Exposure to quasi-electrostatic field induced currents is a hazard of live-line transmission work. These steady-state induced currents are typically less than 1 mA, and their sensory effects range from imperceptible to painful depending on the person and conditions such as contact area and duration. Permanent injury from these currents is unlikely but they can distract workers, increasing the risk of injury from falls or other dangers. Identifying contact current severity and training workers can help reduce the risk of accidents. Measuring induced currents along a climbing route is time-consuming and simulation is challenging because of the geometric complexity of the worker, the transmission structure, conductor bundles, and electric fields in the climbing space. This research explores the suitability of a recently published adaptation of the charge simulation method for calculating worker-induced currents. The method uses Fourier principles to improve computational efficiency while explicitly modeling all bundle subconductors. The research also examines simplifications for modeling lattice structures and human geometry. Calculated currents compare well to measurements for a worker climbing a 400 kV lattice structure. This indicates the method is a practical option for calculating steady-state contact current severity. A simple calculation is suggested for estimating these currents. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Seven emergency nuclear workers, who had internal exposure due to an intake of radionuclides, mainly I-131, during the emergency response operation in March 2011, after the accident at the Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP), visited the National Institute of Radiological Sciences (NIRS) outpatient clinic for medical evaluation. They were followed up after their first visit for 10 years. The estimated committed equivalent doses to the thyroid were distributed between 3.2 to 1.2 × 10 Sv. This group thought to be received highest exposure at the accident. None of the workers had symptoms related to abnormal thyroid function. The examinations, including thyroid function tests and ultrasound, detected no abnormalities related to radiation exposure. Despite much research focusing on green human resource management, there is still a lack of comprehension regarding when and how different green human resource management practices influence employee green behavior. This research aims to construct and verify a research model in which different green human resource management practices influence employee green behavior through mediated pathways of perceived organizational green support and by interactive impact of employee green value. Structural equation modeling and importance-performance map analysis were performed based on survey data collected from 333 employees working in Chinese electric vehicle companies. The results revealed that most investigated practices are positively related to employee green behavior, and most of these relationships are mediated by perceived organizational green support and moderated by employee green value. However, green reward management negatively influences employee green behavior, and perceived green support does not mediate this relationship. Meanwhile, employee green value weakens green reward management's negative impact on employee green behavior, while it does not moderate relationships between green training and development, nor green performance management and green behavior. Additionally, findings indicate that green training and development exhibits the highest performance while green involvement and engagement has the greatest total effect on employee green behavior. Objective: The objective was to determine the effect of two head-mounted display (HMD) augmented reality (AR) devices on muscle activity and eye strain of electric utility workers. The AR devices were the Microsoft HoloLens and RealWear HMT-1. Background: The HoloLens is an optical see-through device. The HMT-1 has a small display that is mounted to the side of one eye of the user. Method: Twelve power plant operators and 13 manhole workers conducted their normal procedural tasks on-site in three conditions: HoloLens, HMT-1, and "No AR" (regular method). Duration of test trials ranged up to 30 s for operators and up to 10 min for manhole workers. Mean and peak values of surface electromyographic (sEMG) signals from eight neck muscles were measured. A small eye camera measured blink rate of the right eye. Results: In general, there were no differences in sEMG activity between the AR and "No AR" conditions for both groups of workers. For the manhole workers, the HoloLens blink rate was 8 to 11 blinks per min lower than the HMT-1 in two tasks and 6.5 fewer than "No AR" in one task. Subjective assessment of the two AR devices did not vary in general. Conclusion: The decrease in blink rate with the HoloLens may expose utility manhole workers to risk of eye strain or dry-eye syndrome. It is of great significance to accurately provide electric field information for electric power operators and electric power inspection equipment to ensure the safety of live working robots and electric power workers. In this paper, the principle of parallel plate charge induction is used to detect electric field signals and the influence of the inherent capacitance of the parallel plate on the back-end circuit is considered. An equipotential ring is used as the structure of the sensing unit to eliminate the uncertainty generated by the edge electric field. The parameters of the sensor probe are determined by the principle of differential-integration, and its structure is analyzed and designed. The consistency of the designed sensor probe was analyzed, and the results show that the consistency of the sensor is better. We have measured the sensitivity coefficients of the six probes, and the average absolute deviation reached 0.031556. The fits were all above 0.9995. In addition, a three-dimensional power frequency electric field measurement system that is easy to manufacture is designed using the hexahedral structure, which solves the problem of inaccurate electric field measurement caused by the parallel plate probe and the field source being not perpendicular, and the combined field strength formula of nonuniform electric field was obtained. In the laboratory environment, the three-dimensional power frequency electric field measurement system produced in this paper is compared with the electric field simulated by an electric field simulation tool. The test results show that the deviation between the measurement system and simulation is within ±0.55%, the measurement range is 1 kV/m–200 kV/m, the resolution is ≥1 V/m, and the maximum electric field can be measured at 200 kV/m. The nonlinear error is 2.15%, and the sensitivity coefficient is 19.10 mV / kV · m − 1 , which meets the measurement requirements of the power frequency electric field and can be applied to the actual power frequency electric field measurement. This paper introduces the design and implementation process of electric power safety experiment training system based on 3D virtual simulation technology, and expounds the whole process of power safety experiment training system from system requirement and function design to system design and system realization. The system is realized by using ASP. NET technology and unity3D technology effectively. Management, student management, test question management, task management, peformance management, power safety data management and other core functions can be completed by the system. The examination system makes use of unity3D technology which applies 3D scene and WEB design theory. The electric power workers can simulate and manipulate the whole maintenance process through computer so as to improve the employees of electric power construction operation skills. F or decades C anadian trade unionists have expressed frustration with the grievance arbitration system, but this tends to be limited to criticisms of the legalistic nature of the process and the costs and delays involved in getting a judgement. There is little discussion or debate about the denial of the right to strike, which is the central feature of the system. Nor is there much discussion about approaches to contract enforcement that situate legal strategies in broader political strategies to use worker power effectively, including the withdrawal of labour. This study investigates how the United Electrical Workers (ue), a left-led union, defended workers' rights at Canadian General Electric (cge) and Westinghouse in the early years of the new legal regime. pecifically, it charts the North American origins of grievance arbitration systems, sketches the development of personnel policies in the electrical industry, surveys the ue Canadian district's struggle to establish contractual relations and codify workplace rights at these two corporations, reconstructs the elements of ue's approach to contract enforcement, and reviews a number of mid-contract work stoppages at cge and Westinghouse between 1946 and 1966 to determine how the union, workers, employers, and arbitrators negotiated the ban on grievance strikes as they adjusted to new legislation and new collective agreement language. In the smart-grid paradigm, since distribution systems are controlled by various independent operators, it becomes inevitable for all dispatchers to have a wide-area view of the network for situational awareness and protection. This visualisation is accomplished with the aid of protection (p) type micro-phasor measurement unit (μPMU) installed at the bus of the respective distributed generation (DG). One of the pressing issues with DG's is the concern of inadvertent islanding that disrupts orderly reconnection besides posing hazards to utility workers. In view of this, this study proposes a real-time inadvertent islanding detection by μPMU. The voltage and current phasors obtained from these μPMUs by discrete Fourier transform are further processed by Fortescue transform to compute the angle of sequence components. The absolute angle difference between positive and zero components is used to initiate signal for accomplishing intelligent islanding under islanded condition. The simulation results prove the method to be robust, computationally efficient, non-detection zone free and feasible. Most significantly, as measuring equipment and relay are already present in p type μPMU, therefore unlike other detection methods, no extra arrangements are required in this method making it economically viable and easy to implement. Age seems to play an important role in a wide range of employee behaviors. One interpretation of this role is that it depends more on people's beliefs about age than on the ages themselves. Despite the significance of this distinction for human resource planning, it has received little attention in the organizational literature. Background and objectives:Work fatigue is a state of decrease capacity and reduced efficiency for work due to several individual factors as well as working environment factors. Factors related to work fatigue among PT PLN (Persero) employee in South, Southeast and West Sulawesi are determined. Methods and design: Employees (n=65) were selected using purposive sampling. Age, work posture, lightning, work climate and lactic acid were assessed as work fatigue indicators. The data were analyzed by Chi Square for bivariate analysis and path analysis for multivariate analysis. Results:71,4% employees were aged ≥35 years old, 73.3% had a high risk due to poor work posture. Age significantly influence lactic acid before and after work, with t-value respectively 2.310 and 2.252. Age also significantly influence lightning, but only after work with t-value of 2.404 (t statistic >1.96) Conclusion: Significant influence between age and lactic acid before and after work and between lightning and lactic acid after work was found by path analysis. It is recommended to apply work shifts for employees over 35 years old and to have a person in charge of controlling lightning at the work environment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: Evidence of whether exposure to extremely low-frequency magnetic fields (ELF-MF) is related to central nervous system diseases is inconsistent. This study updates a previous study of the incidence of such diseases in a large cohort of Danish utility workers by almost doubling the period of follow-up. Methods: We investigated the risks for dementia, motor neurone disease, Parkinson disease, multiple sclerosis and epilepsy among 32,006 men employed at the 99 utility companies that supplied Denmark with electricity during the period 1900-1993. Cases were identified in the Danish National Patient Registry and the cohort was followed during 1982-2010. Exposure was estimated from a job-exposure matrix based on company records of job title and area of work and cohort members were allocated to one of three categories (<0.1, 0.1-0.99 and ≥1.0 µT). Results: For dementia, multiple sclerosis and epilepsy the incidence rate ratios (IRR) were close to unity, but higher for motor neurone disease [IRR 1.24, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.86-1.79] and lower for Parkinson disease (IRR 0.81, 95% CI 0.67-0.97) among workers exposed to ≥0.1 µT compared with the Danish population. For the highest level of exposure (≥1.0 µT), IRRs of 1.44, 1.78, 1.40 and 1.34 were observed for dementia, motor neurone disease, multiple sclerosis and epilepsy, respectively. Conclusions: We observed elevated risks of dementia, motor neurone disease, multiple sclerosis and epilepsy and lower risks of Parkinson disease in relation to exposure to ELF-MF in a large cohort of utility employees. The motivation and training of a proficient and diverse pool of power engineers, system operators, and policymakers is an important challenge for the electric industry. Power system experts are increasingly in demand globally to facilitate transitions to more environmentally friendly energy systems. More generally, citizens with a basic understanding of load balancing and renewable energy sources are more effective partners in increasingly complex power economies and political decisions. To address the need for an accessible general introduction to power systems, we are developing Griddle, an educational video game that introduces secondary school students to the basics of power system design, scheduling, and operation. We describe the design of Griddle's gameplay and underlying simulation, improvements made in response to user feedback, alignment with emerging teaching standards, and a high school classroom evaluation (n = 178) of Griddle's significant transformative impact, with the goal of validating the game-based learning approach and sharing “lessons learned” with designers of related tools. We find that Griddle is effective at engaging students and presents evidence that it helps students integrate key concepts, and we identify areas where further development and study are needed. To achieve an effective geographic information system, which responds to the different requests of users, a model to manage data on a deep domain conceptual scheme is needed. Based on the study of the state of the art of geographic information systems, especially those used in the electrical sector, it's determined as the objective of this research: to establish an ontology that provides recovery capabilities to the Geographic Information System of the Electricity Union in the management of data to facilitate the decision making in the different processes of the electrical management. With the development of a light ontology, which in its conceptualization only incorporates concepts with their taxonomy and relations (properties of objects), facilitates the processing and analysis of the data, avoiding compatibility problems. The GIS developed has national character and is applicable to the different areas that divide the electric companies. Among the main benefits of the system are: easy to make queries, a viewer of all information contained in the database, access to information in a language closer to natural and facilities for resources management and the process of decision making. Background The electric power industry represents a unique subset of the U.S. workforce. We aimed to evaluate the relationships between occupational category, nature of injury, and injury severity among electric power industry workers. Methods The Occupational Health and Safety Database (1995-2013) was used to calculate injury rates, assess patterns of injury severity, and identify at-risk occupations in this population. Results Over the surveillance period, a total of 63,193 injuries were reported. Overall, and severe injury rates were 3.20 and 0.52 per 100 employee-years, respectively. The fatal injury rate was 3.29 per 100,000 employee-years. Line workers experienced the highest risk for fatal injuries and second highest for non-fatal severe injuries, following meter readers. The most severe non-fatal injuries were hernia and rupture; multiple injuries; and CTD/RSI. Fatal injuries were most commonly associated with vehicle collisions and contact with electric current. Conclusions Industry specific surveillance and interventions tailored to high-risk occupations are needed to further reduce severe injuries in this population. Am. J. Ind. White stork ( Ciconia ciconia L .) population increased dramatically in Portugal over the last decade, leading to an increase in nesting and roosting in the support towers for the electric distribution lines. As a consequence, there are frequent bird fatalities from electrocution and outages in distribution networks are recurrent. Consequently, this causes a poor power quality service and equipment damages, with resulting economic losses for industrial customers and electric distribution companies. To mitigate the risk of stork fatalities and to improve the quality of service, the Portuguese Distribution System Operator (DSO), Energias de Portugal – Distribuição (EDP-D) and Energy Service Regulatory Authority (ERSE) in collaboration with the Institute for Nature Conservation and Forests (ICNF) implemented programs to control white storks activities on power distribution equipment. To control nesting activities several models of electrified structures, based on a micro electroshock discharge system, were developed and applied on the top of the line support towers. The installed structures proved to be successful, since no nesting activities were detected. When landing on the structure, the white stork receives a small shock, which is associated with a negative experience, discouraging further attempts to roost on the support structure. Compared to other technologies tested in the past, taking into account maintenance requirements, equipment costs and power supply requirements, the micro electroshock system proved to be the most reliable and advantageous solution. The current study explored underlying beliefs regarding work safety among a sample of experienced Australian electrical workers. A qualitative research methodology using the theory of planned behavior as a framework was employed. A series of interviews and focus groups with licensed electrical workers ( N = 46) were analyzed using thematic content analysis. Beliefs were classified as advantages (e.g. personal safety of self and co-workers), disadvantages (e.g., inconvenience to customer/clients and workload), referents (e.g., supervisors, work colleagues, customers), barriers (e.g., time and cost), and facilitators (e.g., training and knowledge, equipment availability) of safety adherence. The belief basis of the theory of planned behavior was a useful framework for exploring workers’ safety beliefs. The identified beliefs can inform future research about the important factors influencing safe work decisions and inform strategies to promote safer workplace decision making within the electrical safety context. The upstream oil and gas industry in Canada is significant in size and employs thousands of workers who are exposed daily to workplace hazards, which include arc flash and shock. Occupational health and safety management systems (OHSMSs) are common and mature within the companies that are producers and the service industries that support the producers, but there is a lack of included content related to arc flash and shock, or the development and implementation of stand-alone electrical safety programs that effectively address proactive management of arc flash and shock. The “Safety Association” for Canada's upstream oil and gas industry was solicited by its six member associations to address the implementation of a “Guide” to assist the member associations in reviewing a “systems approach” for effective management of electrical hazards and the development and implementation of an electrical safety program. Consistency in policies, practices, and procedures related to arc flash and shock was a desired state for the upstream oil and gas industry. It was assessed that, by providing guidance on how to build, implement, and maintain a discipline-specific OHSMS, an electrical safety program would provide direction to the upstream oil and gas industry, with the goal of consistency and sustainability. The “Safety Association” initiated a project, and a steering committee with representatives from the six upstream oil and gas member associations was constituted to draft a guideline. Once developed, the industry “Safety Association” would provide the guideline for reference by all companies and individuals.
