This work focuses on the modeling and mathematical analysis of asymptotic models used in oceanography describing long wave propagation.This thesis aims to derive and justify new asymptotic models taking into account the variation in topography and cross-section.To do so, several hypotheses are formulated on water depth and cross-sectional deformations. The first part of this thesis is to put the problem into equations, and to find asymptotic models and study them mathematically, see the linear analysis of dispersion and shoaling.In the second part, a one-dimensional model of section-averaged long waves is developed. Three-dimensional equations of motion of non-viscous and incompressible fluids are first integrated over a cross-section of the channel, resulting in the SGN-type equations. Therefore, the new model is adequate to describe fully non-linear and weakly dispersive waves along a channel of an arbitrary and non-uniform cross-section. Specifically, the new model extends the Saint-Venant model to cross-section mean and generalizes the Serre-Green-Naghdi equations to any cross-section.This new model has been reformulated in a way more appropriate for numerical resolution by maintaining the same order of accuracy as the original and improving its propertiesof dispersion. Finally, we present some numerical simulations to study the influence of the change of section on the propagation of a solitary wave.The last part of this thesis is devoted to the numerical simulation of the SGN model with a new reformulation.; Cette thèse porte sur la modélisation et l'analyse mathématique de modèles asymptotiques utilisés en océanographie et décrivant la propagation des ondes longues.L'objectif de cette thèse est de construire et de justifier de nouveaux modèles asymptotiques en tenant compte de la variation de la topographie et de la section transversale.Pour ce faire, plusieurs hypothèses sont formulées sur la profondeur de l'eau et les déformations de la section transversale. La première partie de cette thèse consiste à mettre le problème en équations et à trouver des modèles asymptotiques et à les étudier mathématiquement, voir l'analyse linéaire de la dispersion et de shoaling.Dans la deuxième partie, un modèle unidimensionnel des ondes longues, moyennées par section, est développé. Des équations tridimensionnelles du mouvement des fluides non visqueux et incompressibles sont d'abord intégrées sur une section transversale du canal, ce qui donne les équations de type SGN. Le nouveau modèle est donc adéquat pour décrire des ondes fortement non linéaires et faiblement dispersives le long d'un canal de section transversale arbitraire et non uniforme. Plus précisément, le nouveau modèle étend le modèle de Saint-Venant à moyenne de section et généralise les équations de Serre-Green-Naghdi à toute section.Ce nouveau modèle a été reformulé d'une manière plus appropriée pour la résolution numérique en conservant le même ordre de précision que l'original et en améliorant ses propriétés de dispersion. Enfin, nous présentons quelques simulations numériques pour étudier l'influence du changement de section sur la propagation d'une onde solitaire.La dernière partie de cette thèse est consacrée à la simulation numérique du modèle SGN avec une nouvelle reformulation.

Hydropower plants restricts the fish migration in rivers. Thus, several devices have been installed in hydropower plants to facilitate fish passage. The bases for the design and sizing of these devices, called "fishfriendly water intakes", were defined in 2008 by Courret & Larinier based on feedback acquired in France and abroad. Hydraulic studies on a reduced model of trash rack, a component of the water intake, then confirmed certain criteria concerning the installation of trash racks and the design of the associated bypasses. They also led to produce head loss formulas adapted to the tested configurations in order to predict energy loss resulting to trash rack implementation in hydropower plants. This thesis explores new concepts of fishfriendly trash racks (rack placed at the inlet of the turbines to prevent fish passage) which minimize head losses for producers and which are suitable for downstream fish migration. First, an optimization of inclined trash racks is proposed with different bar shapes and the addition of the effect of the supports that maintains the trash racks. The flow upstream this type of racks is then studied in-situ in order to assess the effectiveness of the first fishfriendly trash racks installed in hydropower plants with numerical simulations carried out in parallel. Secondly, new physical barriers are studied. The angled trash racks with horizontal bars were tested and show a favorable guidance of the fish and a low head loss whose model is inclined trash racks one. The second new solution explored is the perforated plate, which has proven to be as effective as the inclined trash rack in terms of fish guidance with the advantage of minimizing further the head losses.; La présence des centrales hydroélectriques restreint la circulation des poissons migrateurs dans les rivières. Plusieurs dispositifs ont été, donc, aménagés dans ces centrales afin de faciliter leur passage. Les bases de conception et de dimensionnement de ces dispositifs, dénommés "prises d’eau ichtyocompatibles", ont été définies en 2008 par Courret & Larinier à partir des retours d’expérience acquis en France et à l’étranger. Des études hydrauliques sur des modèles réduits de grille, un des composant des prises d’eau, ont ensuite permis de confirmer ou préciser certains critères concernant leur implantation et la conception des exutoires associés. Il en résulte aussi des formules d’évaluation des pertes de charge adaptées aux configurations testées afin de quantifier la perte d’énergie résultante à l’installation de ces grilles. Cette thèse vient explorer de nouveaux concepts de grilles ichtyocompatibles (grille placée à l’entrée des turbines afin d’en dévier le poisson et lui permettre de continuer sa migration) qui minimisent les pertes de charges pour les producteurs et qui sont adaptées à la dévalaison des poissons. Dans un premier temps, une optimisation des grilles inclinées est proposée avec des formes de barreau différentes et l’ajout de l’effet des supports qui maintiennent les grilles. La courantologie de ce type de grille est ensuite étudiée in-situ afin d’évaluer l’efficacité des premières grilles ichtyocompatibles implantées dans les centrales hydroélectriques en appui des simulations numériques réalisées parallèlement. Dans un deuxième temps, de nouvelles barrières physiques sont étudiées. D’abord, les grilles orientées à barreaux horizontaux sont testées et montrent un guidage de poissons favorable et une perte de charge faible. La deuxième nouvelle solution explorée est la plaque perforée, qui s’est avérée aussi efficace que la grille inclinée en terme de guidage de poisson avec l’avantage de minimiser encore plus les pertes de charge.

According to the Ministry of Ecological and Solidarity Transition, floods are the main natural risk in France. As a result of climate change, extreme floods will become more frequent. People and property, such as housing and industrial installations, must therefore be protected against these floods for which data are very scarce or even non-existent. When moving from low to extreme flooding, the spatial extent of flooding in the floodplain varies greatly. The nature of the obstacles encountered varies: low vegetation, trees, houses... These hydraulic obstacles or macro-roughnesses can be emerged, or slightly submerged.The purpose of this thesis work is to analyze the dominant physical processes associated with extreme flood flows in the presence of emerged or slightly submerged obstacles. This thesis is organized in two parts: an experimental part and a numerical part.The experimental part concerns the exploration, in a laboratory channel, of the vertical structure of the velocity profile and the geometric effects related to the studied configuration representing an urbanized floodplain with immersion rates of (dollar symbol) D/h = 0.42, 0.93, 0.98(dollar symbol) and (dollar symbol)1.48(dollar symbol) ((dollar symbol) D(dollar symbol) being the water depth and (dollar symbol)h(dollar symbol) the obstacle height). ADV and PIV measurements of mean velocities and turbulent fluctuations have shown that flow properties change significantly depending on whether the obstacles are emerged or slightly submerged. The interactions between vortex detachment, the free surface, obstacles, and bottom roughness are studied.The numerical part analyses different types of modelling conventionally used to simulate flood events. The experimental case of the thesis serves as a reference.First, an analytical model based on the conservation of momentum of an elementary hydraulic volume allows considering different models of the overall flow resistance to obstacles in a uniform regime. The first simple model integrates the resistance to flow due to bottom friction and obstacles in a single "friction" type term. A second model divides the flow resistance into two parts: a bottom friction term and an obstacle resistance, represented by a drag coefficient. The obstruction to the flow is then represented by a porosity coefficient.The analysis focuses on the ability to use friction or drag coefficients calibrated for the lowest flow rates to simulate high flow rates, and in particular, the transition from emergent to submergent obstacle flows.Then, the obstacles are explicitly represented in a two-dimensional Shallow-Water model. Mesh convergence is studied and a comparative analysis of experimental and simulated results is conducted.Furthermore, the ingluence of the geometric distribution of obstacles on the vertical profile of the average longitudinal velocity is studied with 3D-LES model using Code_Saturne. The experimental results serve as a reference case for validation.Recommendations are made for how to model these flows for operational applications; Selon le Ministère de la Transition Écologique et Solidaire, les inondations sont le principal risque naturel en France. Du fait du dérèglement climatique, les inondations extrêmes deviendront plus fréquentes. Les personnes et les biens, i.e. habitations, installations industrielles, doivent donc être protégés contre ces crues pour lesquelles les données sont très rares voire inexistantes. Lorsque l’on passe d’une crue faible à une crue extrême, l’extension spatiale de l’inondation en lit majeur varie fortement. La nature des obstacles rencontrés varie : végétation basse, arbres, habitations... Ces obstacles ou macro-rugosités hydrauliques peuvent être émergés, ou faiblement immergés.Le but de ce travail de thèse est d’analyser les processus physiques dominants associés à des écoulements de crues extrêmes en présence d’obstacles émergés ou faiblement submergés. Cette thèse s’organise en deux parties : une partie expérimentale et une partie numérique.La partie expérimentale porte sur l’exploration, dans un canal de laboratoire, de la structure verticale du profil de vitesse et des effets géométriques liés à la configuration étudiée représentant une plaine d’inondation urbanisée avec des taux d’immersion de (symbole dollar) D/h = à 0,42 ; 0,93 ; 0,98(symbole dollar) et (symbole dollar)1,48(symbole dollar) ((symbole dollar) D(symbole dollar) étant la hauteur d’eau et (symbole dollar) h(symbole dollar) la hauteur de l’obstacle). Des mesures ADV et PIV des vitesses moyennes et des fluctuations turbulentes ont montré que les propriétés de l’écoulement changent notablement selon que les écoulements sont émergés ou faiblement submergés. Les interactions entre le détachement tourbillonnaire, la surface libre, les obstacles et la rugosité de fond sont étudiées.La partie numérique analyse différents types de modélisation classiquement utilisés pour simuler des événements de crue. Le cas expérimental de la première partie de thèse sert de référence.D'abord, un modèle analytique basé sur l’écriture du bilan de quantité de mouvement au niveau d’un volume hydraulique élémentaire permet de considérer différentes modélisations de la résistance globale à l’écoulement d'obstacles en régime uniforme. Un premier modèle simple intègre la résistance à l’écoulement du au frottement de fond et aux obstacles dans un même terme de type « frottement~». Un second modèle décompose en deux parties la résistance à l’écoulement~: un frottement de fond et une résistance due aux obstacles représentée par un terme de traînée. L’obstruction à l’écoulement sera alors représentée par un terme de porosité.L’analyse porte sur la pertinence d’utiliser les coefficients de frottement ou de traînée calibrés pour l’écoulement avec le plus faible débit pour simuler des écoulements à fort débit et en particulier la transition de l’émergence à la submergence des obstacles.Ensuite, les obstacles seront représentés explicitement dans le cadre d’un modèle « Saint-Venant » bidimensionnel. La convergence en maillage est étudiée et une analyse comparative des résultats expérimentaux et simulés est menée. De plus,L’influence de la répartition géométrique des obstacles sur le profil vertical de la vitesse moyenne longitudinale est étudiée avec une modélisation 3D-LES utilisant Code_Saturne. Les résultats expérimentaux serviront de cas de référence pour la validation.Au terme de cette seconde partie de thèse, des recommandations seront émises pour modéliser de façon pertinente ces écoulements au regard d’objectifs opérationnels

Scour at the foot of the seawalls (toe-scour) is one of the major causes of structural damage to sea-walls, involved in 12% of directly-observed damages. For engineering purposes, simple empirical approaches are often used to predict toe-scour but these are often limited. And whilst data from field observations and experimental studies are both very valuable, they both suffer from practical limitations. Experimental work for example is limited by similarity constraints and full scale experiments are expensive, without allowing detailed control of individual parameters. Numerical simulations therefore offer an interesting alternative but they are not without challenges. The first problem is the correct modelling of free surface dynamics including wave breaking processes. The second is modelling the scour development process and its feedback on the flow pattern. Finally, to be practically useful, the method should be robust and use reasonably affordable computational resources for full-scale simulation.This thesis describes the development of an integrated numerical model is based on OpenFOAM – an open source CFD platform – which includes free surface dynamics, sediment transport and bed deformation processes. The free surface dynamics are modeled using the Volume of Fluid (VOF) method with wave generation and absorption capabilities based on the use of a relaxation zone. The sediment transport process is calculated based on the bed load and suspended load approach and solved in the bed boundary using the Finite Area Method. The bed deformation is calculated using the sediment continuity equation, and the mesh is updated to take account the bed change.Several calibration tests have been performed to determine the model capabilities. Firstly, a sensitivity analysis was performed to characterize the influence of mesh size and numerical schemes on wave propagation. Secondly, several methods were compared for eliminating unwanted wave reflection. The model was then used to compute the wave-induced mass transport velocity in a closed flume, and the results compared with the theoretical solution and experimental data. It is shown that the failure to model correctly the pressure condition at the free surface leads to an overestimate of the drift close to the surface, which has to be compensated by an excessive negative drift in the body of the fluid. Fourth, the bed shear stress calculation is tested by studying the case of an oscillatory flow boundary layer. Two methods for computing the bed shear stress have been devised and tested with different mesh sizes. Finally, a simulation is carried out using all of these developments, to simulate the problem of erosion induced by the unsteady flow resulting from a dam-break, and the results are compared with an experimental test case. The sediment transport occurs mainly in the form of sheet flow, and a new method of simulating sheet flow has been devised, based on an analogy with dispersion in a fluidized bed. This approach has the advantage over previous models that it does not require any ad-hoc modification of existing sediment transport models. Finally, the complete model is applied to the case of waves impacting on a sea wall, first for horizontal bed case and second for the case of a sloped beach. The hydrodynamic properties of the flow are analyzed for both cases without using the bed deformation module. Then the scour model with movable bed is included in the simulation, for both cases., L'affouillement au pied des digues est l'un des principaux facteurs de l’endommagement structurel des digues, impliqué dans 12% des cas documentés. Pour les applications pratiques, l'affouillement au pied des digues est souvent modélisé avec une approche empirique simple qui a ses limites. Bien que des observations sur le terrain et des travaux expérimentaux soient utiles, il existe des limites dans l'approche. La pertinence des expériences en laboratoire est limitée par des problèmes de similitude et les expériences en vraie grandeur coûtent cher, et ne permettent pas une maîtrise des conditions expérimentales. Les simulations numériques nous offrent une alternative intéressante mais posent aussi quelques défis. La première difficulté est la modélisation correcte de la dynamique de la surface libre, y compris le processus de déferlement de la vague. Le deuxième problème est la modélisation de l’érosion des sédiments du lit, et l’influence de l’évolution du profil du lit sur l’écoulement. La dérive de Stokes dans un canal fermé a été calculée et comparée avec les résultats théoriques et expérimentaux. Il est montré que le modèle surestime la dérive de Stokes près de la surface, parce que la pression à la surface libre n’est pas calculée correctement, et ceci induit une vitesse négative trop importante à l’intérieure du fluide. Quatrièmement, le calcul de la contrainte de cisaillement du lit a été testé avec le cas d’une couche limite oscillatoire. Deux méthodes pour le calcul de la contrainte de cisaillement au lit ont été testées avec différentes résolutions spatiales. Enfin, tous ces éléments ont été testés ensemble, dans la simulation d’une rupture de barrage sur fond mobile, avec comparaison des résultats avec une expérience en laboratoire. Le transport solide est créé principalement par un écoulement de type ‘sheet flow’, et un nouveau modèle est proposé pour la prise en compte de ce phénomène, basé sur la modélisation des lits fluidisés. Cette approche est une adaptation du modèle standard pour le transport des sédiments en suspension, avec l’avantage de ne pas nécessiter un modèle propre au phénomène. Enfin, le modèle est utilisé pour simuler l’impact de la houle sur une digue, avec un lit horizontal et une plage inclinée, sans déformation du lit. Puis l’affouillement et la déformation du lit sont inclus pour les deux cas.

Les rivières forment un système dynamique complexe soumis à des variations de grande ampleur, en effet les précipitations sont jugées comme la cause fondamentale de ces fluctuations. Au cours du temps, la morphologie des rivières évolue sous l’influence de plusieurs paramètres, en particulier les crues, les ouvrages hydrauliques, le transport sédimentaire. Le développement de la végétation dans le lit de la rivière et sur les berges peut affecter les conditions hydrodynamiques et le comportement des cours d'eau, ainsi l'impact de la végétation est une question cruciale pour la gestion des réseaux d'irrigation et des flux naturels. En réduisant la vitesse, la présence de végétation peut augmenter les dépôts de sédiments et modifier le risque d'inondation du fait des effets combinés de l'augmentation de la rugosité et de la diminution de la zone d'écoulement du chenal principal du fleuve. Ces aspects sont mis en avant par l’application de simulations numériques à des cas réels : cas de la Medjerda et du Canal Medjerda Cap Bon en Tunisie. La végétation est une caractéristique commune des eaux côtières et fluviales naturelles, interagissant à la fois avec le débit d'eau et le transport de sédiments. Cependant, les processus physiques qui régissent ces interactions sont encore mal compris, ce qui rend difficile la prévision du transport des sédiments et de la morpho dynamique. L’enjeu de cette thèse est d’améliorer la connaissance des processus physiques régissant les interactions entre végétation, écoulement et transport sédimentaire. Le but final est de pouvoir améliorer la gestion des hydro-systèmes artificiels ou naturels. Ce travail impliquera deux approches complémentaires d’expériences et de modélisation analytique et numérique. Dans un premier temps, on s’attachera à mieux caractériser les processus physiques d’interaction entre végétation et écoulement. Pour cela des expériences sur différents canaux fourniront l’hydrodynamique au-dessus de végétations modèles. On mettra l’accent sur le développement des méthodes expérimentales spécifiques à l’étude de couche limite au-dessus de macro-rugosités. Ces résultats seront dans un second temps analysés à partir de modèles analytiques qui permettent d’avoir les relations hauteur-débits nécessaires pour la gestion. Les caractéristiques et les performances de plusieurs modèles seront évaluées en regard des différents types de végétations. Dans un troisième temps, des expériences avec des sédiments préciseront l’influence de la végétation sur la modification du transport solide. La réduction des contraintes sur les lits engendre une adaptation nécessaire des lois de transport classique. Un modèle d’ajustement de ces lois sera proposé.

The flow and the stability of viscoelastic liquid curtains are investigated using solutions of flexible and semi-rigid polymer chains. These viscoelastic liquids are extruded from a slot at constant flow rate and fall in ambient air under gravity. We show that the curtain flow of polymer solutions is characterized by an initial balance between gravity and the elastic stresses arising from the stretching of polymer molecules, until inertia finally dominates and the classical free-fall behavior is recovered. We show that the flow is mostly influenced by the value of the extensional relaxation time of the solution measured by a filament thinning technique. New insights on the theoretical description of Newtonian curtains allow us to find the master curve of the viscoelastic curtain flow by analogy. Concerning the curtain stability, we show that the critical flow rate for curtain formation is not affected by the presence of polymers whereas the minimum flow rate below which the curtain rapidly breaks is reduced by polymer addition, thus revealing a greater resistance of the sheet to hole initiations. Furthermore, we observe the onset of a flow instability for the most shear-thinning solutions, where thick bands (where the liquid velocity is larger than average) are formed within the curtain. Visualizations of the flow inside the die reveal that this phenomenon is linked to a flow instability at the contraction plane upstream of the slot where the flow is unsteady and three-dimensional in nature; L’écoulement et la stabilité des rideaux liquides viscoélastiques sont étudiés pour des solutions de polymères flexibles et semi rigides. The objective of this thesis is to develop a 3D numerical model to assess debris flow. These viscous flows, heavily loaded with solid matter, form when heavy rain occurs in mountains. Today, forecasts of potentially impacted areas are based on 0D, 1D and 2D numerical tools. However, these tools cannot fully represent the free surface behaviour of debris flows due to the approximations and assumptions on which they are based. Thus, this work utilises a 3D numerical code to study this phenomenon. A specific model is built with real field data. Several flow scenarios are studied and compared with a 2D numerical model. The results highlight the significant benefits of a 3D approach by providing information on the fine representation of flow dynamics over the catchment area. The model also predicts the impact of debris flow (overflowing on a road bridge) and the zones of deposition and spreading. It highlights possible congestion phenomena and reproduces flows in the channels by fully accounting for parietal friction, capabilities not provided by 2D models. Prior to this application, the 3D model was evaluated with five sets of experimental data to validate its ability to represent viscoplastic flows. Different types of flows are studied and are representative of those observed on real sites when debris flow occur.; L’objectif de cette thèse est de développer un modèle numérique 3D afin d’étudier le phénomène de laves torrentielles ; écoulements visqueux fortement chargés en matière solide, surgissant en montagne lors d’orages violents. Aujourd’hui, la prévision des zones de vulnérabilité s’appuie sur des outils de calcul 0D, 1D ou 2D. Or ces outils ne peuvent représenter pleinement le comportement à surface libre des écoulements du fait de nombreuses approximations et hypothèses. Ainsi cette thèse met en œuvre un code numérique 3D pour étudier ces écoulements. Ce travail aboutit à la construction d’un modèle 3D à partir de données réelles de terrain. Plusieurs scénarios ont été étudiés et comparés à des résultats issus d’un modèle 2D. Les résultats mettent en évidence les apports non négligeables de la modélisation 3D : zones d’étalement et de dépôt, phénomènes d’encombrement, modélisation fine des écoulements dans les zones chenalisées. Préalablement, le modèle 3D a été validé en comparant les résultats numériques à des données expérimentales issues de la littérature, pour des typologies d’écoulement représentatives de celles observées sur des sites grandeur nature.

International audience; A part of non-Newtonian fluids are yield stress fluids. They require a minimum stress to flow. Below this minimum value, yield stress fluids remain solid. To date, 1D and 2D numerical models have been used predominantly to study free surface flows. However, some phenomena have three-dimensional behaviour such as the appearance of the limit between the liquid regime and the solid regime. Here the aim is to use a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to reproduce the properties of the free surface flow of yield stress fluids in an open channel. Modelling the behaviour of the yield stress fluid is also expected. The numerical study is driven with the software OpenFOAM. Numerical outcomes are compared with experimental results from model experiment and theorical predictions based on the rheological constitutive law. The 3D model is validated by evaluating its capacity to reproduce reliably flow patterns. The depth, the local velocity and the stress are quantified for different numerical configurations (grid level, rheological parameters). Then numerical results are used to detect the presence of rigid and sheared zones within the flow.; Parmi les fluides non newtoniens, certains ont pour particularité de présenter un minimum énergétique pour entrer en écoulement : on parle alors de fluides à seuil (ex: dentifrice, ketchup, etc.). Ce type de fluides requiert une contrainte minimale pour se mouvoir. En dessous de cette valeur critique, les fluides à seuil présentent un comportement solide rigide. A ce jour, de nombreux travaux de recherche se sont appuyés sur des modèles numériques 1D et 2D pour étudier les écoulements à surface libre de ces fluides. Toutefois, certains phénomènes complexes, tels que l'apparition de l'interface de transition zone rigide/zone liquide des fluides à seuil, présentent un comportement tridimensionnel. Le but de ce travail est d'employer la mécanique des fluides numériques (CFD) pour reproduire les caractéristiques d'un écoulement à surface libre de fluides à seuil dans un canal rectangulaire prismatique, dans lequel un comportement rigide/liquide est attendu. Au delà de la modélisation de l'hydraulique du phénomène, reproduire numériquement la rhéologie du fluide (son comportement mécanique) est un des enjeux de ce travail. Le logiciel OpenFOAM est mis en oeuvre pour les calculs 3D. La représentativité du modèle 3D est évaluée en comparant les résultats obtenus avec des données expérimentales et des modèles analytiques issus de la littérature scientifique. Le champ de vitesse, les hauteurs d'écoulement et le champ de contrainte sont analysés pour différentes configurations de simulation (variabilité des maillages numériques et des hypothèses rhéologiques). Enfin, les résultats 3D sont exploités pour identifier les zones supposées rigides des zones liquides au sein de l'écoulement.

4th International Symposium of Shallow Flows, Eindhoven, NLD, 26-/06/2017 - 28/06/2017; International audience; The paper presents results of experiments conducted in a laboratory flume with a compound cross-section consisting of a central main channel (MC) and two adjacent floodplains (FP). The focus of the study has been on turbulent mixing layers and large-scale coherent structures that form at the interfaces between the MC and two FP at non-uniform flow conditions in the streamwise direction. In the experiments, the streamwise non-uniformity is generated by imposing an imbalance in the discharge distribution between MC and FPs at the flume entrance, keeping the total flow rate (Q = 114 L/s) constant. The experiments started with initially uniform flows (8 L/s in each FP and 98 L/s in MC), which then have been modified by redistribution of the water discharge between MC and FPs. Three unbalanced inflow conditions have been tested, with a FP inflow of 4, 12 and 16 L/s at each FP. The discharge imbalance results in a transverse depth-averaged mean flow (termed herein ‘transverse flow’) from MC to FP or vice versa, quantified by the depth-averaged transverse velocity Uyd. Based on ADV measurements with 1 or 2 side-looking probes, it is shown that transverse currents towards the MC with a velocity ratio Uyd / Uxd higher than 5% can entirely displace the mixing layer, shear-layer turbulence, and coherent structures, shifting them into the MC. It is also found that streamwise uniformity is reached faster with a transverse flow towards the FP than with a transverse flow in the opposite direction.

A depth-averaged model based on the thin-layer assumption, called Saint-Venant (Shallow-Water), is classically used to simulate the propagation and the spreading of debris and mud flows. It is based on several approximations concerning the shape of the velocity profile in non-uniform zones. We propose to test these hypotheses, examining a strongly non-uniform zone, the front of free-surface viscoplastic flows and the velocity field within this zone. By improving our knowledge about the internal dynamics in the front zone, we seek to improve the thin-layer models. This thesis therefore focuses on the study of the internal dynamics within the front of viscoplatic free-surface flows.We used the moving conveyor belt to generate stationary flows. We carried out a technical work on this set-up, and specific analysis of images obtained from the high-speed camera, in order to be able to measure velocity fields with a high resolution. The study of a Newtonian fluid was also carried out in order to validate the lubrication model and the experimental device.We compared experimental results to theoretical solutions of two thin-layer models taking into account the Herschel-Bulkley rheology: the classical model of lubrication, which is at the base of Saint-Venant model, and a consistent first-order model specifically developed in this thesis.The first-order model is equal to the zero-order model (lubrication), plus corrective terms derived from the normal stresses and inertia terms.In this study, for the purpose of comparison with our experimental results, we are interested in travelling-wave solutions. We are able to solve the shape of the front without using a depth-averaged model.Far from the front, experimental velocity profiles clearly display the characteristic 2-layer structure predicted by the lubrication solution, with constant values close to the free-surface (plug) and a sheared layer underneath. Closer to surge tip, the shape of experimental longitudinal velocity profilesthen begins to differ from the theoretical prediction. The 2-layer structure tends to disappear, and the profiles display shear across the whole depth ofthe flow. In this tip region, surface velocity also appears to increase faster than its theoretical counterpart. Surface velocity predicted by the first-order model increase more drastically in the tip region, in better agreement with the measurements than the lubrication model. The first-order model predicts a sheared velocity profile when approaching the front, as observed experimentally.The consistent first-order model then provides better predictions about internal dynamics than lubrication model. A depth-integrated model like Saint-Venant, based on consistent first-order developments is then calculated, as a first step before being integrated into an operational simulation tool.; Le modèle de couche mince intégré sur l'épaisseur, Saint-Venant, utilisé classiquement pour simuler la propagation de laves torrentielles et coulées boueuses, repose sur plusieurs approximations concernant la forme des profils de vitesse en zones non-uniformes. Il est pourtant nécessaire d'utiliser ce type de modélisation, comme outil d'aide à la gestion des risques liés aux laves torrentielles. Nous proposons d'éprouver ses hypothèses, en observant une zone fortement non-uniforme, le front de coulées à surface libre et le champ de vitesse à l'intérieur de cette zone.En améliorant notre connaissance de l'évolution de la forme des profils de vitesse (de la dynamique interne) au front de coulées, nous cherchons à améliorer les modèles de couche mince. Cette thèse porte donc sur l'étude de la dynamique interne au front d'écoulements à surface libre de fluides newtoniens et viscoplastiques.Nous avons utilisé le dispositif du canal à fond mobile qui permet de générer des coulées stationnaires dans le référentiel de l'observateur au moyen d'un fond mobile remontant vers l'amont. Nous avons réalisé un travail technique sur ce canal et sur l'analyse des images pour pouvoir mesurer les champs de vitesse à haute résolution spatiale aux fronts de coulées à surface libre de fluides viscoplastiques. L'étude des fluides newtoniens a aussi été réalisée afin de valider les modèles et éprouver le dispositif expérimental.Nous avons comparé les résultats expérimentaux aux solutions théoriques de deux modèles de couche mince adaptés à la rhéologie de Herschel-Bulkley : le modèle classique de la lubrification, à la base du modèle de Saint-Venant et un modèle consistant à l'ordre 1 développé dans cette thèse. Le modèle consistant d'ordre 1 est la somme du modèle à l'ordre 0 (la lubrification) et de termes correctifs qui proviennent des contraintes normales et des termes d'inertie. Dans le cadre de notre configuration du fond mobile remontant vers l'amont, il est possible de déduire la forme du front en cherchant une solution de type onde progressive, sans passer par un modèle intégré dans l'épaisseur.Pour les fluides viscoplastiques, la structure classique du profil de vitesse, avec une zone cisaillée surmontée d'un plug non cisaillé est bien reconnaissable sur nos profils de vitesse en zone uniforme, et en zone faiblement variée. Mais à l'approche du front, cependant, la vitesse de surface augmente, les profils de vitesse expérimentaux deviennent cisaillés sur toute l'épaisseur, conduisant à la disparition du plug à proximité de la ligne de front.Le modèle de lubrification prédit l’existence d'un plug dans le front jusqu'à la ligne de contact, ce qui n'est pas observé expérimentalement. La vitesse de surface du modèle de lubrification augmente à l'approche du front, mais est largement sous-estimée par rapport à la vitesse de surface mesurée. Les vitesses de surface prédites par le modèle d'ordre 1 augmentent plus drastiquement au front, en meilleur accord avec les mesures que le modèle de lubrification. Pour certaines configurations expérimentales l'accord est même très bon. Remarquablement, le cisaillement des profils de vitesse à l'approche du front, observé expérimentalement, est aussi prédit par le modèle d'ordre 1.Les profils de vitesse présentent donc une évolution au front de coulées viscoplastiques en contradiction avec les hypothèses du modèle de Saint-Venant. Le modèle consistant d'ordre 1 permet d'améliorer les prédictions. Un modèle intégré dans l'épaisseur de type Saint-Venant basé sur les développements consistants d'ordre 1 est alors calculé, car il constitue l'étape nécessaire avant d'être intégré dans un outil de simulation opérationnel.

International audience; Open channel flows subjected to a longitudinal transition in roughness, from bed friction to emergent cylinder drag and vice versa, are investigated experimentally in an 18 m long laboratory flume. These are compared to uniform flows subject to (1) bed roughness only and (2) an array of emergent vertical cylinders installed on bed roughness. The nearbed region is investigated in detail for uniform flows through the cylinder array. The water column can be divided into two parts: a region of constant velocity and a boundary layer near the channel bed. In the latter region, a local increase in velocity, or velocity bulge, is observed in line of a cylinder row. The velocity bulge may be related to the disorganization of the von Kármán vortex street by the bed-induced turbulence, resulting in reduced momentum loss in the cylinder wake. The boundary layer height is found to be independent of water depth and bed roughness (smooth or rough bottom). Strong oscillations of the free surface (seiching) are observed. Oscillation amplitude is dependent on the longitudinal position within the cylinder array and is found to decrease with decreasing array length. When water depth/boundary layer height ratio is close to unity, the disorganization of the von Kármán vortex street throughout the water column prevents seiching from occurring. In the case of roughness transition flows, the water depth is found to vary only upstream of the change in roughness. Vertical profiles of velocity and turbulence are self-similar upstream of the transition and collapse with the uniform flow profiles. Downstream of the roughness change, velocity and turbulence vary over a distance of 35 to 50 times the water depth. Roughness transition flows show that seiching is lowered by flow non-uniformity. A 1D momentum equation integrating bed friction and drag force exerted by the cylinder array predicts accurately the water surface profile (0.9% mean relative error). The computed profiles show that, upstream of the transition, flow depth varies over a distance of about 2600 times the uniform water depth of the upstream roughness. The 1D equation is solved analytically for zero bed friction.

This review paper investigates the determinants of modelling choices, for numerous applications of 1-D free-surface flow and morphodynamic equations in hydrology and hydraulics, across multiple spatiotemporal scales. We aim to characterize each case study by its signature composed of model refinement (Navier–Stokes: NS; Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes: RANS; Saint-Venant: SV; or approximations to Saint-Venant: ASV), spatiotemporal scales and subscales (domain length: L from 1 cm to 1000 km; temporal scale: T from 1 s to 1 year; flow depth: H from 1 mm to 10 m; spatial step for modelling: δL; temporal step: δT), flow typology (Overland: O; High gradient: Hg; Bedforms: B; Fluvial: F), and dimensionless numbers (dimensionless time period T*, Reynolds number Re, Froude number Fr, slope S, inundation ratio Λz, Shields number θ). The determinants of modelling choices are therefore sought in the interplay between flow characteristics and cross-scale and scale-independent views. The influence of spatiotemporal scales on modelling choices is first quantified through the expected correlation between increasing scales and decreasing model refinements (though modelling objectives also show through the chosen spatial and temporal subscales). Then flow typology appears a secondary but important determinant in the choice of model refinement. This finding is confirmed by the discriminating values of several dimensionless numbers, which prove preferential associations between model refinements and flow typologies. This review is intended to help modellers in positioning their choices with respect to the most frequent practices, within a generic, normative procedure possibly enriched by the community for a larger, comprehensive and updated image of modelling strategies.

A laminar boundary layer developing under a free-surface and interacting with an emerging obstacle lead to the creation of a complex recirculation zone called horseshoe vortex upstream from the obstacle. This recirculation zone is composed of a given number of vortices wrapping around the obstacle with various kind of dynamics. The aim of this work is to perform an experimental parametric study of the laminar, and slightly turbulent horseshoe vortex. Measurements are obtained by PIV and trajectographies and detection method based on modal decomposition (POD) and critical points are used to ease the study of the vortex dynamics. This manuscript intends to : (i) Explain the horseshoe vortex main characteristics evolution with the non-dimensional parameters of the flow. (ii) Define a typology of the different observed vortex dynamics. (iii) Identify the physical mechanisms at the origin of those dynamics through the use of a conceptual model. (iv) And finally, show the influence of the obstacle length on the horseshoe vortex., La rencontre entre une couche limite laminaire se développant sur une plaque plane sous une surface libre et un obstacle rectangulaire émergent mène à l’apparition d’une zone de recirculation complexe appelée tourbillon en fer à cheval à l’amont de l’obstacle. Cette zone de recirculation est composée d’un certain nombre de vortex s’enroulant autour de l’obstacle et pouvant présenter des dynamiques variées. Le but de ce travail est de réaliser une étude expérimentale paramétrique du tourbillon en fer à cheval laminaire et faiblement turbulent. Les mesures sont réalisées par PIV et par trajectographies et des méthodes de détection basés sur la décomposition modale (POD) et la détection des points critiques sont utilisées afin de faciliter l’étude de la dynamique tourbillonnaire. Ce manuscrit se propose de : (i) Déterminer l’évolution des caractéristiques du tourbillon en fer à cheval en fonction des paramètres adimensionnels de l’écoulement. (ii) Mettre en place une typologie des différentes dynamiques exhibées. (iii) Déterminer les mécanismes à l’origine de l’apparition de ces différentes dynamiques à l’aide d’un modèle conceptuel. (iv) Et finalement, étudier l’influence de la longueur de l’obstacle sur le tourbillon en fer à cheval.

River hydrographs generally exhibit intense flood events during which the discharge increases quickly during rainfall, and decreases slowly afterwards. In this manuscript, we show that the dynamics of groundwater in an unconfined aquifer can account for these features.In the frame of the Dupuit-Boussinesq (shallow-water) approximation, the discharge increase rate $\dot{Q}$ is a non-linear function of the rainfall rate $R$: $\dot{Q} \propto R^{3/2}$. After the rain, two consecutive asymptotic regimes compose the drought flow. During the early drought flow, the discharge decreases as the inverse square root of time ($Q \sim 1/ \sqrt{t}$ (Polubarinova-Kochina (1962)). Later, the discharge decreases as the inverse square of time ($Q \sim 1/t^2$ (Boussinesq, 1903)).A laboratory aquifer (homogeneous and bidimensional) submitted to artificial rainfall confirms the existence of these asymptotic regimes. This simplified experimental setup generates a realistic flood signal, in the absence of surface runoff.Field observation in the catchment of the Quiock Creek, Guadeloupe reveals a similar behaviour. River hydrographs generally exhibit intense flood events during which the discharge increases quickly during rainfall, and decreases slowly afterwards. In this manuscript, we show that the dynamics of groundwater in an unconfined aquifer can account for these features.In the frame of the Dupuit-Boussinesq (shallow-water) approximation, the discharge increase rate $\dot{Q}$ is a non-linear function of the rainfall rate $R$: $\dot{Q} \propto R^{3/2}$. After the rain, two consecutive asymptotic regimes compose the drought flow. During the early drought flow, the discharge decreases as the inverse square root of time ($Q \sim 1/ \sqrt{t}$ (Polubarinova-Kochina (1962)). Later, the discharge decreases as the inverse square of time ($Q \sim 1/t^2$ (Boussinesq, 1903)).A laboratory aquifer (homogeneous and bidimensional) submitted to artificial rainfall confirms the existence of these asymptotic regimes. This simplified experimental setup generates a realistic flood signal, in the absence of surface runoff.Field observation in the catchment of the Quiock Creek, Guadeloupe reveals a similar behaviour. 36th IAHR World Congress, La Haye, NLD, 28-/06/2015 - 03/07/2015; International audience; Mixing layers associated with uniform and gradually varied flows (GVF) in compound channel are experimentally investigated in two flumes, featuring a rectangular or a trapezoidal main channel (MC). These shear layers are compared with free mixing layers. Starting with uniform flow, the GVF are generated by an imbalance in the upstream discharge distribution between the floodplain (FP) and the MC. The GVF are longitudinally evolving under the influence of four external forcings: (i) a two-stage geometry, (ii) a varying vertical flow confinement (quantified by the relative flow depth, Dr = hf / hm, where hf and hm are the flow depths in the FP and MC); (iii) a variable lateral depth-averaged mean flow; (iv) a variable velocity ratio, l = Us/(2Uc), where Us = Ud2-Ud1 is the velocity difference, Uc = 0.5(Ud1+Ud2) is the mean velocity across the mixing layer, Ud1 and Ud2 are the depth-averaged velocities outside the mixing layer in the FP and MC, respectively. In the case of weakly or moderately sheared flows (l < 0.3 - 0.35), the peak values of scaled depth averaged Reynolds-stress, denoted Max (gd), are independent of l, but increase with a decrease in flow confinement, to reach the maximum values observed for free mixing layers. In the case of highly sheared flows (l > 0.3 - 0.35), the values of Max (gd) become independent of the flow confinement as l increases, reaching values that can be greater than the ones observed for free mixing layers. Despite the flow confinement, the high values of l trigger the development of 2D large coherent structures without interaction with the 3D bed-induced turbulence. Lastly, with nearly constant values of l and Dr, it was found that the scaled shear-layer turbulence was mainly dictated by the lateral flow. For both uniform flows and test cases with a lateral flow to the FP, the Rayleigh's inflection point criterion is fulfilled. This gives rise to large 2D structures and high values of Max (gd). By contrast, for test cases with a significant lateral flow to the MC, the convex velocity profiles without inflection-point are associated with low levels of Max (gd). Lastly, the trapezoidal MC was found to enhance the turbulent exchange compared with the rectangular one.

36th IAHR World Congress, La Haye, NLD, 28-/06/2015 - 03/07/2015; International audience; The understanding of vegetated flows is of primary importance since a new trend in river management consists in restoring rivers and floodplains to their natural form. The present laboratory study focuses on the particular case of a floodplain with a longitudinal roughness step change from highly-submerged dense meadow to emergent rigid stems set on the dense meadow (representing a wood), and vice versa. First, it was found that the flow depth solely varies upstream from the roughness change (but the flume is too short to observe the uniform flow depth at the upstream end of the flume). In this region, the vertical profiles of mean velocity, Reynolds stress and turbulent intensities are self-similar, when the mean streamwise velocity is normalized by the bulk velocity and the turbulent quantities by the shear velocity. Downstream from the roughness step change, the mean flow and turbulent quantities are spatially evolving over longitudinal distances that are about 35 to 50 times the water depth. Second, a simple 1D model is found to accurately predict the longitudinal profile of water depth through the two types of roughness transitions (from meadow to rigid stems and vice versa). Bed-roughness is modelled by Manning's formula and the drag caused by the stems is modelled by a volume force with constant drag coefficient and constant frontal surface per unit area. Results of this model show that the convergence length upstream of the roughness step change, that is necessary to reach the uniform water depth of the upstream roughness, scales with the uniform water depth of the upstream roughness Hup and can be estimated in the present case as 2000 Hup.

The objective of this study is to evaluate the influence of soil hydrodynamic characteristics variability on surface and subsurface flows at a vegetative buffer strip scale, using mechanist modeling. Cathy (CATchment HYdrology, Camporese et al. 2010) is a research partial-differential-equation-based model, solving Richards equation in 3 dimensions for water fluxes in the soil, and a simplified scheme of Navier-Stokes equation for surface runoff. Its particularity is to handle interactions between surface and subsurface, which is a key point concerning water but also solute transport in vegetative filter strips. Balance between runoff and infiltration, flow pathways, water content, are very sensitive to hydrodynamic characteristics, especially saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ksat). This soil property is very difficult to measure and to describe at a fine scale, since it is highly variable spatially in the 3 dimensions. Models described by PDE such as Richards equation need a value of Ksat at each soil layer and each node, though simpler conceptual modeling run with average values of larger cells or storages, using some 'representative Ksat' at a larger scale. This kind of models however can simulate with high quality the processes despite the simplifications they make on parametrization. Using a mechanist and physically-based modeling, we evaluate the influence of Ksat high spatial variability on fluxes, by comparison with observations from an experimental vegetative filter strip. It should allow to understand until which degree of simplification one can describe hydrodynamic characteristics in modeling for more conceptual models.

/ Ce mémoire d'HDR présente une synthèse de mes travaux et résultats ayant trait, au sens large, à la modélisation des écoulements à surface libre de fluides complexes. Je m'intéresse essentiellement au cas de coulées gravitaires de fluides à seuil, qui peuvent représenter génériquement des laves torrentielles, des coulées de boue ou certains types d'avalanches de neige. Je discute les différentes approches permettant de modéliser la propagation de ces écoulements, et présente les études que nous avons initiées pour tester et évaluer la pertinence de ces modèles.

Summary When simulating urban floods, most approaches have to simplify the topography of the city and cannot afford to include the obstacles located in the streets such as bus stops, trees and parked cars. The aim of the present paper is to investigate the error made when neglecting such singularities in a simple flooded 3-branch crossroad configuration with a specific concern regarding the error in discharge distribution to the downstream streets. Experimentally, the discharge distribution for 14 flows in which nine obstacles occupying 1/6 of the flow section are introduced one after the other is measured using electromagnetic flow-meters. The velocity field for one given flow is obtained using horizontal-PIV. Additionally, all these flows are computed using a CFD methodology. It appears that the modification in discharge distribution is mostly related to the location of the obstacles with regards to the intersection, the location of the separating interface and is strongly impacted by the Froude number of the inflow while the influence of the normalized water depth remains very limited. Overall, the change in discharge distribution induced by the obstacles remains lower than 15% of the inflow discharge even for high Froude number flows.

International audience; This experimental study assesses the effect of non-uniformity of flow on the momentum flux in straight compound channels. Two flumes were used, featuring vertical and sloping banks. Starting with uniform flow condition, various imbalances in the upstream discharge distribution were introduced. This resulted in a time-averaged lateral flow and an advective transport of momentum, which interacted with the shear-layer turbulence generated by the compound geometry. To investigate this interaction, the three contributions to transverse momentum flux (depth-averaged flow, shear-layer turbulence and dispersive term of spanwise velocity) are assessed. The first two contributions were strengthened by the sloping banks, while the third becomes important for the case of the vertical bank. With a lateral flow towards the main channel, the first contribution rises at the expense of the second. With a lateral flow towards the floodplain, the first two contributions have the same order of magnitude, and the Boussinesq approach is invalidated

Reactive rotational molding is a process to manufacture hollow plastic parts where synthesis occurs during the shaping. This method has several advantages compared to traditional rotomolding using thermoplastic powders: shorter cycle time, possible use of high performance materials, and decrease of energy consumption and raw materials costs. However reactive rotational molding is more complex to implement mainly because of the important and quick change of viscosity occurring during polymerization. One of the solutions to optimize this process is to simulate the reactive system flow during processing.In this work we used thermoset polyurethane as reactive system. Thanks to thermal and rheological analysis, gelation and vitrification phenomena were studied and Time-Temperature-Transformation diagram was established. Material chemiorheological behavior was also modeled.The process has been simulated using a solver based on Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) method. This solver was developed in our research team and several improvements have been added during this study. To be able to simulate realistic flows with a high number of particles, the first improvement was to accelerate the resolution of calculations. Then the change of viscosity has been taken into account using a chemiorheological model and a new boundary condition was developed to simulate adhesion of polymer on the mold wall. To be able to simulate 3D flows, the needed modifications have been also added to the SPH solver., Le rotomoulage réactif est un procédé de fabrication de pièces creuses en polymère où la synthèse du matériau intervient pendant la mise en œuvre. Cette méthode présente plusieurs avantages comparée à la méthode traditionnelle utilisant des poudres thermoplastiques : réduction du temps de cycle, utilisation possible de matériaux techniques, et baisse de la consommation d'énergie et du coût des matières premières. Cependant le rotomoulage réactif est plus complexe à mettre en œuvre car la polymérisation provoque un changement important et rapide de la viscosité. Une des solutions pour optimiser ce procédé est de simuler l'écoulement du système réactif pendant la mise en œuvre.Pour ce travail nous avons utilisé un polyuréthane thermodurcissable. Des analyses thermiques et rhéologiques ont permis d'étudier les phénomènes de gélification et de vitrification du matériau et le diagramme Temps-Température-Transformation a été établi. Le comportement rhéocinétique du système a également été modélisé.Le procédé a été simulé en utilisant un code de calcul basé sur la méthode « Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics » (SPH). Ce code a été développé par notre équipe et plusieurs améliorations ont été apportées au cours de cette étude. Pour effectuer des simulations plus réalistes en utilisant un plus grand nombre de particules, la première amélioration a consisté à accélérer la résolution des calculs. Ensuite l'évolution de la viscosité a été prise en compte grâce à l'utilisation d'un modèle rhéocinétique et une nouvelle condition limite a été développée pour simuler l'adhésion du polymère sur la paroi du moule. Les modifications nécessaires à la simulation d'écoulements 3D ont également été apportées au code SPH.

Ce travail porte sur la description d’un modèle RSM en vue de la modélisation 3D des écoulements turbulents en canal rectangulaire à surface libre. Nous avons utilisé la méthode des volumes finis pour résoudre les équations de transport non linéaire régissant les équations de quantité de mouvement, d’énergie cinétique et de dissipation. Nous avons comparé les résultats des simulations obtenus à des résultats expérimentaux de Jau Yau Lu pour un écoulement sur fond lisse et Chouaib Labiod pour un écoulement sur fond de rugosité homogène. Nous avons mis ainsi en évidence l’influence de la pente, la rugosité et la lame d’eau sur les profils verticaux de la vitesse moyenne d’écoulement et les courants secondaires du champ moyen à travers une section transversale et leur sensibilité aux parois et à la surface libre. Ils ne peuvent être modélisés qu’en tenant compte de l’anisotropie de la turbulence. D’où l’intérêt d’un modèle complet comme le RSM. Notons ici que nous avons utilisé le code de calcul FLUENT 6.3 pour faire notre calcul.

For this purpose, we first show that the Kinect is likely to capture temporal sequences of depth observations of wave-like surfaces with wavelengths and amplitudes sufficiently small to characterise medium/large scale flows. Then, we illustrate the ability of a stochastic data assimilation method to estimate both time-dynamic water surface elevations and velocities from sequences of synthetical depth images having characteristics close to the Kinect ones.

This thesis presents an experimental study dedicated to characterise the hydraulic propertiesof free surface flows of complex fluids : viscoplastic fluids and mixtures made of viscoplasticfluids and grains. This study is motivated by the need to improve knowledge on properties ofthe flow of debris flows in a context of protection against natural hazards in the mountains.We have developed an original laboratory device - a channel with a mobile bottom - togenerate gravitary flows that are globally stationary in the laboratory frame. The flows have avery steep front followed upstream by a zone of uniform thickness. Viscoplastic fluids used(carbopol and kaolin) were selected so to model the matrix of natural mud flows, taking intoaccount the criteria of similarity adapted. These fluids follow a behavior law of Herschel-Bulkley, and their rheological properties were determined using a laboratory rheometer byproviding a particular care to the establishment of the associated uncertainties. We presentaccurate measurements of the evolution of the thickness of the flow in the uniform zone withthe the velocity speed of channel belt. These results are compared with theoretical predictionscorresponding to a steady uniform flow of a fluid of Herschel-Bulkley, and we show that theagreement is satisfactory through the uncertainties on the rheological measurements. We alsoanalyzed the shape of front, and here too, the agreement with hydraulic models (models likeSaint-Venant) is good. Both of the studies allowed to validate the hydraulic predictionsobtained from behavior laws measured with the rheometer. Finally, in a last section, wepresent a Preliminary study about the dynamics of isolated rigid particles placed in the flow,by paying attention to longitudinal velocities and falling velocities for different particle sizesand densities., Cette thèse présente une étude expérimentale visant à caractériser les propriétés hydrauliquesd'écoulements à surface libre de fluides complexes: fluides viscoplastiques et mélangesfluides viscoplastiques-grains. Ce travail est motivé par la nécessité d'améliorer lesconnaissances sur les propriétés des écoulements de laves torrentielles, dans un contexte deprotection contre les risques naturels en montagne. Nous avons développé un dispositif delaboratoire original, un canal à fond mobile, permettant de générer des coulées gravitaires quisont globalement stationnaires dans le référentiel du laboratoire. Les coulées présentent unfront très raide, suivi à l'amont d'une zone d'épaisseur uniforme. Les fluides viscoplastiquesutilisés (carbopol et kaolin) ont été choisis de manière à modéliser la matrice des couléesboueuses naturelles en prenant en compte les critères de similitude adaptés. Ces fluidessuivent une loi de comportement de Herschel-Bulkley, et leurs propriétés rhéologiques ont étédéterminées au moyen d'un rhéomètre de laboratoire en accordant un soin particulier àl'établissement des incertitudes associées. Nous présentons des mesures précises de l'évolutionde l'épaisseur des coulées dans la zone uniforme en fonction de la vitesse du fond du canal etde la pente. Ces résultats sont comparés à des prédictions théoriques correspondant à unécoulement permanent et uniforme d'un fluide de Herschel-Bulkley, et nous montrons quel'accord est satisfaisant moyennant les incertitudes sur les mesures rhéologiques. Nous avonségalement analysé la forme du front des coulées et, là-aussi, l'accord avec des modèleshydrauliques (modèles de type Saint-Venant) est bon. Ces deux études permettent de validerles prédictions hydrauliques obtenues à partir de lois de comportement mesurées aurhéomètre. Enfin, dans une dernière partie, nous présentons une étude préliminaire de ladynamique de particules rigides isolées placées au sein de la coulée, en nous intéressant auxvitesses longitudinales et aux vitesses de chute pour différentes tailles et différentes densitésde particules.

International audience; En utilisant des mesures en laboratoire sur des lits composés où la largeur du lit majeur varie, un calage du coefficient de frottement du lit majeur nfp utilisé dans des modélisations 1D a été effectué. Le calage direct sur le cas modélisé donne des valeurs de nfp très variables (1 à 5 environ pour un modèle donné) et ne permet souvent pas de donner à la fois une ligne d'eau et une répartition de débit acceptables. Si le calage est uniquement effectué sur un écoulement faiblement débordant, l'erreur résiduelle pour cet écoulement et pour les écoulements plus largement débordants dans la même géométrie peut dépasser 30%. Les modèles incluant une prise en compte de la turbulence à l'interface permettent d'obtenir une amélioration des performances dans certains cas mais restent insuffisants pour décrire l'ensemble des processus prédominants et, en particulier, le transfert de masse entre lits. / Using laboratory measurements of compound channels in which the flood plain width varies, the friction coefficient of the flood plain nfp used in 1-D modelling is calibrated. The direct calibration for the modelled case provides very varied values for nfp (about 1 to 5 for one given model) and often does not permit to obtain both convenient water level and flow distribution. If nfp is only calibrated on a slightly overbank flow, the error after calibration for the calibrated case and the cases with higher water depth in the same geometry can go beyond 30%. The models taking into account the turbulence at the interface between main channel and flood plain provide better results in some cases but cannot describe all the main processes and, particularly, the mass transfer between beds.

International audience; The present study investigates flow in an asymmetrical compound channel with a thin obstacle set on the floodplain, perpendicular to the main flow direction. Six flow configurations were investigated. Two flows were carried out under uniform flow conditions and four flows were carried out with a thin obstacle of variable length (d). Depending on the investigated relative depths (Hr) and aspect ratios d/Bfp (where Bfp = floodplain width), depth-averaged velocity and distribution of water depth across the channel were first examined. Streamwise profile of discharge distribution and mass exchanges were then deduced. Using a one dimensional momentum equation in each subsection, momentum balances were finally worked out. In addition to the classical turbulent exchange located at the vertical interface between the main channel and the floodplain, a significant momentum flux related to mass exchanges between subsections was observed when flow occurred near the groyne. In the floodplain, analysis emphasizes that the momentum transfer due to mass exchanges is (1) several orders of magnitude larger than momentum transfer due to turbulent exchange and (2) have the same magnitude order as friction on solid walls, whatever the groyne length and the relative depth are. In the main channel, solid wall friction is equivalent or larger than momentum transfers.

This paper investigates 1D-modelling of non-uniform flows in compound channels. The issue is how to accurately predict both flow depth and mean velocity in the floodplain. A new model, called Independent Sub-sections Method (ISM), is presented here. Unlike classical 1D models that solve a dynamic equation on the total cross-section, the ISM estimates the water surface profile within each sub-section. This enables the water level and the sub-section mean velocities to be simultaneously calculated, without priority to any variable. In opposition to the DCM, corrected DCM or the EDM, the ISM assumes independent evolution of the discharge in each sub-section of the compound channel. Indeed, this method does not assume equal head loss gradients in all sub-sections, and it does not impose the downstream discharge distribution. The ISM consists in a set of three coupled 1D momentum equations (written within main channel, left-hand and right-hand floodplains) and a mass conservation equation on the total cross-section. Mass and momentum exchanges at the interfaces between sub-sections are explicitly accounted for. This method is validated against experimental data for: developing flows in straight compound channel, flows in skewed compound channel, in a symmetric converging or diverging compound channel, and in an asymmetrical compound channel with an abrupt floodplain contraction. For the 46 runs, the ISM predicts flow depth and mean velocity in the floodplain with a maximum relative error of 8% and 19% respectively. The ISM also appears to be a useful theoretical tool to improve our understanding of physical processes governing compound channel flows.

[Departement_IRSTEA]RE [TR1_IRSTEA]GES / TRANSCAN; This article presents a method to estimate flow variables for an open channel network governed by first-order, linear hyperbolic partial differential equations and subject to periodic forcing. The selected external boundary conditions of the system are defined as the model input; the flow properties at internal locations, as well as the other external boundary conditions, are defined as the output. A spatially-dependent transfer matrix in the frequency domain is constructed to relate the model input and output. A data reconciliation technique efficiently eliminates the error in the measured data and results in a reconciliated external boundary conditions; subsequently, the flow properties at any location in the system can be accurately evaluated. The applicability and effectiveness of the method is substantiated with a case study of the river flow subject to tidal forcing in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta, California. It is shown that the proposed method gives an accurate estimation of the flow properties at any intermediate location within the channel network.

International audience; In France, the national stream flow measurement network is ruled by the Ministry of Environment through Regional Environment Agencies (DIREN) and Flood Forecast Services (SPC/SCHAPI). Other organizations such as hydropower producers (EDF, CNR), the waterways office (VNF), research institutes (e.g. IRD in Brazil and Africa) also produce hydrometric data. The main gauging techniques are the velocity-area method (currentmeters), Doppler profilers (aDcp) and chemical dilution. Some efforts are needed to improve and quantify the quality of discharge measurements, and also to diversify the range of measuring techniques available to practitioners. In close connection with hydrometry services, research projects are being conducted on conventional and innovating instruments and techniques for flow measurement. In particular, the following issues are currently investigated: rating curves assessment and extension, uncertainties associated with various gauging methods (especially aDcp), evaluation of horizontal Doppler profilers (H-aDcp), video-based flash-flood monitoring (LSPIV).

Mudflows are catastrophic events that cause immense damage to infrastructure and life every year. Local authorities have been trying to mitigate the risk by zoning regulations as well as by building protection structures for many years. These measures have, however, in most cases been designed based on knowledge from past events. Numerical models have started emerging about 30 years ago. While a variety of depth-averaged models are available and implemented in commercial software almost no continuum models exist, that would allow the extraction of forces acting on buildings and protection structures. Moreover, no two-phase material models exist that allow the simulation of the complete process of initiation, propagation and stopping of a flow. This work attempts to fill in an important part of this gap. First, the basic components of the model are developed for free-surface flow of a single phase fluid. On this formulation we investigate a meshless method, and come to the conclusion that the main advantages of the meshless method can be obtained by using simple finite elements in conjunction with a re-meshing strategy. We show that the method retains optimal order of convergence. The two-phase model proposed subsequently formulates the equations of the flow of a two-phase mixture in a moving reference frame. The problem of updating the positions of the nodes of two phases is solved by re-creating a new mesh after each update. The nodal variables are mapped onto this new mesh by linear interpolation. The computation of volume fractions of the two phases is de-coupled from the computation of the main nodal variables, the phase velocities and the pressure. The volume fractions are computed by evaluating the change of local density of nodal masses of the phases. On a series of test problems we demonstrate the performance of the two-phase formulation. We show in particular that sedimentation of a solid phase within a mixture can be simulated and the results can be verified with an analytical solution. Finally, the impact of a mudflow on an obstacle is simulated and a time history of the force acting on the obstacle is extracted. The test problems illustrate the versatility of the method for simulating a wide variety of problems of two-phase flow.

[Departement_IRSTEA]RE [TR1_IRSTEA]GES / TRANSCAN; Open channel flow is traditionally described by hyperbolic conservation laws (the Saint-Venant equations), that can be controlled using boundary conditions. For horizontal frictionless channels, a classical approach consists in using the characteristic form to diagonalize the equations, using socalled Riemann invariants. This elegant approach is much more difficult to apply when friction and slope are not zero, i.e. in the vast majority of cases. On the other hand, a Laplace based method enables to diagonalize the system with nonzero slope and friction, but in the frequency domain. This paper enlightens a link between both methods, showing that the frequency domain method can be considered as an extension of the Riemman invariants form for channels with non zero slope and friction. As an application, we derive explicit expressions for the boundary controls solving the motion planning problem.

This Ph.D research work is about the rheo-kinetics study of two epoxy/amine systems ( DGEBA/DETDA and DGEBA/IPD) for reactive rotational molding (RRM). The kinetic parameters of the auto-catlytic and non catalytic crosslinking was established using inverse method of the in situ isothermal crosslinking by Near Infrared Spectroscopy (NIR). The dierence of the rheokinetic behavior and the viscosity variation between two systems was explained by the dierence of reactivity of the amine hardener and especially the substitution eect (the reactivity of secondary amine is less than the one of the primary amine groups). A new method of substitution eect was established by using the conversion ratio of epoxy and primary amine groups as measured by NIR. Time-Temperature-Transformation diagram was established after studying the vitrication and gelation by thermal and rheological analysis. The "rotomouldability" of both systems was estimated by adding the iso-viscosity curves on TTT diagrams. The free surface ow during rotational molding was modeled by the uid ow inside a horizontal rotating cylinder. The meshless and lagrangian Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) method was applied to simulate the ow by using an adapted viscosity expression., Cette thèse porte sur l'étude rhéocinétique de deux systèmes époxy/amine, DGEBA/DETDA et DGEBA/IPD pour le rotomoulage réactif. Les paramètres cinétiques du mécanisme auto-catalytique et non catalytique de la réticulation isotherme ont été identifiés par une méthode inverse à l'aide des résultats du suivi cinétique par spectroscopie proche infra rouge (PIR). La différence du comportement rhéocinétique entre les deux systèmes est attribuée à la différence de réactivité intrinsèque des groupes amines mis en jeu et l'importance de l'effet de substitution (réactivité des amines primaires par rapport aux amines secondaire) des deux durcisseurs. Une nouvelle méthode de détermination de l'effet de substitution a été établie, en utilisant les taux de conversion de l'époxy et de l'amine primaire mesurées par PIR. L'analyse des phénomènes de vitrification et gélification des deux systèmes a permis d'établir le diagramme Temps-Température-Transformation (TTT). La comparaison de la rotomoulabilité des deux systèmes a été effectuée par l'ajout des courbes d'iso-viscosité sur le diagramme TTT. L'écoulement au cours du rotomoulage a été modélisé par un écoulement à surface libre sous gravité d'un fluide réactif à l'intérieure d'un cylindre horizontal en rotation autour de son axe principal. Dans le cas des fluides de viscosité faible, la méthode lagrangienne de Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics SPH, a été appliquée en utilisant une expression adaptée de la viscosité.
