Urban areas worldwide now suffer from high congestion due to the high number of daily trips taken by residents for different purposes. Public transport (PT) has the potential to solve both such traffic related problems and related environmental challenges; however, this potential cannot be realised without adequate passenger acceptance. This study thus aimed to evaluate the current level of public transport in Najaf city and to propose the introduction of tram lines based on international standards as an alternative means of transport, thus modelling the effectiveness of this change. The results of showed that Najaf city streets suffer from several high congestion areas, many of which are near current capacity. Public transport in Al-Najaf City also lacks any organisation between options such specialised buses and trains, with timetables and routes both conflicting and confusing. Systems that use trams tend to combine regional rail with the best aspects of streetcars, facilitating direct links between town centers and their surrounding areas. Such a tram-train strategy could thus offer significant benefits in terms of both utilising and extending the current infrastructure to enhance transit. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
