Fused deposition modeling (FDM) is well suited for microfluidic prototyping due to its low investment cost and a wide range of accessible materials. Nevertheless, most commercial FDM materials exhibit low chemical and thermal stability. This reduces the scope of applications and limits their use in research and development, especially for on-chip chemical synthesis. In this paper, we present FDM fabrication of microfluidic chips with polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) for applications that require high thermal or chemical resistance. Embedded microchannels with a minimum channel width and heights of ~200 µm × 200 µm were fabricated, and the resistance against common solvents was analyzed. A procedure was developed to increase the optical transmission to result in translucent components by printing on glass. Chips for fluid mixing were printed, as well as microreactors that were packed with a catalytically active phase and used for acetal deprotection with a conversion of more than 99%. By expanding the use of fluorinated polymers to FDM printing, previously challenging microfluidic applications will be conducted with ease at the lab scale.

Abstract Introduction Incontinence and urgency are common after prostatectomy. The University of Virginia prostatectomy functional outcomes program (PFOP) was developed to comprehensively assess and optimise continence outcomes following robotic‐assisted laparoscopic prostatectomy (RALP). Patients are prospectively evaluated by a Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery specialist. This study assessed for predictors of 3‐ and 6‐month stress urinary incontinence (SUI) and urgency symptom outcomes following RALP. Methods We performed a post hoc review of patients from our PFOP receiving a minimum of 6‐month follow‐up. Urinary symptoms are prospectively assessed using the validated International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire‐Male Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms (ICIQ‐MLUTS) questionnaire and daily pad use (pads per day [PPD]). Primary study outcomes included ICIQ‐MLUTS SUI and urgency domain scores and PPD. Multivariable linear regression was performed to identify variables associated with outcomes at 3 and 6 months postoperatively. Variables included patient, oncologic and surgical factors. Each variable was run in a separate model with pelvic floor muscle therapy and surgeon to reduce confounding and prevent overfitting. Results Forty men were included. In assessment of ICIQ‐MLUTS SUI domain score, at 3 months, body mass index (BMI) was associated with worse scores, and at 6 months, BMI, hypertension and estimated blood loss (EBL) were associated with worse scores, whereas bilateral nerve‐sparing technique was associated with better scores. For ICIQ‐MLUTS Urgency domain score, at 3 months, preoperative use of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) medication was associated with better scores. No covariates predicted 6‐month ICIQ‐MLUTS Urgency domain scores. For PPD use, at both 3 and 6 months, BMI was a positive predictor, while preoperative use of BPH medication was a negative predictor. Conclusion Increased BMI, EBL and hypertension are associated with worsened SUI outcomes following RALP, whereas bilateral nerve‐sparing technique and preoperative BPH medication are associated with improved SUI outcomes. These data may inform patient counselling and help identify patients who may benefit from closer surveillance and earlier anti‐incontinence intervention.

Abstract Adequate pain management is essential for ethical and scientific reasons in animal experiments and should completely cover the period of expected pain without the need for frequent re-application. However, current depot formulations of Buprenorphine are only available in the USA and have limited duration of action. Recently, a new microparticulate Buprenorphine formulation (BUP-Depot) for sustained release has been developed as a potential future alternative to standard formulations available in Europe. Pharmacokinetics indicate a possible effectiveness for about 72 h. Here, we investigated whether the administration of the BUP-Depot ensures continuous and sufficient analgesia in two mouse fracture models (femoral osteotomy) and could, therefore, serve as a potent alternative to the application of Tramadol via the drinking water. Both protocols were examined for analgesic effectiveness, side effects on experimental readout, and effects on fracture healing outcomes in male and female C57BL/6N mice. The BUP-Depot provided effective analgesia for 72 h, comparable to the effectiveness of Tramadol in the drinking water. Fracture healing outcome was not different between analgesic regimes. The availability of a Buprenorphine depot formulation for rodents in Europe would be a beneficial addition for extended pain relief in mice, thereby increasing animal welfare.

Production of tools for polymer replication in the field of optical applications is still time-consuming and cost-intensive. Here the authors develop an efficient metal casting process, and demonstrate manufacturing of structures of complex shapes with a surface roughness of few nanometres.

Abstract Transparent ceramics like magnesium aluminate spinel (MAS) are considered the next step in material evolution showing unmatched mechanical, chemical and physical resistance combined with high optical transparency. Unfortunately, transparent ceramics are notoriously difficult to shape, especially on the microscale. Therefore, a thermoplastic MAS nanocomposite is developed that can be shaped by polymer injection molding at high speed and precision. The nanocomposite is converted to dense MAS by debinding, pre‐sintering, and hot isostatic pressing yielding transparent ceramics with high optical transmission up to 84 % and high mechanical strength. A transparent macroscopic MAS components with wall thicknesses up to 4 mm as well as microstructured components with single micrometer resolution are shown. This work makes transparent MAS ceramics accessible to modern high‐throughput polymer processing techniques for fast and cost‐efficient manufacturing of macroscopic and microstructured components enabling a plethora of potential applications from optics and photonics, medicine to scratch and break‐resistant transparent windows for consumer electronics.

Abstract In recent years, additive manufacturing (AM) of glass has attracted great interest in academia and industry, yet it is still mostly limited to liquid nanocomposite‐based approaches for stereolithography, two‐photon polymerization, or direct ink writing. Melt‐extrusion‐based processes, such as fused deposition modeling (FDM), which will allow facile manufacturing of large thin‐walled components or simple multimaterial printing processes, are so far inaccessible for AM of transparent fused silica glass. Here, melt‐extrusion‐based AM of transparent fused silica is introduced by FDM and fused feedstock deposition (FFD) using thermoplastic silica nanocomposites that are converted to transparent glass using debinding and sintering. This will enable printing of previously inaccessible glass structures like high‐aspect‐ratio (>480) vessels with wall thicknesses down to 250 µm, delicate parts including overhanging features using polymer support structures, as well as dual extrusion for multicolored glasses.

Fused silica glass has excellent optical properties, chemical and thermal stability and hardness, but its microstructuring for miniaturized applications has proven difficult. Here the authors demonstrate obtainment of precise arbitrary three dimensional hollow microstructures in fused silica glass by sacrificial template replication.

Following severe trauma, fracture healing is impaired because of overwhelming systemic and local inflammation. Glucocorticoids (GCs), acting via the glucocorticoid receptor (GR), influence fracture healing by modulating the trauma-induced immune response. GR dimerization-dependent gene regulation is essential for the anti-inflammatory effects of GCs. Therefore, we investigated in a murine trauma model of combined femur fracture and thoracic trauma, whether effective GR dimerization influences the pathomechanisms of trauma-induced compromised fracture healing. To this end, we used mice with decreased GR dimerization ability (GRdim). The healing process was analyzed by cytokine/chemokine multiplex analysis, flow cytometry, gene-expression analysis, histomorphometry, micro-computed tomography, and biomechanical testing. GRdim mice did not display a systemic or local hyper-inflammation upon combined fracture and thorax trauma. Strikingly, we discovered that GRdim mice were protected from fracture healing impairment induced by the additional thorax trauma. Collectively and in contrast to previous studies describing the beneficial effects of intact GR dimerization in inflammatory models, we report here an adverse role of intact GR dimerization in trauma-induced compromised fracture healing.

Patients are increasingly using online rating websites to obtain information about physicians and to provide feedback. We performed an analysis of urologist online ratings, with specific focus on the relationship between overall rating and urologist subspecialty. We conducted an analysis of urologist ratings on Healthgrades.com . Ratings were sampled across 4 US geographical regions, with focus across 3 practice types (large and small private practice, academic) and 7 urologic subspecialties. Statistical analysis was performed to assess for differences among subgroup ratings. Data were analyzed for 954 urologists with a mean age of 53 (±10) years. The median overall urologist rating was 4.0 [3.4-4.7]. Providers in an academic practice type or robotics/oncology subspecialty had statistically significantly higher ratings when compared to other practice settings or subspecialties ( P < 0.001). All other comparisons between practice types, specialties, regions, and sexes failed to demonstrate statistically significant differences. In our study of online urologist ratings, robotics/oncology subspecialty and academic practice setting were associated with higher overall ratings. Further study is needed to assess reasons underlying this difference.

Abstract Objective Compliance with post-operative follow-up in the context of international surgical trips is often poor. The etiology of this problem is multifactorial and includes lack of local physician involvement, transportation costs, and work responsibilities. We aimed to better understand availability of communication technologies within Belize and use this information to improve follow-up after visiting surgical trips to a public hospital in Belize City. Accordingly, a 6-item questionnaire assessing access to communication technologies was completed by all patients undergoing evaluation by a visiting surgical team in 2014. Based on this data, a pilot program for patients undergoing surgery was instituted for subsequent missions (2015–2016) that included a 6-week post-operative telephone interview with a visiting physician located in the United States. Results Fifty-four (n = 54) patients were assessed via survey with 89% responding that they had a mobile phone. Patients reported less access to home internet (59%), local internet (52%), and email (48%). Of 35 surgical patients undergoing surgery during 2 subsequent surgical trips, 18 (51%) were compliant with telephone interview at 6-week follow-up. Issues were identified in 3 (17%) patients that allowed for physician assistance. The cost per patient interview was $10 USD.

Abstract Superhydrophobic surfaces and surface coatings are of high interest for many applications in everyday life including non-wetting and low-friction coatings as well as functional clothing. Manufacturing of these surfaces is intricate since superhydrophobicity requires structuring of surfaces on a nano- to microscale. This delicate surface structuring makes most superhydrophobic surfaces very sensitive to abrasion and renders them impractical for real-life applications. In this paper we present a transparent fluorinated polymer foam that is synthesized by a simple one-step photoinitiated radical polymerization. We term this material “Fluoropor”. It possesses an inherent nano-/microstructure throughout the whole bulk material and is thus insensitive to abrasion as its superhydrophobic properties are not merely due to a thin-layer surface-effect. Due to its foam-like structure with pore sizes below the wavelength of visible light Fluoropor appears optically transparent. We determined contact angles, surface energy, wear resistance and Vickers hardness to highlight Fluoropor’s applicability for real-word applications.

Abstract The miniaturization of synthesis, analysis and screening experiments is an important step towards more environmentally friendly chemistry, statistically significant biology and fast and cost-effective medicinal assays. The facile generation of arbitrary 3D channel structures in polymers is pivotal to these techniques. Here we present a method for printing microchannels directly into viscous curable polymer matrices by injecting a surfactant into the uncured material via a steel capillary attached to a 3D printer. We demonstrate this technique using polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) one of the most widely used polymers for the fabrication of, e. g. microfluidic chips. We show that this technique which we term Suspended Liquid Subtractive Lithography (SLSL) is well suited for printing actuators, T-junctions and complex three dimensional structures. The formation of truly arbitrary channels in 3D could revolutionize the fabrication of miniaturized chips and will find broad application in biology, chemistry and medicine.

Rapp ericrapp@icloud.com ABSTRACT In K-12 school settings in the United States, there is a preponderance of information delivered via multimedia to students everyday (e.g., visual aids found in science textbooks, electronic tablets, streamed video content, web pages, animations, and PowerPoint presentations). The cognitive theory of multimedia learning (CTML) outlines numerous principles associated with learning from and with multimedia (Mayer, Hegarty, Mayer, & Cambell, 2005). However, the bulk of the research like the CTML has been conducted using college age students (Jones, 2010; McTigue, 2009). There is ample evidence that college age students and younger students exhibit numerous and important differences when learning from multimedia content (Hannus & Hyona, 1999; McTique, 2009; Moreno, 2007; Van Parreren, 1983). As a result, the objective of the current study is to examine the influence of multimedia presentations that leverage motion (present or absent) in conjunction with signaling cues (present or absent) on high school students’ ability to learn science concepts. Using a 2x2 experimental design, 99 high school participants were randomly assigned to one of four conditions. Results of indicated statistical significance all participants over time for a knowledge measure and quality of concepts from a concept mapping task. Implications for multimedia learning theory on younger students are examined.
