Molecular dynamics simulations were performed to investigate the structural and energetic features related to the direct binding of a short interfering RNA (siRNA) molecule on a silica nanoparticle functionalized with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) groups, immersed in a sodium chloride aqueous solution at physiological concentration. Three different grafting densities of APTES were evaluated, namely, 2.7, 1.3, and 0.65 nm -2 . Structural features as a function of the grafting density were analyzed and characterized in terms of density field profiles, pair correlation functions, and hydrogen bonding. The analysis of the orientation of siRNA during the binding process suggested that the oligonucleotide anchors to the surface by one of their ends in a tilted arrangement and subsequently, it rotates toward a surface-parallel stabilized configuration. Free energy of binding between siRNA and the silica nanoparticle was computed using the adaptive biasing force scheme. The results indicate that the binding process is essentially barrierless and consistent with a thermodynamically spontaneous reaction, yielding the largest binding free energy, of about ∼-36 kcal/mol at the largest APTES grafting density. However, a favorable binding was also observed at the lowest APTES density (∼-16 kcal/mol). a fact that would be advantageous to facilitate the further release of siRNA within the cell.

Observationally, kilonovae are astrophysical transients powered by the radioactive decay of nuclei heavier than iron, thought to be synthesized in the merger of two compact objects 1-4 . Over the first few days, the kilonova evolution is dominated by a large number of radioactive isotopes contributing to the heating rate 2,5 . On timescales of weeks to months, its behaviour is predicted to differ depending on the ejecta composition and the merger remnant 6-8 . Previous work has shown that the kilonova associated with gamma-ray burst 230307A is similar to kilonova AT2017gfo (ref. 9 ), and mid-infrared spectra revealed an emission line at 2.15 micrometres that was attributed to tellurium. Here we report a multi-wavelength analysis, including publicly available James Webb Space Telescope data 9 and our own Hubble Space Telescope data, for the same gamma-ray burst. We model its evolution up to two months after the burst and show that, at these late times, the recession of the photospheric radius and the rapidly decaying bolometric luminosity (L bol  ∝ t -2.7±0.4 , where t is time) support the recombination of lanthanide-rich ejecta as they cool., (© 2024. We show, for the first time, radio measurements of the depth of shower maximum (X_{max}) of air showers induced by cosmic rays that are compared to measurements of the established fluorescence method at the same location. Using measurements at the Pierre Auger Observatory we show full compatibility between our radio and the previously published fluorescence dataset, and between a subset of air showers observed simultaneously with both radio and fluorescence techniques, a measurement setup unique to the Pierre Auger Observatory. Furthermore, we show radio X_{max} resolution as a function of energy and demonstrate the ability to make competitive high-resolution X_{max} measurements with even a sparse radio array. With this, we show that the radio technique is capable of cosmic-ray mass composition studies, both at Auger and at other experiments.

NMR-based metabolomics aims at recovering biological information by comparing spectral data from samples of biological interest and appropriate controls. Any statistical analysis performed on the data matrix relies on the proper peak alignment to produce meaningful results. Through the last decades, several peak alignment algorithms have been proposed, as well as alternatives like spectral binning or strategies for annotation and quantification, the latter depending on reference databases. Most of the alignment algorithms, mainly based on segmentation of the spectra, present limitations for regions with peak overlap or cases of frequency order exchange. Here, we present our multiplet-assisted peak alignment algorithm, a new methodology that consists of aligning peaks by matching multiplet profiles of f 1 traces from J -resolved spectra. A correspondence matrix with the linked f 1 traces is built, and multivariate data analysis can be performed on it to obtain useful information from the data, overcoming the issues of peak overlap and frequency crossovers. Statistical total correlation spectroscopy can be applied on the matrix as well, toward a better identification of molecules of interest. The results can be queried on one-dimensional (1D) 1 H databases or can be directly coupled to our previously published Chemical Shift Multiplet Database.

Knowledge of the 10B microdistribution is of great relevance in BNCT studies. Since 10B concentration assesment through neutron autoradiography depends on the correct quantification of tracks in a nuclear track detector, image acquisition and processing conditions should be controlled and verified, in order to obtain accurate results to be applied in the frame of BNCT. With this aim, an image verification process was proposed, based on parameters extracted from the quantified nuclear tracks. Track characterization was performed by selecting a set of morphological and pixel-intensity uniformity parameters from the quantified objects (area, diameter, roundness, aspect ratio, heterogeneity and clumpiness). Their distributions were studied, leading to the observation of varying behaviours in images generated by different samples and acquisition conditions. The distributions corresponding to samples coming from the BNC reaction showed similar attributes in each analyzed parameter, proving to be robust to the experimental process, but sensitive to light and focus conditions. Considering those observations, a manual feature extraction was performed as a pre-processing step. A Support Vector Machine (SVM) and a fully dense Neural Network (NN) were optimized, trained, and tested. The final performance metrics were similar for both models: 93%-93% for the SVM, vs 94%-95% for the NN in accuracy and precision respectively. Based on the distribution of the predicted class probabilities, the latter had a better capacity to reject inadequate images, so the NN was selected to perform the image verification step prior to quantification. The trained NN was able to correctly classify the images regardless of their track density. The exhaustive characterization of the nuclear tracks provided new knowledge related to the autoradiographic images generation. Background: Allergies are increasing worldwide. The presence of atopic diseases in the mother propagates the onset of allergic diseases in the offspring with a considerably stronger penetrance than atopic diseases of the father. Such observation challenges genetic predispositions as the sole cause of allergic diseases. Epidemiological studies suggest that caregiver stress in the perinatal period may predispose offspring to asthma. Only one group has studied the link between prenatal stress and neonatal asthma susceptibility in a murine model., Objectives: We aimed to study if the neonatal increased risk of developing allergic lung inflammation persists after puberty and if there are sex differences in susceptibility., Methods: Pregnant BALB/c mice were subjected to a single restraint stress exposure at day 15 of gestation. Pups were separated by gender and subjected to a well-known sub-optimal asthma model after puberty., Results: Adult mice born to stressed dams were more susceptible to developing allergic pulmonary inflammation since an increase in the number of eosinophils in bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL), a greater peribronchial and perivascular infiltrate, a higher proportion of mucus-producing cells, and increased IL-4 and IL-5 levels in BAL were detected compared to control mice. These effects were more profound in females than males. Instantons, which are nonperturbative solutions to Yang-Mills equations, provide a signal for the occurrence of quantum tunneling between distinct classes of vacua. They can give rise to decays of particles otherwise forbidden. Using data collected at the Pierre Auger Observatory, we search for signatures of such instanton-induced processes that would be suggestive of super-heavy particles decaying in the Galactic halo. These particles could have been produced during the post-inflationary epoch and match the relic abundance of dark matter inferred today. The nonobservation of the signatures searched for allows us to derive a bound on the reduced coupling constant of gauge interactions in the dark sector: α&#95;{X}≲0.09, for 10^{9}≲M&#95;{X}/GeV<10^{19}. Conversely, we obtain that, for instance, a reduced coupling constant α&#95;{X}=0.09 excludes masses M&#95;{X}≳3×10^{13}  GeV. In the context of dark matter production from gravitational interactions alone, we illustrate how these bounds are complementary to those obtained on the Hubble rate at the end of inflation from the nonobservation of tensor modes in the cosmological microwave background.

Background: Artificial pancreas design using subcutaneous insulin infusion without pre-meal feed-forward boluses often induces an over-response leading to hypoglycemia due to the increase of blood insulin concentration sustained in time. The objective of this work was to create an algorithm for controlling the function of insulin pumps in closed-loop systems to improve blood glucose management in type 1 diabetic patients by mimicking the pulsatile behaviour of the pancreas., Methods: A controller tuned in a pulsatile way promotes damped oscillations of blood insulin concentration injected through an insulin pump. We tested it in a simulated environment, using nine 'in silica' subjects. The control algorithm is founded on feedback linearization where through a change of variables, the nonlinear system turns into an equivalent linear system, suitable for implementing through a PID controller. We compared the results obtained 'in silica' with the volume injected by an insulin pump controlled by this algorithm., Results: The use of this algorithm resulted in a pulsatile control of postprandial blood glucose concentration, avoiding hypoglycaemic episodes. The results obtained 'in silica' were replicated in a real pump 'in vitro'., Conclusions: With this proposed linear system, an appropriate control input can be designed. The controller works with a damped pulsatile pattern making the insulin infusion from the pump and blood insulin concentration pulsatile. This operational would improve the performance of an artificial pancreas.

One of the main problems in controlling COVID-19 epidemic spread is the delay in confirming cases. Having information on changes in the epidemic evolution or outbreaks rise before laboratory-confirmation is crucial in decision making for Public Health policies. We present an algorithm to estimate on-stream the number of COVID-19 cases using the data from telephone calls to a COVID-line. By modelling the calls as background (proportional to population) plus signal (proportional to infected), we fit the calls in Province of Buenos Aires (Argentina) with coefficient of determination R 2 > 0.85. This result allows us to estimate the number of cases given the number of calls from a specific district, days before the laboratory results are available. We validate the algorithm with real data. We show how to use the algorithm to track on-stream the epidemic, and present the Early Outbreak Alarm to detect outbreaks in advance of laboratory results. One key point in the developed algorithm is a detailed track of the uncertainties in the estimations, since the alarm uses the significance of the observables as a main indicator to detect an anomaly. We present the details of the explicit example in Villa Azul (Quilmes) where this tool resulted crucial to control an outbreak on time. The presented tools have been designed in urgency with the available data at the time of the development, and therefore have their limitations which we describe and discuss. We present the next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) calculation for single-inclusive jet production in polarized deep inelastic lepton-nucleon scattering e[over →]p[over →]→jet+X. We perform the computation based on the projection-to-Born method by combining our recent next-to-leading order result for di-jet production in polarized deep inelastic lepton-nucleon scattering along with the NNLO coefficients for the inclusive cross section. In this way, we achieve NNLO accuracy in a fully exclusive way for single-jet observables, the first time for a polarized cross section. We study the perturbative stability and phenomenological consequences of the QCD corrections for Electron-Ion Collider kinematics.

NMR-based metabolomics requires proper identification of metabolites to draw conclusions from the system under study. Normally, multivariate data analysis is performed using 1D 1 H NMR spectra, and identification of peaks (and then compounds) relevant to the classification is accomplished using database queries as a first step. 1D 1 H NMR spectra of complex mixtures often suffer from peak overlap. To overcome this issue, several studies employed the projections of the (tilted and symmetrized) 2D 1 H J -resolved (JRES) spectra, p-JRES, which are similar to 1D 1 H decoupled spectra. Nonetheless, there are no public databases available that allow searching for chemical shift spectral data for multiplets. We present the Chemical Shift Multiplet Database (CSMDB), built utilizing JRES spectra obtained from the Birmingham Metabolite Library. The CSMDB provides scoring accounting for both matched and unmatched peaks from a query list and the database hits. This input list is generated from a projection of a 2D statistical correlation analysis on the JRES spectra, p-(JRES-STOCSY), being able to compare the multiplets for the matched peaks, in essence, the f1 traces from the JRES-STOCSY spectrum and from the database hit. The inspection of the unmatched peaks for the database hit allows the retrieval of peaks in the query list that have a decreased correlation coefficient due to low intensities. The CSMDB is coupled to "ConQuer ABC", which permits the assessment of biological correlation by means of consecutive queries with the unmatched peaks in the first and subsequent queries.

The interiors of giant planets remain poorly understood. Even for the planets in the Solar System, difficulties in observation lead to large uncertainties in the properties of planetary cores. Exoplanets that have undergone rare evolutionary processes provide a route to understanding planetary interiors. Planets found in and near the typically barren hot-Neptune 'desert' 1,2 (a region in mass-radius space that contains few planets) have proved to be particularly valuable in this regard. These planets include HD149026b 3 , which is thought to have an unusually massive core, and recent discoveries such as LTT9779b 4 and NGTS-4b 5 , on which photoevaporation has removed a substantial part of their outer atmospheres. Here we report observations of the planet TOI-849b, which has a radius smaller than Neptune's but an anomalously large mass of [Formula: see text] Earth masses and a density of [Formula: see text] grams per cubic centimetre, similar to Earth's. Interior-structure models suggest that any gaseous envelope of pure hydrogen and helium consists of no more than [Formula: see text] per cent of the total planetary mass. The planet could have been a gas giant before undergoing extreme mass loss via thermal self-disruption or giant planet collisions, or it could have avoided substantial gas accretion, perhaps through gap opening or late formation 6 . Although photoevaporation rates cannot account for the mass loss required to reduce a Jupiter-like gas giant, they can remove a small (a few Earth masses) hydrogen and helium envelope on timescales of several billion years, implying that any remaining atmosphere on TOI-849b is likely to be enriched by water or other volatiles from the planetary interior. We conclude that TOI-849b is the remnant core of a giant planet.

We consider a Josephson junction hosting a Kramers pair of helical edge states of a quantum spin Hall bar in contact with a normal-metal probe. In this hybrid system, the orbital phase, induced by a small magnetic field threading the junction known as a Doppler shift, combines with the conventional Josephson phase difference and originates an effect akin to a Zeeman field in the spectrum. As a consequence, when a temperature bias is applied to the superconducting terminals, a thermoelectric current is established in the normal probe. We argue that this purely nonlocal thermoelectric effect is a unique signature of the helical nature of the edge states coupled to superconducting leads and it can constitute a useful tool for probing the helical nature of the edge states in systems where the Hall bar configuration is difficult to achieve. We fully characterize thermoelectric response and performance of this hybrid junction in a wide range of parameters, demonstrating that the external magnetic flux inducing the Doppler shift can be used as a knob to control the thermoelectric response and the heat flow in a novel device based on topological junctions.

Using path-integral molecular dynamics simulations, we examine isomerization paths involving collective proton transfers in [H 2 O] 5 and [H 2 O] 8 clusters under cryogenic conditions. We focused attention on combined effects derived from solvation and nuclear quantum fluctuations on the characteristics of free energy barriers and relative stabilities of reactants and products. In particular, we analyzed two different processes: the first one involves the exchange of donor-acceptor hydrogen bond roles along cyclic moieties, whereas the second one corresponds to charge separation leading to stable [H 3 O] + [OH] - ion pairs. In the first case, the explicit incorporation of quantum tunneling introduces important modifications in the classical free energy profile. The resulting quantum profile presents two main contributions, one corresponding to compressions of O-O distances and a second one ascribed to nuclear tunneling of the light protons. Solvation effects promote a moderate polarization of the cyclic structures and a partial loss of concertedness in the collective modes, most notably, at the onset of tunneling. Still, the latter effects are also sufficiently strong to promote the stabilization of ion pairs along the classical trajectories. In contrast, the explicit incorporation of nuclear quantum fluctuations leads to charge separated configurations that are marginally stable. As such, the latter states could also be regarded as short-lived intermediate states along the reactive exchange path.

We study the thermoelectric properties of a Kramers pair of helical edge states of the quantum spin Hall effect coupled to a nanomagnet with a component of the magnetization perpendicular to the direction of the spin-orbit interaction of the host. We show that the transmission function of this structure has the desired qualities for optimal thermoelectric performance in the quantum coherent regime. For a single magnetic domain, there is a power generation close to the optimal bound. In a configuration with two magnetic domains with different orientations, pronounced peaks in the transmission functions and resonances lead to a high figure of merit. We provide estimates for the fabrication of this device with HgTe quantum-well topological insulators.

The identification of metabolites in complex biological matrices is a challenging task in 1D 1 H-NMR-based metabolomics studies. Statistical total correlation spectroscopy (STOCSY) has emerged for aiding the structural elucidation by revealing the peaks that present a high correlation to a driver peak of interest (which would likely belong to the same molecule). However, in these studies, the signals from metabolites are normally present as a mixture of overlapping resonances, limiting the performance of STOCSY. As an alternative to avoid the overlap issue, 2D 1 H homonuclear J-resolved (JRES) spectra were projected, in their usual tilted and symmetrized processed form, and STOCSY was applied on these 1D projections (p-JRES-STOCSY). Nonetheless, this approach suffers in cases where the signals are very close. In addition, STOCSY was applied to the whole JRES spectra (also tilted) to identify correlated multiplets, although the overlap issue in itself was not addressed directly and the subsequent search in databases is complicated in cases of higher order coupling. With these limitations in mind, in the present work, we propose a new methodology based on the application of STOCSY on a set of nontilted JRES spectra, detecting peaks that would overlap in 1D spectra of the same sample set. Correlation comparison analysis for peak overlap detection (COCOA-POD) is able to reconstruct projected 1D STOCSY traces that result in more suitable database queries, as all peaks are summed at their f2 resonances instead of the resonance corresponding to the multiplet center in the tilted JRES spectra. (The peak dispersion and resolution enhancement gained are not sacrificed by the projection.) Besides improving database queries with better peak lists obtained from the projections of the 2D STOCSY analysis, the overlap region is examined, and the multiplet itself is analyzed from the correlation trace at 45° to obtain a cleaner multiplet profile, free from contributions from uncorrelated neighboring peaks.

We consider the extension of the CMW soft-gluon effective coupling [1] in the context of soft-gluon resummation for QCD hard-scattering observables beyond the next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy. We present two proposals of a soft-gluon effective coupling that extend the CMW coupling to all perturbative orders in the MS ¯ coupling α S . Although both effective couplings are well-defined in the physical four-dimensional space time, we examine their behaviour in d = 4 - 2 ϵ space time dimensions. We uncover an all-order perturbative relation with the cusp anomalous dimension: the (four dimensional) cusp anomalous dimension is equal to the d -dimensional soft-gluon effective coupling at the conformal point ϵ = β ( α S ) , where the d -dimensional QCD β -function, β ( α S ) - ϵ , vanishes. We present the explicit expressions of the two soft-gluon couplings up to O ( α S 2 ) in d dimensions. In the four-dimensional case we compute the two soft couplings up to O ( α S 3 ) . For one of the two couplings, we confirm the O ( α S 3 ) result previously presented by other authors. For the other coupling, we obtain the explicit relation with the cusp anomalous dimension up to O ( α S 4 ) . We comment on Casimir scaling at O ( α S 4 ) ., (© The Author(s) 2019.)

Glycol ethers, or glymes, have been recognized as good candidates as solvents for lithium-air batteries because they exhibit relatively good stability in the presence of superoxide radicals. Diglyme (bis(2-methoxy-ethyl)ether), in spite of its low donor number, has been found to promote the solution mechanism for the formation of Li 2 O 2 during the discharge reaction, leading to large deposits, that is, high capacities. It has been suggested that lithium salt association in these types of solvents could be responsible for this behavior. Thus, the knowledge of the speciation and transport behavior of lithium salts in these types of solvents is relevant for the optimization of the lithium-air battery performance. In this work, a comprehensive study of lithium trifluoromethanesulfonate (LiTf) and lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI) in 1,2-di-methoxyethane (DME) and diglyme, over a wide range of concentrations, have been performed. Consistent ion pairs and triplet ions formation constants have been obtained by resorting to well-known equations that describe the concentration dependence of the molar conductivities in highly associated electrolytes, and we found that the system LiTf/DME would be the best to promote bulky Li 2 O 2 deposits. Unexpected differences are observed for the association constants of LiTf and, to a lesser extent, for LiTFSI, in DME and diglyme, whose dielectric constants are similar. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations allowed us to rationalize these differences in terms of the competing interactions of the O-sites of the ethers and the SO x groups of the corresponding anions with Li + ion. The limiting Li + diffusivity derived from the fractional Walden rule agrees quite well with those obtained from MD simulations, when solvent viscosity is conveniently rescaled., Competing Interests: The authors declare no competing financial interest.

We investigate the dynamics of interfacial waters in dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC) bilayers upon the addition of cholesterol, by molecular dynamics simulations. Our data reveal that the inclusion of cholesterol modifies the membrane aqueous interfacial dynamics: waters diffuse faster, their rotational decay time is shorter, and the DPPC/water hydrogen bond dynamics relaxes faster than in the pure DPPC membrane. The observed acceleration of the translational water dynamics agrees with recent experimental results, in which, by means of NMR techniques, an increment of the surface water diffusivity is measured upon the addition of cholesterol. A microscopic analysis of the lipid/water hydrogen bond network at the interfacial region suggests that the mechanism underlying the observed water mobility enhancement is given by the rupture of a fraction of interlipid water bridge hydrogen bonds connecting two different DPPC molecules, concomitant to the formation of new lipid/solvent bonds, whose dynamics is faster than that of the former. The consideration of a simple two-state model for the decay of the hydrogen bond correlation function yielded excellent results, obtaining two well-separated characteristic time scales: a slow one (∼250 ps) associated with bonds linking two DPPC molecules, and a fast one (∼15 ps), related to DPPC/solvent bonds.

Time-reversal-invariant topological superconducting (TRITOPS) wires are known to host a fractional spin ℏ/4 at their ends. We investigate how this fractional spin affects the Josephson current in a TRITOPS-quantum dot-TRITOPS Josephson junction, describing the wire in a model that can be tuned between a topological and a nontopological phase. We compute the equilibrium Josephson current of the full model by continuous-time Monte Carlo simulations and interpret the results within an effective low-energy theory. We show that in the topological phase, the 0-to-π transition is quenched via formation of a spin singlet from the quantum-dot spin and the fractional spins associated with the two adjacent topological superconductors.

We present molecular dynamics simulation results describing proton/deuteron exchange equilibria along hydrogen bonds at the vicinity of HX acids (X = F, I) in aqueous clusters at low temperatures. To allow for an adequate description of proton transfer processes, our simulation scheme resorted on the implementation of a multistate empirical valence bond hamiltonian coupled to a path integral scheme to account for effects derived from nuclear quantum fluctuations. We focused attention on clusters comprising a number of water molecules close to the threshold values necessary to stabilize contact-ion-pairs. For X = F, our results reveal a clear propensity of the heavy isotope to lie at the bond bridging the halide to the nearest water molecule. Contrasting, for X = I, the thermodynamic stability is reversed and the former connectivity is preferentially articulated via the light isotope. These trends remain valid for undissociated and ionic descriptions of the stable valence bond states. The preferences are rationalized in terms of differences in the quantum kinetic energies of the isotopes which, in turn, reflect the extent of the local spatial confinements prevailing along the different hydrogen bonds in the clusters. In most cases, these features are also clearly reflected in the characteristics of the corresponding stretching bands of the simulated infrared spectra. This opens interesting possibilities to gauge the extent of the isotopic thermodynamic stabilizations and the strengths of the different hydrogen bonds by following the magnitudes and shifts of the spectral signals in temperature-controlled experiments, performed on mixed clusters combining H2O and HOD.

Enantiomeric 2,3,4-tris(hydroxyalkyl)-5-phenylpyrrolidines have been synthesized from the major cycloadducts obtained by the 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition of sugar enones with azomethine ylides derived from natural amino acids. Reduction of the ketone carbonyl group of the cycloadducts, which possess a basic structure of bicyclic 6-(menthyloxy)hexahydropyrano[4,3-c]pyrrol-7(6H)one, afforded a number of pyrrolidine-based bicyclic systems. A sequence of reactions, which involved hydrolysis of the menthyloxy substituent, reduction, N-protection, and degradative oxidation, afforded varied pyrrolidine structures having diverse configurations and patterns of substitution; in particular, polyhydroxylated derivatives have been obtained. The unprotected products were isolated as pyrrolidinium trifluoroacetates. Because of the furanose-like nature of the target trihydroxyalkyl pyrrolidines, these molecules have been evaluated as inhibitors of the β-galactofuranosidase from Penicillium fellutanum. The compounds showed practically no inhibitory activity for concentration of pyrrolidines in the range of 0.1-1.6 mM.

The iboprufen delivery process from cylindrical silica pores of 3 nm diameter, with polyamine chains anchored at the pore outlets, was investigated by means of massive molecular dynamics simulations. Effects from pH were introduced by considering polyamine chains with different degrees of protonation. High, low, and intermediate pH environments were investigated. The increment of the acidity of the environment leads to a significant decrease of the pore aperture, yielding an effective diameter, for the lowest pH case, that is 3.5 times smaller than the one associated with the highest pH one. Using a biased sampling procedure, Gibbs free energy profiles for the ibuprofen delivery process were obtained. The joint analysis of the corresponding profiles, time evolution of the ibuprofen position within the channel, orientation of the molecule, and instantaneous effective diameter of the gate suggest a three-step mechanism for ibuprofen delivery. A complementary analysis of the translational mobility of ibuprofen along the axial direction of the channel revealed a subdiffusive dynamics in the low and intermediate pH cases. Deviations from Brownian diffusive dynamics are discussed and compared with direct experimental results.

Using molecular dynamics techniques, we examine structural and dynamical characteristics of liquid-like imidazole (Im) monolayers physisorbed onto a planar graphite sheet, at T = 384 K. Our simulations reveal that molecular orientations in the saturated monolayer exhibit a bistable distribution, characterized by an inner parallel arrangement of the molecules in close contact with the substrate and a slanted alignment, in those lying in adjacent, outer locations. Compared to the results found in three-dimensional, bulk phases, the analysis of the spatial correlations between sites participating in hydrogen bonding shows a clear enhancement of the intermolecular interactions, which also leads to stronger dipolar correlations. As a result, the gross structural features of the monolayer can be cast in terms of mesoscopic domains, comprising units articulated via winding hydrogen bonds, that persist along typical time intervals of a few tens of picoseconds. On the dynamical side, a similar comparison of the characteristic decorrelation time for orientational motions shows a 4-fold increment. Contrasting, the reduction of the system dimensionality leads to a larger diffusion constant. Possible substrate-induced anisotropies in the diffusive motions are also investigated.

We have studied 1:1 inclusion complexes of two imidazole-based ionic liquids within β-cyclodextrin: 1-dodecyl-3-methylimidazolium and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium. By means of an adaptive biasing force scheme, we obtained the free energy profile along two different pathways, differing in the orientations of the head-to-tail vector with respect to the primary-secondary rim axis. Regarding 1-dodecyl-3-methylimidazolium, we found one minimum energy structure for each pathway, in which the hydrophobic tail remains embedded within the cyclodextrin, while the headgroup lies ∼11-12 Å from one of the rims; the structure where the polar head lies near the primary rim is the most stable. The analysis of the free energy of encapsulation of 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium shows two minima for each insertion pathway, each of them associated with configurations where the imidazolium head lies close to one of the polar rims. As such, the most stable structure corresponds to one where the hydrophobic tail lies embedded within the cyclodextrin, while its head is localized near the secondary rim. The results are interpreted in terms of a simple model which captures the essential features that control the encapsulation process. A comparison with available experimental data is presented.

Graphene plasmons promise unique possibilities for controlling light in nanoscale devices and for merging optics with electronics. We developed a versatile platform technology based on resonant optical antennas and conductivity patterns for launching and control of propagating graphene plasmons, an essential step for the development of graphene plasmonic circuits. We launched and focused infrared graphene plasmons with geometrically tailored antennas and observed how they refracted when passing through a two-dimensional conductivity pattern, here a prism-shaped bilayer. To that end, we directly mapped the graphene plasmon wavefronts by means of an imaging method that will be useful in testing future design concepts for nanoscale graphene plasmonic circuits and devices., (Copyright © 2014, American Association for the Advancement of Science.)
