Water and energy consumption and carbon emissions caused by humans have vital impacts on the natural environment. Due to the dramatic global environmental pollution problem, understanding the relationship between these factors is emerging as an important approach to realising sustainable development. However, with the strengthening of interregional trade links, it is difficult to manage and evaluate their relationship. Therefore, from the perspective of regional and industrial sectors, using the multiregional input-output (MRIO) model and social network analysis (SNA), our research explores an innovative analytical methodology to evaluate the characteristics of the energy-water-carbon spatial network, and a scheme is proposed to improve it. The results demonstrate that the characteristics of water scarcity and energy enrichment could lead to a net inflow of the water footprint and a net outflow of the energy and carbon footprints. Moreover, traditional high-energy-consumption industrial sectors contribute significantly to the energy and carbon footprints. The energy-water-carbon spatial network correlation is low and unstable, and it lacks rationalisation and balance in resource-based areas. Network-based energy-water-carbon research provides more insights toward understanding the carbon emission reduction responsibilities of industrial supply chains. Food supply chains hold significant embodied carbon emissions that need to be mitigated and neutralized. This study aimed to explore the historical Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions associated with household food consumption at a local scale i.e. across the eight English regions and the four nations that comprise the United Kingdom (UK). UK EatWell guidelines were used to explore the potential change in emissions and food costs in a scenario of transitions to healthier diets across the study areas. These emissions were calculated based on food consumption data before the advent of the Covid-pandemic i.e. between the years 2001 and 2018. Spatial data analysis was used to explore if the study areas had any significant correlations with respect to the emissions during the study period. The results displayed a potential reduction in GHG emissions for all study areas in the explored scenario. Further impacts include a reduction in household food costs across a majority of the areas during the study period. However, a consistent trend of significant correlations among the study areas was absent. This study concludes that local or regional policymaking should take precedence over national regulations to achieve healthier diets that are both carbon-neutral and affordable for the households. Carbon neutrality and resilience are two of important goals pursued by supply chains today. This study seeks to determine how carbon footprint reduction (CFR) can be achieved in a resilient supply chain from a process integration perspective. Based on contingency theory, we employed the decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory (DEMATEL) approach to examine the critical influencing factors of process integration using evaluations from academic and professional experts. Our findings reveal that, first, at the strategic level, supply chain collaboration (SCC) and supply chain agility and responsiveness (SCAR) have the highest contributions to process integration. Second, process and control risks have the highest contributions in supply chain risk management; herein, collaborative planning, forecasting, and replenishment (CPFR) holds the highest contribution in the SCC, visibility and velocity have the highest contributions in the SCAR, and supply chain efficiency holds the highest contribution in supply chain flexibility (SCF). Finally, CPFR has a significant influence on both supplier and customer engagement, with supply chain intelligence influencing customer engagement in the SCC. Both the standardisation and parallel processes influence supplier spending in the SCF. Karaka (Corynocarpus laevigatus J.R. Forst. & G. Forst.) is an endemic New Zealand tree species that attracts polarising views and controversy. Prior to the arrival of humans in New Zealand, karaka was probably restricted to warmer areas of the northern North Island, but it now occurs throughout much of New Zealand, including on Rēkohu/Chatham Island (where it is known as kōpi). Genetic analyses have shed light on the evolutionary origins of karaka and its translocation history. Karaka holds significant cultural and historical value for Māori and Moriori, but it is also viewed as an environmental weed outside its natural range due to its capacity to outcompete resident native vegetation and disrupt local ecosystems. Karaka fruit can be toxic to dogs and other animals, including humans, if not prepared correctly before consumption. The management of karaka in New Zealand presents a unique challenge that exemplifies the complexities inherent in balancing cultural values with ecological integrity. The aim of this paper is to bring together all these different perspectives and explore avenues for future management strategies that accommodate both the cultural significance and the ecological impact of karaka. An informed, culturally sensitive management strategy that involves mana whenua can pave the way for a future where both cultural and ecological aspects of the karaka tree are given due consideration where appropriate. Human activities have profound impacts on land use and the supply–demand balance of ecosystem services (ESs). Various activities, such as urban construction, urban and rural planning, and inter-basin water transfer projects, continuously reshape land use patterns. This is a case study of the Anhui section of the Yangtze-Huaihe Water Diversion Project. Data from 2000, 2010, and 2020 is analyzed. Additionally, the patch-generating land use simulation (PLUS) model is utilized to quantify the specific impacts of the water diversion project construction on the supply and demand of ESs. The results indicate that the comprehensive dynamic attitude of land use during the project construction period significantly increased, rising from 0.16 to 13.79%, and mainly affected forest, water areas, construction land, and unused land. Specifically, the construction of the project led to significant changes in water purification, biodiversity, and, especially, hydrological regulation services. Additionally, the migration of residents significantly impacted the demand for ESs. The study also found a significant correlation between land use changes and the balance of ES supply and demand: the proportion of cultivated land and construction land is positively correlated with the balance, while the proportion of forest, grassland, and water areas is negatively correlated. This study provides empirical data for understanding the environmental and socio-economic impacts of large-scale water diversion projects and offers a scientific basis for local mitigation and control of adverse impacts. A global surge in socio‐economic activities is putting a massive burden on ecological balance, which has become one of the major challenges worldwide. Yet, it is complicated for national and international authorities to find eco‐friendly and interlinked socio‐economic developments due to a lack of empirical evidence. In this era of digitalization, digital financial inclusion has an ability to create a balance among economy, ecology, and society by conserving natural resources. Meanwhile, it minimizes ecological burden by promoting sustainable energy transition at all societal levels, which is the main agenda of the United Nations (UN) Climate Change 28th Conference of Parties (UN‐COP28). Focusing on these intentions, this research aims to explore the dynamic influence of digital financial inclusion (DFI), sustainable energy transition (SET), and governance (GOV) on global ecological footprints (EFT) by taking a sample of 121 nations within a timeframe of 2003–2022. This study utilizes a two‐step system generalized method of moments (GMM) and Driscoll–Kraay (D–K) regression as prime and robust empirical techniques, respectively. The outcomes reveal that DFI significantly reduces EFT worldwide and upper‐middle‐income samples; however, it significantly enhances EFT in high‐income nations. While DFI has a negative and insignificant connection with EFT in lower‐middle and low‐income countries. Moreover, SET significantly declines EFT in all categories, and mixed outcomes are found for the linkage between GOV and EFT. Mobbing is a widespread, vocally coordinated behaviour where species approach and harass a threat. The noisy miner (Manorina melanocephala) is a notorious native Australian honeyeater, well‐known for its hyperaggressive mobbing. Numerous studies have identified negative impacts of their mobbing behaviour, highlighting the exclusion of competitors from colony areas and the resulting loss of woodland‐bird biodiversity. Despite this, few studies have investigated mobbing itself, and our understanding of the factors which influence its expression remains limited. Here, we use a field‐based playback experiment to investigate whether mobbing responses vary in relation to colony borders and caller familiarity. Noisy miners were more likely to respond, reacted more quickly and responded more strongly to mobbing calls broadcast inside as opposed to outside the colony. These behavioural differences likely arise from variation in the relative costs and benefits of responding. When noisy miners did mob outside the colony, more individuals joined in response to unfamiliar as opposed to familiar callers. Our results reveal that noisy miner mobbing may not be as indiscriminate as often assumed, with caller familiarity and location influencing this behaviour. We suggest there are benefits to greater consideration of the factors impacting noisy miner mobbing behaviour. Invasive alien species (IAS) are one amongst the dominant drivers of global environmental change. The reported effects of IAS on biodiversity and ecosystems are often highly variable across species, habitats, and environmental settings, which constrains our capacity to empirically generalise their overall impact. To date, meta‐analyses have investigated the ecological impacts of IAS using only mean effects, while variance effects – an equally important measure in quantifying the efficacy or generalizability of a treatment – has largely remained ignored. Using a global meta‐analysis of 586 and 522 effect sizes related to mean and variance measures respectively from 30 studies, here we provide the first quantitative synthesis of the extent to which a global plant invader Lantana camara affects the mean and variance of ecological variables relevant at species, community and ecosystem levels. Our results suggest that for individual response classes, both the mean and variance effects from the species invasion differed considerably in their magnitude and direction, with the effect on most response classes being highly heterogeneous and non‐significant. The study design had a significant effect on both the mean and variance effects from the species invasion, but the ecosystem type, continent, and latitude act as weak predictors of both mean and variance effects. By investigating both mean and variance effects, our study provides first quantitative synthesis on ecological impacts of a globally problematic invasive plant. Based on our findings, we highlight the current knowledge gaps and suggest future research directions, particularly the need to focus on causes of variance in invasion impact studies for effective management and restoration of invaded landscapes. Foreign investments, viewed as a matter of social responsibility, can improve environmental quality in the host country. In addition, although foreign investors promote economic development because they prefer countries where environmental policies are not stringent, they may increase environmental degradation by transferring dirty industries to host countries. However, in EU countries, environmental policies are strictly implemented, and incentives are offered to increase investments in clean sectors. In this context, there is a widespread opinion that greenfield investments will be environmentally friendly thanks to environmental regulations in EU countries. Despite this, no study has been found that analyzes these views empirically. In this study, the effect of greenfield investment and investment freedom on environmental quality in EU countries for the period 2003–2022 is investigated with panel cointegration and long-run estimators within the framework of the EKC hypothesis. According to the results of the study, while greenfield investment increases environmental quality in Italy and Romania, investment freedom increases environmental quality in Belgium, Croatia, Denmark, Italy and Spain. The EU should set a standard in order to attract environmentally friendly foreign investments, taking into account its strategic location and infrastructure. The environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) hypothesis is tested for EU countries. When accounting for the social–ecological impact of an ecological restoration program, both objective environmental contexts and people's subjective perceptions are required. While this kind of environmental impact assessment lacks a comprehensive perspective. We use the difference-in-differences model to evaluate the effect of the greenness of the landscape after ecological migration in the Qilian Mountains in China; and analysis of variance and fixed effects models are used to evaluate the effects of such ecological restoration programs on local people's perceptions. The results show that the ecological migration program in the Qilian Mountains has been successful at not only significantly improving remotely sensed greenness at the landscape scale, but also at enhancing immigrants' environmental perceptions. These findings demonstrate the environmental impacts of ecological migration from a social–ecological perspective, and can provide methodological implications for landscape planning to support a better understanding of ecological restoration programs in the drylands. The topic of electric vehicles is currently generating significant interest worldwide. The demand for these electric vehicles in developing countries is currently very slow and not that steady. The importance of Electric Vehicles (EVs) in the upcoming future is high and so it is crucial to figure out why these EVs are not being sold as much as we expect them in the market today. This paper tries to find out the multiple reasons why these vehicles are not in high demand, and why their counterparts, gasoline-fuelled vehicles are more in demand in the market. This paper discusses, after reviewing multiple other papers, why the consumption of EVs is low. Why their market demand is not where it should be and also multiple other facets. Finally, the paper finds that reasons like higher costs and low government incentives among multiple others are some factors leading to a low market demand for EVs. • First record of the presence of P. gatunense in South Africa. • Reappearance of P. bipes , last reported from South Africa during the 1930s. • Both are potential bloom-forming associated with several problems. • The morphology, taxonomy geographical distribution and limited ecology are discussed. The common freshwater dinoflagellate genus Peridinium includes the species P. gatunense and P. bipes , which are found globally. Despite forming a significant portion of algal communities, research on dinoflagellates in Africa is limited. This paper reports the first record of the presence of P. gatunense in South Africa, as well as the reappearance of P. bipes , which was last reported from South Africa during the 1930s. Light and scanning electron microscopy were used for species identification. Knowledge about the presence of these species is crucial because both are potential bloom-forming and associated with several problems having ecological impacts. The presence of both these species has potential in inhibiting the growth of the problematic cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginosa , as demonstrated by previous studies. It may present a natural and effective solution for the remediation of water bodies subjected to harmful cyanobacterial blooms. These insights are crucial for proactive management of freshwater ecosystems in the country. Conducting an assessment of ecosystem service values and examining the influence of changes in land utilization on these values in Chengdu City help to deepen our comprehension of the ecological and environmental impacts of such changes. This, in turn, provides valuable insights into the construction of an ecological civilization and the sustainable utilization of land resources in Chengdu City. Based on land-use data from 2005 to 2020, this paper employs a dynamic model of land-use change, the land-use structure change index method, and an ecosystem service value measurement model to analyze the impact of land-use change on ecosystem service value in Chengdu City. The results showed that (1) the area of construction land in Chengdu City increased and those of cultivated land and unused land decreased; (2) from 2005 to 2014, the ecosystem service value in Chengdu City witnessed a rise of 1.559 billion yuan, while from 2014 to 2020, it experienced a decline of 947.77 million yuan; and (3) the sensitivity index of the ecosystem value shows that forest land contributes the most to the total value of ecosystem services. This paper comprehensively analyzes the impact of land-use change in Chengdu City from 2005 to 2020 on the ecosystem service value. It offers a reference foundation for advancing the efficient allocation of land resources in Chengdu City and nurturing the balanced and sustainable development of the economy and ecology. Between 2009 and 2021 almost the complete beam trawl fleet of the Netherlands switched from conventional beam trawls (BT) to pulse trawls (PT) using electrical stimulation to catch sole, Solea solea. Electric fishing, being banned in the EU in 1988, was made possible in 2006 under a derogation. Over the years stakeholders expressed concern about ecosystem effects. Here we review the research conducted. PT improved the selectivity of the fishery and reduced the ecological side effects. PT caught more sole per hour fishing but less discards and benthos than BT. The transition to PT reduced the surface area swept (lower towing speed), sediment depth of disturbance and associated benthic impacts, as well as fuel consumption. Laboratory experiments with 9 fish and 17 benthic invertebrate species showed that exposure to a commercial bipolar pulse stimulus did not result in harmful effects except in cod. Autopsy of cod sampled from PT revealed that 40% had an internal injury. Injury rates in other roundfish species was low (< 2%) and absent in flatfish. Electrical-induced impacts on biogeochemistry were not observed. The transition increased competition with other fishers which fed the resentment against PT. Governance arrangements under which the number of temporary licenses expanded, undermined legitimacy of the gear, resulting in a ban in 2021. Although questions about the ecological impact of electrical stimulation remain, adverse effects are considered negligible in comparison with the benefits. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

It is generally accepted that in order to preserve the sustainability of resource utilization worldwide, it is imperative to maximize the positive environmental effects and minimize the negative ones in agriculture. To assess the impact of agricultural ecosystems on environmental footprints in China, this study used a time-series econometric approach spanning the period from 1990 to 2020. The suitability of the variables was confirmed through stationarity tests, followed by the application of the Johansen technique. The Johansen technique's findings showed that long-run co-integration is present in both exogenous and endogenous variables. Moreover, the bound testing technique with the ARDL model was applied to validate the long-run results. The findings revealed a positive correlation between agricultural ecological footprints and factors such as agricultural land, energy consumption, fertilizer usage, and agricultural employment with short-run elasticity. In the long run, agricultural land, energy consumption, and fertilizer usage were all identified as having a positive impact on the ecological footprint. Consequently, the agricultural ecosystem faces strain due to stringent agricultural practices aimed at enhancing production. The integration of modern technology becomes imperative to reduce carbon emissions, promote environmentally-friendly industries, and enhance the nation's land bio-capacity, thereby mitigating the strain on the ecological ecosystem. This study offers valuable insights for academia, policymakers, researchers, and planners in formulating a comprehensive strategy and vision for establishing sustainable food production and fostering favorable environmental conditions, particularly pertinent to China and with broader applicability to the global context. The carbon footprint of methanol from cradle‐to‐grave is evaluated using three process concepts to capture CO2, i.e., one using CO2 from direct air capture (DAC) and the other two utilizing CO2 from a steel mill's blast furnace gas (BFG). Hydrogen is supplied by onsite electrolysis, or from a German offshore wind park, or an Australian solar park with ammonia as hydrogen carrier. The study is of interest to life cycle assessment (LCA) practitioners, policymakers, and industries' management who are involved in regulating, planning, implementing, and operating projects which aim to produce fuels using hydrogen from electrolysis (so‐called 'e‐fuels'). The influence of assumptions in the RED‐II delegated act regarding recycled carbon fuels and renewable liquid and gaseous fuels of non‐biological origin on the carbon footprint results is examined. The RED‐II assumption regarding the credits for captured CO2 after 2041 indicate that DAC‐based concepts are advantageous with respect to BFG, although the LCA results indicate the opposite. German legislation sets forth that anthropogenic greenhouse gases must be net-zero from 2045 onward (KSG, 2019). In contrast, road freight transport is projected to grow significantly (BMVBS, 2008; BMVI, 2021). If sustainable solutions for road freight transport are not implemented swiftly, Germany will not be able to meet its climate protection targets. This study analyzes the potential of the eHighway system—an overhead contact line-based electrification of trucks—to reduce the road freight transport's carbon footprint. Based on more than three years of field test operation with over 500,000 real-world driven kilometers, we estimate the saving potential of directly emitted greenhouse gases from five pilot overhead contact line trucks that use the eHighway system (O-trucks). We conclude that with only a five percent electrified stretch of a trip, 14–17% of direct greenhouse gas emissions are saved compared to a conventional truck. We develop a scaling and comparison calculator for the estimation of directly emitted greenhouse gases of O-trucks. We argue that with an electricity mix based upon renewable energies and an appropriately extended eHighway network, road freight transport is capable of offering transport with net-zero greenhouse gas emissions. Based on a unique data set, we provide a benchmark for all further research in evaluating eHighway technology and for comparing it to alternative drive technologies. • We analyze the overall GHG emission saving potential of the eHighway system. • We develop a scaling and comparison calculator for estimating GHG emissions. • The eHighway system allows savings of greenhouse gas emissions of up to 100%. • Especially the electricity mix has a major impact on the GHG emissions. This article brings the study of China's environment and society down to earth, through a micro-sociological inquiry into everyday environmental sensibilities under the Chinese state's ecological civilization framework. We empirically investigate the impact of ecological civilization on everyday life from the vantage point of China's zero-Covid period (2020-2022). During this period, the state's top-down approach to managing the environment and society was implemented in an airtight fashion, resulting in outcomes that illustrate both the promises and perils of ecological civilization. We organize ethnographic evidence into three clusters: human-to-non-human interactions, human-to-object relations, and human-to-human sociality. Our findings portray a touchless, ultrasanitized, tech-ubiquitous, and ecologically monotonous urban experience. The eco-civilized configuration of contemporary China negates some of the most basic human instincts about the environment. Ecological civilization therefore is a denaturalizing and dehumanizing project that self-aggrandizes as being both ecologically sound and civilizationally advanced. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Horizon scans have emerged as a valuable tool to anticipate the incoming invasive alien species (IAS) by judging species on their potential impacts. However, little research has been conducted on quantifying actual impacts and assessing causes of species‐specific vulnerabilities to particular IAS due to persistent methodological challenges. The underlying interspecific mechanisms driving species‐specific vulnerabilities therefore remain poorly understood, even though they can substantially improve the accuracy of risk assessments. Given that interspecific interactions underlying ecological impacts of IAS are often shaped by phenological synchrony, we tested the hypothesis that temporal mismatches in breeding phenology between native species and IAS can mitigate their ecological impacts. Focusing on the invasive American bullfrog (Lithobates catesbeianus), we combined an environmental DNA (eDNA) quantitative barcoding and metabarcoding survey in Belgium with a global meta‐analysis, and integrated citizen‐science data on breeding phenology. We examined whether the presence of native amphibian species was negatively related to the presence or abundance of invasive bullfrogs and whether this relationship was affected by their phenological mismatches. The field study revealed a significant negative effect of increasing bullfrog eDNA concentrations on native amphibian species richness and community structure. These observations were shaped by species‐specific vulnerabilities to invasive bullfrogs, with late spring‐ and summer‐breeding species being strongly affected, while winter‐breeding species remained unaffected. This trend was confirmed by the global meta‐analysis. A significant negative relationship was observed between phenological mismatch and the impact of bullfrogs. Specifically, native amphibian species with breeding phenology differing by 6 weeks or less from invasive bullfrogs were more likely to be absent in the presence of bullfrogs than species whose phenology differed by more than 6 weeks with that of bullfrogs. Taken together, we present a novel method based on the combination of aqueous eDNA quantitative barcoding and metabarcoding to quantify the ecological impacts of biological invaders at the community level. We show that phenological mismatches between native and invasive species can be a strong predictor of invasion impact regardless of ecological or methodological context. According to the greenhouse gas (GHG) protocol for cities, GHGs are responsible for an estimated 75 per cent of global energy-related carbon dioxide emissions. This represents a key opportunity to tackle climate change. With the year 2023 and, in particular, the month of July delivering record-breaking temperatures, this demonstrates a clear need to accelerate decarbonisation and, in this context, to reduce the carbon footprint of cities. Further, acting on urban development addresses a number of key United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs). Many cities, however, are struggling to break away from a reliance on carbon and some are economically dependent on it. This paper seeks to investigate, through an energy justice lens, some first considerations of how to secure just and sustainable urban regeneration. It posits that energy justice, and its five core principles, is a useful analytical tool for considering the justice and development concerns related to the transition to a low-carbon world. The cities examined in brief in this comparative study are Bordeaux in France, Venice in Italy, Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam and Bangkok in Thailand. The issue of street dust pollution is primarily related to levels of microplastic particles (MPs) and heavy metals, raising concerns about their potential risk to the environment. In this work, twenty street dust samples with three replicates were collected from different areas (residential, commercial, and industrial) on the left side of Mosul city/Iraq, to investigate the presence of MPs and study their characteristics. Additionally, to assess the potential ecological risk impact of twelve heavy metals. Among the 60 dust samples taken from the streets, an average of MPs ranging between 244 and 2760 per 15 grams of dust was detected. Most of these plastic particles were transparent fragments with sizes varying from less than 10 to 200 µm as observed through a stereomicroscope and a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Furthermore, results from FTIR analysis indicated that polyvinyl chloride (PVC) was the dominant polymer type found in MPs, accounting for around 63%. The levels of metal in road dust were assessed using X-ray fluorescence (XRF) showing that quantification of Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Sb, Hg, and Pb surpassed the background values of world soils among the twelve elements studied. Variation coefficients (VCs) coupled with enrichment and contamination factors revealed that Cr, Cu, Zn, As, Se, Cd, Sb, Hg, and Pb are associated with both sources (anthropogenic and natural). On the other hand, Mn, Fe, and Ni originate from natural sources. Calculated potential ecological risk (Er) indicated high ecological risk by Hg. The world is currently undergoing a transition from a linear economy to a circular one, with the wastewater sector offering numerous opportunities for decarbonization and mitigating the impacts of climate change. Urban wastewater systems are significant sources of greenhouse gas emissions, highlighting the need for a shift towards net-zero carbon states. This paper aims to provide insights into minimizing carbon footprints and achieving net-zero carbon conditions in wastewater systems by examining sources of GHG emissions and exploring effective mitigation strategies. Strategies for decarbonization include operational optimization, energy and resource recovery, source separation systems, and decentralization. This research introduces a hybrid humidification-dehumidification (HDH) desalination unit and dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) system to produce power and drinking water using the hot and humid waste air from buildings equipped with wind towers. The thermodynamic, exergeoeconomic and carbon footprint study of this hybrid system is conducted in five arid and semiarid regions, including Tehran, Isfahan, Birjand, Yazd and Kerman, located in Iran. The proposed hybrid system's thermodynamic, cost and CO2 emission rates are evaluated and compared by varying design parameters. The results indicate that increasing wind tower height and DSSC tilt angle significantly improve the thermodynamic performance of the system while rising water-to-air mass flow rate ratio (MR) and saline water temperature, respectively, lessen the cost and CO2 emission rates of the system in all desired regions. Furthermore, the system's optimum performance in each zone is identified using the multi-objective moth-flame optimization (MOMFO) and decision-making procedure. Optimization results indicate that the highest power and freshwater of 783.4 W and 120.5 kg/month, respectively, can be achieved in Birjand, and the highest energy and exergy efficiencies are obtained by 10.8% and 11.41% in Kerman. Moreover, the system delivers the lowest cost and CO2 emission rates of 0.73 $/month and 4.61 kgCO2/month in Tehran. The obtained theoretical results can be a guide for optimal design and practical application of such a system in arid and semiarid regions from the thermodynamic, economic and environmental perspectives. The relationship between energy consumption, environmental pollution, and economic growth has been the subject of intense research over the past few decades. However, empirical evidence remains scarce and with mixed results. This paper throws a new light on the nonlinear impact of environmental degradation on economic growth depending on the level of energy intensity. This study provides an original approach in the context of Malaysia by utilizing an innovative threshold regression approach suggested by Hansen (Econometrica 68(3):575–603, 2000), which allows the data to endogenously divided into two regimes with an exogenous threshold variable. We find strong evidence that environmental degradation has a nonlinear effect on economic growth in Malaysia. In particular, CO2 has a negative effect on growth, but only after the primary energy intensity reaches a threshold level of 91.33 tons of oil equivalent (TOE)/GDP and the final energy intensity reaches 51.56 TOE/GDP, respectively. Our results are robust in terms of ecological footprint. Several policy implications are highlighted which aim to encourage sustainable energy use for sustainable growth in the future. Forest management allows the sustained removal of significant amounts of carbon from the atmosphere. Within different activities in the forest, wood utilisation has the most significant man-made environmental impact which affects the carbon balance, which is important to know, to be able to accurately identify its role in climate change. This study aims to determine the carbon footprint of logging during utilisation based on scenario analysis in national default and theoretical assortment structures (11 additional scenarios for each forest stand) within the entire life cycle of raw wood products. Based on a common functional unit (100 m3 of cut wood), a comparative environmental life cycle analysis (LCA) for intermediate and final cutting was performed in shortwood forestry work systems in beech (Fagus spp.), oak (Quercus spp.), spruce (Picea spp.), black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia), and hybrid poplar (Populus x euramericana) stands in Hungary. After obtaining the results, the present study calculated the carbon footprint order for the utilisation life cycle phases and the entire tree utilisation life cycle. The distribution of absolute carbon footprint (ACF: considered emitted CO2 from fossil and biotic origins together) by final cutting exhibited the following order: hybrid poplar (6%)—spruce (8%)—beech (26%)—oak (27%)—black locust (33%). The ACF ranking for the whole technological life cycle (intermediate and final cutting, 400 m3 of cut wood) was hybrid poplar– spruce—oak—beech–black locust. This paper introduces a "Smart Fertilizing Using Internet of Things (IoT) Multi-Sensors" system to enhance fertilizer management in agriculture. The system has four main parts: the Nutro Determining Unit (NDU), the Nutro Sensing Unit (NSU), the Nutro UAV Variable Fertiliser Spray System, and a Variable Rate Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) Sprayer model. The NDU collects vital data on Soil Moisture (SM) and Environmental Conditions (EnC) using advanced IoT cameras, while the NSU consolidates and normalises the data for advanced analysis using Heuristic Decision Trees (HDT) and Random Forest (RF) algorithms. In India, a data-driven UAV system uses IoT and UAV technologies to determine nutrient needs and create a prescription map for fertilizer application. The approach caused increases in the efficient utilisation of resources, Crop Yield (CY), and ecological footprint when it underwent evaluation in a crop maize field that was 14 hectares in size. A fresh benchmark for Smart Farming (SF) techniques has been set up by this method of operation, which is motivated by data and symbolises an important innovation in modern and ecologically conscious SF methods. Recreational sports are essential for boosting physical health and improving quality of life. The goal of this research is to optimize the planning of leisure sports by presenting a new method based on a multi-objective genetic algorithm. Acknowledging the intricacy of organizing recreational sports events, we suggest an approach that concurrently maximizes several goals, such as the use of resources, player happiness, and ecological impact. The topic is first formulated as a multi-objective optimization task in the paper, and a genetic algorithm is used to handle the objectives' inherent conflict. With its ability to effectively explore the solution space, the genetic algorithm produces a set of Pareto-optimal solutions that show trade-offs for the conflicting goals. The integration of several factors, including time preferences, geographical limitations, and environmental sustainability, guarantees a thorough and equitable strategy for leisure sports scheduling. In the area of leisure sports planning, the use of a multi-objective genetic algorithm offers a reliable solution that can be tailored to meet various circumstances and goals. Purpose: The textile industry is inclined towards an unsustainable trajectory because of a variety of environmental issues stemming from the intensive use of water and energy during wet processing. As climate change has been regarded as the biggest health threat facing humanity and textiles' color derived from dyestuff is closely associated with wet processing, this study focuses on evaluating the carbon footprint (CF) of textiles dyed with different dyestuff recipes and identifying the quantitative correlation between the CF and the mass of dyestuff inputted, to seek opportunities for improvement from the manufacturers' perspective. Methods: The industrial CF of 25 cotton-dyed knitted fabrics with different reactive dyestuff recipes was assessed referring to PAS 2395 and the methodology of life cycle assessment, where the investigated phases include knitting, wet processing, packing, and sewage treatment. The primary data of assessed fabrics were collected by on-site investigation in a knitting manufacturing company in China. The functional unit is knitting, dyeing, and finishing 1 t of cotton. The mass of dyestuff in a dyeing bath for 1 kg fabric (MDB) was utilized to characterize different colors of textiles. A quantitative correlation between the CF of wet processing and MDB was established through second-order polynomial regression. Results and discussion: Within the given system boundary, 1 t of cotton-dyed knitted fabric emitted an average of 7505.12 kg CO2 eq, and energy accounts for the largest proportion. When white fabric without any dyestuff was included and excluded from the sample range, the maximum differences in CF between fabrics were 4437.90 kg CO2 eq and 3546.55 kg CO2 eq, respectively. Furthermore, with the consecutive increment of MDB within a certain range (0 ~ 5.41%), the CF of pre-processing shows a gentle downward trend while the CF of dyeing exhibits a trend of initially rising and subsequently declining within a certain range (0 ~ 1.37%) and then presents an upward trend. Interestingly, the CF of wet processing is affected by the alternation of its two major processes. The above results may reduce the absoluteness of the argument that "textiles with darker colors are less environmentally friendly." Conclusions: Special attention should be paid to the contribution of textiles' color to their CFs, owing to the substantial variations that exist in the CF of wet processing among knitted fabrics of different colors. The contribution of wet processing to global warming is impacted by multiple factors, including steam consumption, chemical usage, liquor ratio, and process time. How low can you reduce the carbon footprint associated with an index-based portfolio without creating unacceptable levels of active risk versus a capitalization-weighted benchmark? We find that an investor may be able to reduce the carbon footprint of a typical index-based portfolio by more than 50%, while keeping active risk low, near 1% tracking error volatility. This involves investing in companies with low greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and reducing exposure to companies with high emissions. The intensity of emissions per unit of revenue is a particularly helpful metric. Portfolio screening is an effective approach that removes emissions-intensive companies from an index, but can create unintended sector, industry, country, and factor exposures in the portfolio. Using an integrated portfolio optimization approach to minimize carbon intensity, we can explicitly constrain multiple risk dimensions. Another approach we explore is a two-step process: 1) apply a screen to invest only in lower carbon-intensity stocks, then 2) optimize the portfolio by minimizing tracking error versus the index. We study the effects of constraints on the optimization problem and find that loosening sector and industry constraints enables a greater reduction in carbon emissions, without a significant increase in overall active risk. An embodied CO2 emissions intensity database estimated from input–output data at current prices is now available in Japan. This study compares two non-survey methods: The double-deflation (DD) method and an elaborated approach combining the DD method with the generalized RAS method to deflate an input–output table (IOT). We used these methods to estimate new datasets of embodied CO2 emission intensity data in Japan, utilizing Japan's IOTs for 2005, 2011, and 2015 at constant prices in 2015. Furthermore, we compare the estimated data of 367 commodity sectors for a specific year (2005 or 2011). The results reveal that the intensity for certain aggregated sector groups, such as non-ferrous metals and finance and insurance, exhibits higher uncertainty owing to the extreme price homogeneity assumption associated with the DD method. Consequently, we recommend that life-cycle-assessment practitioners use an open database when analyzing changes in the carbon footprint of products over time. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Sleeper populations are established populations of introduced species whose population growth is limited by one or more abiotic or biotic conditions. Sleeper populations pose an invasion risk if a change in those limiting conditions, such as climate change, enables population growth and invasion. With thousands of established introduced species, it is critical that we identify and prioritize potential sleepers. Here, we identified introduced plants established in the northeastern United States with high impacts and the potential to expand with climate change. Of 1795 introduced plants established in one or more northeastern states, we focused on 118 taxa regulated by one or more states outside the Northeast plus 61 taxa recorded as invasive globally and under consideration for regulation in the Northeast. We used the environmental impact classification for alien taxa framework to quantify negative ecological and socioeconomic impacts reported in the scientific literature for these 169 taxa. We compared mean minimum winter temperature and annual precipitation where the species were abundant with current and future climate in the Northeast to evaluate whether climate change could increase risk. We identified 49 plants with ecological impacts linked to loss of native diversity and 94 plants with socioeconomic impacts. 81 species showed an increase in climatic suitability for abundant populations with climate change. Using ecological impact, increased climate suitability, and presence in fewer than 20 Northeastern counties, we highlight 18 species as high priorities for potential management in the Northeast. Small biomass piece, huge power—a fulcrum to lift two global lifelines, where water and energy meet. Initiative of new-to-nature electron–ion nexus and inter-functional synergy showcased sustainable integration between over-limit solar-evaporative desalination, even in backlit environments, and robust long-term all-day clean electricity co-generation. Current dual-functional research aimed at co-producing freshwater and electricity faces significant challenges, including sub-optimal capacities ("1 + 1 < 2"), poor inter-functional coordination, high carbon footprints, and large costs. Mainstream water-to-electricity conversions are often compromised owing to functionality separation and erratic gradients. Herein, we present a sustainable strategy based on renewable biomass that addresses these issues by jointly achieving competitive solar-evaporative desalination and robust clean electricity generation. Using hydrothermally activated basswood, our solar desalination exceeded the 100% efficiency bottleneck even under reduced solar illumination. Through simple size-tuning, we achieved a high evaporation rate of 3.56 kg h−1 m−2 and an efficiency of 149.1%, representing 128%–251% of recent values without sophisticated surface engineering. By incorporating an electron–ion nexus with interfacial Faradaic electron circulation and co-ion-predominated micro-tunnel hydrodynamic flow, we leveraged free energy from evaporation to generate long-term electricity (0.38 W m−3 for over 14 d), approximately 322% of peer performance levels. This inter-functional nexus strengthened dual functionalities and validated general engineering practices. Quality improvement approaches are increasingly being used to address the problem of healthcare's climate and ecological impact. While sustainability is increasingly recognized as a domain of quality, consensus is lacking on the most appropriate measures and metrics for those looking to reduce ecological impacts through quality improvement initiatives. We propose a scoping review to summarize approaches for selecting and quantifying ecological impacts in the published quality improvement literature. We will search multiple electronic databases (MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, and Scopus) from 2000 onwards, to identify published quality improvement initiatives in the human healthcare setting intended to address ecological impact with at least one quantitative measure of ecological impact, such as kilograms of carbon dioxide equivalent greenhouse gas. Two independent reviewers working in parallel will screen studies for inclusion and abstract study data, including publication, study, and ecological impact characteristics. Charted data will be synthesized narratively as well as with descriptive tables, figures, and summary statistics. In doing so, we will map areas of relative focus as well as gaps in the measurement of ecological impact across quality improvement initiatives. This map can in turn be used to raise awareness of ecological impacts requiring broader consideration, encouraging holistic and clinically relevant approaches to measuring ecological impact in future quality improvement work. Body size reduction is a universal response to warming, but its ecological consequences across biological levels, from individuals to ecosystems, remain poorly understood. Most biological processes scale with body size, and warming-induced changes in body size can therefore have important ecological consequences. To understand these consequences, we propose a unifying, hierarchical framework for the ecological impacts of intraspecific body size reductions due to thermal plasticity that explicitly builds on three key pathways: morphological constraints, bioenergetic constraints and surface-to-volume ratio. Using this framework, we synthesize key consequences of warming-induced body size reductions at multiple levels of biological organization. Ecological impairments are considered one of the most contentious and uncertain subjects in intercontinental mediums, and they are also considered a significant apprehension for the entire world. Therefore, environmentalists and policymakers have turned their deliberation from conventional economic expansion to green economic growth. Even though existing studies have deliberated numerous determinants of environmental degradation, financial development, economic policy uncertainty, globalization, and renewable energy influence on ecological footprint is comparatively unexplored simultaneously, especially in financially developed economies. Hence, the present study explored the impact of financial development, economic policy uncertainty, globalization, and renewable energy on ecological footprint from 1995 to 2021. After confirming the issue of potential cross‐sectional dependency, this study employs a second‐generation econometric procedure to estimate robust and consistent estimates. The estimated results from augmented mean group (AMG) and common correlated effect mean group (CCEMG) estimators explored that financial development and renewable energy significantly protect the environment. Conversely, globalization and economic policy uncertainty increase the overall level of ecological footprint in the region. Based on these estimated results, the present research suggests some feasible policy insinuations for accomplishing targets of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG‐7 and SDG‐13). The extraction of crude oil and gold has substantially increased heavy metal contamination in the environment, yet the study of wildlife exposure and biological response to this pollution remains nascent even in the most biodiverse places in the world. We present a survey of heavy metal exposure in the feathers of wedge‐billed woodcreepers (Glyphorynchus spirurus), a resident neotropical bird found within protected regions of the Amazon near oil and gold extraction sites. Our results show elevated heavy metal contamination in samples collected from protected areas proximate to known oil and gold extraction. Surprisingly, several samples from remote reference sites also displayed elevated levels of various heavy metals, suggesting a background of natural deposition or complex heavy metal contamination in the environment from anthropogenic sources. These results highlight the need to understand the ecological and biological impacts of increased heavy metal exposure on wildlife across space and time, including remote regions of the world purportedly untouched by these human‐mediated stressors. Toward this goal, historical and contemporary data from native bird populations may provide crucial indicators for heavy metal contamination and exposure in wildlife and human communities. Achieving sustainable development while mitigating environmental degradation is a pressing global challenge. Economic development, accompanied by industrialization, fossil fuel consumption, and unsustainable use of natural resources, is widely identified in the literature as a leading cause of environmental degradation. Green energy transition (GET) and economic complexity—the shift towards more advanced and knowledge‐driven manufacturing, can be crucial strategies in reducing ecological degradation and helping countries achieve climate change mitigation targets. Green finance can play an important role in environmental sustainability, while geopolitical risk can impede countries' climate mitigation efforts. In this context, this study investigates the impact of GET, economic complexity, green finance, and geopolitical risk on the ecological footprint in OECD countries from 1995 to 2021. These four critical factors are integrated into the same environmental policy framework due to their potential to influence environmental sustainability in OECD economies. The study employed the Method of Moments Quantile Regression to provide robust estimates across different quantiles. The empirical outcomes unveiled that GET significantly reduces the ecological footprint across all quantiles. The economic complexity posed a significant and negative impact across all quantiles except at the lower quantile (τ = 0.10). Green finance also poses a negative impact, indicating its effectiveness in promoting environmental sustainability. However, geopolitical risk exacerbates the ecological footprint. The control variables, GDP and urbanization, are found to increase the ecological footprint. In terms of policy implications, this study suggests that policymakers should focus on increasing the share of green energy, fostering economic complexity and green finance, and mitigating geopolitical tensions to reduce the ecological footprint and achieve environmental sustainability in OECD nations. The enormous ensembles of energy resources have elevated Sub‐Saharan Africa (SSA) to a prominent position in the world energy scene as a leading region in forming a sustainable energy future. However, over half of the population in the region lives without electricity and less than 20% of the population has access to clean fuels. The excessive reliance on fossil fuels such as coal, kerosene, and solid biomass has implications for environmental outcomes in SSA. Nevertheless, the environmental impact of energy poverty from the SSA perspective remains an under‐explored terrain in the research landscape. In this context, to address the pressing challenges of energy poverty and environmental sustainability, this study aims to explore the threat energy poverty poses on the ecological footprints, focusing on “land‐use, carbon footprint, forestry resources, and fishing ground” across 35 SSA countries using disaggregated data covering the period 2000 and 2021. This study employs the novel Method of the Moments Quantile Regression following the Stochastic Impacts by Regression on Population, Affluence and Technology model as the reference theoretical and analytical framework. The findings disclose heterogeneous effects of rural and urban energy poverty on ecological footprint items. When comparing the magnitudes, we found that rural energy poverty has a more detrimental impact on land‐use than urban energy poverty. Energy poverty is found to have no reliable power to explain the variation in carbon footprint and fishing ground. In the meantime, urban energy poverty exerts a positive effect on forestry resource sustainability. Surprisingly, population density is found to have a significant and desirable impact on land‐use. Tea gardens are the main economic backbone of the Terai & Dooars region and intermingle with forest areas of northern Bengal in India. The study aims to explore the vascular epiphytic diversity and their zone-wise assemblage pattern on 10 dominant shade trees in the tea gardens. Four years (March 2018-September 2022) of surveys recorded a total of 6,704 individuals that belong to 74 species of 20 families of vascular epiphytes. Considering life forms, the majority of them are holoepiphytes (62.16%), followed by hemiepiphytes (20.27%), accidental epiphytes (13.51%), and facultative epiphytes (2.7%). The predominantly recorded families are Orchidaceae (21 spp.), Araceae (11 spp.), Apocyanaceae with six species, and Piperaceae & Pteridaceae with three species each. Albizia lebbeck (L.) Benth. hosts a maximum of 737 vascular epiphytic assemblages (VEAs), whereas, Gmelina arborea Roxb. has a minimum of 450 VEAs. Vascular epiphytes were also studied for their host specificity using interpolation and extrapolation analyses. The findings of the study show that vascular epiphytic assemblage upon the shade trees of the tea garden has a remarkably high potential to contribute toward epiphytic diversity of this region other than forest and contribute significant ecological impacts.
