Abstract: The JET hybrid scenario has been developed from low plasma current carbon wall discharges to the record-breaking Deuterium-Tritium plasmas obtained in 2021 with the ITER-like Be/W wall. The development started in pure Deuterium with refinement of the plasma current, and toroidal magnetic field choices and succeeded in solving the heat load challenges arising from 37 MW of injected power in the ITER like wall environment, keeping the radiation in the edge and core controlled, avoiding MHD instabilities and reaching high neutron rates. The Deuterium hybrid plasmas have been re-run in Tritium and methods have been found to keep the radiation controlled but not at high fusion performance probably due to time constraints. For the first time this scenario has been run in Deuterium-Tritium (50:50). These plasmas were re-optimised to have a radiation-stable H-mode entry phase, good impurity control through edge T _i gradient screening and optimised performance with fusion power exceeding 10 MW for longer than three alpha particle slow down times, 8.3 MW averaged over 5 s and fusion energy of 45.8 MJ.

Abstract: The work describes the pedestal structure, transport and stability in an effective mass ( A _eff ) scan from pure deuterium to pure tritium plasmas using a type I ELMy H-mode dataset in which key parameters that affect the pedestal behaviour (normalized pressure, ratio of the separatrix density to the pedestal density, pedestal ion Larmor radius, pedestal collisionality and rotation) are kept as constant as possible. Experimental results show a significant increase of the density at the pedestal top with increasing A _eff , a modest reduction in the temperature and an increase in the pressure. The variations in the pedestal heights are mainly due to a change in the pedestal gradients while only small differences are observed in the pedestal width. A clear increase in the pedestal density and pressure gradients are observed from deuterium to tritium. The experimental results suggest a reduction of the pedestal inter-edge localized mode (inter-ELM) transport from deuterium to tritium. The reduction is likely in the pedestal inter-ELM particle transport, as suggested by the clear increase of the pedestal density gradients. The experimental results suggest also a possible reduction of the pedestal inter-ELM heat transport, however, the large experimental uncertainties do not allow conclusive claims on the heat diffusivity. The clear experimental reduction of η _e (the ratio between density and temperature gradient lengths) in the middle/top of the pedestal with increasing A _eff suggests that there may be a link between increasing A _eff and the reduction of electron scale turbulent transport. From the modelling point of view, an initial characterization of the behaviour of pedestal microinstabilities shows that the tritium plasma is characterized by growth rates lower than the deuterium plasmas. The pedestal stability of peeling-ballooning modes is assessed with both ideal and resistive magnetohydrodynamics (MHD). No significant effect of the isotope mass on the pedestal stability is observed using ideal MHD. Instead, resistive MHD shows a clear increase of the stability with increasing isotope mass. The resistive MHD results are in reasonable agreement with the experimental results of the normalized pedestal pressure gradient. The experimental and modelling results suggest that the main candidates to explain the change in the pedestal are a reduction in the inter-ELM transport and an improvement of the pedestal stability from deuterium to tritium.

Abstract: Disruptions in tokamak plasmas may lead to the generation of runaway electrons that have the potential to damage plasma-facing components. Improved understanding of the runaway generation process requires interpretative modelling of experiments. In this work we simulate eight discharges in the ASDEX Upgrade and JET tokamaks, where argon gas was injected to trigger the disruption. We use a fluid modelling framework with the capability to model the generation of runaway electrons through the hot-tail, Dreicer and avalanche mechanisms, as well as runaway electron losses. Using experimentally based initial values of plasma current and electron temperature and density, we can reproduce the plasma current evolution using realistic assumptions about temperature evolution and assimilation of the injected argon in the plasma. The assumptions and results are similar for the modelled discharges in ASDEX Upgrade and JET, indicating that the implemented models are applicable to machines of varying size, which is important for the modelling of future, larger machines. For the modelled discharges in ASDEX Upgrade, where the initial temperature was comparatively high, we had to assume that a large fraction of the hot-tail runaway electrons were lost in order to reproduce the measured current evolution., Comment: 17 pages, 7 figures

Abstract: A reduction of the pedestal pressure with increasing separatrix density over pedestal density (n e sep/n e ped) has been observed in JET. The physics behind this correlation is investigated. The correlation is due to two distinct mechanisms. The increase of n e sep/n e ped till ≈0.4 shifts the pedestal pressure radially outwards, decreasing the peeling-balloning stability and reducing the pressure height. The effect of the position saturates above n e sep/n e ped ≈ 0.4. For higher values, the reduction of the pedestal pressure is ascribed to increased turbulent transport and, likely, to resistive MHD effects. The increase of n e sep/n e ped above ≈0.4 reduces ∇n e /n e, increasing η e and the pedestal turbulent transport. This reduces the pressure gradient and the pedestal temperature, producing an increase in the pedestal resistivity. The work suggests that the increase in resistivity might destabilize resistive balloning modes, further reducing the pedestal stability.

Abstract: Near-infrared dispersed fluorescence measurements of 13 different atomic multiplets of neutral atomic fragments from photon induced neutral dissociation processes in NO are reported. For excitation of the molecules narrow band synchrotron photons of energy 17.2-25.8 eV were used. Neither Rydberg series nor other molecular states in NO known so far can account for the collected data. From ab initio calculations we try to obtain more information regarding the NO precursor states, and the mechanism behind the observed neutral dissociation.

Abstract: We present a theoretical and experimental analysis of non Franck-Condon effects in photoionization to the b 4Σg- state of O2+. Experimentally, by dispersing the synchrotron radiation induced O2+ b 4Σg- - a 4Πu fluorescence we derive the b 4Σg- state vibrational branching ratios in the excitation energy range 21–34 eV. The vibrational branching ratios reveal features in the region 21–28 eV, indicating strong non Franck-Condon effects. The experimental results have been analysed by computing ab initio the vibrational population branching ratios using a many-body perturbation method. Additionally, the autoionizing neutral states existing in this energy region have been studied. We have computed the energies of the valence states up to an energy of 30 eV, their transition moments for excitations from the ground state, and autoionization rates. Our calculations show, that strong non Franck-Condon effects recorded in the branching ratio spectrum (below 25 eV) are actually caused by the narrow 3σg → σu shape resonance, and its coupling to the 1πu → πg channel.

Abstract: The investigations of the radial distributions of emission from the EXTRAP-T2 reversed-field pinch (RFP) plasma show that the emission profile varies a lot, even during one plasma discharge. At central electron temperatures of about 150 eV it was expected that the emission should emerge from the plasma centre. In comparison, is always observed to radiate from the centre. Our measurements of emission have, however, shown that this is not always the case, the emission often comes from the plasma edge. The analysis of the measurements has led us to conclude that the edge emission comes from charge-exchange recombination with neutral hydrogen near the carbon first wall. These observations provide a way to estimate the change in neutral hydrogen density during local plasma-wall interaction.

Abstract: Energy distributions of ions from photodissociation of in the 17 - 34 eV energy range have been measured using photoelectron - photoion TOF spectroscopy. A high accuracy in the determination of the kinetic energies of the released fragments allows for a qualitative comparison of the different dissociation processes. In the lower energy region (17 - 20.5 eV) the production of fragments occurs mainly via resonant processes like post-dissociative autoionization (PDI), autoionization to dissociative states of the ion or dissociation from the ion pair state. In the higher energy region the fragmentation most frequently occurs due to direct photoionization to dissociative states of the ion, although the presence of PDI has also been observed. No fragments are observed with kinetic energies higher than 2 eV.

Abstract: Ionization and fragmentation processes of the NO molecule following the excitation of the nitrogen 1s electron have been studied by means of high-resolution mass-selective ion-yield measurements. The yields of and ions acquired with a quadrupole mass spectrometer (QMS) and a linear time-of-flight spectrometer (TOF) show surprising differences at the threshold region suggesting the selective attachment of the excited core electron to the centre during the dissociation of the ion. The fragmentation branching ratios corrected for the angular and kinetic energy effects are presented. The kinetic energy distributions of the and fragments have been extracted for a number of Rydberg states manifesting a significant dependence on l quantum number and energy of the primary excited Rydberg level. The lifetime of the core-excited state has been found from the shape of the low kinetic energy electron spectra acquired above the and thresholds.

Rydberg series converging to all known states in NO+ below 24 eV have been analyzed and classified and several of them are found to be predissociated by various NO+ states as well as by NO ion pair states. The complex structure in the 950–1200 A excitation region is suggested to originate from interaction between a ‘‘new’’ NO valence state at T0=77 470 cm−1 and high vibrational levels of Rydberg series converging to the NO+ ground state.

Abstract: Carbon monoxide has been excited with monochromatic synchrotron radiation in the 14–35 eV range using the Swedish synchrotron facility MAX in Lund. The decay products were studied in various detection channels such as formed CO+ and C+ ions using mass spectroscopy and visible or VUV fluorescence using photon detection. A rich line structure is observed which is attributed to CO Rydberg series converging to theX,A,B,D,C andE states in CO+. While a great number of these lines are already known, some of them are classified here for the first time. The combination of information from the fluorescence spectra and the mass spectra contribute important information concerning the autoionization and predissociation of these various Rydberg series.

Abstract: The photofragmentation of neopentane in the photon energy range 10–30 eV with synchrotron radiation is analysed and compared with previous data on mass and photoelectron spectra of this molecule. A broad maximum due to a shape resonance in the ion yield of the most abundant fragment ions is observed around 16 eV photon energy along with Rydberg series converging to the 2a 1 −1 ionization threshold. The analysis of the branching ratios of the main fragment ions hints at a preferential decay of the shape resonance through the ionization channel 3t 2 −1 .

Abstract: Synchrotron-radiation excited ion mass spectrometry has been used to study the 3s3${\mathit{p}}^{6}$np(n\ensuremath{\ge}4) resonances in argon at 25.0--29.3 eV. It is shown using a time-independent resonant scattering approach that the Fano parametrization may be applied to overlapping resonances. For the Dubau-Seaton profile an exact expression of the closed-channel phase shift is obtained. We find that regarding the window character of the Ar 3s series the Fano parameters calculated using the multichannel multiconfiguration Dirac-Fock method are in good agreement with those derived from fitting a convoluted Fano function to the measured n=4 autoionizing resonance. The Fano parameters are also derived from perfect fits to the 5\ensuremath{\le}n\ensuremath{\le}8 resonances which tests the validity of this parametrization to overlapping members of an inner-valence electron resonance series. In contrast, a parametrization of the entire series based upon the Dubau-Seaton formula did not result in a good fit without modifications. Using the same value of the shape parameter we find, however, that the n=4 resonance can be accurately represented by both the Fano and Dubau-Seaton profiles.

Abstract: Using calculations of collisional excitation rates in He-like argon (Ar XVII) and intensity factors and other data for nearby dielectronic satellites, X-ray line spectra have been synthesized as a function of electron temperature and density. The Ar XVII excitation rates were obtained from interpolations of R-matrix calculations, and are likely to be the best available at present. The resulting spectra are compared with spectra observed from high-temperature plasmas in the Alcator C tokamak. The agreement between observed spectra and those calculated using measured values of temperature and density illustrates the accuracy of the calculations, though there are small discrepancies which are likely to be connected with wavelengths or intensity factors for the Ar XVI satellites. Thus, argon X-ray line spectra can serve as a means of diagnosing low-density, astrophysical (in particular solar-flare) plasmas for which there is no independent means of measuring temperatures.

Abstract: Lifetimes have been measured for a large number of rotational levels of the A 2Δ and B 2Σ− states in CD using the high frequency deflection technique. Four B‐state levels are found to be influenced by predissociation by rotation which demands a lower value of the CD dissociation energy. The B state predissociations have also been studied using ab initio calculations. The A state levels above the dissociation limit are found to be weakly predissociated through interaction with the ground state continuum. The results are compared with earlier lifetime investigations of CH.

Abstract: The states in H2 have been selectively excited using monoenergetic synchrotron light in the range 14.4-15.5 eV and the subsequent emission was observed using a grating spectrometer. In total 22 well separated bands to E,F systems (n=3-7) were observed and rotationally analysed. The intensities of the P and R branches relative to the Q branch vary strongly in the np? to EF bands confirming the existence of predissociations of a large number of View the MathML source levels. Energy levels of the E,F Sigma_g state (vE,F=0, 1, 3, 6-10) are obtained which confirm earlier determinations from other H2 experiments.

Abstract: Scaling to larger tokamaks of high confinement plasmas with radiating edges, induced by impurities, is being studied through internationally collaborative experiments on JET. In campaigns till the end of 2000, three different regimes have been explored. A small number of limiter L-mode discharges seeded with neon have most closely repeated the approach used on TEXTOR-94, but different collisionality and particle transport in JET impede central peaking of the density associated with improved confinement. Divertor L-modes at intermediate density, again with neon injection, have pursued transiently enhanced states found on DIII-D. Confinement up to H-mode quality, together with radiation fractions of approximate to40%, have briefly been obtained, though central Z(eff) quickly increases. Most effectively, neon and argon seeding of higher density ELMy H-modes formed mainly at low triangularity on the septum of the MkIIGB divertor, resembling a pumped-limiter arrangement, have been examined. Good confinement has been sustained at densities close to the Greenwald level in 'afterpuff' (AP) phases following the end of main gas fuelling, for little change of central Z(eff) but up to approximate to60% radiation. Outstanding normalized properties up to H-97 = 0.99 at f(Gwd) = 0.94 have thus been achieved, above the conventional H-mode density limit for diverted plasmas. Stationarity of states has also been extended to many energy confinement times by including low, extra gas inputs in the 'AP', suggestive of an optimized fuelling scheme. Further development in 2001 is reported separately in [1]. Accompanying ELMs are generally reduced in frequency though not evidently in size, electron pedestal pressure being almost unchanged from unseeded behaviour. There are indications of the most favourable impurity species scaling with plasma parameters, performance, radiation and its concentration within a mantle all increasing with argon compared to neon in JET. These benefits in terms of integrated properties are just as required for long burning pulses in ITER, supporting its use of a radiating mantle to assist not only power exhaust but performance too. Impurity-seeded H-modes can therefore contribute directly to next-step scenario development.

Abstract: In JET discharges where lower hybrid heating and current drive (LHCD) is applied early during the current ramp, a region of the plasma with zero current density is formed near the axis. At the boundary of this region the current density is large and B? increases rapidly over a small distance. In the central region the safety factor, q, is effectively infinite, but this falls steeply in the boundary region. Outside the boundary region q reaches a minimum, where the magnetic shear s?r/q (dq/dr) becomes zero. The formation of this region of zero current is dependent on both the heating and the current drive effects of the LHCD. When LHCD is switched off the current profile begins to relax towards the resistive peaked current distribution of fully inductive tokamak operation. If LHCD is not used in the current rise then these current profiles are not established. Although the physical mechanism exists to drive the central plasma current below zero, in most cases it appears to be prevented from going negative. At least one MHD mechanism has been identified which could be responsible for this. The presence of the zero central current is closely linked to the periodic relaxation events seen in these discharges. In these discharges, internal transport barriers have been observed with additional heating powers substantially below the values required to obtain barriers in monotonic q profile cases.

Abstract: Ion-branching ratios following the relaxation of C (1${\mathit{s}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}1}$${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\pi}}}^{\mathrm{*}}$,nl\ensuremath{\lambda},${\mathit{v}}^{\ensuremath{'}}$) synchrotron light-excited, vibrationally resolved resonances in CO have been measured using a time-of-flight spectrometer at high extraction voltages. Additional measurements at low extraction voltages (higher kinetic-energy resolution) have enabled an estimate of the kinetic-energy distributions (KED's) of the emitted ${\mathrm{C}}^{+}$, ${\mathrm{O}}^{+}$, ${\mathrm{C}}^{2+}$, and ${\mathrm{O}}^{2+}$ ions. Large differences in these distributions are observed at various resonances and, for instance, a doorway-state dependence of the KED has been found for the 3s\ensuremath{\sigma} and 3p\ensuremath{\pi} Rydberg resonances. Abstract: Several improvements to the MAST plant and diagnostics have facilitated new studies advancing the physics basis for ITER and DEMO, as well as for future spherical tokamaks (STs). Using the increased heating capabilities P NBI ⩽ 3.8 MW H-mode at I p = 1.2 MA was accessed showing that the energy confinement on MAST scales more weakly with I p and more strongly with B t than in the ITER IPB98(y, 2) scaling. Measurements of the fuel retention of shallow pellets extrapolate to an ITER particle throughput of 70% of its original designed total throughput capacity. The anomalous momentum diffusion, χϕ, is linked to the ion diffusion, χi, with a Prandtl number close to P ϕ ≈ χϕ/χi ≈ 1, although χi approaches neoclassical values. New high spatial resolution measurements of the edge radial electric field, E r , show that the position of steepest gradients in electron pressure and E r (i.e. shearing rate) are coincident, but their magnitudes are not linked. The T e pedestal width on MAST scales with rather than ρpol. The edge localized mode (ELM) frequency for type-IV ELMs, new in MAST, was almost doubled using n = 2 resonant magnetic perturbations from a set of four external coils (n = 1, 2). A new internal 12 coil set (n ⩽ 3) has been commissioned. The filaments in the inter-ELM and L-mode phase are different from ELM filaments, and the characteristics in L-mode agree well with turbulence calculations. A variety of fast particle driven instabilities were studied from 10 kHz saturated fishbone like activity up to 3.8 MHz compressional Alfvén eigenmodes. Fast particle instabilities also affect the off-axis NBI current drive, leading to fast ion diffusion of the order of 0.5 m2 s−1 and a reduction in the driven current fraction from 40% to 30%. EBW current drive start-up is demonstrated for the first time in a ST generating plasma currents up to 55 kA. Many of these studies contributed to the physics basis of a planned upgrade to MAST.

40. Fluorescence emission from photo-fragments after resonant S 2p excitations in H2S.

Abstract: Visible-UV fluorescence emission of gas-phase hydrogen sulfide, H2S, has been studied at the S 2p edge with synchrotron radiation excitation. Dispersed fluorescence measurements in the wavelength range 300–900 nm were taken at several photon energies corresponding to the excitations of the S 2p electrons to the unoccupied molecular and Rydberg orbitals. The spectra reveal fluorescence from the H, S, S+, HS and HS+ photo-fragments. H is found to be the strongest emitter at Rydberg excitations, while the emission from S+ is dominant at the molecular resonances and above the S 2p ionization thresholds. The intensities of hydrogen Lyman-α (122 nm), Balmer-α (656 nm), Balmer-β (486 nm) transitions as well as the visible-UV total fluorescence yield (300–900 nm) and the total ion yield were measured by scanning the photon energy in small steps across the S 2p edge. The different Balmer lines show some sensitivity to the specific core excitations, which is, however, not so strong as that recently observed in the water molecule [E. Melero García, A. Kivimäki, L. Abstract: Synchrotron radiation-excited ion mass spectrometry has been used to study the 3s3p6np (n≥4) resonances in argon at 25.0 - 29.3 eV. It is shown using a time-independent resonant scattering approach that the Fano formalism may be applied to overlapping resonances. For the Dubau-Seaton profile an exact expression of the closed-channel phase shift is obtained. We find that regarding the window character of the Ar 3s series the Fano parameters calculated using the multichannel multiconfiguration Dirac-Fock method are in good agreement with those derived from fitting a convoluted Fano function to the measured n = 4 autoionizing resonance. The Fano parameters are also derived from fits to the 5≤n≤8 resonances which tests the validity of this parametrization to overlapping members of an inner-valence electron resonance series. In contrast, a parametrization of the entire series based upon the Dubau-Seaton formula did not result in a good fit without modifications. Using the same value of the shape parameter we find, however, that the n = 4 resonance can be accurately represented by both the Fano and Dubau-Seaton profiles.

Abstract: Tunable synchrotron radiation makes possible detailed studies of molecular photoionization and photodissociation. This is particular true if the induced reactions may be studied in various decay channels such as formed ions and positive and negative fragments as well as fluorescence in different wavelength regions. We have performed studies of this kind in the low energy range (14-35 eV) using the Swedish synchrotron facility MAX in Lund. A special detection channel has been constructed for the purpose involving two sections, one low pressure chamber with a quadrupole mass spectrometer and one high pressure chamber for fluorescence detection using a variety of photomultipliers

Abstract: The JET 2019–2020 scientific and technological programme exploited the results of years of concerted scientific and engineering work, including the ITER-like wall (ILW: Be wall and W divertor) installed in 2010, improved diagnostic capabilities now fully available, a major neutral beam injection upgrade providing record power in 2019–2020, and tested the technical and procedural preparation for safe operation with tritium. Research along three complementary axes yielded a wealth of new results. Firstly, the JET plasma programme delivered scenarios suitable for high fusion power and alpha particle (a) physics in the coming D–T campaign (DTE2), with record sustained neutron rates, as well as plasmas for clarifying the impact of isotope mass on plasma core, edge and plasma-wall interactions, and for ITER pre-fusion power operation. The efficacy of the newly installed shattered pellet injector for mitigating disruption forces and runaway electrons was demonstrated. Secondly, research on the consequences of long-term exposure to JET-ILW plasma was completed, with emphasis on wall damage and fuel retention, and with analyses of wall materials and dust particles that will help validate assumptions and codes for design and operation of ITER and DEMO. Thirdly, the nuclear technology programme aiming to deliver maximum technological return from operations in D, T and D–T benefited from the highest D–D neutron yield in years, securing results for validating radiation transport and activation codes, and nuclear data for ITER. Abstract: Since the last IAEA conference, the scientific programme of JET has focused on the qualification of the integrated operating scenarios for ITER and on physics issues essential for the consolidation of design choices and the efficient exploitation of ITER. Particular attention has been given to the characterization of the edge plasma, pedestal energy and edge localized modes (ELMs), and their impact on plasma facing components (PFCs). Various ELM mitigation techniques have been assessed for all ITER operating scenarios using active methods such as resonant magnetic field perturbation, rapid variation of the radial field and pellet pacing. Abstract: Fluorescence emission at the N 1s edge of the N2 molecule has been studied with synchrotron radiation excitation. The partial fluorescence yields in the ultraviolet (250-320 nm) and visible (300-650 nm) wavelengths were collected by scanning the photon energy across the core-to-Rydberg excitations and the N 1s ionization potential (IP). When compared to the total ion yield, both fluorescence yields are most enhanced at the excitations to high Rydberg orbitals. A discrete structure appears just below the N 1s IP only in the UV yield and is assigned to core-valence doubly excited states. Dispersed fluorescence spectra in selected wavelength windows were measured at several photon energies in order to find out which fragments are responsible for the enhancement of fluorescence emission just below the N 1s IP. The excitation functions determined and considerations on de-excitation pathways indicate that the main responsible is the N+ ion. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: The intensity of fluorescence emission in the wavelength region of 250-320 nm has been measured across the N 1s - p* resonance of the N2 molecule. It displays a narrower line shape than the total ion yield recorded simultaneously. We explain the finding by the particularities of the resonant Auger transitions from the N 1s[?]1p* state to the D2Pg state in N+2 and by the subsequent D2Pg- A2Pu emission. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
