1. Combination of light-driven co-delivery of chemodrugs and plasmonic-induced heat for cancer therapeutics using hybrid protein nanocapsules

Abstract: Abstract Background Improving the water solubility of hydrophobic drugs, increasing their accumulation in tumor tissue and allowing their simultaneous action by different pathways are essential issues for a successful chemotherapeutic activity in cancer treatment. Considering potential clinical application in the future, it will be promising to achieve such purposes by developing new biocompatible hybrid nanocarriers with multimodal therapeutic activity. Results We designed and characterised a hybrid nanocarrier based on human serum albumin/chitosan nanoparticles (HSA/chitosan NPs) able to encapsulate free docetaxel (DTX) and doxorubicin-modified gold nanorods (DOXO-GNRs) to simultaneously exploit the complementary chemotherapeutic activities of both antineoplasic compounds together with the plasmonic optical properties of the embedded GNRs for plasmonic-based photothermal therapy (PPTT). DOXO was assembled onto GNR surfaces following a layer-by-layer (LbL) coating strategy, which allowed to partially control its release quasi-independently release regarding DTX under the use of near infrared (NIR)-light laser stimulation of GNRs. In vitro cytotoxicity experiments using triple negative breast MDA-MB-231 cancer cells showed that the developed dual drug encapsulation approach produces a strong synergistic toxic effect to tumoral cells compared to the administration of the combined free drugs; additionally, PPTT enhances the cytostatic efficacy allowing cell toxicities close to 90% after a single low irradiation dose and keeping apoptosis as the main cell death mechanism. Conclusions This work demonstrates that by means of a rational design, a single hybrid nanoconstruct can simultaneously supply complementary therapeutic strategies to treat tumors and, in particular, metastatic breast cancers with good results making use of its stimuli-responsiveness as well as its inherent physico-chemical properties.

Abstract: Abstract Background Medical transport (MT) professionals are subject to considerable emotional demands due to their involvement in life-or-death situations and their exposure to the serious health problems of their clients. An increase in the demand for MT services has, in turn, increased interest in the study of the psychosocial risk factors affecting the health of workers in this sector. However, research thus far has not distinguished between emergency (EMT) and non-emergency (non-EMT) services, nor between the sexes. Furthermore, little emphasis has been placed on the protective factors involved. The main objective of the present study is to identify any existing differential exposure – for reasons of work setting (EMT and non-EMT) or of gender – to the various psychosocial risk and protective factors affecting the health of MT workers. Methods Descriptive and transversal research with responses from 201 professionals. Results The scores obtained on the various psychosocial scales in our study – as indicators of future health problems – were more unfavourable for non-EMT workers than they were for EMT workers. Work setting, but not gender, was able to account for these differences. Discussion The scores obtained for the different psychosocial factors are generally more favourable for the professionals we surveyed than those obtained in previous samples. Conclusion The significant differences observed between EMT and non-EMT personnel raise important questions regarding the organization of work in companies that carry out both services at the same time in the same territory. The relationships among the set of risk/protective factors suggests a need for further investigation into working conditions as well as a consideration of the workers’ sense of coherence and subjective well-being as protective factors against occupational burnout syndrome.

3. Validation of a kinetic-diffusive model to characterize pozzolanic reaction kinetics in sugar cane straw-clay ash/lime systems

Abstract: A kinetic-diffusive model proposed by the authors in previous papers to describe pozzolanic reaction kinetics in sugar cane straw-clay ash (SCSCA)/calcium hydroxide (CH) systems is validated in this study. Two different methods (direct and indirect) for determining pozzolanic activity were applied and their effect on pozzolanic reaction rate kinetic constants evaluated. Determined by fitting a model to the data, these constants are used to quantitatively characterize pozzolanic activity. The values of the kinetic constants calculated with the model were similar for the two methods. Classic kinetic models, such as the Jander, modified Jander and Zhuravlev models, were also applied to the system studied and the results were compared to the figures calculated with the model proposed. The kinetic-diffusive approach proposed was found to be valid regardless of the method for determining pozzolanic activity used, and to be the most suitable model for describing pozzolanic reaction kinetics in the SCSCA/lime system.

5. 282. Occurrence of adverse events and factors related to prognosis in a cohort of patients hospitalized with COVID-19 at University hospital - UNICAMP, Brazil

Abstract: Background In Brazil, 30.378.061 cases of COVID were reported and 662.866 deaths up to April 27 of 2022. Hospital infections and other hospital adverse events may increase the risk of death in patients with COVID-19. Methods Cohort study that included 650 adult patients hospitalized with a diagnosis of SARS CoV-2 infection at Hospital HC-UNICAMP from March/20 to March/21. Results Of the 650 patients included in the study, 139 (21.38%) died. Comparing the patients who died vs those who survived, we observed a statistically significant difference in the occurrence of thromboembolic and vascular events (23% vs 9.8%; OR 1.332; 95%CI 1.12-1.59; p < 0,0001), ICU admission (84.9% vs 39.6%; OR 0.675; 95%CI 0.62-0.74; p< 0.0001) and the occurrence of HI: bloodstream infections (30.2% vs 8.6%; OR 1.62; 95%CI 1.31-1.99; p< 0.0001), VAP (52.5% vs 12.3%; OR 1.882; 95%CI 1.57-2.26; p< 0.0001) and UTI (27.3% vs 7.2%; OR 1.672; 95%CI 1.32-2.11; p< 0.0001). Gram negative bacteria were the most isolated (62.1%), especially K. pneumoniae, A. baumannii and P. aeruginosa, followed by gram positive bacteria (27%) and fungi (13.8%). When evaluating patients who had thromboembolic events, we observed a statistically significant association with male gender (15.9% vs 7.9%; p 0.003), mean initial D-Dimer values (10,418.00 ng/mL vs 3011.34 ng/ml; p 0.003); acute renal failure (19.1% vs 9.3%; p 0.001) and the occurrence of HI (24.4% vs 7.3%; p< 0.0001). The following factors associated with ICU admission were identified: diabetes mellitus (59.3% vs 40.5%; p< 0.0001); obesity (58.3% vs 41.7%; p 0.003); O2 saturation at admission < 88% (67.8% vs 32.2%); acute renal failure (78.6% vs 21.4%; p< 0.0001) and the occurrence of HI (87.8% vs 12.2%; p< 0.0001). Logistic regression analysis identified the following variables independently associated with death: age (OR 1,034; CI 1,015-1,052), ICU admission (OR 1,107; CI 1,596-5,868), use of vasoactive drugs (OR 2,93; CI 1,79-4,82), development of acute renal failure (OR 7,756; CI 4,537-13,26), and the occurrence of VAP (OR 2,205; CI 1,227-3,961) (Table 1). Abstract: Introduction:New communication technologies allow new opportunities to optimize medical work.Objective:To determine the assessment of WhatsApp for communication and organization of group work among resident physicians during a healthcare management course.Methods:Descriptive, prospective, cross-sectional study. The population consisted of 140 resident physicians who participated in a healthcare management course in 2019 and 2020. A non-probability convenience sample of 132 participants was obtained. We applied the instrument to assess WhatsApp for regulating group work, through the dimensions “WhatsApp for organizing group work” and “WhatsApp as a communication system for group work”, with a reliability of 0.92. Based on the scores assigned to this dimension by the participants, we divided them into three groups: low, medium and high rating.Results:Resident physicians from eight specialties participated: psychiatry, internal medicine, otolaryngology, clinical pathology, cardiovascular surgery, anatomic pathology, legal medicine and pediatric ophthalmology. The average age was 33.37 years. 86.4% of residents use WhatsApp daily. Activity planning and sending text messages and brief instructions had favorable scores. Both dimensions scored 47.36% in the low rating group, 46.35% in the high rating group and 39.3% in the medium rating group. The global result showed a predominance of the high and low rating groups.Conclusion:The majority of resident physicians use WhatsApp as a non-formal communication tool, helpful for sending messages, developing group tasks and planning activities. Additionally, resident physicians and professors consider WhatsApp to be a useful app, and it could facilitate knowledge acquisition. Introducción:Las nuevas tecnologías de comunicación permiten nuevas oportunidades para optimizar el trabajo médico.Objetivo:Determinar la valoración de WhatsApp para la comunicación y organización del trabajo grupal en médicos residentes durante el desarrollo del curso de gerencia en salud.Métodos:Investigación descriptiva, prospectiva y de corte transversal. La población estuvo conformada por 140 médicos residentes matriculados en el curso de gerencia en salud durante 2019 y 2020. Se empleó una muestra no probabilística por conveniencia conformada por 132 participantes. Se utilizó el instrumento para valorar WhatsApp en la regulación del trabajo en grupo mediante la dimensión WhatsApp para la organización del trabajo grupal y como sistema de comunicación para las tareas grupales, contiene una confiabilidad de 0,92. Los resultados se establecieron en 3 grupos; bajo, medio y alto.Resultados:Participaron ocho especialidades médicas; psiquiatría, medicina interna, otorrinolaringología, patología clínica, cirugía cardiovascular, anatomía patológica, medicina legal y oftalmología pediátrica. La edad promedio fue 33,4 años. 86,4% utiliza WhatsApp en forma diaria. La planificación de actividades, envío de mensajes e instrucciones cortas obtuvieron puntuaciones favorables. Las dos dimensiones mostraron 47,4% para grupo bajo; 46,5% grupo alto y 39,3% grupo medio. El resultado global evidenció un predominio del grupo alto y bajo.Conclusión:La mayoría de médicos residentes utiliza WhatsApp como una herramienta de comunicación no formal, útil para el envío de mensajes, desarrollo de tareas grupales y planificación de actividades. Asimismo, WhatsApp es considerado un aplicativo útil para los médicos residentes y los profesores permitiendo la adquisición de conocimientos.

7. Different dopaminergic neurons signal absolute and relative aversive value in the Drosophila mushroom body

Abstract: Animals use prior experience to assign absolute (good or bad) and also relative (better or worse) value to new experience. These learned values guide appropriate later decision-making. While our understanding of how the dopaminergic system computes absolute value is relatively advanced, the mechanistic underpinnings of relative valuation are unclear. Here we reveal mechanisms of absolute and relative aversive valuation in Drosophila. Three types of punishment-sensitive dopaminergic neurons (DANs) drive intensity-scaled plasticity at their respective mushroom body output neuron (MBON) connections to code absolute aversive value. In contrast, by comparing current and previous aversive experiences the MBON-DAN network can code relative aversive value by recruiting a specific subtype of reward-coding dopaminergic neurons which assigns a ‘better than’ value to the lesser of two aversive experiences. This study therefore provides an important functional consequence of having opposing populations of DANs and illustrates how these can operate together as a system within the MB network to code and compare sequential aversive experience to learn relative aversive value.

Abstract: The paper presents the study of pozzolanic activity and hydration of cement pastes containing sugarcane bagasse (SCBA) and bamboo leaves ashes (BLA). Pozzolanic activity of binary and ternary mixtures of ashes was investigated using electrical conductivity measurements. A kinetic-diffusive model was used to quantify the pozzolanic reaction between ashes and calcium hydroxide solution. The influence of ashes on hydration of cementitious pastes was also investigated using thermogravimetry analysis, X-Ray diffraction, isothermal calorimetry and mechanical tests. The results showed that ternary mixtures of SCBA and BLA have a higher pozzolanic activity than the binary mixture of SCBA. Binary and ternary mortars have higher compressive strengths than the control mortar without mineral additives. Moreover, the replacement of cement by 10 wt% of SCBA and BLA leads to a decrease of the calcium hydroxide content and the heat of hydration. The results also showed that the production of 1 ton of binder with agro-industrial ashes needs lower energy than conventional cement. According to the results of the study, the use agro-industrial ashes in binary and ternary blend cements can bring economic, technical and environmental benefits for the industrial sector including fiber cement industry, precast plants and concrete producers.

In contrast, by comparing the absolute value of current and previous aversive experiences, the MBON-DAN network can code relative aversive value by using specific punishment-sensitive DANs and recruiting a specific subtype of reward-coding DANs. Behavioral and physiological experiments revealed that a specific subtype of reward-coding DAN assigns a "better than" value to the lesser of the two aversive experiences. This study therefore highlights how appetitive-aversive system interactions within the MB network can code and compare sequential aversive experiences to learn relative aversive value.

Abstract: In this research work, the quantitative characterization of a binary blend comprised of two pozzolans (sugar cane straw (SCSA)¿sugar cane bagasse ashes (SCBA), bamboo leaf ash (BLAsh)¿SCBA and paper sludge (PS)¿fly ash (FA)) taking into account the calculated values of the kinetic parameters of the reaction in the pozzolan/calcium hydroxide system is shown. The paper shows the most significant and important results obtained by the authors in the quantitative assess-ment (calculation of kinetic parameters) of the pozzolanic reaction of different mixtures of poz-zolanic materials that are residues from agriculture or industrial processes. This allows a direct and rigorous comparison of the pozzolanic activity of the binary combinations of materials. The values of the kinetic parameters (reaction rate constant or activation free energy) constitute a very precise quantitative index of the pozzolanic activity of the binary combinations of materials, which is very useful for its employment in the elaboration of ternary cements. Abstract: BACKGROUND: Several studies show that professionals in the two main models of pre-hospital care (Franco-German (FG) and Anglo-American (AA)) are exposed to different psychosocial risk factors, with consequences such as burnout syndrome. Few studies provide information on protective factors, nor are there any results on risk/protective factors from the perspective of professionals and comparing both models (FG and AA). OBJECTIVE: From the perspective of medical transport (MT) professionals, we aimed to identify the risk/protective factors that may be involved in occupational burnout syndrome (OBS), comparing Franco-German (FG) and Anglo-American (AA) pre-hospital care models, as well as emergency (EMT) and non-emergency (non-EMT) services. METHOD: This was a qualitative research, through 12 semi-structured, in-depth interviews with participants chosen through intentional and snowball sampling. Content analysis and coding was carried out based on Bronfenbrenner’s ecological model and supported by the N-VIVO computer program. RESULTS: Our results illustrate the multi-causal nature of OBS, with risk/protective factors interacting at different levels of the ecological model. Among the data found at the different levels, some of the risk factors provoking OBS most commonly cited by professionals from both models are: work overload, work schedules, the coordinating centre, relationships with managers, the lack of work-life balance, the institutional model, the privatization of companies and the bureaucratization of management. The most cited factors acting as protectors include the stress involved in the emergency services, relationships with colleagues, relationships with other professionals or users, and social recognition. DISCUSSION: In general, we conclude that there are more similarities than differences in terms of how the workers in each model perceive the risk/protective factors.

Abstract: Silica fume is the most performing siliceous product among the pozzolanic materials. This is mainly related to his high content (around of 90%) of amorphous silica. However, this residue has a high cost and the quantities available are limited. This limits its use in the modern construction industry, particularly in developing countries. For this reason it is motivating to look for an alternative to replace it with other waste materials with similar behavior, especially in these countries. It is known that bamboo leaf ash (BLAsh) is a pozzolan with high reactivity, possessing a high amount of amorphous silica. The paper presents a qualitative and quantitative characterization of the pozzolanic reactivity of bamboo leaf ash (BLAsh) and silica fume (SF). The pozzolanic activity is evaluated by using a conductometric method. In this method the electrical conductivity in a BLAsh/Ca(OH)2 and SF/Ca(OH)2 solution is measured with the reaction time. Latter, a kinetic-diffusive model is applied which allows computing the kinetic parameters of the pozzolanic reaction. The values of these parameters, specifically the reaction rate constant, characterize the reacting process and allow evaluating quantitatively the pozzolanic activity of these materials. The application of other experimental techniques employed in this research [X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM)], support the results coming from the conductometric method. The results show that BLAsh and SF are formed fundamentally by amorphous silica with a high pozzolanic activity. The comparison of BLAsh with SF allows concluding that both have a similar reactivity with reaction rate constant of 4.78 × 10−1 and 5.11 × 10−1 h−1 respectively. Abstract: Background: With the increase of life expectancy, *On behalf of the REIN registry. end-stage renal disease (ESRD) is affecting a growing number of people. Simultaneously, renal replacement therapies (RRTs) have considerably improved patient survival. We investigated the way current RRT practices would affect patients' survival.Methods: We used a multi-state model to represent the transitions between RRTs and the transition to death. The concept of “crude probability of death” combined with this model allowed estimating the proportions of ESRD-related and ESRD-unrelated deaths. Estimating the ESRD-related death rate requires comparing the mortality rate between ESRD patients and the general population. Predicting patients' courses through RRTs and Death states could be obtained by solving a system of Kolmogorov differential equations. The impact of practice on patient survival was quantified using the restricted mean survival time (RMST) which was compared with that of healthy subjects with same characteristics.Results: The crude probability of ESRD-unrelated death was nearly zero in the youngest patients (18–45 years) but was a sizeable part of deaths in the oldest (≥70 years). Moreover, in the oldest patients, the proportion of expected death was higher in patient without vs. with diabetes because the former live older. In men aged 75 years at first RRT, the predicted RMSTs in patients with and without diabetes were, respectively, 61% and 69% those of comparable healthy men.Conclusion: Using the concept of “crude probability of death” with multi-state models is feasible and useful to assess the relative benefits of various treatments in ESRD and help patient long-term management.

Abstract: This paper presents results of an all-sky search for periodic gravitational waves in the frequency range [50, 1 190] Hzand and with frequency derivative range of approx. [-20,1.1] x 10(exp-10) H(sub 0)z s(exp-1) for the fifth LIGO science run (S5). The search uses a noncoherent Hough-transform method to combine the information from coherent searches on time scales of about one day. Because these searches are very computationally intensive, they have been carried out with the Einstein@Home volunteer distributed computing project. Postprocessing identifies eight candidate signals; deeper follow-up studies rule them out. Hence, since no gravitational wave signals have been found, we report upper limits on the intrinsic gravitational wave strain amplitude ho. For example, in the 0.5 Hz-wide band at 152.5 Hz, we can exclude the presence of signals with h(exp 0) greater than 7.6 x 10(exp-25) at a 90% confidence level. This search is about a factor 3 more sensitive than the previous Einstein@Home search of early S5 LIGO data.

Abstract: Background: Triple negative breast cancers (TNBC) have a greater risk of relapse than non-TNBC. New therapeutic approaches are needed for these patients (pts). CIBOMA/2004-01_GEICAM/2003-11 is a multinational, randomized phase III trial exploring adjuvant capecitabine (X) after completion of standard treatment in early TNBC pts. Materials and Methods: Patients with operable, node-positive (or node-negative with tumor size ≥ 1 cm), centrally confirmed hormone receptor-negative, HER2-negative early BC, who had received 6–8 cycles (cy) of standard anthracycline and/or taxane-containing chemotherapy or 4 cy of doxorubicin-cyclophosphamide (for node-negative disease) in the (neo)adjuvant setting, were eligible. Patients were randomized to either 8 cy of X (1,000 mg/m2 bid, days 1–14, every 3 weeks) or observation. Stratification factors included center, prior taxane-based therapy, number of involved axillary lymph nodes and phenotype (basal vs non-basal, according to cytokeratins 5/6 and/or EGFR positivity). The primary objective was to compare the disease-free survival (DFS) between both treatment arms, and secondary objectives included the comparison in terms of 5-year DFS, overall survival (OS) and safety. Assuming a 30% risk reduction in DFS rate at 5 years (from 64.7% to 73.7%, hazard ratio 0.70) with 80% power and a two-tailed log-rank test at 0.05, 834 evaluable pts were needed. 876 pts had to be finally enrolled considering a drop-out rate of 5%. Results: Recruitment of 876 pts from 8 countries was completed in September 2011. Median age was 49 years; 68.5% of pts were postmenopausal, 55.5% were lymph node negative, 71.7% had a basal phenotype, 67.5% received chemotherapy based on anthracyclines and taxanes. Median follow-up was 7.3 years (range 0.0 to 11.1). DFS was not significantly prolonged with X vs observation (hazard ratio (HR) 0.82; 95% confidence interval (CI), 0.63 to 1.06; P=0.1353). Five-year DFS was 79.6% (95% CI, 75.8% to 83.4%) with X and 76.8% (95% CI, 72.7% to 80.9%) with observation. OS was not statistically different between treatment arms (HR 0.92; 95% CI, 0.66 to 1.28; P=0.6228). In subgroup analysis for DFS, we found no statistically significant interaction between X treatment and different subgroups, with the exception of basal vs non-basal phenotypes (basal HR 0.97, 95% CI 0.72 to 1.32, P=0.8620; non-basal HR 0.51, 95% CI, 0.31 to 0.86, P=0.0101; interaction P=0.0357). Similar results were found for OS (basal HR 1.20, 95% CI 0.81 to 1.77, P=0.3684; non-basal HR 0.48, 95% CI, 0.26 to 0.91, P=0.0205; interaction P=0.0155). 75.2% of pts completed 8 cy of X, with a median relative dose intensity of 86.3%. Grade (G) 3 or higher adverse events (AEs) were observed in 40.4% of pts in X arm. In 9.6% of pts the AEs were related with X. Hand-foot syndrome was the most common AE in X arm (G3 on 18.8% of pts). Conclusions: In our study, the addition of adjuvant X after standard (neo) adjuvant anthracycline and/or taxane-containing chemotherapy was not associated with a statistically significant improvement of DFS or OS compared to observation in pts with early TNBC. However, in a subgroup analysis a significant DFS and OS improvement was observed with X in pts with non-basal phenotype. Sponsor: CIBOMA. Abstract: Resumen Objetivo En nuestra practica clinica, el masaje funcional ofrece buenos resultados en el tratamiento de pacientes diagnosticados de sindrome subacromial y presencia de puntos gatillo en el musculo redondo mayor. Nuestro objetivo es comprobar los resultados del masaje funcional del musculo redondo mayor sobre el dolor, la funcion y la movilidad, en pacientes diagnosticados de sindrome subacromial. Material y metodos Estudio experimental de serie de casos, aleatorizado, simple ciego, multicentrico (dos centros), con 38 participantes distribuidos aleatoriamente en dos grupos. Un fisioterapeuta de cada centro proporciono a todos los participantes un tratamiento protocolizado en sesiones diarias durante tres semanas y, adicionalmente, los asignados al Grupo Masaje Funcional recibieron diariamente cinco minutos de masaje funcional del redondo mayor, y los asignados al Grupo Movilizacion Pasiva recibieron diariamente cinco minutos de movilizacion pasiva en direccion del estiramiento muscular. Resultados El Grupo Masaje Funcional consiguio una mejoria estadisticamente significativa en todas las variables de resultados. El Grupo Movilizacion Pasiva consiguio mejoria estadisticamente significativa en todas las variables a excepcion de los movimientos de extension y rotacion externa. En la comparacion entre grupos, la mayor mejoria del Grupo Masaje Funcional en extension alcanza significacion estadistica, y la mayor mejoria en abduccion, extension y rotacion externa alcanza significacion clinica de pequena a moderada. Los sujetos asignados al Grupo Masaje Funcional mostraban una mejor satisfaccion con los resultados. Conclusiones En este estudio, el masaje funcional de los puntos gatillo del musculo redondo mayor proporciona mejores resultados clinicos que la movilizacion pasiva en direccion del estiramiento muscular.

Abstract: Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is the gold standard treatment for the vast majority of patients with symptomatic cholelithiasis. Although cirrhotic patients are twice as likely to develop gallstones as compared with noncirrhotic patients, cirrhosis has historically been considered a relative, if not absolute, contraindication to laparoscopic cholecystectomy. More recently a number of authors have reported on the safety of laparoscopic cholecystectomy in cirrhotic patients. We reviewed our patients retrospectively and assessed the safety of laparoscopic cholecystectomy in cirrhotic patients as compared with noncirrhotics at a large liver transplant center. A retrospective longitudinal cohort study was conducted of all laparoscopic cholecystectomies performed by our surgical group between August 2002 and April 2011. Of 63 patients undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomy, 32 (51%) were cirrhotic. Of the 30 for whom a Child score could be calculated, 11 (34%) were Child A, 14 (44%) were Child B, and five (16%) were Child C. The morbidity rate was 33 per cent and mortality rate was 2 per cent. Length of stay, conversion rates, 30-day readmission rates, and morbidity and mortality rates were not significantly different between the cirrhotic and noncirrhotic groups. There was a trend toward higher complication rates in Child C cirrhotics. Our results indicate that laparoscopic cholecystectomy can be performed with acceptable morbidity and mortality in carefully selected cirrhotic patients.

Abstract: The paper presents a study of the pozzolanic reaction kinetics between calcium hydroxide and sugar cane bagasse ash (SCBAB) from the boiler of a sugar factory. A pozzolanic activity method (conductometric method) based on measurement of the electrical conductivity of the SCBAB/calcium hydroxide solution as the reaction proceeds is applied and the kinetic parameters are then quantified by applying a kinetic–diffusive model to the process. The kinetic parameters that characterise the process (in particular, the reaction rate constant and the free energy of activation) were determined with relative accuracy in the fitting process of the model. The pozzolanic activity is quantitatively evaluated according to the obtained values of the kinetic parameters. Other experimental techniques, such as X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy, are also employed. Comparison with another bagasse ash calcined under controlled conditions in the laboratory is carried out. The results show the good pozzolanic properties of the SCBAB from the boiler of the sugar factory.

Abstract: Due to economical and sustainable issues there is growing interest in investigating agro-industrial wastes as alternative route for future eco-efficient and sustainable pozzolans. The generation of ashes from cogeneration processes in which sugar cane wastes are used as biomass, involves significant environmental, social and health problems when they are accumulated in dumps. This paper explores the scientific and technical aspects of two Brazilian sugar cane ashes from different processes of production: one from an industrial cogeneration process and another from laboratory scale, maintaining the same proportions of mixture (50% mixture of bagasse and leaf). Subsequently, their behavior in ordinary Portland cement matrices made with 20% ashes substitution was analyzed. The results show that the industrial ashes presented variations on the chemical and mineralogical compositions, pozzolanic reaction rate and different formation of hydrated phases with respect to the laboratory ashes. The 20% blended cements complied with the chemical, physical and mechanical requirements set out in the existing Standards, maintaining the mechanical performance with respect to the control mortar at 60 days of curing.

Abstract: Contemporary society is faced with any number of pressing problems, not least of which is the generation of waste and industrial by-products. Technological progress is nonetheless favoring ever more efficient, sustainable, and eco-friendly industrial development. In construction in particular, it has been standard practice for many decades to use industrial waste and by-products to replace natural raw materials in various stages of building and civil works. This chapter discusses research on industrial waste and refuse, classified by its organic or inorganic origin and the activation process deployed. The inorganic matter addressed includes fired clay industry discards, construction and demolition waste, spent catalytic cracking catalysts, and coal waste. The three types of organic waste described (which must be thermally activated prior to use as cement additions) are sugar cane, bamboo leaf, and a combination of straw and forest waste. These industrial waste may be an alternative for the new natural fiber-reinforced composite manufacture with improved properties (resistance, durability). The findings confirm the scientific and technical feasibility of using the waste as a supplementary cementitious material to manufacture more innovative and eco-efficient commercial alternatives to conventional cement.

Abstract: Zeolites generally show pozzolanic activity due to their structural characteristics. The utilisation of pozzolans as additions to cements results in added technical advantages of the construction materials. In this study, the pozzolanic activity of a thermally treated natural mordenite- type zeolite from the Palmarito open-air deposit (Cuba) was evaluated with respect to a non-treated zeolite. Initially, a thermal treatment of the zeolite was performed at different temperatures within the range 300–1000 C for 5 h in order to evaluate the better temperature of treatment. Afterwards, the pozzolanic activity was determined for each temperature after 7 days of reaction with a saturated Ca(OH)2 solution that simulates the release of lime from ordinary Portland cement during the hydration reaction. The higher pozzolanic activity was achieved with the thermal treatment performed at 300 C. Therefore, a further study studied the evolution of the mineralogical phases produced during pozzolanic reaction up to 90 days, carried out with the zeolite treated at that temperature. Consumption of Ca2? in solution and formation of C–S–H-like phases with low Ca/Si ratio were experimentally observed as the main pozzolanic products. The thermodynamic study confirms high reactivity of the zeolite at short-term and chemical stability of the reaction products after 28 days. The zeolite thermally treated at 300 C confirmed an increase in the pozzolanic activity with respect to the nontreated zeolite.

Abstract: Resume Dans l’ensemble des pays industrialises, l’epidemiologie de la maladie renale chronique est caracterisee par l’epidemie de diabete responsable ou associee a l’atteinte renale. Il est estime en France que plus de 400 000 sujets diabetiques de type 2 presentent un debit de filtration glomerulaire inferieur a 60 ml/min/1,73 m 2 , quand plus de 7000 sont prevalents en dialyse. Pour les diabetiques de type 1, le pronostic renal semble s’etre ameliore au cours des dernieres decennies du fait de la generalisation du controle glycemique strict et de l’utilisation des bloqueurs du systeme renine – angiotensine. La survie de ces patients en dialyse reste mediocre, largement inferieure a celle des non diabetiques, alors que l’acces a la transplantation renale est faible pour les diabetiques de type 2. Le cout de la prise en charge de ces patients diabetiques en dialyse peut etre estime a plus de 750 millions d’euros par an France. A cote des armes pharmacologiques et hygieno-dietetiques, l’education therapeutique et la telemedecine pourraient etre des moyens de mieux impliquer patients et medecins dans cette prise en charge polypathologique, d’ameliorer le pronostic des patients atteints et ainsi de diminuer les couts induits.

Abstract: [EN] Natural zeolite is a type of mineralogical material containing large quantities of reactive SiO2 and Al2O3. These materials have been used in the cement industry as a supplementary cementing material. Like other pozzolanic materials the zeolite contributes to improve the mortar and concrete performances mainly through the pozzolanic reaction with calcium hydroxide (CH). The pozzolanic reactivity of this type of material in comparison with other pozzolans is of great interest. The current paper presents a study about the pozzolanic activity of a natural Cuban zeolitic rock. The pozzolanic activity in a zeolitic material/CH solution is investigated by means of electrical conductivity measurements and latter on the kinetic parameters are quantified by applying a kinetic–diffusive model to process. The kinetic parameters that characterize the process (in particular the reaction rate constant) were determined in the fitting process of the model. The index of pozzolanic activity evaluated according to the obtained values of the reaction rate constant permits to characterize the pozzolanic activity of these materials in a rigorous way. The results show that this Cuban zeolitic rock is a natural material with high pozzolanic activity. Also, these results allow corroborating the direct influence of the fineness of zeolitic material on the pozzolanic and mechanical properties.

Abstract: The Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory (LIGO) is a network of three detectors built to detect local perturbations in the space–time metric from astrophysical sources. These detectors, two in Hanford, WA and one in Livingston, LA, are power-recycled Fabry-Perot Michelson interferometers. In their fifth science run (S5), between November 2005 and October 2007, these detectors accumulated one year of triple coincident data while operating at their designed sensitivity. Abstract: [EN] It is well known that the transformation of some clay minerals into pozzolanic materials for the manufacture of Portland cements depends on the activation conditions. In the current paper, a study was carried out to evaluate the effect of activation temperature in the range of 500–700°C on the characteristics of thermally activated clay wastes (ACWs). Different chemical, morphological, mineralogical and pozzolanic characteristics as well as kinetic parameter determinations were analysed in order to provide a complete study of the activated products and the viability of their use in the manufacture of blended cements. The results obtained showed that activation temperature plays a special role in the mineralogy of ACWs as well as their pozzolanic behaviour. Mineralogically, the ACWs were essentially formed from calcite and talc; kaolinite and chlorite were also identified depending on activation conditions. The values of the kinetic parameters indicated different pozzolanic activity of the ACWs, mainly over the short term.

Abstract: The kinetic study of the tempering reactions of a low-alloy steel (AISI 1050) was carried out through non-isothermal dilatometry. The kinetic parameters of the first and third stages on tempering (here referred to as processes I and II) are calculated by procedures which assume that the nucleation and growth reactions obey a Kolmogorov–Johnson–Mehl–Avrami (KJMA) kinetic model. The recipes to obtain the kinetic parameters (E, K0, n) of the reactions on tempering are presented. The first stage of tempering is characterized by the growth of the transition carbide nuclei formed during the quenching, n = 1 (site saturation situation). This stage is controlled by the pipe diffusion of the iron atoms. The third stage of tempering is characterized by the cementite nucleation on dislocations due to the gradual dissolution of the transition carbide, n = 0.66. The cementite growth is controlled by diffusion of the iron atoms through dislocations and in the matrix.

Abstract: [EN] A natural mordenite-type zeolite from Palmarito ore deposit (Cuba) was studied along the reaction with a saturated lime solution at 40 °C in order to determine its pozzolanic activity. Ca(OH)2 is an alkali activating agent that simulates the release of lime from ordinary portland cement during the hydration reaction. Formation of C–S–H-like phases with very low Ca/Si ratio (below 0.8) was observed in agreement with previous studies, however, the transformation of the original mordenite into a heulandite–clinoptilolite-type secondary zeolite was also detected. A thermodynamic approach was used to evaluate the stability of the zeolite minerals and showed that clinoptilolite is the most stable zeolite that forms under the experimental alkaline conditions. The results indicate that not all Ca2+ consumed from solution is used in the pozzolanic reaction. Calcium aluminates hydrates were not detected as products of the alkali-activated reaction.

40. Correlación entre dolor, discapacidad y rango de movilidad en pacientes con lumbalgia crónica

Abstract: Resumen Objetivos Analizar la correlacion entre el dolor, la movilidad y la discapacidad de los pacientes con lumbalgia cronica de un servicio publico de atencion primaria. Material y metodos Estudio descriptivo realizado en un servicio de rehabilitacion de atencion primaria del Institut Catala de la Salut. Participaron 143 pacientes con lumbalgia cronica (mas de 3 meses), de ambos sexos y edad entre 18 y 65 anos. Se midio el dolor (escala visual analogica), la discapacidad (cuestionario de discapacidad de Roland-Morris) y el rango de movilidad en flexion, extension e inclinaciones laterales. Resultados El dolor presento una correlacion significativa con la discapacidad (coeficiente de correlacion de Pearson [r]=0,37) y con la movilidad en extension (r=−0,23) e inclinaciones laterales (r entre −0,18 y −0,23), pero no con la movilidad en flexion ni con el resto de las variables demograficas recogidas. La discapacidad, ademas de con el dolor, presento una correlacion estadisticamente significativa con la movilidad en todas las direcciones (r entre −0,19 y −0,33), con la edad (r=0,26), con el tiempo de duracion de los sintomas (r=0,21) y mostro diferencias significativas en funcion del sexo (p Conclusiones Las correlaciones entre dolor, movilidad y discapacidad, aunque significativas, son debiles, por lo que deben considerarse como independientes. Para obtener mejores resultados en el tratamiento conservador de la lumbalgia cronica, la medicacion analgesica debe complementarse con fisioterapia y ergoterapia.

A new search method is used, "stacking'' the GW data around the times of individual soft-gamma bursts in the storm to enhance sensitivity for models in which multiple bursts are accompanied by GW emission. We assume that variation in the time difference between burst electromagnetic emission and potential burst GW emission is small relative to the GW signal duration, and we time-align GW excess power time-frequency tilings containing individual burst triggers to their corresponding electromagnetic emissions. We use two GW emission models in our search: a fluence-weighted model and a flat (unweighted) model for the most electromagnetically energetic bursts. We find no evidence of GWs associated with either model. Model-dependent GW strain, isotropic GW emission energy E_GW, and \gamma = E_GW / E_EM upper limits are estimated using a variety of assumed waveforms. The stacking method allows us to set the most stringent model-dependent limits on transient GW strain published to date. We find E_GW upper limit estimates (at a nominal distance of 10 kpc) of between 2x10^45 erg and 6x10^50 erg depending on waveform type. These limits are an order of magnitude lower than upper limits published previously for this storm and overlap with the range of electromagnetic energies emitted in SGR giant flares., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures

Abstract: This paper discusses a novel process (current-activated tip-based sintering (CATS)) for the sintering (1D, 2D and 3D) of macro-, micro- and nano-scale features. In CATS, electric current and contacting pressure are applied selectively to the powder through a conducting tip, to enforce local spark plasma sintering conditions. The present work discusses this new process within the framework of macro- and micro-scale sintering. Results show the successful localized sintering of nickel powder beneath both a stationary and moving tip.

Abstract: The fourth science run of the LIGO and GEO 600 gravitational-wave detectors, carried out in early 2005, collected data with significantly lower noise than previous science runs. We report on a search for short-duration gravitational-wave bursts with arbitrary waveform in the 64-1600 Hz frequency range appearing in all three LIGO interferometers. Signal consistency tests, data quality cuts, and auxiliary-channel vetoes are applied to reduce the rate of spurious triggers. No gravitational-wave signals are detected in 15.5 days of live observation time; we set a frequentist upper limit of 0.15 per day (at 90% confidence level) on the rate of bursts with large enough amplitudes to be detected reliably. The amplitude sensitivity of the search, characterized using Monte Carlo simulations, is several times better than that of previous searches. Abstract: Historically, impaired renal function was the leading cause of death in spinal cord injury patients. Although the management of these patients has considerably improved due to progress in functional rehabilitation and neurourology, renal failure remains a significant cause of morbidity in this population. In this article, the authors review and classify the diagnostic tools able to detect urological changes likely to induce irreversible impairment of renal function. Based on a review of the recent literature, they define the incidence of renal impairment (morphological or function) in spinal cord injury patients and describe the main risk factors for deterioration of renal function in these patients.

Abstract: Publicación versión online: 22 May 2006., This paper reports on the influence of calcining temperature (800 and 1000 °C) on the pozzolanic activation of sugar cane straw (SCS). The reaction kinetics of SCS ash–lime mixtures were inferred from physicochemical characteristics (X-ray diffraction patterns and thermogravimetry analysis. The fitting of a kinetic–diffusive model to the experimental data (fixed lime versus time) allowed the computing of the kinetic parameters (reaction rate constant) of the pozzolanic reaction. Results obtained confirm that the sugar cane straw ash (SCSA) calcined at 800 and 1000 °C have properties indicative of very high pozzolanic activity. No influence of calcining temperature on the pozzolanic activity was observed. Also, no crystalline compounds during the pozzolanic reaction were identified up to 90 days of reaction. Abstract: Purpose The paper presents final results of a comparative research on young Brazilian collegians in the 18–24-year-old age bracket. The objective was to understand the interactions and ways in which they transit within the physical and digital Web spaces and, within their transits, set up “circulatory territories,” deepen and enrich their secondary socialization setups and sociability, as well as their processes of individuation within the historic condition in which youth lives. Methodology/approach The study is supported by conceptual contributions offered by the sociology of youth, circulatory territory, socialization, sociability, and individuation. Research was carried out with students of two different universities: a public/state one and a public/municipal/foundational one situated in different urban centers of the southeastern region of the country. Procedures were qualitative and quantitative – closed questions forms, interviews, registries in field notebooks, etc. Findings The results of the investigation demonstrate: (a) that the representatives of the two student collectives studied circulate in physical and digital territories, setting up circulatory territories; (b) there are also different youth lifestyles, either due to social positions and the fact that they possess social capital, or because of differences and inequalities referring to gender, race/ethnicity (whites and non-whites), living situations. Originality/value In this manner, the study indicates the importance of questioning the homogenized image of connected youth since some collegians’ lives are limited due to their condition as young workers, while others live their youth condition as a social moratorium, being able to produce other manners of being and of living in the world.

In our country, there is no updated information on the prevalence of this pulmonary disease, its treatment and evolution in immucocompetent patients. Abstract: Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) relapse after allogeneic stem cell transplantation (SCT) is a relatively frequent situation, which is correlated to disease status, time from diagnosis to transplant and T-cell depletion. We evaluated the potential for early minimal residual disease (MRD) BCR-ABL quantification to predict relapse of CML patients receiving allogeneic SCT. Minimal residual disease was analyzed by real-time quantitative reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RQ-PCR) at day 100 (d100) in 38 patients with >1 year follow-up after conventional non-T-cell-depleted SCT. Normal ABL control values from 1724 follow-up blood samples were used to define an RQ-PCR amplifiability index and the limits of reliable use of BCR-ABL ratios.
