Abstract

We report on the search for gamma-ray emission from 20 magnetars using six years of Fermi Large Area Telescope observations. No significant evidence for gamma-ray emission from any of the currently known magnetars is found. We derived the most stringent upper limits to date on the 0.1–10 GeV emission of Galactic magnetars, which are estimated between ∼10−12 and 10−11 erg s−1 cm−2. We searched gamma-ray pulsations for the four magnetars having reliable ephemerides over the observing period, but detected none. We also report updated morphologies and spectral properties of seven spatially extended gamma-ray sources, which are most likely attributed to supernova remnants associated with or adjacent to the magnetars.

Abstract

Until April 2007 the MAGIC telescope used a 300 MSamples/s FADC system to sample the shaped PMT signals produced by the captured Cherenkov photons of air showers. Different algorithms to reconstruct the signal from the read-out samples (extractors) have been implemented and are described and compared. Criteria based on the obtained charge and time resolution/bias are defined and used to judge the different extractors, by applying them to calibration, cosmic and pedestal signals. The paper describes the different methods, used in the MAGIC experiment, to unfold experimental energy distributions of cosmic ray particles (gamma-rays). Questions and problems related to the unfolding are discussed. Various procedures are proposed which can help to make the unfolding robust and reliable. Abstract

The Major Atmospheric Gamma-ray Imaging Čerenkov Telescope (MAGIC) will be the first ground-based Čerenkov telescope able to detect photons with E > 30 GeV . This region of the electromagnetic spectrum, yet unexplored, is fundamental for pulsar physics since theoretical models foreseen a cut-off in the pulsed emission at tens of GeV. In order to perform timing analysis of pulsars, accuracy below milliseconds in the time stamp of the detected event is needed. In this work, we present the timing system of the MAGIC telescope and the first timing analysis performed on real data.

Abstract

Here we discuss two related aspects of the detection of low energy gammas by IACT's (Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescope): the effect of the Earth's magnetic field and a possible novel trigger technique. The Earth's magnetic field affects the development of extensive air showers (EAS), spreading the collected photons and, therefore, decreasing the sensitivity of the Cherenkov telescope. The new effects that appear in low energy showers can be partially offset modifying the trigger criteria. The result is a large collection area (> 1000 m2) below 10 GeV for a typical 17 m class telescope, increasing its sensitivity at these energies.

Abstract

The nearby dwarf spheroidal galaxy Draco with its high mass to light ratio is one of the most auspicious targets for indirect dark matter searches. Annihilation of hypothetical DM particles can result in high-energy gamma-rays, e.g. from neutralino annihilation in the supersymmetric framework. With the MAGIC telescope a search for a possible DM signal originating from Draco was performed during 2007. The analysis of the data results in a flux upper limit of 1.1x10^-11 photons cm^-2 sec^-1 for photon energies above 140 GeV, assuming a point like source. Furthermore, a comparison with predictions from supersymmetric models is given. While our results do not constrain the mSUGRA phase parameter space, a very high flux enhancement can be ruled out., Comment: Accepted for publication by Astrophysical Journal

Abstract

We observed the first known very high energy (VHE) gamma-ray emitting unidentified source, TeV J2032+4130, for 94 hours with the MAGIC telescope. The source was detected with a significance of 5.6 sigma. The flux, position, and angular extension are compatible with the previous ones measured by the HEGRA telescope system five years ago. The integral flux amounts to (4.5+-0.3stat+-0.35sys)x10^{-13} ph cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ above 1 TeV. The source energy spectrum, obtained with the lowest energy threshold to date, is compatible with a single power law with a hard photon index of Gamma=-2.0+-0.3stat+-0.2sys., 4 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal Letters. Abstract

The paper describes an application of the tree classification method Random Forest (RF), as used in the analysis of data from the ground-based gamma telescope MAGIC. In such telescopes, cosmic gamma-rays are observed and have to be discriminated against a dominating background of hadronic cosmic-ray particles. We describe the application of RF for this gamma/hadron separation. The RF method often shows superior performance in comparison with traditional semi-empirical techniques. Critical issues of the method and its implementation are discussed. An application of the RF method for estimation of a continuous parameter from related variables, rather than discrete classes, is also discussed., Comment: 16 pages, 8 figures

Abstract

We searched for very high energy (VHE) gamma-ray emission from the supernova remnant Cassiopeia A. The shell-type supernova remnant Cassiopeia A was observed with the 17 meter MAGIC telescope between July 2006 and January 2007 for a total time of 47 hours. The source was detected above an energy of 250 GeV with a significance of 5.2sigma and a photon flux above 1 TeV of (7.3+-0.7_stat+-2.2_sys)10^-13 cm^-2s^-1. The photon spectrum is compatible with a power law dN/dE = A E^-Gamma with a photon index Gamma=2.3+-0.2_stat+-0.2_sys. Abstract

We report the detection of a new source of very high energy (VHE; E-gamma >= 100 GeV) gamma- ray emission located close to the Galactic plane, MAGIC J0616 + 225, which is spatially coincident with supernova remnant IC 443. The observations were carried out with the MAGIC telescope in the periods 2005 December-2006 January and 2006 December-2007 January. Here we present results from this source, leading to a VHE gamma-ray signal with a statistical significance of 5.7 sigma in the 2006/2007 data and a measured differential gamma-ray flux consistent with a power law, described as dN(gamma)/(dA dt dE) = (1.0 +/- 0.2) x 10(-11) (E/0.4 TeV)(-3.1 +/- 0.3) cm(-2) s(-1) TeV-1. We briefly discuss the observational technique used and the procedure implemented for the data analysis. The results are placed in the context of the multiwavelength emission and the molecular environment found in the region of IC 443.

Abstract

In 2005 and 2006, the MAGIC telescope observed very high energy gamma-ray emission from the distant BL Lac object PG 1553 + 113. The overall significance of the signal was 8.8 sigma for 18.8 hr of observation time. The light curve shows no significant flux variations on a daily timescale; the flux level during 2005 was, however, significantly higher compared to 2006. The differential energy spectrum between similar to 90 and 500 GeV is well described by a power law with photon index. Gamma = 4.2 +/- 0.3. The combined 2005 and 2006 energy spectrum provides an upper limit of z = 0.74 on the redshift of the object.

Abstract

We report on the discovery of Very High Energy (VHE) gamma-ray emission from the BL Lacertae object 1ES1011+496. The observation was triggered by an optical outburst in March 2007 and the source was observed with the MAGIC telescope from March to May 2007. Observing for 18.7 hr we find an excess of 6.2 sigma with an integrated flux above 200 GeV of (1.58$\pm0.32) 10^{-11}$ photons cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$. The VHE gamma-ray flux is >40% higher than in March-April 2006 (reported elsewhere), indicating that the VHE emission state may be related to the optical emission state. We have also determined the redshift of 1ES1011+496 based on an optical spectrum that reveals the absorption lines of the host galaxy. The redshift of z=0.212 makes 1ES1011+496 the most distant source observed to emit VHE gamma-rays up to date., 4 pages, 6 figures, minor changes to fit the ApJ version

Abstract

Microquasars are binary star systems with relativistic radio-emitting jets. They are potential sources of cosmic rays and can be used to elucidate the physics of relativistic jets. We report the detection of variable gamma-ray emission above 100 gigaelectron volts from the microquasar LS I 61 + 303. Six orbital cycles were recorded. Several detections occur at a similar orbital phase, which suggests that the emission is periodic. Abstract

The MAGIC collaboration has studied the high-frequency-peaked BL Lac object 1ES 1218 + 30.4, at a redshift z = 0.182, using the MAGIC imaging air Cerenkov telescope located on the Canary Island of La Palma. A gamma-ray signal was observed with 6.4 sigma significance. The differential energy spectrum for an energy threshold of 120 GeV can be fitted by a simple power law, yielding F-E = (8.1 +/- 2.1) x 10(-7)[E/(250 GeV)](-3.0 +/- 0.4) TeV-1 F (E) m(-2) s(-1). During the 6 days of observation in 2005 January, no time variability on timescales of days was found within the statistical errors. The observed integral flux above 350 GeV is nearly a factor of 2 below the upper limit reported by the Whipple collaboration in 2003.

Abstract

The long-duration GRB050713a was observed by the MAGIC Telescope, 40 seconds after the burst onset, and followed up for 37 minutes, until twilight. The observation, triggered by a SWIFT alert, covered energies above ~175 GeV. Using standard MAGIC analysis, no evidence for a gamma signal was found. As the redshift of the GRB was not measured directly, the flux upper limit, estimated by MAGIC, is still compatible with the assumption of an unbroken power-law spectrum extending from a few hundred keV to our energy range., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures, submitted to ApJ

Abstract

Recently, the HESS collaboration has reported the detection of gamma-ray emission above a few hundred GeV from eight new sources located close to the Galactic Plane. The source HESS J1813-178 has sparked particular interest, as subsequent radio observations imply an association with SNR G12.82-0.02. Triggered by the detection in VHE gamma-rays, a positionally coincident source has also been found in INTEGRAL and ASCA data. In this Letter we present MAGIC observations of HESS J1813-178, resulting in the detection of a differential gamma-ray flux consistent with a hard-slope power law, described as dN/(dA dt dE) = (3.3+/-0.5)*10^{-12} (E/TeV)^{-2.1+/-0.2} cm^(-2)s^(-1)TeV^(-1). We briefly discuss the observational technique used, the procedure implemented for the data analysis, and put this detection in the perspective of multifrequency observations., Accepted by ApJ Letters

Abstract

The unidentified TeV source in Cygnus is now confirmed by follow-up observations from 2002 with the HEGRA stereoscopic system of Cherenkov Telescopes. Using all data (1999 to 2002) we confirm this new source as steady in flux over the four years of data taking, extended with radius 6.2 arcmin (+-1.2 arcmin (stat) +-0.9 arcmin (sys)) and exhibiting a hard spectrum with photon index -1.9. It is located in the direction of the dense OB stellar association, Cygnus OB2. Its integral flux above energies E>1 TeV amounts to \~5% of the Crab assuming a Gaussian profile for the intrinsic source morphology. There is no obvious counterpart at radio, optical nor X-ray energies, leaving TeVJ2032+4130 presently unidentified. Observational parameters of this source are updated here and some astrophysical discussion is provided. Also included are upper limits for a number of other interesting sources in the FoV, including the famous microquasar Cygnus X-3., 7 pages, 3 figures. Abstract

The poor angular resolution of imaging gamma-ray telescopes is offset by the large reflector areas of next generation telescopes such as MAGIC (17~m diameter), which makes the study of optical emission associated with some gamma-ray sources feasible. Furthermore, the extremely fast time response of photomultipliers (PMs) makes them ideal detectors for fast (subsecond) optical transients and periodic sources like pulsars. The optical pulse of the Crab pulsar was detected with the HEGRA CT1 central pixel using a modified PM, similar to the future MAGIC camera PMs. The purpose of these periodic observations was to determine the light of the night sky (LONS) for the galactic anticenter Crab region.Our results are between 2.5 and 3 times larger than the previously measured LONS (outside the galactic plane), as expected since the Crab pulsar is in the galactic plane, which implies a slightly higher energy threshold for Crab observations, if the higher value of CT1 measured LONS rate for galactic sources is used., 19 pages, 6 figures, accepted by Astroparticle Physics

Abstract

Major Atmospheric Gamma Imaging Cherenkov telescope is starting its operations with a set of engineering runs to tune the telescope subsystem elements to be ready for the first physics campaign. Many technical improvements have been developed and implemented in several elements of the telescope to reach the lowest energy threshold ever obtained by an Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescope. A general description of the telescope is presented. The commissioning of the telescope's elements is described and the expected performances are reviewed with the final detector set-up.

Abstract

Microquasars are binary star systems with relativistic radio-emitting jets. They are potential sources of cosmic rays and can be used to elucidate the physics of relativistic jets. We report the detection of variable gamma-ray emission above 100 gigaelectron volts from the microquasar LS I 61 + 303. Six orbital cycles were recorded. Several detections occur at a similar orbital phase, which suggests that the emission is periodic. The strongest gamma-ray emission is not observed when the two stars are closest to one another, implying a strong orbital modulation of the emission or absorption processes.
