Zika virus (ZIKV) is a recently re-emerged flavivirus transmitted primarily through the bite of an infected mosquito,Aedes aegyptibeing the main vector. ZIKV infection is associated with a range of adverse effects; infection during pregnancy can lead to foetal abnormalities, including microcephaly. Lacking a licensed vaccine, or specific therapeutics, control of ZIKV transmission focuses on vector control. However, in most transmission settings, current methods are insufficient to successfully control ZIKV, or other similarly-transmitted arboviruses such as dengue and chikungunya viruses. This has stimulated interest in genetics-based methods, either to reduce the number of mosquitoes (“population suppression”), or to make mosquitoes less able to transmit (“population modification”). Here, we describe a method to selectively eliminate infected mosquitoes, using a virus sensor inserted into the mosquito genome and coupled to a quorum-counting lethal effector. In mosquitoes, ZIKV normally establishes persistent, lifelong infection; survival of these infected mosquitoes is crucial to transmission potential. The evolution and molecular differentiation of heteromorphic sex chromosomes involves the accumulation of different repetitive DNA sequences due to restricted recombination. This also applies to moths and butterflies (Lepidoptera), which mostly have the WZ sex chromosome system. The female-specific W chromosome is typically rich in heterochromatin, harbours few or no genes and carries a large number of repetitive sequences. Molecular cytogenetic approaches such as comparative genomic hybridization (CGH) or fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) have shown that the W chromosome has evolved rapidly and varies widely among species. However, our knowledge of the composition of the W chromosome is still very limited. Here we present the analysis of repeats on the W chromosome in the willow beauty, Peribatodes rhomboidaria (Geometridae). RepeatExplorer comparative analysis of male and female genomes identified 10 putative W chromosome-enriched repeats, most of them being LTR or LINE mobile elements. We analysed two repeats with the largest difference between sexes: PRW LINE-like and PRW Bel-Pao. The results of FISH mapping and bioinformatic analysis confirm their W chromosome enrichment, thus supporting the hypothesis that mobile elements are the driving force of W chromosome differentiation in Lepidoptera.

Abstract In open pit stability analyses, numerical modeling helps to evaluate failure modes related to the interaction between discontinuities and the rock mass. In particular, numerical models that integrate discrete fracture networks (DFNs) are a relevant tool for detecting slope failure mechanisms, especially when failure involves slippage along geological structures. Traditionally, the focus of such analyses is stochastic in nature. However, a deterministic approach to open pit modeling can be adopted using DFN as a discontinuity integration logic with defined persistence based on field mapping. This article presents a stability analysis of a "deterministic" type approach which implements the DFN logic incorporated in discrete element software, which would allow for the representation of discontinuities of variable persistence. The methodology has been validated through its application in numerical open pit models aimed at calibrating instabilities and evaluating predictive design conditions, whose results have been satisfactory, and representative of the instability conditions observed in situ.

The ant

The red palm weevil, Rhynchophorus ferrugineus, is the most harmful species among those pests affecting palm trees. Its impact causes important economic losses around the World. Nevertheless, the genetic information of Rh. ferrugineus is very scarce. Last year, the first genome assembly was published including a rough description of its repeatome. However, no information has been added about one of the main components of repeated DNA, the satellite DNA. Herein, we presented the characterization of the satellitome of this important species that includes 112 satellite DNA families, the largest number in an insect genome. These satellite DNA families made up around 25% of the genome while the most abundant family, RferSat01-169, alone represented 20.4%. Chromosomal location of most abundant satellite DNA families performed by fluorescence in situ hybridization showed that all of them are dispersed in the euchromatin on all chromosomes but some of them are also specifically accumulated either on the pericentromeric heterochromatic regions of all chromosomes or on specific chromosomes. Finally, the transcription of satellitome families was analyzed through Rh. ferrugineus development. It was found that 55 out of 112 satellite DNA families showed transcription, some families seemed to be transcribed across all stages while a few appeared to be stage-specific, indicating a possible role of those satellite DNA sequences in the development of this species.

Understanding the evolution and regulation of nucleolar organizing regions (NORs) is important to elucidate genome structure and function. This is because ribosomal gene (rDNA) copy number and activity mediate protein biosynthesis, stress response, ageing, disease, dosage compensation and genome stability. Here, we found contrasting dosage compensation of sex-linked NORs in turtles with male and female heterogamety. Most taxa examined exhibit homomorphic rRNA gene clusters in a single autosome pair (determined by 28S rDNA fluorescence in situ hybridization), whereas NORs are sex-linked in Apalone spinifera, Pelodiscus sinensis and Staurotypus triporcatus. Full-dosage compensation upregulates the male X-NOR (determined via silver staining-AgNOR) in Staurotypus (who lacks Y-NOR) compared with female X-AgNORs. In softshell Apalone and Pelodiscus, who share homologous ZZ/ZW micro-chromosomes, their enlarged W-NOR is partially active (due to 28S rDNA invasion by R2 retroelements), whereas their smaller Z-NOR is silent in females but active in both male-Zs (presumably because the W-NOR meets cellular demands and excessive NOR activity is costly). We hypothesize that R2 disruption favoured W enlargement to add intact 28S-units, perhaps facilitated by reduced recombination during sex chromosome evolution. The molecular basis of the potentially adaptive female Z-silencing is likely intricate and perhaps epigenetic, as non-ribosomal Z genes are active in Apalone females. Yet, Emydura maquarii exhibit identical heteromorphism in their autosomal NOR (R2 invaded 28S-units and the small-autosome NOR is silent), suggesting that the softshell turtle pattern can evolve independent of sex chromosome evolution. Our study illuminates the complex sex chromosome evolution and dosage compensation of non-model systems that challenges classic paradigms.

Footwear comfort is one of the determinant factors in a buyout decision. The understanding of which brain patterns are involved in the comfort perception of footwear could be an important element to develop the consumer neuroscience field, and could even help during the development phase of new products. The present paper studies the comfort perception through the electroencephalography analysis of the brain signals of ten subjects during walking. For the analysis, different features were extracted from the subject’s biosignals based on power spectral density attributes and temporal and statistical parameters of the data under analysis. The research compared the features when the subjects were wearing a comfortable and a uncomfortable shoe by size on a treadmill. The results indicate that both kind of shoes could be classified with average accuracies of 84,3% and that an influence of parietal, tempo-parietal and in a minor way frontal lobes was detected. Despite the subject’s dependency on the results, the research demonstrates that a common electrode and feature configuration could be applied keeping the results in an average accuracy of 83,7% and that a reduction to a 12 electrode setup maintains the accuracy at a 78,0% value.

Aphids (Hemiptera, Aphididae) are small phytophagous insects. The aim of this study was to determine if the mariner elements found in the ant genomes are also present in Aphis fabae and Aphis hederae genomes and the possible existence of horizontal transfer events. Aphids maintain a relationship of mutualism with the ants. The close contact between these insects could favour horizontal transfer events of transposable elements. Myrmar mariner element isolated from Myrmica ruginodis and Tapinoma ibericum ants have also been found in the two Aphis species: A. fabae and A. hederae (Afabmar-Mr and Ahedmar-Mr elements). Besides, Afabmar-Mr could be an active transposon. Myrmar-like elements are also present in other insect species as well as in one Crustacean species. The phylogenetic study carried out with all Myrmar-like elements suggests the existence of horizontal transfer. Most aphids have 2n = 8 with a XX-X0 sex determination system. Their complicated life cycle is mostly parthenogenetic with sexual individuals only in autumn. The production of X0 males, originated by XX females which produce only spermatozoa with one X chromosome, must necessarily occur through specialized cytogenetic and molecular mechanisms which are not entirely known. In both aphid species, the mariner elements are located on all chromosomes, including the X chromosomes. However, on the two X chromosomes, no positive signals are detected in their small DAPI-negative telomere regions. The rDNA sites are located, as in the majority of Aphids species, on one of the telomere regions of each X chromosome. The hybridization patterns obtained by double FISH demonstrate that Afabmar-Mr and Ahedmar-Mr elements do not hybridize at the rDNA sites of their host species. Possible causes for the absence of these transposons in the rDNA genes are discussed, probably related with the X chromosome biology.

R Coronae Borealis (RCB) and dustless Hydrogen-deficient Carbon (dLHdC) stars are believed to be remnants of low mass white dwarf mergers. These supergiant stars have peculiar hydrogen-deficient carbon-rich chemistries and stark overabundances of $^{18}$O. RCB stars undergo dust formation episodes resulting in large-amplitude photometric variations that are not seen in dLHdC stars. Recently, the sample of known dLHdC stars in the Milky Way has more than quintupled with the discovery of 27 new dLHdC stars. We present medium resolution (R$\approx3000$) near-infrared spectra of 20 newly discovered dLHdC stars. We confirm that unlike RCB stars, dLHdC stars do not show strong blueshifted ($>200$ km s$^{-1}$) He I 1.0833 $μ$m absorption, suggesting the absence of strong, dust-driven winds around them. We also present medium resolution (R$\approx3000-8000$) $K$-band spectra for 47 RCB stars. We measure the $^{16}$O/$^{18}$O ratios of 7 dLHdC and 31 RCB stars that show $^{12}$C$^{16}$O and $^{12}$C$^{18}$O absorption bands, and present the largest sample of values of $^{16}$O/$^{18}$O for dLHdC and RCB stars to date. We find that six of the seven dLHdC stars have $^{16}$O/$^{18}$O $1$. We conclude that most dLHdC stars have lower $^{16}$O/$^{18}$O than most RCB stars. This confirms one of the first spectroscopic differences between RCB and dLHdC stars. Our results rule out the existing picture that RCB stars represent an evolved stage of dLHdC stars. Instead, we suggest that whether the white dwarf merger remnant is a dLHdC or RCB star depends on the mass ratios, masses and compositions of the merging white dwarfs., Submitted to A&A, 9 pages, 4 figures

24 pags., 11 figs., 2 tabs., High spectral resolution observations toward the low mass-loss rate C-rich, J-type asymptotic giant branch (AGB) star Y CVn were carried out at 7.5, 13.1, and 14.0 μm with the Echelon-cross-echelle Spectrograph mounted on the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy and the Texas Echelon-cross-echelle Spectrograph on the Infrared Telescope Facility. Around 130 HCN and H13CN lines of bands ν2, 2ν2, 2ν2 - ν2, 3ν2 - 2ν2, 3ν2 - ν2, and 4ν2 - 2ν2 were identified involving lower levels with energies up to ? 3900 K. These lines were complemented with the pure rotational lines J = 1-0 and 3-2 of the vibrational states up to 2ν2 acquired with the Institut de Radioastronomie Millimétrique 30 m telescope, and with the continuum taken with Infrared Space Observatory. We analyzed the data in detail by means of a ro-vibrational diagram and with a code written to model the absorption and emission of the circumstellar envelope of an AGB star. The continuum is mostly produced by the star with a small contribution from dust grains comprising warm to hot SiC and cold amorphous carbon. The HCN abundance distribution seems to be anisotropic close to Y CVn and in the outer layers of its envelope. The ejected gas is accelerated up to the terminal velocity (? 8 km s-1) from the photosphere to ? 3R? , but there is evidence of higher velocities (? 9-10 km s-1) beyond this region. In the vicinity of the star, the line widths are as high as ? 10 km s-1, which implies a maximum turbulent velocity of 6 km s-1 or the existence of other physical mechanisms probably related to matter ejection that involve higher gas expansion velocities than expected. HCN is rotationally and vibrationally out of local thermodynamic equilibrium throughout the whole envelope. It is surprising that a difference of about 1500 K in the rotational temperature at the photosphere is needed to explain the observations at 7.5 and 13-14 μm. Project Completion Reports (PCRs) are the main instrument through which different multilateral organizations measure the success of a project once it closes. PCRs are important for development effectiveness as they serve to understand achievements, failures, and challenges within the project cycle they can feed back into the design and execution of new projects. The aim of this paper is to introduce text analysis tools for the exploration of PCR documents. We describe and apply different text analysis tools to explore the content of a sample of PCRs. We seek to illustrate a way in which PCRs can be summarized and analyzed using innovative tools applied to a unique dataset. We believe that the methods presented in this investigation have numerous potential applications to different types of text documents routinely prepared within the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).

The triatomine Rhodnius prolixus is the main vector of Chagas disease in countries such as Colombia and Venezuela, and the first kissing bug whose genome has been sequenced and assembled. In the repetitive genome fraction (repeatome) of this species, the transposable elements represented 19% of R. prolixus genome, being mostly DNA transposon (Class II elements). However, scarce information has been published regarding another important repeated DNA fraction, the satellite DNA (satDNA), or satellitome. Here, we offer, for the first time, extended data about satellite DNA families in the R. prolixus genome using bioinformatics pipeline based on low-coverage sequencing data. The satellitome of R. prolixus represents 8% of the total genome and it is composed by 39 satDNA families, including four satDNA families that are shared with Triatoma infestans, as well as telomeric (TTAGG)n and (GATA)n repeats, also present in the T. infestans genome. Only three of them exceed 1% of the genome. Chromosomal hybridization with these satDNA probes showed dispersed signals over the euchromatin of all chromosomes, both in autosomes and sex chromosomes. Moreover, clustering analysis revealed that most abundant satDNA families configured several superclusters, indicating that R. prolixus satellitome is complex and that the four most abundant satDNA families are composed by different subfamilies. Additionally, transcription of satDNA families was analyzed in different tissues, showing that 33 out of 39 satDNA families are transcribed in four different patterns of expression across samples.

Meloidae are commonly known as blister beetles, so called for the secretion of cantharidin, a toxic substance that causes irritation and blistering. There has been a recent increase in the interest of the cantharidin anticancer potential of this insect group. Cytogenetic and molecular data in this group are scarce. In this study, we performed a karyotype analysis of Hycleus scutellatus, an endemic species of the Iberian Peninsula. We determined its chromosome number, 2n = 20, as well as the presence of the X and Y sex chromosomes. In addition to a karyotype analysis, we carried out DAPI staining. By fluorescence in situ hybridization we mapped the rDNA clusters on 12 different chromosomes. Compared to others, this species shows an unusually high number of chromosomes carrying rDNA. This is one of the highest numbers of rDNA sites found in the Polyphaga suborder (Coleoptera). Additionally, we isolated a satellite DNA family (Hyscu-H), which was located within the pericentromeric regions of all chromosomes, including the sex chromosomes. The results suggest that Hyscu-H is likely to be one of the most abundant satellite DNA repeats in H. scutellatus.

During the past decades, land regularization and administration programs have become part of the development tool box to improve the welfare of rural farmers. However, these programs cannot produce the intended economic benefits if people choose not to enroll in them. In this context, this paper investigates how household, plot, and community characteristics, as sources of informal property rights, explain the low take-up (less than 15%) of land regularization under the National Rural Land Information and Management System Program (Sigtierras Program) in Ecuador. Using newly collected survey data combined with census tract-level data and administrative project data, we assess how different household-, plot-, and community-level characteristics affect the likelihood of take-up of legal support to regularize tenancy offered by Sigtierras. Our results suggest that some household-specific and community-level characteristics that enhance a household’s ownership claim are important determinants of take-up. Our empirical results provide insights to inform targeting strategies to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of future land regularization efforts in Ecuador.

The discovery of sex chromosome systems in non-model organisms has elicited growing recognition that sex chromosomes evolved via diverse paths that are not fully elucidated. Lineages with labile sex determination, such as turtles, hold critical cues, yet data are skewed toward hide-neck turtles (suborder Cryptodira) and scant for side-neck turtles (suborder Pleurodira). Here, we used classic and molecular cytogenetics to investigate Emydura subglobosa (ESU), an unstudied side-neck turtle with genotypic sex determination from the family Chelidae, where extensive morphological divergence exists among XX/XY systems. Our data represent the first cytogenetic description for ESU. Similarities were found between ESU and E. macquarii (EMA), such as identical chromosome number (2n = 50), a single and dimorphic nucleolus organizer region (NOR) localized in a microchromosome pair (ESU14) of both sexes (detected via FISH of 18S rDNA). Only the larger NOR is active (detected by silver staining). As in EMA, comparative genome hybridization revealed putative macro XX/XY chromosomes in ESU (the 4th largest pair). Our comparative analyses and revaluation of previous data strongly support the hypothesis that Emydura's XX/XY system evolved via fusion of an ancestral micro-Y (retained by Chelodina longicollis) onto a macro-autosome. This evolutionary trajectory differs from the purported independent evolution of XX/XY from separate ancestral autosomes in Chelodina and Emydura that was previously reported. Our data permit dating this Y-autosome fusion to at least the split of Emydura around 45 Mya and add critical information about the evolution of the remarkable diversity of sex-determining mechanisms in turtles, reptiles, and vertebrates.

Sex-determining mechanisms (SDMs) set an individual's sexual fate by its genotype (genotypic sex determination, GSD) or environmental factors like temperature (temperature- dependent sex determination, TSD), as in turtles where the GSD “trigger” remains unknown. SDMs co-evolve with turtle chromosome number, perhaps because fusions/fissions alter the relative position/regulation of sexual development genes. Here, we map 10 such genes via FISH onto metaphase chromosomes in 6 TSD and 6 GSD turtles for the first time. Results uncovered intrachromosomal rearrangements involving 3 genes across SDMs (Dax1, Fhl2, and Fgf9) and a chromosomal fusion linking 2 genes (Sf1 and Rspo1) in 1 chromosome in a TSD turtle (Pelomedusa subrufa) that locate to 2 chromosomes in all others. Notably, Sf1 and its repressor Foxl2 map to Apalone spinifera's ZW chromosomes but to a macro- (Foxl2) and a microautosome (Sf1) in other turtles potentially inducing SDM evolution. However, our phylogenetically informed analysis refutes Foxl2 (but not Sf1) as Apalone's master sex-determining gene. The absence of common TSD-specific or GSD-specific rearrangements underscores the independent evolutionary trajectories of turtle SDMs. Further comparative analyses using more genes from the sexual development network are warranted to inform genome evolution and its contribution to enigmatic turnovers of vertebrate sex determination.

Simple Summary The family Meloidae contains approximately 3000 species, commonly known as blister beetles for their ability to secrete a substance called cantharidin, which causes irritation and blistering in contact with animal or human skin. In recent years there have been numerous studies focused on the anticancer action of cantharidin and its derivatives. Despite the recent interest in blister beetles, cytogenetic and molecular studies in this group are scarce and most of them use only classical chromosome staining techniques. The main aim of our study was to provide new information in Meloidae. In this study, cytogenetic and molecular analyses were applied for the first time in the family Meloidae. We applied fluorescence staining with DAPI and the position of ribosomal DNA in Hycleus scutellatus was mapped by FISH. Hycleus is one of the most species-rich genera of Meloidae but no cytogenetic data have yet been published for this particular genus. Additionally, we isolated a satellite DNA family located within the pericentromeric regions of all chromosomes. The results obtained in this study may be a suitable starting point to initiate more extensive cytogenetic analyses in this important species-rich genus, and in the family Meloidae in general. RESUMEN Objetivo Determinar el comportamiento temporal y espacial de la leptospirosis en México durante el periodo 2013-2019. Materiales y Métodos Se utilizó la información depositada en los boletines epidemiológicos del Sistema Nacional de Vigilancia Epidemiológica de México. Para determinar el comportamiento espacial se construyeron canales endémicos y análisis de series de tiempo. Para determinar el comportamiento espacial, se utilizó el modelo estadístico espacial Scan. Resultados Se determinó que los casos de leptospirosis en México se presentan todo el año; sin embargo, los picos endémicos se observaron en los meses de agosto, septiembre y octubre. Con respecto al comportamiento espacial, no se determinó ninguna agrupación estadísticamente; no obstante, los estados con la mayor prevalencia fueron: Sinaloa, con 146.7 casos por cada millón de habitantes, y Tabasco, con 142 casos por cada millón de habitantes. Discusión La leptospirosis es una enfermedad influenciada por los hábitos y las costumbres de la población, al igual que por variables climatológicas que favorecen el contacto con el agente etiológico. Esto coincide con lo reportado por otros estudios que han determinado que la incidencia de leptospirosis aumenta durante la época de lluvia y que esta enfermedad se relaciona con actividades de recreación en zonas tropicales. Conclusiones La leptospirosis es una enfermedad zoonótica emergente de gran importancia en México, que se presenta con mayor frecuencia en época de lluvias. Los estados de Sinaloa y Tabasco son los más afectados. ABSTRACT Objetive To determine the temporal and spatial behavior of leptospirosis in Mexico during the period 2013-2019. Materials and Methods It was used the information deposited in the epidemiological bulletins of National System of Epidemiological Surveillance of Mexico. To determine spatial behavior, endemic channels and time series analyzes were constructed. The spatial statistical model Scan was used to determine the spatial behavior. Results It was determined that leptospirosis cases in Mexico occur throughout the year, however endemic peaks were observed during the months of August, September and October. Regarding to spatial behavior, it was not statistically determined any aggrupation, nevertheless the States with the highest prevalence were Sinaloa with 146.7 cases per million of habitants and Tabasco with 142 cases per million of habitants. Discussion Leptospirosis is a disease which is affected by habits and customs of the populations, as well as by climatological events, favoring the contact with the etiological agent, which coincides with that reported in other studies, in which it was determined that leptospirosis incidence increases during the rainy season, likewise, it was reported that this disease is related to recreational activities in tropical areas. Conclusions To date leptospirosis is an important emerging zoonotic disease in Mexico, the disease occurs more frequently during rainy season, being Sinaloa and Tabasco the most affected States by this disease.

The Type IIn supernova (SN) 2005ip is one of the most well-studied and long-lasting examples of a SN interacting with its circumstellar environment. The optical light curve plateaued at a nearly constant level for more than five years, suggesting ongoing shock interaction with an extended and clumpy circumstellar medium (CSM). Here we present continued observations of the SN from $\sim 1000-5000$ days post-explosion at all wavelengths, including X-ray, ultraviolet, near-infrared, and mid-infrared. The UV spectra probe the pre-explosion mass loss and show evidence for CNO processing. From the bolometric light curve, we find that the total radiated energy is in excess of $10^{50}$ erg, the progenitor star's pre-explosion mass-loss rate was $\gtrsim 1 \times 10^{-2}\,{\rm M_{\odot}~ yr}^{-1}$, and the total mass lost shortly before explosion was $\gtrsim 1\,{\rm M_\odot}$, though the mass lost could have been considerably larger depending on the efficiency for the conversion of kinetic energy to radiation. The ultraviolet through near-infrared spectrum is characterised by two high density components, one with narrow high-ionisation lines, and one with broader low-ionisation H I, He I, [O I], Mg II, and Fe II lines. The rich Fe II spectrum is strongly affected by Ly$\alpha$ fluorescence, consistent with spectral modeling. Both the Balmer and He I lines indicate a decreasing CSM density during the late interaction period. We find similarities to SN 1988Z, which shows a comparable change in spectrum at around the same time during its very slow decline. Recent sequencing and software enhancements have advanced our understanding of the evolution of genomic structure and function, especially addressing novel evolutionary biology questions. Yet fragmentary turtle genome assemblies remain a challenge to fully decipher the genetic architecture of adaptive evolution. Here, we use optical mapping to improve the contiguity of the painted turtle (Chrysemys picta) genome assembly and use de novo fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) of bacterial artificial chromosome (BAC) clones, BAC-FISH, to physically map the genomes of the painted and slider turtles (Trachemys scripta elegans). Optical mapping increased C. picta&rsquo, s N50 by ~242% compared to the previous assembly. Physical mapping permitted anchoring ~45% of the genome assembly, spanning 5544 genes (including 20 genes related to the sex determination network of turtles and vertebrates). BAC-FISH data revealed assembly errors in C. picta and T. s. elegans assemblies, highlighting the importance of molecular cytogenetic data to complement bioinformatic approaches. We also compared C. picta&rsquo, s anchored scaffolds to the genomes of other chelonians, chicken, lizards, and snake. Results revealed a mostly one-to-one correspondence between chromosomes of painted and slider turtles, and high homology among large syntenic blocks shared with other turtles and sauropsids. Yet, numerous chromosomal rearrangements were also evident across chelonians, between turtles and squamates, and between avian and non-avian reptiles.

We present an analysis of the evolution of circumstellar dust and molecules in the environment of the very late thermal pulse object V4334 Sgr (Sakurai's Object) over a $\sim20$-year period, drawing on ground-, airborne- and space-based infrared photometry and spectroscopy. The dust emission, which started in 1997, resembles a blackbody that cooled from $\sim1200$K in 1998 August to $\sim180$K in 2016 July. The dust mass, assuming amorphous carbon, was $\sim5\times10^{-10}$M$_\odot$ in 1998 August, and we estimate that the total dust mass was $\sim2\times10^{-5}$M$_\odot$ by $\sim2016$. The appearance of a near infrared excess in 2008 suggests a new episode of (or renewed) mass loss began then. We infer lower limits on the bolometric luminosity of the embedded star from that of the dust shell, which rose to $\sim16000$L$_\odot$ before declining to $\sim3000$L$_\odot$. There is evidence for weak 6-7$\mu$m absorption, which we attribute to hydrogenated amorphous carbon formed in material ejected by Sakurai's Object during a mass ejection phase that preceded the 1997 event. We detect small hydrocarbon and other molecules in the spectra, and trace the column densities in hydrogen cyanide (HCN) and acetylene (C$_2$H$_2$). We use the former to determine the $^{12}$C/$^{13}$C ratio to be $6.4\pm0.7$, 14 times smaller than the Solar System value.

The luminous Type IIn SN 2010jl shows strong signs of interaction between the SN ejecta and dense circumstellar material. Dust may be present in the unshocked ejecta, the cool, dense shell between the shocks in the interaction region, or in the circumstellar medium. We present and model new optical and infrared photometry and spectroscopy of SN 2010jl from 82 to 1367 days since explosion. We evaluate the photometric and spectroscopic evolution using the radiative transfer codes MOCASSIN and DAMOCLES, respectively. We propose an interaction scenario and investigate the resulting dust formation scenarios and dust masses. We find that SN 2010jl has been continuously forming dust based on the evolution of its infrared emission and optical spectra. There is evidence for pre-existing dust in the circumstellar medium as well as new dust formation in the cool, dense shell and/or ejecta. We estimate that 0.005--0.01M$_{\odot}$ of predominantly carbon dust grains has formed in SN 2010jl by ~1400d post-outburst., Comment: Accepted by ApJ. Author accepted manuscript. ERRATUM.

Hippodamia variegata is one of the most commercialized ladybirds used for the biological control of aphid pest species in many economically important crops. This species is the first Coccinellidae whose satellitome has been studied by applying new sequencing technologies and bioinformatics tools. We found that 47% of the H. variegata genome is composed of repeated sequences. We identified 30 satellite DNA (satDNA) families with a median intragenomic divergence of 5.75% and A+T content between 45.6% and 74.7%. This species shows satDNA families with highly variable sizes although the most common size is 100&ndash, 200 bp. However, we highlight the existence of a satDNA family with a repeat unit of 2 kb, the largest repeat unit described in Coleoptera. PCR amplifications for fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) probe generation were performed for the four most abundant satDNA families. FISH with the most abundant satDNA family as a probe shows its pericentromeric location on all chromosomes. This location is coincident with the heterochromatin revealed by C-banding and DAPI staining, also analyzed in this work. Hybridization signals for other satDNA families were located only on certain bivalents and the X chromosome. These satDNAs could be very useful as chromosomal markers due to their reduced location.

Resumen Introduccion En la actualidad la curacion del tumor testicular es factible en mas del 95% de los pacientes y en el 80% de los que tienen metastasis. Hasta hoy no existe ningun estudio o series de casos que describan las alteraciones oculares del segmento posterior asociadas a cancer testicular. Objetivo Evaluar a pacientes con diagnostico de cancer testicular para determinar la presencia de alteraciones en el segmento posterior y su relacion con el estadio. Material y metodo Estudio observacional, transversal y descriptivo de 21 pacientes masculinos (42 ojos) con diagnostico de cancer testicular. Se registro edad, tipo histologico, tiempo de evolucion, estadio, tratamiento y comorbilidades, asi como medicion de la agudeza visual (LogMAR), biomicroscopia del segmento anterior, registro fotografico de polo posterior y retina periferica. Resultados La edad promedio fue de 29 anos (18-43 anos), el 100% de los pacientes fueron tratados quirurgicamente, el tipo histologico mas frecuente fue el seminoma clasico (42,8%) seguido por el tumor germinal mixto (38%) el estadio ii se presento en el 42,8% al momento de la evaluacion, el 23,8% presentaron metastasis a distancia. Las alteraciones del segmento posterior fueron: tortuosidad vascular (14,2%), retinopatia asociada a cancer (9,5%), metastasis a coroides (9,5%), cambios pigmentarios del epitelio pigmentario de la retina (9,5%) y metastasis a retina (4,7%). Conclusiones Es posible encontrar cambios a nivel de epitelio pigmentario de la retina, tortuosidad vascular, retinopatia asociada al cancer y metastasis a coroides y/o retina.

Introduction The curing of a testicular tumor is currently feasible in more than 95% of patients, and in 80% of those with metastases. Until now, there has been no study or series of cases that describe the ocular changes of the posterior segment associated with testicular cancer. Objective To evaluate patients with a diagnosis of testicular cancer in order to determine the presence of changes in the posterior segment and the relationship to the stage. Material and method An observational, cross-sectional, and descriptive study was conducted on 21 male patients (42 eyes) with a diagnosis of testicular cancer. Age, histological type, time of evolution, stage, treatment, and comorbidities were recorded, as well as visual acuity measurement (LogMAR), biomicroscopy of the anterior segment, and photographic records of the posterior pole and peripheral retina. Results The mean age was 29 years (18–43 years). All (100%) of the patients were treated surgically. The most frequent histological type was classic seminoma (42.8%), followed by the mixed germinal tumor (38.0%). At the time of evaluation, 42.8% of patients had a stage II, and 23.8% had distant metastasis. The changes in the posterior segment were: vascular tortuosity (14.2%), retinopathy associated with cancer (9.5%), choroidal metastasis (9.5%), pigmentary changes of the retinal pigment epithelium (9.5%), and retinal metastasis (4.7%). Conclusions It is possible to find changes at the level of retinal pigment epithelium, as well as vascular tortuosity, retinopathy associated with cancer, and choroidal and/or retina metastases.

We present a simple and efficient experimental approach to synchronized dual-wavelength pulsed operation in an all-fiber laser. Four different dual-wavelength emissions of synchronized picosecond pulses are generated through simple adjustments of a wave retarder. Autocorrelation traces exhibit modulation profiles corresponding to dual-wavelength emissions with wavelength separations ranging over one order of magnitude, from 0.96 to 9 nm. In all cases, it is observed stable dual-wavelength operation and perfect synchronization between both pulsed components, without requiring of intra-cavity dispersion management. For the first time, to the best of our knowledge, synchronous tunable dual-wavelength pulse emission in a single-cavity Er/Yb double clad ring fiber laser is experimentally demonstrated.

Political brokers mobilize voters all over the world, yet little is known about what motivates them to do so. This article theorizes about two drivers of brokers' efforts: (1) incentives—monetary rewards or sanctions—and monitoring and (2) partisan attachment. We examine our theory using data on the Mexican National Educational Workers Union (SNTE), Latin America's largest union and a well-known political machine. Consistent with the role of teachers as brokers, we find that the vote share of parties supported by the SNTE machine is higher in polling stations located in schools. This effect is absent when teachers are asked to mobilize voters in support of a party for which they have no partisan attachment, and it is uncorrelated with the union's monitoring capacity. This suggests that partisan attachment, rather than incentives and monitoring, explains the SNTE's effectiveness as a political machine.
