Ukraine is currently facing enormous humanitarian challenges as a result of the ongoing aggression of the Russian government and its military and financial establishment. This article discusses essential aspects of the societal impacts of this aggression. Our attention is focused on the recovery of the socioeconomic and financial sphere and of human potential. Emphasis is placed on the expediency of Ukraine's implementation of a social quality-based management approach after the end of the war. This may help politicians and citizens to rethink and reconstruct Ukrainian society on the basis of socioeconomic security, social cohesion, social inclusion, and guaranteed societal opportunities, rooted in the societal values of equality and solidarity, social justice, human dignity, and eco- equilibrium. We argue that introducing the concept of social quality, adapted to domestic conditions, into the public administration system of postwar Ukraine would contribute to rethinking the 'social contract' so as to gradually find a reasonable balance between two priorities: the simultaneous increase of efforts to systematically eliminate the threats of external aggression and the accelerated restoration of the national socioeconomic space on principles of sustainable, inclusive development. We show that armed conflict in Uganda affects civic participation, measured by the frequency of political discussion and local meeting attendance. Relying on four rounds of nationally representative individual-level data on civic participation bracketing a large number of battle events, we find that civic participation increases in districts in which battle events took place. Evidence from a variety of identification strategies, including difference-in-difference and IV estimates, suggest that the relationship is causal. A sample of 561 Sri Lanka microenterprise owners affected to various extents by the December 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami were surveyed five times at quarterly intervals between March 2005 and April 2006. Mental health recovery was measured through questions on return to normalcy and change in life outlook. Business profits were used to measure livelihoods recovery. We find that these mental health process measures are correlated with post-traumatic stress disorder and general mental health in a validation survey, and display similar correlates to both in the cross-section. However, socioeconomic factors are not found to be significant in predicting the dynamics of mental health recovery in a fixed effects logistic regression. Mental health recovery from a given initial level therefore appears to depend largely on time since the disaster, and not on economic recovery of an individual's livelihood. We test the hypothesis that in an economic recovery, unionization negatively affects job creation. We examine state-level job growth following two recent recessions, those with troughs in November 1982 and March 1991. In the five years following the troughs, we assess whether variations across states in union membership and fight-to-work laws affect the rate of job growth. We find evidence that links union influence to slower job growth during an economic recovery, a finding consistent with previous studies reporting that unions negatively affect average employment and employment growth. The article examines economic recovery of Burundi through adoption of World Trade Organization's effective trade policies, in the midst of country's socio-political incidents.

Purpose – Consumers use cues to assess whether a recovery is effective. Prior literature on service recovery has focused mainly on individual-related factors. This paper aims to study how other consumers in the same failure and recovery influence an individual consumer to evaluate the firm's recovery efforts. Design/methodology/approach – Two experiments were conducted. Experiment 1 tested the interaction effects between recovery modes (public vs private) and recovery dimensions (economic vs social) on an individual consumer's evaluation of a recovery strategy for a group service failure. Experiment 2 investigated the complementary role of social recovery on economic compensation. Findings – Experiment 1 identified a significant interaction effect. Results suggest that an individual in a group service failure responds more favorably to public economic recovery than to private recovery. However, an individual's reaction to social recovery follows the opposite pattern. Furthermore, in experiment 2 a complementary effect between economic recovery and social recovery was found. Originality/value – One potential contribution is that the paper sheds light on the issue related to the influence from other affected consumers in the same service failure and recovery situation in affected consumers' recovery evaluation. An individual will consider the recovery other individuals receive when he or she evaluates the recovery's strategy. The paper also provides insight into the complementary use of economic and social recoveries to enhance a consumer's evaluation of a firm's overall recovery at a reduced cost. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
