly trapped within the gap with increasing frequency, reducing the number of ions that can strike the cathode and the subsequent secondary emission. Incorporating the resulting effective secondary emission coefficient for AC microscale gaps yields a simple phenomenologically based modification of the DC microscale gas breakdown equation. Field emission is an important process with a variety of applications. Quantitative predictions of such electron emission need to include details of the internal potentials that shape the electronic wavefunctions (and hence the tunneling probability), predictive analysis of the work function barrier (ΦB), and knowledge of the electron distribution at the surface that constitutes the supply function. Here, these various factors were all collectively considered based on a combined Monte Carlo-density functional theory approach. Results were obtained for both the field-dependent cold electron emission current density as well as photoemission from a short laser pulse. The method also allows for calculations of field-dependent emittance. Excess emission has been observed from velvet cathodes with total emission times >150 ns. In this diode experiment, we produce a sub-relativistic electron beam with the ability to consistently change γ from 1.2 to 1.5 and β = 0.5–0.75. Electron emission in this particular diode geometry requires electric fields >40 kV/cm. The current increases at steady rates >0.05 A/ns after the head of the pulse, indicating an expansion of the emission surface and reduction in the effective AK gap. Small transients of excess emission (or arcs) are consistently observed for current pulses exceeding 150 ns. The excess emission results in beam loaded levels ≥ 10 kV on the diode voltage. The effects described here are compounded as diode voltage is increased. The principal objective of these experiments is to quantify electric field emission thresholds, current ramps, excess emission delays, effective beam loading, and impedance collapse. Nitrogen-incorporated ultrananocrystalline diamond [(N)UNCD] pyramid tip cathode has been considered as a next-generation high peak current electron source for dielectric laser accelerators as well as other high peak current particle accelerator applications. In this work, we study non-linear photoemission from an (N)UNCD pyramid tip cathode using an ultrafast laser with the pulse length of 150 fs with the central wavelength of 800 nm in the peak intensity range of 10 9 – 10 10 W / cm 2. We demonstrated that as the incident laser intensity increases, the current emitted from the nano-tip first increases as a power function with an exponent of about 5 and then starts to roll over to an exponent of 3. This roll over is attributed to the Coulomb interaction between electrons emitted from the tip also known as the space charge. We also measured the photoemission electron energy spectra that show electrons with energies as high as ∼ 10 eV. Based on the shape of the electron energy spectra, we conclude that the high-energy electrons are thermally emitted electrons due to ultrafast laser heating at the tip of the (N)UNCD pyramid tip cathode. The micro-discharge effect limits the development of high-frequency microwave power components to miniaturization and integration. Therefore, it has become a focus of research to effectively suppress the micro-discharge effect, increase the micro-discharge threshold, and strengthen the environmental stability of high-frequency microwave devices. In this study, different elemental ratios of carbon (C)/silver (Ag)/titanium (Ti) composite films were obtained by multi-target magnetron co-sputtering technology and then systematically analyzed for micro-discharge effects. When the doping ratio of C/Ag/Ti was 3.538/1/0.013, the corresponding maximum secondary electron emission coefficient (δmax) decreased to 1.01 owing to the suppression of secondary electron emission by the increase in the content of sp2 hybrid bond. The micro-discharge threshold of Ku band waveguide filters coated with moderate C/Ag/Ti composite films showed an optimal performance of 10 000−12 500 W, which was increased by approximately 20 times. Moreover, the microstructure of the composite films exhibited higher density and flatness with a tiny increase in the titanium doping ratio, representing good environmental stability. Thus, the effective suppression of the secondary electron emission yield, significant improvement in the micro-discharge threshold, and enhancement of the environment stability of microwave components could be realized simultaneously by reasonably controlling the content of titanium in silver and titanium co-doped carbon-based composite films. Ion-induced electron emission (IIEE) is an important process whereby ions impinging on a material surface lead to net emission of electrons into the vacuum. While relevant for multiple applications, IIEE is a critical process of electric thruster (ET) operation and testing for space propulsion, and, as such, it must be carefully quantified for safe and reliable ET performance. IIEE is a complex physical phenomenon, which involves a number of ion-material and ion-electron processes, and is a complex function of ion mass, energy, and angle, as well as host material properties, such as mass and electronic structure. In this paper, we develop a discrete model of kinetic IIEE to gain a more accurate picture of the electric thruster chamber and facility material degradation processes. The model is based on three main developments: (i) the use of modern electronic and nuclear stopping databases, (ii) the use of the stopping and range of ions in matter to track all ion and recoil trajectories inside the target material, and (iii) the use of a scattering Monte Carlo approach to track the trajectories of all mobilized electrons from the point of first energy transfer until full thermalization or escape. This represents a substantial advantage in terms of physical accuracy over existing semi-analytical models commonly used to calculate kinetic IIEE. We apply the model to Ar, Kr, and Xe irradiation of W and Fe surfaces and calculate excitation spectra as a function of ion depth, energy, and angle of incidence. We also obtain minimum threshold ion energies for net nonzero yield for each ion species in both Fe and W and calculate full IIEE yields as a function of ion energy and incidence angle. The importance of microwave device reliability and performance for microscale devices motivates a more fundamental understanding of breakdown mechanisms in this regime. Microwave breakdown theories predict breakdown when electron production balances electron loss. Electron production depends strongly on the ionization rate ν i ; however, previous studies either used the measured ν i in macroscale gaps or the empirical formula for DC voltage, inaccurately predicting ν i in microscale gaps. Alternatively, this work characterizes ν i in microwave microplasmas by using particle-in-cell simulations. We calculated ν i in argon gas at atmospheric pressure for 2–10 μm gaps under AC fields ranging from 1 to 1000 GHz. The behavior of ν i may be separated into two regimes by defining a critical frequency f c r that depends on the amplitude of the applied voltage, gap distance, and pressure. For frequency f < f c r , the electrodes collect the electrons during each cycle and the electron number oscillates with the electric field, causing ν i / f to roughly scale with the reduced effective field E e f f / p. For f > --> f c r , the phase-space plots indicate that the electrons are confined inside the gap, causing the electron number to grow exponentially and v i / p to become a function of E e f f / p. These results elucidate the ionization mechanism for AC fields at microscale gap distances and may be incorporated into field emission-driven microwave breakdown theories to improve their predictive capability. A dimensional method was employed to evaluate the microscale gas breakdown characteristics at atmospheric pressure, resulting in a universal breakdown curve applicable to different types of gases (e.g., Ar, Xe, Ne, and N 2). As the gap distance decreases, the breakdown mode transitions from ion-induced secondary electron emission to the field emission regime. In the field emission regime, the positive space charge effect becomes more significant. We discovered that incorporating the positive space charge effect in the field emission regime can be achieved by modifying the local electric field enhancement factor β. Consequently, we propose an effective electric field enhancement factor, β eff , which scales linearly with β , to accurately reproduce the breakdown curve while considering the positive space charge effect. This proposed approach significantly simplifies the numerical model. Diamond films possess numerous extraordinary physical and chemical properties, but their high-temperature applications are limited by its poor thermal stability. Herein, we fabricated the undoped microcrystalline diamond (MCD) film and heavy boron-doped diamond (h-BDD-1, 2.94 × 1021 atoms·cm−3; h-BDD-2, 9.10 × 1021 atoms·cm−3) films to investigate the effect of boron doping on the thermal stability of diamond films. A series of evidences, including air annealing experiments, thermogravimetric-differential scanning calorimetry (TG-DSC) analysis, and in-situ ultra-high-temperature confocal laser-scanning microscope (CLSM), demonstrated that the thermal stability of diamond films was obviously enhanced by boron doping. Consequently, the h-BDD-2 film exhibited the best thermal stability with an initial oxidation temperature above 900 °C, which was much higher than that of MCD film (709 °C). By deconvolving the X-ray photoelectron spectra, we believed that the transition of B–C bonds to stable oxy-boron carbide complexes (B 4 O–C, B 3 O–C) is the key to improving the thermal stability. Computational experiments were carried out to find a tiny sensor that can detect the Lomustine (LT) drug. The experiments studied how the sensor interacts with regular and aluminum-doped boron nitride sheets (BN-yne and Al-BN). The calculations reveal that the LT medication mainly attaches to the B atom in the BN-yne molecule through its NO group, and the binding energy is −5.2 kcal/mol. Using the LT drug only changes the electronic features of the original BN-yne sheet a little. Replacing a B atom with an Al atom in the –B = N– connection significantly enhances the reactivity and responsiveness of the BN-yne sheet to the LT drug. The electrical conductivity increases because the energy gap of Al-BN decreases from 4.81 to 3.08 eV. Moreover, its work function (Φ) has been significantly reduced from 3.51 to 2.55 eV, which causes an increment in the field emission electron current. Eventually, what is expected is a short recovery time of 3.9 sec for the desorption of LT from the Al-BN surface. Cryolite-type materials have advantages of low phonon energy, easy rare-earth ion doping, and stable physicochemical properties, and they are considered ideal matrices for up-converting luminescent materials. In this paper, a series of K 3 LuF 6 :Er3+,Yb3+ up-converting materials with cryolite structure were prepared for the first time by high-temperature solid-phase method. The compositions, structures and luminescent properties were systematically characterized by X-ray powder diffractometry (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and fluorescence spectroscopy (PL). Under 980 nm excitation, the sample emission spectra mainly consisted of green and red emission bands with peaks at 525, 546 and 662 nm, corresponding to the 2H 11/2 -4I 15/2 , 4S 3/2 -4I 15/2 and 4F 9/2 -4I 15/2 electron transitions of Er3+, respectively. In addition, the temperature sensing characteristics of two thermally coupled energy levels (2H 2/11 and 4S 3/2) were studied based on the fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) technique in the range of 79–579 K. All the results show that K 3 LuF 6 :Er3+/Yb3+ up-converting luminescent materials have excellent temperature sensing performance in the ultra-wide temperature range and have broad application prospects in the field of temperature sensing. Microplastic degradation by bacteria can degrade low-density polyethylene (LDPE). This study aimed to analyze the potential of Ambon Bay bacteria for microplastic degradation, the condition of microplastics after degradation, and identification of the potential for microplastic degradation. The results of isolation revealed as many as 20 bacterial isolates, which correlated with physicochemical conditions in the waters of Ambon Bay. Nine of them could degrade microplastics as indicated by the presence of a clear zone, namely KA1, KA2, KA3, KA4, KA5, KA9, KA10, KS6, and KS8. They were checked for biofilm formation, microplastic hydrophobicity, and percentage of microplastic weight reduction. Four isolates with the highest percentage of microplastic weight reduction on day 40 were KA1, KA2, KA3, and KA10 at 36.19%, 10.16%, 28.39%, and 17.07%, respectively. The results of LDPE microplastic degradation showed differences using field emission scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectroscopy (FESEM/EDS), attenuated total reflection-fourier transform infrared (ATRFTIR), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The bacterial isolates identified were KA1 (Bacillus cereus), KA2 (Bacillus toyonesis), KA3 (Bacillus paramycoides), and KA10 (Escherichia coli). Indigenous bacteria from the waters of Ambon Bay have the potential to degrade LDPE microplastics, which causes structural changes, decreased crystallinity, weight, and C=C groups in microplastics after degradation, with bacterial isolate KA1 identified as Bacillus cereus showing the best potential with degradation of LDPE microplastics by 36.19%. In this study, iron oxide nanofins (Fe2O3 NFs) were synthesized using Elaeocarpus hygrophilus leaves extract and decorated on graphitic carbon nitride (gCN) substrate to form the Fe2O3/gCN composite, as a photocatalytic candidate to degrade Rhodamine B (RhB) and produce hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). The morphological, structural, electrochemical, and optical properties of Fe2O3/gCN were determined via analytical methods, including scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray, scanning electron microscopy field emission, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, photoluminescence spectroscopy, ultraviolet–visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-DRS), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and photocurrent repones. As a result, the band gap of Fe2O3/gCN was determined to be 2.79 eV through UV-DRS and Kubelka–Munk function, which is lower than that of pure gCN (2.82 eV). Such phenomenon provides an RhB photodegradation efficiency of 99.23% within 120 min at pH 4, as well as an H2O2 concentration of 4237.03 μM/g h under visible light radiation, over the 1.0Fe2O3/gCN sample. Further insights elucidate that ⋅O2– plays an important part in the photocatalysis, contributing to light-driven RhB degradation and H2O2 production. The catalytic performance of 1.0Fe2O3/gCN was also maintained after 4 consecutive cycles, which indicates a high potential for environmental remediation and cleaner production processes using light as the driving force. This work shows considerable advance in combining the exceptional properties of chemical vapor deposition (CVD) diamond with the toughness of steel, a subject that has been sought since the early 1990s. Combining both the previously developed techniques for vanadium carbide (VC) deposition, namely laser cladding vanadium carbide (LCVC) and thermo-reactive deposition (TRD) in a salt bath, made it possible to achieve the deposition of a CVD diamond film on a D6 tool steel, with a very low stress level of 1.8 ± 0.1 GPa. This was the lowest value for growth at 750 °C substrate temperature. The LCVC step was a fast processing to thicken the VC layer, while the short-term TRD (only 1 hour) closed the cracks left in the LCVC coating, relieved the residual stresses resulting from the rapid solidification after the laser incidence, and promoted a phase transformation from V8C7 to V6C5, a phase with lower thermal expansion coefficient. Hot Filament Chemical Vapor Deposition (HFCVD) was used to perform the CVD diamond deposition. The vanadium carbide layer has been an intermediate layer capable of acting as an excellent diffusion barrier and able to satisfactorily mitigate the thermal stress of the CVD diamond. The samples were characterized by Scanning Electron Microscopy with Field Emission Gun (FEG-SEM) equipped with Energy-Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffractometry, Rockwell A (588.6 N) indentation tester. Nitrate pollution of water emerging from various anthropogenic activities has become a major environmental concern because of its deleterious effects on natural water resources. The present work deals with the synthesis of the ternary nanocomposite based on chitosan, iron oxide (Fe3O4), and titanium dioxide (TiO2) and its application for the removal of nitrates from model-contaminated water. Fe3O4 derived through a coprecipitation method was incorporated into the chitosan matrix which was fabricated in the form of beads. The wet gel beads were then successfully coated with sol–gel-derived silver-doped titanium dioxide sol followed by drying under suitable conditions to get the functional nanocomposite beads. The synthesized functional materials were further characterized for their structural, morphological, and textural features using X-ray diffraction analysis, physical property measurement (PPMS), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) analysis, UV visible spectroscopy analysis (UV–vis), BET surface area analysis (BET), field emission scanning electron microscopic (FESEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis. The ternary nanocomposites were further used for the removal of nitrates via adsorption cum photocatalytic reduction technique from the model contaminated water when subjected to an adsorption study under dark conditions and photocatalytic study under UV/visible/sunlight for a definite time. Fe3O4 in the nanocomposite provides enhanced adsorption features whereas the functional coating of titanium dioxide aids in the removal of nitrates through the photocatalytic reduction technique. The functional beads containing 3% Fe3O4 in the wet gel form (CTA-F3) have excellent nitrate removal efficiency of ~ 97% via adsorption cum solar photocatalysis towards the removal of nitrate ions from 50 ppm nitrate solution, whereas the dried nanocomposite beads have got a nitrate removal efficiency of ~ 68% in 1 h from 100 ppm nitrate solution. Continuous flow adsorption cum photocatalytic study was performed further using the oven-dried functional beads in which flow rate and bed height were varied while maintaining the concentration of feed solution as constant. A nitrate removal efficiency of 65% and an adsorption capacity of 4.1 mgg−1 were obtained for the CTA-F3 beads in the continuous flow adsorption cum photocatalysis experiment for up to 5 h when using an inlet concentration of 100 ppm, bed height 12 cm, and flow rate 5.0 ml min−1. A representative fixed-bed column adsorption experiment conducted using CTA-F3 beads for the treatment of a real groundwater sample shows reasonable results for nitrate removal (71.7% efficiency) along with a significant removal rate for the other anions as well. Thus, the novel adsorbent/photocatalyst developed is suitable for the removal of nitrates from water due to the synergistic effect between Fe3O4, chitosan, and titanium dioxide. In this research, we propose an environmentally friendly method for producing hematite nanoparticles (H‐NPs) from natural hematite ore, focusing on their application as efficient contrast agents in x‐ray and computed tomography (CT) imaging for medical purposes. The process involves the reduction of iron oxide within the ore to attain the desired hematite phase, crucial for synthesizing H‐NPs. To ensure sustainability, we adopted a Green Chemistry approach, utilizing a combination of carbon soot and limestone for the purification process, thereby achieving eco‐conscious production. The produced H‐NPs were thoroughly characterized using various analytical techniques, such as x‐ray fluorescence (XRF), x‐ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transmission infrared spectroscopy (FT‐IR), and FESEM‐EDX (field emission scanning electron microscopy‐energy‐dispersive x‐ray spectroscopy). XRD analysis confirmed the crystalline rhombohedral hexagonal lattice structure, while FT‐IR spectra indicated the presence of characteristic Fe–O stretching modes in line with the expected molecular composition. FESEM‐EDX imaging unveiled agglomerated particles, ranging in size from 54.6 to 149.9 nm for iron ore and 22 nm for H‐NPs. These particles were primarily composed of iron (Fe) and oxygen (O). The magnetic properties of the H‐NPs were investigated through vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) studies, highlighting their distinct ferromagnetic behavior. Of particular significance, the H‐NPs demonstrated exceptional performance as contrast agents in both x‐ray and CT imaging. Even at minimal concentrations, they exhibited remarkable x‐ray absorption capabilities. CT scans further validated their exceptional absorptive capacity. These findings emphasize the potential of H‐NPs as valuable assets in medical imaging, serving as sustainable tools for enhanced diagnostic applications. To address issues of global energy sustainability, it is essential to develop highly efficient bifunctional transition metal-based electrocatalysts to accelerate the kinetics of both the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Herein, the heterogeneous molybdenum and vanadium codoped cobalt carbonate nanosheets loaded on nickel foam (VMoCoCOx@NF) are fabricated by facile hydrothermal deposition. Firstly, the mole ratio of V/Mo/Co in the composite is optimized by response surface methodology (RSM). When the optimized composite serves as a bifunctional catalyst, the water-splitting current density achieves 10 mA cm−2 and 100 mA cm−2 at cell voltages of 1.54 V and 1.61 V in a 1.0 M KOH electrolyte with robust stability. Furthermore, characterization is carried out using field emission scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectroscopy (FESEM-EDS), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the fabricated VMoCoCOx@NF catalyst synergistically decreases the Gibbs free energy of hydrogen and oxygen-containing intermediates, thus accelerating OER/HER catalytic kinetics. Benefiting from the concerted advantages of porous NF substrates and clustered VMoCoCOx nanosheets, the fabricated catalyst exhibits superior electrocatalytic performance. The carbon nanotube cold cathode has important applications in the X-ray source, microwave tube, neutralizer, etc. In this study, the characteristics of carbon nanotube (CNT) electron gun in series with metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistor (MOSFET) were studied. CNTs were prepared on a stainless steel substrate by chemical vapor deposition and assembled with a mesh gate to form an electron gun. The anode current of the electron gun can be accurately regulated by precisely controlling the MOSFET gate voltage in the subthreshold region from 1 to 40 µA. The current stability measurements show the cathode current fluctuation was 0.87% under 10 h continuous operation, and the corresponding anode current fluctuation was 2.3%. The result has demonstrated that the MOSFET can be applied for the precise control of the CNT electron gun and greatly improve current stability. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The development and application of an electrochemical sensor is reported for detection of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (P3HB) – a bioplastic derived from agro-industrial residues. To overcome the challenges of molecular imprinting of macromolecules such as P3HB, this study employed methanolysis reaction to break down the P3HB biopolymer chains into methyl 3-hydroxybutyrate (M3HB) monomers. Thereafter, M3HB were employed as the target molecules in the construction of molecularly imprinted sensors. The electrochemical device was then prepared by electropolymerizing a molecularly imprinted poly (indole-3-acetic acid) thin film on a glassy carbon electrode surface modified with reduced graphene oxide (GCE/rGO-MIP) in the presence of M3HB. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), cyclic voltammetry (CV), scanning electron microscopy with field emission gun (SEM-FEG), Raman spectroscopy, attenuated total reflection Fourier-transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) were employed to characterize the electrode surface. Under ideal conditions, the MIP sensor exhibited a wide linear working range of 0.1 – 10 nM and a detection limit of 0.3 pM (n = 3). The sensor showed good repeatability, selectivity, and stability over time. For the sensor application, the bioproduction of P3HB was carried out in a bioreactor containing the Burkholderia glumae MA13 strain and sugarcane byproducts as a supplementary carbon source. The analyses were validated through recovery assays, yielding recovery values between 102 and 104%. Diamond materials at different nanoscales provide them various characteristics such as elastic mechanical properties in needle‐like nanotips, flexibility of 2D films having atomic thicknesses and constant hardness under high pressures, superior field electron emission properties of vertically wall‐like composites, unprecedented hardness and improved toughness of nanotwin diamond (nt‐diamond), while the inherent excellent properties of bulk diamond (e.g., high Young's modulus, robustness, biocompatibility) can be maintained. In this paper, the newly born 1D diamond nanothreads, 2D diamanes, as well as 3D nt‐diamond are briefly reviewed. The innovations, progresses and achievements of different dimensional diamond nanostructures, covering lines, planes and volumes are overviewed. The aim of this study was to develop efficient anode materials for direct methanol fuel cell applications. The Ni foam was modified with Bi 2 O 3 - acetylene black-rGO to increase catalytic activity toward methanol oxidation. The Bi 2 O 3 was synthesized via a straightforward green technique. The characterization was achieved by using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-Ray diffraction analysis. The transmission electron microscope and field emission scanning electron microscope was utilized to evaluate the surface properties of catalysts, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy were employed to determine the chemical composition. Bi 2 O 3 particles with diameters ranging from 15 to 75 nm were crystal structures in the (111), (220), (311), and (342) crystal planes. The performance of methanol electrooxidation in an alkaline medium was investigated using cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and chronoamperometry techniques. The surface coverage of the redox species was 2.04 × 10−5 mol g−1, and the diffusion coefficient ranged between 8.02 × 10−12 and 1.25 × 10−13 cm2 s−1. Multilayer films of diamond‐like carbon (DLC) on monocrystalline diamond substrates have been for the first time obtained by plasma‐chemical deposition. Their chemical composition and structural and morphological properties are studied. The DLC individual layers differ in their sp3 carbon content. The multilayer nature of the resulting coatings is confirmed by periodic density modulation on the small‐angle X‐ray reflectometry curve and modulations in the CsC8, CsC6, CsC4 lines on the crater depth profile of secondary ions of elements (secondary ion mass spectrometry). The dependence of the deposition rate of multilayer DLC films on diamond, their composition and properties on the argon additive to the reaction gas mixture, as well as on methane flow, pressure and growth time, are studied. In order to explore the structures, morphology, and optical features of Fe2O3 nanofilms, the successive ionic layer adsorption and reactions (SILARs) technique was utilized to deposit the nanofilms onto glassy slides at varying concentrations of the precursor. Three precursor concentrations (0.025, 0.05 and 0.075) M were used. Analysis using X-ray diffraction (XRD) presented the crystalline structure of the Fe2O3 thin films. Field emission-scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) was used to evaluate the morphological features of the films. The results demonstrate that the surfaces of the films are nonporous and that there is a good distribution for spherical nanosize particles. The number of cycles is another important parameter that has been tested and its effect on the optical properties of prepared films was evaluated. The optical properties like optical absorption and energy gaps are affected directionally by changing the concentration and cycle numbers during the preparation. The latest objective of our study is to determine the role of precursor concentrations and deposition cycles in preparing thin films that have electronic applications such as sensors and solar cells. The low‐concentration boron doping is performed from 1016 to 1018 cm−3 by ion implantation into heteroepitaxially synthesized large‐area diamond and electrical properties are investigated. Photoluminescence analysis is first carried out to clarify the optical properties of the heteroepitaxial diamond substrate. As a result, defect complexes of nitrogen‐vacancy and silicon‐vacancy are hardly detected in this substrate, suggesting that optically high‐purity diamond can be accomplished by heteroepitaxial growth. Then, the electrical properties of resistivity, mobility, carrier concentration, and conductive type by Hall effect measurements are investigated. For the samples with doping concentrations higher than 1016 cm−3, the electrical activation of implanted B acting as acceptors is confirmed. The compensation ratio for the sample with 3.5 × 1017 cm−3 concentration reaches 76%, indicating the presence of compensating donor‐like centers. With increasing the doping concentration to 3.5 × 1018 cm−3, the compensation ratio is significantly reduced to 35%. The observed mobility of the higher doped sample takes almost the ideal value observed for the sample doped by chemical vapor deposition process. It is suggested that the heteroepitaxial synthesis of large‐area and high‐purity substrates should contribute to the further development of the application to electronic, optical, and sensing devices in the future. The coupling processes among the lithosphere, atmosphere, and ionosphere (LAI) during the earthquake preparation phase are still an open scientific debate. Comprehensive LAI coupling effects around the 2022 Ms6.8 Luding earthquake in China are investigated with a multi-parameter and multi-layer approach, including the b-value, revised accelerated moment release, Earth resistivity, ELF magnetic field emissions, atmospheric electric field, surface temperature, foF2 from ionosonde, GNSS TEC, Ne and magnetic field from CSES and Swarm satellites, and energetic electrons from CSES and NOAA satellites. It is found that the anomalies start from the lithospheric parameters as Earth resistivity and b-values 1–2 years before to reflect the local stress loading in the seismic region, then the ionospheric and atmospheric disturbances occur and accelerate −50 days before and −15 days before, and finally the electrons precipitate a few days before. The simultaneous perturbations in LAI illustrate the thermodynamic coupling channel, such as on 24 August, −12 days before. Meanwhile, the abundant developed ionospheric anomalies without atmospheric disturbances demonstrate the electromagnetic coupling way from the lithosphere to the ionosphere directly. Finally, the results demonstrate a two-way model of LAIC: one way is characterized by a slow chain of processes, of thermodynamic nature, starting from the ground and proceeding to the above atmosphere and ionosphere, showing an exponential trend in the cumulative number of anomalies; the second way is characterized by oscillating electromagnetic coupling between the lithosphere and ionosphere, showing intermittent fluctuations in the corresponding cumulative number of anomalies. In this paper, a beta-phase gallium oxide (β -Ga2O3) vertical FinFET with diamond-gate has been studied by Silvaco-ATLAS simulation. The diamond-gate structure achieves adjustable pin (p-insulator-n) junction owing to the diamond-SiO2-Ga2O3 heterostructure. This design also enhances heat dissipation by virtue of the high thermal conductivity of the diamond. Compared to conventional FinFETs, the diamond-gate FinFET (DG-FinFET) reduces the static operating temperature rise by around 17.30%. Additionally, due to its greater heat dissipation capacity, DG-FinFETs provide a 5.84% increase in current density at 1 kA cm−2 current density level. The structural changes in the diamond-gate also result in a significant reduction in the gate-source capacitance (C GS). At 1 MHz operating frequency and the same gate voltage, DG-FinFETs have 69.29% less gate-source charge (Q GS), 70.80% less charge/discharge delay time, 73.70% less switching loss, and 57.15% less conduction loss. Boron-doped diamond thin films exhibit extensive applications in chemical sensing, in which the performance could be further enhanced by nano-structuring of the surfaces. In order to discover the relationship between diamond nanostructures and properties, this paper is dedicated to deep learning target detection methods. However, great challenges, such as noise, unclear target boundaries, and mutual occlusion between targets, are inevitable during the target detection of nanostructures. To tackle these challenges, DWS-YOLOv8 (DCN + WIoU + SA + YOLOv8n) is introduced to optimize the YOLOv8n model for the detection of diamond nanostructures. A deformable convolutional C2f (DCN_C2f) module is integrated into the backbone network, as is a shuffling attention (SA) mechanism, for adaptively tuning the perceptual field of the network and reducing the effect of noise. Finally, Wise-IoU (WIoU)v3 is utilized as a bounding box regression loss to enhance the model's ability to localize diamond nanostructures. Compared to YOLOv8n, a 9.4% higher detection accuracy is achieved for the present model with reduced computational complexity. Additionally, the enhancement of precision (P), recall (R), mAP@0.5, and mAP@0.5:0.95 is demonstrated, which validates the effectiveness of the present DWS-YOLOv8 method. This study reports enhancing the emission intensity of Dy3+ doped zinc gallate phosphor via Li+ monovalent co-doping. 2–12 mol% Li+ co-doped samples and a 0.05 mol% Dy3+ doped sample were synthesized using a solid-state synthesis technique. X-ray powder diffraction was used to analyze the phase of the synthesized phosphors. By recording the reflectance, the absorption properties were quantified using Ultraviolet-Visible spectroscopy, which displayed absorption peaks corresponding to the Dy3+ activator ions. The Kubelka-Munk function was used to estimate the bandgap and its variation concerning co-dopant concentrations. Energy dispersive electron spectroscopy and field emission scanning electron microscopy have been used to analyze the individual samples' elemental composition and surface morphology. Surface mapping was also conducted using time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was carried out for the 2 and 10 mol% Li+ co-doped samples to understand the structural properties. XPS confirmed the presence of anti-site defects in the synthesized samples. Phosphorescence spectra were recorded to analyze the effect of the Li+ co-doping on the excitation and emission, which showed a substantial increase in intensity. Apart from Dy3+ characteristic emission, all samples exhibited defect emission using a 299 nm excitation wavelength. The luminescence decay time for both types of emission spectra was recorded and found to be in microseconds. The thermoluminescence technique was used to quantify the trap states created between the valance and conduction bands. The analyzed samples were found to have more than one trap with varying trap densities and activation energies. The color chromaticity coordinates were determined for each sample regarding defect emission and the characteristic emission of the Dy3+ activator ions to assess the color of the emission generated. The information obtained shows promising possibilities that this phosphor material may be a good fit for light-emitting diodes and display technologies based on the emission wavelengths produced. We investigated electron emission characteristics of a hafnium carbide [HfC(100)] single-crystal tip at various temperatures toward finding a candidate of the next generation of emitters for electron microscopes. The emission mode changed from cold-field emission (CFE) to low-temperature and high-temperature thermal-field emission and, finally, to extended Schottky emission. The energy width at full width of half maximum of the emitted electrons was 0.2 eV in the CFE mode at an angular current of 20 μA/sr, and it showed good emission stability with current noise less than 3.5% in an electron gun of a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Spatial resolution of the SEM at an acceleration voltage of 0.5 kV improved 14% by using the HfC(100)-CFE tip instead of a conventional W(310)-CFE tip. High monochromaticity and stable electron emission of the HfC(100)-CFE tip are suitable for the next generation of emitters for ultrahigh-resolution field emission SEMs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study aimed to investigate the influence of reactive oxygen species (i.e., neutral O atom and O 2 + ion) on deposition rates and film thickness uniformity in tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) plasma, utilizing a combination of plasma-fluid dynamic and quantum chemical (QC) simulations. The plasma simulations employed an improved model based on a previous study [H. Li et al., Jpn. J. Appl. Phys. 58, SEED06 (2019)], specifically tailored for a TEOS/O2/Ar/He gas mixture. In the QC simulations, both flat and step silicon oxide (SiO2) surfaces were employed to investigate the adsorption behavior of SiO molecules, the predominant silicon-containing species in TEOS plasma. These simulations also enabled the examination of the rates of SiO molecule adsorption on SiO2 surfaces, facilitating a direct comparison with the sticking coefficients utilized in the plasma simulation. The results of QC simulations revealed that SiO molecules exhibited a higher energetic preference for adsorption on step surfaces than on flat surfaces, resulting in the formation of new SiOH surface sites. Meanwhile, the plasma simulations demonstrated a strong correlation between the deposition rate and film thickness uniformity and the generation of oxygen species, specifically O atoms and O 2 + ions, as well as their respective fluxes. This relationship takes precedence over the influence of TEOS or its fragments colliding with the surface. Notably, higher plasma source frequencies were found to enhance the production of atomic O, which contributed significantly to achieving higher deposition rates. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present a simple quantum perturbative full dimensionality model to study field emission from a graphene blade within the frame of the Bardeen transfer Hamiltonian formalism. The material electronic wavefunction is obtained for a multidimensional square well potential specifically designed to reproduce two important characteristics of the material, the Fermi level, and the shape of the emitting orbitals. The wavefunction in the vacuum between the electrodes is obtained with a close coupling method in a finite domain. Our model provides the emitted current density with respect to the applied field. This allows us to discriminate the different functional forms proposed to fit the Fowler–Nordheim emission curves. Our model also provides information on emission patterns. In this work, we have made experimental measurements of multiple-hump total electron emission yield (TEEY) curves on SiO2 thin films. A Monte-Carlo electron transport model, published in Gibaru et al., J. Electron Spectrosc. Relat. Phenom. 261, 147265 (2022), has been developed to analyze the physical reasons of such atypical behavior. It is shown that the multiple-hump TEEY curves of thin dielectric layers are due to internal recombination effects. However, such kind of phenomenon is demonstrated to be strongly correlated to the incident current density. This analysis reveals that the double-hump TEEY curves observed commonly on insulators are also most probably a measurement artifact, tied to the operating parameters of the electron gun. A careful choice of experimental parameters can eliminate this artifact, by using a constant current density that is also low enough to limit recombination effects. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the present research article, the acoustic shock wave-resistant efficiency of silica microparticles (SiO 2 -α-cristobalite)) has been experimentally evaluated in terms of structural, optical and morphological stability against the impact of shock waves. The required SiO 2 particles were synthesized by a hydrothermal method which was subjected to a different number of shock pulses such as 200,400 and 600 with Mach number 2.2. Shocked samples' structural, morphological and optical stabilities have been evaluated by utilizing a powder X-ray diffractometer (PXRD), Ultraviolet–Diffuse reflectance spectrometer (DRS) while the surface morphological analysis has been scrutinized by the field emission scanning electron microscopic technique (FESEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Raman spectroscopy techniques are utilized to evaluate oxidation states and crystallographic structural stability. The above-mentioned analytical techniques provide convincing proofs whereby the synthesized SiO 2 particles are authentically proven to possess outstanding structural, optical and morphological stability against the impact of shock waves. The implicated experimental results and the arguments strongly suggest that the SiO 2 particles are suitable candidates for aerospace and defense industry applications due to their outstanding shock wave-resistant properties. Field electron emission from nanometer-scale objects deviates from the predictions of the classical emission theory as both the electrostatic potential curves within the tunneling region and the image potential deviates from the planar one. This impels the inclusion of additional correction terms in the potential barrier. At the apex of a tip-like rotationally symmetric surface, these terms are proportional to the (single) local emitter curvature. The present paper generalizes this relation, showing that for any emitter geometry, the coefficient of the correction terms is given by the mean curvature, i.e., the average of the two principal curvatures. Field electron emission cathodes were constructed from knitted fabrics comprised entirely of carbon nanotube (CNT) fibers. The fabrics consisted of a top layer array of ∼2 mm high looped structures and a bottom layer that was 1 mm thick with a flat underlying surface. Field emission (FE) experiments were performed on 25.4 mm diameter CNT fabric cathodes in both direct current (DC) and pulsed voltage (PV) modes, and the results were compared to those obtained from a CNT film cathode. The DC measurements were performed at a maximum voltage of 1.5 kV. The CNT fabric cathode emitted 20 mA, which was an 8× increase over the emission current from the CNT film cathode. The DC results were analyzed using the corrected form of the Fowler–Nordheim FE theory initially developed by Murphy and Good, which allows for the determination of the formal emission area and effective gap-field enhancement factor. The PV experiments resulted in Ampere level emission currents from both CNT fabric and CNT film cathodes. For a 25 kV, 500 ns voltage pulse, the CNT fabric cathode emitted 4 A, which was 2× more current than the CNT film cathode. Scanning electron microscopy imaging after PV testing revealed that the fibers remained intact after >5000 pulses. These results indicate that knitted CNT fabrics offer a promising approach for developing large area, conformable, robust FE cathodes for vacuum electronic devices. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Multiferroic composites consisting of a single-phase multiferroic [0.6(PbZr0.53Ti0.47O3)-0.4(PbFe0.5Ta0.5)O3] as a matrix and a magnetostrictive phase (Co0.6Zn0.4Fe1.7Mn0.3O4) dispersed in the matrix are fabricated via hybrid synthesis technique. The structure and surface morphology studies using x-ray diffraction and field emission scanning electron microscopy techniques indicate the formation of 3-0 type particulate composites. Coexistence of soft-magnetic behavior and ferroelectric characteristics are confirmed for composites from magnetization vs magnetic field (M–H) and polarization vs electric field (P–E) measurements, respectively. Magneto-dielectric (MD) measurement shows significant changes in the dielectric properties with the application of a magnetic field, indicating the existence of strong MD behavior. The biquadratic nature of magneto-electric (ME) coupling is described by the Landau free energy equation arising from the strain transfer at the interfaces between the constituent phases. The direct magneto-electric voltage coefficient measurement also confirms very strong coupling between ferroelectricity and magnetism and supports the strain-mediated magneto-electric effect in composites. The Φ = 0.3 composite exhibits the maximum ME coefficient of 20.72 mV/cm Oe with MS = 24.62 emu/g, HC = 59.66 Oe, and piezoelectric coefficient value d33 = 19 pC/N. Using the successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR) method, we successfully deposited thin films (TFs) of both pure cadmium oxide (CdO) and strontium (Sr) CdO onto glass slides. Analysis of the films’ structure and morphology, conducted via field emission scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction, revealed a polycrystalline cubic structure with porous nanoflake agglomerates. Further characterization involved ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy and photoluminescence spectrum measurements to explore the optical attributes of the CdO films. Notably, we observed significant impacts of Sr doping on both optical transmittance and photoluminescence emission intensity in the CdO nanostructures. Electrical measurements, carried out using four-probe Iviumstat analysis, demonstrated variations in resistivity with different levels of Sr doping. The current study, accurately designed and created a two-dimensional (2D) structure of SnO 2 nano-flowers and In 2 O 3 nanoparticles using a simple hydrothermal technique and sol-gel method, respectively. On the outer surface of SnO 2 nanoflowers the In 2 O 3 nanoparticles were uniformly growing, clearly revealed by field emission scanning electron microscopic. Besides, crystal phase structure, surface area and elementals composition were characterized by XRD, BET, TEM, EDS, XPS and the gas sensing properties of In 2 O 3 @SnO 2 NFs. The results exhibited that 2 wt% In 2 O 3 @SnO 2 NFs sensor is highly sensitive to NO 2 , the response (R g /R a) to 30 ppm NO 2 is 94.5, and at 50 ppb the response measured 0.61 at 150 °C, the response time is 32 and 51s, respectively, along with good moisture resistance. Besides along with excellent selectivity, long-term stability, and relative humidity (RH) in high-humidity environment, the 2 wt% In 2 O 3 @SnO 2 NFs still maintain high response 91 at 30 ppm. More importantly, at room temperature the response was (Rg/Ra = 1.01) at detection limit 300 ppb towards NO 2 , which could use be for trace NO 2 gas detection. The large specific surface areas of SnO 2 , the abundance of oxygen species adsorbed on the surface, the distinctive electron transformation between heterojunction materials, and high electron transmission channel of SnO 2 and In 2 O 3 transition layer were all considered to have a synergistic effect thatin2 contributed to excellent sensing properties of In 2 O 3 @SnO 2 NFs. In this study, the effect of joint metallurgy on the mechanical performance and formability of dissimilar microplasma arc welding of austenitic steel (SS 316L) and Inconel 625 (IN 625) is represented. The welded blanks (WB) are stretched from uniaxial to biaxial by tensile test and limiting dome height test (LDH) in order to measure the joint efficiency and formability of the WBs, respectively. The joint metallurgy is characterized by transmission electron microscopy and field emission scanning electron microscopy. The results indicate that the fusion zone (FZ) consists of a homogeneous mixture of Nickel (γNi) and iron-based austenite (γFe) with different types of dendritic structure interconnected with brittle Laves phase network and some secondary phases like MC, M6C, and NbC. The presence of such phases increases the weld hardness and affects the formability of the WB. The obtained maximum elongation of the WB is 30.5%, which is 100.4% of IN 625 and 52.6% of SS 316L. Moreover, the achieved joint strength is 643.7 MPa, which is 67% of IN 625 and 94% of SS 316L. The maximum LDH of the WB, SS 316L and IN 625 is 6.7, 12.3 and 9.7 mm, respectively, in dry condition. During the tensile and LDH tests, the failure of the WB is taken place from the week partially melted zone. The development of stable non-noble and cost-effective metal sulfide-based electrocatalyst materials for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is still a great challenge. Herein, we report the rationally designed electrocatalysts containing Co 3 S 4 /Co 9 S 8 co-doped nitrogen-enriched porous carbon polyhedrons (Co 3 S 4 /Co 9 S 8 /NC PHs). The Co 3 S 4 /Co 9 S 8 /NC PHs were achieved from Zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 PHs by adding sulfur powder and then placing them in an inert atmosphere at 375 °C for 2 h. The prepared electrocatalyst materials were analyzed using X-ray diffraction, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller analysis, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy techniques. The HER catalytic activity of the Co 3 S 4 /Co 9 S 8 /NC PHs exhibited the superior overpotential performance of 134 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm−2 with the Tafel slope of −119 mV dec−1. Additionally, the results from chronopotentiometry maintained a strong kinetic response as well as the long cycling stability of 100 h for the Co 3 S 4 /Co 9 S 8 /NC PHs electrocatalyst at a constant current density of −10 mA cm−2 with 8.4% decay rate. This study demonstrates a new strategy for hydrogen generation synthesizing non-noble catalyst materials with excellent HER activities. Integration of NV−-rich diamond with optical fibers enables guiding quantum information on the spin state of the NV− color center. Diamond-functionalized optical fiber sensors have been demonstrated with impressive sub-nanotesla magnetic field sensitivities over localized magnetic field sources, but their potential for distributed sensing remains unexplored. The volumetric incorporation of diamonds into the optical fiber core allows developing fibers sensitive to the magnetic field over their entire length. Theoretically, this makes distributed optical readout of small magnetic fields possible, but does not answer questions on the addressing of the spatial coordinate, i.e., the location of the field source, nor on the performance of a sensor where the NV− fluorescence is detected at one end, thereby integrating over color centers experiencing different field strength and microwave perturbation. Here, we demonstrate distributed magnetic field measurements using a step-index fiber with the optical core volumetrically functionalized with NV− diamonds. A microwave antenna on a translation stage is scanned along a 13 cm long section of a straight fiber. The NV− fluorescence is collected at the fiber's far end relative to the laser pump input end. Optically detected magnetic resonance spectra were recorded at the fiber output for every step of the antenna travel, revealing the magnetic field evolution along the fiber and indicating the magnetic field source location. The longitudinal distribution of the magnetic field along the fiber is detected with high accuracy. The simplicity of the demonstrated sensor would be useful for, e.g., magnetic-field mapping of photonics- and/or spintronics-based integrated circuits. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Efficient charge injection into the emitters, which can reduce the voltage loss at interfaces, is a prerequisite for high-performance light-emitting diodes, with low voltage operation. Here we develop a sol–gel ZnO (s-ZnO) electron-transport layer for the perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) with green-emission formamidinium lead bromide (FAPbBr3) perovskites as emitters. Polyethylenimine (PEI) is mixed into the s-ZnO precursor as a modifier, which not only promotes the wettability of s-ZnO films, but also passivates the defects of s-ZnO without sacrificing their electrical conductivity. As a result, highly efficient FAPbBr3 films are obtained on the s-ZnO films. The maximum current efficiency of PeLED with s-ZnO:PEI electron-transporting layer reaches 13.5 cd/A, 45% higher than that based on pristine s-ZnO without PEI modifier. Benefiting from the outstanding charge-transport properties of s-ZnO and high-quality perovskite film, the turn-on voltage of the s-ZnO based PeLEDs is only 1.9 V, much lower than the band-gap voltage (~ 2.3 V) of FAPbBr3. In the present study, cellulose@SP@catechin@Fe3O4 nanocomposite underwent synthesis and characterization employing various analytical techniques, including Fourier transform‐infrared spectroscopy (FT‐IR), field‐emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, vibrating sample magnetometry, X‐ray powder diffraction, and X‐ray spectroscopy. This reusable and efficient nanocomposite facilitated the synthesis of azo‐linked 4‐arylidene‐benzodiazepine, resulting in products with high yields. Characterization of these products was conducted utilizing 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), 13C NMR, and FT‐IR spectral data alongside mass analyses. The paper considers the possibility of changing the morphology of inclusions in diamonds based on the study of these inclusions and the inclusion–diamond boundary. Raman spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy methods were used. According to the literature data, it is known that the octahedral form of mineral inclusions in diamond is induced, and does not correspond to the initial conditions of joint growth of diamond and inclusion, but the mechanism of this process is not considered. Solids differ in the value of surface Gibbs energy; the harder the material, the higher its melting point and the greater the value of surface Gibbs energy In the case of the diamond–inclusion pair, the surface energy of diamond far exceeds the surface energy of the inclusion. Diamond crystals have a surface energy value for an octahedron face of 5.3 J/m2, dodecahedron—6.5 J/m2, and cube—9.2 J/m2, i.e. it is anomalously high compared to the surface tension of silicate and other minerals. Therefore, the mineral inclusion in diamond tends to the form corresponding to the minimum of free energy in the "diamond–inclusion" pair, and when the energy of diamond dominates, the final shape will be determined by it, i.e. it will be an octahedron. Perovskite SrVO3 has recently been proposed as a novel electron emission cathode material. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations suggest multiple low work function surfaces, and recent experimental efforts have consistently demonstrated effective work functions of ∼2.7 eV for polycrystalline samples, both results suggesting, but not directly confirming, that some fraction of even lower work function surface is present. In this work, thermionic electron emission microscopy (ThEEM) and high-field ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy (UPS) are used to study the local work function distribution and measure the work function of a partially oriented- (110)-SrVO3 perovskite oxide cathode surface. Our results show direct evidence of low work function patches of about 2.0 eV on the cathode surface, with a corresponding onset of observable thermionic emission at 750 °C. We hypothesize that, in our ThEEM and UPS experiments, the high applied electric field suppresses the patch field effect, enabling the direct measurement of local work functions. This measured work function of 2.0 eV is comparable to the previous DFT-calculated work function values of the SrVO-terminated (110) SrVO3 surface (2.3 eV) and SrO-terminated (100) surface (1.9 eV). The measured 2.0 eV value is also much lower than the work function for the (001) LaB6 single crystal cathode (∼2.7 eV) and comparable to the effective work function of B-type dispenser cathodes (∼2.1 eV). If SrVO3 thermionic emitters can be engineered to access domains of this low 2.0 eV work function, they have the potential to significantly improve thermionic emitter-based technologies. Controlled spin transport in magnetic stacks is required to realize pure spin current-driven logic and memory devices. The control over the generation and detection of the pure spin current is achieved by tuning the spin to charge conversion efficiency of the heavy metal interfacing with ferromagnets. Here, we demonstrate the direct tunability of spin angular momentum transfer and thereby spin pumping, in CoFeB/Pt stack, with interfacial magnetic anisotropy. The ultra-low thickness of the CoFeB thin film by tilting the magnetization from in-plane to out-of plane direction due to interfacial anisotropy from higher thickness of CoFeB thin film. The ferromagnetic resonance measurements are performed to investigate the magnetic anisotropy and spin pumping in CoFeB/Pt stacks. We clearly observe tunable spin pumping effect in the CoFeB/Pt stacks with varying CoFeB thicknesses. The spin current density, with varying ferromagnetic layer thickness, is found to increase from 1.10 MA/m2 to 2.40 MA/m2, with increasing in-plane anisotropy field. Such interfacial anisotropy-controlled generation of pure spin current can potentially lead to next-generation anisotropic spin current-controlled spintronic devices. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Tartaric-sulfuric acid anodic (TSA) films were prepared on the surface of the 2024 Al alloy. These films were sealed with cerium salts at 25 °C and 65 °C, hot water, and dichromate. The morphology and corrosion resistance of the anodic films were investigated using a field emission scanning electron microscope/energy-dispersive spectrometer, an electrochemical workstation, an acidic spot test, and an immersion test. The results indicated that the surface of the TSA film sealed with cerium salt at 65 °C had a slightly lower cerium content compared to the TSA film sealed at 25 °C. It was found that increasing the sealing temperature of cerium salt could enhance the corrosion resistance of the TSA film. After immersion in a 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution for 336 h, no obvious corrosion pits were observed on the surface of the TSA film sealed at 65 °C, whereas many larger corrosion pits appeared on the surface of the TSA film sealed at 25 °C. The improved corrosion resistance of the TSA film sealed at 65 °C could be attributed to the synergistic effect of cerium oxide deposition and the hydration reaction. The corrosion resistance of the TSA film sealed at 65 °C was significantly better than that of the film sealed with hot water, but it was still lower than that of the TSA film sealed with dichromate. The bioaccumulation of lead in soil poses a significant human health risk. The solidification/stabilization (S/S) technique, employing binders like Portland cement or lime, is a common method for remediating lead-contaminated soil. However, cement production has adverse environmental impacts, prompting the exploration of eco-friendly alternatives like alkali-activated materials (AAMs). This study assesses AAM efficacy in the S/S of lead-contaminated soil. The effects of several factors, including varying amounts of volcanic ash (VA), lead concentration, curing temperatures, and curing times are investigated. Unconfined compressive strength (UCS), toxicity characteristic leaching procedure test (TCLP), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and field emission scanning electron microscope-energy-dispersive spectroscopy-mapping analyses (FESEM/EDS/mapping) analyses are used to study the specimens. The findings indicated a substantial increase in the UCS of lead-contaminated soil treated with 15% VA (under oven curing (OC) conditions), and 10% VA (under ambient curing (AC) conditions) exhibited remarkable increases of up to 600% and 458%, respectively. Moreover, the leaching of Pb2+ ions from samples contaminated with 10,000 mg/kg (under OC conditions) and 2500 mg/kg (under AC conditions) experienced significant reductions of 87% (from 135.14 to 13.36 ppm) and 91% (from 26.32 to 2.21 ppm), respectively. The S/S process in these samples operated through three primary mechanisms of chemical bonding, physical encapsulation, and the formation of insoluble silicate. The formation of N-A-S–H and hydroxy sodalite structures played a vital role in facilitating these mechanisms. Diamond films with different grain sizes are deposited on TiO2 nanotube (TNT) arrays prepared by anodic oxidation using a microwave plasma chemical vapor deposition reactor. The scanning electron microscope, X‐Ray diffractometer, and Raman results indicate that the diamond film is successfully deposited and that the substrate undergoes a phase transition due to the diamond deposition temperature, resulting in the rutile phase becoming dominant with lower energy bandgap and work function. Notably, after 5 h of deposition, a relatively continuous microcrystalline film is formed on the TNTs, and the diamond grains change from spherical to pyramidal and show excellent electron field emission behavior, with a low turn‐on field of 0.5 V μm−1 and a current density of 85.9 μA cm−2. In addition, the deposition environment of the nanocrystalline diamond has a large impact on the substrate morphology, resulting in a blocked electron transport path, which reduces the overall field emission performance. The enhanced performance is attributed to the synergistic effect between the highly efficient 1D electron path of the TNTs, the negative electron affinity of the diamond surface, and the lower work function of rutile TiO2.
