Eddy current shielding by a Faraday cage is an effective way to shield alternating-current magnetic fields in scientific instrumentation. In a strong static magnetic field, however, the eddy current in the conductive shield is subject to the Lorentz force, which causes the shield to vibrate. In addition to mechanical issues (e.g., acoustic noise), such vibration induces motional eddy current in the shield that can dominate the original, electromagnetic eddy current to undermine the conductor's shielding capability. In this work, we investigate a method to control motional eddy current by making cut-out patterns in the conductor that follow the electromagnetic eddy current image. This effectively limits the surface current of the plate to a single mode and prevents the proliferation of uncontrolled motion-induced surface currents that disrupts eddy current shielding. After developing a comprehensive theory of magneto-mechanical interaction in a conductive plate, the proposed method was tested on a flat-geometry testbed experiment inside a 3 T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) magnet. It was found that the magnetic field generated by the motional eddy current was much more localized in space and frequency for a patterned-copper shield compared to a solid copper. The magnetic field of the patterned shield could be accurately predicted from the impedance measurement in the magnet. [Display omitted] The Sudokwon landfill (SL) in the Seoul metropolitan area, South Korea, is among the world's largest landfills, striving to curtail landfill gas (LFG) emissions and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. Since 2005, the SL Management Corporation (SLC) has measured LFG emissions (i.e., methane (CH 4) and carbon dioxide (CO 2)) using a dynamic flux chamber proposed by the US EPA. However, uncertainty prevails in validating the reduction of LFG emissions due to the limited spatiotemporal data coverage. In 2020, an eddy covariance (EC) system was installed to enhance measurements, revealing highly fluctuating LFG emissions driven by waste layer LFG production, LFG collection, and atmospheric pressure changes. During the study period, the annual CH 4 emission increased slightly from 465.0 ± 4.2 to 485.5 ± 6.4 g C m−2, while that of CO 2 decreased by 2/3 (from 408.7 ± 16.5 to 270.6 ± 18.8 g C m−2), primarily due to the doubled CO 2 uptake by the vegetated topsoil. Our first long-term (March 2020 to February 2022) quasi-continuous monitoring using EC (with a gap-filling and partitioning technique based on Random Forest) emphasizes the difficulty of temporal upscaling of discontinuously observed surface emissions to quantify the LFG inventory and the need for continuous observations or suitable proxies (e.g., atmospheric CH 4 concentration). Viruses are abundant in the ocean and influence both the composition of marine communities and biogeochemical cycles. Despite their high abundance, production rates of distinct virus taxa in the environment are largely unknown. Here, we investigated production dynamics of T4-like cyanophages and compared them to those of the total dsDNA virioplankton community in two adjacent eddies of opposite polarity in the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre. Virioplankton production rateswere 3-fold higher in the cyclonic than in the anticyclonic eddy, potentially due to higher metabolic activity of their bacterial hosts in the cyclone, and had similar virus production rates during the day and night in the cyclone. In contrast, T4-like cyanophages had similar production rates in the two eddies but showed approximately 4-fold higher production rates at night than during the day, potentially due to a combination of greater infection, increased burst size and more cyanophages completing their infection cycle at night. These findings suggest that virioplankton community production is affected more by spatially differentiated environmental conditions while T4-like cyanophage production is more affected over the diel cycle. Differences in production for the T4-like cyanophages relative to the virioplankton community indicate that spatial variability at the mesoscale differentially impact distinct components of the virioplankton. In this paper, the unsteady aerodynamic characteristics of a three-car grouped high-speed train (HST) with different bogie fairing configurations under the crosswind are studied using improved delayed detached eddy simulation (IDDES) at Re = 1.85 × 106. The numerical method results are validated against the previous wind tunnel experiments. There are three cases with original half-fairing configuration (HFC), non-fairing configuration (NFC) and full-fairing configuration (FFC), respectively. The numerical results show that the bogie fairing configuration has significant effects. Compared to the HFC case, the drag force coefficients of the head, middle and tail cars with NFC increase by 53.13%, 14.87% and 27.04%, and corresponding parts of the FFC case decrease by 49.98%, 24.40% and 12.41%, respectively. The FFC case can also optimize the pressure distribution on the windward and leeward sides of the HST, and the flow structure and vertex distribution around the car body are also optimized. In addition, the increasing encirclement of the fairing configurations reduces the maximum lateral flow velocity inside the bogie cavities by 70% for HFC and 50% for FFC compared to the NFC. Employing the nonlinear local Lyapunov exponent (NLLE) technique, this study assesses the quantitative predictability limit of oceanic mesoscale eddy (OME) tracks utilizing three eddy datasets for both annual and seasonal means. Our findings reveal a discernible predictability limit of approximately 39 days for cyclonic eddies (CEs) and 44 days for anticyclonic eddies (AEs) within the South China Sea (SCS). The predictability limit is related to the OME properties and seasons. The long-lived, large-amplitude, and large-radius OMEs tend to have a higher predictability limit. The predictability limit of AE (CE) tracks is highest in autumn (winter) with 52 (53) days and lowest in spring (summer) with 40 (30) days. The spatial distribution of the predictability limit of OME tracks also has seasonal variations, further finding that the area of higher predictability limits often overlaps with periodic OMEs. Additionally, the predictability limit of periodic OME tracks is about 49 days for both CEs and AEs, which is 5–10 days higher than the mean values. Usually, in the SCS, OMEs characterized by high predictability limit values exhibit more extended and smoother trajectories and often move along the northern slope of the SCS. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study assesses the capability of a coarse-resolution ocean model to replicate the response of the Southern Ocean Meridional Overturning Circulation (MOC) to intensified westerlies, focusing on the role of the eddy transfer coefficient (κ). κ is a parameter commonly used to represent the velocities induced by unresolved eddies. Our findings reveal that a stratification-dependent κ, incorporating spatiotemporal variability, leads to the most robust eddy-induced MOC response, capturing 82% of the reference eddy-resolving simulation. Decomposing the eddy-induced velocity into its vertical variation (VV) and spatial structure (SS) components unveils that the enhanced eddy compensation response primarily stems from an augmented SS term, while the introduced VV term weakens the response. Furthermore, the temporal variability of the stratification-dependent κ emerges as a key factor in enhancing the eddy compensation response to intensified westerlies. The experiment with stratification-dependent κ exhibits a more potent eddy compensation response compared to the constant κ, attributed to the structure of κ and the vertical variation of the density slope. These results underscore the critical role of accurately representing κ in capturing the response of the Southern Ocean MOC and emphasize the significance of the isopycnal slope in modulating the eddy compensation mechanism. Eddy-induced heat flux (EHF) convergence plays an important role in balancing the cooling of mean flows in the heat budget of the Southern Ocean. This study investigates the EHF in the Southern Ocean and the surface ocean heat budget over the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) estimated through a high-resolution ocean assimilation product. In contrast to previous studies in which the estimation of the EHF in the Southern Ocean was based on the assumption that mesoscale eddies are quasigeostrophic turbulence, we find that more than one-third of the total meridional EHF in the surface layer is attributed to ageostrophic currents of eddies and that the ageostrophic component of the EHF convergence is as important as its geostrophic component for the surface ocean heat budget over the ACC. In particular, the ageostrophic meridional EHF convergence accounts for 22% of the warming needed to balance the cooling from the mean flows during winter, equivalent to warming the surface ocean of the ACC by 0.14°C. The ageostrophic meridional EHF is likely caused by the stirring effect of ageostrophic secondary circulations in mesoscale eddies, which are induced by the turbulent thermal wind balance to restore the vertical shear of the upper layer in mesoscale eddies destructed by intense winter winds. In this paper, an innovative hamburger-shaped eddy current damper (HSECD) is presented to mitigate the responses of civil structures subjected to wind excitations. The damper's capacity to dissipate energy is significantly enhanced through a two-phase configuration of permanent magnets (PMs) and two transmission devices: a ball-screw assembly and a bevel gear group. The improved eddy current damper (ECD) solves the problem that the low damping density of traditional ECDs hinders their application to the field of vibration control for civil structures. First, the construction details of this novel HSECD are elaborated, and its principle is discussed through theoretical analysis and numerical simulation. Subsequently, a prototype of the HSECD was fabricated, and cyclic tensile–compressive tests were conducted to investigate its mechanical performance. Furthermore, the temperature effect on the damper's maximum output force was analyzed, and more than 10% performance degradation was detected in tests with a continuous loading of 1,250 s, while the damper performance quickly reached a steady state after a certain decline. A theoretical model of the HSECD was then established to simulate its hysteretic characteristics, and the accuracy was verified by comparing it with the test data, where their energy error was only 1.9%. Finally, the application of the HSECD to both a single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) simplified system and a jacking engineering system demonstrates its excellent control performance because the reduction ratios of their peak displacement were as high as 31.1% and 40.9%, respectively. Scouring around a bridge abutment could potentially result in the failure of the bridge structure, leading to property damage and casualties. Therefore, it is crucial to control and reduce the depth of local scour around the abutment for the safe design of bridge abutments and foundations. Four different shapes of abutments were employed during the experimentation, namely vertical wall, 45° wing wall, oblong, and vertical wall with semi-circular nose shaped abutment. Temporal evaluation predicts the efficacies of these abutment shapes on local scour by varying the discharge (Q), which ranged from 0.023 m3/sec to 0.042 m3/sec with increments of 0.005 m3/sec. Vertical wall and 45° wing wall abutments, which have sharp edges and corners, create eddies and vortices that intensify the more scouring action. On the other hand, abutments with rounded noses and wings tend to generate less turbulence in the water flow, thereby reducing the erosive forces that cause scouring. During the experimentation, it was observed that vertical wall with semi-circular nose shaped bridge abutment reduces scour depth by approximately 27.74% in comparison to vertical wall abutment. Numerical fluid simulations using the Reynolds stress model and water model experiments are conducted to test different designs of tundish turbulence inhibitors (A, B, C, D, and E) for their effectiveness in removing nonmetallic inclusions from steel. The results reveal a unique flow pattern, with a mushroom‐like shape forming around the entry jet. The acceleration of small eddies within this mushroom is a significant factor in inclusion removal. This discovery has practical implications for the steel industry, leading to a longer residence time in the entry jet mushroom and improved inclusion flotation performance. Additionally, the turbulent kinematic viscosity and Reynolds stress fields in the flow mushroom influence the tracer's local dispersion rate and the interactions of the inclusions in this region. This study derives the climatology of surface currents in the Arabian Gulf using the current velocities obtained from the Copernicus Marine Service (CMEMS) for the period 1993–2019. It reveals distinct temporal and spatial variability in the surface current speeds induced by the variability in surface winds, bathymetry and the changes in the lateral gradients in density. The mean speed of the Iranian Coastal Current (ICC) during summer reaches up to 0.33 m·s−1 along the coast of Iran, while the mean speed of Arabian Coastal Current (ACC) reaches up to 0.26 m·s−1 along the coast of Saudi Arabia. We found the occurrence of 2 major and 1 minor cyclonic eddies in the annual, seasonal and monthly climatology, while these eddies are more prevalent during summer. The major cyclonic eddy in the central Gulf develops in May and persists till November with varying patterns, and decays in December. The climatological mean current speeds are higher during summer compared to winter, due to the seasonal changes in thickness of the surface layer by the stratification/destratification processes. The highest mean current speeds along the coast of Qatar are found in June and the lowest in winter months. The highest annual, monthly and seasonal mean current speeds are observed along the north and northeast coast of Qatar, while the lowest are observed along the west coast and southeast coast of Qatar. Interannual variability in surface current speeds is evident, with notable links with the El Niño–Southern Oscillations (ENSO) and Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD). The annual mean current speeds show positive trends, of the order of 0.06–0.14 cm·s−1·year−1 in the offshore regions and 0.05–0.24 cm·s−1·year−1 in the nearshore regions, wherein the highest positive trend is observed off Ras Laffan and the lowest off Dukhan. In the field of quality control, the critical challenge of analyzing microdefects in steel filament holds significant importance. This is particularly vital, as steel filaments serve as reinforced fibers in the use and applications within various component manufacturing industries. This paper addresses the crucial requirement of identifying and investigating microdefects in steel filaments. Eddy current signals are used for the identification of microdefects, and an in-depth investigation is conducted. The core objective is to establish the relationship between the depth of defects and the signals detected through the eddy current sensing principle. The threshold of the eddy current instrument was set at 10%, corresponding to a created depth of 20 µm, to identify defective specimens. A total of 30 defective samples were analyzed, and the phase angles between the experimental and theoretical results were compared. The depths of defects ranged from 20 to 60 µm, with one sample having a depth exceeding 75 µm. The calculated threshold of 10.18% closely aligns with the set threshold of 10%, with a difference of only 1.77%. The resulting root mean square error (RMSE) was found to be 10.53 degrees, equivalent to 3.49 µm for the difference in depth and phase between measured results and estimated results. Computing Lagrangian trajectories with ocean circulation models is a powerful way to infer larval dispersal pathways and connectivity. Defining release areas and timing of particles to represent larval habitat realistically is critical to obtaining representative dispersal pathways. However, it is challenging due to spatial and temporal variability in larval density. Forward-tracking particle experiments were conducted to study larval connectivity of four species (neritic or mesopelagic) in the Gulf of Mexico's (GoM) deep-water region. A seasonal climatology coupled with predicted potential larval habitat models based on generalized additive models was used to delimit the particle dispersal origin. Two contrasting mesoscale circulation patterns were examined: (1) high Loop Current (LC) intrusion, absence of recently detached LC anticyclonic eddies (LC-ACE), and no interaction between LC-ACEs and the semi-permanent cyclonic eddy (CE) in the Bay of Campeche (BoC), and (2) limited LC intrusion, a recently detached LC-ACE, and interaction between LC-ACEs and the BoC's CE. To simulate larval transport, virtual larvae were randomly released in the potential habitats and advected for 30 days with the velocity fields of the HYbrid Coordinate Ocean Model with hourly-resolution assimilation. Potential habitat location and size played a major role in dispersal and connectivity. A greater percentage of particles were retained in potential habitats restricted to the southern BoC, suggesting lower connectivity with other GoM regions than those encompassing most of the BoC or the central Gulf. Mesoscale feature interactions in the western GoM and BoC led to greater dispersion along the western basin. By contrast, the absence of ACE-CE interaction in the BoC led to greater retention and less connectivity between the southern and northern GoM. Under high LC intrusion, particles seeded north of the Yucatan Shelf were advected through the Florida Straits and dispersed within the GoM. The vertically integrated zonal momentum balance of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) is dominated by wind stress at the surface and topographic form stress (TFS) at the bottom. It has been argued that wind stress is transferred from the surface to the bottom by transient baroclinic eddies, via interfacial form stress, to establish the balance between wind stress and TFS. However, ocean models indicate TFS responds rapidly to changes in wind stress, suggesting that barotropic processes play a role in this balance. We investigate the dynamics governing the wind–TFS balance of the ACC and its response to wind using an idealized, wind- and buoyancy-driven channel model. We show that the balance is established and maintained at equilibrium by the barotropic dynamics. The balance results from the continuity of the flow, in which the Ekman transport at the surface, balanced by wind stress, is compensated by a return flow at depth, balanced by TFS. This leads to a match between wind stress and TFS which is independent of momentum stresses in the interior. Transient baroclinic eddies oppose the wind-driven isopycnal steepening via eddy buoyancy fluxes, which act to flatten the isopycnals. The eddy-driven isopycnal flattening corresponds to a reduction in the zonal geostrophic shear and thus a redistribution of the zonal momentum in the interior via eddy momentum stresses. The maintenance of the vertically integrated ACC momentum balance by the barotropic dynamics explains the fast response of the wind–TFS balance to changes in wind forcing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The generation of turbulent inflow conditions is a key issue in large eddy simulation (LES) or direct numerical simulation (DNS). In this paper, an improved synthetic eddy method (SEM) is proposed to generate inflow turbulence for LES and DNS. The improvements about SEM focus on the eddy radius and eddy distributions. First, the eddy radius is improved to reduce the nonphysical vortex structure on the wall caused by overestimation of the radius. Second, a sampling method using Gaussian distribution is proposed to improve the distribution of eddies, which accurately captures the randomness of turbulent structure size and is close to the actual flow field. The improved method is applied to the direct numerical simulation of the supersonic turbulent boundary layer at Mach 2.7 and the 24° compression ramp. Results indicate that the predictions yielded by the improved method are in good agreement with both DNS and experimental data. Compared to the original method, the improved method exhibits a more rapid recovery of the friction coefficient and effectively shortens the development distances. The improved SEM has enhanced the efficiency and accuracy of generating inlet turbulence, which can provide inlet turbulence boundary conditions for LES and DNS. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study employs an improved delayed detached eddy simulation method to examine the open-water performance and wake evolution of a propeller with notched blades, using an unstructured grid with 52.5 × 106 cells. The numerical method's validity was confirmed by comparing computed thrust and torque coefficients, as well as the flow field, with experimental data. The findings reveal that notched blades significantly reduce the propeller's hydrodynamic performance and accelerate wake instability. The notches introduce substantial disturbances in the surrounding flow, generating numerous small-scale vortices. These vortices interact with neighboring tip vortices, altering their topology and leading to rapid disintegration and the formation of secondary vortex structures. Increasing the number of notches further destabilizes the tip vortex system, causing tip vortices to lose coherence and become uniformly distributed in the mid-field. This study offers a detailed analysis of how notched blade configurations impact propeller performance, near-field flow characteristics, and wake evolution, providing valuable insights into the underlying mechanisms. The present work focuses on a thorough assessment of the influence of two very different numerical approaches, namely, Navier–Stokes (NS) and the lattice Boltzmann method (LBM), to simulate the flow past a three-element airfoil through zonal detached eddy simulation (ZDES). Both computations (ZDES-NS and ZDES-LBM) are compared to the reference results, namely, a wall-resolved large eddy simulation (WRLES) as well as the experimental data. It is shown that despite very different numerical modeling, the two ZDES provide very consistent results, with the first- and second-order statistics obtained with equivalent accuracy in the impingement region. In light of present results, the ZDES mode 2 (2020) turbulence model within an LBM framework appears as a judicious combination for high-lift flow applications owing to its robustness regarding the use of very fine isotropic Cartesian grids. The critical speed of eddy current braking is a vital parameter in the design of eddy current braking devices. Currently, most simulations and experiments are used to determine the critical speed, which means a lot of time costs. This paper presents two laws of critical speed variation to help designers more quickly determine the critical speed of a particular eddy current braking device. At first, the structure and the critical speed principle of permanent magnet rotary eddy current brake (PMRECB) are described. Secondly, the finite element analysis is used to verify the accuracy of the two laws. Finally, the validity of the finite element model is confirmed by the eddy current braking test. To ensure the reliable operation of high voltage cables, it is crucial to routinely inspect the lead sealing using pulsed eddy current. But nevertheless, the signals can be impacted by noise in actual engineering. While retaining the useful high-frequency information in the original signal, wavelet denoising can filter the clutter efficiently. However, previous research on wavelet denoising has only used it as a straightforward filtering tool, ignoring the impact of changing the parameters on the actual denoising effect. In this study, a more accurate evaluation index called PNCC is constructed for pulsed eddy current testing signals with a focus on maintaining the peak information. This index is then adopted as a fitness function for the particle swarm optimisation algorithm to determine the befitting wavelet denoising parameters and denoised signals. The results show that the signal-to-noise ratio of the signals after denoising is approximately 25 dB, and the distortion at the peak position is stable at about 1%. It demonstrates that the comprehensive index PNCC is a reliable metric for assessing the quality of pulsed eddy current signals. The optimal wavelet denoising parameters for pulsed eddy current signals are found to be the Sym 4 wavelet, 10-layer decomposition and Median threshold function. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recent studies have challenged the validity of the Redfield ratio. It is proposed that physical and biogeochemical processes govern the geographical variations in carbon : nitrogen : phosphorus (C : N : P) ratios. However, this proposal remains to be examined through concurrent observations of C : N : P ratios with physical and biogeochemical processes in various marine reservoirs. Here, we sampled the Arabian Sea for its C, N, and P content in organic and inorganic pools during the winter monsoon. We analyzed the role of convective mixing, eddies, and N2 fixation to explain the variation in observed elemental ratios. Convective mixing injected the cold water and enhanced the supply of N and P nutrients in the top layer (surface to 50–75 m) of the northern Arabian Sea. This led to a decrease in the N : P and C : P ratios in the particulate organic matter in the northern region, but C : N : P increased equatorward, averaging 245 : 32 : 1 in the top layer of the Arabian Sea. The variation in the elemental ratios in the top layer is best explained by the changes in water temperature. N2 fixation contributed negligibly to the N : P ratio of the export flux. The substantial decrease in N : P ratios of nutrients in the subsurface waters is most likely caused by the denitrifying conditions in the Arabian Sea. As the processes of convective mixing and eddies are are prevalent oceanic processes, our observations underpin that the interplay of these processes leads to changes in the elemental ratios globally. Despite the ubiquity of eddies at the Mid‐Atlantic Bight shelf‐break front, direct observations of frontal eddies at the shelf‐break front are historically sparse and their biological impact is mostly unknown. This study combines high resolution physical and biological snapshots of two frontal eddies with an idealized 3‐D regional model to investigate eddy formation, kinematics, upwelling patterns, and biological impacts. During May 2019, two eddies were observed in situ at the shelf‐break front. Each eddy showed evidence of nutrient and chlorophyll enhancement despite rotating in opposite directions and having different physical characteristics. Our results suggest that cyclonic eddies form as shelf waters are advected offshore and slope waters are advected shoreward, forming two filaments that spiral inward until sufficient water is entrained. Rising isohalines and upwelled slope water dye tracer within the model suggest that upwelling coincided with eddy formation and persisted for the duration of the eddy. In contrast, anticyclonic eddies form within troughs of the meandering shelf‐break front, with amplified frontal meanders creating recirculating flow. Upwelling of subsurface shelf water occurs in the form of detached cold pool waters during the formation of the anticyclonic eddies. The stability properties of each eddy type were estimated via the Burger number and suggest different ratios of baroclinic versus barotropic contributions to frontal eddy formation. Our observations and model results indicate that both eddy types may persist for more than a month and upwelling in both eddy types may have significant impacts on biological productivity of the shelf break. In situ observations of the physical and biological characteristics of these eddies are relatively scarce. Purpose: To evaluate the use of pre‐excitation gradients for eddy current–nulled convex optimized diffusion encoding (Pre‐ENCODE) to mitigate eddy current–induced image distortions in diffusion‐weighted MRI (DWI). Methods: DWI sequences using monopolar (MONO), ENCODE, and Pre‐ENCODE were evaluated in terms of the minimum achievable echo time (TE min$$ {}_{\mathrm{min}} $$) and eddy current‐induced image distortions using simulations, phantom experiments, and in vivo DWI in volunteers (N=6$$ N=6 $$). Results: Pre‐ENCODE provided a shorter TE min$$ {}_{\mathrm{min}} $$ than MONO (71.0 ±$$ \pm $$ 17.7ms vs. 77.6 ±$$ \pm $$ 22.9ms) and ENCODE (71.0 ±$$ \pm $$ 17.7ms vs. 86.2 ±$$ \pm $$ 14.2ms) in 100%$$ \% $$ of the simulated cases for a commercial 3T MRI system with b‐values ranging from 500 to 3000 s/mm 2$$ {}^2 $$ and in‐plane spatial resolutions ranging from 1.0 to 3.0mm 2$$ {}^2 $$. Image distortion was estimated by intravoxel signal variance between diffusion encoding directions near the phantom edges and was significantly lower with Pre‐ENCODE than with MONO (10.1%$$ \% $$ vs. 22.7%$$ \% $$, p=6−5$$ p={6}^{-5} $$) and comparable to ENCODE (10.1%$$ \% $$ vs. 10.4%$$ \% $$, p=0.12$$ p=0.12 $$). In vivo measurements of apparent diffusion coefficients were similar in global brain pixels (0.37 [0.28,1.45]×10−3$$ \times 1{0}^{-3} $$ mm 2$$ {}^2 $$/s vs. 0.38 [0.28,1.45]×10−3$$ \times 1{0}^{-3} $$mm 2$$ {}^2 $$/s, p=0.25$$ p=0.25 $$) and increased in edge brain pixels (0.80 [0.17,1.49]×10−3$$ \times 1{0}^{-3} $$ mm 2$$ {}^2 $$/s vs. 0.70 [0.18,1.48]×10−3$$ \times 1{0}^{-3} $$mm 2$$ {}^2 $$/s, p=0.02$$ p=0.02 $$) for MONO compared to Pre‐ENCODE. Aiming at the problem of path planning for autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) to cope with the influence of obstacles and eddies in complex marine environments, a path planning method based on an improved salp swarm algorithm (ISSA) is proposed. Firstly, the motion model of the AUV and eddy current model are constructed, including the relationship between position, velocity, attitude, and control inputs. Secondly, the improved SSA is proposed, which introduces the Levy flight strategy to enhance the algorithm's optimization seeking ability and adds a nonlinear convergence factor to enhance the convergence ability of the algorithm. The stability and robustness of the improved algorithm are verified by test functions. Finally, the ISSA is applied to AUV path planning, which optimizes the AUV travel distance, improves the search efficiency and accuracy, and avoids the local optimum of the algorithm. The ISSA enhances the adaptive ability and robustness of the algorithm by introducing a dynamic adjustment strategy and feedback mechanism. Experimental verification is carried out using a simulated marine environment. The results show that the ISSA is better than the traditional algorithm in terms of path length as well as algorithm stability, and can effectively improve the navigation performance of AUV. Seismic oceanography has been widely used in the study of internal solitary waves (ISWs) in recent years, and has achieved remarkable results. In this paper, we analyzed the multi-channel seismic reflection data in the Canterbury Basin offshore New Zealand from January 9 to January 29, 2000, collected by R/V Maurice Ewing. We observed 4 groups of ISWs (labeled ISW1s to ISW4s) on 4 seismic survey lines. We studied their waveforms and propagation speeds in detail. There are two theoretical structures used to describe the vertical waveform of ISWs: the first-order nonlinear vertical structure and the linear vertical structure. We found that ISW1s fit the nonlinear structure well, ISW3s and ISW4s fit the linear structure, and ISW2 does not fit either one. As the water depth increases, the waveforms of all ISWs gradually widen. Two satellite SAR images reveal that all ISWs generally travel shoreward across the isobaths. However, the propagation direction of ISW1s is about 354°-360° (clockwise from due north), different from the propagation directions of other ISWs (about 22°-26°), which explains why ISW1s have the largest characteristic half-height width. Meridional heat transport induced by oceanic mesoscale eddies (EHT) plays a significant role in the heat budget of the Southern Ocean (SO) but the decadal trends in EHT and its associated mechanisms are still obscure. Here, this scientific issue is investigated by combining concurrent satellite observations and Estimating the Circulation and Climate of the Ocean, Phase II (ECCO2) reanalysis data over the 24 years between 1993 and 2016. The results reveal that the surface EHTs from both satellite and ECCO2 data consistently show decadal poleward increasing trends in the SO, particularly in the latitude band of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC). In terms of average in the ACC band, the ECCO2-derived EHT over the upper 1000 m has a linear trend of 1.1 × 10−2 PW decade−1 or 16% per decade compared with its time-mean value of 0.07 PW. Diagnostic analysis based on "mixing length" theory suggests that the decadal strengthening of eddy kinetic energy (EKE) is the dominant mechanism for the increase in EHT in the SO. By performing an energy budget analysis, we further find that the decadal increase in EKE is mainly caused by the strengthened baroclinic instability of large-scale circulation that converts more available potential energy to EKE. For the strengthened baroclinic instability in the SO, it is attributed to the increasing large-scale wind stress work on the large-scale circulation corresponding to the positive phase of the Southern Annular Mode between 1993 and 2016. The decadal trends in EHT identified here may help understand decadal variations of heat storage and sea ice extent in the SO. The Southeast Tropical Indian Ocean (SETIO), dominated by the Indian Ocean monsoon, is an important source region for strong mesoscale eddies. To date, the impacts of the Indian Ocean monsoon on mesoscale eddies have not been clarified. Here we report on the dipole response of mesoscale eddy formation to monsoon transition in the SETIO, using satellite and reanalysis data sets. During the summer monsoon season, anticyclonic eddies are mainly concentrated north of 12°S, while cyclonic eddies are south of 12°S. This situation reverses during the winter monsoon season. We attribute this dipole feature to the oceanic perturbations and current shear during the different monsoon periods. A geographical boundary along 12°S aligns with meridional changes in eddy potential energy, which delineates the generation and direction of the newly‐formed eddies. The hot spot region, rich in eddy energy properties, tends to promote eddy formation and endurance during the monsoon periods. In this article, the Polynomial Chaos–Kriging (PCK) metamodel is proposed to surrogate the physical model for model-assisted probability of detection (MAPoD) analysis in eddy current non-destructive testing (ECNDT). Two popular non-intrusive metamodels, the Polynomial Chaos Expansion (PCE) and Kriging, are combined properly to replace the time-consuming boundary element method-based ECNDT forward solver for accelerating the uncertainty propagation within MAPoD analysis in NDT. In PCK, the global behaviour of the model is estimated by the trend function of PCE, and the remaining local changes of it are captured by Kriging. Both the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed PCK metamodel are demonstrated on 3D ECNDT MAPoD cases involving surface flaws on the conducting thick plate using the detecting coil with rectangular cross section. Numerical results show improved performance of PCK metamodel over PCE and Kriging metamodels, respectively, while maintaining at least two digits of accuracy of the PoD metrics. A simple and flexible mass balance approach was applied to observations of XCH4 from TROPOMI to estimate CH4 emissions over Shanxi Province, including the impacts of advective transport, pressure transport, and atmospheric diffusion. High-frequency eddy-covariance flux observations were used to constrain the driving terms of the mass balance equation. This equation was then used to calculate day-to-day and 5 km × 5 km grided CH4 emissions from May 2018 to July 2022 based on TROPOMI RPRO column CH4 observations. The Shanxi-wide emissions of CH4, 126 ± 58.8 ug/m2/s, shows a fat tail distribution and high variability on a daily time scale (the 90th percentile is 2.14 times the mean and 2.74 times the median). As the number of days in the rolling average increases, the change in the variation decreases to 128 ± 35.7 ug/m2/s at 10-day, 128 ± 19.8 ug/m2/s at 30-day and 127 ± 13.9 ug/m2/s at 90-day. The range of values of the annual mean emissions on coal mine grids within Shanxi for the years 2018 to 2022 was 122 ± 58.2, 131 ± 71.2, 111 ± 63.6, 129 ± 87.1, and 138 ± 63.4 ug/m2/s, respectively. The 5-year average emissions from TROPOMI are 131 ± 68.0 ug/m2/s versus 125 ± 94.6 ug/m2/s on the grids where the EDGAR bottom-up database also has data, indicating that those pixels with mines dominate the overall emissions in terms of both magnitude and variability. The results show that high-frequency observation-based campaigns can produce a less biased result in terms of both the spatial and temporal distribution of CH4 emissions as compared with approaches using either low-frequency data or bottom-up databases, that coal mines dominate the sources of CH4 in Shanxi, and that the observed fat tail distribution can be accounted for using this approach. A reliable and efficient rail track defect detection system is essential for maintaining rail track integrity and avoiding safety hazards and financial losses. Eddy current (EC) testing is a non-destructive technique that can be employed for this purpose. The trade-off between spatial resolution and lift-off should be carefully considered in practical applications to distinguish closely spaced cracks such as those caused by rolling contact fatigue (RCF). A multi-channel eddy current sensor array has been developed to detect defects on rails. Based on the sensor scanning data, defect reconstruction along the rails is achieved using an inverse algorithm that includes both direct and iterative approaches. In experimental evaluations, the EC system with the developed sensor is used to measure defects on a standard test piece of rail with a probe lift-off of 4–6 mm. This paper introduces an LC resonator-based single-frequency eddy current (EC) sensor designed for corrosion detection in reinforcing bars (rebars) embedded within concrete structures. The work addresses the challenges of the limited detection ranges and reduced sensitivity over longer distances, prevalent in current EC sensor applications. The sensor development process involved a systematic experimental approach to carefully selecting each parameter in the LC resonator. The sensor design aimed to assess the condition of the rebar from a distance of up to 5–6 cm outside the concrete and provide insights into different corrosion levels. By examining the characteristics of the inductors, the parallel resistance R p of the eddy current coil was identified as a key parameter reflecting the corrosion conditions in the rebar. The relationship between the R p fluctuations and temperature variations was investigated, with the data indicating that an approximately 155 Ω variation can be expected per 1 °C change within the temperature range of 20–25 °C, allowing for temperature compensation if necessary. Subsequently, the sensor's performance was evaluated by placing a rebar within a concrete block, where controlled mechanical degradation cycles were applied to simulate uniform corrosion in the rebar. Additive Manufacturing (AM) Direct Laser Fabrication (DLF) of Ti-5Al-5V-5Mo-3Cr (Ti5553) is being developed as a method for producing aircraft components. The additive manufacturing process can produce flaws near the surface, such as porosity and material voids, which act as stress raisers, leading to potential component failure. Eddy current testing was investigated to detect flaws on or near the surface of DLF Ti5553 bar samples. For this application, the objective was to develop an eddy current probe capable of detecting flaws 500 µm in diameter, located 1 mm below the component's surface. Two initial sets of coil parameters were chosen: The first, based on successful experiments that demonstrated detection of a near surface flaw in Ti5553 using a transmit-receive array probe, and the second, derived from simulation by Finite Element Method (FEM). An optimized transmit receive coil design, based on the FEM simulations, was constructed. The probe was evaluated on Ti5553 samples containing sub-surface voids of the target size, as well as samples with side-drilled holes and samples with holes drilled from the opposing inspection surface. The probe was able to effectively detect 80% of the sub-surface voids. Limitations included the probe's inability to detect sub-surface voids near sample edges and a sensitivity to surface roughness, which produces local changes in lift-off. Multifrequency mixing improved signal-to-noise ratio when surface roughness was present on average by 22%. Sun-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) holds enormous potential for accurately estimating terrestrial gross primary productivity (GPP). However, current studies often overlook the spatial representativeness of satellite SIF and GPP observations. This research downscaled TROPOMI SIF (TROPOSIF) and its enhanced product (eSIF) in China's Saihanba Forest Region to obtain high-resolution SIF data. SIF was simulated using the SCOPE model, and the downscaled SIF's reliability was validated at two forest eddy covariance (EC) sites (SHB1 and SHB2) in the study area. Subsequently, the downscaled SIF data were matched to the EC footprint of the two forest sites, and the relationship between SIF and GPP was compared at various observational scales. Additionally, the ability of downscaled TROPOSIF and eSIF to track GPP was compared, along with the correlations among several vegetation indices (VIs) and GPP. The findings reveal the following: (1) Downscaled TROPOSIF and eSIF showed a strong linear relationship with SCOPE-modeled SIF (R2 ≥ 0.86). The eSIF closely matched the SCOPE simulation (RMSE: 0.06 mw m−2 nm−1 sr−1) and displayed a more consistent seasonal variation pattern with GPP. (2) Comparisons among coarse-resolution SIF, EC footprint-averaged SIF (SIFECA), and EC footprint-weighted SIF (SIFECW) demonstrated significant improvements in the linear relationship between downscaled SIF and GPP (the R2 increased from the range of 0.47–0.65 to 0.78–0.85). SIFECW exhibited the strongest relationship with GPP, indicating that matching SIF to flux footprints improves their relationship. (3) As the distance from the flux tower increased, the relationship between SIF and GPP weakened, reaching its lowest point beyond 1 km from the tower. Moreover, in the highly heterogeneous landscape of the SHB2 site, the relationship between VIs and GPP was poor, with no clear pattern as distance from the flux tower increased. Here, we explore the dynamics of the waters of eutrophicated Lake Sevan in the modern period, using MSI Sentinel-2 satellite images of different months in different years (2017–2022) and SAR Sentinel-1 images of similar dates. The main objective of the study is to investigate the spatiotemporal variability of the horizontal circulation of this lake and to establish whether the scheme of cyclonic water circulation in the deep-water part of Large Sevan, given in a number of publications, which does not imply water exchange between its littoral and deep-water zones, corresponds to the real picture of currents in the surface layer of the lake in the summer–autumn period (period of pronounced water stratification and intense phytoplankton bloom). The analysis performed convincingly showed that there is no constant cyclonic gyre on the scale of the deep-water part of Large Sevan (≈20 km) during the period under consideration. In most cases, non-stationary eddy dynamics are observed in Large Sevan, including mesoscale and submesoscale eddies, eddy dipoles (mushroom-shaped flows), and their packings. Often the entire deep-water part of Large Sevan is occupied by a two-cell (dipole) or even three-cell (cyclonic eddy with two anticyclones of similar size) water circulation. The time scale of the observed variability is several days. Such variable water circulation in different months (i.e., with different density stratification of water) of different years in a basin with a fairly homogeneous bottom and a slight indentation of the shoreline raises the assumption that the main reason for the non-stationary dynamics in Large Sevan is the variability of the wind effect on its surface layer. The cyclonic gyre in Small Sevan (8–9 km) is a permanent element of the circulation and maintains its position north of the strait between Small and Large Sevan. This gyre and attached anticyclonic eddies in the southern part of its periphery, as well as cyclonic submesoscale eddies in the northern part of Large Sevan, close to the strait, affect the water exchange between Small and Large Sevan in both directions. An additional objective of the study is a validation of the morphometric parameters of Lake Sevan (level, surface area, and water volume), contained in the near-real time HYDROWEB database, LEGOS, France (June 1995–January 2024), based on their comparison with the corresponding values of these parameters from gauging stations in Armenia. It is shown that, with a qualitative correspondence of the nature of lake level changes according to altimetric and instrumental measurements, its values in the HYDROWEB database exceed the data of gauging stations in most cases by 1–1.5 m in 1995–2012 and 0.5–0.6 m in 2013–2022, while the corresponding surface area and volume values according to HYDROWEB data turn out to be underestimated. In order to understand the active mesoscale processes in the Kuroshio extension (KE) region, and reveal the three-dimensional structure of mesoscale eddies in this region, as well as the contributions of mesoscale eddies to water mass redistribution and ocean-atmosphere interactions, based on shipboard observations and satellite remote sensing data, this study investigates the three-dimensional structural characteristics of a typical eddy dipole composed of cyclonic eddy (CE) and an anticyclonic eddy (AE) distributed on the north and south sides of the KE axis, respectively, during June-July 2022. Results show that the CE has a southward cross-frontal motion dominated by shear forcing, while the AE remains relatively stable. The "cold tongue" structure of the CE gradually diminishes due to sea surface warming and heat diffusion from the KE axis, with the AE exhibiting a "reverse eddy sea surface temperature anomaly" structure due to the entrainment of cold water carried by the CE. The vertical multi-cores of internal temperature and salinity anomalies in the eddy dipole are related to the vertical redistribution of water masses with different characteristics. The AE's internal flow field is strongly baroclinic, with around 50% of it having a Richardson number less than the critical value of 0.25, indicating a tendency for turbulent mixing. The upper layer of the CE is barotropic, hindering substantial diapycnal mixing. This study helps to enhance understanding of the eddy dipole characteristics and internal structure of eddies in the KE region, providing information for further research on eddy dynamics. Mesoscale eddies modulate the stratification, mixing, tracer transport, and dissipation pathways of oceanic flows over a wide range of spatiotemporal scales. The parameterization of buoyancy and momentum fluxes associated with mesoscale eddies thus presents an evolving challenge for ocean modelers, particularly as modern climate models approach eddy‐permitting resolutions. Here we present a parameterization targeting such resolutions through the use of a subgrid mesoscale eddy kinetic energy budget (MEKE) framework. Our study presents two novel insights: (a) both the potential and kinetic energy effects of eddies may be parameterized via a kinetic energy backscatter, with no Gent‐McWilliams along‐isopycnal transport; (b) a dominant factor in ensuring a physically‐accurate backscatter is the vertical structure of the parameterized momentum fluxes. We present simulations of 1/2° and 1/4° resolution idealized models with backscatter applied to the equivalent barotropic mode. Remarkably, the global kinetic and potential energies, isopycnal structure, and vertical energy partitioning show significantly improved agreement with a 1/32° reference solution. Our work provides guidance on how to parameterize mesoscale eddy effects in the challenging eddy‐permitting regime. Plain Language Summary: Ocean eddies evolving on horizontal lengthscales of order 10–100 km are not sufficiently resolved in modern global ocean models that have horizontal resolutions of about 25–100 km. The under‐representation of such eddies leads to inaccuracies in the modeled ocean state, including weakened current systems, incorrect stratification, and erroneous distributions of physical and biological ocean tracers. Here we develop a novel approach to mimicking the unresolved eddy effects by artificially energizing the flow in a way that is consistent with eddy dynamics, specifically their vertical structure. We find that our approach is able to correct for a variety of unresolved eddy effects when employed in a coarse‐resolution ocean model and compared against a high‐resolution reference case. Cut-off lows (COLs) exhibit diverse structures and lifecycles, ranging from confined upper-tropospheric systems to deep, multi-level vortex structures. While COL climatologies are well documented, the mechanisms driving their deepening remain unclear. To bridge this gap, a novel track matching algorithm applied to ERA-Interim reanalysis investigates the vertical extent of Southern Hemisphere COLs. Composite analysis based on structure and eddy kinetic energy budget differentiates four COL categories: shallow, deep, weak, and strong, revealing similarities and disparities. Deep, strong COLs concentrate around Australia and the southwestern Pacific, peaking in autumn and spring, while shallow, weak COLs are more common in summer and closer to the Equator. Despite their differences, both contrasting types evolve energetically via anticyclonic Rossby wave breaking. The distinct roles of jet streams in affecting COL types are addressed: intense polar front jets correlate with more deep COLs, whereas stronger subtropical jets relate to fewer shallow COLs. The COL deepening typically occurs in the presence of a robust upstream polar front jet, which enhances ageostrophic flux convergence and baroclinic processes. The subtropical jet positively correlates with COL intensity but weakens when considering the seasonality, suggesting uncertainties in this relationship. Additionally, we highlight the significance of diabatic processes in COL deepening, addressing their misrepresentation in reanalysis and emphasizing the need for more observational and modelling studies to refine the energetic framework. Using a high‐resolution numerical model, we investigate the influence of slope topography on the vertical tilted structure of mesoscale eddies in the northern South China Sea (NSCS). The model effectively captures key features including trajectories, intensities, and three‐dimensional tilted structures of these eddies. By compositing all NSCS eddies on the slope and in the basin, a more pronounced southwestward tilt in slope eddies is found from the sea surface down to the deep, compared to basin eddies. The tilt distance of slope eddies is approximately 1.8 times that of basin eddies, with the strongest eddy tilt near the Dongsha Islands. Variations in topography gradient induce noticeable changes in both the magnitude and direction of the eddy tilt. Due to potential vorticity conservation, the eddies' lower part follows isobaths, while the upper part drifts southwestward. This rapidly increases a southward eddy tilt during the upslope phase (USP) and a gradual transition to a southwestward tilt in the downslope phase (DSP). Moreover, the lower eddy part responds more significantly and earlier (about 20 days) to topography than the upper eddy part, moving faster and tilt‐developing more rapidly. The lower eddy part tilts larger during the USP, roughly 2.5 times than that of the upper eddy part. In the subsequent DSP, the tilt of lower eddy part decreases, about half of that in the upper eddy part. This study reveals the complex interactions between mesoscale eddies and steep slope topography, aiding further understanding the dynamics of eddy tilt and propagation. Through numerical simulations, we successfully reproduce the activity of eddies in the northern South China Sea, and elaborately explore the evolution of the vertical tilted structure of these eddies. It is suggested that potential vorticity conservation causes the lower part of eddies to move more rapidly along isobaths because they are more sensitive to the topography variations. This inconsistent speed of movement between the upper layer and lower layer of the eddy leads to changes in the vertical tilted structure when encountering a sloping topography. Overall, this study is significant to enhance our understanding of the spatiotemporal evolution and the interactions between three‐dimensional oceanic eddies and topography. Periodic eddies are a type of eddy that occur almost annually in fixed timeframes with similar patterns and trajectories. Nearly every year from April to June, under the combined effect of the barotropic instability of the mean flow and wind work, a cyclonic eddy (the Taiwan Cyclonic Eddy, TCE) forms in the southwest of Taiwan, then propagates westward, and finally dissipates near the Dongsha Islands. TCE exerts a significant impact on the Kuroshio intrusion into the South China Sea (SCS) and water exchange. Based on multi‐year in situ and satellite observations, this study reveals the thermohaline structure and evolutionary process of the TCE. The evolutions of the three‐dimensional structures of temperature, salinity, and geostrophic velocity of the TCE are analyzed based on reconstructed data. The TCE shows important interannual variations associated with El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO), and the relationship between ENSO and the TCE is modulated by the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO). In the negative phase of the PDO, the intensity of the TCE is significantly correlated with the Niño‐3.4 index. In contrast, in the positive phase, the ENSO–TCE relationship becomes weak and non‐significant. Further investigations indicate that these differences are related to the establishment of the low‐latitude Pacific–East Asian Teleconnection, influencing local wind stress curl in the region. This offers a new perspective on understanding the interannual variation of periodic mesoscale eddies in the SCS. Benthic storms are episodes of intensified near‐bottom currents capable of sediment resuspension in the deep ocean. They typically occur under regions of high surface eddy kinetic energy (EKE), such as the Gulf Stream. Although they have long been observed, the mechanism(s) responsible for their formation and their relationships with salient features of the deep ocean, such as bottom mixed layers (BMLs) and benthic nepheloid layers (BNLs), remain poorly understood. Here we conduct idealized experiments with a primitive‐equation model to explore the impacts of the unforced instability of a surface‐intensified jet on near‐bottom flows of a deep zonal channel. Vertical resolution is increased near the bottom to represent the bottom boundary layer. We find that the unstable near‐surface jet develops meanders and evolves into alternating, deep‐reaching cyclones and anticyclones. Simultaneously, EKE increases near the bottom due to the convergence of vertical eddy pressure fluxes, leading to near‐bottom currents comparable to those observed during benthic storms. These currents in turn form BMLs with thickness of O(100 m) from enhanced velocity shears and turbulence production near the bottom. The deep cyclonic eddies transport fluid particles both laterally and vertically, from near the bottom through the entire BML and may contribute to the formation of the lower part of BNLs. A sloping bottom reduces both the intensity of the near‐bottom currents and the extent of vertical transport. Overall, our study highlights a significant response of the abyssal environment to near‐surface current instability, with potential implications for sediment transport in the deep ocean. The intensity of deep currents varies strongly with distance from the bottom, which creates turbulence and a well‐mixed layer adjacent to the deep seabed. In deep cyclones, particles from near the bottom can be transported upward through the entire well‐mixed layer. A steeper topographic slope reduces both the intensity of the bottom currents and the vertical displacement of particles. Overall, our study shows that the physical environment near the bottom may exhibit a strong response to the instability of surface currents, which may have a potentially significant impact on the transport of fine sediment from the seafloor. Mesoscale eddies are found almost everywhere in global ocean. They can last for weeks to months with scales up to over 100 km and play important roles in global biogeochemical cycles. In this study, we analyzed the phylogenetic and pigment type composition of Synechococcus in a cyclonic eddy (CE, cold eddy) and an anticyclonic eddy (ACE, warm eddy) located in western South China Sea in summer, 2018. Nutrients pumping enhanced Synechococcus abundance markedly in the upper euphotic layers of CE. High diversity of both phylogenetic clades and pigment types of Synechococcus were discovered in the sampling area, with clear composition difference between CE and ACE. The chromatic acclimating pigment type (PT) 3dA dominated in CE while PT 3dB dominated in ACE. The potential weak chromatic acclimator PT 3eA contributed a significant proportion in both CE and ACE. To better understand the difference of PT composition in CE and ACE, we further investigated the phylogenetic composition of Synechococcus in CE and ACE. Clade CRD 1, which were the main strains in upwelling regions, were dominant in CE, where cooler and nutrient rich subsurface water was pumped to the upper layers. Warm water adapted clade II and clade III dominated in ACE. Our study, for the first time, indicated that chromatic acclimation was important in shaping the vertical profile of Synechococcus community in mesoscale eddies of the subtropical oceans. Chromatic acclimators that are typically found in cold waters dominated in the cold eddy, while those prevailing in tropical and subtropical waters were abundant in the warm eddy. We also tried to link the two distinctive subgroups of chromatic acclimators to corresponding phylogenetic clades. Our study reveals that the physical and chemical characteristics of mesoscale eddies, including light, temperature and nutrients, shaped the community structure and biomass of Synechococcus. Diffusive‐convection (DC) staircases, characterized by interleaving well‐mixed layers and high‐gradient interfaces of thermohaline properties, are commonly observed in the Canada Basin, Arctic. Previous studies suggested a quasi‐steady state of the thermohaline structures of these staircases. In this work, we employ mooring and Ice‐Tethered Profiler (ITP) data to show emergent merger events of staircases mediated by subsurface eddies with warm cores located at 300–500 m depths in 2005, 2007 and 2009. Two types of merger events, the B‐merger (resulting from strengthening of stronger interfaces at the expense of weaker ones) and the H‐merger (produced by vertical drift and collision of staircase interfaces), are documented during the passage of subsurface eddies. The merging staircases are located at 320–450 m depths, with layers of up to 70 m thick and high‐gradient interfaces thinner than 5 m. Mooring measurements reveal the emergence of staircase mergers associated with a background Richardson number dropping from a typical magnitude of O(100) $\mathcal{O}(100)$–O(10) $\mathcal{O}(10)$ to O(0.1) $\mathcal{O}(0.1)$, indicating the persistence of DC staircases in the presence of strong shears. In parallel, ITP data suggest the formation of B‐mergers (H‐mergers) to be favored within the eddy core (flank). The vertical heat fluxes associated with the B‐merger (H‐merger) staircases are estimated to be ∼3 W/m2 (∼1.5 W/m2), which substantially exceed the typical staircase‐driven heat fluxes of O(0.1) $\mathcal{O}(0.1)$ W/m2. These observations imply the significance of subsurface eddies in shaping the halocline structures and thus the vertical heat fluxes in the Arctic Ocean, particularly in a warming climate. This study employs field measurements in the Arctic Ocean to show that staircases can be substantially re‐structured to enhance the upward heat transfer if turbulent spinning bodies of waters named eddies are present at 300–500 m depths. Further calculations show that the existence of up to three such eddies may elevate the overall heat transfer of the western Arctic by up to ∼10%. The results of experimental investigations aimed at the development of an effective eddy current technique for detection of fatigue cracks originated in the critical fillet zone of gas turbine blades fabricated of ferromagnetic steels are discussed. The proposed inspection technique is based on the use of selective eddy current probes (ECP) of double-differential type, providing high sensitivity when the clearance between the ECP operational surface and the inspected surface in the fillet zone is changed during the scanning. The experimental investigations signals from ECP of MDF 0501 type (operational surface diameter -- 5 mm) allowed minimizing the lift-off effect by selecting the optimal operational frequency and choosing the optimal scanning parameters of the inspected zone. The effectiveness of the proposed inspection technique was confirmed with the application of a real gas turbine blade with the 2 mm long and 0.2 mm deep artificial defect in the fillet zone, which characterizes the sensitivity threshold specified in accordance with the technical assignment. This study investigated the dynamic and thermal responses of cyclonic eddies (CEs) to Typhoon Surigae in the western North Pacific Ocean using satellite data and a coupled ocean–atmosphere model. Observations and simulations revealed that the typhoon enhanced the two preexisting CEs (C1 and C2). After the typhoon passed the two eddies, the sea surface height (SSH) lowered and the eddy velocity increased above 200 m. C1 was stretched with elliptical deformation accompanied by an SSH trough and jets on the sides of the typhoon track at the eddy edge. The comparative experiments indicated that the typhoon caused the SSH of C1 and C2 to lower by 53.52% and 25.14% compared to conditions without the typhoon, respectively, and the kinetic energy of C1 and C2 to increase by 12 times and 65.76%, respectively. The positive vorticity anomaly input from the typhoon to the CEs was the main mechanism for the enhancement of the CEs. The enhanced CEs modulated the typhoon-induced sea surface temperature (SST) cooling, causing the temperature within the eddies to decrease by upwelling and mixing, and the SST cooling became significant at the center of the CEs and propagated westward with the eddies. This study also revealed that typhoons can significantly perturb eddy dynamic structures by enhancing or generating cyclonic cold eddies and eradicating anticyclonic eddies, thereby weakening the Kuroshio Current transport via eddy–Kuroshio interactions. In the design of high-performance heat and mass transfer devices such as liquid-cooled heat sinks, catalytic reactors, and catalytic convertors, parallel mini/microchannels are favored owing to their special potentials. Offering low pressure drop, providing high transfer surface area to volume ratio, and being easy to manufacture and optimize have been drawing thermal and chemical engineers attention to parallel channels for past decades. When working with parallel channels, the challenge of flow maldistribution is commonly faced which decreases their efficiency significantly. System total pressure drop and flow uniformity are two parameters that determine the system performance. In the present study, a variety of practical ideas, aiming to enhance parallel channels performance, are studied numerically. Inventive manifold designs with high hydraulic performance are created through the course of this study. The results of these designs are compared with basic conventional designs which show substantial enhancement. This paper investigates an induction heating problem in a multi-component system containing a moving non-magnetic conductor. The electromagnetic process is described by the eddy current model, and the heat transfer process is governed by the convection-diffusion equation. The two processes are coupled by a restrained Joule heat source. A temporal discretization scheme is introduced to numerically solve the corresponding variational system. With the aid of the Reynolds transport theorem and a density argument, we prove the convergence of the proposed scheme as well as the well-posedness of the variational problem. Common formulations of the eddy current problem involve either vector or scalar potentials, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. An impasse arises when using scalar potential-based formulations in the presence of conductors with non-trivial topology. A remedy is to augment the approximation spaces with generators of the first cohomology group. Most existing algorithms for this require a special, e.g., hierarchical, finite element basis construction. Using insights from de Rham complex approximation with splines, we show that additional conditions are here unnecessary. Spanning tree techniques can be adapted to operate on a hexahedral mesh resulting from isomorphisms between spline spaces of differential forms and de Rham complexes on an auxiliary control mesh. Abstract Lagrangian Coherent Structures (LCS) are the hidden fluid flow skeletons that provide meaningful information about the Lagrangian circulation. In this study, we computed the monthly climatological LCSs (cLCS) maps utilizing 24 years (1994–2017) of HYbrid Coordinate Ocean Model (HYCOM) currents and ECMWF re-analysis winds in the Bay of Bengal (BoB). The seasonal reversal of winds and associated reversal of currents makes the BoB dynamic. Therefore, we primarily aim to reveal the cLCSs associated with seasonal monsoon currents and mesoscale (eddies) processes over BoB. The simulated cLCS were augmented with the complex empirical orthogonal functions to confirm the dominant lagrangian transport pattern features better. The constructed cLCS patterns show a seasonal accumulation zone and the transport pattern of freshwater plumes along the coastal region of the BoB. We further validated with the satellite imagery of real-time oil spill dispersion and modelled oil spill trajectories that match well with the LCS patterns. In addition, the application of cLCSs to study the transport of hypothetical oil spills occurring at one of the active oil exploration sites (Krishna-Godavari basin) was described. Thus, demonstrated the accumulation zones in the BoB and confirmed that the persistent monthly cLCS maps are reasonably performing well for the trajectory prediction of pollutants such as oil spills. These maps will help to initiate mitigation measures in case of any occurrence of oil spills in the future.
