2. Virulence, sporulation, and elicitin production in three clonal lineages of Phytophthora ramorum

Phytophthora ramorum populations are clonal and consist of three lineages. Recent studies have shown that the clonal lineages may have varying degrees of aggressiveness on some host species, such as Quercus rubra. In this study, we examined virulence, sporulation and elicitin production of five P. ramorum isolates from each of the three clonal lineages. Virulence (lesion size) and sporulation (sporangia production) were determined on wound-inoculated detached leaves of Rhododendron catawbiense ‘Nova Zembla’. Tay–Sachs disease is a rare recessively inherited disease of brain lipid metabolism. It is one of the best known lysosomal storage diseases because of its striking clinical features, its predilection for certain population subgroups, and the application of carrier screening for this disease in the first successful effort of large-scale genetic disease prevention. Once its molecular pathogenesis became known, a family of diseases was discovered having in common nerve cell storage of GM2 ganglioside but differing in their clinical aspects and molecular DNA abnormalities. Effective treatment remains elusive, but the availability of animal models now permits trials of novel approaches to nervous system repair in Tay–Sachs and related forms of GM2 gangliosidosis.
