The mobile food record™ (mFR™) is a novel app that allows for the tracking of individual food waste and addresses the limitations of current methods to accurately quantify food waste. Extension educators may use data from the mFR™ to create educational initiatives for food waste prevention and education that may be implemented in settings such as schools and universities. The mFR is an innovative application that simplifies the process of collecting food-based data and accurately quantifying food waste for use in Extension.

BackgroundWe examined the utility of self-rated adherence to dietary and physical activity (PA) prescriptions as a method to monitor intervention compliance and facilitate goal setting during the Healthy Diet and Lifestyle Study (HDLS). In addition, we assessed participants’ feedback of HDLS. HDLS is a randomized pilot intervention that compared the effect of intermittent energy restriction combined with a Mediterranean diet (IER + MED) to a Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet, with matching PA regimens, for reducing visceral adipose tissue area (VAT).MethodsAnalyses included the 59 (98%) participants who completed at least 1 week of HDLS. Dietary and PA adherence scores were collected 8 times across 12 weeks, using a 0–10 scale (0 = not at all, 4 = somewhat, and 10 = following the plan very well). Adherence scores for each participant were averaged and assigned to high and low adherence categories using the group median (7.3 for diet, 7.1 for PA). Mean changes in VAT and weight from baseline to 12 weeks are reported by adherence level, overall and by randomization arm. Participants’ feedback at completion and 6 months post-intervention were examined.ResultsMean ± SE, dietary adherence was 6.0 ± 0.2 and 8.2 ± 0.1, for the low and high adherence groups, respectively. For PA adherence, mean scores were 5.9 ± 0.2 and 8.5 ± 0.2, respectively. Compared to participants with low dietary adherence, those with high adherence lost significantly more VAT (22.9 ± 3.7 cm2vs. 11.7 ± 3.9 cm2[95% CI, − 22.1 to − 0.3]) and weight at week 12 (5.4 ± 0.8 kg vs. 3.5 ± 0.6 kg [95% CI, − 3.8 to − 0.0]). For PA, compared to participants with low adherence, those with high adherence lost significantly more VAT (22.3 ± 3.7 cm2vs. 11.6 ± 3.6 cm2[95% CI, − 20.7 to − 0.8]). Participants’ qualitative feedback of HDLS was positive and the most common response, on how to improve the study, was to provide cooking classes.ConclusionsResults support the use of self-rated adherence as an effective method to monitor dietary and PA compliance and facilitate participant goal setting. Participants’ qualitative feedback of HDLS was positive and the most common response, on how to improve the study, was to provide cooking education classes.Conclusions: Our results support the use of self-rated adherence to dietary and physical activity prescriptions as an effective method to monitor compliance and facilitate participant goal setting during a behavioral modification intervention. Study strategies were found to be effective with promoting compliance to dietary and physical activity prescriptions. There has been, to our knowledge, little research exploring the association between diet quality and visceral adipose tissue (VAT) among a mulitethnic population aged 18-80 y.ObjectiveThe primary objective of this cross-sectional analysis was to examine the association between diet quality [Healthy Eating Index-2010 (HEI-2010) scores] and VAT among a multiethnic population of young, middle, and older aged adults in the United States. Secondary objectives were to repeat these analyses with overall adiposity and blood-based biomarkers for type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease risk as outcome measures.MethodsA total of 540 adults (dropped out: nn=n4; age: 18-40 y, nn=n220; 40-60 y, nn=n183; 60-80 y, nn=n133) were recruited across 3 sites (Honolulu County, San Francisco, and Baton Rouge) for the Shape Up! Adults study. Whole-body DXA, anthropometry, fasting blood draw, and questionnaires (food frequency, physical activity, and demographic characteristics) were completed. Linear regression was used to assess the associations between HEI-2010 tertiles and VAT and secondary outcome measures among all participants and age-specific strata, while adjusting for known confounders.ResultsVAT, BMI (kg/m2), body fat percentage, total body fat, trunk fat, insulin, and insulin resistance were inversely related to diet quality (all P values ln0.004). When stratified by age, diet quality was inversely associated with VAT among participants aged 60-80 y (P ln0.006) and VAT/subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) among participants aged 40-60 y (P ln0.008).ConclusionsHigher-quality diet was associated with lower VAT, overall adiposity, and insulin resistance among this multiethnic population of young, middle, and older aged adults with ages ranging from 18 to 80 y. More specifically, adherence to a high-quality diet may minimize VAT accumulation in adults aged 60-80 y and preferentially promote storage of SAT compared with VAT in adults aged 40-60 y.This study was registered at clinicaltrials.gov as NCT03637855.

OBJECTIVES: To assess, in a large multiethnic cross-sectional study, associations between the Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII®) and total adiposity and ectopic fat, and whether these associations are mediated by gut microbiota (GM). METHODS: Analyses used data from 1,655 participants (812 men, 843 women, 60–77 y) in the Adiposity Phenotype Study. At clinic visit (2013–2015), DXA-based total fat mass, MRI-based visceral adipose tissue (VAT) area at L1-L5 (cm(2)), and liver fat (% volume) were measured. Participants provided a stool sample and completed a validated food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). Stool bacterial DNA was amplified and the V1-V3 region of the 16S rRNA gene was sequenced. As ratios, GM data were centered log-ratio transformed. DII score was computed from FFQ data, with a higher DII representing a more inflammatory diet. The relationships between DII, GM and adiposity phenotypes were examined using linear regression and mediation analyses. Bootstrap 95% CI were calculated for the indirect effect (IE). OBJECTIVES: Test if an intermittent energy restriction with a Mediterranean diet (IER + MED) preferentially promotes loss of visceral adipose tissue (VAT) over subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT), with minimal changes to resting energy expenditure (REE) and physical activity level (PAL), compared to an active control, the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet, in an East Asian adult population. METHODS: Men and women in Hawai'i (n = 60, aged 35–55, BMI 25–40, VAT ≥ 90cm(2) for men and ≥ 80cm(2) for women) of East Asian origin, were randomized equally to IER + MED (2 days with 70% energy restriction and 5 days euenergetic MED) or a 7 day euenergetic DASH diet for 12 weeks. Dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) for estimation of VAT and abdominal SAT, REE through indirect calorimetry, and physical activity questionnaires were collected at baseline and week 12. Four-days mobile food records were completed at baseline, weeks 5–6 and 11. Understanding of behavioral factors associated with obesity is of importance in addressing this issue. This study examined the association between cognitive restraint, uncontrolled eating, emotional eating and body mass index (BMI) and amount of food plated, consumed, leftovers, and leftover food thrown into the trash (food wasted) in early adolescent girls nine to 13 years in O&rsquo, ahu, Hawai&rsquo, i (n = 93). Food plated, consumed, leftovers, and food wasted were estimated using a three-day mobile food record&trade, (mFR). Weight and height were measured to compute BMI (kg/m2). The three-factor eating questionnaire provided a score from 0 to 100 for cognitive restraint, uncontrolled eating, and emotional eating. Higher scores are indicative of greater cognitive restraint, uncontrolled eating, and emotional eating. Pearson&rsquo, s correlations were computed to examine the relationship between three factor eating scores and BMI. General linear models were conducted to examine the effect of each of three-factor eating scores on food plated, consumed, leftovers, and food wasted. Cognitive restraint was positively correlated with BMI (r = 0.36, p &lt, 0.001) and with BMI z-score (r = 0.40, p &lt, 0.001). There were no associations between three-factor eating scores and food plated, consumed, leftovers, and food wasted at lunch. However, at dinner, total energy plated, left over, and food wasted increased by 4.24 kcal/day (p = 0.030), 1.67 kcal/day (p = 0.002), and 0.93 kcal/day (p = 0.031), respectively, with a unit increase in uncontrolled eating score. Similarly, total energy plated and energy left over at dinner increased by 3.40 kcal/day (p = 0.045) and 1.51 kcal/day (p = 0.001), respectively, with a unit increase in emotional eating score. Additional research should examine the specific roles of cognitive restraint, uncontrolled eating, emotional eating and food waste in the development of obesity in adolescents.

The Healthy Eating Index-2015 (HEI-2015) was created to assess conformance of dietary intake with the Dietary Guidelines for Americans (DGA) 2015–2020. We assessed the association between the HEI-2015 and mortality from all-cause, cardiovascular disease (CVD), and cancer in the Multiethnic Cohort (MEC). White, African American, Native Hawaiian, Japanese American, and Latino adults (n > 215,000) from Hawaii and California completed a quantitative food-frequency questionnaire at study enrollment. HEI-2015 scores were divided into quintiles for men and women. Radar graphs were used to demonstrate how dietary components contributed to HEI-2015 scores. Mortality was documented over 17–22 years of follow-up. Hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were computed using Cox proportional hazards models. ObjectiveTo determine perception v. actual intakes of energy-dense nutrient-poor ‘junk food’ (JF) and sugar-sweetened beverages (SSB) in young adults, using the mobile food record (mFR).DesignBefore-and-after eating images using a 4 d mFR were assessed for standardised 600 kJ (143 kcal) servings of JF and SSB (excluding diet drinks). Participants reported their concern about the health aspects of their diet, perceptions and intentions regarding JF and SSB.SettingPerth, Western Australia.SubjectsAdults (n 246) aged 18–30 years.ResultsThe mean (sd) intake of JF+SSB was 3·7 (2·0) servings/d. Women thinking about drinking less SSB consumed more SSB servings/d (1·5 (1·2)) than men (0·7 (0·5); PPPPPConclusionsPerceptions and attitudes regarding JF and SSB were associated with level of consumption. Those not thinking about cutting down their intake of these foods represent an important target group as they consume more than their peers. Further research is needed to identify how amenable young adults are to changing their intake, particularly given the lack of attention paid to the health aspects of their diet.

Salvage cystectomy for the treatment of transitional cell carcinoma following radical external beam radiation therapy is a considerable surgical undertaking. The resulting fibrosis secondary to radiation causes welding of tissue planes, making surgical dissection more difficult. As the experience of urologists has increased over the last few decades, the high operative mortality seen in early experiences with salvage cystectomy has lessened. To define the nature and risk of complications associated with the type of urinary diversion we analyzed the clinical course of 77 patients. The urinary diversion chosen was the ileal conduit in 56 patients and cutaneous ureterostomy in 16. In accordance with literature, continent reservoirs were very limited due to a higher complication rate. Although continent cutaneous diversion, according to the Indiana pouch technique, may be performed safely in highly irradiated patients, orthotopic bladder replacement should still be considered critically.

— The incidence of upper urinary tract transitional cell carcinoma (UTTCC) following a bladder cancer has been studied in 1731 urothelial tumours from 1984 to 1995. The UTTCC were 88: 59 primitive, 6 synchronous and 23 metachronous after a bladder cancer (1672). Of the 23 metachronous UTTCC, 17 followed TURBT (17/1310 = 1.3%): the latency period was very long (64.8 months); grading and staging were mostly similar to the foregoing bladder tumours. A vesicoureteral reflux raised the metachronous UTTCC rate to 17.6%. A neoplastic distal ureter was found during radical cystectomy in 2.24%. During the follow-up of 362 radical cystectomies 6 (1.65%) metachronous UTTCC were recorded. A metachronous UTTCC is always a poor prognostic sign. There are some controversies concerning this topic such as: the role of IVP and urine cytology in the follow-up of bladder cancer, the management of a vesicoureteral reflux in bladder cancer and the choice of a urinary diversion in the event of an upper urinary tract at high risk for UTTCC.

Results: In results of genotyping groups of patients with breast cancer by allelle specific polymerase chain reaction in the real time mode, were observed in 3 patients have heterozygote mutation of BRCA1 5382insC (4.5%) presented possible “founder” mutation. Among them 1 patient had primary multiple form of breast cancer and 2 patients had hereditary disease history. Mutation of BRCA1 4153delA, BRCA1 185delAG, BRCA1 300T>G and BRCA2 6174delT gene were not detected in all cases. Studied mutation was not observed in control group. Conclusion: Result of our study confirmed contribution of mutation 5382insC gene BRCA1 in developing of breast cancer in Uzbek population. Considering high penetration of disease in carrier of mutation BRCA1, is expedient include testing 5382insC mutation in screening program in breast cancer prophylactics in Uzbekistan.

Awareness of possible forthcoming bad weather conditions (fog, snow or heavy rain) as well as traffic potentially dangerous situations (car accidents or traffic jam) can be vital to the driver specially in today heavy traffic congested environment. A short/medium range realy warning, system improving efficiency and safety of driving is described. The system we call Hand Shake consists in an intervehicular short range radio link which automatically creates an interchange of information among the vehicles. A vision enhancement system is as well described. It consists of a remote pulse intensified camera associated to a pulse lighting method of the scenery. The first one reduce the damping effect in the light propagation through fog and the second one reduce the backscattering effect due to fog. Both system which can usefully complement radar systems are under evaluation in FIAT and show promising results. The project are carried out as part of the participation of Fiat to the Prometheus program.

When in June 1973 the President of Uruguay and the Uruguayan military dissolved Parliament, they put an end to what had been considered until then as one of the most stable liberal democratic regimes in Latin America. The reaction of many observers of Uruguayan development can be summed up in the following question posed by one of them: ‘How did a nation that was regarded as so different from and superior to its neighbours, so quickly “fail” and come to resemble them?’1

Utilizando un método de cuantificación del electromiograma, se investigaron parte de los mecanismos centrales y periféricos responsables de la fatiga muscular en enfermos crónicamente denervados y en pacientes con compromiso muscular primitivo. Se observó en los denervados que los mecanismos de fatiga muscular, no difieren mayormente de los observados en el grupo de sujetos sanos, por el contrario, en los miopáticos a más del componente central, existen otros de orden periférico, tales como la pérdida de unidades motoras funcionantes durante el esfuerzo y el bloqueo temporario de la transmisión neuromuscular, que contribuye al desarrollo de la fatiga. In a group of patients chronically denervated and other with primary muscle involvement a search was made for mechanisms involved in the muscular fatigue. It was found that there was no major differences between patients chronically denervated and controls, while in those others with primary muscle disorders a loss of functional motor units during effort and a transient impairment of neuromuscular transmission play a role together with the central events normally occuring in fatigue.

Se estúdio la fatiga muscular en 13 sujetos normales; para ello, fueron sometidos a un esfuerzo sostenido durante 10 minutos previo y posterior, al cual se realizo la medición de la onda M máxima. Durante el esfuerzo y cada 2 minutos, se obtuvieron cuantificaciones de la frecuencia y duración de las ondas positivas y negativas del EMG. Los resultados, mostraron diferencias significativas de estos valores, en función del tiempo de esfuerzo realizado, mientras que las mediciones de la onda M máxima inicial y final, no fueron diferentes, todo lo cual lleva a jerarquizar el factor central como el más importante en el desarrollo de fatiga, bajo nuestras condiciones de estudio, que son además de sencilla aplicación clínica. Muscular fatigue was investigated in 13 healthy people by employing a simple device which comprises a computer on line with a conventional EMG equipment able to automatically measure the frequency and duration of free-run EMG recording. The procedure was carried out in the extensor digitorum brevis muscle by using surface electrodes throughout 10 minutes of voluntary maximal effort. The maximal M wave as well as the muscle response to repetitive nerve maximal stimulation was also explored at the beginning and at the end of the experiment. It was observed a decrease of the potentials frequency discharge and an increase of their duration without major changes in the M wave amplitude neither in the muscle response to the repetitive nerve discharge. The findings pointed out to the central factors as the main responsible for the development of muscular fatigue.

A group of patients with Bell's palsy were studied in order to disclose the presence of subclinical peripheral nerve involvement. 20 patients, 8 male and 12 female, with recent Bell's palsy as their unique disease were examined, in all cases other causes of polyneuropathy were ruled out. Patients were investigated with CSF examination, facial nerve latencies in the affected and in the sound sides, and maximal motor nerve conduction velocities, as well as motor terminal latencies from the right median and peroneal nerves. CSF laboratory examination was normal in all cases. Facial nerve latencies were abnormal in all patients in the affected side, and they differed significantly from those of control group in the clinically sound side. Half of the patients showed abnormal values in the maximal motor nerve conduction velocities and motor terminal latencies of the right median and peroneal nerves. These results agree with previous reports which have pointed out that other cranial nerves may be affected in Bell's palsy. However, we have found a higher frequency of peripheral nerve involvement in this entity. These findings, support the hypothesis that in some patients Bell's palsy is the component of a more widespread disease, affecting other cranial and peripheral nerves. Um grupo de pacientes com paralisia de Bell foi estudado com o objetivo de descobrir a presença de comprometimento nervoso periférico subclínico. 20 pacientes, 8 homens e 12 mulheres com paralisia de Bell recente como única enfermidade, foram examinados. Em todos os casos outras causas de polineuropatia foram excluídas. Os pacientes foram estudados com exames de líquido cefalorraqueano; latência distal nos nervos faciais do lado afetado e do lado sadio e velocidade de condução motora máxima; latência distal dos nervos mediano e peroneiro direitos. O exame de LCR foi normal em tcdos os casos. A latência do nervo facial foi anormal em todos os pacientes no lado afetado e, no lado clinicamente sadio, diferia significativamente do grupo controle. A metade dos pacientes mostrou valores anormais na velocidade motora máxima e/ou na latência distal de ambos os nervos, como sejam: mediano e peroneiro. Esses resultados estão de acordo com publicações anteriores nas quais se afirma que outros nervos craneanos podem estar afetados na paralisia de Bell. Temos encontrado uma elevada frequência de polineuropatia nesta enfermidade. Estes achados nos levam a crer que, em alguns enfermos, a paralisia de Bell é um componente de uma doença mais disseminada afetando outros nervos craneanos e periféricos.

The experimental difficulty in distinguishing between double absorption and induced absorption is discussed. It is shown that KCl and CaF 2 crystals with a diminutive amount of impurities can give rise to apparent double absorption signals even though double absorption is impossible due to energy considerations. The threshold for laser induced damage was found correlated with impurities.

Un grupo de 12 pacientes con cifras elevadas de plombemia y disminuidas de ALA D fueron estudiados electrofisiológicamente. Se efectuaron las siguientes determinaciones: amplitud de potencial evocado muscular; latencia distal motora; velocidad de conducción motora en los nervios mediano, ciático poplíteo externo y radial; velocidad de conducción sensitiva y amplitud del potencial evocado sensitivo de nervio en el mediano; exploración electromiográfica convencional; estudio de la transmisión neuromuscular, mediante estimulación repetitiva del nervio ciático popliteo externo a diversas frecuencias, con registro de la amplitud del potencial en músculo tibial anterior. Los datos obtenidos fueron comparados con controles. Se buscaron correlaciones entre las determinaciones bioquímicas y los diferentes hallazgos electrofisiológicos que a su vez se correlacionaron entre si y también con el tiempo de evolución de la intoxicación. Los hallazgos pusieron de manifiesto la presencia de neuropatía axonal junto a moderada desmielinización. La exploración de la transmisión neuromuscular mostró ocasional decremento o incremento de la amplitud del potencial muscular evocado, hechos que suponen cierta participación de la unión neuromuscular. Se halló correlación solamente entre disminución de ALA D y la disminución de las amplitudes del potencial sensitivo del mediano y el evocado muscular del mismo nervio y con la disminución de la VCM del nervio radial. Una débil relación se observó entre el tiempo de exposición y la disminución de la VCS del nervio mediano y VCM del radial. Las determinaciones bioquímicas y el tiempo de exposición transcurridos no probaron ser parámetros sensibles para determinar el grado de afectación del sistema nervioso periférico. El conjunto do hallazgos sugiere que el desarrollo de la neuropatía puede estar ligado a factores individuales de predisposición al daño nervioso. A comprehensive electrophysiological examination of the peripheral nervous system was carried out in 12 patients who proved to be toxicated with lead (high lead blood levels, and diminished activity of the delta-aminolevulinate dehydratase, ALA D, in erythrocytes). Maximal motor nerve conduction velocities and terminal latencies were investigated in the median, radial and deep peroneal nerves. Also the amplitude of the evoked muscle response (M wave) was measured in thenar, extensor longus and extensor digitorium brevis muscles. Sensory conduction velocity and amplitude of the nerve compound action potential were measured at the median nerve. Tibialis anterior muscle responses to deep peroneal nerve repetitive stimulation were also explored. Conventional needle electromyogram was performed in the deltoid and tibialis anterior muscles. Slight diminished motor and sensory conduction velocities were found as well as a reduction of the amplitude of the evoked muscle response of the compound sensory action potential. Four out of the 12 patients tested showed either décrémentai or incremental amplitude of the muscle response with nerve repetitive stimulation. A electromyographical diminished interference pattern was found in all patients tested. Most of the remaining motor unit potentials were fragmented or polyphasic. Just one patient disclosed potentials of enhanced duration and amplitude. No relationship was found between blood lead levels or ALA D erythrocytes concentration and the different electrophysiological tests performed, except between reduced ALA D concentration and diminished amplitudes of the M wave and of the sensory compound action potential, and also between ALA D and diminished radial motor conduction velocity. Only a slight relationship was found between timing of toxication and diminished sensory conduction velocity of the median nerve and motor conduction velocity of the radial nerve. Biochemical determination and timing of toxication did not prove to be useful tools for predicting peripheral nervous system damage. The findings suggest that the neuropathy which develops in lead intoxication is probably related mainly to individual predisposition rather than to lead blood levels and ALA D erythrocytes concentration.

Ciclopiroxolamine's action has been evaluated in 20 cases of dermatophytosis. The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) for the strains was determined in vitro before treatment (To), after the 4th day (T4), and after the 7th day (T7) of treatment, in relation with the drug's fungicide effect. No significant variation was observed among the MIC values. By comparing the MIC of T4 versus the MIC of To a 0.93 coefficient of linear correlation was obtained while in comparing T7 versus T4 the coefficient was equivalent to 1.0. After 7 days of treatment 5 patients clinically recovered, 11 improved and 4 showed no improvement. Drug tolerance was excellent except for one case.

Para evaluar algunos de los componentes de la fatiga muscular en el daño piramidal, se seleccionó un grupo de 15 pacientes con hemiparesia faciobraquiocrural de severidad variable, los cuales fueron sometidos a un esfuerzo muscular, durante el cual se evaluaron los cambios de la frecuencia y duración de los potenciales positivos y negativos del EMG, asi como los sufridos por la onda M máxima al principio y fin del mismo. El estudio fue realizado en el lado parético, el contralateral y en un grupo control de voluntarios sanos, comparándose los resultados de los 3 grupos. Las curvas de frecuencia y duración del lado parético, el sano y el control mantuvieron las mismas tendencias, así como fue homologable el comportamiento de la onda M máxima en los 3 casos, lo cual indica que en la espasticidad, debido a daño de la vía piramidal, al igual que en la población normal, bajo las presentes condiciones de estudio, es el factor central el condicionante principal en el desarrollo de fatiga muscular. In a group of patients chronically denervated and other with primary muscle involvement a search was made for mechanisms involved in the muscular fatigue. It was found that there was no major differences between patients chronically denervated and controls, while in those others with primary muscle disorders a loss of functional motor units during effort and a transient impairment of neuromuscular transmission play a role together with the central events normally occurring in fatigue.

Muscular fatigue was investigated in 13 healthy people by employing a simple device which comprises a computer on line with a conventional EMG equipment able to automatically measure the frequency and duration of free-run EMG recording. The procedure was carried out in the extensor digitorum brevis muscle by using surface electrodes throughout 10 minutes of voluntary maximal effort. The maximal M wave as well as the muscle response to repetitive nerve maximal stimulation was also explored at the beginning and at the end of the experiment. It was observed a decrease of the potentials frequency discharge and an increase of their duration without major changes in the M wave amplitude neither in the muscle response to the repetitive nerve discharge. The findings pointed out to the central factors as the mean responsible for the development of muscular fatigue.

A new technique useful to set a lower limit for the lifetime of the intermediate state of two‐photon absorption processes is described. The technique is applied to the case of two‐photon absorption in CdS.

Attenuation of a tunable probe beam is observed in CS 2 in the presence of the intense radiation from a ruby laser. The dependence on probe beam wavelength and laser intensity is measured.

The two‐photon absorption spectrum of ZnS at RT and LNT is presented. The magnitude of the nonlinear absorption cross section is discussed with respect to pumping by means of two‐photon absorption and with respect to second‐harmonic attenuation in ZnS.
