Regimes of operation in tokamaks that are devoid of large edge localised modes have to be better understood to extrapolate their applicability to reactor-relevant devices. This paper describes non-linear extended magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations that use an experimental equilibrium from an enhanced D-alpha (EDA) H-mode in ASDEX Upgrade. Linear ideal MHD analysis indicates that the operational point lies slightly inside of the stable region. The non-linear simulations with the visco-resistive extended MHD code, JOREK, sustain non-axisymmetric perturbations that are linearly most unstable with toroidal mode numbers of n = { 6 … 9 } , but non-linearly higher and lower n become driven and the low-n become dominant. The poloidal mode velocity during the linear phase is found to correspond to the expected velocity for resistive ballooning modes. The perturbations that exist in the simulations have somewhat smaller poloidal wavenumbers ( k θ ∼ 0.1 – 0.5 c m − 1 ) than the experimental expectations for the quasi-coherent mode in EDA, and cause non-negligible transport in both the heat and particle channels. In the transition from linear to non-linear phase, the mode frequency chirps down from approximately 35 kHz to 13 kHz, which corresponds approximately to the lower end of frequencies that are typically observed in EDA H-modes in ASDEX Upgrade.

We present a non-parametric inference of impurity transport coefficients by using charge exchange recombination spectroscopy measurements of Ne X, Ne VIII, O VIII, and C VI lines. Due to their close atomic numbers, neon, oxygen and carbon impurity ions are assumed to have the same diffusion coefficient D and convection velocity v. Unlike conventional techniques that modulate or perturb the impurity contents, we employ a quasi-stationary plasma with static impurity profiles. Since the ratio of v to D only describes the equilibrated profile of the sum of all impurity charge states, steady-state measurements can still decouple D and v if different charge states are simultaneously observed. We have formulated a non-parametric analysis framework based on the Bayesian probability theory and conducted transport coefficient measurements for a Type III ELMy H-mode plasma at ASDEX Upgrade. The charge exchange reactions with the background neutrals, which are known to affect the impurity charge state balance, are taken into account by introducing additional free parameters. While D at the pedestal is close to the neoclassical level ( < 1 m s-2), a large diffusion coefficient and a strong outward convection are inferred right inside the pedestal top., This work has been carried out within the framework of the EUROfusion Consortium and has received funding from the Euratom research and training programme 2014–2018 and 2019–2020 under Grant Agreement No. 633053.

An overview of recent results obtained at the tokamak ASDEX Upgrade (AUG) is given. A work flow for predictive profile modelling of AUG discharges was established which is able to reproduce experimental H-mode plasma profiles based on engineering parameters only. In the plasma center, theoretical predictions on plasma current redistribution by a dynamo effect were confirmed experimentally. For core transport, the stabilizing effect of fast ion distributions on turbulent transport is shown to be important to explain the core isotope effect and improves the description of hollow low-Z impurity profiles. The L–H power threshold of hydrogen plasmas is not affected by small helium admixtures and it increases continuously from the deuterium to the hydrogen level when the hydrogen concentration is raised from 0 to 100%. One focus of recent campaigns was the search for a fusion relevant integrated plasma scenario without large edge localised modes (ELMs). Results from six different ELM-free confinement regimes are compared with respect to reactor relevance: ELM suppression by magnetic perturbation coils could be attributed to toroidally asymmetric turbulent fluctuations in the vicinity of the separatrix. Stable improved confinement mode plasma phases with a detached inner divertor were obtained using a feedback control of the plasma β. The enhanced Dα H-mode regime was extended to higher heating power by feedback controlled radiative cooling with argon. The quasi-coherent exhaust regime was developed into an integrated scenario at high heating power and energy confinement, with a detached divertor and without large ELMs. Small ELMs close to the separatrix lead to peeling-ballooning stability and quasi continuous power exhaust. Helium beam density fluctuation measurements confirm that transport close to the separatrix is important to achieve the different ELM-free regimes. Based on separatrix plasma parameters and interchange-drift-Alfvén turbulence, an analytic model was derived that reproduces the experimentally found important operational boundaries of the density limit and between L- and H-mode confinement. Feedback control for the X-point radiator (XPR) position was established as an important element for divertor detachment control. Stable and detached ELM-free phases with H-mode confinement quality were obtained when the XPR was moved 10 cm above the X-point. Investigations of the plasma in the future flexible snow-flake divertor of AUG by means of first SOLPS-ITER simulations with drifts activated predict beneficial detachment properties and the activation of an additional strike point by the drifts. The high-field side high-density (HFSHD) region at ASDEX Upgrade (AUG) is a well-documented phenomenon leading to a dense plasma in the inner divertor region that expands upwards to the midplane, resulting in poloidally asymmetric scrape-off layer density profiles. This work investigates, via simulation and experiment, whether the HFSHD at the midplane leads to hollow density profiles at the high-field side. Using the frequency-modulated continuous-wave O-mode reflectometer at AUG, experimental evidence has been found of reflection patterns compatible with a hollow density profile that are reproduced by 1D full-wave simulations. Furthermore, this work assesses the uncertainties in the density profile reconstruction as a consequence of the inverted gradient, showing that the presence of an HFSHD may lead to an overestimation of the density in the confined region.

Tokamak operational regimes with small edge localized modes (ELMs) could be a solution to the problem of large transient heat loads in future fusion reactors because they provide quasi-continuous exhaust while keeping a good plasma confinement. A ballooning mode mechanism near the last closed flux surface (LCFS) governed by an interplay of the pressure gradient and the magnetic shear there has been proposed for small ELMs in high density ASDEX Upgrade and TCV discharges. In this manuscript we explore different factors relevant for plasma edge stability in a wide range of edge safety factors by changing the connection length between the good and the bad curvature side. Simultaneously this influences the stabilizing effect of the local magnetic shear close to the LCFS as well as the $E \times B$ flow shear. Ideal ballooning stability calculations with the HELENA code reveal that small ELM plasmas are indeed unstable against ballooning modes very close to the LCFS but can exhibit second ballooning stability in the steep gradient region which correlates with enhanced confinement. We also present first non-linear simulations of small ELM regimes with the JOREK code including the $E \times B$ shear which indeed develop ballooning like fluctuations in the high triangularity limit. In the region where the small ELMs originate the dimensionless parameters are very similar in our investigated discharges and in a reactor, making this regime the ideal exhaust scenario for a future reactor.

The capabilities of the newly installed divertor Thomson Scattering (DTS) diagnostic (Kurzan et al 2021 J. Inst. 16 C09012) at ASDEX Upgrade (AUG) have been demonstrated by measuring 2D electron densities n e and temperatures T e from attached to fully detached divertor conditions in L- and H-mode. The collected dataset is a breakthrough for divertor studies at AUG in which such measurements have been so far missing. Besides highlighting the strengths and limits of the DTS system, this work provides confirmations and new insights into detachment physics. The transition between partial and pronounced detachment correlates with a 2D redistribution of the electron density from the inner to the outer divertor in both L- and H-mode. In pronounced detachment, a strong parallel pressure gradient could be confirmed throughout the complete SOL. Finally, measurements of n e and T e of a stable X-point radiator revealed local temperatures as low as 1 eV within the confined plasma, whereas the pressure is shown to be constant on closed field lines.

Gas puff modulation experiments are performed at ASDEX Upgrade in L-mode plasmas. We model the discharge with the ASTRA transport code in order to determine transport coefficients outside of a normalized radius of ρ pol = 0.95. The experimental data is consistent with a range of particle diffusivities and pinch velocities of the order of D = (0.20 ± 0.13) m2 s−1 and v = (−1 ± 2) m s−1, respectively. The electron temperature response caused by the gas modulation permits to estimate also that heat diffusivity χ e increases almost linearly when collisionality rises due to fuelling. The fuelling particle flux is amplified by recycling, overcompensating losses.

The thermal helium beam diagnostic at ASDEX Upgrade is used to infer the electron density n e and temperature T e in the scrape-off layer and the pedestal region from the emission of visible lines of the locally injected helium. The link between n e and T e and the emission is provided by a collisional radiative model, which delivers the evolution of the populations of the relevant excited states as the He atoms travel through the plasma. A computationally efficient method with just three effective states is shown to provide a good approximation of the population dynamics. It removes an artificial rise of T e at the plasma edge when using a simple static model. Furthermore, the re-absorption of the vacuum ultra-violet resonance lines has been introduced as an additional excitation mechanism being mainly important in the region close to the injection point. This extra excitation leads to a much better fit of the measured line ratios in this region for larger puff rates.

Future fusion reactors require a safe, steady state divertor operation. The required detached operation is, in tokamaks with metal walls, usually achieved by seeding of impurities, such as nitrogen. With strong seeding levels, the dominant radiation is emitted from a small, poloidally localized volume inside the confined region, in the vicinity of the X-point. The location of the radiating volume is observed to vary relative to the X-point depending on seeding and power levels, i.e. depending on the degree of detachment. At the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak, the position of the radiator relative to the X-point can be controlled in real time by a modulation of the nitrogen puff level. At a certain height of the radiator above the X-point, an ELM-suppressed regime is observed with minimal reduction of confinement. While the control of the X-point radiator already allows operation in full detachment at a dissipated power fraction of around 95 %, which is required for a future reactor and was previously never achieved in a controlled way, such an ELM-suppressed regime additionally eliminates the challenge of the transient, intolerably high heat fluxes by ELMs. Both requirements are met in the presented regime while maintaining a high energy confinement at high density.

It has been experimentally observed that at ASDEX Upgrade (AUG) plasmas at relatively high shaping, an increase of gas fuelling corresponds to an increase of the frequency and intensity of the type-I edge localised modes (ELMs). At high enough fuelling, the plasma enters the quasi continuous exhaust (QCE) regime. We have performed ideal ballooning n → ∞ stability analysis on four AUG discharges, comparing the type-I ELM dominated phases, with the phases that are in the QCE regime. The results of this study show that as the gas puff increases, the plasma gets more ballooning unstable in the pedestal region, especially very close to the separatrix, at the pedestal bottom. On the contrary, in the middle of the pedestal, the discharges are more ballooning stable. Here the locally negative magnetic shear has a stabilising effect on ballooning modes, allowing access to the second stability region. Our analysis of the ballooning stability and the confinement factor H98 suggest that with optimisation of the pedestal shape, good confinement without type-I ELMs can be achieved. Necessary ingredients are that the region of the highest pressure gradient is not ideal ballooning limited, while the pedestal bottom is ballooning unstable. Ideal stability analysis of 36 simulated ITER profiles shows that, similarly to the experimental cases from AUG, a high pedestal top pressure can be maintained concomitant with a ballooning instability at the pedestal bottom, making QCE a promising scenario.

Poloidal asymmetries of the propagation velocity of density fluctuations perpendicular to the magnetic field measured with Doppler reflectometry have been reported in several magnetic confinement plasma devices. Careful analysis of a large variety of different low confinement mode plasma scenarios performed at the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak does not reveal such an asymmetry outside the uncertainties of the evaluation process of the measurement data. The perpendicular velocity is investigated between mid-radius and the plasma edge and follows the poloidal dependence of the E × B drift velocity regardless of the probed turbulence structure size. Compared to measurements of a charge exchange recombination spectroscopy diagnostic this points towards a significantly smaller phase velocity than the E × B drift velocity. The analysis technique is presented in a representative discharge together with a sensitivity study of the impact of density, magneto hydrodynamic equilibrium and diagnostic alignment on the interpretation of the measured Doppler shift using ray tracing and thus on poloidal asymmetries. Three more highly different plasma scenarios with poloidally symmetric velocity profiles are shown.

H-mode density shoulder: Update from AUG, TCV and JET experiments.

During the last years a pellet based system for a feedback controlled core density fuelling has been developed at the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak, making it a device most suited for the investigation of the reactor relevant high-density regime in an appropriate configuration. Efforts have proven an adequately applied pellet actuator enables safe and reversible access to core plasma densities as intended in current reactor designs and even beyond. From the analysis of a wide range of different plasma scenarios it becomes apparent the beneficial increase of confinement with density saturates when approaching the Greenwald density. When taking this into account properly, it emerged for standard configurations the energy confinement can be sustained when increasing the density. However, the surplus confinement by different means like impurity seeding or strong shaping cannot be fully preserved. Presumably this can be attributed to a yet not adequately controlled separatrix density.

An H-mode plasma state free of edge-localized mode (ELM), close to the L-H transition with clear density and temperature pedestal has been observed both at the Joint European Torus (JET) and at the ASDEX Upgrade (AUG) tokamaks usually identified by a low frequency (LFO, 1-2 kHz), m=1, n=0 oscillation of the magnetics and the modulation of pedestal profiles. The regime at JET is referred to as M-mode while at AUG as intermediate phase or I-phase. This contribution aims at a comparative analysis of these phenomena in terms of the density and temperature pedestal properties, the magnetic oscillations and symmetries. Lithium beam emission spectroscopy (Li-BES) and reflectometer measurements at JET and AUG show that the M-mode and the I-phase modulates the plasma edge density. A high frequency oscillation of the magnetics and the density at the pedestal is also associated with both the M-mode and the I-phase, and its power is modulated with the LFO frequency. The power modulation happens simultaneously in every Mirnov coil signal where it can be detected. The bursts of the magnetic signals and the density at the pedestal region are followed by the flattening of the density profile, and by a radially outward propagating density pulse in the scrape-off layer (SOL). The analysis of the helium line ratio spectroscopy (He-BES) signals at AUG revealed that the electron temperature is modulated in phase with the density, thus the I-phase modulates the pressure profile gradient. This analysis gave opportunity to compare Li-BES and He-BES density profiles at different locations suggesting a toroidal and poloidal symmetry of the density modulation. The presented results indicate that the regimes, the AUG I-phase and the JET M-mode, exhibit similar characteristics, which leads to the conclusion that the regimes are likely the same., Comment: 26 pages, 14 figures

The thermal helium beam diagnostic at ASDEX Upgrade can access the whole plasma edge region simultaneously with a high spatiotemporal resolution. Manifold dynamics of plasma edge transport is observed for different plasma confinement regimes, comprising L- and H-mode scenarios with type-I and small ELMs as well as ELM free EDA regimes. The measurements show that the plasma dynamics in the confined region close to the separatrix is often dominated by regular high frequency modes (10–100 kHz), whereas filaments with an intermittent occurrence rate of 0.1–2 kHz dominate in particular the far scrape-off layer (SOL). The comparison among different regimes shows a similar filamentary activity between L-mode and inter-ELM H-mode phases. An increased filamentary activity in H-mode, however, is found for rising densities n ∕ n GW . This is the case for the regime of quasi continuous exhaust (QCE) with three times higher filament velocities compared to a clean inter-ELM H-mode.

At least the far scrape-off layer of magnetically confined fusion plasmas transport is intermittent and non-diffusive as observed by the appearance of plasma filaments. Transport codes using effective diffusion coefficients are still the main workhorse investigating the scrape-off layer and divertor regions. An effective perpendicular diffusion coefficient for intermittent filamentary dominated perpendicular transport in the scrape-off layer is motivated by the telegraph equation, describing an exponentially decaying correlated random walk. On short time scales, the telegraph equation describes the ballistic transport of filamentary structures with a typical velocity ub and correlation time τ. In stationary conditions, the corresponding diffusion coefficient is given by [Formula: see text]. Since ub and τ can be determined experimentally, it is proposed to use [Formula: see text] as an input for modeling or for interpretation of perpendicular transport in the far scrape-off layer.

Blob transport properties in the plasma edge in the presence and absence of radio-frequency (RF) convective cells are compared. For the first time, the interactions between RF convective cells and intermittent plasma blobs in the scrape-off layer (SOL) are observed with gas puff imaging in the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak. It is found that the RF convective cells induce a sheared flow in the far SOL, which is able to stretch, distort and even split the blobs poloidally. The observed phenomena indicate that an externally generated sheared flow in the SOL can be considered as a method to modify blob transport in a favorable way.

Within the EUROfusion MST1 work package, a series of experiments has been conducted on AUG and TCV devices to disentangle the role of plasma fueling and plasma shape for the onset of small ELM regimes. On both devices, small ELM regimes with high confinement are achieved if and only if two conditions are fulfilled at the same time. Firstly, the plasma density at the separatrix must be large enough (), leading to a pressure profile flattening at the separatrix, which stabilizes type-I ELMs. Secondly, the magnetic configuration has to be close to a double null (DN), leading to a reduction of the magnetic shear in the extreme vicinity of the separatrix. In ASDEX Upgrade with full-tungsten wall, boronization is an important tool to control tungsten sources and allow reliable operation at low collisionality. The duration of the beneficial effects is limited by the erosion of the boron layer, in particular on the tungsten ion-cyclotron antenna limiters. We report results from experiments exploring injection boron-rich powders in tokamak plasmas as a way to replenish boron coating and extend the lifetime of boronization effects. Pure boron and boron nitride powders were introduced gravitationally in plasma discharges at rates up to 60 mg/s for durations up to 3 s. Boron injection with cumulative amounts >100 mg appeared to improve wall conditions similarly to boronization, with indications of reduced influx of oxygen and tungsten from the antenna limiter. Moreover, cumulative injection of 340 mg of B appeared sufficient to enable successful execution of low collisionality scenarios critically relying on freshly boronized walls.

The access to fast measurements, i.e. Δt ≈ 100 µs, of the ions and the electrons during an entire edge localized cycle (ELM) reveals asymmetries in the recovery of the maximum edge gradients. Different magnetic fluctuations are found to correlate with the saturation of the edge ion temperature (Ti), electrons temperature (Te) and density (ne) gradients. In particular, while ∇Ti and ∇ne clamp roughly 3.0 ms after the ELM-crash together with the onset of mid-frequency (f ≲ 50 kHz) magnetic fluctuations, ∇Te recovers to the pre-ELM conditions only after 7.0 ms and saturates with the appearance of high frequency fluctuations (f ≈ 200 kHz). The effect of electron temperature gradient modes (ETGs) and of energy losses induced by ionization of neutrals are discussed as possible reasons for the delayed recovery of ∇Te. The onset and the suppression of ETGs qualitatively follow the requirements of an increased electron heat transport. However, gyro-kinetic simulations are necessary to quantify the impact of ETGs. On the other hand, the impact of the neutral ionization during the density build-up as an electron energy loss channel is measured to be small compared to the total electron energy. A : A new multichannel X-mode reflectometer diagnostic (RIC) was recently installed in ASDEX Upgrade (AUG) to provide the electron density profiles in front of an ion cyclotron range of frequencies antenna. The diagnostic was designed to measure density profiles up to 2 ⇥ 10 19 m 3 in the typical 1.5-2.7 T magnetic fields of AUG. Profiles can be measured every 25 µs simultaneously in 3 di erent poloidal positions. The main objective of this work is to assess the measurement capabilities of the RIC diagnostic for the scrape-o layer density profiles. RIC density profiles are compared to radial profiles from lithium beam emission spectroscopy and Thomson scattering over a wide variety of plasma conditions. Although a good agreement between the di erent diagnostics is generally found at low discharge densities, RIC measurements often show steeper profiles at high discharge densities, particularly at low outer wall clearance. In addition, the location of the start of X-mode upper cuto reflection is determined as well as the plasma density at the first cuto layer. The imaging heavy ion beam probe (i-HIBP) developed at the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak is a new diagnostic concept for investigations at the edge of high temperature plasmas. By means of a heavy alkali beam injector, a neutral primary beam of an energy of 70 keV is injected into the fusion plasma, where it is ionized generating a fan of secondary beams. These are deflected by the magnetic field of the tokamak and intersect a scintillator plate in the limiter shadow of the tokamak. The light pattern on the scintillator detected with a high speed camera contains radial information on the density, electrostatic potential and the magnetic field in the edge region of the plasma. For the design of the i-HIBP, a detailed beam model including the 3D tokamak magnetic field and beam attenuation effects for cesium and rubidium atoms is developed in order to find the optimum injection scheme within the limited space of the tokamak environment for maximum signal intensities. Based on the optimized injection, the arrangement of the injector outside the vacuum-vessel and the detailed design of the optical in-vessel system is determined. Helmholtz Association grant no. Interpretation of the Electron Cyclotron Emission (ECE) and ECE Imaging (ECE-I) measurements concerning the measurement position and the radiation temperature (Trad) at the plasma edge is associated with significant uncertainty. Various limitations such as low and high-density limits, relativistic and Doppler shift-broadening, mode overlap were identified in the past. Here, we analyse the influence of density profile variation onto the radiation temperature in H-mode plasmas at ASDEX Upgrade tokamak. We show that, in the region of steep gradients, the variation of the density profile leads to an outward-shift of the measurement position, towards lower Trad. The analysis is extended towards the study of the contribution of the ordinary mode (O-mode) emission to the measured Trad at the plasma edge. With this analysis, we show the qualitative agreement between experimental observations and modeling when taking into account the O-mode contribution to the ECE measurements. All of these effects are assessed via the Electron Cyclotron Radiation transport forward model that is now routinely used to model the response of the ECE-I and ECE systems in different plasma scenarios.

The connection between midplane and divertor conditions is studied on ASDEX Upgrade (AUG) for H-mode scenarios. H-mode discharges with variations in fuelling, heating power and impurity seeding are analysed, enabling to disentangle their impact on the evolution of midplane density profiles. The O-mode reflectometer installed on AUG provides unique insights on the midplane density profiles thanks to the ability to measure simultaneously at the high-field-side (HFS) and the low-field-side (LFS). At the inner divertor, with the onset of detachment, a region of high density is formed (HFS high density front, HFSHD) that expands into the HFS midplane, leading to strong poloidal asymmetries in the main chamber scrape-off layer (SOL) density. A good agreement is observed between the evolution of the density profiles at the midplane and that of the divertor volume density confirming the strong influence of divertor conditions on the midplane density profiles at the HFS. Our results confirm the existence of a relationship between plasma confinement, the shift in the midplane LFS density profile and the presence of the HFSHD with respect to changes in seeding and fuelling. It is established that the separatrix density at the LFS is better correlated with the neutral pressure at the outer target while the HFS SOL density follows the neutral pressure at the inner divertor. A comprehensive characterisation of the edge-localised mode (ELM) evolution at the midplane and divertor is performed demonstrating that also during the ELM cycle the divertor conditions have a strong effect on the SOL density at the midplane. The most striking result is the observation of a HFSHD at the HFS midplane just after the ELM crash associated with strong inner divertor detachment.

The search for scenarios in which tolerable power exhaust is combined with good confinement must involve high separatrix densities. We present here the first infrared thermography measurements at ASDEX Upgrade in a high density, high confinement H-mode regime in which no type-I ELMs are present. This regime was formerly called type-II ELM or small ELM regime to distinguish it from type-I ELMs. We report on a broadening of the power fall-off length in this regime of up to a factor of four compared to low density inter type-I ELM conditions. This broadening is correlated to an increased filament detection rate as well as an increase in the pressure close to the separatrix. The broadening of the fall-off length decreases the peak heat flux, while the filaments lead to a quasi-continuous transport into the scrape-off layer and onto the divertor.

We compare various diagnostics characterizing an ASDEX Upgrade upper single-null discharge to EMC3-EIRENE simulations now including volumetric recombination and main chamber plasma-wall interaction but not yet drifts. The discharge is in a small-ELM regime and is approaching detachment due to a density ramp and nitrogen seeding. Time/ELM averaged upstream density, electron and ion temperature measurements as well as downstream ion saturation current, electron temperature and power flux measurements match the simulation within the error bars before and after reaching detachment, qualifying the code for this regime. Although the Ion Cyclotron Resonance Heating (ICRH) antenna limiters are 35 mm away from the separatrix, i.e. ten times the typical near-SOL power fall-off length λnearq = 3.8 mm, they receive power fluxes of several hundreds of kW exceeding the ones to the outer target in the detached phase and strongly contribute to the particle fueling. This is explained by a substantially larger far-SOL power fall-off length λfarq = 25 mm possibly caused by the small ELMs in the detached phase and the occurrence of a density shoulder.

The relation between the macroscopic input power required at ASDEX Upgrade to access the H-mode Pthr and the microscopic E x B shear has been investigated via fast charge-exchange recombination spectroscopy (CXRS) measurements at various toroidal magnetic fields, different electron densities, and in both hydrogen and deuterium plasmas. For the H-mode onset, a threshold in the v E x B minimum, an approximation of the E x B shear, has been found. This identifies v E x B and not Er as the important player for the L-H transition. A database of measurements including CXRS, Doppler reflectometry measurements and comparison to neoclassical approximations shows a threshold v E x B of (6.7 ± 1.0) km/s ranging over a factor of three in Pthr. Using these findings, a simple derivation of the Pthr scaling is proposed giving a physics interpretation of the Bt, density and surface dependence of Pthr. An analysis of ASDEX Upgrade plasma is performed to understand the near SOL transport and develop the predictive basis for the electron temperature gradient, All of the unseeded L- and H-mode attached and N seeded H-mode discharges studied are shown that the analyzed ASDEX Upgrade dataset is in the conduction-limited regime, i.e. the parallel transport in the near SOL is dominated by Spitzer–Harm conduction. By studying a H–L back transition, it is shown that the 'bifurcation' in the core plasma between H- and L-mode regimes also exists in the perpendicular transport in the near SOL region. Through power balance and the Spitzer–Harm condution, the SOL perpendicular transport can be derived as with For detached plasmas, the SOL upstream electron profile is found to be broader than an equivalent attached plasma under certain conditions. By comparing with global energy confinement, it is found that the discharges with broadened profiles also have degraded confinement, while those with unchanged profiles have similar confinement to attached plasma. The widening of the SOL is also found to coincide with the dropping of upstream temperature. Finally, comparisons of a N seeded H-mode with high pedestal top pressure and an I-mode plasma with an L-mode reference are both found to break the generally observed correlation between the T e SOL decay length and the pedestal top pressure. Thus, the relationship is shown to be non-causal and must instead be due to similar dependences on other plasma parameters. This means that higher global energy confinement is not necessarily imply larger heat flux in the divertor and motivates the search for regimes that optimize both. The implications of these results for SOL transport are discussed.

The injection of boron (B) and boron nitride (BN) powders into ASDEX Upgrade H-mode discharges have demonstrated effective control of tungsten influx in low density/collisionality operational regimes, similar to conventional boronization methods. Sub-mm powder particles are gravitationally accelerated into the upper edge of a lower single null H-mode plasma with a boundary shape roughly conforming to the shape of the poloidal midplane limiters. Visible spectroscopy measurements at one of the outer limiter showed increases in both B and N signal levels, as well as elevated B levels in the divertor, and an increase in total radiated power by greater than a factor of two during BN injection. Globally the BN injection improved energy confinement by 10%–20%, associated with improvements in pedestal performance similar to gaseous N injection. Following conditioning discharges with B powder injection, three low gas-fueling discharges with magnetic perturbations for ELM suppression were successfully conducted. These first results suggest that the application of B containing powders can be used to both improve plasma performance in real-time, and to improve overall wall conditions for subsequent discharges.

One main programme topic at the ASDEX Upgrade all-metal-wall tokamak is development of a high-density regime with central densities at reactor grade level while retaining high-confinement properties. This required development of appropriate control techniques capable of coping with the pellet tool, a powerful means of fuelling but one which presented challenges to the control system for handling of related perturbations. Real-time density profile control was demonstrated, raising the core density well above the Greenwald density while retaining the edge density in order to avoid confinement losses. Recently, a new model-based approach was implemented that allows direct control of the central density. Investigations focussed first on the N-seeding scenario owing to its proven potential to yield confinement enhancements. Combining pellets and N seeding was found to improve the divertor buffering further and enhance the operational range accessible. For core densities up to about the Greenwald density, a clear improvement with respect to the non-seeding reference was achieved; however, at higher densities this benefit is reduced. This behaviour is attributed to recurrence of an outward shift of the edge density profile, resulting in a reduced peeling-ballooning stability. This is similar to the shift seen during strong gas puffing, which is required to prevent impurity influx in ASDEX Upgrade. First tests indicate that highly-shaped plasma configurations like the ITER base-line scenario, respond very well to pellet injection, showing efficient fuelling with no measurable impact on the edge density profile.

In addition to the relaxation of the pedestal, edge localised modes (ELMs) introduce changes to the divertor and scrape-off layer (SOL) conditions. Their impact on the inter-ELM pedestal recovery is investigated, with emphasis on the electron density (ne) evolution. The typical ELM cycle occurring in an exemplary ASDEX Upgrade discharge interval at moderate applied gas puff and heating power is characterised, utilising several divertor, SOL and pedestal diagnostics. In the studied discharge interval the inner divertor target is detached before the ELM crash, while the outer target is attached. The particles and power expelled by the ELM crash lead to a reattachment of the inner target plasma. After the ELM crash, the outer divertor target moves into a high recycling regime with large ne in front of the plate, which is accompanied by high main chamber neutral fluxes. On similar timescales, the inner target fully detaches and the high field side high density region (HFSHD) is formed reaching up to the high field side midplane. This state evolves again to the pre-ELM state, when the main chamber neutral fluxes are reduced later in the ELM cycle. Neither the timescale of the appearance of the HFSHD nor the increase of the main chamber neutral fluxes fit the timescale of the ne pedestal, which is faster. It is found that during the ne pedestal recovery, the magnetic activity at the low field side midplane is strongly reduced indicating a lower level of fluctuations. A rough estimation of the particle flux across the pedestal suggests that the particle flux is reduced in this period. In conclusion, the evolution of the ne pedestal is determined by a combination of neutral fluxes, HFSHD and reduced particle flux across the pedestal. A reduced particle flux explains the fast, experimentally observed reestablishment of the ne pedestal best, whereas neutrals and HFSHD impact on the evolution of the SOL and separatrix conditions. Electron cyclotron emission imaging (ECEI) provides measurements of electron temperature (Te) and its fluctuations (δTe). However, when measuring at the plasma edge, in the steep gradient region, radiation transport effects must be taken into account. It is shown that due to these effects, the scrape-off layer region is not accessible to the ECEI measurements in steady state conditions and that the signal is dominated by the shine-through emission. Transient effects, such as filaments, can change the radiation transport locally, but cannot be distinguished from the shine-through. Local density measurements are essential for the correct interpretation of the electron cyclotron emission, since the density fluctuations influence the temperature measurements at the plasma edge. As an example, a low frequency 8 kHz mode, which causes 10%–15% fluctuations in the signal level of the ECEI, is analysed. The same mode has been measured with the lithium beam emission spectroscopy density diagnostic, and is very well correlated in time with high frequency magnetic fluctuations. With radiation transport modelling of the electron cyclotron radiation in the ECEI geometry, it is shown that the density contributes significantly to the radiation temperature (Trad) and the experimental observations have shown the amplitude modulation in both density and temperature measurements. The poloidal velocity of the low frequency mode measured by the ECEI is 3 km s–1. The calculated velocity of the high frequency mode measured with the magnetic pick-up coils is about 25 km s–1. Addressing the role of scrape off layer filamentary transport is a subject of intense studies in fusion science. Intermittent structures dominate transport in L-Mode and strongly contribute to particle and energy losses in H-mode. The role of convective radial losses has become even more important due to its contribution to the shoulder formation in L-Mode, describing the progressive flattening of the density scrape off layer profile at high density r1- 3s. Investigation of this process revealed the strong relationship between divertor conditions and the upstream profiles, mediated by filaments dynamics which varies according to the downstream conditions. Preliminary investigations suggested that similar mechanisms occur in H-Mode r1s and that filaments contribute the SOL transport in H-mode density limit (HDL) as well r4s. The present contribution will report on results obtained on ASDEXUpgrade and TCV tokamaks, to address the role of filamentary transport in high density regimes both in L- and H-Mode. The combined results enlarge the operational space, from a device with a closed divertor, metallic first wall and cryogenic pumping system to a carbon machine with a completely open divertor. The mechanism of shoulder formation and the role of filaments have been tested against variation of plasma current, magnetic configuration (single and double null plasmas), and divertor neutral densities, through modification of cryopump efficiency. At constant magnetic field the density decay length increases with filament-size independently of the plasma current for both machines in L-mode, consistently with the fact that upstream profiles and divertor neutral pressure exhibit the same trend with normalized Greenwald fraction.

This paper describes the extension of the previous experimental database on density control by pellets and ELM control by RMPs in the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak. A stationary low triangularity plasma is sustained by simultaneous pellet fuelling and RMP ELM control at ion pedestal collisionality of ν ∗i,ped ∼ 0.5. Refuelling of the RMP induced density pump-out requires a pellet rate of Φpel ∼ 0.073 P aux/T t,ped. The duration of refuelling of density pump-out can be minimised to about 3 energy confinement times. Pellet fuelling increases or preserves ion pedestal pressure with respect to unfuelled ELM suppressed/mitigated phase. Pellets cause transition from ELM suppression to ELMy regime: At low triangularity, the first pellet triggers a transition to an ELMy phase but subsequent ELMs are not modulated by pellets. At elevated triangularity, initial pellets trigger ELM-like events but in-between pellets ELM suppression is preserved. In later phase, as density increases the plasma transitions to an ELMy phase similar to low triangularity case.

The plasma shape, in particular the triangularity (δ), impacts on the pedestal stability. A scan of δ including a variation of heating power (P heat) and gas puff was performed to study the behaviour of edge localised modes (ELMs) and the pre-ELM pedestal stability for different plasma shapes. Generally, at higher δ the pedestal top electron density (n e) is enhanced and the ELM repetition frequency (f ELM) is reduced. For all δ, the pedestal top n e is already fully established to its pre-ELM value during the initial recovery phase of the n e pedestal, which takes place immediately after the ELM crash. The lowering of the f ELM with increasing δ is related to longer pedestal recovery phases, especially the last pre-ELM phase with clamped pedestal gradients (after the recovery phases of the n e and electron temperature (T e) pedestal) is extended. In all investigated discharge intervals, the pre-ELM pedestal profiles are in agreement with peeling-ballooning (PB) theory. Over the investigated range of δ, two well-separated f ELM bands are observed in several discharge intervals. Their occurrence is linked to the inter-ELM pedestal stability. In both kinds of ELM cycles the pedestal evolves similarly, however, the 'fast' ELM cycle occurs before the global plasma stored energy (W MHD) increases, which then provides a stabilising effect on the pedestal, extending the inter-ELM period in the case of the 'slow' ELM cycle. At the end of a 'fast' ELM cycle the n e profile is radially shifted inwards relative to the n e profile at the end of a 'slow' ELM cycle, leading to a reduced pressure gradient. The appearance of two f ELM bands suggests that the pedestal becomes more likely PB unstable in certain phases of the inter-ELM evolution. Such a behaviour is possible because the evolution of the global plasma is not rigidly coupled to the evolution of the pedestal structure on the timescales of an ELM cycle.

This paper presents investigations on the role of the edge ion heat flux for transitions from L-mode to H-mode in Alcator C-Mod. Previous results from the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak indicated that a critical value of edge ion heat flux per particle is needed for the transition. Analysis of C-Mod data confirms this result. The edge ion heat flux is indeed found to increase linearly with density at given magnetic field and plasma current. Furthermore, the Alcator C-Mod data indicate that the edge ion heat flux at the L-H transition also increases with magnetic field. Combining the data from Alcator C-Mod and ASDEX Upgrade yields a general expression for the edge ion heat flux at the L-H transition. These results are discussed from the point of view of the possible physics mechanism of the L-H transition. They are also compared to the L-H power threshold scaling and an extrapolation for ITER is given.

The ASDEX Upgrade (AUG) programme, jointly run with the EUROfusion MST1 task force, continues to significantly enhance the physics base of ITER and DEMO. Here, the full tungsten wall is a key asset for extrapolating to future devices. The high overall heating power, flexible heating mix and comprehensive diagnostic set allows studies ranging from mimicking the scrape-off-layer and divertor conditions of ITER and DEMO at high density to fully non-inductive operation (q95 = 5.5, ) at low density. Higher installed electron cyclotron resonance heating power 6 MW, new diagnostics and improved analysis techniques have further enhanced the capabilities of AUG. Stable high-density H-modes with MW m−1 with fully detached strike-points have been demonstrated. The ballooning instability close to the separatrix has been identified as a potential cause leading to the H-mode density limit and is also found to play an important role for the access to small edge-localized modes (ELMs). Density limit disruptions have been successfully avoided using a path-oriented approach to disruption handling and progress has been made in understanding the dissipation and avoidance of runaway electron beams. ELM suppression with resonant magnetic perturbations is now routinely achieved reaching transiently . This gives new insight into the field penetration physics, in particular with respect to plasma flows. Modelling agrees well with plasma response measurements and a helically localised ballooning structure observed prior to the ELM is evidence for the changed edge stability due to the magnetic perturbations. The impact of 3D perturbations on heat load patterns and fast-ion losses have been further elaborated. Progress has also been made in understanding the ELM cycle itself. Here, new fast measurements of and Er allow for inter ELM transport analysis confirming that Er is dominated by the diamagnetic term even for fast timescales. New analysis techniques allow detailed comparison of the ELM crash and are in good agreement with nonlinear MHD modelling. The observation of accelerated ions during the ELM crash can be seen as evidence for the reconnection during the ELM. As type-I ELMs (even mitigated) are likely not a viable operational regime in DEMO studies of 'natural' no ELM regimes have been extended. Stable I-modes up to have been characterised using -feedback. Core physics has been advanced by more detailed characterisation of the turbulence with new measurements such as the eddy tilt angle—measured for the first time—or the cross-phase angle of and fluctuations. These new data put strong constraints on gyro-kinetic turbulence modelling. In addition, carefully executed studies in different main species (H, D and He) and with different heating mixes highlight the importance of the collisional energy exchange for interpreting energy confinement. A new regime with a hollow profile now gives access to regimes mimicking aspects of burning plasma conditions and lead to nonlinear interactions of energetic particle modes despite the sub-Alfvénic beam energy. This will help to validate the fast-ion codes for predicting ITER and DEMO.
