Hemophilia is a hemorrhagic disorder with a sex-linked inherited pattern, characterized by an inability to amplify coagulation due to a deficiency in coagulation factor VIII (hemophilia A or classic) or factor IX (hemophilia B). Sequencing of the genes involved in hemophilia has provided a description and record of the main mutations, as well as a correlation with the various degrees of severity. Hemorrhagic manifestations are related to levels of circulating factor, mainly affecting the musculoskeletal system and specifically the large joints (knees, ankles, and elbows). This document is a review and consensus of the main genetic aspects of hemophilia, from the inheritance pattern to the concept of women carriers, physiopathology and classification of the disorder, the basic and confirmation studies when hemophilia is suspected, the various treatment regimens based on infusion of the deficient coagulation factor as well as innovative factor-free therapies and recommendations for the management of complications associated with treatment (development of inhibitors and/or transfusion-transmitted infections), or secondary to articular hemorrhagic events (hemophilic arthropathy). Finally, relevant reviews of clinical and treatment aspects of hemorrhagic pathology characterized by acquired deficiency of FVIII secondary to neutralized antibodies named acquired hemophilia.La hemofilia es un trastorno hemorrágico con patrón de herencia ligado al sexo, caracterizado por una incapacidad en la amplificación de la coagulación ocasionada por la deficiencia del factor VIII (hemofilia A o clásica) o del factor IX (hemofilia B). La secuenciación de los genes involucrados en la hemofilia ha permitido la descripción y registro de las principales mutaciones, así como la correlación con los diversos grados de severidad. Las manifestaciones hemorrágicas se relacionan con los niveles de factor deficiente circulante, afectando principalmente al sistema musculoesquelético y en particular a las grandes articulaciones (rodillas, tobillos y codos). El presente documento hace una revisión y consenso de los principales aspectos genéticos de la hemofilia, desde el patrón de herencia y el concepto de mujeres portadoras, la fisiopatología y clasificación de la enfermedad, los estudios básicos y de confirmación ante la sospecha de hemofilia, y de los diversos esquemas de tratamiento basados en la infusión del factor de coagulación deficiente hasta las terapias innovadoras libres de factor, así como de las recomendaciones para el manejo de las complicaciones asociadas al tratamiento (desarrollo de inhibidores y/o infecciones transmitidas por transfusión) o secundarias a los eventos hemorrágicos a nivel articular (artropatía hemofílica). La parte final del documento revisa los aspectos clínicos y de tratamiento relevantes de una patología hemorragica caracterizada por la deficiencia adquirida del FVIII mediada por anticuerpos neutralizantes denominada hemofilia adquirida.

Asparaginase-associated pancreatitis frequently occurs in children with cancer. It is unknown if other factors can influence the development of pancreatitis. A total of 33 pediatric patients with a confirmed diagnosis of acute lymphoblastic leukemia were included in this study. Before acute lymphoblastic leukemia drug treatment, the metabolic parameters (glucose, insulin, homeostasis model assessment insulin resistance, total cholesterol, triglycerides) and body mass index percentile were compared. Children who had acute pancreatitis had higher levels of insulin, homeostasis model assessment insulin resistance, and total cholesterol, compared with children who did not develop acute pancreatitis. These metabolic alterations could play a role in the development of pancreatitis.

Resumen El síndrome de McKittrick-Wheelock (SMW) es una entidad rara caracterizada por un cuadro de diarrea secretora que puede llegar a ser grave y conducir a trastornos hidroelectrolíticos y disfunción renal, secundario a la presencia de un adenoma velloso colorrectal hipersecretor. El tratamiento definitivo es la resección quirúrgica del adenoma responsable, pudiendo administrarse inhibidores de la prostaglandina E2 como terapia puente.

Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) comprises a heterogeneous group of hematopoietic cell neoplasms of myeloid lineage that arise from the clonal expansion of their precursors in the bone marrow, interfering with cell differentiation, leading to a syndrome of bone marrow failure. AML is a consequence of genetic and epigenetic changes (point mutations, gene rearrangements, deletions, amplifications, and arrangements in epigenetic changes that influence gene expression) in hematopoietic precursor cells, which create a clone of abnormal cells that are capable of proliferating but cannot differentiate into mature hematopoietic cells or undergo programmed cell death. The diagnosis requires more than 20% myeloid blasts in the bone marrow and certain cytogenic abnormalities. Treatment will depend on age, comorbidities, and cytogenetic risk among the most frequent.La leucemia mieloide aguda (LMA) comprende un grupo heterogéneo de neoplasias de células hematopoyéticas de linaje mieloide que surgen de la expansión clonal de sus precursores en la médula ósea, interfiriendo con la diferenciación celular, lo que conlleva a un síndrome de falla medular. La LMA es una consecuencia de cambios genéticos y epigenéticos (mutaciones puntuales, rearreglos de genes, deleciones, amplificaciones y arreglos en cambios epigenéticos que influyen en la expression del gen) en las células hematopoyéticas precursoras, la cual crea una clona de células anormales que son capaces de proliferar, pero no se pueden diferenciar en células hematopoyéticas maduras ni sufrir una muerte celular programada. El diagnostic requiere más del 20% de blastos mieloides en médula ósea y ciertas anormalidades citogénicas. El tratamiento dependerá de la edad, comorbilidades, riesgo citogenético entre las más frecuentes.

Lithium coatings in the Lithium Tokamak eXperiment (LTX) led to flat temperature profiles. The flat temperature profiles were observed along with a hot, low density edge, implying a broad, collisionless scrape-off layer (SOL). Additionally, in vacuo X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements established that lithium coatings evaporatively deposited onto high-Z plasma facing components (PFCs) became oxidized while retaining the ability to achieve good plasma performance long after lithium was applied to the PFCs. Longstanding theory predicted flat temperature profiles with low recycling walls, which was presumed to be due to hydrogen binding with elemental lithium to form lithium hydride. The presence of oxidized lithium, however, raised questions regarding the exact mechanism of hydrogen retention in LTX. To investigate these questions, the upgraded facility LTX- $\beta $ includes a new sample exposure probe (SEP) for more detailed in vacuo analysis of PFC samples. The SEP is equipped with a vacuum suitcase capable of transporting samples representative of the LTX- $\beta $ outer midplane PFCs to a stand-alone XPS system while maintaining pressures lower than the LTX- $\beta $ base vacuum to limit the contamination between sample exposure and analysis. The low-energy resolution XPS system used in past experiments could only enable the determination of elemental percentages on the PFC sample surfaces. Because the new XPS system has higher energy resolution, it is more direct to assign chemical compounds to the measured binding energies. This capability has been confirmed by comparing XPS data from PFC test samples with measurements using a commercial high-resolution XPS system. Quartz crystal microbalances (QCMs) were used to quantify the thickness of the deposited lithium on the LTX- $\beta $ PFCs. This article describes the application of the SEP to characterize the PFC surfaces using XPS and their relationship to plasma conditions.

Uniqueness of solutions to the SPH integral formulation of the hydrostatic problem, and the convergence of such solution to the exact linear pressure field, are theoretically demonstrated in this paper using Fourier analytical techniques. This problem involves the truncation of the kernel when the Dirichlet boundary condition (BC) on the pressure is imposed at the free surface. Certain hypotheses are assumed, the most important being that the variations of the pressure field occur in length scales of the order of the smoothing length, h. The theoretical analysis is complemented with numerical tests. In addition to the BC at the free surface, the numerical solution requires truncating the infinite subdomain below it, imposing a Neumann BC for the pressure. The consistency and convergence of the numerical solution of the truncated equation with these BCs are sought herein with a global approach, as opposed to previous studies which exclusively assessed it based on the class of the flow extensions. In these numerical tests, and consistently with the theoretical results, the convergence to the exact solution is shown numerically for discretizations with an inter-particle distance to h ratio of order one. However, when this ratio goes to zero as h also goes to zero, it is shown that length scales shorter than h appear in the solution, and that convergence is lost. The conclusions are important for SPH practitioners as setting that ratio to be of order one is a standard practice to lower the computational time.

There is early evidence about Valproic acid (VPA) antiviral effect. Our aim was to investigate the incidence and severity of SARS-CoV-2 infection in VPA users as compared with the general population.A case-control study nested within a cohort, carried out between March 1 and December 17, 2020. Retrospectively, we identified confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection patients exposed to VPA in our health department (defined as case). We ascertained VPA regimen (all the time (AT)(292 days) or at least 20% of the study period (notAT)(≥58 days) and if VPA levels were in therapeutic range (ATR) (50-100 mcg/mL) in the last 24 months. We calculated the cumulative incidence of SARS-CoV-2 infection and hospital admission in the cases, comparing it with the general unexposed VPA population (controls).During the study period, 6183 PCR+ were detected among 281035 inhabitants, of these, 746 were hospitalized. 691 patients were on VPA notAT and 628 (90.1%) AT. The indication for VPA use was epilepsy in 54.9%. The incidence of PCR+ was 1.736 % (OR 0.785 (95%CI 0.443-1.390) and 1.910 % (OR 0.865 (95%CI 0.488-1.533), on VPA notAT and VPA AT patients, respectively vs. 2.201% in people without VPA regimen. Those patients with VPA ATR had a lower risk of PCR + (OR 0.233 (95%CI 0.057-0.951) notAT; OR 0.218 (95%CI 0.053-0.890) AT). Hospital admission incidence was lower in patient on VPA (OR was 0.543 (95% CI 0.076 to 3.871).Patients with VPA within the therapeutic range had a reduction of SARS-Cov-2 infection incidence greater than 75%. There is a downward trend in the risk of COVID-19 admission by SARS-CoV-2 in patients on VPA therapy. These findings warrant further investigation.

Six warrior stelae from central Iberia (Toledo, Spain) were studied using different geological techniques to discriminate their potential source materials and evaluate the displacement suffered from the quarry sites to their final location. The similar petrographic and geochemical features of the stelae, when compared with other lithological equivalents cropping out in the surrounding area, suggest that most raw materials were quarried less than 10 km from the finds. These materials mainly belong to a set of metasedimentary rocks from the Schist–Graywacke Complex and other Ordovician brownish sandstones, mostly found in the vicinity of the stelae sites. In contrast, the Talavera de la Reina stele, previously used as a statue‐menhir, was engraved on a leucogranite, geochemically similar to some plutonic units in the Navamorcuende area, in the southernmost region of the Spanish Central System batholith. The fact that all stelae and the proposed geological sources were located close to ancient tracks suggests that the raw materials were quarried in connection with these natural routes. The stelae may, therefore, have been landmarks or reference points that signaled transit passages used for trade or grazing, in the framework of continuous territorial expansion during the Late Bronze Age and Early Iron Age.

The development of a methodology for the determination of Se(IV) concentration via cathodic stripping voltammetry is described in this work. The methodology is based on the formation of copper selenide (Cu2Se), whose reduction signal at −0.60 V has been used as an analytical response to quantify the Se(IV) concentration in solution. The novelty of our methodology is the study of this system in the presence of a ligand such as ammonium diethyl dithiophosphate (ADTTP), which forms complexes with Cu(II) and Se(IV). The results showed that the presence of ADTTP plays an important role, increasing the sensitivity of the determination by almost a factor of two compared with the methodology in the absence of the ligand. The optimized conditions were pH 1.6 (phosphoric acid, 2.0 × 10−2 mol L−1), CCu(II) = 1.5 mg L−1, CADTTP = 2.0 μmol L−1, Eacc = −0.40 V and tacc = 45 s. The detection and the quantification limits obtained were 0.065 and 0.21 μg L−1, respectively, and linearity was maintained up to 4.0 μg L−1 of Se(IV). The sensitivity was 10.26 nA L μg−1. On the other hand, the relative standard deviation for 15 replicate measurements at 1.0 μg L−1 of Se(IV) was 1.6%. The usefulness of the method was evaluated by determining Se(IV) in two certified reference materials (TMDW and TM−28.4) with relative errors of less than 2.0%. The proposed method was successfully applied to the determination of Se(IV) in spiked tap water and in a liquid pharmaceutical formulation with satisfactory results. The developed methodology presents a low detection limit, good repeatability, selectivity and linear range. Furthermore, the sensibility of the method was achieved by applying a short accumulation time (45 s).

Resumen Presentamos el caso de una paciente de 54 años que consultó por dolor y distensión abdominal inespecíficos, siendo finalmente diagnosticada de neoplasia pancreática en estadio avanzado. A la exploración física, destacaba un nódulo umbilical de 3 meses de evolución. El nódulo umbilical "de la hermana María José" es un nódulo metastásico asociado a tumores digestivos y ginecológicos avanzados. En ocasiones, será el único signo de estas enfermedades y es preciso un alto índice de sospecha para un diagnóstico precoz con objetivo de mejorar el pronóstico de estos pacientes.

For pelagic fish, length and weight measurements are common in aquaculture facilities to determine growth rates and rearing stocking densities. Body surface area is required to estimate stocking densities in the case of demersal fish species such as California halibut (Paralichthys californicus). Using image analysis processing technology allowed for the first time to determine body surface area (BSA) and total surface area (TSA) for reared California halibut in a range from 0.77 to 270 g. Flatfish biometric data were obtained using image analysis software with minimal handling and without causing any harm to the animals. Relationships between total length and wet weight versus total surface area (TSA) and body surface area (BSA) are reported for California halibut under farm-like conditions.

In calanoid copepods, intensive culture is preferred, but currently, densities do not exceed a few adults per milliliter. Several explanations exist, but none have allowed increasing the density of adults. This study proposes a new explanation for the problem of adult density in intensive culture, using the copepod Parvocalanus crassirostris as a model. First: eggs (2 h old) were supplied to adults kept at 20 adults mL−1 in 1 L containers with and without microalgae; constant aeration was supplied to determine egg survival to damage caused by the adults. Different samples were taken up to 175 min. Second: A high-density spawning test (5–80 adults mL−1) was performed, using shallow depth (2.5 cm) and supersaturation level of oxygen for rapid egg separation and sufficient oxygen for adults, respectively. The SEP (egg female−1 day−1) and REP (egg mL−1 day−1) were determined. Third: two systems of continuous egg harvesting, filtration and sedimentation, were evaluated under a high density of adults culture (10 adults mL−1). The adults of P. crassirostris quickly damaged the eggs, but the presence of food reduces the damage caused. Adults presented high SEP up to 10 adults mL−1; however, REP increased significantly to more than 170 eggs mL−1 day-1 using densities of 20 and 30 adults mL−1 (p

Evidence suggests an influence of sex hormones on cutaneous melanoma risk, but epidemiologic findings are conflicting. We examined the associations between use of oral contraceptives (OCs) and menopausal hormone therapy (MHT) and melanoma risk in women participating in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC). EPIC is a prospective cohort study initiated in 1992 in 10 European countries. Information on exogenous hormone use at baseline was derived from country-specific self-administered questionnaires. We used Cox proportional hazards regression models to calculate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Over 1992–2015, 1,696 melanoma cases were identified among 334,483 women, whereof 770 cases among 134,758 postmenopausal women. There was a positive, borderline-significant association between OC use and melanoma risk (HR = 1.12, 95% CI = 1.00–1.26), with no detected heterogeneity across countries (phomogeneity = 0.42). This risk increased linearly with duration of use (ptrend = 0.01). Among postmenopausal women, ever use of MHT was associated with a nonsignificant increase in melanoma risk overall (HR = 1.14, 95% CI = 0.97–1.43), which was heterogeneous across countries (phomogeneity = 0.05). Our findings do not support a strong and direct association between exogenous hormone use and melanoma risk. In order to better understand these relations, further research should be performed using prospectively collected data including detailed information on types of hormone, and on sun exposure, which may act as an important confounder or effect modifier on these relations. © 2019 UICC

One of the critical challenges that the global salmon farming industry will confront when upscaling production is accurate biomass control. Commercial salmon farming requires a significant level of certainty regarding fish count, average weight measurement, live weight distribution, and other production indicators. A reliable control system for assessing the biomass of farmed Atlantic salmon is essential for sustainable and cost-effective precision aquaculture. A study was done in four production sea-cages in a Chilean Atlantic salmon marine grow-out farm to estimate the average weight and frequency distribution utilizing the Vaki Biomassdaily® diode frames as an alternate technology to manual weight measurement. From post-smolt reception to fish harvest, diode frames were put in each sea-cage in a secure position for 15 months. There were no significant changes in length or average weight between manual sampling and frame estimate. The mean degree of accuracy for the average weight estimation was 98.83 % for the frames utilized in the four sea cages. The diode frames also achieved a high degree of precision in predicting the frequency distribution of fish. There were no statistically significant variations between the distribution variances of the diode frame measurements and the distribution variances of the fish received at the fish processing facility (FPF). The maximum difference between the average weight calculated by the frames and the average weight of the fish received in the processing facility was 2.4 %, with 99.66 % being the highest accuracy with only 19 g of difference. We determined that diode frames might replace manual weight assessments with greater reliability for growth monitoring and production management. To assure the optimal performance of the diode frames in terms of accuracy and precision for future commercial-scale validations in the salmon farming business, the development of a standard best practice manual is necessary.

Controlling the concentration of bioflocs is one of the main concerns in aquaculture systems with Biofloc Technology (BFT). Biofloc accumulation deteriorates the water quality and can negatively affect the production rates of the farmed river shrimp. This study describes and characterizes the settling velocity distribution of bioflocs generated with the addition of two carbon sources (molasses and chancaca) when applying the BFT for the rearing of the river shrimp Cryphiops caementarius. Resumen El 5-ASA es el tratamiento de primera linea de la colitis ulcerosa (CU) de leve-moderada, siendo la via topica la mas utilizada para las colitis distales y la combinacion con la via oral en las mas extensas. La preferencia de los pacientes es, a menudo, la via oral, lo que incide de forma crucial en la adhesion del paciente al tratamiento prescrito. El sistema multimatrix (MMX) permite la liberacion del principio activo de manera sostenida por todo el colon permitiendo su uso en monoterapia. Este analisis retrospectivo valora el grado de respuesta a la mesalazina MMX en monoterapia en funcion de la extension de la afectacion. Al inicio del tratamiento con mesalazina MMX, el 71% de los pacientes se encontraban en brote y el 29% en remision. El 31% de los casos eran proctitis, el 23% proctosigmoiditis y el 46% colitis izquierdas. La mayoria de los pacientes en brote iniciaron tratamiento de induccion con dosis de 4,8 g/dia (54,4%) y, posteriormente, continuaron con dosis de mantenimiento de 2,4 g/dia (79,2%). Tras el inicio del tratamiento, el 55% remitio a los sintomas siendo independiente de la extension de la CU.

The Versatile Array of Neutron Detectors at Low Energy (VANDLE) is a new, highly efficient plastic-scintillator array constructed for decay and transfer reaction experimental setups that require neutron detection. The versatile and modular design allows for customizable experimental setups including beta-delayed neutron spectroscopy and (d,n) transfer reactions in normal and inverse kinematics. The neutron energy and prompt-photon discrimination is determined through the time of flight technique. Fully digital data acquisition electronics and integrated triggering logic enables some VANDLE modules to achieve an intrinsic efficiency over 70% for 300-keV neutrons, measured through two different methods. A custom Geant4 simulation models aspects of the detector array and the experimental setups to determine efficiency and detector response. A low detection threshold, due to the trigger logic and digitizing data acquisition, allowed us to measure the light-yield response curve from elastically scattered carbon nuclei inside the scintillating plastic from incident neutrons with kinetic energies below 2 MeV.

This research describes for the first time, and necessary for its practical application in aquaculture, the morpho-physiological development, the allometric growth patterns, and behavioral characteristics of the early stages of larval development of the South Pacific bonito (Sarda chiliensis chiliensis). Bouyant eggs, from natural spawning, were collected from the conditioning rearing tank where wild-broodstocks were stocked for over a year in a recirculation system. The viable eggs were distributed among three aquariums to investigate the morphological and morphometric characteristics of the larval development periods that were unknown before this investigation. We described that the larval development periods extended to 519 h for the pre-juvenile stages and from 519 to 591 h for the juvenile stage. The total reabsorption of the oil globule occurred between 81 and 108 h, and this description corresponds to a differentiating characteristic of S. chiliensis chiliensis since it would now be one of the three Sarda species that presents a single oil globule in the larval period. Allometric growth patterns showed that the eyes, mouth, and head developed faster than other bodily characters. Therefore, the larvae are prioritizing for a fully-functional mouth when they enter the exogenous feeding stage. It was also observed that the visual development of the larvae was closely related to the height and length of the head and with the height and length of the eyes. Finally, and in accordance with the morphological and morphometric characteristics of the observed larvae, in this research six post-embryonic stages were described: larval stages 1 to 4, pre-juvenile and juvenile.

This investigation revealed the first biological bases of embryonic development until the hatching of South Pacific bonito Sarda chiliensis chiliensis eggs. The characteristics and stages of embryonic development were described until the hatching stage. The eggs were obtained by natural spawning from wild-caught broodstocks that were conditioned to captivity for more than 1 year in a 75 m3 marine land-based aquaculture recirculating system in Chile. The water temperature range in the broodstock RAS, during the natural spawns events, was between 18.6 °C and 19.8 °C in December 2012, between 20.4 °C and 21.2 °C in January 2013, between 21.5 °C and 22.4 °C in February 2013, and between 21.90 °C and 22.87 °C in march. Incubators’ water temperature was kept similar, through daily water exchanges, to the temperature recorded at the broodstock tank to lessen thermal stress which could affect the embryonic development. Thirty-one embryonic stages were characterized in 71.83 h until eggs hatching. Five periods of embryonic were distinguished: morula, blastula, gastrula, neurula, and metamery. Translucent telolecitic eggs hatched on the third day of incubation, and which was comparatively longer than reported for Atlantic bonito Sarda sarda and the eastern Pacific bonito Sarda chiliensis lineolata. The morphometric data with the most significant variability between the stages of embryonic development were: the length and height of the head, and the length and height of the eye. These are the first embryonic development studies conducted with eggs naturally spawned from wild-caught Sarda chiliensis chiliensis.

When copepod Acartia tonsa is isolated from tropical populations, the produced eggs exhibit low hatching after long-term storage, a critical aspect that makes their use difficult in aquaculture. In three experiments, this study spawned adults of A. tonsa cultured at different salinities and temperatures. The eggs were collected to determine hatching success of fresh and cold-stored eggs (HS-C). Experiment 1: Adults spawned under four combinations of two temperatures (18 and 28 °C) and two salinities (18 and 30 PSU) to determine the HS-C from 0 (fresh eggs) to 4 weeks of storage. Experiment 2: Adults spawned under three combinations of temperatures (18, 23, and 29 °C) and 30 PSU to determine the HS-C (from 0 to 4 weeks of storage). Experiment 3: Adults spawned under 18 °C and 30 PSU to determine the HS-C (from 0 to 8 weeks of storage). All adults were distributed in triplicate in 2 L containers at 0.5 individual mL−1 and fed with the Rhodomonas salina microalgae at 2000 μg C L−1. Metagranitic orthogneisses are abundant in the Central Iberian Zone (CIZ). This felsic magmatism has a highly peraluminous composition (A/CNK = 1.07–1.62) defining a typical S-type granite character, common in crustal thickening environments. The studied Spanish Central System (SCS) orthogneisses yield Late Cambrian to Early Ordovician U–Pb zircon ages (496 to 481 Ma), overlapping with the available literature data (mostly from 477 to 500 Ma). These orthogneisses are intrusive into metasedimentary sequences from the northern CIZ that have been recently dated at about 536 Ma. Late Ediacaran inherited zircons are common in the SCS orthogneisses (10% to 75% of the total zircon population). Most inheritance ranges from Neoproterozoic to Late Mesoproterozoic in age (0.52 to 1.25 Ga) and shows marked positive ԐHft values (>+5). This long period of Proterozoic juvenile input is only recognized in the metasedimentary rocks of the Schist–Greywacke Complex, outcropping in the southern CIZ. The proposed linkage between the southern CIZ metasediments (as sources) and the studied orthogneisses is reinforced by their similar Nd isotopic signatures (from − 2.81 to − 4.95) and the highly peraluminous character of the orthogneisses. The intrusion of this felsic magmatism within the northern CIZ, having been generated by melting of the more distal southern CIZ metasediments, together with their recycled crustal origin, suggests crustal thickening of the northern Gondwana margin during a period of flat subduction. The orthogneisses define a large linear S-type magmatic belt cropping out for over 650 km from central Spain to Galicia. The ~ 35 Ma delay between sedimentation and granite intrusion is a typical time interval for crustal thickening models. This thickening stage evolved toward a passive margin setting, allowing the deposition of the siliciclastic Ordovician series which covered the previous terranes. Minor Floian-aged tholeiitic magmatism, giving rise to scarce metabasite outcrops in the SCS, probably postdates thickening and marks this tectonic change in central Iberia., This work is included in the objectives of, and supported by, the CGL2012-32822 project of the Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad of Spain and the 910492 UCM project. Conservation regulations aimed at restricting resource use are commonly used to manage and protect natural resources but their implementation depends on the compliance of resource users. The design of effective regulations should be informed by an understanding of the factors that affect compliance, considering contextual socio-economic information. Changes have been implemented in the national legislation protecting marine turtles in the Cape Verde archipelago, where historical and recent records indicate heavy human predation pressure on nesting and foraging marine turtles. We present an assessment of levels of illegal harvesting and consumption of marine turtle products on two of the islands, Boa Vista and Santiago, and an analysis of their potential drivers. Key stakeholders were interviewed to investigate the perceived impact of the main interventions employed in Cape Verde to reduce illegal harvesting, trade and consumption of marine turtles. Despite an apparent decrease in harvesting and consumption, our results suggest there has been a shift from subsistence harvesting to trade in Boa Vista. The existence of laws to protect marine turtles was perceived as a deterrent to harvesting, and awareness campaigns and a lack of availability were perceived as reasons for the decrease in consumption in Boa Vista and Santiago, respectively. Aiming to inform ongoing discussions, we recommend a multi-targeted approach focusing on both suppliers and consumers to magnify conservation effectiveness. Regular impact evaluation focusing on harvest and consumption is needed to improve the design of regulations and inform policy decision making.

This research reveals the applied engineering basis for determining the particle size and settling velocity distributions of solids generated while rearing wild-caught premature punctuated snake-eels (Ophichthus remiger) in a prototype recirculating aquacultural system. Settled solids were sampled from the bottom of the rearing tanks, and suspended solids were sampled before filtration within the drum filter and analyzed to characterize their settling velocity and particle size properties. These particle properties are considered bioengineering parameters since they will provide biological information to improve engineering solutions for RAS solids removal processes. The average settling velocity for the settleable solids in the rearing tanks was 2.89 ± 0.02 cm s−1, and the average particle size ranged between 7.32 ± 3.41 and 19.44 ± 8.58 mm. Suspended solids within the drum filters before filtration had an average settling velocity of 0.35 ± 0.11 cm s−1 and it was found that 69.93 % of the particles size was greater than 200 μm, 15.40 % were within the range of 120 μm and 90 μm sizes, and 6.53 % were between 70 μm and 40 μm sizes. The particle physical properties, settling curves, and particle sizes curves obtained from this experience represent valuable information to be used to improve engineering design of solids handling mechanisms, especially in marine land-based systems, and in this case, applied for rearing wild-caught punctuated snake-eels. The present investigation constitutes an advance in the knowledge of applied engineering to the design of a marine aquaculture fattening operation targeted to feed up wild-caught premature punctuated snake-eels to the point of sale or trade.
