We investigate Lorentz invariance breaking in quantum wires due to Rashba spin-orbit interaction and transverse phonons. Using bosonization, we derive an effective action coupling electronic and mechanical degrees of freedom. Stikingly, at a quantum phase transition between straight and bent wire states, we find a gapped phonon mode and a gapless mode with quadratic dispersion, signaling the breaking of Lorentz invariance. We explore stability conditions for general potentials and propose nano-mechanical back-action as a sensitive tool for detecting this transition, with implications for Sliding Luttinger Liquids and dimensional crossover studies., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

VS2 and VSe2 have attracted particular attention among the transition metals dichalcogenides because of their promising physical properties concerning magnetic ordering, charge density wave (CDW), emergent superconductivity, etc., which are very sensitive to stoichiometry and dimensionality reduction. Yanson point contact (PC) spectroscopic study reveals metallic and nonmetallic states in VS2 PCs, as well as a magnetic phase transition was detected below 25 K. Analysis of PC spectra of VS2 testifies the realization of the thermal regime in PCs. At the same time, rare PC spectra, where the magnetic phase transition was not visible, shows a broad maximum of around 20 mV, likely connected with electron-phonon interaction (EPI). On the other hand, PC spectra of VSe2 demonstrate metallic behavior, which allowed us to detect features associated with EPI and CDW transition. The Kondo effect appeared for both compounds, apparently due to interlayer vanadium ions. Besides, the resistive switching was observed in PCs on VSe2 between a low resistive, mainly metallic-type state, and a high resistive nonmetallic-type state by applying bias voltage (about 0.4V). In contrast, reverse switching occurs by applying a voltage of opposite polarity (about 0.4V). The reason may be the alteration of stoichiometry in the PC core due to the displacement of V ions to interlayer under a high electric field. The observed resistive switching characterize VSe2 as a potential material, e.g., for non-volatile resistive RAM, neuromorphic engineering, and for other nanoelectronic applications. Despite decades of intensive experimental and theoretical efforts, the physics of cuprate high-temperature superconductors in general, and, in particular, their normal state, is still under debate. Here, we report our investigation of low-energy charge excitations in the normal state. We find that the peculiarities of the electronic band structure at low energies have a profound impact on the nature of the intraband collective modes. It gives rise to a new kind of mode with huge intensity and non-Lorentzian spectral function in addition to well-known collective excitations like conventional plasmons and spin fluctuation. We predict two such modes with maximal spectral weight in the nodal and antinodal directions. Additionally, we found a long-living quasi-one-dimensional plasmon becoming an intense soft mode over an extended momentum range along the antinodal direction. These modes might explain some of the resonant inelastic X-ray scattering spectroscopy data., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures

TiSe2 has received much attention among the transition metals chalcogenides because of its thrilling physical properties concerning atypical resistivity behavior, emerging of charge density wave (CDW) state, induced superconductivity etc. Here, we report discovery of new feature of TiSe2, namely, observation of resistive switching in voltage biased point contacts (PCs) based on TiSe2 and its derivatives doped by S and Cu (TiSeS, CuxTiSe2). The switching is taking place between a low resistive mainly metallic-type state and a high resistive semiconducting-type state by applying bias voltage (usually below 0.5V), while reverse switching takes place by applying voltage of opposite polarity (usually below 0.5V). The difference in resistance between these two states can reach up to two orders of magnitude at the room temperature. The origin of the effect can be attributed to the variation of stoichiometry in PC core due to drift/displacement of Se/Ti vacancies under high electric field. Additionally, we demonstrated, that heating takes place in PC core, which can facilitate the electric field induced effect. At the same time, we did not found any evidence for CDW spectral features in our PC spectra for TiSe2. The observed resistive switching allows to propose TiSe2 and their derivatives as the promising materials, e.g., for non-volatile resistive random access memory (ReRAM) engineering., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures

Layered semimetallic van der Waals materials TiSe2 has attracted a lot of attention because of interplay of a charge density wave (CDW) state and superconductivity. Its sister compound TiS2, being isovalent to TiSe2 and having the same crystal structure, shows a semiconducting behavior. The natural rises what happens at the transition point in TiSe2-xSx, which is expected for x close to 1. Here we report the growth and characterization of TiSeS single crystals and the study of the electronic structure using density functional theory (DFT) and angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES). We show that TiSeS single crystals have the same morphology as TiSe2. Transport measurements reveal a metallic state, no evidence of CDW was found. DFT calculations suggest that the electronic band structure in TiSeS is similar to that of TiSe2, but the electron and hole pockets in TiSeS are much smaller. We present a comprehensive pedagogical discussion of a family of models describing the propagation of a single particle in a multicomponent non-Markovian Gaussian random field. We report some exact results for single-particle Green's functions, self-energy, vertex part and T-matrix. These results are based on a closed form solution of the Dyson equation combined with the Ward identity. Analytical properties of the solution are discussed. Further we describe the combinatorics of the Feynman diagrams for the Green's function and the skeleton diagrams for the self-energy and vertex, using recurrence relations between the Taylor expansion coefficients of the self-energy. Asymptotically exact equations for the number of skeleton diagrams in the limit of large N are derived. Finally, we consider possible realizations of a multicomponent Gaussian random potential in quantum transport via complex quantum dot experiments., Comment: 42 pages, 14 figures; extended version

Topological transitions in electronic band structures, resulting in van Hove singularities in the density of states, can considerably affect various types of orderings in quantum materials. Regular topological transitions (of neck formation or collapse) lead to a logarithmic divergence of the electronic density of states (DOS) as a function of energy in two-dimensions. In addition to the regular van Hove singularities, there are higher order van Hove singularities (HOVHS) with a power-law divergences in DOS. By employing renormalization group (RG) techniques, we study the fate of a spin-density wave phase formed by nested parts of the Fermi surface, when a HOVHS appears in parallel. We find that the phase formation can be boosted by the presence of the singularity, with the critical temperature increasing by orders of magnitude. We discuss possible applications of our findings to a range of quantum materials such as Sr$_3$Ru$_2$O$_7$, Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ and transition metal dichalcogenides., Comment: Version accepted as Letter in Phys. PtBi2 is a Weyl semimetal, which demonstrates superconductivity with low critical temperature Tc ~ 0.6 K in the bulk. Here, we report our study of electron-phonon interaction (EPI) in trigonal PtBi2 by the Yanson point contact (PC) spectroscopy and presenting the observation of PC enhanced superconductivity. We show, that the Yansons PC spectra display a broad maximum around 15 meV, indicating, apparently, EPI mechanism of Cooper pairing in PtBi2. Moreover, we discovered a substantial increase of Tc up to ~ 3.5 K in PCs. The observed Tc is sufficiently higher than the bulk value, as well as detected at hydrostatic pressure. We calculated the phonon density of states and Eliashberg EPI function in PtBi2 within the framework of the density functional theory. A comparison of experimental data with theoretical calculations showed acceptable agreement. We report a systematic study of low energy metastable states in van der Waals semimetals TiS2, TiSe2 and TiTe2 within the DFT theory by means the evolutionary search algorithm. We find a big difference between TiSe2, TiS2 and TiTe2 in low energy metastable states. While several metastable states exist in TiSe2 and TiS2, no low energy metastable states were found in TiTe2. We show that some of the obtained metastable states can be identified as charge density wave (CDW). We argue that existence of the low energy metastable phases indicates that emergence CDW as a ground state in these compounds., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures

The Spin Physics Detector, a universal facility for studying the nucleon spin structure and other spin-related phenomena with polarized proton and deuteron beams, is proposed to be placed in one of the two interaction points of the NICA collider that is under construction at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (Dubna, Russia). At the heart of the project there is huge experience with polarized beams at JINR. The main objective of the proposed experiment is the comprehensive study of the unpolarized and polarized gluon content of the nucleon. Spin measurements at the Spin Physics Detector at the NICA collider have bright perspectives to make a unique contribution and challenge our understanding of the spin structure of the nucleon. In this document the Conceptual Design of the Spin Physics Detector is presented.

The covariant parton model is generalized to describe quark correlators in a systematic way. Previous results are reproduced for the T-even leading-twist transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions (TMDs), and for the first time all T-even twist-3 TMDs are evaluated in this model. We apply the approach to evaluate the fully unintegrated quark correlator which allows us to understand the model-specific relations between different TMDs. We report resistive switching in voltage biased point contacts (PCs) based on series of van der Waals transition metals tellurides (TMTs) such as MeTe2 (Me=Mo, W) and TaMeTe4 (Me= Ru, Rh, Ir). The switching occurs between a low resistive "metallic-type" state, which is the ground state, and a high resistive "semiconducting-type" state by applying certain bias voltage (<1V), while reverse switching takes place by applying voltage of opposite polarity. The origin of the effect can be formation of domain in PC core by applying a bias voltage, when a strong electric field (about 10kV/cm) modifies the crystal structure and controls its polarization. In addition to the discovery of the switching effect in PCs, we also suggest a simple method of material testing before functionalizing them, which offers a great advantage in finding suitable novel substances. A remarkable several times increase (up to 10 K) of the superconducting critical temperature Tc has been observed in point contacts created on the base of single crystals AFe$_2$As$_2$ (A = K, Cs, Rb). Possible reasons for such a Tc increase in point contacts are briefly discussed on a qualitative level. Among them, it is most likely attributed to interfacial carrier doping and/or uniaxial non-homogeneous pressure arising when the contact is created., Comment: 9 pages, 2 figs. 1 table. The Large Hadron electron Collider (LHeC) is designed to move the field of deep inelastic scattering (DIS) to the energy and intensity frontier of particle physics. Exploiting energy recovery technology, it collides a novel, intense electron beam with a proton or ion beam from the High Luminosity--Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC). The accelerator and interaction region are designed for concurrent electron-proton and proton-proton operation. This report represents an update of the Conceptual Design Report (CDR) of the LHeC, published in 2012. It comprises new results on parton structure of the proton and heavier nuclei, QCD dynamics, electroweak and top-quark physics. It is shown how the LHeC will open a new chapter of nuclear particle physics in extending the accessible kinematic range in lepton-nucleus scattering by several orders of magnitude. Due to enhanced luminosity, large energy and the cleanliness of the hadronic final states, the LHeC has a strong Higgs physics programme and its own discovery potential for new physics. Building on the 2012 CDR, the report represents a detailed updated design of the energy recovery electron linac (ERL) including new lattice, magnet, superconducting radio frequency technology and further components. Challenges of energy recovery are described and the lower energy, high current, 3-turn ERL facility, PERLE at Orsay, is presented which uses the LHeC characteristics serving as a development facility for the design and operation of the LHeC. An updated detector design is presented corresponding to the acceptance, resolution and calibration goals which arise from the Higgs and parton density function physics programmes. The paper also presents novel results on the Future Circular Collider in electron-hadron mode, FCC-eh, which utilises the same ERL technology to further extend the reach of DIS to even higher centre-of-mass energies., Comment: 373 pages, many figures, to be published by J. We report an optimized chemical vapor transport method, which allows growing FeP single crystals up to 500 mg in mass and 80 $mm^{3}$ in volume. The high quality of the crystals obtained by this method was confirmed by means of EDX, high-resolution TEM, low-temperature single crystal XRD and neutron diffraction experiments. We investigated the transport and magnetic properties of the single crystals and calculated the electronic band structure of FeP. We show both theoretically and experimentally, that the ground state of FeP is metallic. The examination of the magnetic data reveals antiferromagnetic order below T$_{N}$ =119 K while transport remains metallic in both the paramagnetic and the antiferromagnetic phase. The analysis of the neutron diffraction data shows an incommensurate magnetic structure with the propagation vector Q=(0, 0, $\pm{\delta}$), where ${\delta}$ $\sim$ 0.2. For the full understanding of the magnetic state, further experiments are needed. The successful growth of large high-quality single crystals opens the opportunity for further investigations of itinerant magnets with incommensurate spin structures using a wide range of experimental tools.

PtBi$_2$ is a polymorphic system with interesting electronic properties. Here we report optimized crystal growth and structural characterization of pyrite-type and trigonal modification of PtBi$_2$. Selected area electron diffraction, X-ray powder diffraction and further Rietveld refinement confirms that trigonal PtBi$_2$ crystallizes in non-centrosymmetric $P31m$ space group, pyrite-type PtBi$_2$ in $Pa\bar{3}$ space group. Series of Pt$_{1-x}$Rh$_x$Bi$_2$ samples was obtained for $x=0, 0.03, 0.35$ in the trigonal PtBi$_2$ structure. These Pt$_{1-x}$Rh$_x$Bi$_2$ compounds become superconducting where critical temperature increases from $T_c=600$ mK for $x=0$ up to $T_c=2.7$ K for $x=0.35$. Furthermore we calculate the electronic band structure, using the structure parameters obtained. The calculated density of states (DOS) shows a minimum for the stochiometric compound at the Fermi level. These findings warrant further research by broader array of experimental techniques, as well as the effect of the substitution on the non-trivial band structure.

The interplay of orbital and spin degrees of freedom is the fundamental characteristic in numerous condensed matter phenomena, including high temperature superconductivity, quantum spin liquids, and topological semimetals. In iron-based superconductors (FeSCs), this causes superconductivity to emerge in the vicinity of two other instabilities: nematic and magnetic. Unveiling the mutual relationship among nematic order, spin fluctuations, and superconductivity has been a major challenge for research in FeSCs, but it is still controversial. Here, by carrying out 77Se nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements on FeSe single crystals, doped by cobalt and sulfur that serve as control parameters, we demonstrate that the superconducting transition temperature Tc increases in proportion to the strength of spin fluctuations, while it is independent of the nematic transition temperature Tnem. Our observation therefore directly implies that superconductivity in FeSe is essentially driven by spin fluctuations in the intermediate coupling regime, while nematic fluctuations have a marginal impact on Tc., Comment: 20 pages, 3 figures; includes supplementary materials (1 note and 3 figures)

We consider the azimuthal $\cos \varphi$ and $\cos 2\varphi$ distributions and the Callan-Gross ratio $R={\rm d}\sigma_L/{\rm d}\sigma_T$ in heavy-quark pair electroproduction, $lN\rightarrow l^{\prime}Q\bar{Q}X$, as probes of linearly polarized gluons in unpolarized nucleons. Our analysis shows that the azimuthal asymmetries and Callan-Gross ratio are predicted to be large and very sensitive to the contribution of the gluonic counterpart of the Boer-Mulders function, $h_{1}^{\perp g}$, describing the linear polarization of gluons inside unpolarized nucleon. In particular, the maximum values of the azimuthal distributions vary from 0 to 1 depending on $h_{1}^{\perp g}$. We derive an S=1 spin polaron model which describes the motion of a single hole introduced into the S=1 spin antiferromagnetic ground state of Ca2RuO4. We solve the model using the self-consistent Born approximation and show that its hole spectral function qualitatively agrees with the experimentally observed high-binding energy part of the Ca2RuO4 photoemission spectrum. We explain the observed peculiarities of the photoemission spectrum by linking them to two anisotropies present in the employed model---the spin anisotropy and the hopping anisotropy. We verify that these anisotropies, and not the possible differences between the ruthenate (S=1) and the cuprate (S=1/2) spin polaron models, are responsible for the strong qualitative differences between the photoemission spectrum of Ca2RuO4 and of the undoped cuprates., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures

We report on the synthesis and physical properties of FeSe$_{1-x}$Te$_x$ single crystals with a low Te content (x = 0.17, 0.21, 0.25), where the replacement of Se with Te partially suppresses superconductivity. Resistivity and Hall effect measurements indicate weak anomalies at elevated temperatures ascribed to nematic transitions. A quasi-classical analysis of transport data, including in a pulsed magnetic field of up to 25 T, confirms the inversion of majority carriers type from holes in FeSe to electrons in FeSe$_{1-x}$Te$_x$ at x $>$ 0.17. The temperature-dependent term in the elastoresistance of the studied compositions has a negative sign, which means that for substituted FeSe compositions, the elastoresistance is positive for hole-doped materials and negative for electron-doped materials just like in semiconductors such as silicon and germanium.

We explore the complete cross-section for the production of unpolarized hadrons in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering up to power-suppressed $\mathcal{O}(1/Q^2)$ terms in the Wandzura-Wilczek-type (WW-type) approximation, which consists in systematically assuming that $\bar{q}gq$-correlators are much smaller than $\bar{q}q$-correlators. Under the applicability of WW-type approximations, certain relations among transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions (TMDs) and fragmentation functions (FFs) occur which are used to approximate SIDIS cross-section in terms of a smaller subset of TMDs and FFs. Two-dimensional second-order topological superconductors (SOTSCs) have gapped bulk and edge states, with zero-energy Majorana bound states localized at corners. Motivated by recent advances in Majorana nanowire experiments, we propose to realize a tunable SOTSC as a two-dimensional nanowire array. We show that the coupling between the Majorana modes of adjacent wires can be controlled by phase-biasing the device, allowing to access a variety of topological phases. We characterize the system using scattering theory, which provides access to its transport properties and its topological invariants. The setup is robust against disorder, both in the nanowires themselves and in the Josephson junctions formed between adjacent wires. Further, we identify a parameter regime in which an initially trivial system is rendered topological upon adding disorder, providing an example of a second-order topological Anderson phase., Comment: 8 + 7 pages, 7 + 2 figures; the published version

The interplay between the nematic order and magnetism in FeSe is not yet well understood. There is a controversy concerning the relationship between orbital and spin degrees of freedom in FeSe and their relevance for superconductivity. Here we investigate the effect of S substitution on the nematic transition temperature ($T_{\rm n}$) and the low-energy spin fluctuations (SF) in FeSe single crystals. We show that the low-energy SF emerge below the nematic transition. The difference between the onset temperature for the critical SF ($T_{\rm SF}$) and $T_{\rm n}$ is small for FeSe but significantly increases with S substitution. Below $T_{\rm SF}$ the Korringa relation is violated and the effective muon hyperfine coupling constant changes a sign. Our results exclude a direct coupling of the low-energy SF to the electronic nematic order indicating a presence of multiple spin degrees of freedom in FeSe$_{\rm 1-x}$S$_{\rm x}$., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures

We carried out point contact (PC) investigation of WTe2 single crystals. We measured Yanson d2V/dI2 PC spectra of the electron-phonon interaction (EPI) in WTe2. The spectra demonstrate a main phonon peak around 8 meV and a shallow second maximum near 16 meV. Their position is in line with the calculation of the EPI spectra of WTe2 in the literature, albeit phonons with higher energy are not resolved in our PC spectra. An additional contribution to the spectra is present above the phonon energy, what may be connected with the peculiar electronic band structure and need to be clarified. We detected tiny superconducting features in d2V/dI2 close to zero bias, which broadens by increasing temperature and blurs above 6K. Thus, (surface) superconductivity may exist in WTe2 with a topologically nontrivial state. We found a broad maximum in dV/dI at large voltages (>200 mV) indicating change of conductivity from metallic to semiconducting type. The latter might be induced by the high current density (~10^8 A/cm^2) in the PC and/or local heating, thus enabling the manipulation of the quantum electronic states at the interface in the PC core., Comment: 4 figs., 11 pages with supplement, will be presented at APS March Meeting, March 4-8, Boston

We develop a theory of the phonon mediated Casimir interaction between two point-like impurities, which is based on the single impurity scattering T-matrix approach. Within this, we show that the Casimir interaction at $T = 0$ falls off as a power law with the distance between the impurities. We find that the power in the weak and in the unitary phonon-impurity scattering limits differs, and we relate the power law to the low-energy properties of the single impurity scattering T-matrix. In addition, we consider the Casimir interaction at finite temperature and show that at finite temperatures the Casimir interaction becomes exponential at large distances., Comment: 8 pages, 10 figures

In recent papers [1,2], two new ways have been proposed to probe the linear polarization of gluons in unpolarized proton: using the azimuthal asymmetries and Callan-Gross ratio in heavy-quark pair leptoproduction, $lN\rightarrow l^{\prime}Q\bar{Q}X$. In this talk, we discuss in details the sensitivity of the QCD predictions for the azimuthal $\cos \varphi$ and $\cos 2\varphi$ asymmetries to the contribution of linearly polarized gluons inside unpolarized proton, where the azimuth $\varphi$ is the angle between the lepton scattering plane $(l,l^{\prime})$ and the heavy quark production plane $(N,Q)$. Our analysis shows that the azimuthal distributions under consideration vary from 0 to 1 depending on the transverse-momentum dependent gluonic counterpart of the Boer-Mulders function, $h_{1}^{\perp g}$. We conclude that the $\cos \varphi$ and $\cos 2\varphi$ asymmetries in heavy-quark pair production in DIS processes are predicted to be large in wide kinematic ranges and sensitive to the contribution of linearly polarized gluons., Comment: 6 pages. A wide variety of complex phases in quantum materials are driven by electron-electron interactions, which are enhanced through density of states peaks. A well known example occurs at van Hove singularities where the Fermi surface undergoes a topological transition. Here we show that higher order singularities, where multiple disconnected leaves of Fermi surface touch all at once, naturally occur at points of high symmetry in the Brillouin zone. Such multicritical singularities can lead to stronger divergences in the density of states than canonical van Hove singularities, and critically boost the formation of complex quantum phases via interactions. As a concrete example of the power of these Fermi surface topological transitions, we demonstrate how they can be used in the analysis of experimental data on Sr$_3$Ru$_2$O$_7$. We investigate magnetic excitations in iridium insulators with pentavalent Ir$^{5+}$ ($5d^4$) ions with strong spin-orbit coupling. We obtain a microscopic model based on the local Ir$^{5+}$ multiplets involving $J=0$ (singlet), $J=1$ (triplet), and $J=2$ (quintet) spin-orbital states. We get effective interactions between these multiplets on square and face-centered-cubic (fcc) structures of magnetic ions in the layered-perovskites and the double-perovkites, in particular Ba$_2$YIrO$_6$. Further, we derive an effective spin-orbital Hamiltonian in terms of bond bosons and explore possible instabilities towards magnetic and quadrupole orderings. Additionally, we study charge excitations with help of the variational cluster perturbation theory and calculate the electronic charge gap as a function of hopping and Coulomb interactions. Based on both electronic and magnetic phase diagrams, we verify the possibility of excitonic magnetism due to condensation of spin-orbital excitons in Ir$^{5+}$ iridates., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures
