Further investigation of fast ion effects on turbulence and transport in the fast ion regulated enhancement (FIRE) mode discharge (Han et al 2022 Nature 609 269–275) was performed in this work as a continuation of a previous study (Kim et al 2023 Nucl. Fusion 63 124001) that showed that the dominant turbulence suppression mechanism by fast ions is the dilution effect in the FIRE mode discharge. The current study includes (i) the impact of the fast ion relevant mode observed in the simulation of thermal energy flux, (ii) dilution effects by fast ions compared to dilution effects by other species, and (iii) fast ion effects on electron-scale turbulence. First, nonlinear gyrokinetic simulation results show that turbulence is significantly suppressed even without the fast ion relevant mode, indicating that the impact of this mode on thermal transport is not significant in this discharge. Second, further analysis on the dilution effects shows the three following results: Turbulence is not completely suppressed by the reduced main ion density fraction effect due to impurities; the reduction in energy flux can be limited by a certain impurity mode that is destabilized by a high impurity density gradient from adjusting the main ion density gradient; electrons can contribute to turbulence suppression through the main ion density gradient change, although this effect is less significant compared to other species. Third, we observe that two fast ion effects can influence the linear growth rate of the electron-scale turbulence mode. The growth rate decreases by an increase in ${\beta _*}\left( { \equiv \left( { - 8\pi /{B^2}} \right){\text{d}}p/{\text{d}}r} \right)$ and increases by dilution effects, suggesting that fast ion effects on electron-scale turbulence can differ depending on the operation scenario, such as the fast ion fraction. The comprehensive analysis performed in this study can enhance our understanding of fast ion physics, required for burning plasma operation in the future.

The JET Deuterium-Tritium-Experiment Campaign 2 (DTE2) has demonstrated the highest-ever fusion energy production. To forecast the transport dynamics within these discharges, the TGLF and NEO models within the TGYRO transport code were employed. A critical development in this study is the new quasilinear transport model, TGLF-SAT2, specifically designed to resolve discrepancies identified in JET deuterium discharges. This model accurately describes the saturated three-dimensional (3D) fluctuation spectrum, aligning closely with a database of nonlinear CGYRO turbulence simulations, thereby enhancing the predictive accuracy of TGYRO simulations. In validating against the JET DTE2 discharges across two primary operating scenarios, TGYRO effectively predicted the temperature profiles within a broad radial window ( ρ ∼ 0.2–0.85), though with minor ion temperature discrepancies near the core. However, a consistent underprediction of electron density profiles by 20% across the simulation domain was noted, indicating areas for future refinement. To achieve a self-consistent steady-state solution based on the JET DTE2 discharges, an integrated modeling workflow TGYRO-STEP within the OMFIT framework was introduced. This workflow iterates among the core transport, the pedestal pressure and the MHD equilibrium, ultimately yielding a converged solution that significantly reduces dependence on experimental boundary conditions for temperature and density profiles. The integrated simulation results show negligible differences in electron density and temperature profiles compared to standalone TGYRO modeling, while the ion temperature profile is lower due to the updated boundary condition in TGYRO-STEP. The application of the TGYRO-STEP workflow to JET DTE2 discharges serves as a crucial test to validate its robustness and highlights its limitations, providing valuable insights for its potential future application in ITER and Fusion Power Plant deuterium and tritium prediction modeling.

A long standing shortfall in the predicted L-mode edge energy transport by reduced quasi-linear models of gyrokinetic turbulent transport has been resolved. The improved model TGLF-SAT2 has higher fidelity to gyrokinetic simulations of the electron-scale contribution to the electron energy transport and the ion-scale flux surface shape dependence of energy transport. The success of TGLF-SAT2 in predicting the L-mode and Ohmic edge profiles is critical to whole pulse simulation and opens the door to prediction of the H-mode power threshold.

It is determined that while heat flux differences between hydrogen and deuterium isotope experiments result from natural differences in carbon impurity content at DIII-D, it is not the origin of the low to high confinement mode (L-H) transition isotope effect. More specifically, a two times larger edge radial electric field in hydrogen compared to deuterium is uncovered and believed to play an important role. The origin of this radial electric field difference is determined to have two possible origins: differences in poloidal rotation and turbulent Reynolds stress in the closed field line region, and increased outer strike point temperatures and space potentials on open field lines. Experimental observations from both profile and turbulence diagnostics are supported by nonlinear gyrokinetic simulations using the code CGYRO. Simulations illustrated heat transport isotope effects in the plasma edge and shear layer resulting from differences in impurity content, electron non-adiabaticity, and main ion mass dependent E × B shear stabilization. Turbulence prediction comparisons from flux-matched CGYRO simulations to experimental measurements including electron temperature, density and velocity fluctuations are found to be in good agreement with available data. A dedicated DIII-D experiment in hydrogen was performed to seed more carbon than naturally occurring, to match deuterium experiments, and possibly reduce the L-H power threshold based on gyro-kinetic predictions. To our surprise, while ion temperature gradient (ITG) turbulence was stabilized, nodiscernible change in L-H power threshold were observed in these special hydrogen experiments. In particular, it is noticed that the edge radial electric field and Reynolds stress were observed as nearly unchanging in the presence of ITG stabilization. These experimental data have enabled a more comprehensive picture of the multitude of isotope effects at play in fusion experiments, and the important potential connection between the confined and unconfined plasma regions in regulating L-H transition dynamics.

The increased low to high confinement mode (L to H-mode) power threshold $P_\mathrm{LH}$ in DIII-D low collisionality hydrogen plasmas (compared to deuterium) is shown to result from lower impurity (carbon) content, consistent with reduced (mass-dependent) physical and chemical sputtering of graphite. Trapped gyro-Landau fluid (TGLF) quasilinear calculations and local non-linear gyrokinetic CGYRO simulations confirm stabilization of ion temperature gradient (ITG) driven turbulence by increased carbon ion dilution as the most important isotope effect. In the plasma edge, electron non-adiabaticity is also predicted to contribute to the isotope dependence of thermal transport and $P_\mathrm{LH}$ , however its effect is subdominant compared to changes from impurity isotopic behavior. This L-H power threshold reduction with increasing carbon content at low collisionality is in stark contrast to high collisionality results, where additional impurity content appears to increase the power necessary for H-mode access.

This letter provides a new physical insight into the fast ion effects on turbulence in plasmas having a high fast ion fraction and peaked fast ion density profile. We elucidate turbulence stabilization mechanisms by fast ions that result in internal transport barrier formation in the fast ion regulated enhancement mode plasma. Both linear and nonlinear gyrokinetic simulations show that the dominant turbulence suppression mechanisms are the dilution effects. In particular, we find that turbulence can be sufficiently suppressed solely by an inverted main ion density gradient due to fast ions, for the first time. New physical findings reported here improve our understanding of fast ion effects on turbulence, essential for fusion energy production where . Moreover, they will open up a new methodology to control plasma turbulence applicable to a wide range of plasma confinement regimes.

Resonant magnetic perturbations (RMPs) are a leading method for edge localized modes (ELMs) Control in fusion plasmas. However they can also cause a rapid degradation in energy confinement. In this paper we show that the energy confinement in low collisionality (  <  0.3) DIII-D ITER similar shape (ISS) plasmas often recovers after several energy confinement times for RMP amplitudes up to the threshold for ELM suppression. Immediately following the application of the RMP, the plasma stored energy decreases in proportion to the decrease in the line-averaged density during density ‘pump-out’. Later in the discharge confinement recovery is observed in the thermal ion channel and is correlated with the increase in the ion temperature at the top of the H-mode pedestal. A correlation between the inverse scale length of the ion temperature () and the shearing rate at the top of the pedestal is seen during the confinement recovery phase. Transport analysis reveals that the confinement improvement in the ion channel results from the self-similarity in the ion temperature profiles in the plasma core combined with the observed increase in in the plasma edge following density pump-out. In contrast the electron temperature scale length () remains essentially unchanged in response to the application of the RMP. At significantly higher RMP levels the edge shearing rate and does not increase and the confinement does not recover following density pump-out. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

One modeling framework for integrated tasks (OMFIT) is a comprehensive integrated modeling framework which has been developed to enable physics codes to interact in complicated workflows, and support scientists at all stages of the modeling cycle. The OMFIT development follows a unique bottom-up approach, where the framework design and capabilities organically evolve to support progressive integration of the components that are required to accomplish physics goals of increasing complexity. OMFIT provides a workflow for easily generating full kinetic equilibrium reconstructions that are constrained by magnetic and motional Stark effect measurements, and kinetic profile information that includes fast-ion pressure modeled by a transport code. It was found that magnetic measurements can be used to quantify the amount of anomalous fast-ion diffusion that is present in DIII-D discharges, and provide an estimate that is consistent with what would be needed for transport simulations to match the measured neutron rates. OMFIT was used to streamline edge-stability analyses, and evaluate the effect of resonant magnetic perturbation (RMP) on the pedestal stability, which have been found to be consistent with the experimental observations. The development of a five-dimensional numerical fluid model for estimating the effects of the interaction between magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) and microturbulence, and its systematic verification against analytic models was also supported by the framework. OMFIT was used for optimizing an innovative high-harmonic fast wave system proposed for DIII-D. For a parallel refractive index , the conditions for strong electron-Landau damping were found to be independent of launched and poloidal angle. OMFIT has been the platform of choice for developing a neural-network based approach to efficiently perform a non-linear multivariate regression of local transport fluxes as a function of local dimensionless parameters. Transport predictions for thousands of DIII-D discharges showed excellent agreement with the power balance calculations across the whole plasma radius and over a broad range of operating regimes. Concerning predictive transport simulations, the framework made possible the design and automation of a workflow that enables self-consistent predictions of kinetic profiles and the plasma equilibrium. It is found that the feedback between the transport fluxes and plasma equilibrium can significantly affect the kinetic profiles predictions. Such a rich set of results provide tangible evidence of how bottom-up approaches can potentially provide a fast track to integrated modeling solutions that are functional, cost-effective, and in sync with the research effort of the community. A new ‘Super H-mode’ regime is predicted, which enables pedestal height and predicted fusion performance substantially higher than for H-mode operation. This new regime is predicted to exist by the EPED pedestal model, which calculates criticality constraints for peeling–ballooning and kinetic ballooning modes, and combines them to predict the pedestal height and width. EPED usually predicts a single (‘H-mode’) pedestal solution for each set of input parameters, however, in strongly shaped plasmas above a critical density, multiple pedestal solutions are found, including the standard ‘H-mode’ solution, and a ‘Super H-Mode’ solution at substantially larger pedestal height and width. The Super H-mode regime is predicted to be accessible by controlling the trajectory of the density, and to increase fusion performance for ITER, as well as for DEMO designs with strong shaping. A set of experiments on DIII-D has identified the predicted Super H-mode regime, and finds pedestal height and width, and their variation with density, in good agreement with theoretical predictions from the EPED model. The very high pedestal enables operation at high global beta and high confinement, including the highest normalized beta achieved on DIII-D with a quiescent edge. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
