Search

In the past few years, we built a Hubble diagram of quasars up to redshift z$\sim$7, based on the nonlinear relation between quasars' x-ray and UV luminosities. Such a Hubble diagram shows a >4$\sigma$ deviation from the standard flat $\Lambda$CDM model at z>1.5. Given the important consequences of this result, it is fundamental to rule out any systematic effect in the selection of the sample and/or in the flux measurements, and to investigate possible redshift dependences of the relation, that would invalidate the use of quasars as standard candles. Here we review all the observational results supporting our method: the match of the Hubble diagram of quasars with that of supernovae in the common redshift range, the constant slope of the relation at all redshifts, the redshift non-evolution of the spectral properties of our sources both in the x-rays and in the UV. An independent test of our results requires the observation of other standard candles at high redshift. In particular, we expect that future observations of supernovas at z>2 will confirm the deviation from the concordance model found with the Hubble diagram of quasars.

SMSS\,J114447.77-430859.3 ($z=0.83$) has been identified in the SkyMapper Southern Survey as the most luminous quasar in the last $\sim 9\,\rm Gyr$. In this paper, we report on the eROSITA/Spectrum-Roentgen-Gamma (SRG) observations of the source from the eROSITA All Sky Survey, along with presenting results from recent monitoring performed using Swift, XMM-Newton, and NuSTAR. The source shows a clear variability by factors of $\sim 10$ and $\sim 2.7$ over timescales of a year and of a few days, respectively. When fit with an absorbed power law plus high-energy cutoff, the X-ray spectra reveal a $\Gamma=2.2 \pm 0.2$ and $E_{\rm cut}=23^{+26}_{-5}\,\rm keV$. Assuming Comptonisation, we estimate a coronal optical depth and electron temperature of $\tau=2.5-5.3\, (5.2-8)$ and $kT=8-18\, (7.5-14)\,\rm keV$, respectively, for a slab (spherical) geometry. The broadband SED is successfully modelled by assuming either a standard accretion disc illuminated by a central X-ray source, or a thin disc with a slim disc emissivity profile. The former model results in a black hole mass estimate of the order of $10^{10}\,M_\odot$, slightly higher than prior optical estimates; meanwhile, the latter model suggests a lower mass. Both models suggest sub-Eddington accretion when assuming a spinning black hole, and a compact ($\sim 10\,r_{\rm g}$) X-ray corona. The measured intrinsic column density and the Eddington ratio strongly suggest the presence of an outflow driven by radiation pressure. We present a new X-Ray Accretion Disk-wind Emulator (\textsc{xrade}) based on the 2.5D Monte Carlo radiative transfer code which provides a physically-motivated, self-consistent treatment of both absorption and emission from a disk-wind by computing the local ionization state and velocity field within the flow. \textsc{xrade} is then implemented through a process that combines X-ray tracing with supervised machine learning. We develop a novel emulation method consisting in training, validating, and testing the simulated disk-wind spectra into a purposely built artificial neural network. The trained emulator can generate a single synthetic spectrum for a particular parameter set in a fraction of a second, in contrast to the few hours required by a standard Monte Carlo radiative transfer pipeline. The emulator does not suffer from interpolation issues with multi-dimensional spaces that are typically faced by traditional X-ray fitting packages such as \textsc{xspec}. \textsc{xrade} will be suitable to a wide number of sources across the black-hole mass, ionizing luminosity, and accretion rate scales. As an example, we demonstrate the applicability of \textsc{xrade} to the physical interpretation of the X-ray spectra of the bright quasar PDS 456, which hosts the best-established accretion-disk wind observed to date. We anticipate that our emulation method will be an indispensable tool for the development of high-resolution theoretical models, with the necessary flexibility to be optimized for the next generation micro-calorimeters on board future missions, like \textit{XRISM/resolve} and \textit{Athena/X-IFU}. The existence of multiple active galactic nuclei (AGN) at small projected distances on the sky is due to either the presence of multiple, in-spiraling SMBHs, or to gravitational lensing of a single AGN. Both phenomena allow us to address important astrophysical and cosmological questions. However, few kpc-separation multiple AGN are currently known. Recently, the newly-developed Gaia Multi peak (GMP) method provided numerous new candidate members of these populations. We present spatially resolved, integral-field spectroscopy of a sample of four GMP-selected multiple AGNs candidates. In all of these systems, we detect two or more components with sub-arcsec separations. We find that two of the systems are dual AGNs, one is either an intrinsic triple or a lensed dual AGN, while the last system is a chance AGN/star alignment. Our observations double the number of confirmed multiple AGNs at projected separations below 7 kpc at z > 0.5, present the first detection of a possible triple AGN in a single galaxy at z > 0.5, and successfully test the GMP method as a novel technique to discover previously unknown multiple AGNs., 6 pages, 2 figures

We present a new X-ray spectroscopic study of $22$ luminous ($2\times10^{45}\lesssim L_{\rm bol}\rm /erg\,s^{-1} \lesssim 2\times10^{46}$) active galactic nuclei (AGNs) at intermediate-redshift ($0.1 \lesssim z \lesssim 0.4$), as part of the SUpermassive Black hole Winds in the x-rAYS (SUBWAYS) sample, mostly composed of quasars (QSOs) and type\,1 AGN. Here, 17 targets were observed with \textit{XMM-Newton} between 2019--2020 and the remaining 5 are from previous observations. The aim of this large campaign ($1.45\,\rm Ms$ duration) is to characterise the various manifestations of winds in the X-rays driven from supermassive black holes in AGN. In this paper we focus on the search and characterization of ultra-fast outflows (UFOs), which are typically detected through blueshifted absorption troughs in the Fe\,K band ($E>7\,\rm keV$). By following Monte Carlo procedures, we confirm the detection of absorption lines corresponding to highly ionised iron (e.g., Fe\,\textsc{xxv}\,H$\alpha$, Fe\,\textsc{xxvi}\,Ly$\alpha$) in 7/22 sources at the $\gtrsim95\%$ confidence level (for each individual line). The global combined probability of such absorption features in the sample is $>99.9\%$. The SUBWAYS campaign extends at higher luminosity and redshifts than previous local studies on Seyferts, obtained using \xmm and \suzaku observations. We find a UFO detection fraction of $\sim30\%$ on the total sample that is in agreement with the previous findings. This work independently provides further support for the existence of highly-ionised matter propagating at mildly relativistic speed ($\gtrsim0.1c$) in a considerable fraction of AGN over a broad range of luminosities, which is expected to play a key role in the self-regulated AGN feeding-feedback cycle, as also supported by hydrodynamical multiphase simulations., Comment: 30 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

We present a UV spectroscopic study of ionized outflows in 21 active galactic nuclei (AGN), observed with the HST. The targets of the SUBWAYS sample were selected with the aim to probe the parameter space of the underexplored AGN between the local Seyfert galaxies and the luminous quasars at high redshifts. Our targets, spanning redshifts of 0.1-0.4 and bolometric luminosities (L_bol) of 10^45-10^46 erg/s, have been observed with a large multi-wavelength campaign. Here, we model the UV spectra and look for different types of AGN outflows. We find that 60% of our targets show a presence of outflowing H I absorption, while 40% exhibit ionized outflows seen as absorption by either C IV, N V, or O VI. This is comparable to the occurrence of ionized outflows seen in the local Seyfert galaxies. All UV absorption lines in the sample are relatively narrow, with outflow velocities reaching up to -3300 km/s. We did not detect any UV counterparts to the X-ray ultra-fast outflows (UFOs), most likely due to their being too highly ionized. However, all SUBWAYS targets with an X-ray UFO demonstrate the presence of UV outflows at lower velocities. We find significant correlations between the column density (N) of the UV ions and L_bol of the AGN, with N of H I decreasing with L_bol, while N of O VI is increasing with L_bol. This is likely to be a photoionization effect, where toward higher AGN luminosities, the wind becomes more ionized, resulting in less absorption by neutral or low-ionization ions and more absorption by high-ionization ions. In addition, we find that N of the UV ions decreases as their outflow velocity increases. This may be explained by a mechanical power that is evacuating the UV-absorbing medium. We analyse the properties of the CIV broad emission line in connection with the X-ray emission of 30 bright SDSS quasars at z~3.0-3.3 with pointed XMM-Newton observations, which were selected to test the suitability of AGN as cosmological tools. In our previous work, we found that a large fraction (~25%) of the quasars in this sample are X-ray underluminous by factors of >3-10. As absorbing columns of >10$^{23}$ cm$^{-2}$ can be safely ruled out, their weakness is most likely intrinsic. Here we explore possible correlations between the UV and X-ray features of these sources to investigate the origin of X-ray weakness. We fit their UV SDSS spectra and analyse their CIV properties (e.g., equivalent width, EW; line peak velocity, $\upsilon_{\rm peak}$) as a function of the X-ray photon index and 2-10 keV flux. We confirm the trends of CIV $\upsilon_{\rm peak}$ and EW with UV luminosity at 2500 angstrom for both X-ray weak and X-ray normal quasars, as well as the correlation between X-ray weakness and CIV EW. In contrast to some recent work, we do not observe any clear relation between the 2-10 keV luminosity and $\upsilon_{\rm peak}$. We find a correlation between the hard X-ray flux and the integrated CIV flux for X-ray normal quasars, whilst X-ray weak quasars deviate from the main trend by more than 0.5 dex. We argue that X-ray weakness might be interpreted in a starved X-ray corona picture associated with an ongoing disc-wind phase. If the wind is ejected in the vicinity of the black hole, the extreme-UV radiation that reaches the corona will be depleted, depriving the corona of seeds photons and generating an X-ray weak quasar. Yet, at the largest UV luminosities (>10$^{47}$ erg s$^{-1}$), there will still be an ample reservoir of ionising photons that can explain the excess CIV emission observed in the X-ray weak quasars with respect to normal sources of similar X-ray luminosities., Comment: 22 pages, 15 figures (with 3 more figures in the Appendix), abstract abridged. The classification of the optical spectra of active galactic nuclei (AGN) into different types is well founded on AGN physics, but it involves some degree of human oversight and cannot be reliably scaled to large data sets. Machine learning (ML) tackles such a classification problem in a fast and reproducible way, but is often perceived as a black box. However, ML interpretability and explainability are active research areas in computer science, increasingly providing us with tools to alleviate this issue. We applied ML interpretability tools to a classifier trained to predict AGN type from spectra, to demonstrate the use of such tools in this context. We trained a support-vector machine on 3346 high-quality, low redshift AGN spectra from SDSS DR15 with an existing reliable classification as type 1, type 2, or intermediate type. On a selection of test-set spectra, we computed the gradient of the predicted class probability and we built saliency maps. We also visualized the high-dimensional space of AGN spectra using t-distributed stochastic neighbor embedding (t-SNE), showing where the spectra for which we computed a saliency map are located. Regions that affect the predicted AGN type often coincide with physically relevant features, such as spectral lines. t-SNE visualization shows good separability of type 1 and type 2 spectra, while intermediate-type spectra either lie in-between as expected or appear mixed with type 2 spectra. Saliency maps show why a given AGN type was predicted by our classifier, resulting in a physical interpretation in terms of regions of the spectrum that affected its decision, making it no longer a black box. These regions coincide with those used by human experts such as relevant spectral lines, and are even used in a similar way, with the classifier e.g. effectively measuring the width of a line by weighing its center and its tails oppositely., Comment: Under review by A&A

New Swift monitoring observations of the variable, radio-quiet quasar, PDS 456, are presented. A bright X-ray flare was captured in September 2018, the flux increasing by a factor of 4 and with a doubling time-scale of 2 days. From the light crossing argument, the coronal size is inferred to be about 30 gravitational radii for a black hole mass of $10^{9} {\rm M}_{\odot}$ and the total flare energy exceeds $10^{51}$ erg. A hardening of the X-ray emission accompanied the flare, with the photon index decreasing from $\Gamma=2.2$ to $\Gamma=1.7$ and back again. The flare is produced in the X-ray corona, the lack of any optical or UV variability being consistent with a constant accretion rate. Simultaneous XMM-Newton and NuSTAR observations were performed, $1-3$ days after the flare peak and during the decline phase. These caught PDS 456 in a bright, bare state, where no disc wind absorption features are apparent. The hard X-ray spectrum shows a high energy roll-over, with an e-folding energy of $E_{\rm fold}=51^{+11}_{-8}$ keV. The deduced coronal temperature, of $kT=13$ keV, is one of the coolest measured in any AGN and PDS 456 lies well below the predicted pair annihilation line in X-ray corona. The spectral variability, becoming softer when fainter following the flare, is consistent with models of cooling X-ray coronae. The properties of large-scale galactic outflows, such as their kinetic energy and momentum rates, correlate with the luminosity of the active galactic nucleus (AGN). This is well explained by the wind-driven outflow model, where a fraction of the AGN luminosity drives the outflow. However, significant departures from these correlations have been observed in a number of galaxies. This may happen because AGN luminosity varies on a much shorter timescale ($\sim 10^4-10^5$~yr) than outflow properties do ($\sim 10^6$~yr). We investigate the effect of AGN luminosity variations on outflow properties using 1D numerical simulations. This effect can explain the very weak outflow in PDS 456: if its nucleus is currently much brighter than the long-term average luminosity, the outflow has not had time to react to this luminosity change. Conversely, the outflow in Mrk 231 is consistent with being driven by an almost continuous AGN, while IRAS F11119+3257 represents an intermediate case between the two. Considering a population of AGN, we find that very low momentum loading factors $\dot{p}_{\rm out} < L_{\rm AGN}/c$ should be seen in a significant fraction of objects - up to $15\%$ depending on the properties of AGN variability and galaxy gas fraction. The predicted distribution of loading factors is consistent with the available observational data. We discuss how this model might help constrain the duty cycles of AGN during the period of outflow inflation, implications for multiphase and spatially distinct outflows, and suggest ways of improving AGN prescriptions in numerical simulations., 15 pages, 7 figures; accepted for publication in MNRAS

When a black hole accretes close to the Eddington limit, the astrophysical jet is often accompanied by radiatively driven, wide-aperture and mildly relativistic winds. Powerful winds can produce significant non-thermal radio emission via shocks. Among the nearby critical accretion quasars, PDS 456 has a very massive black hole (about one billion solar masses), shows a significant star-forming activity (about seventy solar masses per year) and hosts exceptionally energetic X-ray winds (power up to twenty per cent of the Eddington luminosity). To probe the radio activity in this extreme accretion and feedback system, we performed very-long-baseline interferometric (VLBI) observations of PDS 456 at 1.66 GHz with the European VLBI Network (EVN) and the enhanced Multi-Element Remotely Linked Interferometry Network (e-MERLIN). We find a rarely-seen complex radio-emitting nucleus consisting of a collimated jet and an extended non-thermal radio emission region. The diffuse emission region has a size of about 360 pc and a radio luminosity about three times higher than the nearby extreme starburst galaxy Arp 220. The powerful nuclear radio activity could result from either a relic jet with a peculiar geometry (nearly along the line of sight) or more likely from diffuse shocks formed naturally by the existing high-speed winds impacting on high-density star-forming regions., 8 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present $NuSTAR$ observations of four active galactic nuclei (AGN) located within 15 Mpc. These AGN, namely ESO 121-G6, NGC 660, NGC 3486 and NGC 5195, have observed X-ray luminosities of $L_{\rm 2-10\ keV, obs} \lesssim$ 10$^{39}$ erg s$^{-1}$, classifying them as low luminosity AGN (LLAGN). We perform broadband X-ray spectral analysis for the AGN by combining our $NuSTAR$ data with $Chandra$ or $XMM-Newton$ observations to directly measure their column densities ($N_{\rm H}$) and infer their intrinsic power. We complement our X-ray data with archival and new high angular resolution mid-infrared (mid-IR) data for all objects, except NGC 5195. Based on our X-ray spectral analysis, we found that both ESO 121-G6 and NGC 660 are heavily obscured ($N_{\rm H}$ > 10$^{23}$ cm$^{-2}$; $L_{\rm 2-10\ keV,\ int} \sim$ 10$^{41}$ erg s$^{-1}$), and NGC 660 may be Compton-thick. We also note that the X-ray flux and spectral slope for ESO 121-G6 have significantly changed over the last decade, indicating significant changes in the obscuration and potentially accretion rate. On the other hand, NGC 3486 and NGC 5195 appear to be unobscured and just mildly obscured, respectively, with $L_{\rm 2-10\ keV,\ int} $ 10$^{41}$ erg s$^{-1}$ and $\lambda_{\rm Edd} \gtrsim$ 10$^{-3}$, and are detected in high angular resolution mid-IR imaging, indicating the presence of obscuring dust on nuclear scale. NGC 3486 however, is undetected in high-resolution mid-IR imaging, and the current data do not provide stringent constraints on the presence or absence of obscuring nuclear dust in the AGN., Comment: 18 pages, 11 figures, 3 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We report on one of the brightest flux levels of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 2992 ever observed in X-rays, on May 2019. The source has been monitored every few days from March 26, 2019 to December 14, 2019 by Swift-XRT, and simultaneous XMM-Newton (250 ks) and NuSTAR (120 ks) observations were triggered on May 6, 2019. The high count rate of the source (its 2-10 keV flux ranged between 0.7 and $1.0\times10^{-10}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$) allows us to perform a time-resolved spectroscopy, probing spatial scales of tens of gravitational radii from the central black hole. By constructing a map of the excess emission over the primary continuum, we find several emission structures in the 5.0-7.2 keV energy band. From fitting the 50 EPIC pn spectral slices of $\sim$5 ks duration, we interpret them as a constant narrow iron K$\alpha$ line and three variable components in the iron K complex. When a self-consistent model accounting for the accretion disk emission is considered (KYNrline), two of these features (in the 5.0-5.8 keV and 6.8-7.2 keV bands) can be ascribed to a flaring region of the accretion disk located at ${r_{in}}\simeq15$-40 r$_{g\rm }$ from the black hole. The third one (6.5-6.8 keV) is likely produced at much larger radii ($r_{in}>50$ r$_{g\rm }$). The inner radius and the azimuthal extension retrieved from the coadded spectra of the flaring states are ${ r_{in}}=15\pm3$ r$_{g\rm }$ and $\phi=165^{\circ}-330^{\circ}$, suggesting that the emitting region responsible for the broad iron K component is a relatively compact annular sector within the disk. Our findings support a physical scenario in which the accretion disk in NGC 2992 becomes more active at high accretion rates ($L_{\rm bol}/L_{\rm Edd}\geq4\%$)., Comment: 12 pages, 12 figures, 1 table. We present joint \textit{XMM-Newton} and \textit{NuSTAR} observations of the `bare' narrow line Seyfert 1 Ton S180 ($z=0.062$), carried out in 2016 and providing the first hard X-ray view of this luminous galaxy. We find that the 0.4--30 keV band cannot be self-consistently reproduced by relativistic reflection models, which fail to account simultaneously for the soft and hard X-ray emission. The smooth soft excess prefers extreme blurring parameters, confirmed by the nearly featureless nature of the RGS spectrum, while the moderately broad Fe K line and the modest hard excess above 10 keV appear to arise in a milder gravity regime. By allowing a different origin of the soft excess, the broadband X-ray spectrum and overall spectral energy distribution (SED) are well explained by a combination of: (a) direct thermal emission from the accretion disc, dominating from the optical to the far/extreme UV; (b) Comptonization of seed disc photons by a warm ($kT_{\rm e}\sim0.3$ keV) and optically thick ($\tau\sim10$) corona, mostly contributing to the soft X-rays; (c) Comptonization by a standard hot ($kT_{\rm e} \gtrsim 100$ keV) and optically thin ($\tau, Comment: 20 pages, 12 figures. Past X-ray observations of the nearby luminous quasar PDS 456 (at $z=0.184$) have revealed a wide angle accretion disk wind (Nardini et al. 2015), with an outflow velocity of $\sim-0.25c$, as observed through observations of its blue-shifted iron K-shell absorption line profile. Here we present three new XMM-Newton observations of PDS 456; one in September 2018 where the quasar was bright and featureless, and two in September 2019, 22 days apart, occurring when the quasar was five times fainter and where strong blue-shifted lines from the wind were present. During the second September 2019 observation, three broad ($\sigma=3000$ km s$^{-1}$) absorption lines were resolved in the high resolution RGS spectrum, which are identified with blue-shifted OVIII Ly$\alpha$, NeIX He$\alpha$ and NeX Ly$\alpha$. The outflow velocity of this soft X-ray absorber was found to be $v/c=-0.258\pm0.003$, fully consistent with iron K absorber with $v/c=-0.261\pm0.007$. The ionization parameter and column density of the soft X-ray component ($\log\xi=3.4$, $N_{\rm H}=2\times10^{21}$ cm$^{-2}$) outflow was lower by about two orders of magnitude, when compared to the high ionization wind at iron K ($\log\xi=5$, $N_{\rm H}=7\times10^{23}$ cm$^{-2}$). Substantial variability was seen in the soft X-ray absorber between the 2019 observations, declining from $N_{\rm H}=10^{23}$ cm$^{-2}$ to $N_{\rm H}=10^{21}$ cm$^{-2}$ over 20 days, while the iron K component was remarkably stable. We conclude that the soft X-ray wind may originate from an inhomogeneous wind streamline passing across the line of sight and which due to its lower ionization, is located further from the black hole, on parsec scales, than the innermost disk wind., Comment: 13 pages, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

We report on the results of a multiwavelength monitoring campaign of the bright, nearby Seyfert galaxy, Ark 120 using a ~50-day observing programme with Swift and a ~4-month co-ordinated ground-based observing campaign, predominantly using the Skynet Robotic Telescope Network. We find Ark 120 to be variable at all optical, UV, and X-ray wavelengths, with the variability observed to be well-correlated between wavelength bands on short timescales. We perform cross-correlation analysis across all available wavelength bands, detecting time delays between emission in the X-ray band and the Swift V, B and UVW1 bands. In each case, we find that the longer-wavelength emission is delayed with respect to the shorter-wavelength emission. Within our measurement uncertainties, the time delays are consistent with the \tau ~ \lambda^{4/3} relation, as predicted by a disc reprocessing scenario. The measured lag centroids are \tau_{cent} = 11.90 +/- 7.33, 10.80 +/- 4.08, and 10.60 +/- 2.87 days between the X-ray and V, B, and UVW1 bands, respectively. These time delays are longer than those expected from standard accretion theory and, as such, Ark 120 may be another example of an active galaxy whose accretion disc appears to exist on a larger scale than predicted by the standard thin-disc model. Additionally, we detect further inter-band time delays: most notably between the ground-based I and B bands (\tau_{cent} = 3.46 +/- 0.86 days), and between both the Swift XRT and UVW1 bands and the I band (\tau_{cent} = 12.34 +/- 4.83 and 2.69 +/- 2.05 days, respectively), highlighting the importance of co-ordinated ground-based optical observations., Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures, 4 tables; accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present a newly discovered correlation between the wind outflow velocity and the X-ray luminosity in the luminous ($L_{\rm bol}\sim10^{47}\,\rm erg\,s^{-1}$) nearby ($z=0.184$) quasar PDS\,456. All the contemporary XMM-Newton, NuSTAR and Suzaku observations from 2001--2014 were revisited and we find that the centroid energy of the blueshifted Fe\,K absorption profile increases with luminosity. This translates into a correlation between the wind outflow velocity and the hard X-ray luminosity (between 7--30\,keV) where we find that $v_{\rm w}/c \propto L_{7-30}^{\gamma}$ where $\gamma=0.22\pm0.04$. We also show that this is consistent with a wind that is predominately radiatively driven, possibly resulting from the high Eddington ratio of PDS\,456., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures. The spin of supermassive black holes (SMBH) in active galactic nuclei (AGN) can be determined from spectral signature(s) of relativistic reflection such as the X-ray iron Kα line profile, but this can be rather uncertain when the line of sight intersects the so-called warm absorber and/or other wind components as these distort the continuum shape. Therefore, AGN showing no (or very weak) intrinsic absorption along the line-of-sight such as Ark 120, a so-called bare AGN, are the ideal targets for SMBH spin measurements. However, in our previous work on Ark 120, we found that its 2014 X-ray spectrum is dominated by Comptonisation, while the relativistic reflection emission only originates at tens of gravitational radii from the SMBH. As a result, we could not constrain the SMBH spin from disc reflection alone. Aims. Our aim is to determine the SMBH spin in Ark 120 from an alternative technique based on the global energetics of the disc-corona system. Indeed, the mass accretion rate (Ṁ) through the outer disc can be measured from the optical-UV emission, while the bolometric luminosity (Lbol) can be fairly well constrained from the optical to hard X-rays spectral energy distribution, giving access to the accretion efficiency η = Lbol/(Ṁc2) which depends on the SMBH spin. Methods. The spectral analysis uses simultaneous XMM-Newton (OM and pn) and NuSTAR observations on 2014 March 22 and 2013 February 18. We applied the OPTXCONV model (based on OPTXAGNF) to self consistently reproduce the emission from the inner corona (warm and hot thermal Comptonisation) and the outer disc (colour temperature corrected black body), taking into account both the disc inclination angle and relativistic effects. For self-consistency, we modelled the mild relativistic reflection of the incident Comptonisation components using the XILCONV convolution model. Results. We infer a SMBH spin of 0.83+0.05−0.03, adopting the SMBH reverberation mass of 1.50 × 108 M⊙. In addition, we find that the coronal radius decreases with increasing flux (by about a factor of two), from 85+13−10Rg in 2013 to 14 ± 3 Rg in 2014. Conclusions. This is the first time that such a constraint is obtained for a SMBH spin from this technique, thanks to the bare properties of Ark 120, its well determined SMBH reverberation mass, and the presence of a mild relativistic reflection component in 2014 which allows us to constrain the disc inclination angle. We caution that these results depend on the detailed disc-corona structure, which is not yet fully established. Outflows driven by active galactic nuclei (AGN) are expected to have a significant impact on the host galaxy evolution, but it is still debated how they are accelerated and propagate on galaxy-wide scales. This work addresses these questions by studying the link between X-ray, nuclear ultra-fast outflows (UFOs) and extended ionised outflows, for the first time in two quasars close to the peak of AGN activity ($z\sim2$), where AGN feedback is expected to be more effective. As targets, we selected two multiple-lensed quasars at $z\sim1.5$, HS 0810+2554 and SDSS J1353+1138, known to host UFOs and observed with the near-IR integral field spectrometer SINFONI at the VLT. We performed a kinematical analysis of the [O III]$\lambda$5007 optical emission line, in order to trace the presence of ionised outflows. We detected spatially resolved ionised outflows in both galaxies, extended more than 8 kpc and moving up to $v>2000$ km/s. We derived mass outflow rates of $\sim$12 M$_{sun}$/yr and $\sim$2 M$_{sun}$/yr for HS 0810+2554 and SDSS J1353+1138. Comparing with the co-hosted UFO energetics, the ionised outflow energetics in HS 0810+2554 is broadly consistent with a momentum-driven regime of wind propagation, while in SDSS J1353+1138 it differs by a factor of $\sim$100 from theoretical predictions, requiring either a massive molecular outflow or a high variability of the AGN activity to account for such a discrepancy. By additionally considering our results with those from the small sample of well-studied objects (all local but one), with both UFO and extended (ionised/atomic/molecular) outflow detections, we found that in 10 out of 12 galaxies the large-scale outflow energetics is consistent with the theoretical predictions of either a momentum- or an energy-driven scenario. Long X-ray observations of bright active galactic nuclei (AGN) show that X-ray eclipses, with durations from a few hours to a few days, are rather common. This opens up a new window of opportunity in the search for signatures of relativistic effects in AGN: an obscuring cloud covers/uncovers different parts of the accretion disc at different times, allowing a direct check of the expected pattern of disc emission. In particular, the combination of gravitational redshift and relativistic Doppler boosting should imply strong differences between the receding and approaching parts of an inclined thin disc. At present, these effects may be already detectable with a ‘lucky’XMM–Newton or Suzaku observation of a complete eclipse by a Compton-thick cloud (a rare, but not impossible-to-see event). In the future, higher sensitivity observatories will be able to perform these tests easily on tens of AGN. This will provide a powerful and direct way to test extreme gravity, and to probe the structure of AGN in the close vicinity of the central black holes.

We present the X-ray analysis of the most luminous obscured active galactic nuclei (AGN) inside local ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs). Our sample consists of ten sources, harbouring AGN components with estimated luminosity in excess of ~10^12 L_sun and yet unidentified at optical wavelengths because of their large obscuration. According to the Chandra and XMM-Newton spectra, only in two cases out of ten clear AGN signatures are detected at 2-10 keV in the shape of reflected emission. The X-ray flux from the starburst (SB) components, instead, is always broadly consistent with the expectations based on their IR emission. The most convincing explanation for the missing AGN detections is therefore the Compton-thickness of the X-ray absorber. In general, the combination of our mid-IR and X-ray spectral analysis suggests that the environment surrounding the AGN component in ULIRGs is much richer in gas and dust than in ordinary active galaxies, and the degree of AGN absorption can be tentatively related to the SB intensity, indicating a strong interaction between the two processes and supporting the ULIRG/quasar evolutionary scheme.

Over the last few years several models have been proposed to interpret the widespread soft excess observed in the X-ray spectra of type 1 active galactic nuclei (AGN). In particular, reflection from the photoionized accretion disc blurred by relativistic effects has proven to be successful in reproducing both the spectral shape and the variability pattern of many sources. As a further test to this scenario we present the analysis of a recent ~100 ks long Suzaku observation of Arakelian 120, a prototypical 'bare' Seyfert 1 galaxy in which no complex absorption system is expected to mimic a soft excess or mask the intrinsic properties of this key component. We show that a reflection model allowing for both warm/blurred and cold/distant reprocessing provides a self-consistent and convincing interpretation of the broadband X-ray emission of Ark 120, also characterized by a structured iron feature and a high-energy hump. Although warm absorbers, winds/outflows and multiple Comptonizing regions may play significant roles in sources with more spectral complexity, this case study adds evidence to the presence of blurred disc reflection as a basic component of the X-ray spectra of type 1 AGN.

We present a 5-8 micron analysis of the Spitzer-IRS spectra of 71 ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) with redshift z < 0.15, devoted to the study of the role of active galactic nuclei (AGN) and starbursts (SB) as the power source of the extreme infrared emission. Around 5 micron an AGN is much brighter (by a factor 30) than a starburst of equal bolometric luminosity. This allows us to detect the presence of even faint accretion-driven cores inside ULIRGs: signatures of AGN activity are found in 70 per cent of our sample (50/71 sources). Through a simple analytical model we are also able to obtain a quantitative estimate of the AGN/SB contribution to the overall energy output of each source. Although the main fraction of ULIRG luminosity is confirmed to arise from star formation events, the AGN contribution is non-negligible (23 per cent) and is shown to increase with luminosity. The existence of a rather heterogeneous pattern in the composition and geometrical structure of the dust among ULIRGs is newly supported by the comparison between individual absorption features and continuum extinction., 56 pages, 13 figures, 4 tables. We apply a simple model, tested on local ULIRGs, to disentangle the active galactic nucleus (AGN) and starburst contributions in submillimiter and 24um-selected ULIRGs observed with the Spitzer-IRS spectrometer. We quantitatively estimate the average AGN contribution to the stacked 6-8um rest-frame spectra of these sources in different luminosity and redshift ranges, and, under the assumption of similar infrared-to-bolometric ratios as in local ULIRGs, the relative AGN/starburst contributions to the total infrared luminosity. Though the starburst component is always dominant in submillimeter-selected ULIRGs, we find a significant increase of the AGN contribution at redshift z>2.3 with respect to lower z objects. Finally, we quantitatively confirm that the mid-infrared emission of 24um-selected ULIRGs is dominated by the AGN component, but the starburst component contributes significantly to the bolometric luminosity.

We present an analysis of the 5-8 micron Spitzer-IRS spectra of a sample of 68 local Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies (ULIRGs). Our diagnostic technique allows a clear separation of the active galactic nucleus (AGN) and starburst (SB) components in the observed mid-IR emission, and a simple analytic model provides a quantitative estimate of the AGN/starburst contribution to the bolometric luminosity. We show that AGNs are ~30 times brighter at 6 micron than starbursts with the same bolometric luminosity, so that even faint AGNs can be detected. Star formation events are confirmed as the dominant power source for extreme infrared activity, since ~85% of ULIRG luminosity arises from the SB component. Nonetheless an AGN is present in the majority (46/68) of our sources.

The evolution of galaxies is connected to the growth of supermassive black holes in their centers. During the quasar phase, a huge luminosity is released as matter falls onto the black hole, and radiation-driven winds can transfer most of this energy back to the host galaxy. Over five different epochs, we detected the signatures of a nearly spherical stream of highly ionized gas in the broadband x-ray spectra of the luminous quasar PDS 456. This persistent wind is expelled at relativistic speeds from the inner accretion disk, and its wide aperture suggests an effective coupling with the ambient gas. The outflow's kinetic power larger than 10(46) ergs per second is enough to provide the feedback required by models of black hole and host galaxy coevolution.

We present a complete X-ray spectral analysis of the obscured AGN in NGC 4945, based on a Suzaku campaign spanning a period of seven months. NGC 4945 is the archetypal Compton-thick Seyfert 2 galaxy, with a reflection-dominated spectrum below 10 keV, and the intrinsic emission visible only at higher energies. Taking advantage of the unique Suzaku-HXD capabilities we detect for the first time absorption variations larger than 1024 cm−2 on time scales of a few weeks, suggesting that the obscuring material consists of gas clouds at parsec-scale distance. This result proves the fundamental importance of a time-resolved broadband X-ray study of AGNs.

The purpose of this study is to comparatively evaluate the performance of different wearable systems based on indirect breathing monitoring in terms of susceptibility to motion artifacts. These performances are compared with direct respiratory measurements using a spirometer, which is accurate, reliable, and less sensitive to movement artifacts, but cannot be integrated into truly wearable form. Experiments were carried out on four indirect methods implemented into wearable systems, inductive plethysmography, impedance plethysmography, piezoresistive pneumography, and piezoelectric pneumography, to ascertain the performance of each of them in terms of noise due to movement artifacts, as well as to study the effects of different movements or gestures during each test. A group of volunteers was asked to wear all of the breath monitoring systems simultaneously along with the face mask of the spirometer while carrying out four physical exercises in a gym under controlled conditions. Data are analyzed in the time and frequency domain to estimate the frequency respiration from each wearable system and compare it with those of the spirometer. Results confirmed that all the wearable systems are somehow affected by movement artifacts, but statistical investigation showed that for most of the physical exercises, three out of four, piezoelectric pneumography provided best performance in terms of robustness and reduced susceptibility to movement artifacts.

Dysregulation of c-myc by translocation to the switch regions of the IgH locus occurs in most murine plasmacytomas. Translocations involving 14q32 have been reported in 20-40% of abnormal karyotypes from human multiple myeloma (MM), and involve a variety of loci. Using cytogenetics, FISH and a Southern blot assay, we analyzed 21 MM cells lines and one plasma cell leukemia and identified evidence of a 14q32 translocation in 20/22 samples. The partner loci involved are 11q13 in 6 (associated with cyclin D1 expression), 4p16 in 6 (associated with FGFR3 expression), unidentified in 3 and 1p13, 6, 8q24, 12q24, 16q23, and 21q22 once each. We conclude that conventional karyotypes underestimate the frequency of 14q32 translocations in MM, where they appear to be a nearly universal event. The translocations most frequently involve IgH switch regions, and include two recurrent partner loci (11q13 and 4p16) and a promiscuous array of other partner loci. Although c-myc appears to be cis-dysregulated frequently in MM, it is only rarely translocated to the IgH locus.

A plastic drum-like anti-personal mine simulant (2 inch diam, by 1 inch tall, by ¼ inch thick aluminum tube, capped by a ¼ Al bottom circular plate and an elastic acrylic 1/16 inch thick circular top plate) was constructed. It was then modified to generate an electrical response to top-plate vibration. The mine simulant was converted to a transducer by fastened a sewing machine size bobbin wound with fine enamel copper wire onto the inside face on the bottom plate of the simulant. Next, a rare earth magnet was fastened to the inside surface of the elastic top plate (using a tacky wax). Leads were connected using insulated feed through connectors to complete the transducer design. In testing out the electro-dynamic transducer landmine simulant, results showed that the design was adequate to detect the vibration resonant response using a 2 inch burial depth in a concrete soil box filled with dry masonry sand. Two 12 inch diameter subwoofers were located a meter above the soil box and radiated sound levels on the order of 80-90 dB re 20 micro Pa, were measured near the soil surface. The swept sinusoidal transducer/microphone response exhibited a fundamental resonance near 190 Hz.
